Singing up at Stepping Out event

It was hard to tell who was having more fun, the acts on stage or the families that turned up to watch them. But with about 80 families taking part in this year’s Stepping Out in Tahunanui, organiser Trish Duthie is going to give it to the spectators, just. Stepping Out in Tahunanui is a free family event that gives local families a chance to visit and participate in dozens of activities around the suburb before putting on a party at Burrell Park, next to the Tahunanui Community Centre. Those that visit the activities get their entry form stamped with all entries going into a prize draw at the end of the day. Trish says entries were about the same last year and the entertainment had a strong crowd sticking around until the 4pm prize draw. “The entry box was packed, it was really good.” Trish says the day was hugely rewarding and shows the community spirit in Tahuna. “It was fantastic, it really was. Such great weather and such a great turn out. I’m thrilled with how it went.” Providing entertainment were the Plinkers, Off Your Rockers, Belly Dancers, the Celtic Band and Tahunanui School students who performed their Jump Jam routine.Earlier in the day famiSING IT LOUD: Off Your Rockers singer Italina Sowman performs at lies could have a go at 14 differStepping Out in Tahunanui on Sunday. Nelson man leading the way in internet safety FROM PAGE 1 John says he has seen the effects of cybercrime in Nelson and how it can damage people’s lives. “What we do isn’t an IT thing; it is about health and safety, keeping people safe. Things you should watch out for and things you should not do.” He talks about one Nelson family that had a younger member make friends with a person via an online game. That friendship lead to the child sending photos of themself to the predator, thinking it was a person of the opposite sex. John says it took a family effort to cut ties, learn how to protect themselves and move forward. “This kind of thing can be absolutely devastating for families,” he says. Nelson senior constable John O’Donovan has the highest praise for John’s work and says all internet users should listen to him.

Nelson bids to be world cup host... again With the successful hosting of the Rugby World Cup now over, Nelson City Council is lining up another massive international tournament for the city. New Zealand is set to host the 2015 FIFA under 20 world cup, known as the Youth World Cup. Hosting rights will go to either six or eight cities around the country and last week Nelson threw its hat into the ring, tabling a formal application to host games. Yannis, 7, Anik, 5, and Mika Hervel, 9, attend The Friends of the Nelson Library big book sale. The Hervel family left the library with a bag full of books. Photo: Jonathan McKeown.

Library clear out a good read The Friends of the Nelson Library sold well over 1000 books and raised more than $2400 from the three-day big book sale at Elma Turner Library over the weekend. “We are quite delighted with the result,” says Pricilla Wardell, treasurer of the Friends of the Nelson Library. The result was even more impressive, given that most books were on sale from between 50 cents and two dollars. Running from Friday to Sunday, it was

often hard to move around the literature laden tables as people squeezed in to find a bargain. “It was very busy with all the people and so many books,” says Pricilla. However it was certainly no jumble, with the books sorted into genres from a children’s section to biographies and astronomy. The big sale is an annual event but if you happened to miss out over the weekend there is a smaller sale on the first Saturday of every month.

Tahunanui hillside residents’ efforts to establish a pedestrian refuge over Rocks Rd by Days Track are a step closer with the council now inviting feedback from the public on the project. The proposed refuge will mean the loss of 13 car parks on the seaward side of the road but a canvas of residents in the affected area has shown most residents are willing to compromise parks to ensure safety. Residents and neighbours, Ellie Fijn and Peter Butler say they approached 27 homes in the area, of which 25 said they were happy to see the car parks go if it meant a pedestrian refuge could be installed. “Residents signed letters to the council saying they were happy to sacrifice the car parks for a pedestrian refuge even though they knew visitors to their homes would be compromised,” says Peter. A parking survey designed by NCC Transport and Roading Advisor, Andrew James, to identify car park usage along the proposed strip was completed last Summer over the

peak swimming period. The survey showed the number of car parks used daily varied from zero to 17 (averaging 2.1 parks daily), and usage related to weather and tide conditions. Many swimmers come over the hill down Days Track and residents have watched vulnerable unaccompanied children attempting to cross the road. On one occasion, residents counted 100 swimmers and only eight cars parked. The nearest crossing is at Tahunanui by the Lion’s playground. Ellie and Peter are pleased with the latest progress but are frustrated with the delays, considering campaigning for it began in 2004. “Safety is paramount,” says Ellie. “The car parks immediately opposite Days Track should go. You cannot see through larger vehicles like vans to step out safely. Let’s get Rocks Road safe to cross this Summer.” The public are being asked to say whether they want the pedestrian refuge or they would prefer to keep the car parks. Feedback to the council at 546 0200 or enquiries@ncc.govt.nz will close on November 18.

Making a mini motorbike for NCEA credits sounds like a pretty sweet deal – just ask Nelson College’s Tom Rainey, who managed to land a national championship with his. The 18 year-old built a mini motorbike in industrial engineering, a year 13 subject at the school, and just months later found himself racing away to a national title at Feilding’s Manfeild Raceway for the 2011 Mini Moto Grand Prix last month. The Mini Moto Grand Prix tests secondary school student’s mechanical engineering skills as well as their riding prowess. Students throughout the country must only compete on a bike they have built themselves. There were five different classes in the race, Tom’s had 50 riders in it. Tom says he paid $380 in term one for the kit to begin the building process and he never thought he’d end up racing it, let along winning a national championship with it. “It’s kind of a laugh seeing it’s a tiny motorbike. Everyone sees it as a joke more than being serious,” he says. The bike can reach speeds of more than 70 kph. His results will also earn him a prestigious Board of Trustees Medallion at Nelson College. Industrial engineering teacher Jeremy Classen says the project has been running for three years. Twenty students started the project this year, with 15 completing it. Just three competed in the national championship. “There’s a lot of satisfaction for them to design something, put a motor in it and actually race it,” says Jeremy.

Passion wins NZ personality award for bar owner Andrew Board Ron Taylor has been a personality on Nelson’s hospitality scene for about 22 years, now he is officially recognised as New Zealand’s personality of the year in the sector. He picked up the award at the Hospitality Association of New Zealand Awards for Excellence in Christchurch last week. In a double-whammy for the nightclub owner, his Little Rock Bar also won the Outstanding Host Responsibility category. “It was a real shock, especially the personality one; I had no idea and my jaw just dropped. It took me a while to recover, that is a big award,” says Ron. Other Nelson businesses were finalists in the prestigious awards but didn’t come home with any trophies. Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco was a finalist in the Best Accommodation Hotel category, which it won last year, and in the Customer Service section while its restaurant, Orangerie, was also a finalist in the Best Restaurant section. Mint Dining Room was also a finalist in Best Beef and

NEWS IN BRIEF MONTGOMERY SQUARE: Nelson City Council last week voted to revoke its previous decision to take no further action on the Montgomery Square upgrade project. Council will now undertake a thorough community consultation to ascertain whether the community supports the upgrade project and if so, what form the improvements should take. The U-turn was prompted by a notice of motion brought by councillor Pete Rainey and signed by six other councillors. The original project was shelved in September following the High Court decision prohibiting council from accepting tenders to carry out the work proposed and directing council to undertake further consultation if it wished to proceed. AOS CALLOUT: A 23 year-old Nelson man has been arrested following a domestic incident on Sunday. The Armed Offenders Squad was called to a property in Beatson Rd about 10.45am where the man was located with a shotgun and arrested without incident. He has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and assault on a female. DUN TRAIL TO OPEN: Nelson City Council and Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust is hosting the opening of the Dun Mountain Trail this Saturday. After an opening Karakia (prayer), a Putatārā (conch shell trumpet), speeches and ribbon cutting there will be an official ride of the track. The Dun Mountain Trail upgrade is a part of the governments national cycleway project with Nelson City Council also contributing towards the upgrade. PORT NELSON RESULT: Port Nelson produced an after tax profit of $6.6 million this financial year, not the $4.2 million reported in Nelson Weekly last week. The dividend paid to shareholders was $4.2 million. NELSON MAN DEAD: Police have released the name of the man who drowned after falling from the wharf at Kaikoura late on Wednesday evening. He was Robert Murray Chapman, also known as Robert Bull, aged 54 years, of Nelson.

Best Lamb sections. Ron says the award is the result of his “passion” to make Nelson safer and he wanted to acknowledge his staff as well as his wife Tracey. “They make it happen and deserve as much credit as me.” Ron was the force behind the Tasman protocol, which assures that if someone is banned from a bar or liquor store, they’re banned from all 52 licenced premises in Nelson and Tasman. He has also been an advocate for Mellow Yellow, working with other bars and police to keep Nelson streets safer after the nightclubs close at 3am. He says it was a “huge honour” to win the awards. “I’m really passionate about this stuff, I spend a huge amount of hours talking on it and working with politicians to try and see some changes to the law. It’s about educating drinkers, it started with me wanting to make my staff safe and my customers safe. Then it was making Nelson safe and now I’d like to see a protocol system go throughout New Zealand.”

REST HOMES: Discover The 5 Things You Really Must Know In Order To Choose The One Most Suitable For You Or A Loved One You no doubt realise that the reality of rest home care in New Zealand sits somewhere in between here: • •

The horror stories you occasionally see in the media, and What’s shown in the glossy marketing brochures (while most rest homes are actually pretty good, it’s just that some can fall a little short of what the brochures suggest)

With the truth sitting somewhere in the middle, I dearly want you to have: (1) the tools to deal with the issues involved and (2) the information needed to make an informed choice. I would like you to have these because I have: • • •

Seen the frustration caused in the eternal search for the ‘perfect’ rest home Consoled the upset family who need to look for a rest home for either their mother or father Witnessed the distress of people who have been told they can no longer look after themselves and must leave their home

So over a cup of tea or coffee and during a 25-minute chat I would be delighted to let you in on: The 5 Things You Really Ought To Know In Order To Make The Decision That Best Suits Your Circumstances In less than half-an-hour, discover… * The 1 thing (a crucial first step) many people tend to overlook * 5 tell tale signs this might not be the right rest home for you * 5 big clues this might be the right rest home for you * A helpful check list: the 10 compulsory questions you must ask when visiting a rest home (don’t leave without getting the answers) * How to save time by correctly filling in an aged residential care subsidy application form on the first attempt I can speak with authority on this subject as I am a registered nurse and have worked with people aged 65 and older my entire career, including in a public hospital setting. And here’s my promise to you: when you visit you are under no requirement, pressure or duty to choose the rest home I happen to manage (Otumarama). So while it’s top of your mind, CALL ME RIGHT AWAY on 021 351 135 or 547 1822 and lock in a time to come and see me. This 25-minute information session is free, by the way. My very best wishes,

Nelson man uses the stars to find Hawaii

Andrew Board Into the second week of rough seas and a constant drip above his bed making sleep near impossible, Nelson man Mani Forbes must have been wondering what the heck he was doing floating in the Pacific on a waka. But months on, he reflects on the “greatest journey” and is now one of a handful of people who can call himself a traditional celestial navigator. Mani was the navigator on a traditional waka, carrying 18 people from Auckland to Hawaii, via Taihiti. He navigated the ship using no maps, GPS, instruments or compass. It was done entirely by following the stars, sun rises and observing what birds where around. The form of sailing is similar to that which many pacific islanders used centuries ago and has been revived as late, led by the Hawaiians. On Mani’s Waka were Tahitians, Samoans, Tongans, Hawaiians, Maori, Pakaha and Cook Islanders. While the crew had the physical job of working the boat, it was up to Mani to keep them on course and when he saw land he says he was

“just so happy” with the achievement. It wasn’t all plain sailing though, the first two weeks of the journey were hard as bad weather pounded the waka and made life pretty tough for Mani and his crew. “It was certainly a tough time mentally. I had to sleep in my wet weather gear because my bed was constantly wet, it was pretty horrible,” he says. “Because it was salt water you never felt dry and everyone was lacking sleep; it sucked.” But after reaching Tahiti and resting for several days Mani said the rest of the trip was “amazing,” with crew swimming in crystal clear water in the middle of the Pacific and watching whales swim around them. He says making the call of when to turn was the most stressful part, but when he locked eyes on Hawaii and realised he had hit it bang on, the feeling was euphoric. “I was just so amped and so excited that we did it and turned at the right time. It was such an amazing feeling, knowing that we did it.” Mani says he hopes to bring his skills to the Nelson people and would like to lead some trips with locals around the top of the south.

Guides scrape for scrap

The Whakatu Girl Guides have added some steel to their fundraising campaign this year with a scrap metal collection over the weekend. The aim is to raise money in a “final push” towards getting Nelson Guides to the National Jamboree in Rotorua this January. Josie Macdonald helped to organise what was the silver lining on a long fund-raising drive. “With final payments due on the twentieth we are coming towards the end of our fundraising. We’ve done sausage sizzles, quiz nights and movie nights and this was the final push at the end,” she says. Every piece of scrap metal both large

and small will help, and there were some very large pieces from the door to door campaign, including a bed frame a and hot-water cylinder. “A nice man went searching through his garage for us and came up with big hot-water cylinder and a TV antenna,” says Ashleigh Macdonald, a Girl Guide who assisted in the effort. Thirty-four girls and two adults are heading to the marquee event on the Guides calendar. Guide Amy Coulton says the Jamboree “is a really fun camp with guides from around New Zealand, and some international girls.” The Guides hosting a garage sale this Sunday at 125 Waimea Rd.

Businesses and schools have been minimising waste thanks to the Waste Education Services project. “When the programme started, no schools were recycling; now 58 out of 58 schools recycle in the region, including Tasman,” says Grant. The latest showpiece at the centre is the “Splash Monitoring System”, a piece of web technology that shows how much energy is being generated by the solar system in a user friendly way. “One of our long-term goals is to become a net producer of energy, a mini-power station, rather than a consumer of energy,” says Grant. At last count the NEC solar panels donated by EnaSolar, and installed by Bruce Geddes from Freedom Energy, had captured enough energy to make 19000 cups of tea and 24000 pieces of toast.

The Nelson Environment Centre is a recognised “trail-blazer”, a “model” for the rest of the country to follow, after winning a Judges Commendation from New Zealand’s Sustainability Network. In operation at various sites for over 35 years, it’s also the oldest environment centre in New Zealand. With such a stand-out example in our city, Nelson businesses, schools and homes are well placed to learn a few tips on helping the environment, while perhaps saving money at the same time, says the centre’s chief executive. “We are a community group that tries to lead by example,” says Dr Grant Jones, CEO at the NEC. “We like to walk the walk and not just talk the talk,” Grant says, referring to the centres’ use of running water capture, bio gas, composting, solar-power and many other green practises people can use in their homes. The Braemar Placebased centre is “partly an office, partly a community hub, facility and showroom,” where people are more than welcome to come along for a look or advice on green projects. “We engage with the community on education programs, information and advice, and practical solutions to problems,” says Grant. • With the upcoming A and P show we are thrilled to announce that the weekend prior (Saturday 12 November – this weekend!) we will have our own petting area under the Farmers undercroft by Sundial Square. Come and see and ply with the Calves, Lambs and baby chickens. The A and P society are bringing these animals to the mall for the first time and encourage everyone to come along to get a “wee taste of the show”. • Christmas decorations are now up at the mall – as if you needed any reminding. Students set for classic trip Michael Mazure sold some computer games, Jesse Roach has got a job on his dad’s fishing boat during the school holidays and Finn Whittington has been busking on Nelson streets, all in an effort to raise money for a school trip to Europe. The Nelson College students are part of a group of nine heading to Greece and Italy on a Classics trip, to sample their lessons face-to-face. Teacher Annette Taylor says the trip is a great opportunity for the students to see the history of those countries first-hand. It is the first time that a Classics trip from Nelson College has headed overseas and Annette says they would like to do it every two years. The students leave March 31 and will spend 17 days away, over the school holidays. The cost is $7500 per student and they have waited tables at a Rugby World Cup dinner at the school and held raffles to raise money. The students have also been organising other fundraisers including a huge car boot sale at the school on Saturday December 3, to book a spot for your car boot contact Annette via ta@nelcollege.school. nz.

Choose Richmond Glass to double glaze your existing windows Retro-fit double glazing lets you enjoy the warmth and comfort of your existing home by replacing your single glass with the latest ThermaTech double glazing. Richmond Glass has been carrying out this straightforward process in many different kinds of homes, mainly around the Top of the South Island but also as far south as Arthurs Pass, for several years, giving homeowners warm results while also lowering their energy costs. Whether you have timber or aluminium framed windows, Richmond Glass has a double glazing solution to suit your needs. If you have aluminium-framed windows, a retro-fit could not be more simple. Richmond Glass replaces the existing exterior glazing beads with the manufacturer’s double glazing beads. Where that’s not possible, Richmond Glass uses its own multi-fit double glazing retaining beads, and where necessary, its new opening sashes. The new beads are powder coated or anodised to closely match the colour of your existing window frames. If you have timber-framed win-

dows, Richmond Glass uses the patented ‘Retro Fit NZ’ drainage adaptor energy saving system which allows all existing timber windows to be retained. With a retro-fit you have the best of both worlds; your home is virtually unchanged plus you gain all the benefits of double glazing. The work is quick and unobtrusive. Richmond Glass experts will measure your windows, the new units will be made locally in Nelson and a date set for your double glazing to be installed. Richmond Glass advises you every step of

the way. One of the company’s home improvement representatives will call on you and outline your options. A quotation is supplied without cost or obligation. Richmond Glass also checks that the task can be done within the building’s structure and that all technical specs and measurements are correct. Dealing with Richmond Glass you know that your home is entrusted to a leader in the glazing industry in New Zealand. Whatever the size or shape of your windows, Richmond Glass will handle it.

How does double glazing work

The two sheets of glass are line bonded by computer control to precisetolerances with a special dual seal around an aluminium spacer. Individual windows up to 3.15 by 2.4 metres can be produced.

Planitherm total low E glass for maximum effect Planitherm Total Low E Glass is a high performance Low E coated glass, made of clear float glass on which a thin, transparent coating has been deposited by magnetron technology. This coating drastically reduces the heat transfer between inside and outside. Planitherm Total Low E Glass thermally performs approximately 10 percent better than standard

hard coat Low E glass commonly used in New Zealand. On top of this it does not suffer from the haze effect of standard hard coat Low E. The finished product has a near crystal clear appearance that will not interfere with your views.

Stay warm without condensation As a building’s interior is warmed, there is an increased prospect of condensation, mould and mildew. Condensation forms when warm air containing moisture meets a cold window surface. If the conditions are right “dew point” is

reached and condensation forms. As the inner pane of ThermaTech glazing remains substantially warmer than single glazing, condensation is dramatically reduced. Nothing can completely eliminate condensation but ThermaTech double glazing comes close. In many cases moisture problems disappear forever, while in other situations just a small amount of condensation forms at the bottom of a window or frame. This is caused by factors such as ventilation rather than glazing. If you’re building new or have an existing home that needs warming then call Richmond Glass.

Richmond Glass uses ThermaTech double glazing which consists of two or more panes of glass separated by an aluminium spacer, bonded together to form a completely sealed unit called an Insulating Glass Unit or IGU. Heat and cold pass through single glass, whereas ThermaTech units trap a layer of air or Argon gas between two panes, creating a kind of blanket that protects the warmth of your interior. This reduces heat transfer from inside to outside during winter and outside to inside in the sum-

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club The snapper have now arrived in Tasman Bay, with reports of good numbers being caught in front of Rabbit Island and along the Boulder Bank. Lots of good size kahawai have also been landed, some of which have been full of whitebait. Delaware Bay is still fishing well with some 20lb plus fish being landed in recent weeks. Also around are plenty of gurnard. There are still heaps of scallops at Okiwi Bay with only a couple of tows required to secure most people’s limit. Fishing in the mussel rafts at Squally Cove has been producing some nice brim, gurnard and kahawai also. Kenepuru has been inconsistent with only a few good snapper being caught but should start to come right in the next few weeks. Tip for this month: Fishing the Kenepuru is best done on the incoming tide, either early morning or evening. Try to fish where there is a good current flow, using lots of salmon burley; and be patient. It can take up to several hours from low tide for the fish to come into your burley trail and on the bite. Pilchards are usually the best bait. The bigger fish are usually back in the burley trail so a long cast is a good bet. The reel is put into free spool with only enough drag to stop the tide pulling out nylon. Sit back, wait for the strike and hope that you are as lucky as Kaleb McKay was.

Nelson trio beat Aussies Three of Nelson’s top multi-sport athletes made New Zealand proud over the weekend, winning the Anaconda Adventure Race over Australia by 30 minutes. Richard Ussher, Trevor Voyce and Fleur Lattimore all qualified for the third event in the Anaconda Adventure Race National Series and as well as competing individually; the trio represented New Zealand against Australia for the Trans-Tasman Adventure Racing Trophy. The event was a side show to the big race in Augusta, Western Australia. Richard won the men’s race and Fleur the women’s, with Trevor finishing fourth in the men’s race. New Zealand selection was introduced as a partnership between the organisers in Australia and adventure racing legend Nathan Fa'avae. Nathan's Kaiteriteri Beach Adventure Race, held in February and officially sanctioned as the New Zealand Multi-sport Championship, rewarded the top two male athletes and the top female athlete with selection into the New Zealand team and also gave them financial assistance from the Australians. The way the system works is each athlete in the team will add their times together at the races conclusion;

As well as living in Nelson, all three athletes have another thing in common. The all use Sujon, and all three say the use of the Nelson product has helped them train harder and achieve more. Sujon is a Blackcurrant powder that is used by scores of professional athletes including the country’s top rugby players, basketballers and triathletes. Trevor says Sujon is key in enabling him to juggle a hard training schedule on top of running fitness centre Mi-Gym. "It's really powerful in antioxidants and obviously it's a huge amount of nutrition into a small package. The main time I tend to use it is when I'm doing a big week. So anything that can keep your immunity up or prevent you from getting sick or run down is going to be a benefit and Sujon has been really helpful there," says Trevor. Nelson College’s Press Cup players took to the seven a-side game with ease, with Steven Soper, Latham Jones and Jackson Harvey making early inroads in a 64-0 thrashing over Nayland College in the final. The secondary school tournament is in its 25th year, with the winner of each region qualifying for the national final in Auckland on December 4. The committee was formed under Chairperson Don Mochan in 1984 to give the local community a two day sporting fixture, with the event being held on consecutive days at the Greenacres and Nelson golf courses, as well as to raise money for a selected charity each year. In the inaugural year, the

Himalayan Trust had approached the local Lions Club to arrange fundraising efforts to coincide with a visit from Sir Edmund Hillary himself. The famous mountaineer spoke at a number of functions and visited many of the regions’

A notable effort was the year 2000, where $28,000 was raised for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, which enabled them to purchase a Mini Bus complete with a hydraulic lift platform to carry members who are restricted to wheelchairs. Stoke man wins SI champs Greg Bryant, pictured, was the star at the 77th Annual South Island Croquet Championships held in Nelson over the weekend, taking out both the open championship and the men’s championship. Greg, of Stoke, is a New Zealand representative player and says he was happy with his efforts. “I was fairly pleased with how I played in general,” he says. It was just Greg’s second hit out of the season, but now that it is underway he hopes the result is the start of bigger things, as he aims for ranking points before the World Croquet Championship in Adelaide next year. “I just want to make sure I’m in good form to make the most of it,” he says. In other results; Dennis Bulloch was runner up in the open while William Rush was runner up in the men’s championship. The tournament was held at the Nelson-Hinemoa Croquet Club. Logan says he is aiming for the number one plate at the South Island champs, while Nash is also hoping to finish on top after he defeated the current South Island number one at the North Island meet.
