Tasman District Council has given the go-ahead to clear the slip blocking Stafford Drive with work to begin within the next four weeks.
Access to the section of road, which provides a main thoroughfare connecting Mapua, Ruby Bay and Tasman Village, has been closed since a major slip brought a large amount of material across the road during the August 2022 weather event.
The situation prompted safety concerns around the stability of the cliff face above.

Council staff have spent the last three months undertaking investigations and consulting geotechnical experts in order to gather the best information and advice in the decision-making process.

“The slip occurred in August 2022. It is now three months later and the road remains closed – with summer almost upon us and the likelihood of more traffic on our region’s roads, extending this time any further is not tenable and we need to make a decision.”

Many groups and organisations are collecting and distributing food in Motueka. So many groups that it may be confusing for potential food donors, and those in need of food, to know where to go. To coordinate all this good work, the groups have got together to share information and to try to provide an umbrella organisation to streamline collection and distribution.
The Council is currently working alongside contractors to confirm a start date for the clearance.
Despite the plentiful supply of fruit and vegetables over summer, the coming months can be a very stressful time

Students had the chance to improve their independent adventure skills on recent Adventure Skills Development Programmes run by Whenua Iti Outdoors in the October school holidays. The courses provided the opportunity for students to gain L3 NCEA credits while adventuring through some of our favourite local wilderness locations.
Participants from schools around the region, including Motueka High School, attended the 9 day programme that was free to attend for local students thanks to funding provided by the Top of the South Trades Academy through the Ministry of Education to help students access programmes that offer NCEA credits and support their educational achievement.
The groups challenged themselves throughout the programme while working towards 15 Level 3 NCEA credits. One group of students completed an amazing 66km journey kayak-
ing the Abel Tasman coastline and looping back to Marahau hiking the inland track, circling the Abel Tasman National Park and experiencing it from both land and sea. Beyond the obvious Abel Tasman wonders of amazing views and encounters with wildlife in their natural habitat, the key highlights for Whenua Iti instructors were the positive attitudes from
students as they faced various challenges.
They continued to play fun trail games and exude positive energy resulting in plenty of laughs while also battling tears, blisters, and achy muscles to go with their incredible achievements as a supportive team. They have many stories and magical moments to take home as trophies for their efforts, and a lasting confidence in
what they can achieve with a positive mindset.
“It’s always a highlight for me, to see these kids challenge themselves in the outdoors, and see the personal growth that comes as the reward for that challenge,” says Gilby, one of the Senior Instructors on the programme. “The credits are a bonus, but the real take away for these kids is find-
ing out what they’re capable of, gaining confidence and learning how to work as a team.”
Whenua Iti are running this programme again in the summer, along with a host of holiday programmes for local tamariki starting from ages 7 and up.
To see what they have available you can visit their website: www.wio.org.nz
Wear your most comfortable shoes to view a diverse range of art and media beside the sea.
Follow the yellow bunting to 15 art hubs on Motueka’s coastal Trewavas Street from 10am to 3pm this Saturday, 3 December.
Now in its seventh year, Trewavas Street Art Walk showcases emerging and existing artists from Motueka and surrounding areas, in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
“You’ll find weaving, felting, painting, ceramics/pottery, glasswork, metal work, photography, clothing and much more,” says organiser Abby Butler.
“The community is invited to browse and buy Christmas presents – maybe artistic or just plain quirky! Pop in to one of the houses marked with the yellow bunting, grab yourself a map and get exploring,” she says.
“Thanks to the homeowners who
kindly allow artists to exhibit work on their properties. In these trying times it’s a feelgood factor to support locally produced work,” says Abby.
“It’s a great day out with a friendly atmosphere at a great location - close to the saltwater baths, café, estuary walks and the foreshore. There will be people, bikes and dogs at 15 art hubs up and down Trewavas Street.”
Motueka ceramicist Lizzie Yockney enjoys the social aspect of the art walk: “It’s always good to see a smile on someone’s face when checking out my whimsical work...”
Thanks to the TDC Creative Communities for their grant supporting this event.

Jaime Howell has been working to empower men for decades. First developing health and wellbeing programs for boys at Motueka High School, later as a director for the Rites of Passage Foundation in Golden Bay, a charitable trust that helps families support the transition of boys to young men. He is a member of the Motueka Men’s group. Jaime values the work of talking circles and heart sharing spaces where men show up and be true with themselves. He says, “It is a lot cheaper than counselling and the bonds the men establish over time are strong and supportive, I am a great believer in ordinary, sometimes hard earned wisdom”.
Alongside Victor Santos and Gary Smith, he is inviting men of all ages and interests to show up and contribute to the building of a community of healthy men. The workshop series is called moMENtum and the next edition is happening on Saturday, 10 December 2022.
“My personal journey to manhood means coming to terms with the fact I have a strong ego self, it causes mischief and resists change. I have been prone to moods that frequently spoil a capacity for love. Mostly this lives in hiding, it is good at presenting reasons why not take a courageous step.”
Jaime has been creating transformational events that help men to become whole, to integrate the fragmented parts of themselves, childhood wounds, fathers battles, fear of expressing feelings.
“Our vision is to support men to be whole, something not perfect but able to stand up, show up, especially at this time of growth where women are discovering their voices and leadership. I think it is a good time for men to grow the gift of healthy masculinity in service to this good earth and community. A willingness to be vulnerable, while being held in a community is a key to this work. The
best fruit lives on the edges and we can get there together.”
One of the pathways to this transformation is through moving the body. “When we loosen the body we can loosen all the unhelpful and ingrained habits of the mind.”
Jaime believes that all our ancestors knew the healing power of movement.
Movement, mythological stories, spaces to open up around taboos of conscious sexuality, power and money. This is what MoMENtum is about.
The second MoMENtum event is Saturday, 10 December 2022 at the Lower Moutere Memorial Hall from 10-5pm.
You can expect a friendly group of men of all walks of life.
“We are imagining/ hoping men coming together who can then in time model healthy masculinity for younger men, the generations to come.”
Victor Santos has done decades of work around healing the body, he is a gifted
facilitator and mature listener who can hold space for trauma.
Gary Smith is a father of two beautiful teenage boys, an energy/body worker
and event manager who specialises in supporting local communities to thrive.
The three of them together are building a series of events in
the region, planned to date is the December 10 workshop, then the February 11 workshop and finally a 5-day residential retreat in Golden Bay starting on April, 29
in 2023. Visit https://www. facebook.com/momentumnewzealand for more info here about the event and the men offering it.

Te Aratoi o Whakatu is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Kyla Mackenzie to the role of Curator and Collections Manager.
Debi Jones and her family are desperate for the safe return of their two beloved purebred Staffordshire Bull Terriers (Staffies).
Rosie an 8-yearold brindle and white, together with River a 2.5 year-old grey and white escaped from
Debi’s heavily fortified Riwaka property on Friday, 4 November and were last sighted on the Riwaka/ Kaiteriteri Estuary.
Despite an extensive social media campaign and countless hours of searching the dogs are yet to be found. Hours have been spent combing
the beaches and nearby properties with Debi also turning to psychics for assistance.
Recently sightings of the dogs have been made in Golden Bay so hope is high for the family to be reunited.
“These girls are part of our family and we’re desperate to get them home,” says Debi.
“I know they’ll be missing us as much as we’re missing them.”
Any information is welcomed and the public is urged to keep an eye out. Please contact Debi 0273322701 with any information, which will be gratefully received.
Kyla, who has a doctorate in art history, has a wide range of experience, including extensive writing on New Zealand art both contemporary and historical, work in public galleries, and the recent delivery of a teaching programme of art history at the University of Auckland.
She replaces Sarah McClintock who has now taken her post as Director of Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History in Masterton.
Director of The Suter Art Gallery Julie Catchpole is excited about Kyla joining the team.
“Kyla brings enthusiasm for a wide variety of art forms,” she says. “Her wealth of knowledge of New Zealand art will sit well with The
Suter’s collection and our exhibitions’ programme”.
Kyla’s written work has appeared in Art New Zealand, The Journal of New Zealand Art History, Grove Art Online, and in various publications, including Richard McWhannell’s survey exhibition that she curated for the Wallace Trust in Auckland.
Prior to her academic work, she held a post in London at Sotheby’s New Bond Street and subsequently worked in a wide range of GLAM
(Galleries, Libraries, and Museums) roles during her post-graduate studies.
Kyla adds, “I’m delighted to be joining the team at The Suter and I look forward to planning future exhibitions, getting to know the gallery’s audiences, engaging with the creative community, and exploring this gorgeous region.” Kyla relocated from Te Tai Tokerau Northland and commenced her role at The Suter Art Gallery on November 9, 2022.

The New Zealand Choral Federation (NZCF) and the Nelson Civic Choir are set to produce their very first combined event, Christmas Messiah Singfest on Sunday, 4 December at 3pm in the NCMA Auditorium.
The Nelson Civic Choir will be leading the choruses with NZCF Choral Director Jason Balla conducting from the piano and City of Dunedin organist David Burchell. Organisers say a special highlight will be listening to five talented local soloist who will be singing selected Arias from Messiah.
All singers are
warmly invited to sing along with the Nelson Civic Choir on their favourite Messiah choruses.
Singers can come on their own or take a group of their choir friends to join in with the fun. Tickets are on sale at the NCMA website and reception ($25 and $15 discount).
There are many Singfest events which take place throughout the year and around the world, and the inaugural Messiah Singfest in December is the first of what organisers hope will become a regular event and aims to bring together any-
one in the region with a love for Handel’s Messiah as either a singer/participant or as an auditor/listener.
Handel’s Messiah continues to delight audiences around the world since it was first performed in 1742 – 280 years later this masterpiece of English Oratorio writing still captivates singers and audiences alike with its biblical drama as well as its messages of hope, healing and humanity – much needed in today’s world, possibly more than ever.
“Having a large body of people collectively inhale and exhale at the same time dur-
ing the physical act of singing can create a wonderful feeling of community, unity, and well-being,” says NZCF Choral Director Jason Balla.
So, head along to the NCMA in Nelson at 3pm on Sunday, 4 December and join in their first Messiah Singfest either as an active singer/participant or as an active listener.
Go and experience being surrounded by a large body of over 100 singers all committing their bodies and voices to singingout-loud in a selection of choruses and arias from Handel’s Messiah.
Once again, Ngatimoti School punched above its weight. This time, it was Bandquest, the National band competition for children up to year 8.
Sugar Rush peaked at the right time, coming 2nd at the recent Top of the South finals at the Regent Theatre in Nelson.
They played two songs including their original ‘Get out of my face’, a tongue in cheek number about the pressures preteens have in their daily lives.
Sugar Rush are Sayla Riley and Ruby Maxwell on vocals, Chico Burger on guitar and Kaisami Beatson on drums. Yuri Quinlivan wrote the music and plays bass.
The judges were impressed by their tightness, speed and stage presence.

Glenn Bathgate says, “This was a classic example of being gifted more time (thanks Nelson floods!) and really making use of
that time”.
A Teacher’s Nuisance (1st time band) also competed gaining valuable stage experience.

Our vegetation team surveys the network regularly, checking for trees and other vegetation that is a risk to the power lines. Before you plant anything near power lines, consider how big it will grow.
We send ‘cut and trim’ (CT) notices to property owners where we nd any trees growing too close to our power lines. We are required to do this by law under the Electricity (Hazard from Trees) Regulations. If you receive a CT notice you can choose to have the trees trimmed or felled. The Regulations state that each tree is entitled to one free trim.
We keep a database of each surveyed site so if you are eligible for a free trim, our tree contractor will cut the tree back to a safe distance from the lines. You are then responsible for keeping the tree trimmed in the future so that it doesn’t grow too close again. Trees noti ed to you in a CT notice must only be cut by a network certi ed arborist. They have speci c training and the necessary insulated tools to safely cut trees close to power lines.
Our vegetation surveyors also look for trees that are a high risk to the power lines – these include trees that are diseased, or have damaged trunks/broken branches that could fall onto the power lines. Owners of these trees will be contacted by our surveyors to discuss their options.
Surveying our power lines and working with tree owners in this way has dramatically reduced the number of power outages caused by trees. We appreciate the e ort that tree owners are making to keep their trees clear of the power lines, your neighbours will too!
If you have any questions please contact our vegetation team on 0800 508 098 or email trees@networktasman.co.nz
remember. It is a competition but the skills gained in the process of practicing and performing give these future music stars a taste of what it takes to succeed. By the sounds of it... rock’n’roll is here to stay!

Amusing and thoughtful sayings on signs add interest to the walls, there’s all kinds of interest dangling from the rafters, from antique teapots to a wooden ladder, highlighted by a selection of timeworn kitchen utensils some of which have been kindly gifted by customers and locals.
It’s a vibrant place and the atmosphere is a tribute to both the owners and staff. Just like the tradies stopping in for smoko, the visiting tourist devouring a mouthwatering late breakfast and the lovely ladies who have settled at a table in the sun to enjoy a coffee and a catch up, we too are welcomed like long lost friends.
Owners Sean and Annie invite us to sit outside and we settle in to learn more about their story. A born and breed kiwi, Sean left for Australia over 20 years ago where he fell in love with Annie. As part of their long term plan they
made the decision to return to New Zealand and open a bakery/café for five years before retiring.
The first time Sean and Annie entered what has become the Mapua Village Bakery, they fell in love with the place and it has since become the heart of the Mapua Community. When the Christchurch earthquakes happened, the bakery became a local meeting place and continues to be so when other noteworthy events occur, such as our recent weather happenings.
It’s a place to find comfort, comradery and community connection. As Covid took a grip on the world and we went into lock down, Sean and Annie took their excess and perishable stock and turned it in to food parcels for those in need as well as their hard working staff. Community members were gifted items such as milk, eggs and delicious family pies, it’s heartening to hear stories of local businesses offering such community support when times are tough.
We learn from Annie that Sean has won many awards for his culinary skills. He has literally won hundreds of awards in Australia, often more than once. Sean’s accolades include Australian Gourmet Pie of the Year, Apple Pie of the Year, Meat Pie of the Year, just to name a few Yes there’s a reason Mapua Bakery and Café is so popular and with their helpful ‘pie tasting notes’ displayed at the counter the only issue you’ll have is choosing which one to bite into first.
Sean reveals one of his secrets to making a good pie is the vegetable shortening used in the pastry alongside a packed filling, that won’t spill out as you eat it. Their pies weigh a hearty 300 grams and taste delicious. Yes they also have family sized pies and quiches, the perfect solution when one is expecting lunch guests or when you need a night off from cooking dinner.
Behind their vast selection of mouthwatering pies is an assortment of freshly baked bread. Here’s a tip, their Ciabatta bread is out of this world. You’ll also find sourdough bread, baguettes and rolls among other choices freshly baked each day.
Our eyes light up as we see the cake cabinet, it’s a sweet tooth’s dream. Traditional long jam cream donuts, neenish tarts, fruit flans, vanilla slices, carrot cake, pecan
pies, apple slice and so much more lay in wait, tempting us at every glance.
If you are looking for a celebration cake or a special dessert the Mapua Village Bakery is the place to go. With Christmas fast approaching, we might have to add a Lemon Meringue Pie from Mapua Village Bakery to our list for Santa. If you are looking for gluten free treats, they have a whole cabinet dedicated to such goodies.
As well as bakery items, there’s both a breakfast and lunch menu should you prefer a more substantial meal. Dogs are well catered for, in fact there are bowls for water and dog treats made on site especially for our canine companions. Put simply, it’s a wonderful customer focused food destination.
Both Sean and Annie are full of praise for the community they have become part of, it’s been a fabulous journey for the popular local couple who are looking forward to retiring and spending more time together.
If you haven’t been to the Mapua Bakery and Café, do make the journey and yes their food really does look as good as it tastes. Find out more about this popular bakery via their website www.mapuavillagebakery.co.nz they are located in the heart of Mapua at 68 Aranui Rd.
Terri and Jim have landed at Hidden Valley Farm, on top of the Takaka Hill, at their lifetime dream property. Takaka Hill resembles Dartmoor National Park in the UK and really feels like home. The ambition is to build a self-sufficient lifestyle as possible, while reducing our daily commercial expenditure and use of plastics while reusing and recycling as much as possible to minimize our impact on the environment. The 400 acre property has its challenges but the benefits outweigh the struggles for the future.
Terri’s life time passion has been horses and ponies as well as farm animals, with a background education on all, Terri found herself struggling to accept modern farming ethics and does all she can to avoid it.
Terri tells us the plan is to only eat wild or home-kill meat and produce milk and other associated products on the farm, with her recently rescued milk industry calves Storm and Gail. The least we can do is give a quality life for those providing us with nourishment.
A garden is being developed to grow vegetables and fruit, with the help of volunteers Angela and Scott from Nelson, who can’t have a vege garden, so this is the best way for them to get good healthy vegetables.
Terri attracted some miniature ponies from unfortunate lifestyle situations. The first two ponies Sargent and Bo were loved pets of a family whose circumstance left them displaced. Zeb, Forest, Pixi and Rosie’s owner sadly passed from cancer, their future was uncertain until Terri offered them a permanent home.
We rely on gifts, donations of helpful equipment etc. but we want to give back. The animals need a purpose and it was also noticed that the general public were taking an interest and generated the idea to offer sponsorship or onsite adoption (Great Christmas present idea) for the animals, enabling those who would love an opportunity to help and even spend time with these animals could visit and do so.
Another fundraising idea was launched when Claire Hutt (a local Motueka icon) and her son started to visit and volunteer on the farm. Conversation inspired stories of the animals and their quirky antics. We are now in the process of publishing a series of preschooler picture books, with all profits going to the care of the animals.
Farmer Terri and Clairecrow are a funny duo who have visited the Steiner Fair and Motueka Library to introduce the first two stories; Hidden Valley Adventure; “I’m still hungry” the hungry sheep called Derick and “Babs the goat goes to the fair’’ (Watch this space. (https://www. facebook.com/NZHiddenValleyFarm) Claire describes the farm as her “Happy Place” she has gained so much confidence around the animals, we are so grateful for her support.
Exciting news has just reached us! that our local illustrator for the books and fundraising merchandise will be the wonderful Joolzart, her incredibly realistic, yet humorous tone to her work inspired by nature and wildlife will add a beautifully to the book.
PUBLISHING SPONSORSHIP WELCOME - 1356hvf@ gmail.com
The situation realised that there are many small holding lifestyle owners who for whatever reason need to relocate their loved pets but there was no certainty for their future in giving them away or even selling them.
Terri is stretched financially but wealthy in land and ability, so an idea sparked when a local lady contacted Terri, who had a peacock and seven hens (Big Blue, Candy, Floss, Velvet, Clara, Miss Bell, Genevieve and Hillary)) she loved them dearly but her circumstance meant they were at risk.
It was agreed that all could join the Hidden Valley family and the owner would continue to financially support the birds. She was delighted and comes to visit them often.
It is a perfect opportunity for parents to see how keen their child is before purchasing a pony or pet.
A regular and manageable ongoing donation will help the animals get the care they need (Vet, teeth, foot trimming, food, minerals, shelter, rugs etc.) while giving education and enjoyment to others.
Proudly supporting Hidden Valley Farm Ventures in their pursuit to share their piece of paradise with you
Another hidden secret on the property is “PETERSVILLE” a collection of unconventional out buildings, which is being developed into a glamping style farm holiday village. The old time space offers charm and embraces the simplicity of the past.
It is off grid, so leave your phones behind, self-catering cooking on an open fire and the shower depends on homemade heat or the sun.
Guests can enjoy the farm, the animals and virgin forests and streams or take advantage of other local activities, such as the Woolshed and felting, Ngarua Caves, Harwood Hole and even Canyoning to name a few. We are central to Motueka and Takaka, the activities are endless from your friendly base away from the
Terri is also The Dream Maker NZ a micro wedding planner and Celebrant and can offer affordable wilderness weddings and celebrations on the farm and around the region.
We rely on local generosity and sponsorship, Frasers Orchard provides the animals with endless buckets of apples and Motueka Hire supplied us with tools for example. Discounts from our farrier and horse dentist are a godsend.
People can join us for paid working holidays or wwoofing experiences or simply pop in for a day to volunteer and learn basic farming and animal care. We always welcome new ideas. We want to share our appreciation to those who help us in any way including these supported adverts.
Our new website will have links, so you can also support them back. Thank you from all our hearts, to the businesses and private donations, we truly appreciate them.
The future is to have a hub of locals and visitors to the region to come and help, enjoy the experience, and holiday here. We will offer pony pamper parties for children to enable us to continue. We are not a professional therapy centre, it’s simply a place to come and “Be” which in turn soothes all our souls.
If you need help to secure your loved pet or would like to share your time with the animals do get in touch.

This year Motueka AFC would like to thank all the football players, coaches, referees, and supporters of the club throughout the year. It has been a challenging season for all involved, but the club spirit was held high at each game in senior, youth and junior competition. This dedication was rewarded at the recent senior prize-giving, where the club recognised the achievements of Motueka’s senior Football players. The committee would like to thank all the players for making Motueka AFC the strong, successful rural club it has become. Motueka AFC would also like to openly invite its members and supporters to the upcoming AGM on Tuesday, 13 December 2022, at the Memorial club rooms at 7.30pm. There is no obligation to join the committee, but new
members are always welcome.

Four teams of under 12 and under 14 Motueka Touch players represented our region in the Tahunanui Junior Touch Development Tournament over the weekend of 12 and 13 November.
The annual tournament attracts aspiring young players from as far as Canterbury, Marlborough, Nelson, Richmond and Motueka to compete in all sorts of weather over two days.
Terina Graham and Joe Wineera of SoulUtionz Sports Trust have been organising the Motueka junior representatives for the past four years, when they were passed the reins from Rochelle Roberts in 2019. “It’s a great opportunity for young players to challenge themselves at the next level which allows them to develop a lot over the weekend,” says Terina. “As
advocates of positive experiences we have some of the most knowledgeable player/ coaches giving their time to support developing players.”
The U12 boys team coached by Weesang Paaka managed by Emma Paaka and U12 girls’ team coached by Joe Wineera and managed by Danielle Krammer had players completely new to the tournament scene, so learned a lot which will prepare them for next year.
The U14 boys team coached by Culainn Stringer and managed by Brent Stebbings with most players having been part of the tournament scene since they were ten years old, showcased some quality Touch over the two-days and just missed out on battling for one of the top two spots.
Nevertheless, coach Mackenzie Taikato of the U14 girls,
managed by Leah Drummond only had eleven players, faced five games on day one and took out first place in an epic final against Marlborough.
The tournament caters to members of Touch NZ affiliated modules such as the Motueka Touch competitive played in Riwaka, of which Melissa Cullen runs the junior grades on Thursday evenings.
Proof these develop-
ment opportunities are paying off, and the fact we have plenty of talent in the region, is evident from the many young players coming out of Motueka/ Riwaka Touch competition that excel to U14s, U16s and U18s representative levels.
“Besides the opportunities at the next level it’s the skill and game sense learning, working as a team through highs and lows and the fun play-
ers have from being part of the experience that are the true benefits,” says Terina. Special thanks to ITM and Harcourts for the loan of the gazebos. To find out more about junior touch for next year visit www.motuekatouch. co.nz to view photos and footage from the tournament go to SoulUtionz Sports Facebook page www.facebook.com/ SoulUtionzSports/

Access to the section of road, which provides a main thoroughfare connecting Māpua, Ruby Bay and Tasman Village has been closed since a major slip brought a large amount of material across the road during the August 2022 weather event.
The situation prompted safety concerns around the stability of the cliff face above. Council staff have spent the last three months undertaking investigations and consulting geotechnical experts in order to gather the best information and advice in the decision-making process.
Community Infrastructure Group Manager Richard Kirby said while a long-term management solution would be required to address the stability issues of the cliff face, potential risks associated with clearing slip material off Stafford Drive could be safely minimised to allow the short-term reopening of two lanes.
“The slip occurred in August 2022. It is now three months later, and the road remains closed – with summer almost upon us and the likelihood of more traffic on our region’s roads, extending this time any further is not tenable.”
“So, on that basis I have asked for the slip to be cleared away and opened to two lanes within the next four weeks.
Richard said if the long-term risks associated with reopening both lanes are considered too high, measures can be implemented. As part of the decision–making process we have developed a safety management plan which could enable the road to be reduced to one lane if necessary, based on observations as slip clearance work proceeds. Work is expected to begin on 6 December.
In the old days, it was a book that was delivered to letterboxes, nowadays the FOUND directory is a fabulous online tool which continues to grow in popularity, and now a new feature has been added to make it even more user-friendly.
The FOUND directory offers searchable listings of community groups and organisations by region or interest and a free profile page for every member group. Whether you’re looking for culture, art, sport, recreation, education or welfare, you’ll discover it on FOUND. But now you can use it to not only find facilities like halls and meeting places but also find out how to book them, in many cases online, for your next event or function. The list of venues is extensive and ranges from small meeting rooms at libraries to halls and sporting facilities.
The FOUND directory is supported by Tasman District and Nelson City Councils and administered by Volunteer Nelson. You can find it here: found.org.nz
The Tasman Alliance will start clearing the Pangatotara slip on the Motueka Valley Highway on Wednesday 30 November. Work is expected to take five working days, weather permitting. We’ve had to wait for the hillside to dry out so machinery can climb to the top and then start removing material from the site. Due to the nature of the work, and the need for machinery to be operating above the road, it is too dangerous to keep the single lane open during the project, so traffic will have to detour around the site. North bound vehicles towards Motueka will detour onto Waiwhero Road, then Edwards Road and then onto Main Road Lower Moutere. South bound traffic towards Tapawera will move on to the Motueka Valley West Bank Road at Alexander Bluff Bridge and exit at Woodstock Road. However, the detour roads are not suitable for heavy vehicles. Motueka Valley Highway will be closed to High Productivity Motor Vehicles (HPMV) during the work as there is no alternative route available, operators are urged to use the state highway network State Highway 6 and State Highway 60. Please follow signs and instructions from our staff to allow us to clear the material as fast as we can.
We are set to restart our schedule of wilding pine control operations for the 2022/23 season with our Jobs for Nature team undertaking drill and fill work and aerial work shortly.
Since 2020, we have teamed up with independent forestry management providers PF Olsen to conduct wilding pine control in the Mount Richmond Management Unit. To date, close to 12,000 ha of the park have been surveyed or had wilding conifer control work carried out as part of the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) funded activities.
The first year of the project saw five full-time employees carry out 8,707 hours of groundwork, controlling wildings across 200 ha of the park. The team also gained valuable skills in forestry and restoration work, while navigating often challenging terrain and multi-day excursions into the hills.
Jobs for Nature funding of $620,000 aims to cover 12,480 employment hours over three years. We are also grateful for further funding of $729,524 for the Mount Richmond project in 2022/23, with $613k coming from MPI and the balance provided by the Department of Conservation. We’ve also been pleased to support efforts to eradicate wilding conifers from sections of the Tākaka Hill by our partners Tākaka Hill Biodiversity Group Trust.
An artwork representing crashing waves now brightens a Motueka wall that once attracted repeated graffiti from taggers. The front wall of the wastewater pump station in Ledger-Goodman Reserve has undergone a transformation thanks to artist Dani Hedges. Dani has worked on other community projects with us in the past, so we commissioned her to bring her creativity to the wall and improve the building. She says the mural is inspired by the beauty and power of water.
The Tākaka Hill project is independent from our work around Mount Richmond. However, it is still an important part of wider eradication efforts and recent funding of $125,000 from MPI for 2022/23 will enable further control work on private and public conservation land within the Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National Parks.
Meetings will take place in person and via Zoom. Visit tasman.govt.nz/meetings-calendar for details and the Zoom link. Unless otherwise stated, all meetings will be held at Council Chambers, 189 Queen Street, Richmond.

Despite a severe injury Joeline Jones (far left) bounced back to claim four golds.
A severe ankle sprain just six weeks before a major competition only served our local track and field superstar, Joeline Jones, with an even bigger dose of determination.
Competing at the Pan Pacific Masters Games on Australia’s Gold Coast in November, Joeline won all four of her events.
The 60m, 100m, 200m and 400m with Joeline setting new personal bests in the 100m and 200m.
Unable to compete in the long jump and triple jump events due to her injury that resulted in three weeks of no running, instead replaced with aqua sprinting and extra gym and rehabilitation training, Joeline was grateful for the preparation she had done.
“I was fortunate that I had a very solid base training prior to injury and was ahead of my target goals, so I came back more determined with only three weeks of speed training before competition,” says Joeline.
Being supported overseas added fuel to Joeline’s tank with ex-local and NZ junior 400m sprint champion Amanda Fitisemanu taking on her manager’s role for the weekend.
Amanda communicated with Joeline’s coach, Tony Aikenhead and kept her nerves in check, together with another ex-local Michelle. Success continues for Joeline and upon her return home she learned she is a finalist in the Nelson Sports Awards for Masters Sportsperson of 2022 which will be announced on Friday, 2 December and also the NZ Masters Athletics as a finalist for the 2021 Masters Sports Person of the Year in the combined events/Pentathlon category, postponed in March due to Covid, and announced this Saturday, 3 December.
Currently preparing for the NZ Masters Track and Field nationals this weekend in Wellington, Joeline says the support of her whanau and coach has been invaluable.
“None of these achievements would be possible without my whanau taking the financial & time burden of my absence & training, as well as support from Motueka Recreation Centre Gym for my strength training, a knowledgeable physio and masseuse, but most importantly my fantastic coach Tony Aikenhead who helps make my dreams a reality.”
