Crime drops in Nelson A significant drop in the number of sexual assaults and theft in Nelson Bays has highlighted an overall decrease in crime, according to the latest crime statistics released by Tasman police yesterday. The stats showed an overall drop of 3.6 per cent in Tasman, which covers Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast. There were 623 fewer offences recorded in 2011 than during the previous calendar year, with 16,695 offences recorded between 1 January 2011 and 31 December 2011. This is the lowest recorded figure for Tasman since 2007. Tasman district commander superintendent Richard Chambers says he was very encouraged by the results. “What it shows me is that we are on the right track

with our focus on the frontline and with the work being done with communities and other agencies to prevent crime from happening in the first place,” he says. The crime resolution rate for Tasman sits at 59.7 per cent, more than 10 per cent above the national average of 47 per cent. Marlborough recorded the highest crime resolution rate in the District at 62.1 per cent Nelson Bays had a 15 per cent reduction in theft and a 32 per cent reduction in sexual assaults. Richard says there had been a 21.4 per cent increase in drug related offences, which reflected the proactive work police were doing in detecting that type of offending. “We have resolved 92.3 percent of that drug offending which is a fantastic result.”

MP finds support back home

It’s a doggy dog world FROM PAGE 1 The entertainment wasn’t restricted to four legs, with Yozo the clown delighting with balloon animal creations, face painting, sausage sizzle and a jumping castle, supervised by Scooby-Doo, among the attractions on the mild autumn day. Close to 160 dogs registered for the event, Donna Walzl was “really pleased” with the turnout. “Every year it just grows in momentum; it gets bigger and more popular, more dogs.” Overall, the dogs were remarkably well behaved, says Donna. The event went off “without a hitch,”

with dogs big and small happily interacting and enjoying the day out with their kind. The event, now in its sixth year, is an opportunity for dogs to socialise and owners to meet with other dog lovers. “It’s just a fun thing; it’s nothing serious. We just really do it for a fun day out for the dogs. There aren’t many things you can go along to and take your dog, so we think it’s pretty cool,” says Donna. The event raised $3000, which will go towards the SPCA’s ongoing efforts to improve the lives of stray and abandoned animals, with plans for a new shed and small animal enclosure.

35 years at Stoke School set to end NEWS IN BRIEF

Andrew Board

NZ QUARTET COMING TO NELSON: New Zealand’s foremost chamber ensemble, the New Zealand String Quartet, celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2012 with a 13-concert nationwide Chamber Music New Zealand tour, performing in Nelson in May. The New Zealand String Quartet performs BEETHOVEN! Revolution at Nelson School of Music on Friday 4 May.

As Pam Robinson’s three boys left kindergarten and entered Stoke School she, like many other mothers, got involved, helping in the library and around the classrooms. But as they left she stayed, helping generations of Stoke School students and parents in various roles, including her latest as office manager. But this Thursday, the last day of the school term, Pam will walk out the school gates for the final time. She is retiring after 35 years of service at the school. Stoke students held a special assembly for her last Friday where each year group gave her a bunch of flowers and a guard of honour was made from hockey sticks for her to recognise her passion for the sport. Then later in the evening, teachers, past principals, parents and current staff gathered to say farewell. Pam says it will be strange leaving the school after so long and it has changed a lot over the years. “It evolves as time goes on and there are a lot of areas where I worked that are now gone like the deaf unit. But the kids are still the same.” Pam started work at the school in the library, then worked in classrooms and finally the office over her career. Principal Pete Mitchener says Pam has been an invaluable staff member and she will be greatly missed. “It will be a huge change for the school, her wealth

Photo: Andrew Board. of knowledge and her ability to always put the children first despite working on plenty of other things will be hard to replace,” he says. Pam says there have been plenty of highs and lows at the school over the years, with the death of students and staff the lowest, and students going on to do “great things”, the highlights. She says the school feels like home to her and she believes it is a “great” school and a great hub for the community. “If I had to sum up Stoke School in a word I would say it’s egalitarian. Everyone is

equal and that’s nice. Everyone feels comfortable here.” Pam has survived four principals, five caretakers, dozens of teachers and thousands of students. She says she will miss the staff and the children the most but is looking forward to enjoying her retirement. “I used to play badminton a bit so I’ll go back down to see if all of those skills have been lost. I’ll also go cycling, play a bit of golf, do some art stuff and I’ll have plenty of grandkids and relatives to look after and visit,” she says.

CLEAN UP MOVES ON: While the successful gravel clean up project continues in Poorman Stream, work also began in Brook Stream yesterday. The first stretch of the stream to be cleared is between Domett and Nile Sts so residents can expect to see machinery around the stream and should be aware of more trucks on neighbouring streets. The work to remove the gravel buildup left by the December storm will follow the same approved pattern. Firstly the fish are humanely caught and relocated and water is diverted so contractors can work in a dry stream bed. Once the excess gravel is cleared the stream bed is groomed to make a better habitat for fish and the water is returned.

One of two new entrances being built at Saxton Field. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

New entrances for Saxton Saxton Field will be getting two more entrance roads, enabling easier access to and from Richmond. Construction on the first of the two roads, off Main Rd Stoke, began last week. The second new entrance will be off Champion Rd, past Garin College, although that is still in its design stages. The Main Rd Stoke entrance road will cost approximately $850,000 and is jointly funded by both the Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council, with NCC supplying 60 per cent of the funding. Saxton Field currently has two entrances, both situated on Saxton Rd. The new entrance will be closer to the cricket oval, athletics track and a potential cycle velodrome. Nelson City Council principal adviser of reserves

and community facilities Andrew Petheram says both entrances were in the long term concept design for Saxton Field. A request for funding for the Champion Rd entrance will be submitted in NCC’s Long Term Plan. He says the news will be pleasing for everyone that uses what is now Nelson’s busiest sporting facility. “It’s got to the point where the use of Saxton Field is incredibly busy, particularly on a Saturday morning. We need to have better access, particularly for the people coming from the south,” says Andrew. “It will take a lot of pressure off Saxton Rd.” The first road is expected to be completed in three months time. The internal pathways inside Saxton Field will also be having work done, connecting the facility for pedestrians and cyclists.

The cousin of a Richmond tramper found dead in Mt Richmond Forest Park in December is organising a variety showcase to fundraise for the people that brought his body back to his family. Sammi Abbott, 18, was driving home from her cousin Sharny Abbott’s funeral when she heard his favourite song on the radio. Her immediate response was to dance to the song, inspiring a variety show that will donate all its proceeds to Land Search and Rescue. The variety show will feature musical acts, dancing performances, Kapa Haka groups and is being hosted by Murray Leaning. The showcase is being held at the Waimea College Hall on April 28 from 7pm. Tickets can be booked by calling 542 2299 or 027 544 7745. Sammi says the night will not be a memorial for Sharny, but a “thank you” to Land Search and Rescue. “We were told there was a very good chance we would have never got my cousin’s body back. Search and Rescue put so much effort into looking for him and it touched me and made me realise the amount of work they do,” she says. “I just wanted to do something for all their hard work they do, not only for my Sammi Abbott. family but for everybody.” Sharny, a 23 year old from Richmond, died tramping in early December last year. It is believed he lost his footing during a river crossing, drowing in the Hackett Stream. Sammi says she was really close with Sharny. “He was an amazing person and one of the nicest people you would have ever met. This isn’t a memorial for Sharny, but it’s because of him that I’m doing this.” Sammi hopes to sell 800 tickets to the fundraiser. Tickets cost $5 and $2 raffles will be sold at the door. There will be door sales for the remaining tickets. All of the acts for the show have been confirmed.

Richmond Mall dishes out $10K for local charities The Richmond Mall, along with motorcyclists from around the region, donated $10,000 to local charities last week. The Richmond Mall Foundation hosted the Ride for Hope motorcycle ride in February which saw around 200 motorcyclists from around the region ride from the Trafalgar Centre in Nelson to Motueka and back to the Hope Domain. The ride raised more than $5000, which the owners of Richmond Mall then matched dollar for dollar to give to local charities or disadvantaged people in the community. Mall manager David Hill says the two cheques, for $5000 each, were handed over to the Nelson Hospice Trust and the Nelson

Marlborough Helicopter Trust last week. “It’s really exciting to be able to do this part. Obviously there are a lot of people in the community that helped raise the money by donating and helping organise the event but being able to give it back to community groups that really deserve it is fantastic.” Paula Muddle from the helicopter trust says she was “blown away” with the donation. “This is fantastic, really awesome. Without this sort of funding we wouldn’t be here so we are extremely grateful.” Pat Curry, CEO of the Nelson Hospice Trust, says the money will go to good use at the hospice. “We will use this money to make people’s lives better so this is absolutely fantastic.” David says Steve Page, publisher of Nelson Weekly and Route 6 club member, was on hand as a major supporter of the foundation and organiser of the Ride for Hope. The foundation has given 23 grants to disadvantaged people in the community on top of last week’s donations.

Sweet gala for Tahunanui School Tahuna School attracted a positive stampede of gala-goers for their fundraiser, with bouncy castles, plate smashing and the school’s own waterslide proving very popular for the several thousand who crowded the school grounds. There was even the chance to dunk people in the school’s newly completed, solar heated pool, by hitting a target. Students from the senior grades had set up stalls, happy to help raise funds for the pro-

posed upgrades to the pool. Organisers were thrilled with the turnout, saying it greatly helped the fundraising efforts. “We’ve got the most magnificent swimming pool in any primary school in New Zealand. Now we’re looking at landscaping this area with shade cloths and upgrading the changing rooms to make it even better,” says Lee Corlett, event convenor. The gala raised an estimated $20,000 for the school.

The magic of Meccano will be on show and while younger people may not know too much about the construction toy, it may bring back a few memories for many dads and grandads. Meccano is a metal set of plates and fittings that can be joined together to make anything in the maker’s imagination. The toy was popular in the middle of last century but was overtaken by the likes of Lego.

There is a strong following of people with the old sets and Atawhai enthusist David Couch says the Meccano Magic Exhibition at the Stoke Memorial Hall this Easter weekend will have some of the best displays in the country. “Kids love it and a lot of older men remember having their own set and what they made so it’s a show for young and old.” The show is being held this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Proposal to treasure Each week leading up to the Nelson Wedding Show in early May Nelson Weekly is printing the nine finalists of the Jens Hansen Love Story competition. This week we have Shannon and Lisa’s story. It was just another Friday, except that I was off to the beach with a friend after work. Normally I would go straight home, go upstairs and get changed as my poor boyfriend would have been expecting. At the last minute before going to the beach, I decided to pop up to my bedroom to pick up my ipod... thank goodness or I would have missed the whole thing! In my room, there were flowers and chocolates on the bed, and an envelope with “Lisa” on the front. I was about to be led on a ‘treasure hunt’ I would never forget. In the envelope I found money and a note, instructing me to go to the place where we decided to be m o r e t h a n ‘just

friends’. I knew that would be our old flat, so I went there, and found another clue hidden in the mailbox, telling me to hop on a bus from the other side of town. I made it to the bus and then set about my next clue, which led me to the wind turbine, which Shan loves as it is has an amazing view. Attached to the next clue was a plane ticket with the destination blacked out! I waited until the plane began to descend before I gave in to the temptation to open the next clue! It led me to a hotel, where I found an array of the most beautiful dresses on the bed and the final clue, telling me to walk down to the beach. Then it hit me - the bridesmaid dresses, the roses, the chocolates, the treasure hunt, and our favourite places...So I walked down the deserted beach under a full moon and found him. There he was, on one knee with the prettiest ring in the whole world and a picnic set out with wine, mussels, cheese, crackers, the lot…and he asked me to marry him in our favourite place. We then got to spend the entire weekend together as Shan had secretly organised to get it off work for me! And as we relaxed on the beach the next day two stunt planes did a love heart in the sky!

In the early 1900s Sam Kirkpatrick employed dozens of Nelsonians and lived like a king with a view of the entire city from his spectacular Mount St home. It’s a home with an incredible history, used as boarding home for Nelson College for Girls students for decades and in the 1990s as a backpackers. Sam’s legacy is in fact still alive and well, this year alone $120,000 was administered from a trust he left in the hands of the Masons for a Kirkpatrick scholarship for ten NCG students. But the building that housed one of the city’s great philanthropists, hundreds of students and even more backpackers is now in the hands of a local office manager and fire-fighter. They have started what they expect to be a ten year project to restore the home to its former glory, at every step paying respect to its first resident. “It’s Sam’s house, it may sound a bit cheesy but we feel that we are just caretakers for this home. Really, it belongs to Sam,” says Megan Savageau. “Sam” moved to New Zealand from Ireland where he founded Kirkpatrick Jam. The business was housed in a factory where New World Nelson is now and made Sam one of the city’s richest people. When Megan and partner Gavin Stott moved into the 700 square foot home last winter there was one running tap in the entire house, one working light and one working power point. Both the power point

and light were as far back in the house as it is possible to get. After one night together in the house, Megan spent the next two by herself as Gavin worked night shift. “I was in this massive house by myself with no light, no power, it was freezing cold and I was thinking ‘what the hell have we done?’” she says. Nine months on the couple have landscaped the front of the house, installed a kitchen, hot water cylinder, power and plumbing and they now have more than half of the house in liveable condition. They say progress will rely on budget constraints but they’ve already got so much out of the home. “We’ve had people come up to the house and tell us their stories of living in the house as a student. One lady remembered the rooms and told us the room we are living in was the ‘sick girl room’. She stayed there when she had scarlet fever. Another lady came up and said after living here for seven years she had never stepped foot in the matrons room. She never realised it had an en suite off it,” says Gavin. The couple hope to live in the four bedroom house for the rest of their lives but at the same time restore it as close as possible to the original building. They say they have had plenty of interest from passers-by and hope to hear more stories about the house from those that lived in it. If you have a story you’d like Gavin and Megan to hear please send an email to editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz.

diary

• Four container ships, four large fishing vessels, two car carriers (one was 200m long,30m wide and 30m high) (it was like driving a block of apartments on its side,) a fruit vessel that had been extended by 30m and its bridge raised a deck allowing it to carry more cargo, a tanker, the dredge was shifted from the main wharf to a layup berth for repairs, and the ice breaker that had been here from McMurdo Sound departed to resume work. • On Friday evening many vessels gathered at or around Wakefield Quay and the super yacht berth for a tourism display for Nelson Tourism. We hope something positive comes out of it for all commercial operators in the Nelson region. • Last Wednesday some exciting racing occurred on the final night of the summer series. The variable easterly winds made for some close calls and the two fleets remained close together. • Did you know that it is an offence to climb any form of navigational structure? All of our beacons are under camera surveillance. If for any reason the did not operate as expected we would be checking the cameras. Have a great, safe Easter. If in doubt - don’t go out, Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

Disc golf craze flying high at Isel Park The old adage says that golf is the perfect way to spoil a good walk. Well it seems a group of Nelsonians have discovered a whole new way to drive and putt their way to frustration and joy – with frisbees. Although played with weighted discs instead of clubs and balls, Disc Golf is similar to traditional golf in many ways. You can play a full round muttering under your breath about wayward drives and a cold putter – but all it takes is that one glorious shot to make it all worthwhile. Modern Disc Golf was started in the 1960s and is now played in about 40 different countries around the world. It’s even played professionally in Europe. The object of the game is to negotiate a course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws. The more passionate players have putters, mid range discs and drivers, all weighted and shaped for the specific type of distance and

accuracy they bring. Nelson has one of the more spectacular courses in New Zealand, nestled amongst the gardens and heritage trees of historic Isel Park in Stoke. Trees and under-par scores usually don’t go hand-in-hand however the course recorded is a pretty handy 10 under over the 18 hole course made up entirely of par 3’s. With support from the Nelson City Council, particularly councillor Ian Barker and horticultural supervisor Peter Grundy, the free public course has been fully marked and signposted. Alex Britton helped to design the course and says it is short but technical which is perfect for both beginners and experienced players. “The course is all mapped out, so anyone can bring their own beach frisbee and play for free. We see lots of families playing, which is just what we wanted,” says Alex. More info at www.discgolf.co.nz

with After a cold winter’s day, nothing beats coming home and relaxing in a warm house. AbsoluteEnergy can give you peace of mind that you’ll stay cosy this year, while dramatically reducing your heating bill, by installing top quality insulation to your new or existing home. Paul Brockie began AbsoluteEnergy a decade ago, and was a pioneer in the insulation industry in New Zealand. To celebrate 10 successful years, every quote for insulating an existing home that is accepted in April will go into the draw to win a $1000 Wilson’s Abel Tasman prize package. AbsoluteEnergy travels throughout Nelson and the upper south island to install insulation for new and existing homes, as well as commercial buildings. They carry a range of product options, including wool, polyester, foil and fibreglass, for roof, wall and underfloor insulation. For those looking to fit insulation into their existing home, a trained assessor will come to you and advise you of what energy efficient measures can be undertaken to keep you warm and save you money. If your house was built before 2000, you are eligible for a government subsidy of one third the total cost, capped at $1300. If you are looking to insulate a new building, the AbsoluteEnergy team works with the construction schedule to ensure quality and efficient installation to fit the desired timeline

Habitat finishes another home for another local family

In 2001 Bual Khar Hniang was forced to flee from his village in Myanmar leaving behind his pregnant wife and two young daughters. The first time he met his son was at Nelson Airport in 2008 when he was reunited with his family. After years of hard work and sweat equity Bual Khar and his young family now have a place to call home in Nelson. Twelve months ago the site in Tipahi Street was a bare and empty section and the transformation into a Habitat for Humanity family home was described as a “miracle” at the house dedication on Sunday. The Habitat project team led by Julian Shields and guided by Rob Silcock has worked hard from the planning to building stage and everything in between. Bual Khar’s extended family, the Chin community, workmates and church congregation have also put their shoulders to the wheel, work-

ing out their 450 hours sweat equity. All paid off as the family were welcomed into their new home by around 50 people involved in the project and were handed the keys by Julian in an triumphant but emotional moment. Habitat Nelson chairman Fred Coe says that everyone can be proud of the beautiful home they have worked to build, but for the family it “is a dream come true”. Habitat for Humanity in New Zealand is a not-for-profit Christian organisation that works in partnership with people of goodwill and families in housing need, to eliminate sub-standard housing by building, renovating and selling simple, decent houses on an affordable basis. Pete North, Habitat for Humanity NZ CEO, says that the Nelson Habitat group is top drawer completing 17 houses to date.

Gage fought Australian bantam weight champion and now Olympicbound Ibrahim Balla in the final of the Oceania qualifying tournament in Canberra last month after beating his Tongan opponent 28-10 in the semi-final. Gage fought with plenty of heart and passion says his coach Steve Mitchell. “The Aussies won 10 from 10 and were in camp at the Australian

Institute of Sport for seven weeks leading to this tournament. The boy Gage fought had had over 100 bouts, had been to the worlds and the Commonwealth Games, he had been boxing since the age of 10 and was 22 years old. In return Gage has been fighting for two and a half years, has had 19 bouts and is 18 years old, so all in all he did exactly what we had realistically set his goals at.” The coach at the event had big raps on Gage, stating that he is a really exciting prospect for the future of boxing in New Zealand.

Drum beats for siblings Phillip Rollo Playing touch rugby on the front lawn against her older brother may have paid dividends for Nicole Drummond. But the same could be said for him too. The brother and sister duo of Nicole and Mitchell Drummond headline a swag of Nelson touch rugby players selected to represent New Zealand throughout the year. Following the National Touch Rugby Junior Championship held in Nelson a fortnight ago, Touch New Zealand released the names for the men, women and mixed squads for New Zealand Open, Under-21, Under-19, Under-17 and Under-15 teams. Mitchell says it was a proud moment for the family having them both receive the call up. “I think the olds were pretty proud the other night when the names went up on the website,” he says. Both players have represented their country before, but have never been named on the same day. Nicole was selected in the New Zealand Under-17 women’s team and will compete against state sides in Australia in September.

Mitchell will play a test match against Australia in Auckland in February. Nicole was sweating on her selection following the junior nationals. “I thought I played crap. But I had been in there for the last two years, so they knew who I was, which was a bonus,” she says. Nicole will be playing netball and basketball during the winter, before returning to her rigorous touch rugby fitness regime. Mitchell didn’t attend a recent Under-19 national championship, but his play at the New Zealand Secondary School Touch Rugby Championship stuck in the selectors’ minds. As announced in the Nelson Weekly following the tournament, Nelson College for Girls star Rebecca Kersten was named in the New Zealand Touch Blacks Women. Other players selected to represent New Zealand are; Ellen Sharland – New Zealand Under-21 women, Michaela Matenga – New Zealand Under-19 women, Rosa Edwards and Ella Marwick – New Zealand Under-17 women, Claire Erasmus – New Zealand Under-15 women, Mitchell Hunt – New Zealand Under-17 men.

Women of Nelson, the time is now. Nelson Suburbs are looking for more players to play football this year and the good news is you don't need to have any experience playing football. Player Lisa De Gray says the club is hoping to have two teams in this year’s Saturday afternoon competition and new players will be given plenty of support, including top coaching. Lisa says playing women's football is plenty of fun and a great way to get fit and meet new people. "We have players of all ages and all sizes and it's a great competition because beginners to the sport don't feel out of place." The women's teams train once a week and play around the region on Saturdays. Those keen to find out more about the team or what is involved, visit the Nelson Suburbs website at www.nelson suburbs.co.nz and click on the women's link for contact details. The Suburbs men's third and fourth division teams are also looking for more players. So any guys out there keen to play social football should also visit the website for further information.

Stoke Cobras were at their rampaging best at Tahuna on Saturday as they heaped the hurt on an under strength Tahuna Tigers outfit that dropped their heads in the second-half. The Tigers finished the game with just 12 men on the park as the reigning premiers finished them off 72-6, but it could have been worse. A spectacular team try was disallowed and the scorer sent off because he didn’t have his mouth guard in, a more than fair call say Tasman Rugby

League. The first half was a comparative battle with Stoke’s physical edge in the centers, led by Phillip Asi, giving them a 26-6 half-time lead. The second stanza was highlighted by a five-try haul from Jamein Bristowe as the Cobras cutloose. In other results the Richmond Rabbits lost a tight battle away to the Wairau Taniwha 22-24 while the Wanderers Wolves mauled the undermanned Victory Vikings 60-22.

Packed field for 25th Kids on golf women’s triathlon One hundred and twenty first time competitors bought their enthusiasm and energy to a field of 370, creating an “electric” atmosphere for the 25th Taylors Nelson Women’s Triathlon. The Maitai Valley was filled with close to 1000 people as supporters, friends, family and work colleagues joined in to cheer on the smiling participants. The fun and relaxed sentiment was felt most keenly as those competing in tight lycra, gym gear or even pyjamas filed in front of the stage for a Jazzercise warm-up. As the Bee Gees hit “Staying Alive” sounded, everyone boogied down, complete with disco action moves. After the dust settled and the last competitor splashed out of Riverside Pool, Chelsea Beaton had taken the honours in the run section, followed by Carol Cooper and Mandy Stephens. With special mention to Oriane Guillaumot who got fifth overall competing in the Year 7-13

category. In the walker section, which contained many team entries including the Active Mums group and YMCA team, Wendy Healey came out on top. Although for the overwhelming majority the day was about challenging themselves. “It is a very special event for women, everyone competing achieves something different. It is something they can aspire to or move on from. When youve got three generations doing the event it’s pretty special,” says organiser Averil West. A special moment was reserved for Averil at the prize-giving, where the two-and-a-half decades of her achievements through leadership was recognised with a print of all the names of women who have competed at the event in the past. But Averil is still keen to look to the future. “I’ll continue to be involved and do what needs to be done to continue this awesome event,” she says.

Jonty Perrett, 8, lines up a shot at the Have a Go at golf evening at the Nelson Golf Course last week. The day is sponsored by the Halberg Trust and was supported by Westpac, Sport Tasman, Eagles Golfing Society and Tasman Golf. Fourteen kids took part in the event which sees them have a go at a new sport. Stoke first five Jacob Beleski attempts to avoid the tackle of Wanderers blindside Stoke division two player Ant Holder in action against Wanderers at Brightwater on flanker Dan Perrin. Saturday. Photos: Phillip Rollo.

Stoke get first taste of revamped Wanderers Phillip Rollo It was one of their golden wings which returned to haunt Accessman Stoke in their opening match of the new season. Sione Holani, now plying his trade in Brightwater with Taylor's Contracting Wanderers, put in a commanding display as the returning Car Company division one rugby side got off to a thunderous start. Wanderers claimed the victory at the Brightwater Domain on Saturday, in their first year back in the region's premier rugby competition since relegating themselves five years ago. Stoke lacked a certain punch in the backline, but the cool head of new boy Jacob Beleski was a welcome relief in the first five-eighth position, a spot that was tried

with at least three different players last year. The former Nayland College student kicked Stoke within four points of Wanderers after the break, following an earlier try to his opposite, Jesse Pitman. Sione scored after 55 minutes following a bustling effort. Nelson College's Jackson Harvey then stretched the lead out to 17-6 with the boot. With Tevita Koloamatangi on the sideline, the job up front was left to experienced campaigners Jarrod Aberhart, Ben Douglas, Stu Tunnicliff and Michael Tyler. While they didn't fare well at scrum time, the momentum started swinging Stoke's way late in the match and they regained some much needed possession. When Wanderers player-coach Daniel Perrin was sent to the bin for ten min-

utes, Stoke hit right back with a score of their own. Brenton Connell, playing in the midfield, capped off a well-worked backline move with only ten minutes to play. Jacob added two points from the conversion, bringing the margin to a meagre four points. Stoke were camped on the Wanderers five metre line as the clock ticked closer to 80 minutes, but an inability to break the tireless wall of the yellow and blue became costly and as soon as the ball was turned over at scrum time, yet again, the ref blew the final whistle, giving Wanderers a wellearned victory and Stoke plenty to work on in the coming week. The Stoke's division two team ran Wanderers close in the day's other match, but were left to rue missed opportunities in the

second half going down 29-26. Openside flanker Aaron Dempster put in a giant display while his partner in crime Benjamin Slierendrecht was also prominent on the blindside and scored in the first half. The young backs, with only one of the starting players older than 21, showed plenty of flair. Former USA international Anthony Holder stamped his mark on the game, coming off the bench to score in the second half. He featured strongly when playmaker Jacob Curtis went off with an injury, after impressing in the opening stages. An overlap out wide could have resulted in a late Stoke try when they took to the opposition line, but the decision to keep the ball in tight came at a cost when it was turned over in the next phase.

Boote is boss of the superstock track Craig Boote showed he really is boss, winning the open club superstock championship at the final meet of the speedway season. While much of the hype was on the War of the Wings, a pack of modifieds that headed north from all of the corners of the South Island, the local drivers in the superstocks made sure they weren’t forced out of the limelight, at the weekend’s double header. The Tahuna Beach Holiday Park

Speedway hadn’t been the most successful place for the 7n driver since returning to the track fulltime this year. But he made every corner a winner on Saturday, One win and two second-place finishes were enough to see ‘The Boss’ edge Dale Ewers and Nick Fowler. Nick Marquet took out the Barry Butterworth Memorial South Island series in the midgets. Glen Leech won the War of the Wings.

Stoke win back one day title

Phillip Rollo Marty King batted like he was a top order batsman as Car Company Stoke/Nayland closed off the cricket season with a trophy in the cabinet. Chasing 157 for victory, Stoke/Nayland only had one wicket to spare as they reached the total in the 48th over at Saxton Oval on Sunday. The Car Company one-day cricket title was the first silverware Stoke/Nayland has claimed this year after losing the Twenty20 final to ACOB earlier in the season. Skipper Ryan Edwards was pleased to overcome Robbies Bar & Bistro Waimea Toi Toi United, a side he rates as the benchmark in Nelson cricket. "It's always nice to finish off the season with a trophy in the bank," he says. "It's been a frustrating season so it's good to finish on a high." Mitchell Drummond reached a half century to anchor the win, before fellow young guns Ben Alder and Josh Sansom contributed alongside the cool-headed Marty King in the closing overs.

'Ireland' wins ethnic football tournament

Ireland will represent Nelson Tasman at the national ethnic football championship in November after finishing the regional final undefeated at Neale Park on Saturday. Ireland surprised favourites Club Italia in the first match 1-0, before earning enough points against the Chin side and the Bhutan Dragons. The Chin side were too good in the social grade, for children. The tournament was organised by Nelson Police. Policing development manager John Robinson says they are in discussions about hosting the national final in Nelson in November. Ireland will represent Nelson Tasman against the ethnic football champions from all of the other centres around New Zealand.
