On 5 July, he started building a deck at his Redwood Valley property and felt fine. But after a shower on Sunday night, he thought he hadn’t dried off properly

Local e-bike injuries have spiked seven-fold in the last five years as the popularity of the mode of transport increases, particularly in the 55 to 75 years age group. From 2017-2021, ACC claims in the Nelson Tasman region for ebike injuries went from less than 10 to 78. Nationally, there were about 970 new claims with more than 58 per cent of these coming from the 55-75 age group. However, those stats didn’t deter Jeanette Sice from recently upgrading to an e-bike. “E-bikes are marvellous. You can go further without being tired,” she says. “There’s no head wind and no hills. But they do handle differently.” While Jeanette rode frequently before she bought her e-bike, many others are purchasing ebikes having not been on a bike for years. Wheel Woman owner Emma Bawtree, who runs introductory lessons for new e-bike users, thinks it’s fantastic that people are using e-bikes. However, she says new riders need to know they are different from bikes of the past. She says it isn’t just those who haven’t been on a bike for years that can benefit

from lessons. “Bikes have changed a lot, and these have a motor and are heavy,” she says. “There is a need for more skills to manage the bike.” Emma says balance and body position are important and suggests people to start on a flat open area when they first ride an e-bike. She encourages people to be competent with basic bike safety, braking and controlling gears before attempting to ride on trails. With an increasing number of e-bikes on our roads and cycle trails, the Tasman District Council (TDC) is looking to partner with Nelson City Council and local cycle retailers to offer lessons for new users. “With the sheer numbers, complexity of some of the systems, and bikes different in their own way, we are working on offering lessons to those who want it,” says TDC communications and change manager Chris Choat. My Ride Richmond owner Mike Anderson says there are many older people buying e-bikes and there are some who haven’t ridden for 30 years. He says that an e-bike is a good way for people to get active but agrees there is a place for lessons.

Local e-bike injuries spike from PAGE 1 Habit Health Physiotherapist Jade Nott says it’s great to have more people out there on bikes, but there is a risk with e-bikes if people don’t know how to operate them. The majority of people she has seen with e-bike injuries

have been mature women with most shoulder, arms, and wrist injuries. The extra power of an e-bike allows people to access more trails, so Jade says it is important that people build up their confidence on flat straighter terrain before tackling the harder trails.

A Nelson judge says she has not seen a drink driving history “this bad in years” after a Hope woman drove seven times over the legal limit. Sacha Julie Frances L’Estrange, 36, pleaded guilty to charges of driving with excess blood alcohol in Nelson District Court on Monday. According to the police summary of facts, L’Estrange pulled out of her car park in Sundial Square, Richmond at about 6.20pm Friday, 13 August. Police saw L’Estrange driving

slowly and side-swiping a parked van next to her. When L’Estrange saw the police, she reversed back into the carpark. Police approached and noted she exhibited signs of recent alcohol intake. A breath test showed L’Estrange’s breath alcohol was at 1704mcg per litre of breath, nearly seven times over the legal limit. L’Estrange admitted to police to having drinks at The Stables Tavern & Restaurant when she attempted to drive home with her partner. Her drink driving history includes convictions from 2017, 2019 and another drink driving charge that took place only

a week after the Sundial Square incident. Judge Jo Rielly highlighted L’Estrange’s “extraordinarily high” readings in court on Monday, telling the defendant she was at an “extremely high” risk of imprisonment. “I haven’t seen a driving history this bad for years,” Judge Rielly said. L’Estrange will partake in a month-long rehabilitation which Judge Rielly said will be crucial to the outcome of her sentencing. “I want to encourage you to do the rehabilitation, if you successfully complete it that will have a significant impact on sentencing.” L’Estrange is due to appear for sentencing 7 December.

Nelson Marlborough Health is scrambling to fill roles as international candidates are having to wait up to 12 months to come into the country in a backlog that could affect the system for years to come. Border restrictions have highlighted the dependence that Nelson Marlborough Health has on staff from overseas. “I don’t think any of us realised how important staff from overseas are to keeping things going,” says health board chief executive Lexie O’Shea. Visa restrictions and the unavailability of space in MIQ have meant start dates for those employed by the health board can be up to 12 months from the date of appointment. Nelson Marlborough Health chair Jenny Black has joined other South Island chairs to raise concerns with the Minister of Health regarding the role of immigration in recruiting international candidates. There is uncertainty over whether health board staff will go on the exemption list, but they are hoping there will be some movement for the health force.

Border restrictions are making it hard for Nelson Marlborough Health to get workers into the country. Photo: File. The Association of Salaried Medical Specialists executive director, Sarah Dalton, says New Zealand is among the countries most reliant on overseas trained doctors anywhere in the OECD. “More than 40 per cent of our senior medical workforce trained in another part of the world and then chose to work in New Zealand,” she says. Lexie says human resource is one of the challenges with moving ahead with elective work. “The same team manages the acute and elective areas.” Those operating in private facilities are also the same staff working at the hospital. Lexie says that cumulative ef-

fects of changing alert levels, and the necessary constraints these place on planned care, have had backlog build on backlog. “We could have a backlog for years to come,” says Jenny Black. However, pandemic preparedness is continually being reviewed. Lexie says there has been an increase in hospital intensive care bed capacity since the 2020 outbreak through additional ventilators and staff training. “We now have 18 ventilators with staff trained for intensive care and high dependency across Nelson and Wairau hospitals.”

Taryn’s journey out of the darkness Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

It’s been more than a decade since Taryn Beattie tried to take her own life. “When I decided to act, I didn’t want to talk to anyone,” she says. “I was happy I had made that decision and I was leaving my family unburdened. I was doing them a favour.” However, it is only in the past few months that she has felt comfortable enough to ask for help. Now she is helping spearhead a major fundraising campaign for youth mental health services with Mike King’s I Am Hope programme. This includes next year’s MET for Mental Health Gala which has already raised more than $100,000 and Gumboot Friday which will take place on November 5. It took a second national lockdown for Taryn, who was living alone and running a business, to reach out for support. “I called a friend and told her I don’t feel safe in my brain, and I asked her to move in.” It had been a long journey

NEWS Cycle trail gets funding: The Tasman Great Taste Trail will receive almost $80,000 of government funding to help repair parts of it that were damaged by flooding in July. Extreme weather caused washouts along the trail in Kaiteriteri, Hoult Valley, Quail Valley, and Tunnel Rd. Sections of the trail in Kaiteriteri, Wakefield, and around Spooners Tunnel still needed to be repaired. The funding was part of $650,000 from the Government’s NZ Cycle Trails Fund to repair four of New Zealand’s major cycle tracks that were damaged this winter.

Kapa Haka competition cancelled: Set to be hosted in Whakatū for the first time, the National Primary Schools Kapa Haka Competition Te Mana Kuratahi has had to be cancelled. Te Mana Kuratahi had warned that if, at any time, any region outside of Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland) was to move up to Level 3 or higher then the competition would have to be cancelled. With the cancellation of this year’s Te Mana Kuratahi, a new round of Regional qualifying competitions will take place in 2022 and Te Mana Kuratahi will be hosted in Te Tauihu (Top of the South) in 2023. Crime down in Tasman up in Nelson: Crime in the Tasman region was down nearly 30 per cent in August compared to July. Police statistics showed a drop in assaults, burglary and theft. There was only one robbery. Robbery is defined as when someone steals something from you using force or by threatening you. Nelson saw an overall increase in crime, mostly due to a nearly 60 per cent increase in theft.

Henry learns to walk again after rare syndrome from PAGE 1 just had pins and needles. By 6am, his toes had pins and needles too. When one of his feet was dragging at 10am, he drove to the doctor. With medical staff not being able to see him until Wednesday, he went to the Emergency Department. But after myriad tests, the doctors couldn’t find a cause for his issues, and he was sent home. That night he woke up. His arms felt icy. He was back to the hospital and tests revealed he had suffered a heart attack. But, because he was put on blood thinners, they couldn’t do a lumbar puncture to help diagnose him. Then he was seen by a doctor who had seen similar symptoms before, and she diagnosed him with Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) - a rare disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the nerves. Only about 1 in 100,000 people are affected. “By Tuesday afternoon I was paralysed,” Henry says. “It crept up my legs until I was left paralysed from the waist down.” He and his wife Sarah were given the diagnosis and told that he would get worse until he plateaued, and then recov-

Starting with weakness and tingling in extremities, GBS can eventually paralyse the whole body. “The fear was how long was this going to take,” says Henry. Sarah says he went downhill quickly. Every day she would drive into the hospital wondering what she would find when she got there.

“They tell you it will get worse until it doesn’t, but you don’t know where the bottom is.” She says it was the scariest time of her life. Henry couldn’t lift his phone or push the button to call a nurse. His face was numb and expressionless. He needed feeding and help with toileting and showering. Because Henry was diagnosed early and started on plasma to calm his immune system

down, the GBS didn’t progress as far as it does in some other patients. He plateaued after three weeks, and he moved to the recovery phase which included learning to walk again. “I kept thinking that ‘I had done this for so many years so why couldn’t I walk?’” Although he was told that walking again could be a 6-month journey, his progress was evident every day and less than a month later he walked out of the hospital. It’s still not clear what caused his GBS, which can come about from things as diverse as food poisoning to the flu. Henry credits his rapid recovery to the quick diagnosis, his faith and having been fit before he got ill. It has been hard for Henry to accept he isn’t as strong and fast as he had been all his life. He was South African gymnastics champion in his teens, and later went on to serve in the special forces. He has a home gym where he would do cross-fit each day. He’s now exercising every day and started back at work on Monday. He says the journey has been life-changing. “Smaller things mean more to me now.”

‘Walk with Us’ charity auction heats up Jo Kent The Walk For Us charity auction fundraiser is just around the corner and there are still some tickets available for the event on 9 November. The charity’s mission is to provide free school and sports footwear to children in need aged between 5 and 13 years old in the Nelson Tasman region. With big-ticket items like helicopter rides, tugboat tours and a stay on D’Urville Island, there is plenty to keep bidders happy as well as other smaller items in the silent auction running throughout the evening. Tickets cost $25 and include Kiwi food, and special guest speaker, ex-All Black Wyatt Crockett. Discover NZ Motorhome Rentals Ltd has donated a week’s family campervan hire, worth $1800, to the cause. Owner Tony Terrell says there has never been a better time to travel around the country. “We love the Walk With Us charity as it really does provide for those who need help in the school community. If we can raise funds by donating a week’s hire in one of our luxury campervans, then all the better.” Tickets cost $25, or tables $250 for 10. Tickets limited to 180 spaces. Legacy of John Mitchell celebrated Erin Bradnock Reporter

erin@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Mauī John Mitchell will be remembered as a loving family man and generous historian whose approach to life touched the lives many through the region. John, of Ngāti Tama, Te Ātiawa, Ngāti Toa, and Taranaki Tūturu descent, died on September 23 after suffering from lymphoma for the past 12 years. According to his wife and research partner, Hilary, John managed to squeeze a lot of living into his 80 years. Hilary met John when they were both 17 in their first week of study at the University of Canterbury in 1959. After seven years they married in 1966. John graduated with a BSc in geology, chemistry, physics, and maths, before switching to psychology and sociology. For the next seven years he lectured at Canterbury’s psychology department as the only person of Māori descent on the teaching staff. From there, it was a chance meeting with the country’s first Outward Bound warden at a party that changed his fate.

John Mitchell recently died at the age of 80, having lived a great life of generosity, love and care. Inset: John Mitchell in his beloved Outward Bound warden days from 1974 to 1978. Photos: Supplied. “I’d love to do that,” he told Hilary at the time. “That’s real psychology in practice.” He became an Outward Bound warden in Anakiwa from 1974 to 1978. While Hilary said his pay

dropped by half, he wouldn’t have had it any other way. Then, the pair turned to tomato growing at their then Rutherford Rd home in 1979. With just his high school tomato picking expe-

rience to fall back on, Hilary says his lens on life was “once you take one big risk you can do anything”. That risk-taking mentality led the pair to set up Mitchell Research in 1985. After the Waitangi Tribunal was finally permitted to investigate historic claims, John and Hilary set out on canvassing the histories of local iwi. Kaumātua asked John to publish his findings. “Kaumātua told John it would be a great shame if all that history were to just rot on a shelf in Wellington,” Hilary says. After the Waitangi Tribunal hearings, their findings were modified to become Volume I of Te Tau Ihu

o Te Waka in 2004. Their research into regional and personal histories continued well into the 2000s and, in 2014, the pair finished the final book in their four-part Te Tau Ihu o Te Waka series. Hilary says she was pleased that he lived long enough to see their latest book, He Ringatoi o Ngā Tūpuna, about English artist Isaac Coates and the 58 Māori he painted portraits of, released earlier this year. John would also reply to hundreds who asked after their own whakapapa. Last year alone John helped 43 people across the country in collating their family history. “He would reply to them all. He did it because people need to know their own whakapapa,” Hilary says. She says John was never an activist by nature but says “someone had to be”. “You have to stand up for what you believe in, and he always did.” Wakatū Incorporation says he will be well missed but his legacy lives on his whānau and in his published works. “His deep love for people, whakapapa and history shone through in everything he did,” a statement reads.

Helping hospice with hanky donations Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Tash Mehrtens got the idea to start up her ‘Hankies for Hospice’ campaign after an emotional oncology appointment at Nelson Tasman Hospice left her using a toilet roll to dry her tears. “I accompanied a friend to his hospice appointment where his treatment options were discussed. A lot of tears were shed and I was surprised there were no tissues available ... I wanted to help change that.” She says, as people don’t necessarily have spare money to donate, she came up with the idea of donating a box of tissues instead. “If everyone in the region gave just one box of tissues, hospice would have over 60,000 boxes.” Nelson Tasman Hospice communications coordinator Rachel Moffitt says there is a funding shortfall of $2.5 million each year to provide specialised palliative care at the hospice and doing a tissue drive means they can use vital funds elsewhere. The Hankies for Hospice campaign

is also taking cash donations which will then be passed on to hospice. The idea struck a chord with local lad Cody Dudley, 10, who recently lost his grandmother to cancer. He arranged a mufti day at Nayland Primary where students took along a box of tissues or a gold coin donation in support. “It was definitely worth it because we got an entire boot load of tissues and $617 in cash donations,” Cody says. Tash says that individuals or companies can also arrange individual tissue fundraisers. She says Hankies for Hospice will provide comfort to those when they need it the most. “A simple thing like having a tissue to dry your eyes when discussing the unthinkable provides a small comfort at such an unbearable time for patients and families.” If you’d like to donate a box of tissues, drop off points are Haven Realty, 8 McGlashen Avenue, Richmond or Fresh Choice, Richmond Mall. A profoundly deaf woman is calling on local businesses to look into rules around mask wearing, after she was unable to make store purchases due to staff refusing to remove their face coverings. Murchison woman Christine Pointon was born profoundly deaf and learned to lip read at a young age. With Covid-19 regulations making face coverings mandatory for all employees of customer-facing businesses, life has become much harder for Christine. She has become frustrated with staff refusing to remove their masks despite regulations stating that workers can legally remove masks to enable communication with a person who is deaf or hard of hearing. “It makes me feel very frustrated because I need to be able to lipread to do my transactions,” Christine says. She says shop workers have been reluctant to remove masks and sometimes even refuse, so she has had to leave the store without making her purchase. “I don’t know what anybody’s saying.” Hearing Nelson field worker Lisa Dudley says she has seen

The adventures of accident-prone Ted - Part 2 Ruth Russ Ted Higgins married Polly Lewis at her father’s home in Spring Grove in 1875. They were married by Reverend Decimus Dolamore. After the wedding, Ted bought 35 acres of land at Foxhill, on the main road. Ted and his brother Peter ran a sawmill at Belgrove. They milled timber for a new school building at Tadmor, among other projects. One day Ted and his brother-in-law, Fred Gill, were felling a tree in the bush. When it was about to go over, Ted called out, “Stand clear, Fred”. Fred darted to the side and Ted went backwards from the tree, but as it fell it hit another tree, causing it to jump on the stump. The tree ran back between Ted’s legs and sent him flying up in the air. He came straight back down and landed on his feet. When all was quiet, he said to Fred, “What do you think of that?” Fred was so pale and startled he couldn’t even answer. By 1879, Ted and Polly had three children, and Polly’s disabled brother also lived with them. In those days the bush-

coming down a bank, he put the brake on while walking beside the cart. One of his feet slipped and went under the wheel. He called out, “Whoa!” to the bullocks and they obediently stopped at once, leaving the wheel still on top of his foot and he in the way of the cart. He lay there until someone heard him calling. That person then had to go and get more men to come and lift the wheel. Ted’s heel was “flat as a penny”, and his poor mother had to stitch him up once more. No doubt his family was hugely concerned for him, but when he slid out of his room upon a chair he declared, “Oh they can’t kill me. I’m like the cat that’s got nine lives”. Ted and Polly eventually had nine children all up. One son did not make it to adulthood. Finally, when Ted was 59 years old, his luck ran out. After a fire spread in the bush, Ted helped to keep it in check, working and sweating. Sadly, he caught a chill and a severe cold which eventually consumed him. He died on 31 January, 1911.

Lake Rotoiti School show a hit despite lockdown Jo Kent Nothing was going to stand in the way of Lake Rotoiti School’s musical production not even Covid-19. So, when lockdown hit, rehearsals for ‘Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies’ became a very different experience. Office manager Dominique McCrostie says script readings were done over Zoom during lockdown and each child was required to write a synopsis of their character as part of their home schoolwork. After returning to school, rehearsals were condensed from what should have been five weeks of afternoon practices into just more than a week. “Instead of the more relaxed plan of rehearsing in the afternoon, the kids have been practising all through the

day, getting an idea of working with their props and their placement on the stage,” Dominique says. Most of the rehearsals took place in the classroom with a dummy stage area marked out. “So, when we set the stage up in the hall last week, suddenly everything became more real for the kids and excitement levels increased dramatically.” Dominique says, despite the challenging circumstances, the students did very well “Not only were they quick to pick up working on stage, but also at remembering their dance moves. They have done this with an amazing level of patience and minimal complaining. We truly have an awesome and resilient group of kids here at Lake Rotoiti School and we’re very impressed with them.”

Viavio Cheese - NATURALE. ITALIANO. ECCELLENTE. PROUDLY MADE IN NZ A vision for high quality Italian style cheese made with traditional Italian know-how and the very best natural local New Zealand ingredients. Flavio and Flavia both from Rome, Italy and passionate about good food and rugby, wanted to create a new life in New Zealand. Flavia has spent 25 years as a top executive in an international company. Flavio used to play professional rugby in Italy and briefly also played in New Zealand. With Italy having more than 1000 different types of cheeses, they found the variety of cheeses in New Zealand

very limited. Therefore, they bravely decided to introduce some of these traditional Italian cheese styles to the New Zealand market. They found in Nelson the opportunity to collaborate with Oaklands Farm. This source would provide a supply of fully traceable quality local A2-tested cows milk. ViaVio is now producing and supplying the very finest quality products made solely with natural local ingredients and no added preservatives for all like-minded discerning foodies. Look out for their products in-store!

Nelson Automotive Solutions is your ‘one stop shop’ for local servicing, repairs and diagnostics for old and new vehicles. It’s been 15 years since John Everett first took over the business, so during the month of October, the vehicle repair shop is celebrating with a special offer for its customers. John has been involved in the car industry ever since he left school, and after he came out here from England in 2004, he worked in Wellington for two years for a large car dealership. “Then in 2007, I came to Nelson and purchased Nelson Automotive Solutions and have been growing the business ever since,” says John. “We work on petrol and diesel vehicles, and small trucks – we can do everything here, inhouse – servicing, full repairs, WOFs, auto-electrical work, air conditioning and much more.”

Buying power for parts Nelson Automotive Solutions is part of a nationwide group, Daryl Smith Smith Daryl which is made up of likemindOwner/Operator Owner/Operator ed owners. “We have four meetings a year to discuss the ‘goings on’ in the business and are always looking at ways to improve it,” says John. “As a group, we have buying power for parts, so we can negotiate good discounts with suppliers, which flows onto our customers. Altogether, there are 65 workshops with Automotive Solutions and the owners are all personal friends of mine, through the conferences we attend.” Some of these are the company’s main dealer workshops, so Nelson Automotive Solutions not only has the expertise of the guys who work there, but the business can also draw on the experience of the owners

The owner of Nelson Automotive Solutions, John Everett purchased the business 15 years ago, which provides everything from servicing and repairs to WOFs and auto-electrical work.

throughout the whole country. “Also, we have customers relocating to other parts of New Zealand, so we can pass on all of their service history and details. If any of our customers are doing a big road trip and experience some issues, I have the confidence that one of the guys can help them out.” Over the years, many locals have come to know the friendly, experienced team at Nelson Automotive Solutions. John Everett not only runs the business, but he also works on the workshop floor with Jack Eathorne and Nicholas Hawkes, and Angela Miller is the office manager. “We are a close-knit team who enjoy spending time together outside of work as well,” says John. “We get a lot of customers through word of mouth. My staff know most of the customers by their first name, which is a good thing in business – you’re not just a number,” says John. “We’ve known people for years and look after them.” The mechanical repair and service business sponsors local rugby

teams, school fetes, etc. “We try to support the community as much as possible.” Special birthday promotion Nelson Automotive Solutions is in a great location in Hope, which is very central and is highly visible from the road. “We have just finished revamping the reception area and have recently bought a new hoist for the workshop,” says John. It’s easy for people to drop their vehicles off for servicing and repairs, as there is plenty of onsite parking around the premises. “There is a coffee cart at the back of our premises which is owned by Margaret who rents the space from us. She makes barista-made coffees and slices, which customers and tradies really appreciate.” For the month of October, anyone who comes in for a warrant of fitness, who is a new or existing customer, can have a FREE barista-made coffee with their WoF. “People might also like to pop in and experience our newly decorated reception area.”

Women in Business Marianne Hart Biggs - BaBy on the Move It’s been almost one year since Marianne Hart Biggs took over Baby on the Move, Nelson’s only specialist baby store. Marianne says, “because I have two children, my husband Glen and I were customers at the shop, and we always really admired it and were really appreciative of the service provided.” Marianne previously owned The Black Cab Company doing weddings and events and because she’s such a ‘people person,’ when the opportunity came up to own Baby on the Move, she felt ready for a new challenge. After meeting other NZ franchise owners, she knew it was the right choice and is absolutely loving the change of direction. Marianne has a solid background in administration, organisation and financial services, but ‘it always comes back to the people.’ “I love that Baby on the Move is a trusted brand which is more than just products – we offer hire services, trusted advice and knowledge born out of experience, because we’re all Mums and ‘Aunties’ in the shop – an all female team with an amazing connection with each other and we want our customers to feel that too.” Located at Port Nelson, Baby on the Move is Nelson’s one stop Baby Shop.

Anna Loach - SiMplicity FuneralS Anna moved to Nelson from the UK in 2002 and feels very privileged to be living in such a beautiful part of the world and feels proud to call Nelson her home. Having run her own business in the UK, upon arrival in NZ she decided to change direction in her career and that’s when she discovered her passion for the funeral industry. She became a qualified funeral director in 2012. “Integrity, professionalism and transparency is at the heart of what we do”, she says, “and gently guiding families at a time that can be stressful is a real privilege. Being able to listen to what families want and need, and for them to know that they are being cared for by a team that share the same values is what I love most of all.” You can call in to see Anna or one of the team at 69 Haven Road, Nelson or 276b Queen Street (Petrie Carpark), Richmond, or phone 03 539 0066 / 03 929 5145.

Ageing Well Estate Planning – have you done yours? Estate planning allows you to plan what is to happen when you die or if you lose mental capacity and then recording that plan in legally enforceable documentation. Questions to consider are: Who do you trust to make decisions for you in relation to your personal care and welfare, and your property if you are unable to make those decisions yourself? Who should benefit from or receive your assets when you die? If you have established a family trust and you are a trustee, who should replace you as a trustee if you lose mental capacity or die? Do you wish to record in advance how you should be medically looked after if you become seriously unwell but are unable to communicate your wishes? Pitt and Moore can provide accurate and practical advice and offer assistance in preparation of all estate planning documentation, including attending to family trust requirements, providing peace of mind by ensuring that you have Enduring Powers of Attorney and an up to date will in place.

Maureen Pugh MP Ageing gracefully is all about exercise, diet and attitude which all contribute to general wellness. Like a bottle of wine, we all get better with age with the right care. Be kind to your skin, do some exercise that you enjoy, mind your diet, do what makes you happy and minimise stress where you can. Stay as active as you can, quit smoking and consume alcohol in moderation. Get the sleep that you need, enjoy some hobbies and get regular healthcare check-ups. As National’s spokesperson for the Community & Voluntary sector I want to acknowledge those who generously donate their time and expertise and contribute to their communities, especially to those who help others age gracefully in so many ways. Those people contribute so much to so many in what can be a challenging time of life. The main thing is to have fun!

Waimea basketballers are South Island’s best Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The future of Waimea basketball appears bright after a team of junior players cleaned up their bigger city competition in Christchurch at the weekend. The Waimea College junior A basketball team can now lay claim to the title of best in the South Island after winning the junior invitational tournament in convincing fashion. After Covid led to the cancellation of nationals, the invitational was the brainchild of a former Canterbury Rams player who saw the need for something for junior players in the South Island Hitting the court just one hour after arriving in Christchurch, head coach Tim O’Malley says Waimea made a slow start to its campaign. However, after shaking off

the cobwebs, the boys got into their work and went on to dominate the game and the rest of the tournament. “From that point we hit our stride played some incredible basketball.” Tim says the next five games saw Waimea barely drop a quarter on their way to the final against Shirley Boys. “No team ended up getting an edge on us through to the finals.” Waimea shot out to a 12-4 advantage in the final to rattle their much larger Christchurch opponents. “They had a couple of big players,” Tim says. “We were outsized, but our side just showed incredible grit. They really put pressure on and tightened the screws.” Shirley managed to weather the storm and went on a 10-2 run, but the result was never really in doubt, with Waimea blowing Shirley away in the third quarter. “We just ran the life out of

them and were up by 22 at the end of third so we coasted in.” Tim cleared the bench to ensure the whole squad got to relish in the victory. Among the stars of the young gun side were Hayden Jones, son of New Zealand basketball legend Phill. “He’s got some great teammates too, Coen Williams was an absolute pest to opposing teams and Kaden Bracey is very explosive.” The three standouts will also play in a senior invitational with Waimea’s top team. “They are some talented young boys and will be key contributors.” Tim says with most players in year 11, the core of players are set to make some serious waves in the coming years. “As I reflect on this team, they are a really special group with huge potential and should be contending nationals in a few years’ time.” Tim credits Phil Jones and Ed Book for the success of the

It was two weeks ago when Macca Springer was sitting on the bench watching the Mako take on Waikato. He says he was feeling relaxed. However, with more than 20 minutes on the clock, Macca was told to start warming up. Once he got on the field the talented prodigy looked right at home. “It’s been my dream since I started getting really into rugby to make the Mako side, I didn’t think it would be a year out of school though.” His first act as a Mako came from a set move with the 19-year-old getting over the gain line Macca says he did not expect to play as long as he did, enjoying almost a quarter of the Trafalgar Park match on the wing. Despite the limitation on crowd numbers, Macca’s parents, nana and former first XV coach all managed to get in the ground to see his debut. Unfortunately, his debut was

marred as the Mooloos broke the Mako’s three-year winning streak at Trafalgar Park. While he says he is still adjusting to the increased speed and physicality of the professional game, he feels “pretty comfortable”. Last Sunday against Southland, Macca had another chance to make an impression. And he took it - soaring in the air to claim a Mitch Hunt cross-kick before stepping the cover and showing his speed to go in for his first Mako try. The Mako bounced back from the Mooloo loss with a 51-14 victory over Southland in Blenheim. Tasman’s defence was suffocating, applying relentless pressure at both breakdown and in general play. The match also served as the perfect preparation for Tasman who are just days away from a longawaited Ranfurly Shield challenge against Hawke’s Bay, just the third in the union’s history. The game kicks off at 4.35pm on Saturday in Napier.

Like most Kiwi kids, Dan George grew up believing he was destined to be an All Black. As he realised his talent didn’t quite match his sporting ambitions though, this dream appeared to be permanently lost for the Victory Primary School principal. However, Dan got the chance set to virtually suit up in the iconic black jersey, albeit as an digital version of himself. He was chosen to be part of an ‘Alt Blacks’ team along with 22 other everyday Kiwis who became videogame versions of themselves. Players were controlled by All Blacks against their South African counterparts in the video game ‘Rugby Challenge 4’ on Saturday night. Dan’s character played in the number 14 jersey as the Alt Blacks won the test 7-0. Because his body isn’t quite what it used to be, Dan wanted creators to add a bit of bulk to his avatar’s frame. “I had to send in a heap of dif-

I was hoping they might beef up my muscles a little bit.” Having started playing rugby as a five-year-old, the black jersey has always been a goal for Dan. “I guess this is the closest I’m ever going to get.” Dan had some friends over for a barbecue and some beers to watch his international onscreen debut. A number of his students were

also looking forward to seeing their principal in action. Dan has his mother to thank for his selection as she was the one who originally nominated him. Dan then submitted a video showcasing his rugby skills with a bit of a twist, - taking a literal approach to the box, banana, and chip kicks - kicking each of those actual objects. “I thought if I could make it humorous, I might be in with a shot.”

President gets a boat ...temporarily Phil Chilton It might sound a bit unusual for the president of a fishing club to not actually have a boat of any kind. But at one point, I very nearly did. It all started with a phone call from my cousin down in Invercargill telling me he’d bought a boat, and would I mind picking it up for him from Havelock when I got a chance. We would then organise for it to get down to Christchurch when the opportunity arose, in the meantime it was mine to use as I wanted. Imagine being given the keys to a 605 Stabi with twin 90’s on the back to use as your own for a couple of months- excited! Then Covid came along again, causing delay after delay before I could get over to Havelock to pick it up. Finally, the levels got down to the point that we were allowed

to get out on the water again and I wouldn’t have to risk a story to the boys and girls in blue about how transporting a boat across ‘borders’ was an essential service. So Thursday was the day for pick up. I had a meeting with a builder that afternoon and he mentioned that he was heading down to Christchurch on Friday morning to go racing but he didn’t need to tow his race trailer down as a mate was taking it for him. You can probably see where this is going. I foolishly asked if he would be ok to tow a boat down for me to which he replied “yes” (bugger). So, for a very brief 3.5 hour period I had a boat behind my ute that I towed straight to Mapua to drop off without even getting a chance to look inside, much less get it out on the water. President doesn’t have a boat again.

NEWSLINE UPDATES KE E PI NG YO U I N FORM E D ABO UT N E WS AN D E VE NTS I N TH E TAS MAN DI STRICT

Our 2021 – 2051 Future Development Strategy (FDS) sets out where and how residential and business growth within Nelson and Tasman regions will occur over the next 30 years. We have several webinars coming up where our staff will provide an overview of the project and seek feedback on some key questions. You will also be able to suggest sites for future housing and business development. The upcoming webinars are: • Friday 8 October, 10.00 am – 11.30 am

Your flood history could help us all in the future

Free bus rides make getting a Covid-19 jab easier

We maintain detailed records of floods that occur across the entire region in our hydrological database, but sometimes a mark on a wall or an entry in an old diary can hold valuable historical information that we may not be aware of.

With the support of Waka Kotahi, we're offering free Nbus rides to help residents and their caregivers or dependents attend Covid-19 vaccine appointments and return home afterwards. Our region has one of the highest Covid-19 vaccination rates in the country and we want to continue to lead the way so free buses will help make it as easy as possible for people to protect themselves and their families. The free bus rides to Covid-19 vaccination appointments are available until 31 December 2021. Terms and conditions can be found on our website, tasman.govt.nz, search ‘free bus rides’.

This information has tremendous value and is widely used by both the Council and wider public to reduce the risk of harm to humans and livestock. It’s also a tool widely used by planners to avoid damage to structures, crops and other assets around Tasman. Occasionally we find a record of a flood from long ago which has been marked as a line on someone’s shed or other structure and our hydrological staff are keen to record as many of these marks as possible before they are lost. If you have a mark from a flood long ago and would like it recorded, please contact us on hydro@tasman.govt.nz with your name, contact details, plus the location, along with the date of the flood if known. Alternatively, you can contact us on 03 543 8400 and ask for the Duty Hydrologist.

• Monday 11 October, 6.00 pm – 7.30 pm • Wednesday 13 October, 3.30 pm – 5.00 pm

Grants to support youth

More information, including how to join the webinars, can be found at tasman.govt.nz/fds.

Did you know we offer grants of up to $500 to students in Tasman to participate in youth leadership opportunities? This can be used for activities such as The Spirit of New Zealand, Outward Bound, Festival for the Future, Whenua Iti Outdoors and other experiences, conferences and workshops.

If you have any further queries, please email futuredevelopmentstrategy@tasman.govt.nz.

How should we respond to sea level rise and coastal hazards in Tasman? Many parts of Tasman District’s coastline are vulnerable to storm inundation and/or coastal erosion. We are continuing to work with communities to ensure we’re better prepared for future sea level rise and coastal hazards. Conversations are currently underway to talk about and identify options that enable us to adapt. Our options broadly fit into four categories; accommodate, protect, avoid and retreat. Visit our website to learn more about this project, our broad options, and share your views and ideas: tasman.govt.nz/coastal-management.

The grant is provided to support the personal development of young people living in Tasman. Applications are accepted all year around. To be eligible, you must: • Live in Tasman District. • Be aged between 15 – 20 years.

We manage 518 bridges across the Tasman District and each year some are earmarked for replacement or maintenance. About 30 of these structures, often in rural or more remote areas, have special weight and speed restrictions due to their size, age or unique condition. Occasionally these special restrictions change. Please check our website to ensure you are up to date with the latest information about our bridges. Visit tasman.govt.nz and search ‘bridges’.

New financial reporting structure Changes have been made to which committee we now report our financials to at the Council. From now on these reports will be presented to the Operations Committee instead of the Full Council. Every quarter of the financial year we present a Treasury Update and Quarterly Financial Update. This provides an update of our actual position against the Annual Plan or Tasman's 10-Year Plan 2021 – 2031.

• Provide a report back to us.

The next update will be around November and will ensure we are tracking along the lines set out in Tasman's 10-Year Plan 2021 – 2031 which was adopted on 30 June this year.

Don’t miss the chance to enjoy a potentially life-changing opportunity. Get all the details and make your application now at tasman.govt.nz, search ‘youth leadership grant’.

COUNCIL HUI

• Be applying to a programme / project / training which has a central focus on youth leadership.

Feedback closes on 15 October 2021.

Under Covid-19 restrictions, meetings will take place in person and via Zoom video conferencing. Public forum presenters are required to present via Zoom. Visit tasman.govt.nz/meetings-calendar for the Zoom link.

Coastal Erosion Protection Structures on Council Reserve Land Policy Public consultation on a draft policy around Coastal Erosion Protection Structures on Council Reserve Land is now underway. The policy’s purpose is to try and provide greater clarity to applicants on how to apply for such a structure to be built and also to provide guidance to the Council on granting approval. Consultation is open between Monday 4 October and Friday 29 October. You can read the draft policy on our website, or get a copy from any of our service centres and libraries. You can submit feedback online at tasman.govt.nz/feedback, in writing or by filling out the form and sending it to info@tasman.govt.nz, dropping it in to one of our service centres or libraries, or by posting it to: Coastal Erosion Protection Structures, Tasman District Council, Private Bag 4, Richmond 7050.

What weight is your glass crate? Blue recycling crates are for clear, green or brown clean glass bottles and jars. The contents can’t sit above the top lip of the crate, and it shouldn’t weigh more than 12kg. Glass that sits above the top lip of the crate may seem harmless, but it poses a risk to our drivers and also passing members of the public if it were to fall off while being lifted. Remember too, broken glass in the crate is dangerous and will also result in the crate being rejected.
