Local car seats fail safety test Andrew Board A free child restraint check for parents has uncovered a “horrific” lack of understanding, with about 95 per cent of car seats incorrectly fitted, leaving children exposed in the event of a car crash. In June the Nelson Parents Centre, along with Baby on the Move, Plunket and Nelson Police held two car seat safety checks at New World in Nelson and Stoke. The checks were held in conjunction with Parents Centre Week. Over the two days 94 car seats were checked, with only six installed correctly and the right size for their child. Baby on the Move owner Craig Smith says he was shocked at the lack of understanding. “It’s horrific, and it shows there is a lot of ignorance
about child restraints.” The reasons for the seats not complying included expired seats, children too heavy for the seats they were in, seats not strapped in tight enough and children front facing when they were too young to do so. Bev Melvern of Nelson Parents Centre says the solution is about education and giving parents the right advice before they get into bad habits. “Parents want to have them fitted correctly so it is about solving that lack of knowledge around it. We don’t want to scare parents but the results from those checks were very surprising and definitely concerning.” As a result Bev says they will hold another check before Christmas and two each year after that. “It’s not something we have done before but this has

READY FOR ART: Nelson City Council arts festival director Sophie Kelly and programme coordinator Charlie Unwin have a bit of fun ahead of the Arts Festival launch this Friday night. Photo: Andrew Board.
Arts festival set to launch exciting lineup In a year dominated by rugby, the Nelson Arts Festival is promising an action packed 17 days of entertainment, away from the footy pitch. Festival director Sophie Kelly and her team are set to launch the festival this Friday night to sponsors and stakeholders with tickets to festival events on sale from Saturday.
She says the festival will, once again, be huge. “We are really fortunate to have some really big acts coming, some great music acts and a show that has been here before and was a sell out.” The full line up will be able to be viewed online from Friday night. The festival will once again kick off
with the Masked Parade on the last day of the school term in October, with the lighting of the digital display on the Cathedral during the following carnival. The display will be alight during the Rugby World Cup and is a first for the city says Sophie. “It will look amazing, the city will look great.”

“We go fishing. It’s a chance to spend time together. We have a bach up at Durville and I just love it.”
“We do a lot of swimming. We swim at the pool and at the port. We’ve been married for 47 years and we’re best friends and do everything together.”
“We go mountain biking all around the tracks of Nelson. It’s good, we actually get to have a conversation because there’s no kids with us.”
Warmer temperatures expected for Nelson Nelsonians can expect a warmerthan-usual late winter and early spring, according to the latest seasonal climate outlook by NIWA. Temperatures in Nelson over the August-October period are equally likely to be near average or above average. Rainfall totals and soil moisture levels are likely to be in the nor-
mal range, whereas river flows are likely to be either in the near normal or below normal ranges. While weaker westerlies are expected over the country for the season as a whole, the month of August is expected to be rather different, with a continuation of the recent disturbed south-westerly flow.

highlighted a need, so we do plan on doing a lot more in the future. It’s something we need to get right.” Plunket’s Kylie Matthewson says parents need to get the right advice and the biggest problem is loose seats. Both Plunket and Baby on the Move offer a free child restraint checks for parents, even if the restraint wasn’t bought from them, says Craig. “We
are trained child restraint technicians so offer that service while we are open. Anyone can come down for a free check.” The date of the next check has not yet been confirmed. But if parents are worried they should pop down to Baby on the Move or Plunket to have their restraint checked. “We need to get the message out there and urge parents to get the check,” says Bev.

NBS keeps ambassadors on the street Street Ambassadors will be back in Nelson this summer and if more local businesses follow the lead of NBS, they could be patrolling the streets even longer.
Last week NBS general manager Ken Beams handed over a cheque for $6000 to Nelson City mayor Aldo Miccio, to help keep the ambassadors going. Currently the ambassadors are funded by the Ministry of Justice and the Canterbury Community Trust. But with a shortfall of $20,000, donations like that of NBS are essential says Aldo. The Street Ambassadors are men and women – experienced in youth work – patrolling the Nelson Central Business District during weekend nights from 10pm to 4am, over the spring and summer. They help young people in the CBD and work with police, Nelson Community Patrol, bar staff and the Maori Wardens. Ken says donating to a community organisation, like the ambassadors, is a good fit for the local building society. “The street ambassadors do a very good job and if you listen to police and everyone else it is getting more and more difficult so if we can help then great. As NBS general manager Ken Beams presents mayor Aldo a building society we see it as part of our Miccio a cheque for $6000 for the Street Ambassador responsibility to give back to the comprogramme. munity.”

CELEBRATING THE SPUD: Steffan and Penny Menzies enjoy baked potatoes on Spud Monday in Nelson yesterday. The day recognises the hardship early settlers faced having to eat seed potatoes when food was scarce. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Spud Monday makes a comeback There were plenty of potatoes to go around in Nelson on Spud Monday – a far cry from the tough times that inspired the day. Spud Monday recognises the hardship Nelson’s early settlers faced when empty food stocks meant they were forced to dig up seed potatoes they had only recently planted just to survive in the city’s first years. Nelson residents were so inspired by the story they dedicated a public holiday to the spud eaters on the first Monday of August right up until the start of World War II. Fishing and shooting contests were the activities of choice, nothing remotely to do with potatoes, according to Nelson Provincial Museum chief executive Peter Millward. “The day doesn’t seem

to have anything to do with potatoes.” A walk up the Dun Mountain trail was also a tradition. But since the day was inspired by a lack of food for our forefathers, Peter decided it needed to be reinvented, this time with a strong emphasis on eating, in particular a potato. He approached Michelle Hansen, owner of The Original Baked Potatoes, to host the celebratory day at her stand on the corner of Trafalgar and Hardy St yesterday. Michelle and Peter made dozens of small baked potatoes at lunchtime, and the pair are hoping the day will be celebrated every year. “Because it’s quite wintery conditions in the beginning of August it would be quite fun,” says Peter.

NEWS IN BRIEF Volunteer a winner in so many ways • Nelson City councillors will face questions from residents and business owners of Tahunanui this Thursday night. Amongst the key points to be discussed are traffic volume and heavy vehicles travelling through the suburb, safe crossing along Tahunanui Dr, future development, access and parking around the shopping area and infilling on sections. The meeting is being held this Thursday, 4 August at the Muritai Centre, Tahunanui School from 6.30pm. All are invited to attend. • The Game On festival is officially being launched at Nelson City Council tonight. The festival, featuring 30 events during the Rugby World Cup, is also a part of the REAL NZ national festival. • Drinkers in Nelson and Tasman are warned that bad behaviour could now result in a three month ban from purchasing alcohol from supermarkets and bottle stores as well as hotels and taverns throughout the region. The initiative, by the Nelson Tasman Off Licence Alcohol Accord, involves more than 50 on and off licence premises. • Nelson’s Mitre 10 Mega store won the award for Mega Store of the Year at the company’s awards dinner last week. With 98 Mitre 10 and Mitre 10 Mega stores throughout the country, the award judges picked out Nelson’s store for the work it does in servicing trade and retail customers in the city.
They say volunteering pays off, for Aleisha Hart it has big time. The St John volunteer, volunteer firefighter, rugby club manager and mum has won a national competition to attend the Rugby World Cup final in Auckland. Aleisha, the secretary and treasurer of the Waimea Old Boys rugby club, takes care of the day-to-day running of the club, as well as looking after its gym, the bar and the kitchen. She is also responsible for organising the touch rugby module in the summer, all of which she does as a volunteer. But it isn’t just off-field where Aleisha excels, she also plays fullback for the club’s woman’s team, which won the club championship on Saturday, in fact it was Aleisha who scored the winning try on fulltime to secure the win over Stoke. In her spare time she is a qualified emergency medical technician with St John and a volunteer firefighter at the Richmond fire brigade, she also has a six year old daughter, Paris, and works as a proBUSY LADY: Aleisha Hart has won tickets to the 2011 Rugby motions coordinator. Four winners, including Aleisha were selected from nominees by a panel of judges which included representatives from Coca Cola Oceania and Media Works. Winners will be aired on TV3 and will win tickets to the final, flights and accommodation. Aleisha was nominated by Kurt Patterson, who works at the club’s bar with her and who says she does an “awesome job”. “She likes to help people and has a passion for the club which has taken over her life.” Aleisha plans to take Kurt with her to the final as a thank you, “If he hadn’t nominated me I wouldn’t be going. “I love rugby and to be going to the World Cup is fantastic surprise, I can’t wait.”

Outstanding response to awards Locals have once again got behind their volunteers with 109 nominations received for the TrustPower Nelson Tasman Community Awards. Nominations for the Awards closed on Friday 15 July. The TrustPower Nelson Tasman Community Awards which recognise and reward volunteers for the outstanding contribution they make to the local community are run in conjunction with the Nelson City and Tasman District Council. TrustPower Community Relations Representative Suzi Luff says she is excited that so many generous and
hard working community groups will be celebrated through this year’s awards. “The Community Awards are all about recognising the hard work of groups who are the community’s unsung heroes. They work tirelessly and give so much for the benefit of those who live in the Nelson Tasman regions. “Through the TrustPower Community Awards we will celebrate and honour these volunteers and their hard work. A big ‘thanks’ must go to the people who nominated these wonderful groups,” says Suzi.

Fashion Island was home to a massive chain-gang of fettuccini makers last week as organisers of the Nelson Farmers Market enlisted the help of shoppers and children on school holidays to help hold the 52 metre piece of pasta. The promotion was to show people how easy and cheap it is to make your own pasta, as opposed
to packet pasta from a supermarket. Vincenzo Di Luca, of the Italian Kitchen, was making the pasta and handed it out to the children that helped hold it. He says making and eating fresh pasta is simple, fun and cheap. “With just a few eggs and some flour you have beautiful pasta, fresh and you’ve made it yourself.”

Stalwart retires after 43 years at AA Andrew Board
It was a shaky start at the AA for Ken Morris. The 22 year-old was told by his dad that he was making a big mistake giving up his job as a mechanic to move to the AA, and on the first morning of work, his boss told him to get out of the car and go searching for a piece of cellophane he threw out the window. But 43 years on, Ken says there is not one thing he would change about his career at the AA, after he retired last Wednesday. “I’ve been lucky; I’ve had a job I loved for my entire working life.” Ken was farewelled from the Nelson AA with a party last Wednesday and says he still can’t quite believe it is all over. “I’m sitting here looking at the clock thinking, ‘oh, almost 3 o’clock I better get ready for work’.” But instead Ken has time to reflect on what was often a hectic career. He started in 1958 and his job covered breakdowns, putting up road signs and vehicle inspection over a large chunk of the top of the south, including as far down as Springs Junction and across to the West Coast. Back in those days, with no cell phones and less reliable cars, the AA would go looking for breakdowns and Ken recalls spending Boxing Day each year towing people up both sides of the Whangamoa’s and letting them coast down the other side. “We were flat out; everyone would try to come over to Nelson or go to the Sounds
and would be towing great big caravans and their cars couldn’t make it up the hill. As we were towing one person up we would come across another on the side of the road and we would yell out ‘we’re coming back’.” Ken’s wife Diane was also a big part of Ken’s job. In the early days if someone had a break down after hours they would search AA in the phone book and Ken’s home phone number was listed, so he was on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “I lost count of the number of times we were off somewhere as a family and I’d get a call to go do a job. I would always go, which didn’t always please my wife.” Ken says he would have helped “hundreds upon hundreds” of local drivers over the years and it was something he always liked. “I really enjoyed my job because every day and every job was different, no two were the same. That Ken Morris has worked at AA Nelson for 43 years. Last week he hung up his keys and headed was always a big appeal to me beinto retirement. Insert: Ken at work a few years after he started. Go Makos comp kicks into action Ideas for the “Signing up the Makos” competition are already flooding in with just weeks until it offically launches. The competition, run by Tasman Makos sponsor Richmond Mall, aims to get Nelson folk showing support for their team by making a sign that says “Go Makos”, make sure you also include the words “Richmond Mall” somewhere on the sign. Then put it up somewhere between Rai Valley and Murchison and take a photo to prove it. All photos need to be sent into Nelson Weekly and the best sign up before each of the three games to
be played in Nelson will win one of three $1000 Mall vouchers. Photos must be raw (not altered) and you must include sign location details and your name, address and contact details. The best looking sign in the coolest location will win one of the three $1000 prizes. But to be in to win signs must be up by the day prior to each of the games – August 16, 21 and 25 – and emailed to us before the game starts. All photos for the “Signing up the Makos” competition need to be sent to editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz.
Josh Wilkinson, 11, of Stoke, kicks a ball through the sign he and his sister Leeah made for the Signing up the Makos competition, which kicks off in mid August.

New face for city retailers
Uniquely Nelson manager Ro Richards leaves the post today, with Cathy Madigan, right, taking over the reins tomorrow. Photo: Andrew Board. Leaving Uniquely Nelson was a tough decision for Ro Richards, who had spent the previous three years as its manager. But her departure from the city tomorrow has been made easier with her replacement. “I feel like I’m leaving my baby in good hands,” beams Ro. Her replacement of the city centre marketing and promotions group is a local girl returning home. Cathy
Madigan was born and bred in Nelson before moving offshore. She has made a name for herself in a similar role in Melbourne and says she is excited about her new job. “I’ve been left a great foundation and platform from which to build, which is exciting, but I’m really keen to spend the first few weeks getting to know retailers and the city. I’m all ears.” Cathy officially takes over the role tomorrow morning.

Quality Paint & Panel is one of those great businesses that does what it says, and it says it all in its name - they provide a quality paint and panel job to your vehicle. Alan has been in the repair and paint industry for 23 years, (13 years of which he worked for another business.) Alan and his wife, Sharron have owned Quality Paint & Panel for the last 11 years. The business has grown steadily and they now have four fully qualified repairers. The couple Alan Martin say they have built their business around customer satisfaction. “That is the most important thing to me. I’m not happy unless the customer leaves happy,” says Alan. Quality Paint & Panel is a member of the Collision Repair Association and is an approved structural repairer. If your car has been in an accident, Quality Paint & Panel will take the stress out of the insurance process by assisting in all aspects of the insurance claim process. Remember, as the vehicle owner you have the right to choose your repairer. Alan also specialises in custom airbrushing on cars and motorbikes. “We treat every vehicle repair big or small that comes here as our own, every time a customer picks up their car from Quality Paint & Panel, we want them to think to themselves, ‘that was easy’,” says Alan. Terra Firma is latin for solid ground and that’s what Chris Gillman loves to work with. Chris started his gardening business 12 years ago and says his success is due to the fact that he treats his customers gardens as if they were his own. “I don’t do a cosmetic job, it’s important to go under the ground to ensure the job is done right first time.” Chris also has a great knowledge of plants and can tell if a plant is unhealthy. He will consult with the owner Chris Gillman about what to do with it, as one unhealthy plant can bring down the look of an entire garden. Chris’ customers range from elderly, to business people who just don’t have the time to maintain their property, but want to enjoy a nice garden. “I first got into gardening for enjoyment. I find it very satisfying effecting positive changes, and I feel lucky that I can make a living doing what I love.” He says some people are surprised at the results and didn’t realise their garden could look so good, or spacious, and this change can happen quickly. “I listen to what you want and will do my best to make it happen.” Chris can also offer total property maintenance so call him today. Carl Gould has been a busy man since taking over as owner of Super Liquor Tahunanui earlier this year - in fact he has been too busy. So Carl has now employed a new manager and he went straight for the best. Trevor Pugh has been working in liquor stores around the country for the past 36 years and says he is excited about his new role at Super Liquor. Trevor knows his stuff when it comes to alcohol but says what he most enjoys about the industry is the customers, “I really enjoy this kind of work, it’s a great industry to be in, the people are friendly and getting to know your customers is an exciting part of it and a very important part of it.” Super Liquor stocks a huge range of beer, wine and spirits and can arrange all your alcohol for your next big party or event. They will even deliver to your event for free and if you don’t use it all it can be returned meaning you only pay for what you use. Carl says Super Liquor has built up a huge customer base and he puts that down to providing good stock at great prices and getting to know the people. “People in Tahuna are great; we are getting to know the regulars by name and it’s nice catching up with them.” So pop in and see Carl or Trevor, they will be sure to greet you with a friendly face and a sharp price. Jacks, Prices sweep netball double header The Premier grade played a double round this week with Jacks OPD accounting for Stoke NBS 69-50 on Thursday. The remaining two games were deferred to Saturday on account of Nelson under-17 representative commitments. After being promoted to the elite grade, Wanderers Taylors A received a baptism of fire at the hands of Richmond Wakatu 75-33. Prices Pharmacy had the better start
when they met Waimea College, with shooters Ani Waitai and Leigh Wiremu finding their rhythm early they went out to 15-10 lead at the first break. The second period was more even, with Prices having a slight 11-10 advantage. As it is frequently talked about the third quarter being the championship quarter Waimea hammered a home a 19-10 period. The green team moved up a gear after the major break as Prices looked to have lost their momentum. Waimea had an abundance of possession, with 30 attempts at goal while Prices were restricted to a miserly 14. Although Prices made a few onslaughts in the final quarter, the college team held their composure to take the game 50-44, and deny Prices a bonus point. Prices were well served by defender Kirsty Thompson – she pulled in a number of well timed intercepts, had presence through court and delivered some great long range feeds to her shooters. It was an extremely high scoring game in the Richmond Wakatu and Stoke NBS encounter. Although coming out on the wrong side of the ledger, Stoke NBS played a great team game in the 58-70 loss. Richmond won the first two quarters by a solitary goal, however they had the better third quarter 18-11. Stoke wing defence Emily Stalker catches the Stoke NBS attacking line up had oncoming pass. Steph Bothwell and Abbie Cook wore their ‘shooting boots’ with Abbie converting a number of long range shots. The young guns in the mid court Christta Burrows and Michaela Matenga were confident of letting the ball go and fed intelligently. The defensive combo of Aleisha Cederman, Jemma Taikato and Emily Stalker toiled to combat Richmond’s offense and fought to gain any scrap ball. Jacks OPD defeated Waimea College 5239, while Prices Pharmacy accounted for Wanderers Taylors 63-36.

College coach cautious ahead of semi Tyler Kearns. Bill says all three returned to training with added “enthusiasm.” Mitch Hunt, in his debut season, will don the number ten jersey again this week and has impressed his coach since shifting in to the playmaker role from his more accustomed fullback position. “We tried other combinations but he’s very gifted, he kicks off both feet, he’s got very good scanning skills, he’s got a great pass, he’s very courageous, he tackles well for a small man, he’s got all the attributes that would suggest he could go a long way.” Mitch will be marking former Nelson College prodigy Fletcher Smith, one of the real danger men in the away team’s balanced line-up. The match kicks off at 12noon at Nelson College.

saw him do it, it was wonderful, really exciting.” However, no one could have guessed that only a few months later Helen too would be celebrating her very own ‘hole in one’ on the very same green. Helen says she didn’t even realise she had done it when last week her ball disappeared from sight. Ian who had been on the course that day saw her shot and soon realised what had happened. “I went over to have a look, I felt sure it had gone in. Meanwhile I could see Helen looking around trying to find it. Sure enough when I looked in the hole there it was.” Helen says she has been told what they’ve achieved is quite unusual and that they are the first couple at Greenacre’s to both get a hole in one. Perhaps what is more amazing and unusual is that Helen has managed, within a few months of playing, what her husband and others have spent years trying to achieve.

It took Ian Kaine 17 years to hit that dream hole-in-one. Then the keen golfer watched as just months later his wife did it after only taking up the sport in February. Ian and Helen Kaine are both members of the Greenacres Club in Richmond. Ian began playing when he was twenty, but gave it up for several years before taking it up again about 17 years ago. Helen on the other hand may be regarded by many ardent players as something of a novice and new to the game, only picking up a club and taking it seriously this year. “All I heard was talk of golf and after several years of listening to conversations about the game I decided I may as well play myself, so I joined the club earlier this year and now I love it, it is a game of skill,” she says. When Ian achieved what most players’ dream of, a hole in one, Helen was as proud of his achievement as he was. “I was on the course at the time and

The race for the Glen Stephens’ memorial trophy heated up on the weekend as last year’s winners FC Tahunanui 2nd XI fell short against Richmond Thistle 1-0 in the second round of pool play on the weekend. The trophy was donated in memory of late Tahunanui player Glen Stephens and includes teams from division two, three and four. Richmond Thistle scored the only goal of the match midway in to the first half through Andy Gapes to seal Saturday’s win at the Tahunanui Playing Fields. Nelson College first XV escaped with a 13-10 victory the last time they faced Christchurch Boys’ High School but coach Bill Liddell says the result could have gone either way and will be taking no chances ahead of this weekend’s hugely anticapated Press Cup semi-final. “I’m very apprehensive about the challenge in front of us,” says Bill. “We have to approach it in the right manner otherwise we’ll come second. It will be a very, very tight game. This result could take 70 minutes to win quite frankly.” Nelson will be bouyed by the return of three of its star players who were involved in the South Island Secondary Schools team during the holidays - captain Mitchell Drummond, Steven Soper and

Nick Smith backs trails motorsport It’s not often you see a Government Minister for the Environment endorsing any form of motorsport and even more intriguing when that minister is also the Minister of ACC. The Honourable Dr Nick Smith however, has good reason to smile about the relationship with this group. Local Nelson-based NonStop Adventure NZ trials group, amongst other things, trains motorcyclists of all ages and abilities to be better off-road riders and therefore reducing the likelihood of injury. They also run the annual NZ Ihatove (Dreamland) Adventure Trial motorcycle event, a sister event to the highly successful Japanese Ihatove Trial, the largest trial of its kind in the world, having been run annually there since 1977. This professional friendly, fun ride, which attracts international riders to Nelson every February, is aiming to now promote the introduction of an electric motorcycle to the sport. NonStop has informed Nick Smith that the Japanese and New Zealand events hope to be two of the first events to have an electric machine included. Whilst electric trials motorcycles are still relatively new it’s an area that is expected to develop as time
goes on and technology improves. Trials Motorcycling, which is ridden at low speeds over challenging terrain, both natural and man-made, is already one of the most environmentally friendly motorsports due to the very low noise output; use of land that is not normally suitable for grazing or cropping; minimal fuel usage and therefore limited carbon emissions (a typical trials bike has a 2 litre fuel tank which on most occasions lasts the full event). Bikes need instant torque to climb obstacles and that is one of the characteristics of electric engines. A few of these machines have already been developed and this trend is expected to grow. Motorcycle trials is also one of the least expensive motorsports to access. For the majority of riders the biggest portion of success depends on the ability of the rider rather than the machine or the size of your wallet. NonStop Adventure trials group say they very much welcome the minister’s endorsement and support as they work hard to grow this form of motorcycle sport and the safety of motorcyclists throughout New Zealand, while promoting the enjoyment that it has to offer, rather than the fierce competitiveness of racing disciplines.
COACHES: Tennis NZ Coach educator/assessor Lynnie Nevin, left, ran a community coaches course at the Nelson Lawns club on Sunday. In the Nelson region there is a large number of community coaches working alongside professional coaches and they play a huge role at the clubs. Weightlifting is making a strong ressurgance in the Nelson region with four of the region’s top athletes all finishing inside the top two at the South Island Olympic Weightlifting Championship in Christchurch last week. Jason Hylkema, who coaches a trio of Nelson College students along with Glenn Stewart, finished first place overall in the senior under-94kg class while Jasper Irvine, 16, finished second in the under-94 junior division, Christian Jessop, 16, finished second in the under-85kg junior division and Grant Lawrence, 17, finished second in the under-58kg junior division. weighlifters are “way ahead of where anyone in Nelson has been.” Jasper and Christian both qualified for the national championship on August 20 and impressed former Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Terry Hughes who is keen to take the pair in a New Zealand Secondary Schools squad to Australia. The trio of Nelson College students will be the first on the school’s history to earn colours for weightlifting. Visit Results! Heartbreak for Stoke women as last second try rips title from grasp A try in the final minutes looked to have sealed the championship for Stoke Women, until it was cancelled out by a lasp gasp effort from Waimea Old Boys’ fullback Aleisha Hart just moments later. It was a match truly worthy of finals status the reigning champions against the minor premiers. Stoke and Waimea have had some epic battles over past seasons and this was no exception with momentum swinging both ways throughout. Waimea started strongly and seemed to have the measure of Stoke in the first half, denying them possession and territory which paid dividends in the form of a 13-0 lead at the break. Whatever coaches Willie Fletcher and Jason Hulena said to their charges in the halftime huddle seemed to have the desired effect, and Stoke swung into action immediately. The forwards started to work consistently at the breakdown and provide their backs with some much needed go-forward ball. The benefactor on this occasion was surprise package Stephy Omundsen who hit the ball at pace out wide after some quick handling through the backline to dot down in the corner. This was just the pick-me-up Stoke needed, and they didn’t relent, with halfback and captain Angela Cotton running 30 metres to score
again after a cheeky dart from the base of a ruck. The conversion was duly slotted to close the gap to a single point, which sent the Stoke supporters into a frenzy. The Stoke onslaught seemed to frustrate Waimea who started to offend at the breakdown, subsequently losing three players to the sin bin. Stoke continued to fight hard, hoping to capitalize on their opponents indiscretions, and it was none other than an inspirational Angela who again sniped around the base of her forwards to scurry away for Stoke’s third try. On occasions like this, time seems to stand still for Stoke, although it probably had the opposite affect for Waimea, and with the Stoke girls clinging to a slender 17-13 lead, the home supporters were literally counting down the final nerve-racking seconds. But Waimea weren’t giving up and were now back to a full 15 and hot on attack inside the Stoke 22. Stoke worked hard to organise their goal line defence but were eventually caught short down the blind side when Waimea’s fullback Aleisha Hart crossed right on fulltime to deny Stoke the victory. The team wishes to thank everyone for their support this year, particularly their coaches and sponsors, and also those familiar faces on the sideline every week. Bring on next season!

Tahunanui Super Liquor Stoke Reds succumbed to a fired up Motueka United side 31-5 at Greenmeadows on Saturday. Both sides played an entertaining brand of free flowing footy well reffed by John Hippolite. Players of the day were Steve Epiha for a solid stint at prop and Steve Whakatihi at first five. Stoke’s next game sees the side host Marist at Greenmeadows. Co-coach Tony Smith says, “improvements are imperative” if the side wants to entertain playoff thoughts.
