Six-year-old Grace Batty wore her poppy with pride at yesterday’s Anzac service in Stoke, in remembrance of all four of her great-grandparents who served in the war. She and her sister, Charlotte, were just two of many young people who attended services around Nelson yesterday. Three of their great-grandfathers served in WW1, and their greatgrandmother served in WW2, and they say they “like everything” about attending Anzac Day services. “I think it’s important to remember all the men and woman who fought in the war,” says eleven-year-old Charlotte. Southern Link groups rally support Feedback on the Southern Link Investigation closed on Sunday, and groups who are both for and against the controversial new road made a mad, last-minute dash last week to prompt Nelsonians to have their say. Anti-link lobby group Nelsust sent out a chain email last week, urging people to

send their feedback against the link in to NZTA, as well as asking people to visit the ‘Stop the Southern Link’ Facebook page. The group’s spokesperson, Peter Olorenshaw, urged the importance of “getting as many people as possible feeding back against the Southern link” and asked people to forward the email to “any and every

children to understand what Anzac day means. “It’s certainly something I was brought up with and I want my children to remember,” she says. “Otherwise, it fades away.” The strong numbers of younger Nelsonians attending ceremonies is something that has been welcomed by RSA Nelson Marlborough Westland district president Derek Nees. “It’s very encouraging to see the younger generations attending and every year we see more and more younger people turning up to services,” says Derek. “Those are the people we have to get marching alongside us, as the day is coming when we won’t be there to march.”

A “peep hole” in a Tahunanui beach toilet cubicle has been patched up after a man was seen spying on a member of the public using the men’s toilets last Wednesday. The hole in The Nelson City Council-owned toilet block was fixed last Thursday morning by a council contractor, after the incident was posted on the Nelson Snippets Facebook page – attracting over 200

Alec Louverdis, group manager infrastructure at the council says that they were made aware of the hole on Thursday morning, but can’t speculate about how long it was there for. “The contractor who cleans the toilets also looks out for damage and maintenance issues

and fixes minor problems as required,” he says. “That means damage like this is usually picked up quickly.” He says it is an “occasional” issue in toilets throughout Nelson. Nelson police spokesperson Barbara Dunn says they have received notification of the incident. “We are not aware of any other incidents,” she says. “Police encourage people to report these sorts of incidents at the time.”

She says they need support because it's "a 24-7 job that can be very lonely" and often results in people becoming "socially isolated and frustrated". "I have done some relief care-giving when we have been short of volunteers and you see the joy on the faces of the primary care giver when they are able to get out. It gives you an incredible feeling." Wendy says Age Concern trains, supervises and supports all relief carers, who are thoroughly "vetted" before they can start. Age Concern also introduces relief carers to the clients and their fulltime carer, to make sure everyone is happy with the support arrangements. Wendy stresses that volunteer relief carers are "companions" and are not required for any nursing duties. Although relief carers are voluntary, Wendy says they receive a contribution to their costs. Stolen shade sail returned after article The shade sail that was stolen from the Tasman Great Taste Trail near Harley Rd earlier this month has been returned by an “anonymous receiver” who handed it into Nelson Police on Thursday. Former restaurant owners fined $91k: The former owners of the Taste of Egypt in Nelson have been fined $91,000 in penalties and arrears owed to two workers. After an extensive investigation late last year by The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, it was re-

Reporting team grows again Locally Owned and Operated

The Weekly just keeps on growing. Almost 11 years after the Waimea Weekly was founded in Richmond and six since the Nelson Weekly first started publishing, the locally-owned media group has just employed another journalist to keep up with demand. The latest addition to the team is sports editor Jacob Page. Jacob will organise and cover sport for the two newspapers and nelsonlive.co.nz. He comes to the Weekly after six years as a

sports reporter at the Timaru Herald and a brief spell at the Blenheim Sun. Jacob says he was keen to come to Nelson because he has family here and because of the region’s growing sporting scene. “Nelson punches well above its weight in terms of the high calibre of athletes the region produces and the quality of sporting facilities the region has. “I’m looking forward to getting to know people in the community and sharing their stories with our readers.”

Weekly editor Andrew Board says the appointment was made due to the growth of the papers. “Because our advertisers are getting great results they continue to buy space in the papers, which means we also have more space for news as we increase in size. That has put a strain on our existing editorial team so we we’ve decided to increase it again. “Jacob is a great addition; he has a strong background as a sports journalist who has broken many top stories. I’m sure local

athletes and sporting organisations will be delighted to work with him.” The Weekly – which is the only locallyowned newspaper group in the region – now has six journalists across its three brands. Wairua Warriors hand money to Harold Harold the Giraffe from the Life Education Trust made a visit to Wairua Fitness on Friday. Amidst the kettlebell squats, tyre flipping and general horseying around, Harold and Nelson Tasman Life Education Trust chair Michelle Fitzgerald were given $5550 by the team at Wairua Fitness. The money donated to the trust was raised at the challenging Wairua Warrior obstacle race earlier this month. Michelle says the donation is amazing. “It’s great to be involved with

something local and without the input and generosity of Wairua and the other organisations that support us, we wouldn’t be able to get around the schools with the classroom and deliver the program that we have. “It costs about $18 per kid and we see about 5500 children a year," she adds. "It's a lot of coin, but this support is incredible and it will go towards helping us pay our educator and updating the classroom.” Event organiser Greg Witika says he and the team are happy

they could support the trust. “Last year we only managed to raise $2000, so we’re stoked we could double that and hopefully next year we’ll go even bigger,” says Greg. “We chose Life Education Trust because it teaches kids good life skills and most of our members are parents. It’s a great cause and all the money raised stays local.” Greg says the $5000 came from registrations and the remaining money was donated by King Salmon who donated all their proceeds from selling bagels on the day.

Those at the fete had the opportunity to learn about all the guns on display and get a glimpse of what war would have been like. “It’s important to me that we celebrate Anzac Day because it reminds us of what we’ve got to not let happen again,” says Darrin. “My grandfather was stationed over at Delta during the war, but my father’s younger brother went over to Crete and got captured there by the Germans and put in a prison camp. Poppy Day, Tuesday, March 29: After taking to the streets for Poppy Day on Friday, April 15, Nelson RSA was pleased to raise an initial total of $14,770. The overall total is still to be calculated as their fundraising also included 40 collection boxes which were distributed around Nelson businesses and their stall at the Nelson Saturday market over the weekend. All money raised through Poppy Day stays in the area and is used for welfare costs for returned servicemen, or their widows or dependents. Nelson Civic Choir, Tuesday, April 12: Nelson Civic Choir has received a handful of donations towards their fundraising campaign for New York, but is still in need of support to reach their goal. The group was invited to audition for the premier of a new musical piece by composer Sir Karl Jenkins, and was then selected to take part in the concert which will be held at New York’s Carnegie Hall in January next year. They are the only choir from New Zealand going and will be amongst several other choirs from around the world. Kettlebell Competition, Tuesday, April 19: Saturdays Kettlebell competition saw 11 athletes compete, three from Auckland, one from Christchurch and seven locals. Local woman Sheena Jones set a new New Zealand record with 116 reps in the 16kg Long Cycle and took out the overall Long Cycle title. She also set a New Zealand record in the 12kg Snatch with 175 reps. The Women's Long Cycle event was the highlight with four women lifting 16kg for 95 reps plus. Other outstanding local lifters include Nikki Bowman who took first overall in the Snatch, Peter Jones who snatched 16kg for 208 reps for first place in the mens Snatch, and Shane Bowman who set a personal record in the 12kg Long Cycle. Lifters are now looking forward to training for the inaugural NZGSA national championship at the NZ Fitness Expo in July.

Kate Russell Nelson SPCA will be given a boost next month, with a local theatre company gifting them one dollar from every ticket sold for their upcoming play. Antics Theatre Company, led by director Hugh Neill, will be performing The Hound of the Baskervilles at the Theatre Royal from May 4-7. Neill says it’s a unique take of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most celebrated Sherlock Holmes story, with a “manic twist.” “It’s a wonderful spoof on the original story, but we follow the storyline pretty faithfully and it will appeal to anyone with a sense of humour who is young at heart,” he says. “Three actors will play 15 characters between them. It goes at quite a pace and there are some ridiculously fast costume changes, which is half the fun.” Hugh says it great to be supporting the SPCA and they have done similar shows for other organisations in the past. SAVE THE CHILDREN FAIR: Tania Maheno of Stoke purchases an item from a volunteer at the annual Save the Children Fair on Saturday. The fair, which was held at the Stoke Memorial Hall, is raising money for two specific projects that the Save the Children organisation is currently involved in. The first being in Bangladesh, involves working alongside local partners in the Daulatdia brothel to provide quality education to children there, while the second project, in the Philippines, works within schools to teach children how to prepare for and respond to natural disasters. The total amount raised through the fair isn’t known at present, but organisers were pleased with the crowds of people who came to explore and purchase a range of items, from plants and homemade produce, to clothes, books and toys. Classic carnival celebrates past and present Jessie Johnston The Tahunanui Classic Carnival was a day of sun, surf and friendly competition, coinciding with the Nelson Surf Life Saving and Nelson Boardriders club's reunion. Unlike a competitive carnival, Saturday’s activities at Tahunanui Beach were purely for entertainment, and designed so anyone could get involved, including people from other surf life-saving clubs around the region. While those taking part were mostly the younger members of the Nelson club, ex surf life-savers and board riders watched on, remembering the old days and seeing how much things have changed since the original club was established. "Surf life-saving in Nelson has gone through a number of reincarnations, surf life-saving started in 1932 in Nelson and at various times it faded away and restarted and it sort of existed on and off up until the 50s. Then, in about 1956, a number of other surf life-savers from other clubs around the country came here and really strongly thought they wanted to have an official club with a club house," says current Nelson Surf Life Saving president, Marcus Gardner. The club continued this pattern until 1982 when a lack of membership forced it into recess, and not long after that the old club-

"Surf life-saving was going through a lot of changes in those days, from using reel and rope with a swimmer on the end to rescue people, to the rescue tube in the 80s and the BP inflatable boats. That was partly how our club came about, the old Tahuna club had been dead for a short number of years, and then we had people come from out of Nelson who thought we did really need a surf life-

saving club. In those days you had to start from scratch and we started as a community rescue service, and basically grew that organisation to the point where we could get back to being an official life-saving club," says Marcus. The reunion weekend, which started on Friday with a casual meet and greet, is the last opportunity to get all the past and present club members together. "From the 1950s, 1960s, right through to

the early 1980s era, we've got a good spread across all the decades. We've got one or two of the early members who are in their 80s now, who were involved with the club in the 1950s when they built the original clubhouse that used to be here in the days when [membership] was really strong, and then we've got people through the 1970s up to 1980," says Marcus. After the carnival on Saturday, which allowed past members to see how surf lifesaving has progressed, a formal dinner was held at The Boathouse. "Its just amazing to have the stories come out and the people remember so much, it's been really interesting, and its good because it links surf life-saving right back, from where we are now, to its earlier history," says Marcus. "A lot of them watch surf life-saving on television and things, and they just say "its not like it used to be but it looks a hell of a lot of fun, and that's the main thing, it's all about having fun and keeping the kids coming through." The carnival included IRB racing, beach flags, board racing and swimming races. "The club wouldn't exist without the support of the local public and businesses, we exist purely to help the community and the sport side is the fun side that we do," says Marcus.
