Dry January boosts sales
Sales of ice creams, bottled water, sunscreen and water slides have been “going crazy” as temperatures around the Nelson region hit near-record highs last month. The latest Met Service records released on Monday tell us what we already know – that January in Nelson was one of the hottest and driest months on record. Nelson’s average mean temperature last month was 19.1 degrees Celsius, with the
highest maximum of 27 degrees being recorded on January 18 and 29. That made it the fifth warmest January since records began in 1941 and the second driest with just 6.6mm of rain in the month. In fact, if it hadn’t have rained on Saturday – the final day of the month – it would have been the driest January on record, beating the record low of 3.7mm in 1978.
Simon Bloomberg Reporter
simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz And that warm weather has resulted in record sales of anything and everything that’s cool, wet or refreshing. “I’ve been here for seven summers and this one has been the busiest ever,” says Philip
van der Waal, owner of ice cream and gelato shop Penguinos. “I would have sold 40 per cent more this month than I did last January. Market Day is usually our best day but last Thursday it was really hot and we sold twice that amount.” Philip says the refreshing flavours like lemon, watermelon and mint have been

Nelsonians give Monster Slide mixed reviews Jacob Chandler After a lacklustre start in Christchurch, where one man came away with spinal injuries, the Monster Slide has also had mixed reviews from sliders in Nelson. The event, held in upper Collingwood St, began with a slow start due to the rain and some failing generators causing a delay of around an hour before sliders could ride the 300m slide. Most people spoken to by the Nelson Weekly say they were waiting 45 minutes to an hour in line but most were understanding due to the large turnout. The queue spanned most of the length of the slide itself.
One rider, Brendan Naughton, was not impressed with the event though. “It’s not a steep enough slope. All the water falls to one side and you can’t get enough speed up. The security is terrible, there’s people skipping up the queue and the security are just sitting over there with their hands folded.” Event organiser, Jamie Templeton, says his role had become mainly janitorial during the event but he was happy with the turnout. “I think we did about 1500-2000 tickets and it looks pretty good, the line is moving and people are getting their slides.” He says he was happy that the Collingwood St residents were getting involved too.

Ocean Lodge staff assaulted and robbed A man confronted two female staff members at the Ocean Lodge on Saturday night, demanding money before running away. The staff were in the process of closing up when the lone person entered the premises and forced his way behind the counter at around 10pm, say police. “The offender was aggressive, physically
pushing a female staff member and verbally threatening the women. A sum of money was handed over by the staff and the offender left.” Both women were upset and angry, however they were unharmed. The offender was seen to run off towards Beach Rd from the Ocean Lodge.
Police are seeking assistance to identify the offender who is described as a Maori or Pacific Islander, very solid build, at least 180cm tall, last seen wearing grey sweat top and pants. Information can be provided to Nelson Police on 546 3840 or confidentially to CRIMESTOPPERS 0800 555 111

Starting school for a five year old can be a terrifying experience, at least Tessa Mackean doesn’t have to go through it alone. Tessa has her first day at Nayland Primary School today – but alongside her will be her two brothers and mum, also having their first day at the school. The Mackean family moved to Nelson during the summer from Auckland to be closer to both sets of grandparents and mum Belinda, also a teacher, says she’s looking forward to starting her new job alongside her children. “I think it’s going to be quite different, the kids are quite excited but come first day I think there might be a few nerves.” Tessa, along with Oliver, 9, and Charlie, 7, say they’re excited about the start of the year and their new uniforms. Most primary schools head back to school today [Tuesday] and police are warning drivers to keep an eye out. Sergeant Stu Wright said young children can be quite vulnerable. “Young children returning to school are excited and are not good at judging speed and distance. All road users need to expect the unexpected. No one wants a child to be killed on

21 rides in 21 hours for Tom’s special birthday
Simon Bloomberg
Nelson cyclist Tom Filmer is certain to have some painful memories of his 21st birthday after deciding to celebrate the occasion by riding up the Barnicoat Walkway 21 times in 21 hours. Riding up the track just once is enough for most recreational mountainbikers, who usually take around 30 or 40 minutes to climb the 451 vertical metres and 3 kilometres from the head of the Marsden Valley to the top of the Barnicoat Range. But Tom wanted to “do something different” for his 21st and came up with the crazy plan for riding the Barnicoat 21 times in 21 hours. He also wanted to celebrate his birthday by helping a charity and is promoting his 21 ascents ride as a fundraiser for

the Nelson Tasman Hospice. “Lots of people have helped me out with my riding over the years so I thought it was time for me to give something back,” Tom says. “All the charities do a really good job, but we decided on the hospice because all the nurses and people behind it are so awesome.” Tom will start his charity ride with head lights at 4am this Saturday. He will need to ride around 126 kilometres of the four-wheel-drive track, and climb a total of 9471 vertical metres, in 21 hours to reach his target - that’s 623 metres more than Mt Everest. “The fastest I’ve gone up there is around 16 or 17 minutes and I’ve ridden it really hard five times in a row in training, but this is going to completely different. It
will be really important to pace myself and keep a close eye on my heart rate so I don’t blow up.” Tom says he has been training hard for the challenge, completing an eight hour, 150 kilometre ride from Nelson to Takaka and back via the Rameka Track and Kaiteriteri Mountainbike Park late last month. Tom says he is keen for riders to join him “on as many of the ascents as they like” and is encouraging them to make “a donation per ascent” to the hospice. Volunteers will be collecting donations for the hospice on the day of the ride, but donations can be made online to HospiceCharityRide account number - 12-30400572664-51 Reference TOM. Tom’s ride is being sponsored by Printhouse Nelson and the Rainbow Rage.

Buskers take over Trafalgar St Nelson has had a taste of some weird and wonderful entertainment over the last few days as street performers from around the world came together for the Nelson Buskers Festival. Kicking off on Thursday, crowds gathered around the top of Trafalgar St for three days of dancing, music, acrobatics, contortionism and fire juggling, to name a few of the compelling tricks, but of course it wouldn’t be
a buskers festival without a bit of spectator assistance, and willing or not, the public seemed to entertain just as much as the buskers. A performance by Spanish busker Eddy Eighty left Nelson man Stuart Cliffin and Hungarian tourist Hunor Lorinczi shirtless and dancing to some eighties hits, while UK/AUS busker Bendy Em delighted her audience when she squeezed her whole body into a small box.

New principal ready for change
Andrew Board
Nayland College’s latest intake of year 8 students won’t be alone as they learn their way around the school this week – their principal will also be checking his bearings. Daniel Wilson had his first official day in his new job last week but will welcome students to the new school year today. The 38 year-old was chosen last year to take over the reins from Rex Smith and he says he’s delighted at the opportunity. “It was a bold move from the board to pick someone so young, but I think I can add some real positives to this school. Walking around, it already has great bones and I’m looking forward to adding to that.” His most challenging task will be the worrying trend of the school’s roll. For the second year in a row the school has dropped around 80 students on the year before and Daniel says he’s keen to figure out why that is. “I’ll be talking to parents, teachers and to Broadgreen [Intermediate] to find out why local families aren’t sending their kids here. Talking to the teachers and looking at the facilities I can’t see why they wouldn’t, it’s a fantastic school.” Daniel, a keen musician, moved to Nelson from south Auckland, where he was an associate principal at Manurewa High School. He says he was persuaded to apply for the job by his former boss,
Nayland College principal Daniel Wilson settling into his new job this week. Photo: Andrew Board ex Nelson College headmaster, Salvi Gargiulo. “Salvi is passionate about Nelson and its education, and so he was pretty influential in me applying.” Daniel says he will bring a sense of professionalism to the school as well as a desire to lift some aspects of the school. “Looking at our results, some are fantastic, especially scholarships. But other areas could probably do with some work, so I’ll be looking into those and making changes if they’re needed.” When asked about the school’s longstanding “mufti” policy for senior stu-
dents, Daniel was a little coy, deflecting the responsibility to the board. “That’s up to the board to make that decision but I’ve certainly seen a uniform work really well in other schools. I will have to see first-hand how it works here before I make my mind up about it.” He says he has made his mind up about one thing though – Nelson. "I love it here already. My wife and kids are really happy here and the weather has been great, plenty of days at the beach. We're excited about our life here."

Win a year’s worth of meat
Andrew Board
Stoke’s Mad Butcher store had the second busiest opening on the franchise’s history and its local owners – Dan and Nikki Perrin – want to say thanks the best way they know how – free meat. The Mad Butcher was opened in the former Stoke Rugby Clubrooms last November and the Perrins were pleasantly surprised at the onslaught. On opening day the store was jampacked and Dan says it barely stopped over the next few months. “The opening definitely exceeded my expectations. The first few months were just crazy.” Now the couple are offering a competition to win a year’s worth of free meat as a way to say
thanks. To enter, simply spend $30 at the Mad Butcher during the month of February, then fill in the entry form and you’re in the draw. A winner will be drawn at the start of March and the winner will win $50 worth of meat each week for 52 weeks. Dan says the meat can be selected from anything in stock. “We’re pretty much running the competition to say thanks to Nelson for all the support, the number of people coming in here is awesome. Heaps of people have been coming in to offer their support and say how much they like the shop, so we want to say thanks.” For more information on the competition, ask in store.

Bikes and art mix for bikefest
Cycling and art are not usually two things that go together, but one Nelson artist is changing that by creating sculptures of a funky biking family for the Sprig & Fern Bicycle Art Competition. The competition is part of the Konica Minolta Bikefest Nelson which started at the weekend and it has already attracted some weird and wonderful entries. One of those has been created by sculptor Gwen Nicholson, who has entered fabric sculptures of a mum, dad and daughter out biking. Gwen has made the bike riders out of wire frames, covered in old clothing items which have been set using a fabric hardening product called Paverpol. The cyclists are riding old bikes Gwen “scrounged up” from neighbours and the recycle centre, where she also found the old clothing items. “I was initially only going to make a lady rider but I thought she needed company, so I started making the father and daughter. There might even be a fourth family member out riding if I get time - who knows.” Competition organiser Kaye Hill of Cyclelogical says she has already received 21 entries and expects more before the entries close on February 10. The variety of the entries is “awesome” and includes a chair made of bike parts, a bird, paintings, sculptures and jewellery and ball made out of 175 bike inner tubes. All the creations need to contain bicycle components, either physically or as an image, and will be on display and judged at the Carnivelo at Trafalgar Park on February 13. The winner will receive $1000 from Sprig & Fern.

Rodeo: Your article on the Richmond Rodeo this week paints a positive picture. However your readers need to know that the SPCA does not support rodeos due to the stress experienced by the animals and they also condemn the equipment used to induce them to perform. Rodeos should be banned from NZ. They are not part of our rural heritage. Cynthia McConville.
Nelson College full: Nelson College should have zoning, if that's the case. Brenda Kenny.
Temperature on TV: I agree with your last week's writer about the inaccurate Nelson temperature on TV One. We in Nelson had hoped that with a new weather man he may have been a new broom and put more realistic temperature for Nelson. The last few nights they have been up to 6 degrees below the real level. Please, can we get them try harder. Regards, Colin J. Gillespie PS: 22 should not be fixed number for our temperature, as used by TVNZ
Then where will they go? I think it's a sign that the school is extremely popular and, with Nelson city and the other suburbs growing, its only natural that they will go to either the closest school or the one the parents deem the best in the area. Nelson is growing in population, as well as Richmond. Waimea intermediate is also having to turn away students as they are chocka full too. So its not just Nelson having a problem finding places to put students. It shows that more people are coming to Nelson, and the schools are unfortunately feeling the pressure and now need to build more classrooms to accommodate. Julia Lines.

I don't see why they can't just cut the enrolments off once they reach a maximum number. If all classrooms are full then they should just put the no vacancy sign out! Tania Preston Brunell.
Obviously require another boys' school in the region. Put it Richmond in Lower Queen St so oodles of space to expand with Tasman District. Could also run some agricultural and horticultural courses. Would be great to have more education options. Need could be met through a Charter School set up. Dave Trigg.

With Nelson Weekly editor Andrew 'Bad News' Board Isn’t it amazing what a couple of bleeding noses will do to your resolve? Last year I was asked to take part in the Fight 4 Victory charity boxing event to help raise some money for the Victory Boxing Charitable Trust. Having been to the gym several times and witnessed what a great job they do for the kids who attend, I enthusiastically agreed. I’d be lying if I told you there weren’t a couple of selfish reasons as well. The added incentive of getting fit and throwing myself outside my comfort zone were certainly positives that I know will come from the experience – but charity was key. It was September last year when I agreed to take part in the Fight 4 Victory. Three weeks of official training down and I’m wondering what the hell I’ve got myself into.
I don’t want to give too much away to my opponent [a man I’m trying to morph into a villain in my own head], but training has been brutal. Fat lips, plenty of sweat and plenty of pain. Tears? Not quite, but too close for comfort. Under the expert tutelage of Barry Galbraith, Paul Hampton, Deon Charles and Andy Sanson, nine other "boxers" have joined me in the blue corner. We meet three times a week, run, skip, hit bags, hit each other and then cry in agony as we’re made to do horrific ab workouts. On top of all that are the mental games. In just two months, we’ll all hop in the ring in front of several thousand people and attempt to compete in a sport that was completely foreign to us just a few months before. If
that isn’t enough to contend with, some bugger standing in the same ring will be trying to punch us on the nose. Trust me, that messes with your head after a brutal training session. They say the journey is part of the beauty of competing in these types of events. So over the next nine weeks I’ll let you know how the good people in the blue corner are finding the training and what we’ll be doing to help raise some extra cash for the cause. So keep an eye out and if you see any of us on the street with a fat lip, try not to laugh, we’re in enough pain as it is. Fight 4 Victory is being held at Saxton Stadium on April 4. General admission tickets will go on sale from February 20 at the usual Ticket Direct outlets, including the Theatre Royal, Nelson i-Site and Richmond Mall. Tickets will cost $35 each.

Snapper competition lures fishermen The country’s largest teams fishing competition is back and organiser Troy Dando says it will be much bigger and better than previous years. Troy started the Tasman Bay Snapper Classic two years ago, but didn’t advertise it as he wanted to make sure the format was right before it went too big, too quick. After two years of refining, he’s certain he’s got it right. “It went surprisingly well, really, for the first two years while we were making sure the concept worked. Now we know it does we’re inviting more people and hoping to make a great day of it.” The competition is open to all businesses or clubs and sees a team of four attempt to land the Organiser of the Tasman Bay Snapper Classic, biggest snapper they can. Troy has assembled a Troy Dando, with a massive snapper caught in great list of sponsors who have made for a huge Tasman Bay last year. prize pool, including a $4000 GPS fish finder from Simrad. “I want this to be a great event and so we’ve made sure the prizes are really good so it’s worth people’s while.” The $200 entry fee covers the team of four and includes a dinner and drink at the Speight’s Ale House after the competition, where the weigh in will be held and prizes announced. Troy says he’s hoping for 300 people to be involved and has already had strong interest. Categories include heaviest snapper [for which there are prizes for the heaviest 15 snapper], heaviest combination of four snapper from one boat, and various prizes for biggest gurnard, kahawai, tuna and kingfish. Schools are back… School is back and that means there will be more children out and about, especially in the mornings and afternoon. The basic message around schools is: slow down and look out for kids. In many places around Nelson electronic variable school speed limit signs will be turned back on. Reducing your speed to 40km/h provides for a much increased reaction time for a driver, meaning you can identify potential hazards and react much more quickly.
Pedestrian crossings are places where pedestrians should be able to cross the road in safety. Drivers need to slow down as they approach them and be prepared to stop. Students and families need to remember to use the correct place to safely cross the road outside the school. So be extra careful around schools and watch out for kids!
20 km/h past a stationary school bus Remember – the speed limit for passing a stationary school bus when children are getting on and off is 20 km per hour. This speed limit applies no matter which direction you are travelling in.
Drivers – school bus incidents can happen
on both high and low speed roads. However, the faster your vehicle is travelling, the more likely it is that a child will be killed if they are hit.
Parents – when dropping off or collecting
your child from the school bus, try to do it so that you are on the same side as the bus. This will cut out the need for your child to cross the road. Park your car well away from the bus stop or other children so you don’t block drivers, children’s or the bus driver’s visibility. Get out of your car and meet your child or walk with them to the designated bus stop.
Students – wait at the nominated bus stop
area and stand well back from the road edge. Bus stops have usually been chosen as a safer place to stop. After you have got off the bus wait as far away from the road edge as possible, until the bus has moved away. If you need to cross the road, wait until the bus has driven off and you can see clearly up and down the road.
Thank you.

Young horse trainer to open own stable
Simon Bloomberg
The Harness Racing Cadet of the Year, Dylan Stratford, is returning to Canterbury, where he plans to set up his own stable after gaining invaluable experience working with some of the top horsemen in the US. Dylan has been working with race horses since he was 13 when he started helping out Richmond trainer Murray Pash in the mornings before heading off to school at Waimea College. Dylan, 23, also used to help out his grandfather Roger Williams and mother Jan Williams, who "always had one or two horses in training" at Richmond Park. When he left school, Dylan moved to Canterbury to work as a stablehand for Tim Butt. Last month, he was back at Richmond Park for a few weeks "to help out mum", before returning to Canterbury where he aims to start putting together a team of horses for his own racing stables. "My family weren't that keen for me to get into the horse game but I knew that I wanted to be a horse trainer after working with Murray Pash," Dylan says. "I'd go down to the track before school and in the holidays - I really enjoyed it and I learned so much from him." After leaving school at 15, Dylan gained valuable experience working for Tim and David Butt, Nigel McGrath and Mark Jones in Canterbury, and Dean Braun in Victoria. He won New Zea-
land Harness Racing Cadet of the Year Award last August and used the $2000 prize money to spend three months working in the US with top New Jersey trainers Chris Ryder and Brett Bittle. "It was a real eye-opener going to the US. The horse racing is so different over there because there's big money for two-year-olds and they are always trying to get the horses going as quick as they can as soon as they can. "The size of some of the bigger stables is incredible too. The leading trainers like Ron Burke have 250 horses in work. carefully into the boat to unhook and measure e.g.; do not gaff the fish if you are unsure of the length, you can net or grab the tail and quickly lift in. As we were winding in our lures at the end of our day we had some braid hooked to one of the lures. We knew it wasn’t ours as it was the wrong colour, so decided to hand line it in so others wouldn't get it caught around a prop. After a heap of handlining we retrieved 300 metres of braid, four metres of leader and a small rat kingi with a 'walk the dog' lure half way down his throat. This was a sign of either not having set the rod's drag correctly for "strike" and or not having the 'clicker' on to gain the angler's attention. Either way, the small kingi would have suffered a sure death dragging around all that jewellery had we not unhooked and released it. Don't be scared to ask the advice of the fishing shop staff or come along to our Dawnbreakers Fishing Club to get some tips on the correct methods for targeting kingfish. Most by now would have the 7th March booked in for the Tasman Bay Snapper Classic, but also there is the endorsed Charity Auction at 6pm at the Speights Alehouse. So, Nelson folk, come along and support a very worthy charity and get yourself a bargain or some fish for tea. Check out "tasmanbaysnappercla ssic" on Facebook.

Nelson driver Preston Brunnell in his self-built Model A Ford Pickup at the NDRA-hosted Drag races on Saturday. Preston won the Ian Griffith Automotive Hot Rod Challenge which was run alongside the fourth round of the NZDRA National series. The series is the most important event on the NZDRA calendar, as cars travel around the country to race and earn points for the overall goal of getting 1NZ printed on the side of their cars. Tuna time is here! Some good reports of tuna getting caught on both sides of the bay and as low down as Delaware Bay. Troll any type of lure at lower speeds of 4.5-6.0 knots to try and nab an albacore tuna. Snapper are still taking rod and reel fishing on changes of light and small bite times. Set-lines have slowed a bit while spawning is on but some good catches up to 30 lb have been rumoured. Kenerpuru Sound is still fishing well for snapper and kingfish alike. Scallops are hard to get in numbers but still worth the effort and a favourite seafood of many. We shot down to Pepin on Saturday only to be met by a gusting S/E wind coming out of Delaware bay, a reminder that certain winds affect areas differently and if a change of direction happens while you are out there it may be a long bash back to port. In light of boating tragedies recently around the country, ensure you check an up-to-date weather forecast and do not venture too far depending on your boats capabilities. Numerous reports of schools of "rat" kingis and bigger models have been seen in all corners of the bay. They are prolific after 3 or 4 great breeding years in a row, which is great for our local fishery stocks. Just remember, the legal takeable size for a Kingfish is 75cm and over, that is a reasonable size fish so please handle
