Kiwis love to visit Nelson
Nelson has been ranked as the third most popular holiday spot for Kiwis, shows a survey by travel website Wotif. The survey was released last week and shows Queenstown as the most popular domestic holiday venue, followed by Wellington, Nelson, Wanaka and Auckland. The same survey showed the beach ranked highest when it came to New Zealander’s
favourite place to holiday, which may explain Nelson’s high ranking. Thirty one per cent of the survey’s 1531 respondents said they like to spend their holiday relaxing. The survey’s release is the second piece of good news for the region’s tourism industry, with Nelson City Council last week announcing it was taking full ownership of Nelson Tasman Tourism. It comes after
former half-owner Tasman District Council decided to drop its funding of the tourism marketing and promotions group. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says the transfer will ensure that the services provided by Nelson Tasman Tourism can continue to be delivered, in a cost-effective manner. “Tourism currently brings over $500 million to the Nelson and Tasman economy.
Nelson City Council is committed to continue investing in the sector through tourism development activities and the i-Site. This is an opportunity to use closer ties with NTT, to leverage major events and our regional facilities in a way that adds value to ratepayers.” Nelson Tasman Tourism chair Phil Taylor says the board welcomes the decision.
Merchant Navy men remembered

More than 100 people paid their respects to those who toiled away in Nelson’s once-large Merchant Navy. Nelson once boasted more than 70 shipping companies, making its Merchant Navy one of the biggest in the country. So when in 2010 the government acknowledged the efforts of the Merchant Navy in wartime and created Merchant Navy Day, it was no surprise that Nelson’s annual parade would become so popular. Dave Laws, who helps organise the day, says he’s thrilled with how it’s grown over the four years. “We had a great turn out, really great. I thought the guest speaker was really interesting and it was nice to have the mayor there as well.” Nelson City Council is supporting the day -- which is officially on Wednesday -- by flying the “Red Duster” on top of the council building this week. Dave says the reason the parade and ceremony is so popular in Nelson is because of our history with the sea. “When I first went to sea there were 70 companies here in Nelson. Now it’s just fishing boats, but there’s still a lot of us who worked in the Merchant Navy.”

“Nelson really, it’s a great spot. We like to go over Golden Bay way and round to Havelock as well.”
“My favourite holiday spot is Nelson. It’s a magnificent place, delightful, you’ve got every facility that exists. I don’t go anywhere else for my holidays.”
“Probably Wellington, I have family up there and I just love the cafe culture, it’s a little bit like Nelson.”
It’s our birthday
This week Nelson Weekly celebrates its fourth birthday. The Weekly’s first edition was September 7, 2010 and it has been published every Tuesday since. The community newspaper was a spin-off of the Richmond-based Waimea Weekly, which has been running for nine years. Publisher and owner Steve Page says the success of the paper has been its absolute
dedication to covering the community with passion and giving a platform for local businesses Steve Page. to successfully advertise. Being the only locally-owned newspaper in town doesn’t hurt either, he says. “It’s a simple formula, our paper goes to every home and people love to read it because
we make sure it’s interesting and relevant. That means those all-important advertisers get plenty of response to their ads, because they’re seen. “You only have to flick through our paper to see that the majority of local advertisers chose to do business with us and, as much as we’d like to think it’s because we’re such nice guys, in reality it’s because advertising with the Nelson Weekly works.”

More awards for local heroes The four men who saved two lives from a sinking car last winter have been recognised by Nelson City Council for their efforts. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese presented the Royal Humane Society Awards for Bravery to local men Kyle Paki Paki and Philip Walker, and honoured Atawhai man Gary Miller and British tourist Adam Black, this morning in a special ceremony held in the Council Chamber. The awards are in recognition of the men’s actions on 13 July 2013, which lead to the successful rescue of Filemoni Fa’avae and Ali Fa’avae from their vehicle, after it crashed into Saltwater Creek. The men also pulled driver Janice Fa’avae from the submerged vehicle though, sadly, she did not survive the incident despite their best efforts. Rachel presented Kyle Paki Paki and Philip Walker with the Royal Humane Society’s Bronze Medal. Gary Miller and Adam Black were unable to attend the ceremony, but have been awarded the Royal Humane Society’s Certificate of Merit. Rachel offered her heartfelt

It is a privilege to be able to publicly recognise this courage. “The impact of an event like the accident at Saltwater Creek is long-standing, and surely

I hope that we can all be inspired by these men’s extraordinary courage to live our own lives with compassion and bravery, whatever situations we find ourselves in.” The four men also won the South Island’s Pride of New Zealand Award for bravery and heroism last month, and next week will travel to Auckland for the national finals. Stoke’s Methodist Church is selling its pews as it makes way for its new chapel. For decades the three and a half metrelong pews, made of heart-rimu, have been used by parishioners at the Stoke church. But last year the church’s two buildings failed an earthquake strength test, so it decided to sell its main church building and redevelop its adjacent hall and youth building into a new chapel, featuring a hall, offices, meeting room and kitchen. The old church was sold in July and was recently pulled down by the new owner. Parishioner Keith Drogemuller says it’s an exciting time for the church and while the renovated building will be much more comfortable, it will be done with a nod to its past. The design of the
An artist’s impression of the new Stoke Methodist church. new chapel has been made to replicate its old chapel and a massive stained glass picture that was saved from its old building will be used in the new chapel, as will some doors that were removed from the old church. “We want to bring the place up a wee bit. Make it more attractive for those wanting to rent it. There will be modern
heating and insulation right through. We need to move away from having a large space dedicated to just one hour a week, having chairs and carpet means we can use the chapel as a multi-use centre, which was impossible with the fixed pews in the big church.” The church is hoping building work can start in October and be finished by March next year. But before work begins they need to get rid of some old furniture and other miscellaneous items, so they’re hosting a garage sale this Saturday, September 6, from 9am to 12noon. At the sale will be 20 of the 3.3 metre rimu pews, plenty of chairs and other furniture and items. The sale will be outside the hall on Stoke’s Neale Ave.

Funeral home expands Waimea Richmond Funeral Services is selling part of its land on the corner of Salisbury and Champion roads, and is planning to redevelop its funeral home on the 1.9 hectare property. The property is owned by the well-known Day family which also operates the monumental masons, G Miller and Sons, on the site, as well as funeral services in Nelson and Motueka and a crematorium in Hope.

have been negotiating for quite some time” and that the sale was imminent. “We are selling some of the land but we are not leaving the site. We will be retaining a substantial part of it and building a modern, new funeral home there,” he says. Francis says Richmond is growing rapidly and the existing funeral home is not large enough. The redeveloped funeral home would complement its services at Marsden House in Nelson.

Free parking extended The success of free car parking in Nelson city and whether it will be extended, will be decided by councillors early next month. Nelson City Council announced last week that on October 9 it will assess data to see if the free parking scheme has made the CBD busier and put
more money through the tills of retailers. The free parking trial was due to finish at the end of September but the council has extended that until October 19, so it has time to make an informed decision about its future. Mayor Rachel Reese says the council has already had in-
formal meeting with business owners but needs the proper analysis of monitoring data. “Promoting and encouraging a vibrant and bustling city centre remains a top priority for the council. Considering the data, and finding the most effective and sustainable way to do so, is essential.”

Nelson’s Dr Donna Swift has received a national peace award for her work in the area of girls’ violence. The Sonja Davies Peace Award promotes initiatives that advance peace in New Zealand and was presented by the New Horizons for Women Trust. The award is available to a woman or group led by a woman, who are developing an initiative that will help them create a more peaceful world at home, school, the workplace, or in the community, and includes a financial component. Donna’s successful application will see her take the research she has done at an academic level into girls’ violence and other issues facing girls and young women, and use it to create user-friendly resources for those working at the coalface with girls– such as parents and teachers. “The girls of today are the

The Economy and the Environment. Public meeting with Labour’s Deputy Leader David Parker. Freya Fleming, 9, running around Toyworld Nelson collecting toys in 15 minute shopping spree she won in a competition. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Mon 8 September 7:30pm
15 mins to grab $500 worth of toys Freya Fleming experienced every child’s dream on Saturday, given 15 minutes to run through Toyworld and grab whatever toys she wanted until it reached $500. The nine year old, who attends St Joseph’s School, won a promotion with Toyworld Nelson and The Hits, which encouraged customers to sign up to the store’s online database and go into the draw to take part in the 15 minute spree. The 15 minutes was plenty of time as Freya snatched big ticket items — like two scooters — within the first minute.
Her mother and older sister helped, while her father had the calculator and tallied up the cost. Freya — who was generous enough to pick out items for her cousin’s birthday and for her sister as well — said “that was hard” after she had frantically run around the store trying to gather everything she had put on a shopping list the night before. She says she was “screaming” with excitement when she was notified that she was going to take part. Toyworld owner Lindsay Hicks

was surprised by how generous Freya was — picking out items for friends and family. “It was a good promotion, I can’t fault it. I’m pleased she got it, I really am.” He says the idea for the promotion came from The Hits and it was good chance to create some buzz in the store after a hard winter. “We just wanted to get something positive going and to help the customers feel like they were getting something back from a business,” he says. “We’d definitely look at doing it again.”

Vinyl success spurs second sale After the success of the last record sale, Grant Smithies is holding another one at the Freehouse, titled Black Vinyl Brown Beer. It will be held on September 6 between 1-5pm and will feature thousands of vinyl records. Grant says it’s not just a “shop situation”, and other people are encouraged to bring their own vinyls to sell or swap. “If people have them in the garage or they’ve
got spare records, they’re more than welcome to set up their own stall. The idea is that it’s a community market for people interested in vinyl records,” he says. Due to the closure of Everyman Records, there is no retail store that sells a large amount of records. To contact Grant for more information, or to enquire about having a stall of your own, phone 546 8335.

Blokes open up their magnificent sheds Blokes’ sheds are a place of wonder and intrigue but this month they’ll be a place for exploring. The Life Education Trust’s Blokes in Sheds tour is being held again on September 21, and will give locals the chance to peer into some classic kiwi sheds. One of the sheds that will form part of the tour is Roger and Dave Humphries, which includes a range of vehicles from Model A Fords to Indian motorcycles and even army vehicles. In recent years as Roger neared retirement, the Humphries Brothers decided to build a purpose-built shed to store their collection and give them both somewhere to go and work on their restoration projects. Both Roger and Dave are always on the lookout for something new and different, and are fortunate enough to have the vision and skills to take some thing that looks, well beyond repair and turn it into something special. Their passion for many things automotive is obvious when you engage them in conversations around their shed and what’s in it. Roger is particularly interested in Model T and Model A Fords from the early 1920s,
Dave Humphries in his shed with his 1947 Whizzer and 1959 Apache. whilst Dave’s passion is centred around Indian Motorcycles and Mopar Muscle Cars. It’s not often you go on a vacation to Brisbane and decide to buy a 1940s World War II Bren Gun Carrier, or take your favourite Indian on the annual Indian Motorcycle pilgrimage, yet Roger and Dave think nothing of it. Roger is currently working on the restoration of a 1918 Dodge car whilst Dave is tinkering
away on two early 1920s Indians, and they are both keen to see a good turnout for the Tour to share their toys with the community. The Blokes in Sheds tour starts at 10am on Sunday, September 21. To buy tickets visit www.ticket direct.co.nz, or visit the Theatre Royal or Richmond Mall. Tickets are selling for $15 with children, 12 and under, touring for free.

National hip hop ‘shakedown’ in town
Nine crews from Richmond hip hop dance studio Mad Beat will need to be in sync for this year’s Shakedown competition, to be held in the Waimea College Hall this Saturday. Shakedown was initially organised to provide dancers from Nelson with a chance to compete with crews from around the South Island. But this year it will become a national event with 44 crews and 17 solo dancers from throughout the country competing, and event director
Gemma Laing says that will lift the standard to a new high. “The caliber of this year’s entries is, by far, the highest we have seen and we are looking forward to a entertaining, energetic display of hip hop dance,” Gemma says. “Many of the competitors are nationally-recognised crews that competed at the national champs in Auckland earlier in the year.” One of Mad Beat’s crews, Descendants, will be making their debut at Shakedown and
coach Ashley Belk says they have had a hectic few weeks preparing for the event. Descendants has girls from Waimea College, Garin College and Nelson College for Girls. Gemma says one of the highlights of Shakedown will be the Mega Crew section, which involves crews of 15 to 25 dancers onstage at once. Tickets cost $10 for school-aged children and $15 for adults, with a family of four costing $40. There will be limited door sales from 6pm.

Daffodil Day – Tuesday August 26: The Cancer Society has had another successful Daffodil Day appeal. The annual fundraising event was supported by a very generous public when it hits the streets on Friday, August 29. Although an exact amount hasn’t been tallied yet, it is looking like the Cancer Society will make a similar amount to last year, just under $100,000. Richmond Mall Pines Volleyball Team – Tuesday August 26: The Richmond Pines volleyball team have won their third consecutive national title, after competing in the Volleyball New Zealand Club Championships in Tauranga. The team played North Harbour in the final and won 3-1, while Mt Maunganui came third and an Auckland team completed the top four. Patrick Shone earned himself best setter in the all star six, while Ben Glue was best spiker and local player Teryn Proracki played an outstanding final, despite a severe stomach bug.

Registered Electrician
Ph: 021 482 088 AH: 542 2328 Email: rddron@gmail.com
4 Ernest Place, Brightwater
PV Solar Systems - Taking the Power Back The team at Rowan Dron Electrical are passionate about harnessing energy from the sun and using it to power households. They have completed numerous solar installations throughout the region and their customers now enjoy dramatically reduced power bills. With a PV Solar System, PV solar panels convert sunlight into DC (Direct Current) electricity, which is then passed through an inverter creating viable AC electricity. This AC electricity is used to power the household, while any excess electricity you generate can then be sold back to the electricity companies. Because they use light from the sun (and not heat) they will continue to generate electricity even in light cloud. The cost of PV solar panels has fallen dramatically in the last few years while, at the same time, electricity costs just keep on rising. A typical 2kW system can now give you a 6.9% return on investment! That is more than your bank will pay and it means that your system will definitely pay for itself. The bigger the system, the bigger the return. The cost of installing a PV Solar System will vary depending on the number of panels you need and the complexity of the installation. An average family home will need a 2kW system which, fully-installed with panels and inverter,
costs around $8,000, excl gst. How long it takes for a system to pay for itself varies depending on the size, but an average system takes around 6-8 years to pay for itself completely. While it is possible to sell electricity back to the grid, not all power companies will pay you for your excess electricity and the prices they offer can vary. Rowan Dron Electrical can explain how to get the best price for your surplus generation. Their entire team are qualified solar installers, as well as being Certified Electricians with additional manufacturers training. They use the best quality gear, all manufactured in New Zealand and Europe, and their PV panels carry a 25 year production warranty, while your inverter is warranted for between 5 and 10 years. Rowan Dron Electrical are happy to provide a no-obligation, free, onsite assessment. Once they are confident that a PV system will work for you, they will put together a free quotation based on the correct system for your site and your power needs. Because they are electricians, they can advise you on ways you can maximise the savings from your system. Contact them for more information or to arrange your free household PV assessment. munity. Dave says staff from the Richmond centre, one of 31 around New Zealand, are now visiting clients and their families in their homes around the Waimea district and in Stoke. He says they offer a combination of advice, financial education, expert budgeting, insolvency services and ongoing support, to people living under the burden of unmanageable debt. "The organisation understands that unmanageable financial debt places the biggest burden on marriages and family lives, and this initiative is to
give something back to the community," he says. Dave says clients can access their services by contacting CAP directly, although many are also referred through government agencies and other community organisations. A CAP debt coach will visit new clients and their families to understand their financial situation and any other support they may need. CAP is presently helping 613 families around the country work their way out of debt. The Richmond centre can be contacted on 0508 227 111.
Nelson man Oliver Schoenfeld is Superman as he jumps from a Abel Tasman Sky Dive plane during the Good Vibes 2014 event, over the weekend.
600 jumps during sky dive event
The annual Good Vibes sky diving event was reduced in size, but not in fun. The four-day event finished over the weekend and saw 35 jumpers take part, combining for 150 jumps each day. Christine Gabrielle, the sales and marketing manager for Abel Tasman Sky Dive, says it was a hugely successful weekend. "It was a back-to-basics event this year. We wanted to focus more on the sky diving and we did that. It went really well, no problems at all." As well as the sky diving, the fireworks display from Motueka Airport on Saturday night was a highlight.

A catalogue detailing all auction items is available. This can be found on the fair’s Facebook page (Appleby School Country Fair) or by contacting the school office on 544 2898. The Facebook site details all aspects of the fair, so be sure to ‘like’ the page if you want to be kept up to date with the goings on. Before heading home, fair visitors should stock up their gardens and the pantries from the popular farmer’s market and plant stalls. The latter will have its usual extensive array of seedlings, plants, shrubs, citrus varieties and herbs. These have been lovingly nurtured for the past few months by the dedicated plant people, so are healthy and ready for a new home.
The farmer’s market stocks fresh veggies and produce from generous local suppliers. Most of these are freshly picked on the morning of the fair. Hen houses and orchards are raided too, to provide free-range eggs, citrus and home-grown nuts. The farmer’s market also stocks home-made jams, chutneys, lemon honey and mountains of delicious home baking. For the chefs amongst you, there are a number of baking competitions held on the day. Kids should be rolling truffles, Mums and Dads submitting their best cake or slice, and Nana and Pop baking off for the grandparents’ trophy! All entries need to be dropped into the school library early on Friday 5th September. Start time for the fair is 11am and it proceeds whatever the weather. Parking is provided in neighbouring paddocks, but it does fill quickly so don’t be late! Please follow the instructions of the friendly parking wardens.

Police report with Area Commander
Steve Greally
Last Friday a number of Nelson Bays Police received awards at a ceremony at the Police Station. While many of those awards were acknowledging dedicated service over a significant number of years, some staff also received special awards for outstanding service. Our Youth Aid Sergeant Karl Parfitt (or Charlie as most people know him) received an Area Commander's Award for the work he has done to help young people in Nelson Bays and in particular his work with the CACTUS programme. This is a programme that runs outside of work hours and involves a number of staff on each course mentoring a group of teenagers on a fitness training programme. Three mornings a week they meet at 6am and go through a rigorous physical training programme. Once the work is done the officers and helpers cook the kids a hearty breakfast and they go off to school for the day. The work Charlie does here goes well beyond the call of duty, but it also makes a significant difference to the lives of the young people. Detective Ruth Collins received an Area Commander's Commendation for her work on the homicide investigation into the death of Richmond woman Sharyn Wilkinson-Foley. Constable James Matthews received the District Commander's Certificate of Appreciation for the part he played in the Wairarapa Ballooning tragedy. Constable Matthews was working for Police in the Wairarapa at the time. Constable Mike McDougall of Murchison received a District Commander's Commendation for his quick thinking actions to save the driver of a logging truck which crashed into the Buller River on 22 May. Senior Sergeant David Gibson received the District Commander's Commendation for the work he did recovering bodies from the CTV building after the February 2011 Canterbury earthquake. Senior Sergeant Gibson was part of a team from Nelson Bays who worked throughout the night recovering survivors and the bodies of the deceased. This week I have also had the privilege of attending the presentation of Royal Humane Society of New Zealand bravery awards to the men involved in rescuing people from a crashed car. Kyle Paki Paki and Philip Walker received Bronze Medals at the ceremony for their part in pulling Filemoni Fa'avae and Ali Fa'avae from the submerged vehicle, along with the body of Janice Fa'avae. When I reflect on what all of these people have done I genuinely feel proud of this community. Some of those named above are trained professionals going about their work, but others are members of the public who happened to be on the spot. No matter who they are, these people all did the right thing at the right time to help another person and they are all heroes in my mind.

The lazy river and wave pool may look like they’re just for the kids, but they can be a great form of exercise if you walk or swim against it for resistance. There’s also a pool for the aquatic centre’s littlest swimmers and is perfect for those just learning to love the water. The adjoining Fitness Centre was officially opened in June 2011 and is another reason why the ASB Aquatic and Fit-
ness Centre is such a great asset for the community. The centre offers Les Mills group fitness classes, fitness assessments and personalised programmes to help you burn some calories, gain some muscle and get the lifestyle and look you want. It’s fitted out with state of the art gym equipment along with some great staff. The fact they have won fitness centre of the year just proves they’re the team to call on when you want results. The fitness centre are also experienced in dealing with the rehabilitation of people after injuries, health related issues and have worked with some of the region’s elite level athletes.
Their learn to swim pool was the first addition after their opening and is a custom built pool that changes depth width withe, allowing the children to do their thing from the safety of shallower water while others can swim full lengths on the other side. There aren’t many pools like it in the country and the aquatic centre are proud to be part of the first steps for many people as they learn to swim; not just children, but any age who are willing to learn. Alongside the Swim Magic learn to swim lessons, the aquatic centre also cater to the more serious swimmer, with adult swimming squads that focus on technique and

fitness and a hugely successful swim coach program for those looking to compete, plus the pools are always open for personal use any time you feel like working on your butterfly! If your togs are looking a little worse for wear then take advantage of the centre’s shop, which stocks the best brands to stand the test of time against the chlorine and caters for everyone, young and old. The shop team will also help you find the best product to suit your body and the aquatic activities you’ll be taking part in.
The ASB Aquatic and Fitness Centre is a great community asset, because as well as enjoying a team of staff who make it the fantastic and friendly place it is, it offers no restrictions to its uses. “We can cater to pretty much anyone, whether it’s a rehabilitation thing, whether it’s relaxation, fitness, whether it’s a combination, whether it’s a meeting place for a coffee from the Poolside Cafe. I think that’s the coolest thing about it, there’s no limitation to what you can do within the building, it can be high intensity or low intensity, or

Aquatic and Fitness Centre and enjoy it for yourself. The families and individuals, who made significant contributions in time and money to realise the dream of having, not just another swimming pool, but an aquatic complex meeting the wider needs of the region, should be proud.

Swimmer off to Qatar training camp Garin College swimmer Thomas Heaton will benefit from some leading edge tuition and get the chance to see the world's fastest swimmers in action at an elite youth coaching programme in Qatar later this year. Thomas, 15, is one of two swimmers selected to represent New Zealand at the International Federation of Swimming Associations (FINA) Youth Programme in Doha, from December 3 to 7. One male and one female swimmer, aged 14 to 16, from each FINA country will attend the programme, which is designed to inspire talented young swimmers and expose them to the latest training techniques - about 350 swimmers are expected to attend. "I'm really excited about it," Thomas says. "It will be great fun and it would be great to see some world record swims go down. "I'm also looking forward to seeing what other coaching ideas and philosophies are out there. It will be all the latest stuff." Thomas was selected for the programme after gaining the highest FINA points for males in this age group at the national age group competition held in April and May. He won the 1500 metre freestyle, finished second in the 400m freestyle and was fourth in the 800m freestyle events at this meet and qualified to compete in six other events. Tasman Magic Academy coach Andy Adair says it will be a great

opportunity for Thomas, who has trained hard all season. Andy says Thomas moved from Dunedin to Nelson to further his swimming career and his selection is recognition of his commitment and hard work. "It is very exciting that Swim New Zealand can now offer this all-expenses-paid international training camp as part of its development pathway for our young swimmers," Andy says. Thomas will need to pay for his New Zealand uniform, travel insurance and have spending money but everything else is paid for including attendance at the FINA world championships finals. "The Tasman Swim Club are thrilled that Thomas has been given this tremendous honour to share with other top swimmers from around the world. Undoubtedly this will inspire other swimmers from the club and region, as they learn and hear about this incredible opportunity," Andy says. But this week Thomas and his Tasman clubmates were focused on the national short course champs in Wellington. Thomas was competing in all the freestyle distances, including his specialist 400 metre and 1500 metre as well as the 400 metre individual medley.

Netball's top grades Fishing Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club heat up for semis with
Saxton Stadium will host Nelson Netball semi-finals on Sunday. All grades, excluding Premier 1, will see 1 v 4 and 2 v 3, with the winners playing in the final the following Saturday. Premier 1 will play minor semi-finals with the first and second seeds playing off. The winner gets the direct route to the final while the loser plays the winner of the 3 v 4 semi. The two semis will see a repeat of last week’s final round robin game. Top seed Richmond (17 points) will meet defending champion Jacks OPD (14 points), while Stoke NBS (13 points) will do battle with Prices Pharmacy A (12 points) The slate has been wiped clean and while Jacks won the first and third round, there is definitely no favourite going into the game. It would be fair to say that Richmond have had the more consistent season, however results to date do not count for anything when it comes to semis. Last Thursday’s game was worthy of “final status”, as first Richmond and then Jacks dominated. There were ebbs and flows as both teams would get on a “mini roll”. Both teams created the turnover ball however, the conversion rate was not high for either team. While there was no real stand-

out player, wing defence Ella Marwick would have been the toast of her team mates, as she pulled in a crucial intercept in the dying seconds which was duly delivered to Ani Waitai to convert. While Jacks were jubilant as the win promoted them to second seed, Richmond were “gutted” with the loss. Sunday’s semi-finals are expected to be hard fought and could quite possibly go right to the wire. While Richmond have had a reasonably consistent season they know to come out on the right side of the ledger they must put out a consistent four quarters. They need to protect the ball and finish off by putting the ball through the hoop. Goal shoot, Kathleen Thornalley put in a strong performance last week when she was industrious on the outside of the circle and presented well inside. She and Nicky Rampton will have to increase their accuracy on Sunday as they actually had seven more attempts than Jacks last week. Coach Amanda Springer believes if her charges can stick to their game plan for the entire game they “can do it” however
she concedes it will be a tight game. Jacks, by their own admission, have played some “pretty average” netball this season. However, they know only too well what they have to do on Sunday. Jacks rely on their through court defence while their trump card is their ability to safely deliver the ball to the reliable goal shoot. Ani Waitai. Prices defeated Stoke NBS in the first round however Stoke turned the tables in the next two encounters. Stoke NBS coach, Abbie Cook, believes it is anyone’s game. While teams are used to playing in the evening it will be an adjustment to play at 9am on a Sunday. Stoke’s strength has been how the players have come together to play as a unit. Individually they are doing their job, and collectively they have achieved. The defence have toiled to win ball while the attacks have finished it off. Stoke will be looking at keeping their error rate down, and working on one quarter at a time. Prices coach, Mandy Whiting, has a full roster available on Sunday and says the onus is on the girls themselves. And, like Stoke, she believes a team effort and not an individual one will pay dividends on the day.
