Sunken trawler lifted

A historic 100 year old trawler that spent two months underwater at Fisherman’s Wharf was refloated on Friday. The 16 metre Kaikohe sank during flooding that hit many parts of the region in February. After two failed attempts by the Nelson Fire Service to bring it up, a heavy duty, 10,000 litreper-minute vacuum pump from Christchurch got the job done. Ross MacRae, who is helping to renovate the boat, says it took about 45 minutes of actual pumping to get it floating again. Ross says that the boat also sank last year, and amazingly the time it has spent underwater has had “very little effect” on it.

David and his teammates Simon Topp, Seija McIntosh, Jay Blazek, Jesse Clifton and Greg Witika pushed and pulled his wheelchair under, over and through the muddy 6km course. Around one hundred people lined up along the fence, chanting and forming a

guard of honour from the last obstacle to the finish line. Teammate, organiser and trainer Greg Witika says the group came in at a good three hours and 40 seconds but it wasn’t about the time, it was about making a moment. “David went exceptionally well, he wanted to try everything we came up to. He was on an absolute high, he’s just grinning from ear to ear and he’s in that moment of what do I do now, where to next? “Everyone out on the course who came past was wishing David all the best and giving him high-fives, he was stealing kisses as much as he could, it was brilliant.” Greg says David’s last obstacle, an A frame, was probably the most special.

Plans for nine new pokie machines that will be part of a proposed TAB in Nelson are not going down well with local organisations, who are worried about the impact it will have on nearby neighbourhoods. Nelson City Council have received an application from the New Zealand Racing Board for the establishment of an alcohol-free TAB on Vanguard St, which is part of the site currently occupied by United Video. The video rental store is moving to a new site in Whakatu Square in early May. If approved, it will bring the number of pokie machines in Nelson to 213. There is currently a cap of 273 machines in the city. The council’s group manager of community services, Chris Ward, says resource consent was granted to Elbee Investments Ltd for the existing United Video building to be demolished and replaced with a new building, back in February.

But several community organisations are questioning the location of the venue, and the impact it will have on the Victory and Washington Valley areas. Matthew McMillan, from Nelson Problem Gambling Services, says the proposed TAB is “not a positive thing” for Nelson. “We know that pokies and TAB’s tend to be located in the poorer areas, and that one risk factor for problem gambling is how closely you are located to a gambling venue,” he says. With 18 pokies already in operation at the nearby Postboy

Hotel, it would bring the total number of machines at the Gloucester/Vanguard intersection to 27. He is also concerned that the other part of the premises could become a liquor outlet, with even more pokie machines. “If this is the case we will have a ‘gambling den’ with a TAB,” he says. The current Gambling Policy states that a new TAB venue must not being within 100 metres of any playground, kindergarten, early childhood centre, school, place of worship, or an ATM. Matthew says staff at Problem Gambling Services have measured the distance from the United Video store to an ATM at the nearby New World supermarket at 92m. Kindra Douglas from the Victory Community Centre says pokies in the area are a “real bone of contention” with her. “It’s disappointing,” she says. “But there is nothing we can do to stop it if they meet all the criteria.”

The incident meant parts of Nayland and Quarantine roads were closed for a short time and SeaDragon was evacuated. Tattooed volunteer finds a home with Presbyterian Support Kate Russell Good company and a chance to ‘get out of his comfort zone’ is what keeps local man Shane Torrence volunteering with Nelson Presbyterian support, and the heavily-tattooed helper has been dubbed a “volunteer extraordinaire” by his colleagues. After losing his legs and some of his sight to Type 1 diabetes, Shane was unable to continue his job as a painter and decorator – so he decided to become a volunteer and hasn’t looked back since. Shane said that, initially, he was turned away from one volunteer group because of his tattoos and shaved head. “They didn’t have a place for me,” says Shane. “People take me differently because of my appearance.” But then someone suggested Presbyterian Support, and Day Services Manager Trish Armstrong decided to give him a chance. He has now been there for four-and-a-half years and says he will be there “until they tell me to bugger off.” As a volunteer for Enliven Positive Aging Services, Shane helps out with the Totara programme – a day club where frail or isolated people can get

says Shane. “It’s funny, I’m just over 50 and the ladies are just over 70, but they have such a great sense of humour and we always have a laugh together. I think I’m the only one who can get away with tattoos and looks like I do - they take me as a totally different person.” Shane says if he wasn’t volunteering at Presbyterian Support, he’s not sure what he would be doing. “But this keeps me busy and helps with my attitude towards life.”

Local students thrive on finishing the 'longest day' Brittany Spencer

Secondary students spent their Saturday running, carrying logs, flipping tyres and sandsprinting across Nelson, as part of the Cactus Longest Day. The 20 school-nominated students pushed themselves to the limit and further, in a brutal day of exercise, drills and teamwork. Cactus is an eight week, military-style course for teenagers that works to improve self-discipline, motivation, teamwork, leadership and physical fitness, and culminates in the Longest Day, a six-hour challenge which determines whether they graduate. One of the challenges was a run up Emano Street with 20L jerry cans and tyres that culminated with what instructor Vicky Carnegie can only describe as an awful spare-line run. “It’s 400m of really steep track and they had to run up there in teams with tyres, lot of them found that really hard.” Vicky says the students really pulled together as a team and every single one of them passed. “I’m absolutely proud of the kids, physical fitness-wise they’ve made huge gains, but it’s not just about that - their teamwork, their ability to lead and work together and just their confidence in their ability has grown.

“If, at the start of the course, you’d shown them what we were going to do on the longest day, they just wouldn’t have believed they could do that, but they can and they did.” Vicky says the course tends to be for kids who have got leadership potential or kids that need more confidence. “It can be for stronger kids who want to get even stronger or kids who have a bit of developing to do. It’s a real mix, we have everything from head boys and girls to kids who are facing a few more challenges.”

Isel exhibition brings the outside world inside Jessie Johnston Nelson’s historic Isel House is full of interesting information and curios, including a new exhibition titled Outside Inside. As part of Heritage Week, Clare Makwana was asked to set up a display within the house which was Victorian-themed and met the brief of bringing the outside inside. The result is an exhibition focusing on the Victorian’s research and discovery of the natural world, including collections of fossils and shells, and of course, taxidermy creatures. Clare has created the exhibition to look like the living room of real life English gentleman, Rev. Sir George Cox, studying how the Victorians used their discoveries of wild animals, fossils and shells to decorate their homes, sometimes even using the artefacts as pieces of furniture. “Kids will really love it and Clare has made a quiz for kids to do so they can make their own discoveries,” says Debbie. From a lion’s skull and fossilized ice age bear claw, to a taxidermy rabbit, deer and even some fossilized dinosaur dung, the exhibition offers an interesting insight into the curiosity

Mapua Easter Fair, Tuesday, March 29: The Mapua Easter Fair was once again a successful event for the Mapua community. Although organisers are still waiting for the last of the money to come in, they say it’s looking as though the fair managed to raise around $60,000. The fair is organised by The Mapua Easter Fair Charitable Trust which raises money for both Mapua School and the Mapua playcentre. Volunteers for Poppy Day, Tuesday, March 29: Nelson RSA President Barry Pont says they have had an excellent response to their article in the Nelson Weekly calling for Poppy Day volunteers, receiving around 40 calls. Even after they received the numbers they required, more calls kept coming and Barry thanks all those who offered their services. Poppy Day is on this Friday with stalls being set up in Tahunanui, Stoke and Nelson.

Their annual ball is being held on July 2 and is one of the only balls in the area that is open to the public. Local artists jump on for fringe fest fun Kate Russell After last year’s immediate success, Nelson’s Fringe Festival is back for a second round, promising an action-packed week of original theatre and workshops. Twenty-three theatre acts will converge at the Refinery ArtSpace from May 2 – 8, with at least two workshops and three shows each night of the week – all at an accessible price for the public. Festival director Lisa Allan says tickets are already flying out the door, and she is “delighted” by the number of local thespians taking up the fringe challenge and mixing in with the national and international acts. “It is this spirit of developing works and networking between artists which is at the very heart of why Fringe was started last year,” she says. “We had 15 shows last year and have 23 shows in 21 performance spots this year,” she says. “Somehow we worked a bit of magic with the programme to fit them all in. We've also gone from 9 to 13 workshops, which is great.” One of shows featured in this year’s line-up is ‘Bananaruma,’ written by Dawn Marron from Nelson’s brand new theatre company ‘Wag the Dog’. Marron, who was involved with community theatre for many years in the UK, says that the musical comedy, which features a large local cast, can be described as a “hilarious romp through a plethora of 80's anthems.” “The story follows the trials and tribulations of an 80’s tribute band,” she says. “It’s very heart-warming, but very funny with plenty of twists and turns.” “Throughout it we perform plenty of wellknow 80’s songs and we encourage the audience to turn up in 80’s gear, and there will be spot prizes too.” The Nelson Fringe Festival has received sponsorship funding for this year's event from

Creative NZ and the Nelson Events Marketing and Development Programme, which is funded by the Nelson City Council to stimulate Nelson City's economy. It's easy to start getting excited about the fortunes of the Mike Pero Nelson Giants 2016 season, but coach Tim Fanning insists the team itself is just taking the season one game at a time. The Giants blasted past the Hawkes Bay Hawks at the Trafalgar Centre on Saturday night and local basketball fans have plenty more action to come. This Saturday night the Giants play host to the Waitakere Super City Rangers, before an Anzac weekend double at the Trafalgar Centre, starting with the Southland Sharks on Thursday April 21 and then Canterbury Rams on April 25. Tim says he's happy with the start his team has had but is bracing for the toughest game yet, against the Rangers. "I think it will be the most difficult we've had so far this year. They're going to have Mika [Vukona] back and they've won three in a row. They are a team that, at the start of the year, was a favourite to win the championship, so it's going to

be a huge test for us on Saturday, but we're looking forward to it. We're looking forward to the challenge and we'll be ready for it." Next weekend’s Geraldine Hodgson tournament marks the beginning of Nelson Netball Centre’s 2016 season. The majority of clubs had their trials and selected their teams in February so players and coaches will be keen to get their season underway. And the Geraldine Hodgson Tournament, which is named after Nelson Netball’s lifetime supporter and patroness, provides the perfect start to the season. It is encouraging to see the increase in numbers of teams entered, from 35 last year to 54 this year. Senior teams have been split

into five grades, along with a collegiate and junior grade - teams will play three pool games on Saturday before going into cross-overs on Sunday. Six of the eight Premier teams have entered, with only Richmond and Suburban absent. Waimea College A will be keen to test themselves in the elite grade having gained promotion. A new club has been formed by Marist and their Black team will foot it in the A grade which will provide a challenge for them. had a couple of practice games, only Prices Pharmacy has competed in Netball Mainland’s Super Club competition played in Ashburton and Blenheim over two weekends in March. There will be a break for the school holidays before the season-proper begins. The Premier grade will begin with a series of shortened games on May 12, with the regular season beginning on May 19. All other grades will have a grading day on May 7 before beginning their competition on May 14. Grading day is a challenge as there are a phenomenal number of games to be played which pushes umpiring resources to the limit. Once the day is completed, the grading of the teams is handed to the competition’s committee. It is a huge undertaking as the committee works through

When Nathan Sturrock emailed me about joining their Greenhorns team as a very late replacement for the Godzone Adventure Race, I had some serious reservations. For starters, the race was only two weeks away and I hadn't done any training. Other teams had been trekking, kayaking, rafting and mountainbiking thousands of kilometres over the last six months to prepare for the epic race through the Tasman district's backcountry, so how could I expect to survive the 490km journey? I hadn't even sat in a kayak for over two years. And even if I did last the distance, wouldn't I be way too slow for my three young teammates, Nathan and Lachlan Brownlee, both 19, and Rachel Baker, 21. I had visions of Nathan carrying my pack as Lachlan pushed me up a hill with Rachel walking behind muttering something about 'a pathetic old man'. I was also concerned about the team dynamics, which is

At 58, I was almost older than all three of them put together so what the heck would we talk about during the long treks through the night - certainly not Justin Bieber. I hate Justin Bieber. But Nathan was desperate. Their fourth team-mate had been injured and I'm sure they'd phoned just about everyone who owned a mountainbike to try and get a replacement before they finally got to me. I was their last hope. It was

either me or they'd have to pull out, so after getting the all clear from my family, work and cat, who I knew would miss me the most, I said yes. And surprisingly, over the four days, two hours and 27 minutes it took us to complete the race, I only regretted that decision once. It was on the first night when it was so cold I only managed half an hour sleep on the tops after climbing Ben Nevis. It was freezing, and I shivered uncontrollably for three

quers Godzone race hours as I listened to Nathan and Lachlan snoring next to me. I couldn't wait to get up at 6am and resume our 52km trek through the Red Hills to St Arnaud. But the rest of the race was amazing. We'd had a cool kayak from Kaiteriteri to Rabbit Island and a fun mountainbike along the Great Taste Trail and through the familiar tracks in Silvan Forest into the Aniseed Valley and onto the Wairoa Gorge. The ride through the Porika Track to Lake Rotoroa and raft down the Matakitaki River were also race highlights - a perfect blend of great scenery and exhilarating high speed downhills and white water rapids. Yeehah! The rafting stage was also a highlight for another reason. After having the worst sleep of my life on the first night of the

race, I had my best sleep ever on the third night when I had nine blissful hours snoring my head off in a raft on the banks of the Matakitaki. After that, we charged to the finish, only stopping at transitions for food supplied by our dedicated support crew as we biked up the Owen Valley, trekked over the Owen Range and got back on our bikes for the 140km stage from Tui to Totaranui via the Takaka Hill and Rameka Track. The only speed bumps on these stages were a bull that had escaped from its paddock that sent us scurrying to safety up a bank and a desperate, skidding stop for a Powelliphanta snail with a death wish sitting right in the middle of the track as we mountainbiked through the Rameka at 5am.

And then, finally, we kayaked across a glassy Golden Bay to the finish line at Kaiteriteri and after racing non-stop for 31 hours, gratefully received a pie and cold beer from race organisers. And yes, they were the best pie and beer I'd ever had. For the record, the Godzone Pure race was won by Team Yealands Family Wines featuring Nelson's Dan Busch in three days 12 hours 44 minutes with Team Swordfox, featuring Ash and Naomi Whitehead and Brent Edwards, second in three days 16 hours 55 minutes. Team Silky's Vicky Shelling, John Harris, Stephen Busby and Callum Irvine were the fastest mixed team in the slightly shorter Godzone Pursuit finishing in three days 22 hours eight minutes. Greenhorns were fourth.

Their game was part of the intermediate school’s summer tournament which included all the local intermediates. The tournament featured around 13 sports such as softball, dodge ball, Ki O Rahi, tennis, touch, lawn bowls, mountain biking and volleyball, and is all about encouraging students to enjoy friendly competition and get involved in new sports. We have just returned from an awesome weekend away in Okiwi Bay, where the weather was calm, the fish were biting, and club members socialised and dined on fresh crayfish. It was a great opportunity for new club members to mingle with others to learn a few fishing techniques and be shown some spots. We have a range of fishing members, which allows the experienced people to share their knowledge (and crayfish) with the newbies, and the regular fisherman who don’t often habitat this glorious fisherman's playground, to experience some of Nelson’s best fishing. You simply cannot fish at Okiwi Bay without catching at least a blue cod. However, the new size regulations of 33cm meant a few of us had to throw a lot of 31 and 32 cm cod

back, which is important for keeping the fishing stocks at premium levels. Club measuring boards were given a thrashing to ensure we kept to the new rules and only took the fish that were over 33cm in length. Snapper are still on the bite around Cape Soucis, and most members caught at least one of these popular species, Kahawai, gurnard, tarakihi and, of course, blue cod were all on most peoples catch list. Prizes were given out to all the children who took part, and thanks to sponsorship from Big Blue Dive and Fish, they had a nice goodie bag to sift through. We have another club weekend trip planned for end of May to Durville Island, weather dependent of course, so fingers crossed we will have another successful weekend's fishing.
