Billie’s mother says the passion developed through Billie’s father’s involvement in the army. Billie and her father began watching Sea Patrol together, and since then the little girl’s interest has continued to grow. “She has posters and other navy stuff all around her room, Jo can get them for her. It’s such a great thing for her to be interested in, it’s a very healthy interest. It just offers such great role models for her,” says Gemmah Edgley. The HMNZS Taupo doesn’t often berth in Nelson, as Nelson is the home port of an identical Lake-class patrol vessel, the HMNZS Pukaki. This class of vessel’s primary role is to undertake maritime security missions around New Zealand and into the southwest Pacific, working with government agencies. Gemmah says if anything the tour will have increased Billie’s obsession with the navy. Billie says she wants to be in the navy when she is old enough, with a goal to work as a “computer girl”. Naval vessels are open for public tours on occasion, with the HMSNZ Pukaki docking in Nelson around once a year for public viewing.
FROM PAGE 1 he says. “This is an argument that you can’t not be happy with. It should be a no brainer.” A Memorandum of Understanding between all three councils will provide the political mandate for the chief executives to progress joint purchasing and shared services proposals. Meetings about the proposal have already been held and the next step will be approving the document. Tasman District mayor Richard Kempthorne says the move is a “natural progression” of the relationships the three councils already share,
before hinting that transport and roading is the first area the three councils will look to work on together, in collaboration with the New Zealand Transport Agency. Finance and IT were other areas that would be looked at, he says. Richard was confident that sharing services would also be of financial benefit to the regions ratepayers, stating that they would not “bother” with the proposal if it was just going to cost more than its current structure. Aldo says it will have financial benefits. “If you can get the governance right it can make things a lot smoother and easier as well as save money.”

World film Art expo crowds ‘amaze’ organisers premiere for Nelson Nelson will host the world premiere of the movie based on its iconic trolley derby and featuring many of its citizens. The makers of “Kiwi Flyer” announced the dates of the red carpet premier on its Facebook page on Thursday. It will be on Tuesday, September 18 at the Theatre Royal with general release in cinemas around New Zealand from Thursday, September 27, just in time for school holidays. “Kiwi Flyer” is based on a boy preparing for the Collingwood St Trolley Derby while overcoming several obstacles. Most of the filming was done in Nelson with local businesses and even schools getting involved. It included 30 local actors alongside a cast from around New Zealand and Australia. Nelson City Council helped fund the movie, along with Nelson investor group Venture Accelerator Ltd, NZ on Air and the New Zealand Film Commission. Its total budget was $1.1 million.

The Inaugural Nelson Art Expo fuelled the fire of Nelson’s creative culture, with more than three and a half thousand people flooding the Trafalgar Centre to see works by artists both local and national. The exhibition displayed works from around 100 artists, from painters and photographers to sculptors and jewellers. For the exhibition-goers it was a chance to find a unique piece for their home or garden. For the artists it was a chance to have their work seen by the throngs of people the expo attracted. Organisers say the turnout was “fantastic,” with people coming from all over the country to see the exhibition. “For a first event, it was great. We had to jump off a cliff really, and just hope for the best, but it was very successful. We had people really engaging in the art who possibly wouldn’t go to a normal art gallery,” says project manager Nic Foster. The exhibitors were also delighted and impressed with the exposure their works received. “We had really successful art sales which I can’t confirm just yet, but I think it’s over $50,000 worth of art sales,” says Nic. “We got the most beautiful thank you from all the artists, they all seemed really really happy, all those people walking past every piece of art. They got exposed to a huge number of people. We didn’t have one bad response,” says Nic. Among the exhibitors was Peg Moor-

Weekly readers not just in Nelson Early statistics from the Nelson and Waimea Weekly’s new website show people are reading from all over the world. Predictably, Nelsonians dominated the number of visits, with almost 30 per cent coming from the sunshine city. But the number of people reading the Nelson Weekly’s online edition has jumped from around 300 per week to more than 3300 per week, since the launch of the new website. And readers are coming from as far away as the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Canada, Germany, United States, Spain, France, Mexico and Australia. Last Wednesday alone, 797 people visited the website, 309 of those being Nelsonians. Auckland had the second highest number
of visitors with 236 and 225 from Wellington. New York was highest of the foreign cities, with visits from 40 different computers. Others came from Brisbane, Melbourne, Tauranga, Upper Hutt and Blenheim. The stats were compiled by Google Analytics and show steady increase in the number of people visiting the new website. The digital version of the paper has always been popular with around 300 people outside of Nelson reading it a week. But the
jump to ten times that many has been a shock. The Weekly’s also have more Facebook fans than any other Nelson newspaper, more than 2800 followers, adding to its online presence. Weekly editor Andrew Board says he is thrilled with the results. “A lot of Nelsonians live outside the region for whatever reason and many of them email us to say how important it is they can still read the local newspaper no matter where they are. “But we wanted this site to also be relevant to Nelsonians still living here so we’ve
added a photo gallery section, online poll, feeds to our Facebook and Twitter accounts and the ability to update our website with breaking news throughout the week. Obviously, that has been welcomed by our readers.” The figures are also good news for advertisers that have already taken spots on the page. “Our newspaper has a massive reach which is great for our advertisers and these early figures show our online advertisers are also reaching a huge number of visitors,” he says. Andrew says anyone keen to talk about advertising on the Weekly website can call Sarah or Scott on 548 4949 or email sales@ nelsonweekly.co.nz.

Rugby clubrooms are bit like pubs, a good place to tell the odd lie. But the talk inside the Stoke Rugby Clubrooms on Saturday of its earliest days were all true. The Old Timer’s Day for Stoke Rugby Club was a chance to reminisce and celebrate the clubs history. The Star Rugby Club began in 1947, and on Saturday the club celebrated 50 years of participation in senior A club rugby, the same year it changed its name to Stoke club. Team members past and present gathered in the clubrooms, with players from 1947 through to current players. Murray Stringer, who was part of the original Star team, was the only member present from that original squad, that played in division three. “We got hammered every game,” says Murray. “But we had a ball, it was a lot of fun.” Murray went on to coach the team, and his granddaughter has also played for Stoke. Bert Smith, captain of the original Stoke senior A team from 1962, presented a club uniform to the current captain, Stu Tunicliffe, to celebrate 50 years of Stoke participating at a senior level.

Andrew Board Nicki van Asch has never been to the World of Wearable Art Awards Show before, but that hasn’t hindered her creative inspiration, with her first ever entry being selected as a finalist for the awards. Nicki entered this year’s Brancott Estate World of Wearable Art Award Show in the Bizarre Bra section and was selected as a finalist along with 10 other Nelsonians. She says it was a goal of hers to enter the awards after visiting the WOW Museum several times. “I always sit down at the start of the year and have a bit of a think about what projects I’m going to undertake for that particular year and this year I decided that one of those projects was going to be wearable art during winter. “I went along to a function for designers here in Nelson and that sort of nailed it because it was quite inspiring to be surrounded by all these designers and so many other super creative people. I got caught up in the excitement and there was no turning back at that point.” She designed her entry on napkins in cafes around Nelson and sought advice from her handyman father on how to bring some of her ideas to life. Her lounge was turned into her workspace and visitors were greeted with her entry at various

The Brancott Estate WOW Awards Show is now in its 24th year and is New Zealand’s largest arts show, with more than 50,000 show goers from around the world attending every year. In a breathtaking twohour spectacular of art, theatre, dance, and music, incredible designs are brought to life. This year’s show season in Wellington runs from September 27 to October 7.
Nicki says she had a “jaw dropping moment” when she received an email to say she was a finalist and will definitely be back next year. “It feels quite special to be fortunate enough to be involved because it is such a great Nelson story. I love Nelson and I love being a Nelsonian so that connection makes it particularly special for me. “I enjoyed the process. It’s been a great project over those winter months when it’s easy to hunker down and not achieve much. I’m already started thinking about some ideas for next year.”

Free 'flu jab' extended The free influenza immunisation for people aged over 65 years and those with some medical conditions has been extended until the end of August. The opportunity to have a free influenza vaccination this year, has been extended because of the high influenza rates in Canterbury, South Canterbury, Otago and Southland. Medical Officer of Health, Dr Jill Sherwood, says this is a particularly serious influenza virus with greater numbers of hospitalisations for influenza than we saw during the 2009 swine flu pandemic. “We know that the at-risk groups are people over 65 years of age, pregnant women and those with underlying health conditions. These groups are eligible for a free vaccination.” Dr Sherwood says this year’s vaccine covered the majority of strains shown to be currently in circulation in New Zealand. Although there are also two variant strains circulating it is expected that the vaccine will still offer significant protection against these strains. “Influenza is not just a ‘bad
cold’. Although some of the symptoms may be similar, influenza is much more severe. Influenza can lead to serious complications, particularly in people with an existing medical condition,” she says. She says flu symptoms include a high fever and cough or sore throat and can have other symptoms of headache, muscle aches and pains, tiredness, or runny nose. “People with flu symptoms should stay at home until well and seek medical advice if anyone with flu is getting worse, or if a person with an underlying condition such as asthma gets the flu. "Do not arrive at your GP practice without phoning to advise of your condition,” says Dr Sherwood. To stop the spread of influenza cover coughs and sneezes, regularly wash hands and dry them thoroughly and avoid close contact with sick people. Contact your doctor or practice nurse or for 24 hour health advice phone Healthline on 0800 611 116 for more information or go to www.influenza.org.nz or www.moh. govt.nz or call 0800 IMMUNE 0800 466 863.

Work on education trust celebrated Andrew Board
The founding chair of a children’s education trust was recognised for his hard work and dedication at a ceremony last week. Chris Buckley was chair of the Life Education Trust in Nelson for ten years and still serves as a trustee. Current chair Marg Palmer received the Distinguished Service Award on Chris’ behalf at National Conference in Masterton last month but kept it a secret until last Thursday’s annual get together with supporters of the trust, surprising him with it. Chris says he was definitely shocked. “I was quite humbled
to get it, I didn’t expect it but it’s nice to be acknowledged in front of friends, family and the community. It was a real honour.” Life Education Trust teaches healthy choices to around 5000 school kids in Nelson and Tasman every year. It is invited into schools and employs a full time educator operating out of a mobile classroom and uses its mascot Harold the Giraffe. It teaches children aged from four to 13 about their body, food and nutrition, self-esteem, social relationships and the dangers of drugs. There are 36 trusts in regions throughout New Zealand and Nelson was the 33rd to be established.

Because we are not government funded we need to raise the money from the community and it takes around $80,000 a year to maintain it so that is always a challenge but I believe in it and seeing how it worked drove me to make it work in Nelson.” The mobile classroom now has a full schedule each year and Chris says the thrill of watching the programme work is what continues to drive his involvement. “I love it, I love seeing the kids' smiling faces when they come out after they’ve gone in with drawn faces. It makes a difference and I love that. Sometimes it’s hard tapping on the doors of businesses, especially in these economic times but you have to persevere, if you don’t persevere you fall off the planet. We have to run it as a business so we make sure we remain liquid.” He says he is keen to continue in the trust and is still getting over the shock of the award. Marg says the award was richly deserved. "It was fitting to have our patrons Roy and Renate Savage hosting our sponsors dinner and available to present the award. We are a small trust but solid and very fortunate to have the experience of Chris and our patrons to keep us going in the right direction."

Habitat home owners reach milestone
Kim and Daniel Maddock with a completion certificate with Rob Silcock, Rose Round and Julian Shields of Habitat for Humanity. Photo: Andrew Board.
Five years ago Kim and Daniel Maddock and their seven children were given a chance to own their own home – last week they shook hands with Habitat for Humanity for the last time and can happily say it’s all theirs. Habitat for Humanity Nelson built the Maddock’s home in 2007 with the family putting in a certain number of hours to make it possible. The family then rented the property for five years and now the rent that they have paid is able to be used as a deposit to purchase the property. Kim says the whole process has been quite overwhelming. “When we moved in it was emotional, we all cried. Once everything was set up we looked around the said ‘this is ours,

When we get to this stage we can now plan ahead and get onto the next one.” Kim says the programme gave them an opportunity to get into the housing market that they would not have had otherwise. “It’s a great feeling, it’s something we can leave for the kids, it’s our investment now.”

hoSpiTAl filTErS fiTTED: Nelson Hospital boiler house chimney now has filters fitted that will bring the air emissions to within regulations. The filters and baghouse were fitted to the chimney last week. The system is being thoroughly tested before being commissioned. The boiler house generates steam for essential services such as sterilisation and heats water from both coal and land fill gas energy sources. Land fill gas provides 65 per cent of the energy needed, with coal making up the balance. The boiler house was found to breach emission regulations last year.

Students up for theatre sports It is risky. It involves public exposure. Teenagers are prompted to act without thinking and all of this is entirely encouraged. It is the Nelson high school theatresports competition and this year a record number of teams will take the stage to entertain, woo and win over the crowd and, more importantly, the judges. Teams of four or five take to the stage and create theatrical scenes on the spot. It is all made up in front of the audience's eyes. Statistics tell us that public speaking is the general population's number one fear, it even outranks dying. Now, imagine public speaking without a script. These brave young people have willingly chosen to put themselves in this position and the results are often hilarious and the competition is a display of talent and imagination that is truly inspiring. And the competition is stiff. Last year, Motueka
High School's senior team threw the cat in with the pigeons when they bested the Nelson College team during a tie-breaker round of 'questions only'. The Nelson Theatresports Coordinator, Daniel Allan, has worked for Christchurch's Court Theatre for the past 10 years, most frequently as part of The Court Jesters, a professional improvisation troupe. Daniel will be the official MC for the competition and has been tutoring the school teams over the past few months. He is especially excited by the addition of Golden Bay High School to the senior competition this year. The Nelson Theatresports Competition rounds are Thursday August 2 (junior) and Friday August 3 (senior) at 7pm at the Suter Theatre. Tickets are $7.50. Limited door sales available, cash only. Check out www.bodyinspace.co.nz for more information.
Stoke School students George Davis and Isaac Ula, both 8, with Ryan Thach and Kasper Saengthian-Ngam, both 7, were among many students who witnessed a hot air balloon demonstration at school last week. The hot air balloon was brought to Nelson by Remax and was also shown to Hampden St and Auckland Point Schools. This particular hot air balloon usually flies at 1000 to 2000 ft. It is large enough to fit 90,000 basketballs inside and is one of just 72 hot air balloons in New Zealand. Because of windy conditions it did not fly in Nelson. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
SHOWTIME: Garin College students Caitlin Corish, Zerek Wentzell, Ellie McDonald, Alexei D’Ath, Jake Robinson, Abraham Corban-Banks, Hamish McIntosh and Keeli Ferris will be competing at the Nelson Theatresports Competition 2012 at the Suter Theatre this week. Fords of all shapes gather for founder's birthday Fords of all shapes and sizes gathered at Rabbit Island on Sunday to celebrate the late Henry Ford's birthday. From the Mapua Volunteer Brigade's 1943 Ford V8 fire truck to a 1976 Gran Torino, there were plenty of Fords grabbing the attention of the hundreds of car lovers that spent the afternoon celebrating the legacy of the Ford Motor Company founder. The owner of the the 1976 Gran Torino, Stoke's Jeff Welch, says the car was restored to replicate the same vehicle made famous by American cop thriller Starsky and Hutch. "As I kid I always watched Starsky and Hutch and always liked the Gran Torino look," he says. "I think I'm just a big kid at heart. Watching the show and then the movie that came out a few years ago, which to me was nonsense but still had the car in it. I just like the look of it; the grill and the headlights." When the latest remake of the film was released, it sparked interest in finding a replica on the internet. Jeff says the initial purchase from a seller in Michigan was "quite cheap", with most of the cost coming from the restoration process. "The restoration ended up costing me more than it's worth. That cost me several thousand dollars, several tens of thousands of dollars." Each year the Nelson Classic Ford Car Club hosts a birthday celebration for Henry Ford and this year attracted around 100 cars, despite poor weather. Jeff Welch with his 1976 Ford Gran Torino at the Nelson Classic Ford Car Club's celebratory day for Henry Ford at Henry Ford was born on July 30, 1863. He died in 1947 Rabbit Island on Sunday. Nelson author soaring high on Amazon When Nelson mum-of-two and now author started penning the novel that is now flying off the digital shelves at Amazon, she had no idea her book would be rubbing shoulders with "Fifty Shades of Grey". That’s exactly what’s happening right now on Amazon.com though. The Nelson author is Becky Siame, and she’s still pinching herself as she watches the download statistics sail further north with each minute on Amazon.com. “I wrote the book, "The Lighter Side of Large" over a period of seven months back in 2011, and never in my wildest dreams expected so many people to download it,” says Becky. “Right now it’s currently at 23,300 downloads on Amazon and it’s still going up.” It’s all thanks to an idea Becky had to launch her book as an e-book for instant download. For a
period of 3 days, she decided to make it available for free download on Amazon. “The idea was to get people to read the book for themselves, get excited about it and tell everybody they know about it,” says Becky. “And now with my book ranking fifth on Amazon, we’re within sights of "Fifty Shades of Grey", which is at number one and taking the world by storm.” Not bad for a new writer, who decided to write a book very loosely based upon her own life experience as a bi-racial single mum, who overcame weight issues and the stress of a broken marriage. "The Lighter Side of Large" is a lighthearted read which explores the ridicule, relationships and romance faced by Bella White; a half-Samoan, half-white New Zealander who hides behind 55kg of excess weight from the world, men and her potential.

Parents put in long hours for annual show
The cast of 35 parents, teachers and board of trustee members have each put in an estimated 140 groovy hours of practice ahead of next month’s fundraising show, The Love Bus. New dog bylaw open for public feedback Consultation opened last week for public feedback on Nelson City Council’s new draft dog control policy and bylaw after the orignial was ditched due to a public backlash. Deputy mayor Ali Boswijk says the new proposal allows, in most places, dog owners to choose whether to have their dogs on or off lead, provided they ensure their dogs are under control at all times. Stricter controls remain in place for other sensitive areas such as children’s playgrounds, shopping centres, and reserves with significant recreation and conservation values. The proposal replaces an earlier draft dog control policy and bylaw, which attrached huge attention, including a protest march down Trafalgar St. “We received overwhelming feedback from 700 submitters with the message loud and clear that they wanted to exercise dogs off lead as much as possible. This new proposal reflects that feedback,” says Ms Boswijk. Further information about the new proposal is available on the council website, at the customer service centre and Nelson libraries. The consultation is open for four weeks until 27 August.

I am looking for a long lost friend from the 1960s. I have tried many avenues to locate her to no avail. This lady’s name is Janet Bruce (nee Waters) who came from the Richmond area of Nelson. She may have re-married, re-located etc. Her family were like a family for me when I went to school in the area during the above mentioned time. I would be grateful if you were to find her for me please. With many thanks, Millie Taueki. The expensive process with a consent sought by Nelson council to hold 71 outdoor events each summer with double or more the previous noise limits is flawed.
19
The council has used the resource consent process, when in fact a plan change process is the appropriate one. Most of the events under the consent are to occur on sites that will adversely affect the Wood, Nelson East, and the area above the Cathedral. The consent will significantly reduce the amenity of these residential areas. These areas are entitled to the same amenity as other residential areas of Nelson, unless council undertakes a plan change that would alter their status. Nelsonians must not allow the council to take away their legal entitlements through an improper process. If this consent is approved, it must be appealed in the environment court. Not one submitter supported council’s proposal. The council is opposing the will of the community and has incurred hundreds of thousands of dollars in consultant and legal costs through this flawed process. Dan McGuire, Nelson.

Horticulture award goes back to Hoddy’s Hoddy’s Orchard has scooped the New Zealand Young Fruit Grower of the Year award twice in as many years. Jos Bell was announced winner of the national award in Auckland last week, following workmate Kevin Withington’s win in 2011. “It was a huge thrill to sit there and have my name called out,” says Jos. The national competition was “very similar” to the regional final, which saw contestants being tested on practical and business areas of the industry. “It was a big step up in terms of what you had to do.” Jos also won the Ballance Leadership award. that section he had to answer questions from the floor in a panel format. That was concluded by a speech to 400 people. Jos has been in the horticulture industry for eight years but still considers himself as s young grower. The official cutoff age for the competition is 30 years old. Currently working with quality assurance over the packing season, Jos hopes to one day move into a management role. “I’ve still got a long way to go in the industry. These days the companies and organisations are getting bigger so it’s not so much ownership but I’d like to move into management, quality assurance management, that sort of thing.” Because it is an industry award, the title shows he is doing his job well, which was humbling, says Jos. “It’s a huge boost for Hoddy’s. I can’t speak highly enough of my employers and they’ve backed me the whole way.” Kevin had given Jos plenty of encouragement leading up to the final. “It was great having him supporting me.” Jos was back at work on Monday, $2000 richer for his efforts.

Strong crowds turn out for cat show
A showcase of the country's top cats clawed its way back into Hope on Sunday. The annual cat show hosted by the Nelson Cat Club returned to the Hope Community Centre following previous stints at the Trafalgar Centre. Around 149 furry felines were entered in the event with contestants bringing their cats from all over the country. The cats were examined by judges from as far away as Finland. Nelson Cat Club treasurer Barbara Beatson was pleased with the turnout, saying the number of contestants was above recent years, although overall the figures had dropped since the event's early years. "We were rapt with the turnout we've got here. It's on a par or slightly better than what we've had in the past two years," she says. Competition cats have to comply with a standard before being accepted into events such as the Nelson Cat Show. Cats were judged by six different judges in a number of Diane Gaskin with her blue sphynx at the Nelson Cat different categories. The winner of the best long haired cat Show held in Hope on Sunday. at the show went to Barbara Beatson’s persian.

Community classes inspire Community classes are giving Nelsonians the chance to learn new skills in a fun and supportive way. Classes include cooking, communication and art, with professional and helpful tutors. Courses are held every few weeks at Nayland College, with recent classes including frame making and mosaics. The framing class, led by Lance Trolle, gave the participants a chance to learn a new skill but also display their own art, or treasures they had collected over the years, in an attractive and very personal way.
Lance says some aspiring artists and photographers even framed their own work in class as a way to keep their costs down, while others had collected artifacts on holidays decades ago that they wanted to frame. The classes are stand-alone, meaning you don't have to have gone to a class before to come along and join in. Classes coming up include a cooking course led by renowned local chef Miles Drewery. Check the website, www.comed.nayland.school.nz for more info and to see courses that are coming up.

Street cars steal the show A family van stole the show at Sunday’s Quail Valley Autocross. Street cars were welcomed with open arms for the first autocross event of the Nelson Car Club’s rally calendar and the inclement weather played into their hands. Ethan Curtis took a Toyota Estima van around the course to clock a surprisingly fast 44.960 seconds, taking top spot in Class D and overall, ahead of actual rally cars. His time was more than two seconds ahead of his nearest competitor, his father Adrian Curtis. Adrian finished the farm course in 47.100 seconds in his Honda CRX. Both Ethan and Adrian are top drivers, having won many national autocross titles. But the pair shared roles in the Estima because of its ability on the muddy track. Adrian clocked an unofficial time of 41.600 seconds when he took the wheel of the family van. Colin Harvey, also driving a Honda CRX, was second in Class B and third over-
Country wins first origin game Game one of the Town v Country rugby league origin series was played at Trafalgar Park on Sunday with Country taking the win as it aims to avenge its series loss from last year. Country, featuring players from Wanderers and Richmond, stormed out to an early lead before the Town team, made up of players from Tahuna and Stoke, made a strong comeback just before half
time. Country was too strong in the second half though and went on to win the game 36-26. The second match of the series, which is also used as trials for the Tasman Titans representative team, will be played at Brightwater this Saturday. all. He clocked 47.800 seconds. Morgan Pritchard won Class C in a time of 53.140 seconds while Nick Sands took out Class A in a time of 1 minute 6.620 seconds. Nick was 12th overall. The track had to be shortened because of boggy conditions. Nick, who also organised the event, says participation numbers had doubled since advertising the event in the Nelson Weekly. “We had a really good response from the previous article. There were a lot of spectators as well. It’s been years since we’ve had 30 plus entries to any event so we were really happy with the response.” The next event is a gravel hill climb on Tunnel Rd in the Spooners Range. It will be held on August 19. Another two autocrosses are being targeted for the summer and it will again be open to street cars. For further information visit www.nelsoncarclub.co.nz

College star back after unlucky break Phillip Rollo Steve Soper hoped 2012 would be the year he got his lucky break. However, it was an unlucky break that nearly ended it all together. The Richmond flanker has been an integral part of the Nelson College first XV since making the switch from Waimea College a couple of years ago. In his final Press Cup season, Steve was hoping to force his way into the New Zealand Secondary Schools squad, following training camps with the New Zealand Under-17 last year and a role with the South Island Secondary Schools team in 2011. But his 2012 campaign hit a massive hurdle when he broke his tibia and fibula during a Tasman Makos rugby sevens trial in January. “I got jumped on from behind and fell over. It was just an awkward angle. There was just a big bang and it was sticking out to the side,” he explains on the nasty injury. "I knew this was going to be a big year. I guess now it’s not the same goals I had but it’s more about just playing. Anything else would be a bonus," he says. Steve managed 30 minutes in the first Section 1 game against Roncalli College, a week prior to the school holidays, and was happy with his performance. “It was good. It’s been a long wait. It’s not 100 per cent but I can play okay with it.” The Section 1 of the Press Cup features the top eight teams, with Nelson College sitting in third behind leaders Christchurch Boys’ High School and St Bede’s College. Steve has returned at the right time of the year, but says the league is more competitive this year and that Nelson will have to fight hard for a final spot. “Those schools that haven’t really stood out before are doing pretty well like obviously Roncalli. Marlborough [Boys College] is having a good year. There’s a good standard this year. It would’ve been good to play some easier teams to test the leg out but

it is how it is.” He still has a slight limp so is unable to fully utilise his speed. Having spent his first season in the Press Cup on the wing for Waimea College, his speed around the field is one of his most dangerous assets. With representative trials being held earlier this month, Steve was hopeful he could continue his season after the Press Cup. Whether or not he will have a chance to wear a black jersey remains to be seen. “The next section of the

[New Zealand secondary] schools camp gets named soon so I’ll see whether I get named or not," he says. Steve has not committed to a senior club for the Car Company division one competition next year, but wants to push a spot in the Tasman Makos in years to come. “I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing, training hard and doing all of the right things." Steve will next play in the quadrangular tournament in Christchurch this week.

Nelson dog sledders off to Hanmer comp A small but passionate group of Nelson dog sled racers is heading to Hanmer Springs this weekend to race against the best in the South Island. Every Saturday and Sunday morning during the winter months a group of around a dozen racers head to Rabbit Island to race
husky dogs around a 5km track. But instead of the traditional snow sleds, the Nelson racers use modified bicycles to stand on and work their dogs. Racer Andy Cooke says they hope to form an official club soon and grow the number of people who race, after starting with just
a couple of people. “Quite a few of us are doing it now. If we see people with huskies on the side of the road we will jump out of the car and say ‘Fancy doing something different with your dog?’ That’s where a lot of these people come from.” He says being pulled by dogs is an “adren-
aline rush” but most of them enjoy it because it’s something they can do with their dogs and it’s plenty of fun. Andy says the dogs get so excited before a race they howl, bark and jump around but not all of the dogs that race are huskies. “It doesn’t have to be a husky. If your dog likes to run, likes to pull, wants a bit of exercise and you want to do something different, with your dog, then you should give it a go.” Fourteen racers will head south for this weekend’s event and Andy says he would like to see Nelson host one of its own in the future. “We are on the verge of getting a club together, waiting for some stuff to come through now and eventually we’d like to get an event here. There are events throughout the South Island and we’d like to add Nelson to that.” If you are interested in giving dog sled racing a go give Andy a call on 022 0357 628 or Andy Leach a call on 021 757 451.

Football rivalry goes down to the wire Phillip Rollo

Got a Sport Story?
A wonder goal from midfielder Willow Milligan has handed Nayland College a 2-1 win over Nelson College, guaranteeing the side a spot at the Lotto Premier New Zealand Football Championship. The match, the first to be played at the Nelson College front field in more than 20 years and only the second of all time, was played in honour of Nelson College first XI manager Jill Heath. Jill's legacy and contribution to the school will now be immortalized in the form of a football trophy contested by the region's two top high schools. Striker Lency Norman opened the scoring for Nayland but most its best work came from defenders Josh Sansom and Izaak Cunningham. The pair did well to break down any attacking play by the home

side while Sam Maxwell and Willow were strong in the middle of the park. Phillip Tunepa equalized from the penalty spot after he was ruled to have been taken down by Nayland right back Fletcher Slierendrecht. But the scores didn't stay tied for long, with Willow scoring a stunning goal from a free kick, the ball sailing over the arms over Nelson 'keeper Kevin Choi. The result was put beyond doubt when Nelson substitute Ben Abele Jacksties was shown a red card for his second bookable offence. Nayland will now contest the top 16 section of the national championship, which is set to be held at Saxton Field during September. Nayland's best placing was runner up in the 2010 competition. Nelson will rely on a wildcard spot if it hopes to contest its fifth placing from last year.

Andrew Martin still king among the brave paddlers Ken Page Paddlers from the Tasman Bay Kayak Racing Club optimistically sought warmer conditions on Sundays mid-winter kayak race held at Tahunanui beach. However weather gods had different ideas and paddlers were greeted with bleak overcast conditions and winds as a front passed onto the region causing paddlers to wrap up and pack away the sunscreen. Club stalwart Andrew Martin set a course around Haulashore Island that would not only see him win the race and stamp his mark early in the season but help him celebrate his 50th birthday confirming his dominance in the sport within the Nelson region. But the win was no walk in the park as he was pushed hard by international adventure racer Trevor Voyce
and kayak specialists Sam Dillon and Reid Forrest - the trailing trios average age decades his junior. Competition was also stiff mid-field despite the race touted as a midwinter friendly designed to blow out the cobwebs. Martin offered those who hadn’t paddled during winter a pre-race time bonus as encouragement but notions of advantage went out the window as paddlers battled each other in unsettled water for line honours as they shouldered their skis and ran up the beach to the finish line before quickly seeking respite from the chilling 12 degree water. Top ten results: 1 Andrew Martin, 2 Trevor Voyce, 3 Sam Dillon, 4 Reid Forrest, 5 Kim Hogarth, 6 Wayne Jones, 7 Saaki Meyer, 8 Ken Page, 9 Max Riley, 10 Paul Morris.

READY TO SUPPORT: Nelson businessman Paul Brockie is helping organise a group of Phoenix football supporters from Nelson to travel to the capital for the team's first home game of the season in October. Photo: Andrew Board.
Phoenix supporters put together package for Nelson fans When All White star Jeremy Brockie strides out for his first home game as a Wellington Phoenix player this October the term “home crowd” will be more relevant for him than most. Jeremy’s dad Paul, along with other Nelson supporters of the Phoenix, have put together a package for Nelson fans to travel to the Phoenix’s first home game this season, which will double as Jeremy’s first game in Wellington as a Phoenix player. The package will see a mass group of Nelsonians heading to the capital for a Saturday evening game, all sitting in a block and with matching t-shirts. Paul says he hopes to create a real atmosphere and occasion for Nelson fans. The package will be totally flexible, meaning people can join whatever parts they want without having to pay for the bits they don’t want. The basic package costs $300. “We’ve just sort of drafted up something which
includes a bus to Picton, ferry, match ticket, accommodation and t-shirt. But people can come and go, for example I’ll be flying over and I’m sure a few others will want to do that as well and some of the other guys are staying with friends instead of our accommodation.” Paul is also working on other extras including breakfast with some of the Phoenix players the next morning, drink discounts and a visit to the new Sprig & Fern in Wellington. “We’re working in with Yellow Fever and we will all sit in one area and hopefully get some signs along as well so it will be a real atmosphere of Nelsonians really going for it,” says Paul. If successful, Paul says they may organise more trips to games throughout the season. The trip will be on October 6, with kickoff that night at 7.30pm. Jacks Navy Community Events hold onto win
Nelson Weekly Your Community Newspaper
Keeping you in touch
It was definitely a game of two halves when Jacks Navy met Stoke Richards Woodhouse in the first game of the Grade 3 Championship Round played at Saxton Stadium. The first half belonged totally to Jacks, while the second was Stoke’s. If there had been an extra period Stoke may have just sneaked up for the win, as Jacks looked as if they may have been running low on gas. Jacks hit the ground running, and with shooters Sheila Hunter and Jenny Coles finding their rhythm early they raced out to a handy 12-5 lead. Stoke looked more competitive once it found its groove and settled in the second quarter, however unforced errors (stepping in the main) proved to be costly. Stoke closed the gap to 12- 20 at the major break. Stoke lifted the bar further in the third quarter to outscore Jacks 10- 5 as shooters Bobbie Hutton and Georgia Wright found their target. Georgia displayed nice movement in the circle and netted some impressive long shots. Tania Popata’s positional change to goal defence had immediate effect as she pressured the Jacks shooters. Tania pulled in three well timed intercepts and had good body position to gather in the rebounds and she struck up an effective understanding with keeper Claire Hodgman. Karen Vanderberg worked well off the line while Jamie Kingi was useful through the mid court. One would be forgiven for thinking that the final quarter was played outside in the wind when only eight goals were scored – five to Stoke and three to Jacks. There was a fair amount of turnover ball that was not always converted. Jacks played a short game in the final few minutes as they worked to retain possession to score the matching winning goal. The final score, 2827. Jacks centre, Vicki Reid was a steady link through court and was forever patient on the feed particularly to the very accurate goal shoot, Sheila Hunter. Defenders Sally Paki Paki and Jan Willocks were a formidable pairing. Sally the evergreen wise head, while Jan always looked long for the feed to her offensive line.
