Councillors at war
A major scrap has broken out between councillors over the proposed Southern Link, with the latest move being an attempt to remove Eric Davy as chair of the regional transport committee. Five councillors, understood to be led by Luke Acland and Matt Lawrey, have signed a Notice of
Motion attempting to remove Eric from his chairmanship and replace him with deputy chair Ruth Copeland. It comes hard on the heels of Matt blasting mayor Rachel Reese and Eric for sitting on an NZTA focus group during its investigation of the Southern Link and not telling other coun-

cillors. “Their failure to tell the rest of the council and the public of their involvement shows a lack of transparency and openness,” Matt wrote in a press release
yesterday. The Notice of Motion could be heard at the next full council meeting on December 17. Rachel says the concerns raised by Matt are wide of the mark and that the community isn’t interested in “political tantrums”.

Showrooming – it’s when people ‘try out’ merchandise in store and then buy it online for a cheaper price – and Nelson retailers are saying it’s a growing problem, costing them both their time and money. Clothing, shoes and books are just a few of the items that ‘showroomers’ try out offline, before they snap it up online at bargain prices. Last month, Nelson Weekly reported that Nelsonians spend more online than buyers anywhere else in the country, so it comes as no surprise that it’s occurring in the region. Chris Kirby, owner of Cheapskates Nelson says showrooming costs his store around $500 a day. “It’s a generation thing,” he says. “People are more confident shopping online - all they need to do is click a button.” He says that they “blatantly” get

festive decorations, they also bring along toys to be distributed to the region’s children. The toy run began in Richmond, before heading through Stoke and Bishopdale, to finish at
Trafalgar Park car park. As well as the toys to be donated, this year the event issued special badges to mark the 30 year anniversary, with all proceeds also going towards the Salvation Army.

this confirms that.” Matt says that, given the high level of sensitivity around the issue, he was stunned that the mayor and councillor Davy didn’t tell other councillors of their involvement. “It undermines the whole process, particularly as both the mayor and councillor Davy campaigned on building the Southern Link at the last election.” Matt says this “lack of transparency” is highlighted by the fact that Tasman District Council’s representative on the focus group, Trevor Norriss, told his fellow councillors. “I’ll put it down to a first time councillor getting to grips with politics. It’s a learning process, it takes time to understand.” The Notice of Motion is directed at councillor Davy for his alleged role in stopping NZTA speaking with members of the Guardians of Victory lobby group. But Rachel says there was nothing wrong with the contact he made with NZTA. “An NZTA representative has been very clear and has no concerns whatsoever with that contact. What was said was, if you’re going to be speak-
ing with community groups, there are other communities that would want a say and that is entirely appropriate. It’s an example of a good relationship.” She says members of the community will have the opportunity to have their say at one of the next three stages in the investigation of the Southern Link project. “Debate will start at the right time, I have confidence in the process that NZTA are running.” Rachel says she hadn’t had an opportunity to fully investigate the Notice of Motion, but that she was surprised to hear of it. “It’s unusual to see one directed at a colleague. But emotions are high on this particular issue and

Nelsonians are dreaming of new phones and the great outdoors this holiday season, according to Trade Me’s annual list of top ten Christmas searches for the Nelson Bays region. The internet trading site has revealed that the most searched for item in November was the iPhone, followed by kayaks, trampolines, Converse shoes, barbeques, mountain bikes, outdoor furniture, lego, camping and jet boats. “The list has a number of similarities to the nationwide list,” says Trade Me spokesman Logan Mudge. “But it looks like

our Nelson Bays members are even keener on getting outside this summer with mountain bikes and camping coming into the list over Star Wars and PlayStation 4. Clearly, they want some nice kicks too, with Converse shoes making an appearance.” Logan says it is the fifth year running that Apple has dominated Trade Me’s top searches, with iPhones generating hundreds of thousands of searches over the last month.

He also says that Lego sales have gone from strength to strength in the past few years. “December Lego sales have increased 175 per cent from 2008 to 2014, and we expect to see another jump this year.” Other popular searches include adult colouring-in books, drones and Fitbit activity trackers, and Logan says he expects to see a big jump in sales for these in the next few weeks. Gifts that have fallen off the radar from last Christmas include selfie sticks, dogs and puppies, go-carts, Frozen and Minecraft toys and clothing.

Nelson woman dies after fall: A Nelson woman died after falling down stairs at her home on Friday evening. Debbie Marie Hill, aged 49, was found at the base of a staircase about 10.15pm on Friday. She was taken to hospital in a critical condition and passed away about 3.30pm on Saturday. Police have completed an examination of the scene and are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death on behalf of the Coroner. Skinny-dippers rescued: Police had their hands full rescuing two skinny dippers early Friday morning. At 1 am, three teenagers decided to skinny dip at Tahunanui Beach. The teenagers stripped off and waded out on the sand bar near the blind channel at the Western end of Tahunanui Beach. When the tide turned, only the male teenager was able to swim back to the beach, leaving the two young women stranded, with a rising tide. Police officers entered the water and

The vessel is currently under construction at the Damen Shipyard in Changde China and is due for delivery to Nelson in August 2016. At 50 tonnes bollard pull, the new vessel will have significantly more power than either of the existing Port Nelson tugs, the Huria Matenga and the WH Parr. It is estimated that the total project cost will be in the order of $8.6 million by the time the vessel arrives in Nelson next year.

Victory Community Centre in need of help Kate Russell Despite putting out a call for help to the Nelson community over a month ago, the Victory Community Centre is still in need of financial assistance to help it get through a tough time. The centre, which is the hub of the Victory community, needs $60,000 before the end of January to keep it afloat, but so far they have only managed to raise just over $6000. Director Kindra Douglas says, despite all their success and awards over the last eight years, some key funding cycles have changed and their already-limited government funding has also reduced. Previously, the centre has applied to funding bodies such as a
Rata Foundation and the Lottery Grants Board early in the year and then received funds at the end of the year. But with a move to online systems with different closing dates for grants, the centre has been put in a tough spot. Kindra says they could hear back from some of them by February, but it could be later. “We’re running really tight, and it’s not easy,” she says. “We already run on a really lean staff which only includes four full timers, and when we get 42,000 people through the centre every year – that’s a big effort.” Since the centre opened in 2007, it has been a base for many people in Nelson – not just Victory residents - offering recreational,

It is also used by midwives, Plunket, social workers and playgroups. “We are putting a call out to the community to help us,” says Kindra. “How does an award-
winning community struggle so much? People think that because we’re here, the problems have gone away – but that’s not true. We hope we have contributed to lifting the platform in the community, but we want to keep doing that. There are people who are
really struggling to stay afloat.” Kindra also says that it’s not just about the money - it’s also about getting more people on board to help out in other ways, whether it’s helping to make cups of tea or helping out on a newly-formed fund-raising team which Kindra is also looking for people to join. “We rely on all these helpers, and our aim is to create a long-term fundraising team to organise some regular events. We’ve got some really good ideas.” In the meantime, Kindra says they will get through, no matter what. “We’re not going to close – it’s not an option. We’ll just have to find the resources.” To help the Victory Community Centre visit www.victorycommunitycentre.co.nz

their phones out in his store to compare prices to online clothing websites, or photograph the QR codes. He has even had people come in trying to swap shoes they’ve brought online and been disgruntled that they won’t oblige. “What people need to realise is that our staff spend valuable time on these customers who don’t end up buying anything,” he
says. “We know who’s doing it around Nelson, and the retailers do talk to each other.” Chris says they have tried to combat the issue by setting up an online shop, and have moved to only selling snowboarding gear online, as fitting it in-store was taking up too much staff time. They also use a loyalty system, where shoppers can get discounts after so many purchases. Chris also notes that when the proposed GST is added to online purchases, it will
bring a more even playing field. Showrooming has also been a problem for other shops in the city, including shoe store Soul and Mariposa. Owner Tracey Brignole says it’s a “big issue” for them, and has forced them into implementing a $20 fitting charge for regular showroomers. Another Nelson retailer, Avery Dash, owner and founder of Possibilities, says that showrooming is also a big problem in his

alternative book and gift shop. “It mostly happens with books - people come in and treat them roughly and take a picture of the back or the front,” he says. “I’m quite strict, so if I see them taking a photo I go over and ask them why, tell them to delete the photo and to leave.” “Not only does it take up the shopkeeper’s time, but it also wears out the items. People need to be made aware that if they lose these shops, they lose the expertise.”

Southern Link progresses to The investigation of the controversial Southern Link will proceed to the next stage of study after NZTA released its strategic business case on Friday, which highlighted a need for the road. But although the news is encouraging for its supporters, it is by no means a done deal, with the project needing to progress through three more complex stages before it can move through to implementation. The road is estimated to cost between $40 and $50 million and was first mooted in the 1960s. It would take traffic from St Vincent St to Whakatu Drive, running right through the middle of Victory and up the Railway Reserve. In 2004, the Environment Court declined to approve the road because of the proximity of the route to schools, social severance, air quality degradation and a lack of evidence that it would improve safety and efficiency. Friday’s report was prepared by NZTA’s principal transport planner Andrew James and re-
Kate Russell Reporter

viewed by senior staff, and says there is peak hour congestion on Nelson’s two existing arterial routes. It also says the road has the potential to contribute to Nelson and regional economic growth and productivity, and improve tourism and recreational activities. Supporters of the road say that it will take traffic off Rocks Rd, allowing it to become a worldclass promenade. But those against it believe there is not enough traffic to justify spending millions of dollars on a new road and that it will be damaging to the Victory community - splitting it in half, disrupting a number of schools and kindergartens, and increasing pollution levels. The project will now progress to the next phase, which is a programme business case. A key part of this process is engagement with local communities, business, stakeholders and the general public, which will be done early next year.
“
This is about as far from a robust evidential exercise as you can get. There is no doubt whatever in my mind that Nelson is being subjected yet again to a toxic and divisive debate. This is a jack-up and we are paying for it. - John Moore, Guardians of Victory.
“
People are frustrated by congestion and lack of resilience in our existing roading network. They also see the huge opportunities that this new road will create. - Craig Dennis, Progress Nelson Tasman.

Lanterns to light up Centre of New Zealand Glitter, paint and LED tea lights are strewn across the Community Art Works’ tables in preparation for the annual Lantern Celebration on Saturday. The ‘Journey to the Stars’ themed Lantern Celebration is a lantern-lit walk up the Centre of New Zealand from 7-9 pm on Saturday night. People are invited to bring a lantern and dress up according to the theme. Nelson City Coun-

Nelson property prices have continued their up-ward march, according to the latest Quotable Value House Price Index. The November index shows the average home in the city is now worth $424,022, with Nelson residential property values rising two per cent over the past three months. Nelson home values have increased 3.6 per cent since the same time last year. QV Nelson Registered Valuer Craig Russell says the Nelson property market is expected to continue to show moderate value level increases. Local charity shops say they are sick of being treated like a rubbish dump and also of having donated goods stolen from the curb side. Nelson Weekly spoke with several charity shop managers who reported having disgusting second-hand clothes dropped at their doorstep. Nelson’s St Vincent de Paul volunteer Lois Palmer says they often get rubbish dumped outside overnight. “One of the worst things we’ve been given was some flyblown meat, crawling with maggots and wrapped up in a quilt. I had to clean it up and it took quite a while because the maggots were all over the ground,” says Lois. Lois says they spend $180 each month on a skip bin to dispose of all the rubbish. Lois says the shop also has people go through the stuff that gets dumped. “People often say, ‘did you get that table I left?’ but, of course,
the table has walked off down the road with someone else. The good stuff gets taken and they just scatter the bad stuff across the road." Nelson Tasman Hospice shop manager Karen MacKenzie-Howe says they often have "disgusting" items dumped. The Richmond store is one of five hospice shops around the NelsonTasman region staffed by a manager and volunteers who help raise funds for the hospice. Although Karen says the majority of people donate clean, good quality secondhand clothes, a small minority continue to leave damaged or dirty clothing. The latest collection of unsuitable clothing was left outside the Queen St store last week and Karen says "the stench was unbearable". "When I opened one of the bags it was just filth. There was vomit and disgusting stains on some of the clothes. It's not fair on our volunteers having to handle this stuff."

Founders Christmas Market, Tuesday, November 25: Founders Heritage Park was full to bursting at the Great Christmas Market on Sunday, November 22. Event organiser, Paula Layton says they had over six thousand people walk through the door to do some Christmas shopping, enjoy the live music and have a picnic lunch in the park. With around 110 boutique stalls including art, homewares, crafts, clothes and food, Paula says this is definitely the market’s biggest year yet. Paula says that on average, each stall made over $1000, “Thats over $100,000 supporting small businesses and going back into the local economy.” The Great Christmas Market is also able to donate $1500 to the KidsCan charity thanks to the door donations. Surprise pregnancy, Tuesday, December 1: Since their story in the Nelson Weekly, new parents Eamon Parkes and Charlene Wells have been on Australian television after the morning show, Sunrise Australia, tracked Eamon down through Facebook. The couple did a live cross to the morning show talking about the surprise birth of their son Carlo. The pair would also like to say how grateful they are to all the support they have received since Carlo’s arrival.

The winners of the Port Nelson and Nelson City Council ‘Harbour Master for a Day’ competition have been announced. The competition was run in the Nelson Weekly two weeks ago. Entrants were required to colour in a picture of the Harbour Master’s boat and name some safety equipment that must be carried on a boat. Winners, Josh Whiting, Sophie Tee and Kade Baty were thrilled to have won the competition. Josh’s mum says Josh was excited when he heard the news. “He loves boats, I could send him out in the morning and he’d happily be out on the water all day.” The three winners were given a free

They’ll tick off a checklist and hand out rewards to boats that have all the required safety equipment and then, if there’s a speedster or a gangster, we’ll chase him in the harbour master’s boat,” says Dave. “The reason we do this is to educate the parents. There is no better tool than one of the young people saying ‘hey mum’ or ‘hey dad, I’ve got my life jacket on, why don’t you?’”

Opera in the Park not opera at all: Opera in the Park? The title is now inappropriate and misleading. It isn't Opera in the Park, and isn't it cheating the public to claim this? The year that the yodelling, camping-it-up Topp Twins (no - they are not " a national icon") were put side-by-side with one of Britain's wonderful top tenors was cringe-making. Let's have some real Opera in the Park or call this just what it is - basically pop music. Not the same thing at all, and a lot of us won't be going. What about some debate around this? Morag Woode.
New dam? Forget it. OK, Brian Gower [a correspondent from last week's Weekly], If you would build a new dam where would you build it? If the NCC proposed another dam today, the objectors would turn out in their hundreds fully prepared to crawl over broken glass to stop it being built, just as they did with the Maitai Dam in the eighties. The original cost of the Maitai Dam was in the low millions. About three or four million dollars. By the time someone I think Peter Malone - got the guts to override the objectors the cost had risen to multi millions and it didn't cost the objectors a cent, but it did the rest of the ratepayers. The sooner objections are bonded with something like ten thousand dollars an objection to help offset the increased cost caused by the objection, is when the objectors will think twice about objecting to everything. A
new dam, Southern Link, Rocks Rd, Forget them, mate, they're not going to happen until Nelson has a new population. Wilf Tunney.
Grab a Gig: Huge thanks to the organisers of Grab a Gig! I am so thrilled that the Bridge Street Collective will be able to offer this to our members and our wider community. Galen King. Cyclist Bill Higgins will be missed: Bill was my neighbour and a wonderful man. He and his wife Jean would do anything for anyone. What a tragic accident. My thoughts are with Jean and her family. You will be missed, Bill. Rebecca Blackler. Aw, that's sad. I knew Bill and Jean when I was 16. RIP Bill, and my sincere condolences to you, Jean. Dale Milne. Nelmac enforces recycle rules: They left all my recycling and my neighbour's (nothing in there that's not meant to be), wasn't impressed. Most of us are well behaved and still get punished. Sarah Davis. I walk every day and some of the stuff I notice people trying to dump on Nelmac is ridiculous, I don't blame them for enforcing rules. Trouble is, when stuff isn't picked up it stays on the sidewalk and the people who put it out don't take it back. Brenda Kenny.

Southern Link: Just another load of rubbish from page one. What congestion? Full of crap and jellybeans (for the link lovers). Errol Millar. I trust everyone who wants to cut 3 minutes of their daily commute is willing to pay through the nose for it. Johny O'Donnell. I like it - Rocks Rd has not really been constructed to handle the volume of heavy vehicles that pass to/from Port or other areas - get the heavy vehicles onto a main route to go about their business and the remaining roads will be more free for light vehicles and bikes, etc. In my mind it's not really about 3 or 4 minutes time saving, it's about connecting Nelson and taking Nelson into the future and not remaining 'tired' because people are scared of change. The community around Victory will be affected (I live nearby, so have an interest also), but the key will be for the Victory area to have some input into how it is built, so there can be some compromise. So many people say 'no, what about the schools' - agree, the schools shouldn't be negatively impacted or risked, but shouldn't we see what the plan is before jumping to conclusions? If it really is good for the region as a whole, shouldn't we look at it? Lisa De Gray. To have your say on any local issue, email editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz.

Avid Opera, the St Stephens Band and Rockquest winners, Tetra. Carols by the Beach is in its third year and is run by St Stephens Community Church, the Tahunanui Community Centre and the Tahunanui Business Association.
St Stephens' Youth Pastor, Brad Wood, says the community enjoy gathering together to see local talent and check out what is happening in Tahunanui. “It’s a great opportunity to come together with friends and family and just enjoy an afternoon out with some great music, great
variety, some food, some fun - there’s something for everyone.” Last year over 400 people turned up, despite the rain. However, if the weather decides not to cooperate this year, the event will be postponed until Saturday, December 19.
A Nelson professor has been appointed as chief science advisor to the Ministry of Health. Professor John D Potter has had a distinguished career in cancer research, most recently at the Centre for Public Health Research at Massey University’s Wellington campus. He will start his new role on January 7 and it has been welcomed by Professor Sir Peter Gluckman, the Prime Minister’s chief science advisor, and the Ministry’s director-general Chai Chuah. “Professor Professor Potter is eminently John Potter. qualified to add to the high quality advice the Ministry is constantly seeking," says Mr Chuah. "His experience in scientific research will allow him to challenge the thinking processes we use in delivering core health values.” Professor Potter says New Zealand has many strengths in its healthcare infrastructure but there are places where further attention to prevention and early detection will pay dividends.

Group boosted by Tindall partnership Simon Bloomberg The Nelson Bays Community Foundation has strengthened its relationship with one of the country’s biggest charitable foundations by forming a partnership to cover funding applications across the top of the South Island. NBCF was launched in 2010, with support from the Tindall Foundation, to encourage people to contribute funds for the benefit of community groups in Nelson and Tasman. Last week, the Tindall Foundation reinforced that commitment by appointing NBCF as a partner to support their Families and Social Services Programme in Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough. The Tindall Foundation’s Martina O’Driscoll says NBCF will initially have an advisory role, assessing
and monitoring requests on behalf of their foundation and making recommendations for funding. She says the Tindall Foundation has adopted the same approach across the country and it is “hugely successful”. “We have been following the progress of NBCF since it launched in 2010 and our team is delighted to strengthen this relationship. We have appointed NBCF as our regional partner to support our Families and Social Services Programme across the top of the South Island. “This way of working allows the Tindall Foundation to engage with credible organisations close to their communities, trusting them to distribute and recommend funding on our behalf. This ensures funds are delivered

communities across the country. NBCF chairperson Julie Varney says the new partnership is “a significant milestone for NBCF and recognises the progress we have achieved”. “This partnership with the
Tindall Foundation represents a step-change in our growth, and will enable us to distribute significantly more funds into the community from 2016. “NBCF representatives are extremely grateful to the Tindall Foundation for its support of our activities, and the confidence they have shown in partnering with us.” David Kerr from NBCF says they plan to hold two funding rounds a year, with applications for the first round under the new partnership closing on February 16. Community groups are encouraged to apply well in advance to allow time to complete the registration and the preliminary application process. Details of the application criteria can be found on the websites www.tindall.org.nz and www. nbcg.org.nz

It’s a showhome that sets high standards, reflecting the quality workmanship that the company is renowned for and showcases many of the products and special features that characterise Endeavour Homes’ mission as a design and building partner. “We have built Endeavour Homes on its reputation as a quality building partner, and that reputation is something we continually strive to meet and grow upon,” says company director Dick Baker. “It’s a competitive industry and we are well aware that people have plenty of choice when they are shopping around for someone to help build their new home. Our goal, therefore, is not only to deliver on our promises, but to do so to
a very high standard. The foundation of our reputation is our commitment to those practices, and our growth as a company is a direct result of our good name. It’s not only a status to live up to, but also something we continually seek to advance on, and this new showhome is a statement of who we are and what we can do – for you.” The showhome is a must see for anyone who is considering building and will leave no doubt in your mind as to who you can trust with the construction of your dream home. Endeavour Homes have created a fine model displaying what a mixture of sensible and creative design can do when it is executed by accomplished quality-focused trades people.

New airlines make air travel easier
NW: Was there much fanfare for the first flight? AB: In the airport, yes. A cake, speeches and plenty of excitement. It’s a big deal and I’m glad that as a region we recognise that. NW: What was the first flight like? AB: Honestly, it was just like any other flight. The flight attendant was obviously nerv-

Something passengers need to be aware of though is that you have to pre-pay for snacks and drinks, some passengers were a bit confused when they didn’t get a snack but the person sitting next to them did! NW: Are the planes comfortable? AB: Yes, living in Nelson I’ve flown on much smaller planes. The Q300s take 50 passengers and the flight was full but comfortable. NW: How was Auckland? NW: Highlight of the trip? AB: Sky Tower was good but the people-watching in the CBD was the definite highlight. When I was walking down Queen St I saw a big Polynesian man walking towards me with short hair, stubble and wearing a dress with a handbag. Nelson Weekly: You’ve been campaigning for more competition for Nelson air travellers for some time. Are you happy now? Andrew Board: Yes, although we certainly got more than we bargained for. It was quite hard case being at the airport with so many airlines now crammed in there. It’s great though, great for Nelsonians wanting to travel and great for tourism.
been into the city before. I’ve only flown out of Auckland before so it was nice to see the city and go up the Sky Tower. It was better than I thought it would be. I’m hoping that the arrival of Jetstar and the other airlines will mean Nelsonians will be able to head to places like Auckland for events and even a weekend away. Before it was $400-odd dollars per person to get up there and back, it was literally cheaper to go to Australia. Now places like Auckland become affordable.

Local dairy businesses team up Two is always stronger than one, which is why Oaklands Milk has partnered up with Gelato Roma to bring locals a whole lot of dairy goodness. Yuri Aristarco of Gelato Roma and Milk Drop came up with the proposal and now both he and Julian Raine of Oaklands Milk invite everyone, from cafes, restaurants, produce growers and faithful foodies, to join them in showcasing not just milk, but the whole of the region’s wonderful produce. “My idea was to partner with somebody not as big as Fonterra or other milk brands and also I was looking for great quality milk, and Oakland milk is one of the top,” says Yuri. “I think this is a great way of adding value to what is produced here in Nelson, not just my gelato but the milk, instead of drying it out and sending it overseas,” says Yuri. “We should do as much as we can to add value here in New Zealand, specifically Nelson,” says Julian. As well as providing Yuri with fresh milk, Julian also supplies a number of local cafés and restaurants, and is about to install his sixth milk vending machine in the Tahuna Motorcamp so “that visitors to Nelson can experience our wonderful milk and Yuri’s gelato.” Yuri also has gelato locations from Kaikoura to Golden Bay and says that he is keen to hear from any local business that is interested in working with him to enhance both his and their products, such as nuts or berries. Anyone interested in joining forces with the two businesses can contact Yuri on 022 099 6754.

BE SAFE THIS SUMMER
With summer finally here, The Nelson Weekly, in conjunction with local businesses, has put together a guide to staying safe this summer to make sure you and your family stay safe during what is a busy time of year. Beat the heat and Sun
Just a few serious sunburns can increase you and your child's chance of skin cancer later in life. Their skin needs protection from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays whenever they’re outdoors. Remember to cover up. Clothing that covers you and your child’s skin helps protect against UV rays. Use sunscreen with at least SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 and UVA (Ultraviolet A) and UVB
(Ultraviolet B) protection every time you and your child go outside.
Swim Safe
Wait at least 48 hours after heavy rainfall before swimming, Avoid swimming near storm drains or sewage pipes. Remember to swim between the flags and keep small children within arm’s reach. Take care when fishing, especially on surf beaches. Always wear a lifejacket when fishing, don’t fish alone and don’t turn your back on the waves. Wear a lifejacket on boats and ensure children are wearing age-appropriate life jackets.
CPR Training and Eventing
‘Keeping the life in your training’ Kathy Gill 021 144 8236 Vanessa Fraser 027 868 5012 info@cprtrain.co.nz
Be safe this summer and make sure you do a First Aid course. Corporate Public Response (C.P.R) Training and Eventing are a new business, owned and operated by Kathy Gill and Vanessa Fraser. Kathy and Vanessa are PHEC qualified instructors with over 20 years combined experience with NZ Fire Service, St John, NZ Red Cross and Fire and Rescue NZ. Together they deliver practical, theoretical first aid training, either within or outside your work environment. Their training is designed to meet the needs of your organisation, or the individual who wants to be able to help themselves, family and others in a first aid situation. Kathy and Vanessa are proud to offer fun, easy to learn training that will build your knowledge and confidence. CPR Training and Eventing can provide one hour first aid talks, through to NZQA unit standard qualified courses, thanks to assistance from Nelson Technical Institute, and are available to support the community with first aid cover at events.

VTNZ
More people trust VTNZ for their vehicle assessments than anyone else. The teams at Vanguard Street and Pascoe Street can help keep you on the road and make sure that your vehicle is safe this summer. Our inspectors are qualified mechanics with a wealth of knowledge and a passion for cars - so come in and relax while the team gets your vehicle in check. Wherever you’re heading this summer, if you haven’t had your vehicle looked at recently, we recommend a Safety Essentials Inspection. For just $29, our team will check off all the most common causes of accidents, such as your brakes, tyres, lights, and steering. We’ll even check your windscreen washer and wipers. Take charge of your safety on the road – bring your vehicle down to your local VTNZ station this summer.
POOL OWNERS' CHECK LIST
Nelson City Council is making great progress inspecting all Nelson pools and most now meet the requirements of the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act. Don’t forget to do your own regular checks to ensure your pool is safe and secure to minimise the chance of drowning. My pool fence/barrier is at least 1.2 metres all
the way around the pool. My pool gates/doors self close and latch from 150 millimetres and the latch is at least 1.5 metres high or can only be accessed by reaching over the gate. I have no openings in the pool barrier greater than 100 millimetres. I have a backflow preventer on the tap I use for maintaining my pools water level so I don’t risk contaminating my household water supply.
I don’t have anything climbable closer than 1.2 metres
from the fence/barrier. (Check over the boundary fence. My neighbour hasn’t inadvertently created a ladder by stacking things against the fence). I only have pool related activities in the pool area. It’s not a good place to plant my vegetable garden. Search swimming pools at www.nelson.govt.nz and see what else I can do to keep my pool safe or contact the Pool Compliance Officer (ph 546 0200) if you have any questions.
Remember your Christmas present pop up pool also has to meet the requirements if the water level is deeper than 400mm.

Fifteen year old Stella Hampton has added herself to Nelson’s long list of New Zealand sporting representatives, but her sport of choice isn’t netball, volleyball, touch or even softball. Stella is a weightlifter. The Nelson College for Girls student picked up the sport a year ago and hasn't looked back. Her rapid development has seen her pick up three national titles and more recently she was selected to represent New Zealand at an Olympic Weightlifting training camp in New Caledonia. She says she first thought about weightlifting as a way to work out, but her father Paul Hampton “forced” her to learn the technique properly first. “And then I just got the hang of it quite easily and then took it from there. It’s quite an easy sport to see your progress, obviously your numbers get higher, so that’s rewarding and you feel stronger, and they are good people to be around.” Stella joined the Nelson Weightlifting Club and trains with them at Results gym up to six times a week. She admits there aren’t too many other 15 year old girls lining up
to take up the sport. “I haven’t met one other in Nelson and when I tell people that I do weightlifting I usually get ‘I wouldn’t have thought that’, it is odd coz I’m not exactly a built girl.” Her selection for the New Zealand team “was a shock”, as she didn’t know about the training camp or that they were even looking at her. “I had no idea and I just came back from a competition that I didn’t do too well at, so it was very surprising actually. “I got a bit teary.” Her selection is particularly impressive considering the lingering effects of a virus earlier this year means Stella can’t even feel her hands or feet. “My hands and feet are numb all the time, from nerve damage or something. It was an auto immune issue and it affected the nervous system – completely separate from weightlifting. It used to send, like, electric shocks up and down my arms and legs when I did a lift, but now it’s not that bad.” Stella says she’d “love” to go to the Olympics one day but isn’t getting ahead of herself. She would also like to thank Fit Superstore Richmond for sponsoring her.

Major sponsor for Top Team Sport Tasman has welcomed ASB on board as naming rights sponsor of the popular Top Team primary school sports event. Involving 4200 students from more than 32 schools across Blenheim, Nelson, Richmond and Westport, ASB Top Team has become one of the Tasman region’s most popular student competitions, promoting a fun approach to sport regardless of sporting ability. Participation in the fun, multi activity tournament continues to grow each year and has at-
tracted record entries for the 2015/2016 season. Schools see between 100 and 200 of their pupils compete against each other in the competition. Smaller schools are encouraged to combine their events to reach the minimum 100. In 2013 Top Team merged into a solely schoolbased event with Sport Tasman delivering the programme on site at each school. NelsoN speedway December 1 marked the start of summer, and that means speedway season has begun. If you’re a speedway fan then you’re going to love what Nelson Speedway has got lined up for the evenings of December 11 and 12 and, even if you’re new to the action packed world of speedway, introduce yourself to the sport that really knows how to entertain. With pre-season laps and the season opening Trackman Trophy night well behind them, drivers are now looking forward to the thrill and carnage of two whole nights of teams racing as the Nelson Speedway presents the Jacks Tyres Stockcar Teams Brawl. Huge thanks must be giv-
en to Jack, Karen and the team at Jacks Tyres for getting behind the new promotion, making it possible for Nelson Speedway to bring fans the biggest weekend of teams racing that Frosty’s Towing Top of the South Speedway has seen in a long time. There are four stockcar teams entered for the event, each one looking forward to leaving their fellow opposition behind in the dust and taking home the title and accompanying rewards. The competition will include hometown favourites the Black Fasteners Tasman Thunder, though they will have their work cut out for them thanks to some stiff competition from neighbouring
team, Eastern States Titans of Blenheim. Nelson will also receive representation during the teams brawl thanks to the newly formed Anzac Autowash Nelson Lightning. This team will be out to make a name for itself and is certainly not there just to make up the numbers. Team number four taking part in the full-on, double night of action will be none other than old arch rivals from Christchurch, the Canterbury Crushers. With competition of this quality on the cards, there’s no doubt the Jacks Tyres Stockcar Teams Brawl will be an un-missable two days. Friday night will see all four teams take part in qualifying

There is always unmissable action to be seen at Nelson Speedway so make sure you get your tickets for the Jacks Tyres Stockcar Teams Brawl. Barry Whitnall/www.shuttersport.co.nz rounds, and if that isn’t enough to tempt you along, the track will also see racing from the Canterbury Cobras streetstock team and our very own Nelson Knights. If team racing gets your blood pumping, Frosty’s Towing Top of the South Speedway will have it in abundance and, for the non-contact fans out there, the Production Saloons will be contesting the second round of their club championship too.
If Friday sounded like a great night out, you won’t want to be sitting at home on Saturday when the remaining round robin for the Jacks Tyres Stockcar Teams Brawl will be carried out. That’s followed by the finals when each team will be doing everything they can to win the $3000, the trophy and the bragging rights. With ACDC holding their concert the same weekend, the track may indulge in a little ‘Thunderstruck,’ should the Tasman

Powerlifter wins medals at Commonwealth Champs Nelson powerlifter Michelle Welsh claimed three bronze medals on Thursday at the 2015 Powerlifting Commonwealth Champs in Vancouver. Michelle took home two bronze medals for her 137.5kg squat and her 67.5kg bench press, as well as a large bronze medal for placing third overall in her Under 84kg Female category. Michelle says she is absolutely stoked with the result.
“I didn’t come to medal, I came to compete against myself and do the best I could and I did, I came away with third place which I was really shocked and stoked with.” “The whole time I just focused on the lift and heard my coach Jason's voice in my head’.” Michelle, who was featured in Nelson Weekly last month, is chalking up her podium moment as the most overwhelming experience of her life.
“Standing on that podium when they played the national anthem, draped in the New Zealand flag – it just brings tears to your eyes, it's a big, big feeling.” Michelle’s coach Jason Hylkema followed the competition from Nelson. “It’s a bit tough being a coach and not being able to be there, but we were in contact the whole time, messaging back and forth. “We knew that if she lifted against herself and lifted well, it would probably put her
into medal contention. I’m stoked for her, and I’m so happy that all the hard training has paid off.” And as for what’s next on the cards, Jason says Michelle is keen to push it to the next level and that probably involves qualifying for Worlds. “She’ll achieve whatever she wants to achieve. Once she makes a decision, it’s pretty hard to stop her from doing it.”

Stoke - Saxton Field - Stoke - Enner Glynn - Nayland Road.
The summer surf life-saving patrols got off to a wintery start in Nelson on Sunday with life guards putting up the yellow and red flags on a rain-swept Tahnuna Beach. The Nelson Surf Life Saving Club started their summer beach patrols at Tahuna on Sunday after finishing their Nippers training programme in the morning. Club captain Aaron Lyttle says the lifeguards will be back on the beach every weekend throughout the summer as well

as public holidays over Christmas. "We'll be patrolling the whole beach, but we'll be putting up the flags opposite the Tahuna playground so we want people to swim there because it's safest," Aaron says. "We'll have at least three or four lifeguards on duty at any one time and will be there through to mid-March." Aaron says the club has 30 trained lifeguards with another 10 trainees who will sit their exams on December 20.
The club also has about 50, seven to 13 year olds in their Nippers programme who have been training since the start of November. The Nippers will be holding their first carnival of the season at Tahuna this Sunday with surf swimming, beach races and board events. Aaron says the highlight of the season will be a carnival on January 23-24 when clubs from around the top of the South Island and Christchurch will compete at Tahuna.

Christmas in the Gardens this Sunday It’s Christmas time and what better way to celebrate than by relaxing and listening to carols in a beautiful setting. The sixth Christmas in the Gardens is being held on Sunday, December 13, from 4pm to 6pm at the Gardens of the World in Hope. The Nelson City Brass Band will entertain the crowds with carols and other popular songs, and guest singer Trudi Wilson will perform a few songs with the band and some solo numbers. If you enjoy singing along to carols, you’ll get your chance to join in with the band. Santa will be making a special appearance and there will be a chance to have free photos with him. If you’re feeling hungry, barbecued sausages and ice cream will be available to buy.
One of the organisers, David Todd of Nelson City Brass Band, is looking forward to the concert. “We enjoy playing for the public in what is a great setting. It’s a pleasure to be presenting both Christmas music and other popular numbers we know people love.” “Just 12 days out from Christmas, it’s the perfect time for families to relax for a couple of hours and enjoy the music and the surroundings,” says David. At a glance: When: Sunday, December 13 Where: Gardens of the World, Corner of Patons Road and Clover Road, Hope Entry fee: $15 for families, $5 for adults. Sausage sizzle and ice cream: Cash only
Fishing with
Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Dawnbreakers club member Amy Dell had a clean-up with a great catch! One of the few opportunities she's had to go fishing this year was for the Tasman Bay Anglers' monster fishing competition. It was an early start with very little sleep due to anticipation, Amy said. Amy and hubby met up at the boat ramp with her brother-in-law and his wife Bec early on the morning, from where they headed to an area thought to hold some larger fish. Once they got there, they found the boys from Big Blue had the same thought and had beaten them there. They anchored up and the fishing
started. It wasn’t long before Josh and Bec were on to good fish and on the other side could see Big Blue getting their net, only to realise their anchor wasn’t holding. The fishing was good but the wind picked up. It didn’t stop coming so they decided to head back in. They were lucky to get on to some fish straight away because the rest of the day became almost impossible to catch fish. Her biggest fish of the day was 5.66kgs which won Amy 1st place heaviest snapper and a Bradley smoker sponsored by Nulook, thanks to Jason for the generous prize!
