Kids give TRYathlon a go Fifteen hundred and three children were winners at the Weet Bix TRYathlon, completing a swim, bike and run all in the name of giving it a go. Although inclement weather threatened the event, the 20 year anniversary “couldn’t be better,” with Nelson’s trademark sun shining against
the odds. “It’s all about getting kids away from the Playstation, and the TV, whatever else they do; to get out, get some fresh air, get some exercise, get some good breakfast,” says Ettienne McClintock, of the senior management team for the event.
Read us online at www.nelsonweekly.co.nz
The event drew thousands to Tahunanui Beach, enjoying the attractions, a Weet-Bix breakfast and cheering on the children. Proceeds from the event go to the Weet-bix TRYathlon Foundation and the make a Wish Foundation, and every participant was awarded a medal.

The unhappy village
by the media, their [residents] committee and representatives of the council. They don’t have an understanding of the issue other than it’s a big increase they are facing.” Michael estimated just ten protesters and said it was confined to the morning. When told the protesters were back out on the road and had tripled in size by the afternoon he said he was not aware of it. There does appear to be some light at the end of the tunnel though. Local businessman John Davies has come on board to try to sort out the dispute and reach a settlement between the residents and owners. Michael says he holds little faith in the negotiation though. “There is someone negotiating from the committee at the moment. I’m happy with that procedure but I very much doubt it will have a conclusion because I believe the committee will not accept the negotiator’s outcome.”
More than 30 Waimea Village residents attracted hundreds of honks from drivers supporting their bid to stop owners Michael and Carolyn Wright once again raising the fees they pay. Holding signs like “bullying, intimidation” and “2 Wrights make it wrong” the mainly elderly residents attracted plenty of support. The action comes after Michael and Carolyn decided to lift the service fees from $80 a month in 2010 to $284 this year. Currently residents pay $125 per month for services like maintenance of the common ground, weekly van rides to Richmond and green waste collection. Residents own their own homes and pay normal council rates on top of the monthly fees. Michael says the increases are needed for the village to break even and the protesters aren’t fully aware of the facts. “I don’t have a problem [with the protest], it’s a free country. Unfortunately they’ve been misled

Big celebration for small people
World War II veterans Stan Daubney, Roy McLennan and Wilf Bryan check out the HMNZS Wellington. Photo: Jonathan McKeown.
There was music, fun, and excited children everywhere as Nelson’s kindergartens celebrated Children’s Day. Several get-togethers were organised throughout the region, allowing kids from neighbouring kindergartens to mix and mingle. Donna Bishop, of Victory Square Kindergarten, says their long lunch with Nelson South Kindergarten was a great way for the children to meet new friends, and see others who they’d know from the community. “All the children are just mixing in beautifully, they’re having a ball. We’re
definitely going to do this again.” Stoke, Nayland and Birchwood kindergartens had an exciting morning at Broadgreen Rose Garden, with Kath Bee keeping the kids entertained with her well known and loved music. The sun wasn’t bright but the children were, with Stoke, Nayland and Birchwood each sporting a different colour; yellow, red and blue respectively. Gaye Wood, who helped organise the event, was happy with how successful it was. “The children love it; they know they’re special, but today they’re super special.”
Navy sails back into town The last time HMNZS Wellington cruised in to Nelson the frigate was commanded by Bruce McLennan the son of former Nelson mayor Roy McLennan. Roy was on hand with a group of WWII Navy veterans as the HMNZS Wellington returned to Tasman Bay and opened its decks to the public. Roy who was mayor of Nelson from 1971 to 1980 recalled that his son Bruce was a picture of manners. “When he came off deck, his
mother and I were waiting and to my surprise he bent down and kissed his mother in front of the crew. I thought he was more selfconscious than that,” recalls Roy. Nelson is still represented on HMNZS Wellington by combat system specialist Petty Officer Duncan Anderson, an old boy of Nelson College. The veterans and public enjoyed their tour of the 85 metre Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) fresh from a mission in the Southern Ocean.
The crew of around 40 young men and women steamed to the sub Antarctic, Auckland and Campbell Islands to re-supply and changeout DOC workers studying local flora and fauna. It wasn’t all smooth sailing on the way to Nelson with the infamous West Coat weather causing the OPV to broach and send a few unwary sailors out of their bunks. “Testing weather is part of the job, and it was a good test to see who in the crew hadn’t tied down their gear,” says Duncan.
Michaela Macdonald, Tayla Hargreaves and Zoe Butcher enjoy the fun, activities and the music of Kath Bee at Broadgreen Rose Garden for Children’s Day. Photo: Rosie Thomsen.

Fair ready for Stoke return
Jan Johnson, Kyra Wareing, Ron Johnson and Jim Wareing jump aboard the Wareing's 1926 Hupmobile in preparation for the NBS tour, with Peter Havill of NBS. Photo: Rosie Thomsen.
Old-school road trip for NBS Rosie Thomsen A convoy of classics will wind its way around the upper South Island in honour of Nelson Building Society. The Vintage Car Club has brought together 17 veteran vehicles and counting, everything from a near century old 1918 Buick, to a comparably modern 1977 Triumph. The five-day tour will visit all seven NBS branches from Nelson to Greymouth, covering over 800 kilometres. The Vintage Car Club will take the opportunity
to personally thank the people of NBS for the support they show to their club and the community, and to congratulate them, as New Zealand’s oldest Building Society, on their coming 150 year anniversary. The tour sets off from the Nelson NBS branch on March 15, with cars joining and leaving the tour wherever it suits them. While in Greymouth the tour will stop off for the West Coast Scenicland Rally. The Vintage Car Club was started 45 years ago, with over 30 branches nation-
wide. The NBS tour is attracting “tourists” from as far afield as Oamaru, with many cars built in the 1920s, making them more-travelled than their drivers. Peter Havill, Nelson’s branch manager, says NBS branches are looking forward to the visit from the NVCC. “We at NBS are very appreciative of the support of the Vintage Car Club and its members. We believe that supporting sport, cultural and recreational activities is a way of promoting a sense of pride in our community and an attitude of success in our region.”

The fair will be held on Saturday from 9:30am12noon. There will be prize draws of a free Warrant of Fitness thanks to Bowater Honda, shrubs and Easter treats. The fair raises money for Save the Children and last year’s fundraising efforts went towards earthquake-ravaged Christchurch. Organiser Isabelle Jones is encouraging locals to come check out the fresh produce, make a great bargain and take home some of the “very cheap” apples.
From My Desk
Autumn has arrived in full glory, and hopefully some of those leaves, that are turning into beautiful shades of orange and deep reds, have not all been blown away with our weekends winds.
My focus for the week: - Cotton on Kids. This is a wonderful place to discover the latest in Kids clothing at Cotton On. Shop for boys - fleece, jackets, tees, pants, denim, polos, shirts, shorts, tanks, and for girls - dresses, skirts, jewellery and hair accessories and so much more. The sparkles, frills and tulle are every little girl’s dress up dreams come true. While you feast in the fairy tale surroundings of the store, your little ones can play, happily colouring in and be entertained while still having you in their view. I like to think the most important thing to remember is that you can wear fabulous clothes and gorgeous shoes, but you have got to have a good spirit on the inside. That is what is going to make you ready to face each and every day. Have a fabulous week and I look forward to your visit at our Fashion Island

Four decades of love Nelson Weekly will be profiling one of the nine Jens Hansen Love Stories finalists each week leading up to the Nelson Wedding Show in May. This week we hear the story of Jim and Raewyn. Readers will vote for the overall winner to be announced at the Wedding Show.
Jim and Raewyn tell their love story.
Is there really love at first sight? I say there is. Forty three years ago as a young 16 year old I spent the Christmas holidays with my brother in Westport, visiting his girlfriend’s parents. I was asked to go to the local superette to get some bread. There was a gorgeous guy behind the checkout and I couldn’t take my eyes off him. I kept asking my hosts if they needed anything at the shop, so I could go back to see him. Two days after the initial meeting I saw him at an event in town, and told my brother and his girlfriend that ‘the guy from the shop’ was
standing nearby. My brother’s girlfriend knew him, so she went and spoke to him and invited him to join us. The following night the four of us went to the pictures to see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, but we were heading back to Christchurch the next day. Unbeknown to me my brother had given him our phone number in Christchurch because he was going to be attending Teacher’s College there. One month later I received a phone call from ‘you know who’. I was really happy because I hadn’t stopped thinking about him since I had arrived home. Eighteen months later my sister rang me and wanted me to go shopping with her
to buy vegetables. After she dropped me home my boyfriend, Jim, picked me up as planned, and we went for a drive to New Brighton beach. We were sitting in a Morris Minor in the carpark and he asked me if I would like to get engaged. I then discovered that while my sister had me out of the way, he had gone to see my father to ask if he could marry me. I was only 17 at the time. We married 20 months later. And now after three children, two grandchildren and our 40th anniversary next year, Jim and I are still happily married and tell each other every day that we love each other.

Taking steps for a cancer cure Several thousand steps were taken to get closer to a cure, with thousands of volunteers trekking diligently around Saxton Field to raise funds for the Cancer Society over the weekend. Brightly dressed, they braved the low overnight temperatures. “It must have
been five degrees at four am,” says Rachael Watson. But even the cold couldn’t bring down their spirits. “Everyone carried on; it was good. It was never a lonely walk.” They were rewarded with a bright, sunny morning, when the closing ceremo-
ny was followed by the final lap, which everyone walked. Many at the relay had been touched by cancer, whether it was the survivors, walking a lap to open the event, or those with family and friends who had battled it.

WWI medal back in family hands
Jonathan McKeown
It was an emotional exchange as a Nelson family was presented with their uncle’s World War One service medal after it was found in the sleepout of an empty flat in South Auckland. Private William George Frost fell in the battle of Messines in Belgium on June 7, 1917 and nearly 95 years later a physical recognition of his sacrifice has come back home. Constable Matthew Green had to fight back the tears as he told the story of Private Frost’s heroism on the Western Front, where he was wounded five times before being killed in action at 20 years of age. Matthew, who has a number of servicemen in his family, then told the story of the medal’s latest journey from obscurity to the hands of Frost’s family in Nelson. When the medal was handed in to constable Matthew Green at the Takanini police station it wasn’t in great con-
dition and its origins were unknown, but along with his wife Samantha, Matthew set about restoring the quality and searching for an owner. Matthew says they knew the significance of the medal and that the most important thing was to get it home. After having the silver cleaned the couple was able to see the serial number and the search began for Private Frost’s family. “Auckland Museum came up with his service record and a brief statement of his service and then I came across his family tree,” says Matthew. William’s nephew Tony Frost says he thought the medal was gone forever and now it’s back where it belongs as a family heirloom. “It will now be passed on down through the family,” says Tony. Tony and Beth Frost attended the ceremony at Nelson police station with Tony’s sisters Beryl Watts and Peggy Gregson who were all very grateful for the efforts of Matthew and Samantha.

Alicia Reeve is a registered nurse and educator for the Billings Ovulation Method of Natural Family Planning, teaching the method to couples and presenting education sessions to community groups and health professionals. Appointments are held at St Luke’s Health centre. Home Visits are also available. The method is used by millions of women worldwide, validated by eminent international scientists and successfully trialled by the Alicia Reeve World Health Organisation, having greater than 99% reliability. Learning to identify natural signals of fertility, women can use the method to achieve or avoid pregnancy and safeguard reproductive health. Easy to learn, it can be used through all stages of a woman’s fertile lifetime (including breast feeding and in perimenopause). Billings has helped many sub-fertile couples conceive, including those trying for more than two years or who have had failed IVF attempts. Billings is different from other NFP methods; doesn’t involve counting days (like the unreliable rhythm method) or monitoring temperature. The method focusses on daily charting of mucous sensation and includes 4 simple rules. 4-6 appointments are usually required to confidently use the method. Couples are encouraged to share responsibility for learning and using the method.

Stoke Rugby 2012 The Stoke Rugby Club has an enviable position in Nelson as being one of its oldest clubs, with a past history of Nelson’s great players and with a solid and respected following. It is said that a Stoke player plays the game not only with his or her natural skills, but with a Stoke heart. I see this as one of the great things about Stoke Rugby. We may have taken a hammering last year, with injuries and changes in the structure, but the men and women, from junior grades to Senior A’s that went out in all weathers every weekend, played with heart. They gave their all, and that is all a true Stoke supporter can ever ask. I know they will do it all again this season. This year we will again be having a slight change in the Senior A’s but we feel we have the right mix to be true contenders for the title once again. In the junior grades, it is fantastic to see the same enthusiasm and drive. This will ensure that we have a strong future in Nelson Rugby. I personally am looking forward to a great year in rugby. See you on the sidelines. Regards, Mark Vinsen (Stoke Rugby Coordinator).
In 2011, in conjunction with Arrow International, the Stoke Rugby Club presented a proposal to the Nelson City Council whereby the council demolishes the existing changing rooms/toilets/showers at Greenmedows and in partnership with Stoke Rugby, Stoke Tennis, Nelson Cricket and other partners, have the council rebuild those facilities with provision for a second story housing the above partners. We received favourable comment to our submission and we are hopeful that the first draft plan in June 2012 includes this project. We await with eager anticipation! 2012 is shaping up to be a great season for us with most of the management/players/ coaches in place with good numbers attending pre-season training. There is also the prospect of a “golden oldies” president’s team and we look forward to that. Thanks and good luck to all Stoke teams in 2012, Buddy Graham, President.

2012 Despite surrendering the final in the dying stages last year, the Stoke Women are back looking for silverware. One of the main focuses for the team this year is increasing the allround skill level base. With a wealth of knowledge hidden away in the brains of the more senior members of the side, there is plenty to pass down as the team looks to go back to basics. There is a broad range of ages and skill levels in the team and to level out the playing, so to speak, they are hoping to give every member of the squad their fair share of opportunities to learn new skills or to increase existing ones. Another ongoing focus of is to nurture and promote women’s rugby. Women’s rugby has experienced a lull in numbers in the last few years and the Stoke outfit wants to encourage young women to get out and give it a go, not only for the physical fitness side, but for the support and encouragement that belonging to a tight-knit team can provide. And of course, bring home the cup.

Hundred-plus riders expected for Moutere cycle race The fifth annual Tussock Spirit of the Moutere is being held this Sunday and if you’re not already registered to be on the startline alongside around 100 other riders, then the organisers say “it’s not too late”. The race has two lengths, the 60km or 29km options. At the same time you’ll be “spinning your wheels” supporting the fundraising for St John’s new event ambulance. Entry on the day is available but it makes it much easier for planning
and organising if you go online to www.nelsonevents.co.nz and get your name on the start list by Thursday. Make a family day of it – bring a picnic and enjoy the relaxing surrounds. League prepares for nines tournament Organisers of the inaugural Nelson Nines Rugby League Tournament say they hope to create a party and festival atmosphere at Trafalgar Park, much like the Wellington Sevens, and with a family pass selling for only $25 they are hoping it will be a full house. Teams from Wellington, Christchurch and Bluff will join Tasman Rugby League’s seven local clubs for some fast-paced action this Saturday. The winner of the competition will need a strong squad as all the action will be packed between 10am and 5pm leaving little time to nurse the bumps and bruises. A round-robin competition will be followed by the finals and a result is guaranteed on the day.
The Nines game gives a hint of what’s involved in the title, with nine players per team playing nine minute halves. “It’s very, very fast but you still get the same big hits and skill level as the thirteen man game,” says Paul Lafotanoa, chairman of Tasman Rugby League. Paul says the Nines Tournament is going to be an annual event and he’s keen to experience a carnival style atmosphere where people get dressed up. There will be bouncy castles, rock-climbing and go karts to entertain the kids, while the big kids can seek refreshment at the Sprig & Fern beer tent. Under-fives get in free and children 6-16 are just $5 and adults $7 with a family ticket only $25 for two adults and up to three children.

James Peters, Lewis Miccio and Sam Wilson the three Nelson players involved in the Kaizen Academy team that played in Australia last week.
Footballers taste success Three of Nelson’s talented young footballers have returned home from the Trans-Tasman Challenge in Tasmania – winning five of their seven games. James Peters, Lewis Miccio and Sam Wilson were the only three South Island players in the Wellington-
based Kaizen under 14 Academy team, coached by former New Zealand Olympic coach Stu Jacobs. The Kaizen team won five games, drew one and lost the other during the tournament, earning high praise from other coaches at the tournament.

Tennis vets flock to Hope
It was no surprise to see Maungatapu come out on top at the Nelson College for Girls athletics day, after all, they have done so for the past five years. The Nelson College for Girls athletics day was held at Saxton Oval on Wednesday with many records falling on the Mondo track. The day combines festive fun, colour and championship races all in the same event. Participation is huge with most of the girls competing in a string of events. While there is plenty of laughter and joy for some, once the heats are over it becomes business time for the top athletes at the school and all of the top performers were given the chance to represent their school at the Tasman Secondary School Championship this Saturday from 10am. It will be the first time the inter-school championship is held on a weekend.

The Nelson Veterans Tournament took place over the weekend at the Hope Tennis Club with 110 entries, an increase on entries over the past few years. A social grade was introduced which proved very popular with many players entering their first Veterans Tournament. There were nine husband and wife combinations competing over the weekend and players came from West Coast, Marlborough and Canterbury to take part in the 44th Annual Tournament. The youngest player was Julian Main of Canterbury, the minimum age required being 35 years and the oldest competitor was Nelson’s 85 year-old Joyce Jones competing in the social doubles. The standard of tennis was outstanding with some tough experienced competitors.

Karen Carey This weekend the Nelson Speedway Association will once again be hosting the Brian Stanaway Roading Stock Shock. For the last few years the Stock Shock has been one of the “must attend” meetings, not just on the Nelson calendar but also on the calendar of many of the country’s top stockcar drivers. Last year a late clash of dates meant that the number of drivers attending was down on past seasons but that in no way impacted on the quality of racing. This year the entry list is sitting at around 30, ensuring some close action packed racing over the two days. The Stock Shock has a reputation for producing some of the hardest and most competitive racing in this class outside of a teams event and already the excitement is building within the Nelson Stockcar class. With a posse of 7 visitors coming from Blen-
heim, one can only assume that this will be the meeting where a few scores will be settled and a few early season paybacks meted out. Add to the entry list the return of ex superstock driver, Invercargill based Campbell McManaway, Stock Shock regular Tony Stanton from Greymouth and 3 Christchurch drivers Daniel McNally, Matt Cockburn, and Paul Anderson making their Stock Shock debut and the potential for a weekend of mayhem increases. The sole North Island representative is Kyle Heibner from Whanganui. Kyle has raced here before in his Youth Ministock and has been impressive since moving up to Stockcars. Last year’s winner, Tim Alexander is not racing this season so we are definitely looking for a new Stock Shock champion. Ralph Gillespie, a past top 3 place getter, will be a favourite to move further up the podium and take out the number one spot.

On Friday night in addition to the qualifying for the Stock Shock itself the meeting also features the 2 day Ministock Mania championship for Youth Ministocks. This is a highly contested event for the youth drivers and one that is run over a qualifying and finals points system. While the class is essentially designed as a training class rather than a competitive class this format teaches them the importance of finishing races, gaining places,
