Mayors take on mo challenge
Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio has lost out to his Tasman counterpart Richard Kempthorne by a hair, actually by several dozen hairs. The two leaders decided to take up the Movember challenge to grow a mo to help raise awareness and money for men’s health. Aldo conceeded defeat just before the end of the month. “He has more volume, but I have more style,” joked Aldo. “Richard won fair and square though, he is a very hairy man.” Movember New Zealand collaborates with two men’s health partners – the Cancer Society and the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand. “This is a really important issue” says Richard. “I don’t really enjoy wearing a moustache, but it’s for a really good cause.” Aldo says he was right in behind the idea as well. “I really want to support education around men’s health so I thought I’d give it a go.” His wife Kim has been supportive of the mo he says, but did not enjoy jokes about growing it until the end of the year. “I wanted to keep going until the end of the year to pass Richard but she was having none of it,” he laughs. The mayor’s say they are looking forward to tomorrow [Wednesday] morning then they will be able to Nelson city mayor Aldo Miccio holds the mirror for his Tasman counterpart, Richard Kempthorne, as Movember shave their mo’s and return their clean cut look. comes to a close today. University does U-turn, campus to stay Andrew Board
Principals are celebrating a U-turn by University of Canterbury officials after they announced that its Nelson campus will not close. Nelson Weekly broke the story late last month that the University was proposing to close the teachers college because of a government cap on funding for students.
But on Friday, University of Canterbury’s College of Education announced that it will not be closing its Nelson campus and will continue to deliver primary teacher education in the region. The decision follows a period of consultation with staff, students, primary school principals and other interested groups.
“
I’m thrilled, I’m really thrilled. – Don McLean, chair of the Nelson Principals’ Federation.
Chair of the Nelson Principals’ Federation, Don McLean, who earlier said the closure would be a massive blow to Nelson primary schools, was thrilled with the news. “I’m rapt, it’s a composite course, so not full on face-to-face like we wanted but it is certainly better than just doing the flexible learn-
ing options. They can come in each week, touch base with someone and discuss their issues and their problems. I’m thrilled, I’m really thrilled.” Don says support for the campus was one of the major reasons it is staying, including support from the Continued on page 2.

I was impressed with both of them and the University certainly knew they had our back.” The new blended programme will not be accepting an intake in 2011, but will continue to teach those already in the programme and will
accept another intake of students in 2012. Professor Gail Gillon says the proposal to close the campus was driven by a cap on government funding. However, following the consultation period and hearing very clear views as to the importance of retaining some face-to-face component in primary teacher education in the Nelson region, an alternative model will be implemented she says.
• Nelson City Council is launching a campaign aimed at parents of teenagers, asking them to think twice before supplying their children with alcohol. While it is legal for a parent or guardian to supply alcohol to their child, NCC says it may not be the wisest choice. The campaign is aimed at encouraging parents to think harder about the consequences when they supply alcohol to their kids. • It will soon be a sea of silver on Nelson streets, as hundreds of motorcyclists take to the roads of Nelson on Saturday 4 December for the annual Ulysses Nelson Toy Run. Celebrating its 25th year of collection, motorcyclists from all over the top of the south are being asked to decorate themselves and machines in silver to mark the silver jubilee of the Toy Run. Riders will assemble at Papps car park in Cambridge St at 10am. The motorcycles will make their way into Nelson from Richmond’s town centre, through Stoke and down Trafalgar St, ending at the car park of the Trafalgar Centre.

Nelson firefighters after more mates Ever wanted to be a firefighter? Well there is no better time than now, say members of the Nelson volunteer fire brigade. Nelson city’s volunteer firefighters have watched their numbers dwindle to just five this year, and one of those guys is being relocated to the West Coast shortly. So they are calling on any interested people to come along and join the brigade. Any age or gender is welcome, but a great attitude is needed says station officer Lance Williams. “You do need to be physically fit and able to give up a couple of hours for training each Sunday night and obviously when there is a call out you may be needed.” The volunteer brigade is based in the same station as the region’s professionals and because of that are “third cab of the rank” in the event of fire.
“We don’t get the call outs some of the other volunteer brigades get but when we do it’s usually for something big,” says another station officer Kegan Hodge. In return for giving up a few hours of time each week, volunteers get extensive training, including first aid and a great camaraderie says Kegan. “We are a tight-knit group so get along well and really enjoy ourselves.” The brigade usually has around a dozen members, but because of several people relocating out of Nelson and other family commitments, several have quit the Nelson post. “It’s a great team to be a part of and you learn some great skills,” says Kegan. Anyone interested in joining the brigade can call the Nelson office and leave their contact details, the number is 546 2100.

Victory’s good neighbour a good keen man In a blind panic, after watching her two year old daughter fall off the sofa and lay unconscious, Victory’s Falesha Stocker then got the kind of support from her neighbour that saw him win the community’s good neighbour of the year. “Duncan just put us in the car and rushed us off to A&E, no hesitation. He said when we first moved in ‘if there’s anything you ever need give me a call’ and I’ve been doing that ever since,” she says. That incident – along with muffin making, seedling sharing, weeding and other odd and ends – saw Duncan Davidson win the award for Victory, one of four communities that had a winner at the inaugural Good Neighbour of the Year awards, organised by Neighbourhood Support. Falesha nominated her friendly neighbour after reading an article in Nelson Weekly about the awards, she says she knew straight away that Duncan deserved a nomination. “He’s just a really wonderful neighbour and really keen to support the community and anything that’s going on and is always looking out for people. It’s really neat to be living next to someone who is so enthusiastic.” Duncan was rather humbled by the nomination and subsequent award and says the community is a pleasure to live in. “There are a lot of good people living in the neighbourhood. I think in some ways this part of town it’s not the wealthiest or more lush part of town and for that reason people can’t really take it for granted.

of great people in Victory that have done far more for their neighbours than me, I appreciate being nominated, but I think next year we will have a few more great neighbours nominated.” Duncan’s story is the last of the Good Neighbour of the Year series after Nelson Weekly profiled winners Bill Higgins in Tahunanui, John Glennie in Stoke, the Commune in Nelson city and Duncan’s win in Victory. Organiser of the awards, Kim MacDonald, says they have been a huge success and she is looking foward to next year.

He says he enjoys being a good neighbour and reckons next years awards will be even bigger. “I think the awards are great and next year I’d like to think there will be a lot more nominations, not just in Victory, but across the city. Trees of Remembrance set to grow again Stars to remember loved ones will adjourn Christmas Trees of Remembrance around Nelson next month and Nelson Hospice is looking for some volunteers to help man the trees As the hectic festive season rushes towards us, these trees offer an opportunity to support the local hospice and to also remember and honour a loved one who is no longer there to share Christmas with family and friends, says organiser Shirley Dunne. The trees will be in Nelson, Stoke, Richmond and Motueka from December 15 to 22. Any community groups, clubs, friends or individuals who feel they can help in any way should contact Shirley on 548 0359 or Sandy on 546 3923 for further details.

Founders gears up for first ever Toy Fair If the success of the Founders Book Fair is anything to go by the Founders Toy Fair will be the next big Nelson event to mark on your calendar. The first ever toy fair is being held this Saturday, immediately after the Nelson Santa Parade.
Shirley Dunne is looking for more volunteers to help man trees of remembrance in Nelson and Stoke from mid December.
It is being organised by the Stoke/Tahunanui Rotary and Founders Heritage Park, a Nelson City Council facility. Hundreds of toys have already been donated for the fair although organisers are hoping for a last minute surge in donated toys, which can be dropped off
at any Summit office, in Nelson, Stoke, Richmond or Motueka, at Founders or they can be picked up by calling Barry on 547 6366. Proceeds from the fair will be split down the middle to Founders and Stoke/Tahunanui Rotary.

Stoke students fish out pest Levi Pohutuhutu’s fish may not have been the biggest around but it is probably the most important the 10 year-old has caught. Levi caught an introduced tench, or doctor fish more commonly known as carp, in Orphanage Creek, near Suffolk Rd last week. He was there as part of a school field trip organised by the Waimaori Streamcare Programme, which is funded by Department of Conservation, Nelson City and Tasman District Councils. Programme coordinator Melanie McColgan, says the fish was introduced to the stream and can severely reduce the numbers of trout, white-
bait and native fish populations through predication of young and eggs and through competition of food. They can also reduce water quality as their feeding habits stir up large amounts of mud and sediment leading to a decline in freshwater quality and in extreme cases may increase bank erosion. She says it’s important people realise that putting these fish in our waterways can have a massive impact. “It’s terrible for our native fish and although it’s a concern every time we see one, it’s great to get it out of the streams.” Levi says he was stoked to catch the fish and was glad he was helping to keep the stream healthy.

Letters to the editor
William picks up another award as highlights stack up At 13, pianist William Fairbairn already has a list of achievements to plaster the walls of his makeshift studio at the family’s Stoke home. But he says he has only just begun in his quest to “shock the world”. William began composing at age four and has been playing gigs since he was seven. Recently he added another award to his wall when he was named a finalist in the Corporate Events peoples choice section of entertainer of the year. And he isn’t about to slow down, gearing up to play at various Nelson events throughout the summer. Last week he met “Shine” pianist David Helfgott and earlier this year he met Sir Cliff Richard when he played his Christchurch concert and says he would like a similar career where he can travel the world. “I would like to have a career in music and make people happy. That’s my ultimate goal, like Michael Jackson.” William is home schooled which allows him practice and compose during the day with a few hours of school work in the afternoon. He says this allows him to fully work on his “gift”. While he misses his friends at school he is happy working in his studio, a room below the family lounge perfecting his songs. This summer, William has shows planned around the city including Nelson Airport while the Woollaston Jazzfest is at its height. He will also perform at the Santa Parade in Nelson this weekend. William’s parents say the dedication their son shows is second to none although it does make the house “quite rowdy”. William is currently working several pieces and is hoping to get his tribute to the Mt Erebus disaster made into film.
Dear Sir, Firstly, I would like to thank the team at Nelson Weekly for their great stories over the last month about the Good Neighbours Awards. They have profiled each of the four winners which have really shown the heart behind the awards. We hope to run these awards yearly. If anyone would like to get connected with their neighbourhood they can start a new Neighbourhood Support group with my help or join an existing group. For more information phone or email the office on 546 4902 or nsupport@xtra.co.nz, Kim MacDonald, Neighbourhood Support Nelson Coordinator. Sir, In Nelson Weekly letters to the editor (Nov.23), the Nelson council CEO states that council’s noise plan change 25.2 involves only two words. Yet this change proposes the separate deletion of three entire sections of the plan, and as such goes way beyond any simple technical fix. The proposed removal of three entire plan sections, shifts this proposal to being a significant plan change, not a technical fix. In my view, deletion of those three sections will have the potential to remove consideration of noise as a serious pollutant to amenity values of areas. That sort of change needs to be subjected to a full and public plan change process, with an independent commissioner rather than councillors at the hearing. Dan McGuire, Nelson. Stoke pianist William Fairbairn, 13, in his studio at his family home. William was a recent national finalist for Corporate Events.
Letter to this section may be emailed to editorial@ nelsonweekly.co.nz.

• A reasonable week for the port with 2 log ships, 4 container vessels, 1 tanker, 6 major fishing vessels and several smaller ones taking advantage of the spring tides. The Monte Stello continued her regular trip from Wellington. • It was a busy weekend for the Harbour Master vessel with several errant speeding boats spoken to. For clarity, when entering the marina entrance area, please slow down to 5 knots at the new vertical red and white striped safe water mark. When exiting please use this same beacon as a place to speed up from. • Congrats to the Waka-thon Organisers – I was fortunate enough to witness a few races and would certainly like to encourage the event on an annual basis. I saw several well equipped waka and occupants enjoying their paddle around the islands and the port. I hope the day was a success for you. • Congratulations and thanks also to the many and varied groups that participated in the clean up around the port. It was a pleasure to provide transport for some and witness the remarkable results when the day was over. A big thank you to all. Safe Boating. Remember – If in doubt, don’t go out. Mufti day gets Nayland teachers uniformed Art students may be forgiven for thinking they had stepped in to a hospital at Nayland College on Friday. It was mufti day for the junior students, so teachers decided they should take it one level higher and dress up before their staff party. “There were plenty of blank looks on student’s faces,” says teacher Stacey McMurtrie. Name tags with creepy names made these doctors seem like the kind you would not want operating on you. Diana Maskill was now known as Die Mass-Kill, Stacey McMurtrie went for McMurdery, and even the friendly Mike
Friend became Mike Friendless. Tania Radman went for the more cultural change to Taniakoe Radicool. The majority of the teachers were dressed up, though not all of them looked like the cast of Shortland Street. Dominos, high profile accountants, football players, even the pope made a cameo appearance at the school. “It is not every day the pope gets to teach you science,” commented one student. With the senior school, who have finished for the year, already in mufti, days like this provide more character and a bit of fun. It was Art teachers Diana Maskill, Mike Friend, Stacey McMurtrie and Tania Radman, or less commonly not long ago the seniors came to known as Die Mass-Kill, Mike Friendless, Stacey McMurdery and Tania Radicool dressed as doctors school dressed in uniform. at Nayland College. Fashion show raises $18K For the third year running Nelson fashion stores have helped raise thousands for Hospice with this year’s show bringing in more than $18,000. Organised by Jay’s on Bridge, Foxy Lady, Shine, Taylors, Gustaves, Cardells Hair with makeup done by Kate Donaldson, the infashion@The Boathouse show was once again a huge success they say. The fashion show charged $75 entry, which included nibbles, a glass of wine and a goodie bag. Karen Jordan of Jay’s says the show was a stunning success and people have already started to book their table for next year. “It went really, really smoothly, it was full on organising it but we have had so much positive feedback. It’s a sell out every year because it’s such a great show and for such a great cause.”

Those were the days, the days of the matinee
A group of local kids enjoying a movie matinee.
Contributed by Alan Turley It was the immediate post war years and Saturday matinees were all the rage with our generation of kids. Whether it was Chums Club, Young New Zealanders Club, local competitions society, Seddon Shield rugby matches at Trafalgar Park, Norton Cup hockey matches at the Botanics, a visiting circus or touring show at the Theatre Royal; there was always something for us kids to look forward to at the weekend. It was the days before television and computer games, and the Nelson scene was probably the same as any other town in New Zealand. The highlight as far as I was concerned was the Chums Club on a Saturday morning, when up to eight hundred kids would pack the State Theatre. Admission was sixpence and membership of the Chums Club was free. Membership entitled you to a free Chums Club badge, an attendance card which gave the bearer a free admission after receiving twelve attendance clips, and on your birthday, members were invited up onto the stage where they each received a chocolate fish from compere Uncle Tom and we all sang happy birthday. The programme usually consisted of an episode of a twelve part western serial (eg Tom Mix, Bill Maynard and Hopalong Cassidy were firm favourites), followed by a couple of Disney cartoons and a short comedy feature. The main feature was usually a western, a pirate or adventure movie, Tarzan, or a classic, such as Snow White - all good stuff. Along the road at the rival Majestic Theatre, the Young New Zealanders Club provided a similar fare on a Saturday afternoon. It struggled and the Chums Club always enjoyed the greater patronage in Nelson. One of the activities that was possibly unique to Nelson was the Wednesday after school movie programme conducted by

Rev Ray Blampied at the Rutherford St Church of Christ. Admission was free and consequently it was immensely popular, drawing kids from all the primary schools in Nelson. It was a scene of considerable bedlam with over five hundred kids crammed into the small church hall, roaring their heads off at the crazy antics of comics like; the Keystone Cops, Fatty Arbuckle, Laurel and Hardy, Abbot and Costello. Some of the movies were old silent comedies, but that didn’t matter, it was a great show. One thing was standard, the baddie was always identified by the fact that he had a big black moustache. Perhaps my most vivid memory was the visit of country and western star, Tex Morton with hypnotist the Great Franquin at the Theatre Royal. It was 1949 and since Nelson was Tex Morton’s home town, the price of admission had been specially reduced from one shilling to sixpence. Of course what we didn’t know was that the Great Franquin was nothing more than a protege of Tex Morton, that his name was Frank Quinn and that he came from Picton. What you don’t know does not hurt you and it as it turned out, it did not matter anyhow. As we queued to get in, word came down the line that the Great Franquin was sick and that Tex Morton was going to do the whole show by himself. As a result the admission had been further reduced to only three pence. The whole show was a one-man performance. It was an afternoon of sheer enjoyment. Tex Morton went on to become the world’s greatest hypnotist and the world’s greatest entertainer, breaking all box office records in the United States and Canada. By the mid 1950’s television was beginning to take hold and the matinee era was in decline. I have often wondered what happened to the matinees that we all enjoyed so much. Where did they go? Why did they disappear?

Run Mahana draws 900 runners
Lachlan Parker, 3, hits the ball during the game of Peanut League Tee-ball at Saxton Field on Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Tee-ball gets a whack thanks to Peanut League Children three and four years old are learning Tee-ball skills the fun way in the Peanut League at Saxton Field. At 9:15 on a Saturday morning kids meet organiser Julie Brockie for fun activities designed to help their development through to softball. Jumping on bases pretending there is a banana underneath that needs a good squashing helps children learn that they must step on the base when running between them. Chicken wing arms when you bat, and stand like a gorilla when you field so you’re ready for the ball. Other drills include an obstacle course around the diamond. After all the drills are done, they play a game at the end.
And it’s all wrapped up by 9:50am. Julie is a preschool teacher and started the Peanut League because she likes being active and involved with children. “I’d like to see the confidence in the children grow,” she says. Julie also plays softball herself. New entrance teachers have mentioned to Julie that they have seen huge confidence from kids in physical education thanks to the Peanut League. The last Peanut League session is this weekend before starting up again in February. If you would like your child to join, you can call Julie on 548 6425. Cost is just a gold coin donation before each session. Children must be three or four years old.
Congratulations!

Ross Butler has taken the reins as chair of the governing body for the sport in Nelson from Ian Patterson, while James McPhie and Euan Brownlee have come onto the nine-person board. NBF general manager Clive Beaumont says the sport is extremely healthy in Nelson and is pleased to see two new faces around the table. “It’s always good to have people with appropriate skills to give their time to the sport and these two have that. We are in an exciting time for the sport at the moment and I look forward to continuing to work with the board.” SAxToN FiElD Good news has followed closely on the heels of Nelson City Council’s recent decision to proceed with the planned construction of the Cricket, Athletics and Football Pavilion at Saxton Field. $400,000 of Lottery Community Facilities Funding has been confirmed towards the $3.8 million construction costs of the new cricket, athletics and football facility. The facility has a fixed cost of $3.8 million. The build is likely to take six months, with the facility being open by September 2011. SporTS AwArDS Lawn bowler Val Smith is the region’s sportsperson of the year. She was annoucned as the winner of the prestigious award at the New Zealand Community Trust Nelson Sportsperson of the Year Awards last Friday night. It is the second time she has won the award. Multisport star Richard Ussher won the Golden Edge Sportsperson of the Year. rUgbY Another promising rugby player has confirmed his allegiance to the Tasman Rugby Union. Mitchell Thwaites has signed a contract with the Tasman Rugby Union for 2011. Mitchell’s agent Shane Drummond was pleased Mitchell had committed to Tasman as he had been offered an opportunity in another province. Mitchell has been a member of the Tasman Rugby Union Port Nelson Rugby Academy.

Yet again Brendon Barnett and Craig Lautenslager thrilled the crowd at the Saxton Field athletics track, this time at the revamped Hester Shield Classic. While the main event occurred earlier in the evening, Brendon and Craig’s spectacular rise in the local athletics scene throughout 2010 has been confirmed. Craig beat Ewoud Noordeloos in the blue ribbon event, the 1500m. Ewoud set the pace early, but it was Craig who had the lead coming around the final bend and was too far ahead from his training partner winning in 4 minutes 22.47 seconds. While Brendon was jumping IAAF World Youth Athletics Championship qualifying distances, he could not perfect his run up and jumped three no jumps well over 7 meters. So unfortunately for the 16 year-old Stoke star, he had to settle 6.74m. But his coach Brodie Hewlett believes he will soon be the complete package and consistently jumping personal bests. “He’s been working a lot of different things. His run up, his take off and his flight. Once he puts that all together I’m pretty confident he’ll jump over seven meters,” he says. Nelson’s Alex Jordan versus Christchurch’s Tim Jones was the dream match-up going in to the classic. The country’s leading age-group 400m and 200m runners squaring off. Alex got early bragging rights winning the 200m, finished the race in the country’s second fastest time of the season in 21.50 seconds. But Tim got his revenge in the 100m taking out the sprint in 10.90sec, .04 ahead of Alex. Hazel Bowering-Scott was running against the clock, with only one other athlete in her 400m race. Hazel was always going to win, and clocked in at 57.36 seconds. Other Nelson athletes to win were Emma Dallison won the women’s 800m in 2min36.50sec, Dale Pritchard took out the shot put/discus double with impressive distances of 41.83m and 13.42m, and in javelin Chris Line threw 50.01m to win. Nayland College’s Mitchell Chandler, Jonas Kale, Thomas McGhee and Adam Pauling got some decent competition before they head away to Hastings for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Championship. All four year nine students will be part of a 4x100m relay hoping to reach the final of the junior boys grade. Thomas finished second in the Men’s 16 200m with a time of 25.43sec.
New colours take off at Tahunanui school Phillip Rollo The introduction of house colours made for a more competitive atmosphere at the Tahunanui Primary School athletics day. Moana, Ra, Tatahi and Whenua battled it out for athletics supremacy, and the valuable four points to add to their inter-house trophy tally. While the individual performances were top notch, sports coordinator Aidan Barnett was impressed by the way students worked as a team. And were always keen on checking the scoreboard between events. “There was a lot of camaraderie out there. It was a fantastic day, the sun was shining,” he says. Students are designated a house when they first enroll at Tahunaui. There was only a few points separating each house going in to the final event of the day, the relays, which were worth double points for each house. But it was Tatahi who came out on top in the end, finishing the day on 256 points, eight clear of Ra. Once the serious stuff concluded, students were treated to another relay, where the best of the best took on the staff and parents. With the parents dropping the baton in the final 200m, the students came out on top. “It felt really great. It’s great to beat people older than you,” says Jacob Lovell, 11, who ran the anchor leg for the students. Aidan cannot wait for next year, but says the relay was very exhausting. “I’ve blown my thigh away trying to keep up with the kids.”
