Jonty Dine When Reuben and Brooke Bensemann first saw their Nelson home, they loved it so much they didn’t even check the backyard. “We were just so stoked on the place, we just threw an offer in.” When that offer was successful, the young couple decided to explore their new property and were greeted with a steep, sloping section, enveloped by gorse as tall as Rueben. After having to crawl through the thickest of it, they eventually made it to the top and, looking down on the dense shrubbery, pondered what to do with the area. Obviously, a tennis court was not an option, so Reuben jokingly said, “what if I put a tiny bike track in?” The clay soil offered few alternatives, and Brooke agreed to one small track which soon became two, and now two years later,

For three consecutive nights, a group has wreaked havoc out the front of the Stoke eatery, smashing tables, planter boxes, and attempting to set a fire. Owner Lynley Gilchrist-Lunn says the young offenders are

causing further stress in what are already uncertain times. “You don’t know one day to the next if you’re going to make a buck or not, and then on top of that you have this to deal with. It is not helpful and doesn’t

put anyone in a better frame of mind.” The redwood tables, which sit permanently out the front of the café, cost between two and six thousand dollars and had been recently sanded and revarnished.

Car on the move Vehicle crashes into retailer Baby on the Move Sara Hollyman Marianne Hart Biggs was on her first day of summer holidays when she found out someone had driven through the front of her shop. Marianne, who owns Baby on the Move in Akersten St, had just jumped out of the sea at Kaiteriteri about 4.45pm last Wednesday, when she got a call from Nelson Alarms that the alarm in the store had been activated. She replied “oh, one of my team members has probably set it off accidentally”. As she was on the phone, a call came in from her staff member, “if you’ve set the alarm off you owe me $50,” she joked. “Mari, someone’s driven through the front of our shop.” She loaded the kids into the car and headed back to Nelson. “The driver doesn’t know what happened,” Marianne says. “It really has been just a genuine accident. “The vehicle has gone right through and bent the metal, so we are going to need a whole new storefront.” She says there has been quite a loss of stock, simply because of the shattered glass. “We are a safety business at the end of the day, we keep chil-

Marianne says her staff were amazing, rearranging the shop so that they could continue to open. “We have completely portioned off that area of the shop, but we will close an extra day to do a deep clean.”

Marianne says neighbours Trafalgar Painters were brilliant, helping them board up the store frontage and parking a truck across the store front to protect passerbys from any remaining glass and debris. “We have always wondered if someone will eventually run into the building, it’s a very, very busy area, there’s always trucks coming and going, boats, service vehicles, etc. “It was quite the surprise but it really was just an accident.”

From wasteland to playground from page 1 the backyard has been transformed into a stunning mini bike paradise. Rueben spent six months painstakingly pulling out the gorse roots before digging out the tracks and building ramps. Seating, stone paths, and vibrant new gardens surround the once barren backyard, now dubbed ‘Peppa Pigs Playground.’ “I have no idea how we ended up with that name, it just happened,” says Reuben. As a competitive mountainbiker, it has always been Reuben’s dream to have a track in his backyard. “I’d love to one day buy a rural property with a rolling hillside and build a proper track, but this is the closest thing for now.” Due to its size restrictions and high element of difficulty with numerous jumps and drops, the track is designed for big people on small bikes. This reduces the chance of seri-

ous injury, something Reuben is familiar with having badly damaged his hip, shoulder and wrist during his career. “Being so close to the ground it’s not that bad when you fall, and you just laugh it off.” The couple also recently became parents and Reuben says it won’t be long before he’s pushing his son around the tracks in a wheelbarrow. “We want people to come around and enjoy it, they think it’s hilarious,” says Brooke. While she has tried her hand on the track, Brooke says she prefers the comfort of the bench overlooking the action. Members of the public are welcome to visit Peppa Pigs Playground, with the couple hosting regular open days. There will be no shortage of bikes to use, with Reuben having accumulated 16 in his shed. “It’s just something really different and stupid,” says Rueben. The need for weed control Sara Hollyman

‘Disgusting’, ‘ugly’ and ‘eyesore’ are words that have been used to describe the out-of-control weed growth on Nelson’s roundabouts. Complaints were made to the Nelson Weekly about roadsides, roundabouts and islands in Nayland and Quarantine Rds as well as along the State Highway. Waka Kotahi manages maintenance along State Highway 6 in and out of the city, while Nelson and Tasman District Councils are responsible for their respective city streets. NCC group manager infrastructure, Alec Louverdis, says warm weather following a wet winter has made ideal conditions for weeds to grow quickly. “That means our normal maintenance schedule can, at times, struggle to keep up with growth,” he says. “Our contractor is working to get on top of this situation where it has occurred on roadsides we are responsible for in

The weeds are around one metre tall in some areas along State Highway 6. Photo: Sara Hollyman. Nelson.” He says work was scheduled to be undertaken along Nayland Rd last week. Andrew James, system manager for Waka Kotahi Top of the South, says regulatory changes brought in last year to improve worker safety in high-speed traffic environments has, in turn, brought extra costs and subsequent increased traffic disruptions when work is undertaken. Andrew says there is now a requirement for safer distances be-

tween workers and their machinery/ plant and drivers. “Local places where this has affected the perceived tidiness of these plantings are within the 70kmh zones between the Beatson and Quarantine roundabouts,” he says. He says options are being investigated to reduce the level of maintenance required in these areas. “In the meantime, we are planning a road closure in the next few weeks to enable some vegetation clearance to be undertaken.”

NEWS Nelson Tasman welcome communities together: Nelson and Tasman councils will be able to make the region an even more welcoming place for refugees and immigrant communities after officially being added to Immigration New Zealand’s Welcoming Communities programme. The initiative is for regional centres that have shown they have good infrastructure and social support for welcoming refugee and immigrant communities. The programme was launched last month. NZCT award slew of grants in January: The New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) awarded $111,983 worth of community grants to ten organisations in the Nelson Tasman region in January. These included grants to Athletic College Old Boys Cricket Club, Central Districts Cricket Association, the Louise Perkins Foundation, Nayland College, Nelson School of Music, Nelson Surf Lifesaving Club, Netball NZ, Seed NZ and Tasman Wheelers. Richmond family on an epic road trip Jo Kent

Ditching the daily grind to travel the country on a house bus is an adventure of a lifetime and the Ballagh family from Richmond have just taken the plunge. When Rebekah’s husband Hamish said he was ready for a career break, she suggested they rent out their house and

travel the South Island with their toddler Mikah and dog Jet. “I’ve always, always, always wanted to live in a bus or do some tiny living. My work is entirely online, so I said, ‘You know what, let’s buy a house bus, do it up and we’ll do a big trip!’” Rebekah says. The couple wasted no time searching on TradeMe and

soon found ‘the one’. “We stumbled across an old 1971 Ford. I loved the character of it, and what sold it for me was that it has a fireplace in it. I just knew it would be so cosy towards the end of the trip when we got into winter.” Purchase made, Hamish spent eight months renovating the bus.

The couple plan on being away until June and will try to get round the whole of the South Island. “We are kind of winging it. We will just stay in places for as long as we feel the call to stay there and leave when we feel we’ve done what we needed to do.” Follow their adventure on Instagram, @ballaghs_bus_life.

Could you drive the local train? Parking meter Jenny Nicholson Peter Lewis-Smith has gone from doctor to train driver. “I just got my certificate this week to drive the train,” he says. With just five certified drivers, the Nelson Train Society members are looking for others who would like to ‘play with serious, big, real-life toys in the form of trains’ to join them. “We are looking for drivers,” Peter says. “And for people to help with maintenance and safety protocols.” Peter grew up in Scotland, with the royal train Queen Victoria had established to travel to Balmoral passing his back yard. Hearing the train pass by and having a goods yard behind their family home was fascinating for Peter as a boy. His interest in trains was put aside for his career years. About five years ago he retired from medicine and shifted back to Nelson from Scotland. That was when his interest in trains was revived. After taking his grandchil-

volunteers driving and maintaining the steam engine at Founders Park. Over the past six months this group of retirees have worked

non-stop on maintenance and safety protocols required to regain their license. With a new license they started rides again on Boxing Day and now operate Thursday to Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm. Safety is the main consideration for the railway, and to keep the line and train in good condition is relatively heavy work. “We are a fit bunch but not young” Peter says. “We would love to have other people join us.” One member of the society is certified to teach others to drive the train. There is a process with people first learning guard duty, before moving to driver assistant and then on to learning to drive the train. Peter says feedback is very positive. “Children are our best customers,” he says. “They get enthralled.” While there are anything from three to 30 people on most rides, the train is available for weddings and other events and can hold about 100 people. damage to cost thousands

Sara Hollyman Thousands of dollars’ worth of damage has been done to parking meters in Nelson’s CBD. Eight parking meters were vandalised, having the screen smashed, in the central city between Monday evening and Wednesday morning last week. NCC group manager of infrastructure, Alec Louverdis, says the total cost of repairs is still uncertain, but it’s likely to cost around $20,000 to get all the meters working again. “Council is working with our insurer to see if the vandalism can be covered by our policy,” Alec says. Meters were damaged on Selwyn Place, Montgomery Carpark, Halifax St and Bridge St, with two damaged on both Trafalgar and New Sts. Local contractors have already begun repairing the damaged machines and should be finished by the end of this week. “Some machines are already fixed, but others had to be sent to Auckland for repair,” Alec says. Machines that aren’t working will have stickers on them to let the public know not to use them. Alec says police have CCTV footage and are investigating. “Anyone with information about how the meters were damaged should speak to the police.”

A century of stories Jonty Dine He was court-marshalled during World War 2, has met the Queen of England, and hit four holes-in-one on the golf course. Bob Bryan has packed a lot of living into his 101 years. Born in England, Bob immigrated to Westport as a oneyear-old. After leaving school he took a job at National Airways and joined the Air Force at 20. He was trained in Levin before being deployed to Canada in 1941. Bob and his friend were court marshalled after low flying a Hurricane over Dundee near the St Andrews Golf Course. This was not unusual for pilots looking to escape the stresses of war. But the joy ride quickly took a nosedive when Bob’s fellow pilot crash landed. With the destroyed plane acting as the smoking gun for their crime, Bob confessed to low flying. He was suspended from flying for ten months, was stripped of his rank and spent 56 days in a military prison. “They had had a few accidents like that, so they made an example of us.” The two moths he spent in prison were the worst of his life. “It was bloody terrible, the

conditions were shocking. Your roommates were murders, embezzlers, you name it.” After serving his sentence, Bob was posted to India where he fought in the Burma Campaign. Bob says there were a few close calls during the numerous battles, though he tried “not to take any notice of it”. He also contracted both malaria and yellow fever while in southeast Asia. After losing his rank of sergeant pilot, Bob was recommended for commission. “I thought that was not too bad after my misdemeanors.” Following the war, Bob returned home and assumed his career at National Airways and was appointed manager in Blenheim where he spent 13 years before being promoted to a position in Nelson. “I’ve been retired bloody near 50 years.” A ladies’ man, Bob eventually settled down when he met his wife Beth in Wellington. “I had a few girlfriends at the time, I guess you click with one and that’s that, she was lovely.” The couple had three children and eight grandchildren. Tragically, Beth passed away from cancer at just 42. With his youngest child only nine at the time, Bob raised his three children alone and did not remarry.

Nelson

A keen sportsman, Bob played golf for fifty years and holds a distinguished record at the Nelson Golf Club. A feat some professional golfers never accomplish, Bob has hit a staggering four hole-inones in his career. Beginning in 1965, Bob also aced holes in 1985, 1987, and 2001 as an 81-year-old. Bob credits the feat to sheer volume of time on the course. “I played a lot of golf after I retired, so the chances of getting one were up there.” Bob turned 101 on 5 January and celebrated with his family with a meal at The Boatshed. He still lives independently in his Wakefield Quay apartment, and frequently rides his scooter into town for groceries. He is still in fantastic health both physically and mentally, even driving up until 98. “I have good and bad days. I have bowel problems, if I have a good motion, it makes my day.” Bob has even met the Queen in his lifetime, though didn’t exactly swoon when her letter arrived in the mail to congratulate him on one hundred years. “That’s a load of bulls***,” he laughs. While Bob doesn’t know the secret to his longevity, he did offer some advice on how to enjoy life. “Plenty of grog.”

Maddi rides length of NZ Sara Hollyman Editor

sara@topsouthmedia.co.nz

A Nelson student, who had no previous interest in cycling, has just ridden the length of New Zealand. Maddi Harrop, 12, had no interest in cycling when she was given a Tāhunanui School assignment during the 2020 lockdown which saw her read an article about a boy who cycled from Cape Reinga to Wellington. “I just thought I kind of wanted to do something like it,” Maddi says. So, Maddi and her dad Colin, began three months of training doing rides from their Tāhunanui home to Wakefield, Brightwater, Kaiteriteri, Cable Bay and even over the Tākaka Hill. In August 2020 the pair set off on a three-week ride to Bluff - a roughly 1000km journey. The first leg took them to the Kohatu Hotel for the evening, with plans to make it to Murchison the following day. However, a head wind caused a change of plan, with the pair stopping at Owen River. “The first day was fine but the next day was hard,” Maddi says. “We kind of bailed and went to the Owen.” After completing the trip to Bluff it was back home again. Maddi and Colin began planning for the next leg of the mammoth effort – a 1200km trip from Nelson

to Cape Reinga. This time Maddi’s mum Sarah wanted to come along. “The first one I thought they were completely crazy, but then when they got back, I sort of felt like I missed out so I thought ‘I wonder if I could do it’ and they let me.” With Maddi now much fitter than the first journey, after getting into mountain biking, the trio didn’t cycle together. “They were way fitter and stronger and had their own pace, so we set off together sometimes but then I would just do my own thing,” Sarah says. “Then we stopped setting off together and I just went early. “There was no point trying to chase them down.” They say a comfy bed, a hot shower and access to good food is what they looked forward to at the end of each day. Colin says for the most part cars were really considerate on both trips. “It was challenging, not something I’d done before. I go mountain biking now with Maddi, but this has all stemmed from that initial ride and I kind of ride with her now, which is cool,” he says. When Maddi, Colin and Sarah, reached Cape Reinga, more than three weeks after leaving home, they say it felt like a another day. “It doesn’t really feel like you’re finished,” Maddi says. “But we had a car with a bike rack waiting for us, which was the difference,” adds Colin.

Big brothers bring big changes Max Frethey Ten-year-old Jonah Lampard meets up with Mitch Wilkinson to hang out once a week for at least an hour. “It’s really fun,” Jonah says. Mitch is Jonah’s Big Brother mentor. The Big Brothers Big Sisters programme pairs adult mentors with children in need of a positive role model. Jonah’s mother, Cara, says that Jonah’s father lives in Western Australia, so he doesn’t get quality time with him. Through the Big Brothers system, Cara says that Jonah now has a fatherly figure in the picture. “It’s really beneficial for the children,” she says. The kids and their mentors form a close bond and connection. Cara says that she can see Jonah’s “excitement every week” as his hang out session with Mitch gets closer. “It lights him up inside.” The pairing of child to mentor is often based on mutual interests. “We both like hats,” Jonah says. This lack of male mentors has led to the creation of a ‘22 Men for 2022’ campaign in the hopes that more men can be encouraged to sign up as mentors for the programme. “There’s nothing to lose and everything to gain,” Cara says about being a mentor. “It’s good for the children and good for the mentors.” Mitch echoes a similar sentiment, saying that it is great “giving back to the community”. He reccomends that anyone thinking about becoming a mentor should “just do it…. It doesn’t take a lot of your time, just an hour a week”.

Opinion editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz facebook.com/nelsonweekly topsouthmedia.co.nz

I agree the hall is essential in Stoke, but the work has to be cost-effective. The idea of retaining the front facade, but having an entirely new structure attached, has merit. Let's get the options costed as an urgent priority. Whatever is proceeded with, let's have a maximum contract price. I'm so over projects having significant cost overruns. If the Nelson Airport terminal could come in under budget then other projects should be able to as well. Dennis Goodman The RSA won two world wars, is that contribution enough? Maybe they can offset it with the cost of not weeding around Nelson? Rayon Mackenzie Yes, this building should be rebuilt with original facade at least. $4.3 million to strengthen an old, poorly-designed hall? How much to demolish it and rebuild something better? Andy Williams Why does anything the council are involved in cost so much? Even a bus stop costs more than most people’s garages. That is a ludicrous amount of money to spend on a building that is past its use by. It is time the council paused with their grand spending of ratepayer’s money and started being frugal. The same as the ratepayers have to be because they pay more and more to the council every year. Claire Kelly Is there any merit in shifting RSA and memorials to Greenmeadows? Glenda Buschl Council can't afford to pull weeds let alone repair an historical building. Margaret Cotton

How many times a year is it used for major events? Five or six, if that? Steve Lawson Wonder what the original cost was and who priced the “repairs/strengthening”. Colin Appleton The mayor gave that money (and more) to the Cawthron instead. So now if the job is to be done, it will require a 4.5 per cent rate rise on top of the huge increase coming in July. Dan McGuire Spending that kind of money, they would have been better off demolishing it and building a new one because it certainly hasn't any architectural value. Heslops builds functional, modern, automotive workshop

There has been an exciting development at Lloyd Heslops Motors – they have recently upgraded their automotive workshop. Heslops Group is located at the site of the old freezing works in Kotua Place, Stoke, and for the past 20 years the company has managed to operate their automotive workshop in one of the older buildings. During Covid, they decided to demolish it and build a fantastic new vehicle workshop to suit their specific requirements. It has been fitted with new offices, brand-new equipment, and it has especially been designed to provide clearance for campervans, complete with new hoists that can handle them efficiently. There’s been lots of positive feedback from customers who are delighted with the new workshop, which is spacious, modern, and with plenty of natural light.

Heslops has recently built a new vehicle workshop to suit their specific requirements. It has been fitted with new offices, brand-new equipment, and has especially been designed to provide clearance for campervans.

History

Lloyd Heslop Motors Limited was established in 1984 by Lloyd Heslop. For many years, it became apparent that the growth of the company would eventually require shifting to a larger premises. Lloyd had been searching for the ideal site for almost 10 years and spent considerable time and resources looking at dif-

ferent alternatives. Early in 2001, Lloyd was offered the old freezing works site on an ‘as is, where is basis.’ By November 2001, he was committed to the establishment of a dream – the resurrection of a site that should have been demolished and the establishment of an entire transport complex. With 7 acres to play with, Lloyd Heslop Motors had room for all the features they required plus add-on

services catering for every need in the transport industry. Their employee base rose by another eight people in 2002 when the decision was made to hire their own builders. 2002-2003 was an extremely busy time for all. Lloyd and the build team worked on site 24/7; while the management team continued to operate Lloyd Heslop Motors and set up schematic budgets and financing for Barnicoat Developments Ltd to further their development. The signage went up and the journey of Heslop Group continues today.

Experienced staff lead auto division

Heslop’s automotive division has been in business for almost two decades now, led by two longstanding mechanics who have over 70 years’ experience between them. “We are really enjoying the new workshop,” says Gary Coles, who has been workshop manager for the past 9 years. “It

is light and spacious, it has better car bay conditions, and we’re better able to handle campervans now, so it’s all been carefully thought about.” With one staff member having recently left the business, Gary and Phil are the only two staff members working in the automotive workshop at present. “So, we’re looking to increase our staff – ideally it will be people with a passion for campervans and motorhomes,” he says. The workshop provides servicing, mechanical repairs, and general repairs. “If there’s something we can’t do, we know where to send them to,” says Gary. “The idea is people leave their vehicle with us and we’ll have it done by the time they come back.” Recently, a couple popped into Heslops, left their vehicle with them for half a day, borrowing one of the courtesy vehicles, then later they picked it up and were on their way again. With so many people’s overseas travel plans put on hold due to Covid, the team at Heslops

automotive workshop are seeing quite a number of people coming in with campervans. “Instead of going overseas they’re travelling around the country, and hopefully halfway through the year things will get even busier.” Gary and Phil’s work mainly involves mechanical repairs including a lot of work on cars, but these days the majority of their work is campervans. “Phil is my ‘right hand man,’ and although I’m the boss, we share the work between us,” says Gary. “He’s 63 and I’m 58; we’ve both been in the trade since we left school.” Gary says they are both very different from each other. “He’s very calm and quiet, whereas ‘I’m like a rat out of a drainpipe.’” If you want to book your vehicle into Heslop Automotive Workshop for servicing or repairs, send an email to: carworkshop@heslops.co.nz or phone 03 543 9400 (Ext 2).

Quality servicing and repairs

Heslops Automotive caters for all makes and models of cars, light commercial vehicles, 4 X 4 vehicles, campervans, and caravans. Their new workshop offers vehicle servicing, fuel system machine, mechanical repairs, WOF’s, auto electrical & engine management systems, and courtesy cars are available (bookings are required). The new workshop also has a wheel alignment machine, and VTNZ has a compliance certificate (COF) lane onsite. Bookings are essential for this service via VTNZ. The workshop also does heavy transport modifications and tow bars, and they have a fuel system cleaning machine for petrol and diesel engines which will clean out the engine and complete fuel system. This can save you a lot of money by not having to replace or repair fuel pump injectors. All

Well stocked parts department

The new workshop is backed by the parts department, which supplies parts for all kinds of vehicles, including trucks and marine en-

gines. Heslops source their parts nationwide from local suppliers and because Heslops holds the franchises for brands like Scania, Man, Iveco, Western Star and Detroit Diesel, it gives the company access to a wealth of parts and information, and they are very competitive when buying parts. Heslop’s parts department has a team of four who have many years of experience in the industry between them. They have the expertise to guide you with your request and source the parts required. Having both a car and truck workshop to look after, means they always carry a great range of parts in stock.

Busy truck workshop

Heslops Truck workshop is a purpose-built facility which boasts optimum workshop efficiency with an overhead gantry, up-todate tooling and equipment, heavy duty jacks, overhead airlines, oil dispensing facilities, waste oil collection and easy-to-clean areas. Hoists also create a safer environment to facilitate cost

Boyack highlights housing, health and transport as priorities

Proud to work with Heslops

Housing, transport, health, and Covid-19 recovery will continue to be the biggest priorities for Nelson MP Rachel Boyack in 2022. Rachel addressed the Rotary Club of Nelson West at the Nelson Golf Club last Tuesday. She described her first year in Parliament as a “frustrating” one for not only those in politics but for everyone in the community. “The lowlight was Covid, and the highlight was Covid. We’ve experienced the toughest years of our lives, but we’ve also seen the best in people.” Rachel said looking back on the challenges she set herself last year, she feels proud that she had made progress on her priorities. These included housing, a new hospital for Nelson, and transport which will all continue to be at the top of her list. “Fixing the housing issue is a bit like turning around a tanker - it will take time, and we are pulling a range of levers to turn around a crisis that has been building for decades,” she said. “We’re making it easier to build new houses, we’re building more houses than any Government since the 1970s, and consent numbers have more than tripled in the last decade. “My focus this year will be to continue to advocate locally and work with local leaders like NCC, TDC, and Kāinga Ora on solutions to add the right kind of housing stock to the region.” Rachel said hospital officials are working hard to start work on rebuilding Nelson Hospital by 2024. “We know this is something Nelson desperately needs. A new hospital was something that I campaigned

Nelson MP Rachel Boyack spoke to the Rotary Club of Nelson West last week. Photo: Supplied. on, and I’m pleased that I’ve been able to advocate to the Government and secure this commitment.” Recovering and rebuilding from Covid-19 will also be a priority this includes progressing the vaccination rollout and rebuilding the economy. She says she has been pleased to see the wheels start moving on transport plans for the city, as well as see both councils in the region work more closely together on transport issues. In late 2021, Waka Kotahi released the final Nelson Future Access Study Business Case, its preferred programme for the city’s major routes, which was unanimously supported by the council, and subsequently endorsed by the Waka Kotahi board. “This is a huge shift - we finally have a plan. I hope to bring the Minister of Transport to Nelson this year so I can show him some of the challenges we have around our transport network,” Rachel said. “Transport issues in Nelson have been building up over decades of indecision and arguments and I’m pleased that we have a clear way forward.”

ZUMBA GOLD IS IDEAL FOR SENIORS AND BEGINNERS

H

ere’s a great way to start 2022 – why not join a local Zumba Gold class? “I have two classes a week,” says experienced Zumba Gold Instructor/Personal Trainer, Odette Petzold. “One is on Tuesdays at Olive Estate, starting at 10.00am, and the other class is on Thursdays at the Warnes Indoor Bowls Hall in Stoke, at 11am.” Odette’s classes focus on all elements of fitness: cardiovascular, strength, balance and flexibility. “Zumba Gold is designed for the active older adult, beginners and people who may be physically limited, with lower intensity movements that are less intimidating than regular Zumba but still using the same amazing Latin rhythm. As class numbers are below 30, no bookings are required; however, masks should be worn on entry and exit. “I’d love for you to try it first before you make any commitment, so I am offering a Free Class Pass, and people are welcome to contact me with any questions.”

Send a text message to Odette on 022 360 8323. Prior to settling in New Zealand in 2019, Odette was a classical ballet dancer in South Africa for 16 years, then, after a couple of injuries, she became more active with adventure sports. “After some severe injuries to my back and hips I started looking at more specialised training, so I went into personal training with the focus on trauma and injury rehabilitation. I am now also a recognised “Live Stronger” balance and fall prevention instructor. I enjoy working with older people because they’re determined, eager and always willing to give their best”

PILATES HELPS TO ACHIEVE WHOLE BODY FITNESS

E

ver thought about Pilates? It's the ideal way to bring positive change in 2022. Located upstairs at 114 Hardy Street, Kate Burton and the team at Pilates Nelson offer a range of classes and, although some are already full, several still have space available. "The Over 50's Beginners Class on Tuesdays at 9am is a popular choice and other beginners’ classes are Thursday 7pm and Monday at noon. If you're looking to fit a class into your working week, the Early Bird classes on Tuesday and Thursday (7am) and Open Pilates Saturday (9.30am) are good choices, and there are also evening classes." Pilates Nelson is adhering to all current Covid restrictions, and under the red alert level setting, they will only be having 12 people per class. “Having set classes that students attend keeps the studio in each little bubble, so we know who was in that particular class,” says Kate. “We also have invested in new air purifiers to maintain air quality.”

Kate says, "Pilates is an exercise system which moves logically through the body to achieve a fine balance of strength and flexibility. It helps to correct muscle imbalances, releases tension, improves body awareness and posture, and is regarded as one of the safest and precise forms of conditioning available." New Barre Classes will be starting soon with experienced Barre Instructor Hannah Challis from Wellington. Barre combines ballet, pilates and yoga. Each class gives you a full body workout, enhancing flexibility, strength and balance. Classes start 9 February at Pilates Nelson and will be held on Wednesdays at 9am and on Fridays at 5pm. Natureland - come down for a conservation conversation! life jackets (from 3kg to 40 kg). “Hiring is popular for families with little ones, as it saves them travelling with bulky items that may get damaged or lost in transit,” says owner, Marianne Hart Biggs. “We highly recommend people using the hire option with us, as it’s both cost effective and environmentally friendly. For example, an infant capsule can be rented repeatedly for the duration of its life span before it gets recycled.” All hire items are cleaned to the highest standard and well maintained by the experienced team at Baby On The Move Nelson. There’s always something exciting happening at Natureland over summer. For starters, there are 5 red-crowned kakariki chicks and 3 yellow crowned kakariki chicks in our conservation corner. They hatched before Christmas and are starting to fledge. You can also come and see our latest conservation/education project, breed and release of monarch butterflies in our purpose-built tunnel house. *Watch our Facebook page for details of our next release. So far, we’ve had two public butterfly releases! Natureland is always hunting for volunteers and offers a range of roles depending on your needs. Wanted: keeper assistant, animal food prep, and ticket office volunteers right now. Contact Lindsey on volunteers@natureland.nz for more details. We provide PPE for volunteers and have strong protocols in place to ensure everyone is safe. NB: Natureland is a vaccine pass site and is open in red with strict protocols and capped numbers.

Ceramics heat up Suter for summer exhibition Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The very best ceramics from the Top of the South are heating up the Suter Art Gallery this summer. Tens of thousands of locals and visitors alike have already made their way to the Fire & Earth exhibition, with 25,000 expected over the season. “It has been received brilliantly,” says curator Sarah McClintock. The biennial exhibition opened in November and celebrates the best of contemporary ceramics in the region.

It was born in 2017 after Sarah said they felt there had been “a bit of a lull” in the Suter showcasing the area’s vast number of ceramicists. “Nelson is so known for its clay, and makers with clay.” It boasts some of the biggest names in ceramics in Aotearoa, but equally, it engages people with those who have only just begun. “We really wanted to make sure that it was an exhibition open to anyone. There was no age cap, and the youngest submitter was eight.” Over 100 individual works were submitted for the exhibition, with a little less than 50 making the gallery. “There are some brilliant

pots and sculptures that didn’t make it into the show.” Sarah says the exhibition is all about pushing the boundaries of what can be made with clay. “It’s about pushing the ceramicists to show us their most ambitious work. It’s showcasing the best of what they can do, and it’s exciting for the viewer.” Raw or refined, practical or pretty, the exhibition showcases just how diverse clay can be - from Royce McGlashen’s 90 handmade beakers to Katie Gold’s breathtakingly beautiful coloured bloomers. “For me, ceramics are so accessible. It’s bound to the

earth and has this immediacy to it that other art forms don’t necessarily have,” says Sarah. Sarah says they have had support from both the Nelson Potters Association, and this year, Jarden, which has come on board as a sponsor. “It’s really nice to see that the whole community can recognise this as an important thing to celebrate.” Fire & Earth is on at the Suter Art Gallery until 13 February and Sarah says she already can’t wait for the 2023 exhibition. “I’m impressed every time we have it, it gets the makers engaged and I can’t wait to see what they do next time.”

ARTS Adam Summer Celebration cancelled: The Nelson Music Festival Trust has made the decision to cancel the 2022 Adam Summer Celebration. Chair of the trust, Colleen Marshall, says after considering all options, they decided that the health and safety of the community of musicians, audiences and supporters was the most important thing. All tickets will be fully refunded. Hannah in the Wars comes to The Boathouse: A Nelson songwriter who has been linked to The Cure is set to perform at The Boathouse on 25 February. Hannah in the Wars has returned from nine years the UK and Europe where she made an album with Roger O’Donnell. Her alternative post-punk sound is inspired by PJ Harvey and Nick Cave, overlaid with intricate orchestral arrangements and incisive poetry. Tickets are $15 and are available at www.under theradar.co.nz

Athletic College Old Boys celebrates a third Tasman Premier League title. Photo: Chris Symes/Shuttersport.

ACOB cruise to third title on the trot Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

A one-sided victory in the Tasman Premier League final has illustrated the dominance of Athletic College Old Boys in recent seasons. The team once again went unbeaten throughout its campaign and capped it off with an emphatic eight wicket win over Wakatu at Saxton Oval on Sunday. Skipper Ollie Jones-Allen heaped the praise on his players following the club’s third consecutive title. With so many rep players in its ranks, ACOB was often required to test the depth of its squad this season when its stars were on Griffin’s duty. After winning the toss and opting to bat, it was slow going for Wakatu from the outset following the early departures of Brad Smith and

Nathan Defu. Skipper Daniel Hooper delivered with 60, combining with Bryan Kramer for a 66run fourth wicket partnership. When the pair fell however, so too did any prospects of a large total with Wakatu dismissed for 168. Wickets were shared among the ACOB bowlers, Ronan Restieaux, Rueben Smith, and Thomas Zohrab each claiming two apiece. ACOB made short work of the chase, as Thomas Zohrab and Jonty Raxworthy came out all guns blazing. Their aggressive approach saw ACOB cruising at almost ten an over before Jonty was stumped with the score already at 76 after ten. Restieaux continued the momentum with 42 from 31 as Thomas reached his half century. Thomas was then joined at the crease by twin brother

David with the brothers sealing the emphatic victory with eight wickets and more than twenty overs to spare. Despite a dominant campaign, ACOB was made to work for its place in the final. Car Company Stoke/Nayland looked destined to upset the unbeaten Athletic College Old Buys before Jonty Raxworthy turned the screws in the 44th over. A three-wicket maiden saw Stoke/Nayland fall from the assured position of 155/6 to dire straits at 155/9 in the space of six deliveries. Backing up his ten-wicket haul for the Nelson Griffins last weekend, Jonty took 5/20 to dismiss Stoke/Nayland for 165 and claim a 33-run victory. Earlier, Jonty and Thomas Zohrab put on 61 for the first wicket before ACOB had its own spectacular collapse. From 61/1, ACOB crumbled to 113-8 before some lower

order heroics from Reuben Smith. Opener Chris Dittimer’s 36 got Stoke off to a solid start and with Sean Neal unbeaten on 40 with just 43 needed to win, the result appeared in the bag for the visitors. Jonty had other ideas though and castled the final four batsmen to book his side’s spot in Sunday’s final. Wakatu had a much easier time of it against Taylors Contacting Wanderers/Motueka in the other semi. He combined with Alex Brogan for a patient 109-run partnership which saw Wanderers 171-2 after 45 overs. Despite the early loss of Brad Smith, it was a comfortable chase in the end for Wakatu, reaching the target with the loss of just five wickets. Tonight will see the final round of the T20 competition with the final to be played at on Saturday.

After spending 30 years in the tattoo studio, Warwick Bremner, aka ‘Wok’, will now be helping people modify their bodies in the gym. Wok is hanging up his needle as he embarks on a new challenge as a personal trainer. No stranger to stepping out of his comfort zone, Wok recently retired from competitive bodybuilding having won his final event at the age of 52. Wok says he was not gifted with bodybuilding genetics and at 20 years old weighed just 58kg. “I never had particularly great muscle building ability, it just came through sheer years of pounding away at the iron.” Eventually, Wok was able to almost double his weight and packed on enough mass to tip the scales at 90. “It was a long slow process.” Wok’s journey began as an eightyear-old when he found a book featuring bodybuilders and was fascinated. “At about the age of 14, I realised weight training was what was involved in looking like that and that’s where the love affair started.” Wok has worked as a tattoo artist for 30 years, most recently at a studio in Tāhunanui. “Being such a mental job with no physical aspect to it, gym has always been my sanctuary.” After spending a year out of the tattoo studio to write a novel, Wok felt the time was right to begin his next career chapter. Wok says he had always contemplated a shift from the studio to the

gym. “Tattooing paid the bills, but I am now in a situation where I can give it a crack for three years and see if I love it.” Wok is now employed as a personal trainer at CityFitness in Nelson. He says it has been a challenge getting back to the books. “It’s quite daunting and exciting to find out how much I don’t know.” With about 70 per cent of his body tattooed, Wok says his body art proved a hinderance in bodybuilding competitions. “Tattoos aren’t going to accentuate muscle on stage, they are distracting and just not good for the image.” In his younger days, Wok could alleviate the issue with a strong tanning solution which covered tattoos. However, this has since been disallowed. “The new stuff doesn’t cover them as well, so you have to be better to beat someone that is not tattooed. “If you were identical the non-tattooed person would probably win it.” Despite this disadvantage, Wok went on to win a number of competitions including novice championships and the NABBA nationals. Most recently, Wok won a gold and bronze medal at the 2021 New Zealand Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness Pro League in Christchurch. He says he is now in the best shape of his life as he prepares for his latest challenge. “I couldn’t be happier with the encouragement from all staff and the other trainers at CityFitness. I am looking forward to helping people achieve their goals.”
