Karate grading for ten locals

Ten local ninjas were successfully graded at the Motueka Dojo on Saturday, 20 August, among them seven children. While this would normally take place in Nelson, it was held locally with Sei Shihan Richmond Grant due to the recent passing of Eiko Hanshi Andy Barber.

It was said to be “a very successful grading with whanau lining the dojo with their support”.

“There was a strong sense of spirit felt in the dojo with all their hard mahi and strength shining through,” says Vairi Hikuroa.

With conservation week just around the corner, community volunteer group Friends of Flora (FoF) are looking to help get more people involved in protecting our flora and fauna. FoF were founded in 2001 and their enthusiastic volunteers are committed to conservation in the Wharepapa/Mt Arthur area. Re-introducing

Whio (blue duck) and Roroa (great spotted kiwi) to the area are just two of their successes.

Conservation week this year is running from Monday, 5 until Sunday, 11 September and the Department of Conservation have announced the theme for this year is “Take a moment to act for nature”.

To support this, FoF will be having a display in the flora carpark on Saturday, 10 and Sunday, 11 September from 9am til 2pm.

The display will include photos and information regarding the work that is being done in the flora including biodiversity monitoring of lizards, birds, insects, plants and pest and predator

control.

So, if you would like to meet, greet, and learn please head up to the flora carpark. Say hello, then take a walk around our incredible backyard and “take a moment to act for nature”

The Flora carpark is at the end of Graham Valley Road, Kahurangi National Park. The last 5.8km

of the Graham Valley Road is unsealed and climbs steeply to the car park.

They will also have a display in the Motueka Library during conservation week. If you can’t make it but would like to volunteer or make a donation, please see their website (fof.org.nz) or find them on Facebook (friends of flora).

Flora Hut is a popular destination for families.

High impact feature film shot locally

There’s always a buzz surrounding the short films that feature in the renowned Top of the South Film Festival and this year the action/thriller feature film ‘Northspur’ is already receiving high praise while having been impressively sold to a major US studio.

Filmed in Nelson and Marlborough ‘Northspur’ features local actress Gayle (Hay) Rawstorn who grew up in Mahana and Mapua. Already a multi-award winner in short films at the Festival, Gayle has been labelled a ‘fine actor’ by Sunday Star Times reviewer Grant Smithies.

“Northspur is a highimpact action feature stacked with fine actors from Aotearoa and Australia. It’s tense, vivid and beautifully shot, and has just been picked up for distribution in the US,” says Grant.

The film dramatically goes beyond exciting action scenes to explore the theme “how far would you go to protect whom you love?”

“In a violent, postpandemic world, a peace-loving man is forced on a desperate journey to find lifesaving drugs for his wife, but to get them he must first help an ornery old man defend his cabin against allcomers.”

A passionate homegrown effort Northspur was written, directed and produced in the Top of the South –made with many local cast and crew and shot amid the region’s stunning scenery. A completely inde-

pendent production, Northspur was funded exclusively by local investor consortiums, and received no state help or public money. Advised by many it couldn’t be done, the producers shot and finished a big action/ thriller movie in 18 days on a fraction of a Hollywood or NZ Film Commission budget.

Ruby Bay resident Tim Hawthorne is the film’s executive producer and producer and says Northspur will screen exclusively in 43 cinemas throughout New Zealand in September only, before its North American release later this year.

Together with the other producers, writer and director Tim committed five years to bring Northspur to the big screen, without compensation, making sure every investor dollar shows up “on screen” and demonstrating how success-

ful the filmmaking industry can be in our region.

Transforming filmmakers into carpenters, the crew even built the cabin which is the centre-piece of the movie itself, and filmed on multiple properties around the region generously donated by locals.

Motueka State Cinema’s Mark Wentworth says the film is “competition to a Quentin Tarantino film” while David Searle an award winning NZ film producer urges people to see the movie.

“Jaw-droppingly beautiful. Outstanding special effects.

If you’re a fan of

Westerns and New Zealand films, or simply a fan of Michael Hurst, then you need to see this film.”

Catch Northspur at Motueka State Cinemas from Thursday, 1 September. See State Cinema’s advertisement on page 25 for dates and times.

Strings Amore at the Motueka Chanel Arts Centre on Sept 3rd

The Motueka Music Group is delighted to present the quintet Strings Amore in partnership with Chamber Music New Zealand. The group brings together five of New Zealand’s finest string players, and was established to perform baroque music on modern instruments with attention to performance practices of

the eighteenth century. The eighteenth century was the height of the baroque era and in this programme, there is a special focus on the viola d’amore and on four famous baroque composers who wrote for this unusual instrument.

The Baroque ensemble showcases the talent of Donald Maurice on viola d’amore,

Martin Riseley and Rupa Maitra on violins, Sophia Acheson on viola, and Margaret Guldborg on cello. Enjoy their fascinating programme at the Chanel Arts Centre on Monday, 5 September at 7.30pm. Well loved by some of the greatest composers of the Baroque era, the viola d’amore is a particularly beauti-

ful instrument that has between six and seven strings, each of which is paired with a sympathetic string. The sympathetic strings add a resonant shimmer to the sound, which is most apparent when heard up close.

Celebrated works by Telemann, Bach, and Vivaldi, and the masterful but unjustly under-performed

Graupner will let the timeless grace of the viola d’amore shine through, wonderfully supplemented by its string counterparts. Tickets, adults $25, schoolchildren $5, can be purchased from Floral Affaire, High Street, Motueka (cash only) or at the door on the night of the concert (EFTPOS available).

Have you got a dog at work?

Dear Editor,

Whilst it is gratifying that The Greypower association is seemingly ‘Out of Covid’ lockdown and finally having a Public AGM, it is also less than gratifying and untenable that as Members we have had no/any meaningful service updates since March 2021?

Guardian been published regularly?

Local Body Elections? Soon upon us; But Candidates in the Dark on GP Forum?

A nationwide search to celebrate our canine colleagues in the workplace started this week on Monday, 29 August.

Frog Recruitment’s seventh annual Top Office Dog competition is calling for nominations in three categories: New Zealand’s Top Dog with a Job, New Zealand’s Top Home Office Dog – a people’s choice category, and the ultimate, and the top prizeNew Zealand’s Top Office Dog.

Our faithful furry friends have become more prominent in our working lives as more New Zealand workers adapt to hybrid work from home scenarios.

As more Kiwi workers return to their regular workplace, nearly two thirds (63 percent) of workers reported experiencing dog-ownerseparation anxiety (DOSA), according to

a recent poll by Frog Recruitment.

Forty five percent of workers polled admitted their DOSA has led to them bringing their four-legged friend into their office during work hours, and almost half (21 percent) of these dogs are now accompanying their owner to work on a permanent basis.

Others have embraced a more flexible working from home model to help reduce their DOSA, with over 60% of those surveyed changing their working habits to include working from home part time (37 percent) or fulltime (25 percent).

Frog Recruitment Managing Director Shannon Barlow says dogs have a positive impact on people’s mental health, and their role in increasing productivity in the workplace has been

well documented.

“Dogs at work are known to improve workplace culture. The data also tells us they play a role in reducing separation anxiety for workers in this pandemic age. The Top Office Dog competition celebrates all of these things, and is an opportunity for us to applaud the companies that value the role of dogs at work and how they support employees to do their best work, while boosting mental health in the workplace,” says Shannon.

Last year’s competition saw over 400 entries from across New Zealand enter to battle it off for the trophy. Trust, a cattlecross from Auckland was the 2021 winner of ‘Top Office Dog’. Trust was given the title ‘Wellbeing Officer’ at Family Works Waitemata where her owner, social worker

Phoenix Llewellyn was employed.

Phoenix says because of Trust’s ‘beautiful soul and loving nature’ she made a difference to people’s lives and was assigned the special job.

Judging will be undertaken by sponsors Petstock, Frog Recruitment and dog trainer and behaviourist, Mark Vette. The winners will be announced live on Frog Recruitment’s Facebook, Linkedin, and Youtube channel on Thursday, 29 September 2022.

Entries for the competition opened at www.nztopdog. co.nz on Monday 29 August 2022. The Top Office Dog winner will receive the Top Dog trophy, a paw-some $1000 PETstock voucher, Doggles eye wear and a bow courtesy of PETstock and Royal Canin.

Dear Editor,

Thank you for your article about candidates standing for local body elections. Could I please ask the candidates in future articles to state their affiliations to organisations they represent such as The Outdoors and Freedom Party?

Only Aly Cook has declared this link but I am aware that there are others standing who have similar views but are not as transparent. Other labels such as “Common Sense” and “Sensible, Ethical and Open,” “Community Minded” would hopefully be fundamental qualities required for the job, not a connection to any group or organisation. It would be useful to have more information rather than these self-ascribed titles. Another label is “Independent”. What do the candidates mean by this? Independent of what?

I look forward to more information that will enable me to cast a vote, confident about the candidates’ values and reasons for putting themselves forward for these important positions.

Yours sincerely, Marieann

WHAT’S HAPPENING

As you can see we have a great selection of used Hilux's in either 2WD or 4WD. These have been largely hard to get hold of but we are now seeing a few coming in.

Also, all Toyota Certified Used Import vehicles now come with a 3 Year Vehicle Warranty and the Hybrids have the additional 5 Year Hybrid Battery Warranty. How exciting is that?! We have a huge stock of hybrids, now instore, so don't delay. We even have a very rare "AWD PRIUS". This car is in Mot so if you need an AWD car, this may be for you. Cheers.

Hello

Rain damage to top of the South Island tracks

Sections of the Abel Tasman Coast Track and Queen Charlotte Track remain open but others are temporarily closed after the heavy rain caused multiple slips and other damage.

Most of the Queen Charlotte Track in the Marlborough Sounds is open but caution is advised for walkers and biking is not recommended. Coastal areas of Abel Tasman National Park can be accessed by boat.

The tracks are among a number of Department of Conservation tracks and campsites in Nelson Tasman and Marlborough impacted by the severe weather. Access roads to some campsites, huts and conservation areas are closed due to landslides and other damage.

In Abel Tasman National Park, all beaches and campsites that can be accessed by boat and kayak are open and the four coast track huts are open for use if able to be accessed. There is limited road access due to slips to northern areas of the park, including the Wainui entrance, Awaroa, and Totaranui Campground but the campground is open and can be accessed by boat.

DOC Northern South Island Operations Director Roy Grose says DOC staff are still checking tracks in the region and the full extent of damage is not yet known.

“We’re advising people to check our website www.doc. govt.nz for the latest information on the status of tracks, campsites and access to conservation areas in the top of the South Island before head-

ing into the outdoors. This will be subject to change as we as assess damage and carry out repairs.

“Our staff are working as quickly as possible to assess and repair damage and reopen closed sections of tracks but there is a considerable amount of work to do and it will take time.”

DOC staff are contacting people with Abel Tasman Coast Track hut and campsite bookings to offer refunds or to change their bookings to another available date.

On the Heaphy Track, there is currently no access to Heaphy Hut from Kohaihai on the western side due to a slip at Crayfish Point.

The Heaphy Track can be accessed from the Brown Hut end but the section between Heaphy Hut and James MacKay Hut was already closed due to damage to bridges from February storms.

“While we are still assessing and repairing damage, anyone venturing out on tracks could encounter slips, fallen trees and washed-out sections,” says Roy Grose.

“People should take extra care and be prepared to turn back if the going is difficult or damage is impassable.

“We’re also asking people to report any damage they encounter on tracks, such as landslides and fallen trees, particularly in more remote backcountry areas which our rangers get to less often. People can report damage by calling DOC’s 24-hour number 0800 DOC HOTline (0800 362 468).”

Supporting the mental health of our rangatahi (youth)

Helping our young people to understand and navigate their mental health and build resilience after a crisis is core to supporting them through this time.

What is mental health?

Positive mental health is often connected to having a sense of purpose, knowing who we are, being able to do the things that matter to us and feeling connected to others. This is linked to resilience, which is having positive ways to deal with your feelings, recover from things that impact you and enjoy life even when things are hard. It’s important to know, though, that having positive mental health overall doesn’t mean you’re excluded from experiencing mental distress. Our hauora is not individual. It’s a weaving together of our wh nau our whakapapa our connection to the world around us and our beliefs. This helps us form an identity that connects us to our past, grounds us in our present and lifts us up to the opportunities our future holds.

It means that we’re a part of something bigger than ourselves and within this we can nd people

Tips for providing help to children after a crisis:

• Discuss with children what has happened. Giving them the facts without unnecessary detail helps prevent their imagination taking over.

• Encourage them to express emotions. Fear and sadness are their way of coming to terms with what has happened. Hold them or stay with them, offer support while they are upset and talk about it afterwards.

• Keep communication open by asking uestions to nd out what they are thinking or imagining. Tell them how adults feel and what the actions of adults under stress mean. This will prevent children blaming themselves.

• Maintain routine and familiarity to help children see that life is secure and predictable.

• Reduce change of any type to a minimum. When change is necessary, take time to prepare children for it.

• Keep them informed of how their recovery is going and what to expect.

• Make time for just being together. Take time out and re-establish recreational activities and outings as soon as you can. Having fun is an important part of healing.

who care and support, stories that uplift us and help us to feel connected and heard, and a sense of belonging and acceptance of who we are. Your mental health is closely linked to how you think and feel about yourself and others, how you create and manage relationships and friendships and the ways that you’re able to cope with the ups and downs of emotions that you face in your everyday life.

Why apps are important self-help tools?

Apps hold amazing potential as mental health and wellbeing tools. You can carry them everywhere, engage with them in real time as you’re experiencing distress, and interact with them in a completely different way to other self-help tools. It is important to remember that apps don’t replace professional help or your doctor’s advice, and there is no current accreditation system for apps that are designed.

Smiling mind

An app where you can practice daily meditation and mindfulness exercises from any device.

Mindshift

ses scienti cally proven strategies to help you learn to relax and be mindful, develop more effective ways of thinking, and use active steps to take charge of anxiety.

Calm Harm

A free app that helps you manage or resist the urge to self-harm.

Help name Nelson Airport’s new fire truck!

Nelson Airport’s new $1.4 million Rosenbauer Panther fire truck is on its way to New Zealand from Austria – and the airport wants help from the community to name the state of the art firefighting vehicle.

The new fire truck will be operated by the Nelson Airport Rescue Fire Service, which provides and maintains rescue and firefighting capability at the airport and carries out a wide range of airfield responsibilities to maintain the safety and security of the airport environment.

Nelson Airport Safety

and Sustainability

Manager James Middlewick says the Rescue Fire team provides a vital service to the travelling public and local aviation community and is keen for the public to help personalise its new arrival.

“The Rosenbauer Panther is an impressive piece of equipment – it has a 700 horsepower Volvo engine, a cannon that can throw water up to 80 metres and it can blast 6500 litres of water per minute.

In the event of an emergency our firefighters need to react

extremely quickly and it’s important they have the best equipment available to allow them to do that.

Their existing fire truck, which sadly has remained nameless, has provided good service but is now due for replacement.”

James says the truck is due to arrive in Nelson in mid-late October. To mark its arrival, the airport is seeking name suggestions between now and Wednesday, 7 September.

“I’m excited to see what people come up with. Once entries close, the suggestions

will go to an invited judging panel, which will make a final decision.”

The winner of the naming competition will be invited to take a ride in the new fire truck and will receive a framed photograph of the experience, a $100 Prezzy card and a $50 voucher for Sublime Coffee at the airport.

Entries are open until Wednesday, 7 September. All the information, including terms and conditions, are available at nelsonairport. co.nz/name-thetruck.

Skipper sentenced

A failure to keep watch has been identified as the reason a vessel ran aground at a sentencing at the Nelson District Court in August. Skipper

Tony Phillipson has been sentenced under the Maritime Transport Act, after the Mistral ran aground in July 2021, north of the Whanganui Inlet in the Tasman Region.

The incident occurred after Tony put the vessel on to auto-pilot while he was in the wheelhouse.

Southern Compliance Manager Domonic Venz says even when auto-pilot is set up and the course is plotted, the skipper needs to pay attention and monitor the course the vessel is on.

“Sadly this didn’t take place on the Mistral as Tony fell asleep.”

As a result of the incident the vessel suffered serious damage and could not be salvaged.

Failing to properly keep watch increases the risk of a vessel being involved in a collision, or as occurred in this case, running aground.

Domonic says, “keeping a good watch is critically important. The safety of everyone on the vessel is in your hands”. A proper lookout should be maintained at all times, he says.

Tony Phillipson was sentenced under the Maritime Transport Act, for operating a ship in a manner which caused unnecessary danger or risk to a person or property. He was fined $3000 and ordered to pay $130 in costs. In fining Tony, the judge noted that he had lost approximately $250,000 from uninsured losses arising out of the incident.

It was accepted that this was not a mitigating factor of the offending, but rather, an absence of an aggravating factor.

The Crafty Tarts held a successful and well-attended ‘Learn to Knit’ at the Motueka Library on Saturday, 20 August. Despite the horrendous weather the night before several families and numerous children seized the opportunity to learn from the Tarts great skills.

“Our business is eight years old but I’ve been involved in the industry for 37 years,” explains Kerry.

“I am really pleased we have a good name in the community and back up everything we sell and every job we do.”

Yes there is a reason why Lifestyle Centre is so popular with locals, they stand behind every piece of equipment they sell and they are dedicated to outstanding

They are so dedicated to their clientele that Kerry makes a regular weekly trip over the hill to Golden Bay offering his customers a pickup and delivery service. To all our Golden Bay readers, this is wonderful news, especially those busy on the farm and may not have time to take their equipment into town for a service. Simply pick up the phone and give Kerry a call to arrange a visit.

Kerry says customers should be servicing their equipment every 50 hours or once a year to maintain top working order and to ensure your equipment has a long life.

Local hunting competition this weekend!

Whether it’s the thrill of the chase or just the great social atmosphere of Sunday’s weigh-in and prize-giving, there are plenty of reasons to get together with friends for the Riwaka Rugby Club’s Big Hog Hunt this weekend.

The competition rules are simple, unlike most other hunting competitions, no registration is required. Instead, you pay on the day when you weigh your animal. That’s fantastic, it means if you don’t bag an animal, you haven’t lost any money on your entry form.

There is no restriction on distance in relation to where you choose to go - just as long as you are back at the

Every good hunter has their favourite spot and most will have planned their preferred hunting grounds in advance - not that they’d tell anyone the exact location! As long as you’ve met all the legal requirements regarding access to land, then the potential to show off a prize winning set of tusks or rack of antlers comes down to your hunting skills and often a little bit of luck.

Advice for hunters

If you’ve have a permit to hunt on public conservation land, there are many places to go and plenty of different species to hunt.

The Department of Conservation (DOC) provides a handy map on their website which also lists any alerts in the area that hunters should be aware of, you can access it via the link below.

www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/things-to-do/ hunting

There have been no recent droppings of pesticides in our region. The link below provides information and maps about pesticide drops across New Zealand. www.doc.govt.nz/nature/pests-and-threats/pesticidesummaries

Do make sure you dress for the elements. Many hunters are well aware of how quickly conditions can change especially at this time of year.

Most importantly let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.

carry your rifle as opposed to having it slung over your shoulder, to keep movement to a minimum when lining up a shot.

• Red deer often stay within forest cover for much of the day. Stalk carefully along mid-valley terraces and gully heads where feed is abundant.

• n windy weather deer will seek sheltered areas and will keep sheltering in heavy rain, whilst during light drizzle, overcast weather feeding can occur all hours of the day.

Feral Pig Hunting Tips

Do ensure you are adequately prepared with supplies, including a first aid kit, torch, survival blanket and snacks among other items.

Be smart and hire a locator beacon. Locator beacons cost just $20 to hire for the weekend or $30 for a seven day hire and could save your life. You can hire locator beacons at a number of places around the region including Motueka Isite and DOC. Explore the link below to find out where else you can hire one of these life saving devices. www.nelsonarealocatorbeacontrust.org.nz

If you are hunting on public land, each person in a hunting party needs a separate permit, whether you’re hunting with a firearm, bow or knife. Hunting after dark and spotlighting is illegal on conservation land.

If you’re hunting with a gun, you need a valid New Zealand firearms licence. If you do not have one, you can only hunt with a gun if you’re with someone who does have a licence. You have to be sharing the gun, and they need to stay within arm’s reach of you while you’re using it.

Deer Hunting Tips

• eeding activity tends to be greatest in the early morning and late afternoon. Plan your hunt accordingly.

• Red deer have a sharp sense of smell eyesight and hearing. Hunt into the wind as quietly as possible and take advantage of available cover.

Craig Fry “Cracker”

• Pigs have relatively poor eyesight but both acute hearing and smell. Hunt upwind towards pigs keeping as quiet as possible, avoiding noisy vegetation etc.

• uring summer especially pigs are active late evening and early morning. Time hunting to be in likely areas late evening and early morning when pigs are most active.

• Pigs will often be out feeding when it is overcast and light rainfall. On overcast wet days, check carefully for pigs out feeding in the open at any time of the day.

Hunting with dogs

Pig hunting with dogs is probably the most common method throughout New Zealand and hunters using dogs should be aware of the following.

• f taking dogs onto public conservation land this needs to be recorded on the hunting permit.

• n some areas dogs are not permitted.

• Check that the intended hunting area hasn t recently had pesticides applied.

• or many areas where there are ground nesting birds, bird aversion training for dogs is mandatory with proof of training required.

• very effort should be made to recover lost dogs and informing local landowners or DOC may help.

• To comply with animal welfare re uirements pigs at the ‘bail’ should be dispatched as quickly and humanly as possible.

About the Riwaka Rugby Club

The Riwaka Rugby Club’s purpose is to promote, support, and strengthen rugby in our community. Our vision is to provide an environment to have fun, make new friends and experience the unique culture of rugby. We have a fantastic community of rugby and encourage any player or any age to have a go.

We also have fantastic facility that is available for a range of uses for anyone. We love supporting and getting behind local events such as the Big Hog Hunt.

We have had an exceptional 2022 season with lots of great games played by our junior teams. The Kahurangi Men’s teams had a fantastic season, making it all the way to the final but unfortunately came off second best.

The Kahurangi Women’s team had a short but great season with a strong number of players this year and the Riwaka Men’s senior division 2 team made it all the way to the final and only just missed out on the win!

We are very proud of how all of teams have gone this season. We know that there were a lot of hard hours of training that were put in by the players from the JAB (junior rugby) right up to our senior men’s and women’s team and of course there was a lot of time put in by the coaches and managers too.

A massive thank you to our sponsors too, we couldn’t do what we do without you! We are excited and looking forward to the 2023 season already.

If you want to play rugby for any age group or team, become a volunteer, or just watch some local rugby contact us and we will be more than happy to assist you. www.riwakarugbyclub.nz

When the land is well, the people are well

Take a moment to act for nature this Conservation Week 5 - 11 September. Conservation Week 2022 focuses on how we can take action for nature. Taking action not only benefits nature, but also our personal wellbeing. Ka ora te whenua, ka ora te tangata – when the land is well, the people are well. When Papatúãnuku thrives, we thrive.

DOC Motueka Operations Manager Mark Townsend says; “We have many dedicated conservation focused organisations and community groups in our region and it’s great to see them supporting Conservation Week by collaborating to organise activities for people to get involved in and learn about how they can act for nature.”

Nature needs us

New Zealand’s wildlife is still in crisis with more than 4,000 of our native animals and plants threatened or at risk. Conservation Week is a chance to bring everyone together to do something, big or small to create change.

Every year Conservation Week sees thousands of New Zealanders getting involved through doing conservation activities at home or attending one of many events hosted across the country. Creating change can be big or small, when we pull together, we can make a big difference.

History of Conservation Week

Conservation Week was originally launched in 1969 by the New Zealand Scout Association, with the goal to promote greater interest in the environment and encourage people to take practical actions to look after it.

The Nature Conservation Council then had a turn at running the campaign, while other organisations like the

Post Office Savings Bank, Caltex Oil NZ, and The Todd Foundation came to the party with educational resources.

Over the years famous artists like Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Don Binney have contributed their art for previous campaigns.

When the Department of Conservation was formed in 1987 it took over the Conservation Week duties, and has since worked with other groups, businesses, councils and agencies to make it all happen.

Our native species are in trouble and need us to act

New Zealand’s native species are in serious trouble –over 4,000 species are threatened or at risk of extinction. This includes unique and iconic New Zealand wildlife like kiwi, kãkãpò, takahè, yellow-eyed penguin/hoiho, Hector’s dolphins and bats/pekapeka.

But what we do makes a difference. We’ve proven in many parts of the country that we can reverse this decline. When we manage threats and restore habitats, nature comes back.

Each of us can help nature. If we all play a part, the difference will be even greater. There are volunteering opportunities around the country. These projects are restoring nature and bringing back native species.

Volunteering

for nature is not always tree planting

You can take action for nature in a lot of different ways. Common ways to contribute include giving your time to volunteering to plant trees, pull weeds and trap predators.

You do not need to be fit or enjoy working outside to get involved. Community groups often need volunteers to help with many other tasks. Like event organisation, grant writing, social media and project planning. And volunteering is good for volunteers too

Taking action benefits nature. But it also benefits our own wellbeing too. It can boost your mood, offer enjoyment and satisfaction, and help us to connect with our communities.

Many volunteers enjoy the social aspect of volunteering – you can join with a group of friends or going along by yourself and meet new people.

Volunteering can also be a useful source of work experience. It can be a chance to learn, upskill, gain some practical skills, and develop your leadership abilities.

• We have been providing Transport, Construction and Earthmoving Services since 1928.

There are a wide range of volunteering opportunities with DOC around the country. These vary depending on the time of year, but they include things like:

• Planting trees

• Being a campsite host or hut warden for a few weeks during summer

• Maintaining tracks

• Repairing/maintaining historic sites

• Teaching visitors about local wildlife

• Responding to callouts from the public about distressed seals

Volunteer with your community

Take a moment to protect your spaces by picking up rubbish.

Rubbish can be found everywhere and we all know it’s bad for the environment – it harms our land, soil, waterways, and wildlife. It’s an overwhelming task for any one individual to pick up. But if we work together, we can protect and restore the beauty and health of our natural spaces.

This Conservation Week we are challenging you take a moment to act for nature and pick up rubbish to protect the local spaces that matter to you. The places you go to, to have fun, exercise and relax.

By picking up rubbish to protect your space and the nature that enriches it, you will support local wildlife and your own wellbeing. Because when Papatúãnuku thrives, we thrive.

The space that matters most to you might be your favourite beach, or a bike trail you hit on weekends. Maybe it’s the sports field you play at, or nearby hills where you go to relax. Perhaps it’s the loop your run around your neighbourhood, or the walk to a café you go to with family and friends.

Next generation of footballers going great guns

On Saturday mornings at Goodman Park, you will see a hive of football activity. Here, Motueka AFC showcases the pathway from First Kicks/ Fun Football, to 9th, 10th, 11/12th, 13/14th and the U17 grades, which feeds into the club’s senior teams. It seems fitting that the beginning of the day is First Kicks/Fun Football, as this is also the beginning of these sport stars football journey.

This year FK/FF has around 40 footballers ranging from 4-8 years old. There has been an upswing in numbers this season, which highlights the increasing popularity of the game. At the

forefront of FK/FF is De`Anne Fraser who has been running these sessions for three seasons. This year De has the game day support from Charli and additional parental support, from Francisco. In addition, gear is needed so games can happen. This includes balls, pop up goals, game day trophies and team shirts.

This year the FK/ FF children have new goals and balls, along with a complete set of quick dry shirts, kindly sponsored by New World Motueka. Nicola and Simon Hollyer moved up to Motueka six months ago, from Gore. Simon was born in Nelson and

it seemed fitting to return to raise their two boys here. They have owned a New World franchise previously and so this was a fantastic opportunity for their family. Motueka AFC (junior football) previously had a longstanding sponsorship from New World Motueka, which Nicola and Simon are more than happy to continue. Their son, Finlay played football in the First Kicks for the first time this year and is making new friends while enjoying being involved in a team sport. Motueka AFC would like to gratefully acknowledge the time and support these families give to the club, making football

available to all of our budding football players.

Saturday’s games

Bowlers, sausages and cakes equals success

were cancelled due to local weather conditions, although the Men’s 1st Division cup

game (Price Charity Cup) was played in Nelson. The ITM Motueka 1st XI lost

0-3, dropping them out of the cup competition. Player of the Day was Piers Comins.

Tasman Smallbore

The members of Mapua Bowling Club had planned and scheduled Saturday, 20 August for a cake sale to raise funds for two charities in Ukraine.

So it was an anxious and upsetting week with torrential rain, floods, landslides, evacuations and the loss of houses in the Nelson area. Our

hearts went out to all the people affected by the extreme weather event, the first responders on the ground and everyone involved in keeping lives safe.

But back in Mapua cakes had been made and the people of Ukraine undeniably still needed our help so the fundraiser went ahead at Mapua

Wharf.

Between the hours of 10 and 3, the sun shone and the stall set up was laden with cakes, biscuits, pies, marmalade and cheese rolls! It was an amazing sight. We are so grateful to everyone that baked and everyone who bought with such generosity. By the end of the day there was hardly

anything left and now the Kiev Children’s Hospital and Relief Aid will benefit from the Bowling Club’s support. The target was $1,000. After the sausage sizzle, raffle and cake sale we are delighted to report that we have almost $1,500 to share between the two charities, a noble effort by all involved.

Be as a lamp unto them that walk in darkness, a joy to the sorrowful, a sea for the thirsty, a haven for the distressed, an upholder and defender of victim of oppression.
