Support for new highway Andrew Board Supporters of the Southern Link had a win with the latest public feedback results from New Zealand Transport Agency showing support for the new road. But those against the new road are still working hard to rally support. The results of the NZTA’s second stage of their five stage investigation into the road were released on Friday afternoon. It showed that more than 60 per cent of the 2010 submitters supported construction of the road, known informally as the Southern Link. Twenty-four per cent of people said they wanted to make the most of the existing network and only 10.5 per cent wanted to widen current routes.

A separate telephone survey of 500 people – 400 in Nelson and 100 in Tasman – again pointed towards building the Southern Link, with 46 per cent favouring that approach. Another 34 per cent supported widening the existing arterial routes and just 17 per cent said to make the most of the existing network. When asked if Nelsonians thought the congestion problem in Nelson was significant, 54.4 per cent said it was very significant, 14.3 per cent said it was moderately significant, 15.3 per cent said it was somewhat significant and only 16.1 per cent said it was not significant. The results suggest NZTA will move onto the next

arrangement. It’s just one of the ways that locals can get involved in this year’s festival, and both confident and first time singers from 6 - 99 years of age, from all corners of the region, are invited to take part.

Writer and director, Jo Randerson from Wellington-based Barbarian Productions, says they are asking Nelson locals for their opinions about three different generations in our society - under 30, 30-60 and over 60, by filling out a survey. Questions such as ‘what are young people like these days’ and ‘how

stage of the investigation, the indicative business case, after the first stage showed there was a strategic business case for the project. The investigation has to pass through four stages before reaching “implementation”, which is the fifth step. But even if it does get that far, it is highly likely there will be an appeal to the Environment Court and other protests. If it wasn’t already, the issue will now become a hot topic for the local body elections, which are held in early October. The survey text will then be collated, edited and re-organised by Jo, set to music by musical director, Julian Raphael and rehearsed and performed by local singers. Jo says they have already made the project in Wellington and thought Nelson would be the perfect fit for the next project. She says the idea for the show came about in 2014 when she noticed more intergenerational comments in society, such as comments of Facebook about what young people are like or what old people are like. “I felt it was a conversation we should have more publicly, and I know there’s a sense of concern amongst all generations about how the future is looking,” she says. If you’re interested in being a singer in the show, email singittomyface@gmail.com. A singing workshop will be held on September 3, which is open for anyone to attend.

Nelson City councillor Matt Lawrey, who is a strong critic of the proposal, says support is much less than previously stated by Nick Smith. “In the end, Nick Smith and everyone else who thinks that being pro-road is the way to get elected will have to answer this simple question: if the air quality in Nelson South is still so bad that people aren’t allowed to install log burners, how will the link get past the Environment Court?”

The group has been talking to residents face-to-face as well as giving them stickers, flyers and a list of mayoral candidates and councillors they will be supporting in the upcoming October local body elections. The group say that building a new road is not a progressive way to solve congestion, and encourage more cycling, walking, more affordable public transport and inner city living and over/underpasses at various schools. Nelson MP Nick Smith says he wasn’t surprised by the results of the consultation and urged Nelsonians to vote for candidates that will support building the road. “Nelson’s economy and population is growing strongly,

The new-look terminal for Nelson Airport has been given the thumbs up from airline travellers and locals. Last Wednesday Nelson Airport revealed plans for the long-awaited $32million terminal upgrade. Work will begin later this year and is expected to take two years to complete. Nelson Airport chief executive Rob Evans says the project will greatly enhance the experience for travellers with more space for seating, airline lounges, toilets, new retail spaces and increased car parking. And it seems travellers agree. Nelson Weekly took the concept design to the airport to ask those flying in and out of the airport what they think of the plans. All were supportive, with Rob Brouwer, who regularly comes to Nelson from Raglan for work, especially pleased to see the addition of a luggage conveyor belt. “I think it looks good, Nelson has got to be one of the sunniest places in New Zealand and I love coming here for work,” he says. Neville Clark, security worker at Nelson Airport, says the new airport is going to be “abso-

Local mums celebrate breastfeeding Kate Russell Mums, babies and toddlers turned up to the Victory Community Centre on Friday morning to be part of this year’s Big Latch On. The worldwide event is run every year as part of world breastfeeding week and aims to normalise breastfeeding as part of everyday life. The event attracted 16 mums and their littlies, who ranged in age from 10 weeks to 3 years old. Local businesses and Plunket donated spot prizes, morning tea and provided kids activities. Mum Rachel Oliver, who came with her 16 month old, Katelyn says breastfeeding has not always been so easy for her, and had trouble feeding her first two children. “This is the thirdtime lucky for me, and I’m really pleased she has fed for this long,” she says.

with the turnout on Friday. “It was great to see so many mums and bubs from different walks of life and different cultures,” she says. “We had one of the midwives from the hospital there too as well as Plunket nurses. It was just a great opportunity for mums to get together.”

The man was who died in a “very violent attack” on a boat moored in Nelson Haven has been identified as a local man. Police were alerted to a body found on a boat opposite the Neale Park playing fields on Thursday morning. A team of Nelson detectives, assisted by forensic and fingerprint experts from Christchurch, have been investigating the scene since. On Saturday afternoon a post mortem was completed in Christchurch, after which police identified the dead man as John Murray “Muzza” Morton. Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Johnston said the post mortem also confirmed the death was a homicide. “The number and nature of Mr Morton’s injuries suggest a very violent attack and the investiga-

tion team is determined to piece together exactly what happened. Extra resources are being brought in from other police districts and the Nelson team will be joined by further investigators on Monday,” says Craig. Mr Morton was not the owner of the boat that his body was found on. Police say they are keen to hear from anyone who uses the reserve area or may have recently taken photographs of the area of QEII drive opposite the skate park, particularly the boats that are moored there, in order to help police reconstruct the scene and understand recent activity there. Anyone with information that may be relevant to the investigation into Mr Morton’s death is asked to contact Nelson Police on 03 546 3840. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Deputy mayor Paul Matheson is back home and feeling “great” after a triple bypass and open heart surgery late last month. The former mayor says he was at home chopping some fire wood when he lost control of his arm. He went inside and felt his “whole body shutting down”, so called 111. An ambulance arrived, confirmed he was having a heart attack and he was taken to Nelson Hospital before being transferred to Wellington for surgery. Paul is now back home after the successful triple bypass and is keen to spread the word on calling for

help. “When I was in Wellington talking to the cardiac guys, they said people in my age group don’t call 111 and they wanted to know why I did. They say they pick up too many bodies because people – mainly men – don’t want to bother people. Well, it’s better to bother them than having your family having to bury a body. I encourage people to ask their partners, ‘would you call 111’?” Paul says he will be seeking reelection for council, despite the attack. “I feel good, I know I can do the work, I still enjoy the work and people still want me there, so why not?”

Bodies built to bronzed perfection Locally Owned and Operated

Ben Gibson competes in the NABBA/WFF Top of the South Classic at the Theatre Royal on Saturday. Photo: Evan Barnes/Shuttersport.

Nelson’s Rachel Foster and Ben Gibson had differing motivations for competing at bodybuilding’s Top of the South Classic at Nelson’s Theatre Royal on Saturday. For 35-year-old Rachel it was a return to the sport after two children and a 13 year absence. For 26-year-old Ben, competing in the WFF Athletic Class 1, the desire to “build up my body, not tear it down” after some serious injuries playing lock in rugby, was the motivator for his first ever competition. Both competitors were trained by Nelson’s Mark Anderson. Rachel, who competed in the Over-35 Figure Class says the 4.30am starts for her one hour of cardio were her

favourite time of the day. “It was actually easy, there are no kids, no husband, no work, it’s just a case of putting the hard work in.” Having worked in a gym when she was 16, Rachel says she always had an interest in bodybuilding and enjoyed the competitive side of it. “Today was about getting back out there and giving it a go,” she says. “I joined the gym again last year and really enjoyed the training and thought this would be something to aim for.” There’s the standard diet of chicken breasts, fish and multiple cups of vegetables before competition, but now it's over Rachel says she's looking forward to a sitdown and a wine or two. Ben, who was rumoured to have shed 30kg in the lead up to the event, says

he found it intimidating. “I wanted to put myself out of my comfort zone. “I played a lot of rugby and I got a lot of injuries, and I wanted to change sports and do something that would be good for my body.” Ben was anything but the stereotypical bodybuilder, he was shy, quiet and unsure if he’d embrace being in the spotlight. However, he says everything from his time on stage to being coated in fake tan to make his muscles more defined was all an experience. After competing, he says he was most looking forward to a slice of pizza. Mother: tough decision not to immunise Brittany Spencer

While GPs are disappointed by last month’s controversial revelation that over 200 Nelson babies are not fully immunised, it is not surprising to some Nelson mothers. One Nelson mother, who spoke to Nelson Weekly on the condition that she remained anonymous for fear of being abused, decided against vaccinating her child. Her boy is now 13 months old and has not received any vaccinations. “Early in my pregnancy, I didn’t even consider that not vaccinating was an option.” However, she says that changed after talking to other non-vaccinating mothers within the region. “I knew they wouldn’t have made that decision lightly. They’re mainstream people who are highly educated, so I thought it was worth looking into.” For three months before the birth of her son she solidly researched books, reports, medical journals and articles supporting both sides. “It is really hard to find good research, there’s so many sensationalised articles both pro-vaccine and anti-vaccine. I looked at both sides and getting through all the jargon and data was quite a battle.” She researched the efficacy of vaccines, the trial methods, vaccine risk factors, heard immunity and the risks and treatment options available if her son contracted an illness. “At the end of it, my opposing arguments for vaccinating were longer than my sup-

A Nelson mother with her 18 month-old son who she has decided not to immunise. Photo: Brittany Spencer. porting list, so I decided not to do it,” she says. “I went round and round in circles about whether to vaccinate or not and it's an ongoing decision, one I will keep revisiting, but unless the pros strongly outweigh the cons I will maintain the decision that I’ve made, but I’m open to changing it.” After the research, she says she doesn’t think the immunisation schedule works as well as we’re told it does. “Vaccination doesn’t work for everyone and there are risk factors that can contribute to vaccine injuries, when the chances of contracting those diseases are quite low.” While her family are supportive, she says this is not always the the case. “When my boy was really young I was

quite open about it. I was almost naive, I didn’t realise there was such a pro-vaccination movement that attacks people who challenge it, but now I see people looking at me sideways and questioning my judgement. “It’s hard for mothers to ask questions because if they talk to the wrong person they get judged harshly for it.” She also says social media is the latest area for attacking non-vaccinators. “People are constantly using social media as a bullying platform, they’ll post articles that ridicule non-vaccinators. There are some out there that liken non-vaccinators to murderers, its absolutely ridiculous…I just wonder if those people had done the research I’ve done, whether they’d com-

ment so violently on the topic.” Because of the strong reaction non-vaccinators get, she says the subject often just doesn’t get talked about. “People don’t really talk about it and I find that scarier, because instead of being able to be informed and educated you stay in silence, afraid of being judged. There are still a couple of friends I haven’t told.” She says theres a lot of stigma attached to the decision and non-vaccinators don’t tend to have a good name because some people make that decision uninformed. “It’s a deeply personal decision and it’s one thing to make an informed decision not to vaccinate and its another thing to not do it because you hear a scary story, forget, or because you don’t want to put your child through getting a prick by a needle.” “We’re all trying to do the best by our kids and I just want to encourage people to not be so quick to judge.” As a patient or parent of a patient, you have a right to be fully informed and make your own choice, and the Nelson mother says she gets really scared when people say vaccination should be mandatory. “The thought that you could force someone to inject foreign matter into another person's body is terrifying and where does that stop? Taking away the freedom to make the choice about what goes into their own or their children’s body is a whole other level of wrong.” To follow previous articles written about vaccination in Nelson, visit www.nelsonlive. co.nz.

Good news for Waimea Village home owners There was good news at Waimea Village’s annual general meeting last week when shareholders of the 172-home village received a second consecutive dividend. And the news got even better when Waimea Village board chair Trevor Tuffnell told shareholders they had paid off the $282,000 mortgage that had been taken out to purchase the property in 2013. The announcement signified a remarkable turnaround for the residents who had been involved in a bitter dispute with former owners

Michael and Carolyn Wright over skyrocketing fees. “It’s going well and it’s created an atmosphere that is giving everyone a lot of comfort,” Trevor says. “We are fortunate to have an effective board of directors, and we seem to know what we are doing, and the residents are happy. I’ve been involved with all sorts of committees over the years but this one, to me, has been one of the most satisfying I have been involved with.” The village’s part-time manager

Kit Maling, who negotiated a deal for the residents to buy the village in 2013, says the 146 shareholders received a dividend of $240, up from the $180 they received last year. All residents, including the 26 leaseholders, had also benefited from an increased maintenance programme, that included $60,000 spent on resealing roads. Kit says the monthly lease has also been reduced from $135 to $100 for shareholders and from $182 to $160 for leaseholders.

The Wrights were planning to increase the monthly lease from $182 to $282 before they sold the village in 2013 – it had been just $80 in 2010. Kit says he is delighted that they have been able to pay back the mortgage and step up the maintenance programme while reducing the monthly fees. A security system has been also been installed and fences have been repaired. Resident Shirley Kelliher says “it’s just so much more relaxed, you’re so much more comfortable. If

you ask for something to be done it gets done, without argument, and we’re loving these dividends.” Shirley says Wednesday’s annual general meeting was a nice change after the acrimonious meetings involving the Wrights. “It’s so different coming to a meeting like this, to the ones we were coming to three or four years ago. It was horrendous, you couldn’t have a meeting without yelling and screaming and crying, but now everybody’s smiling, it’s great.”

Mid winter night market, Tuesday, July 26: The masquerade night market last Thursday was a wonderful, magical success with a warm European winter market feel and the rain staying away until the perfect time. Organiser Amme Hiser says there were loads of hot food, smiles and smells that filled the air, while the music and dancing brought people together. The Brook Sanctuary raised around $500 in donations and they gave away lots of prizes for the best dressed family, girl, boy and couple. The next night market is scheduled for December 15, for some great Christmas shopping. Family violence a ‘significant problem’, Tuesday, July 19: After taking to the streets to raise money during Women’s Refuge Appeal week, Nelson Women’s Refuge was happy to announce a total of $5863.60 was raised through donations, over $700 more than last year. Considering how small the organisation is, manager Katie O’Donnell was pleased with the result and said everyone had been incredibly generous both in Nelson and Richmond, including the Richmond Mall who accommodated their collection stand. Coming up, Nelson Women’s Refuge has a fund-raising quiz night at Speights Ale House and a movie night showing the new Bridget Jones movie. For more information check out their Facebook page. Nayland College production Annie Get Your Gun, Tuesday, August 2: The show has been entertaining audiences with the perfect combination of guns, cowboy boots and sassy mouths. Production Manager Rose Sheppard says the cast has been tearing up the stage and audiences have been loving the friction between the two leads, Frank and Annie. The last shows will be on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night with doors open at 6pm and the show kicking off at 7pm. Tickets are available from the the Nayland College business centre, adults are $15 and under 18-year-olds are $10, or at door an hour before the shows.

Bridal show the perfect place for brides-to-be

BRIDAL SHOW: Nelson Bridal Show organisers, Casey Stevenson, left, and Jenny Ohlson, with sponsor Glen James, invite local brides and grooms to attend the upcoming expo at the Rutherford Hotel. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Jessie Johnston If you’re a blushing bride to be, then the Nelson Bridal Show is a must when it comes to planning your special day. Organisers Jenny Ohlson, Casey Stevenson and Lisa Booth are relaunching the event which will feature a diverse range of exhibitors within the Rutherford Hotel. Starting at 10am, the first 50 brides through the door will receive a special pamper gift, with more opportunities to win prizes spread throughout the day, including the chance to take home a pair of diamond earrings thanks to Glen James Jewellers. Entry into the competition can be done between 10am and 1:30pm, just in front of the Glen James Jewellers stand. All you need to do is pick the real diamond from the cubic zirconia. As well as helping brides and grooms connect with local wedding industry experts, the Nelson Bridal Show is also supporting the community as a not-for-profit event. Lisa, Jenny and Casey are all giving their time freely to organise the event, with all profits from the expo being donated to the Nelson Tasman Rescue Helicopter Trust. Tickets to the show can be purchased online for $10 from www.bridetobe.co.nz, or people can purchase tickets for the same price on the day. Keep August 21 free on your calendar and head along to the Rutherford Hotel for the Nelson Bridal Show. The show will run until 3pm, with a fashion show taking place at 2pm.

Majority support Southern Link: It is excellent that Nelsons' roading is finally getting the discussion that was needed, it should not be about winners and losers but how to get the best outcome for Nelson City and the wider region. It's unnecessary. There are so many alternatives for people doing the commute (e.g. Push bike, motorbike, scooter, improving public transport). Not worth separating a community. Definitely not worth putting a road right next to two schools either. Cassandra Polosak.

Wish they'd just do it already! Nikole Berkett. Nelson needed this years ago, About bloody time. Terry Fuller. I bet most of those who support it live out of the city and drive in, in their "one person to a car" vehicles, and won't be the ones affected by the main road going through a community and schools. More roads equal more cars!!! Nelson does not have a congestion problem. It's a 10min issue on Waimea Rd which could easily be fixed by double laning or creating clearways during peak hours. Improve public transport!!! Look at how much traffic disappears when it's school holidays! Spending millions on a non-issue and destroying the environment for the sake of 10mins is irresponsible when there are more cost-effective and obvious solutions available. It will also just move the "congestion" to the Annesbrook roundabout, so the problem won't actually be

fixed. Arnie Raddock. Get it done. All the surrounding areas also have homes and schools, but don't bitch about it. The southern link is the only option that gives an extra road out of town, thereby decreasing traffic on other roads. Jeff Holden. Car still down bank three months on: Nelson L ve If he pays to have it removed - he'll Nelson L ve never get his money back - the police need to get it removed and then charge to owner or the driver, or if they don't come forward there must be some fund it can come out of - if it had crashed into another car they would have to have had it removed. I can understand the frustration from the people who have to look at this eyesore, but responsibility falls on the ignorant lazy mindless t&^* who crashed it there! Sharon May Patterson. I would never not vaccinate my kids. There are so many out there without immune systems, why would you put them at risk too? Its not always about you, sometimes other children are just as important. Aleicia Humphries. A few weeks ago my niece (7 months pregnant) took her wee boy in to get his vaccine. They noted he was a bit snuffly so they re-booked for the following week. The wee boy had full -blown measles before he could get his pre-booked vaccine. Luckily, both mother and son came through this ok, but it was a scary time for them (and worrying for us). Historic home houses 20,000 guests Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

One of Nelson’s most-loved historic homes, Warwick House, has reached a milestone 20,000 visitors - and to celebrate, its owners are opening the doors for the public next month. Originally known as ‘Sunnyside’, the Brougham St property has been owned by Nick and Jenny Ferrier for the past 13 years. The couple have lovingly restored the house piece by piece and now run it as a boutique bed and breakfast accommodation. Known to many Nelsonians as ‘the castle’, it was built in 1854 for wealthy English merchant Alfred Fell. It has changed hands several times – once being used as a gentleman’s boarding house. Later, in 1941, it was divided up into five internal apartments, and remained that way for 70 years until it was purchased by Nick and Jenny in 2003, along with their three children. The couple had spent 15 years living overseas and had decided it

was time to return back to New Zealand to settle in Nelson. Funnily enough, they were renting a property right next door to Warwick House, and when the ‘for sale’ sign went up they knew it was meant to be. It was not until they had moved in that they realised what a ‘grand old lady’ she really was. “It was pretty run down,” says Jenny. “We didn’t even know we had a ballroom, as the ceiling was lowered when it was divided into flats in the 1940s, to save on heating.” Grand archways and internal stairways were found behind the false ceilings and walls, and a number of treasures were stumbled upon during the renovations, including a duelling sword tip, the original bell wire system, a hidden wine cellar, several antique doors and the original coal gas piping system. The renovations were staggered over four years, and although the house was structurally sound, it needed to be re-wired, re-plastered and had no insulation. Now, as their youngest child

fantastic sharing the house with both locals and internationals. “You can never rebuild these houses and many of our visitors, especially those from Christchurch, really appreciate it with them losing so many of their heritage buildings.”

Coasters reunite in Nelson Andrew Board In 1956 at Hokitika District High School, a class of 17 West Coast boys learnt how to use their hands to prepare them for their lives ahead – 60 years on they met in Nelson to discuss how it turned out for them. Of the 17 boys, nine are still alive and seven of them live in Nelson. Another former Hokitika student travelled up for the reunion from Christchurch on Saturday. The reunion was organised to coincide with the annual Ex-West Coasters get together, which was held at the Suburban Club on Sunday. Gary Howard says he organised the school reunion because it was remarkable that half of the class from 60 years ago live in Nelson. He says there were four classes at Hokitika High School then, one for academic boys, one for academic girls, one for cooking and sewing for girls and one for woodwork and metalwork for boys. His class made up the latter. “We all went on to learn a trade, I was an electrician and had the biggest electrical firm on the West Coast until the power board bought us out. Then I moved to Nelson in 1972.” Other members of the class went on to become mechanics, police officers and businessmen. He says so many West Coasters move to Nelson for several main reasons: “The climate, schools, hospitals, it’s bigger but not too big and you’re still close to the coast.” The next day, the eight men and their partners then headed to the Ex-West Coast get-together at the Nelson Suburban Club, where the talk was dominated by whitebait, rain and old friends. Organiser Murray Wieblitz says it was another great turn out with around 150 people registering. “It was a really good day and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.” Like Gary, Murray believes there are so many Coasters who now live in Nelson because of the weather. “I shifted here in 1970. I was a dairy farmer and had just had one hell of a wet spring. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back.” He says, although a lot of Coasters now call Nelson home, they still have a connection with the coast. “I always say when we drive down there that we’re heading home, when we drive back we’re coming home.”

A Salute to Pioneers

Having lost their first two children on the infamous Lloyds expedition in 1841, James and Elizabeth Cross embraced their new life with the fortitude and faith that encapsulates the pioneer character.

They settled into the Nelson Community and gave their next son and daughter the same names as their first; James and Mary Ann. Mary Ann lived a long and fulfilling life, dying in 1945 at the age of 96.

Soldiers plan reunion The funds left untouched in a bank account for "over 15 years" will be put to their intended use later this year when a group of retired soldiers from the Nelson Marlborough West Coast Regiment have a reunion. The bank account contained leftover funds from the regiment's last reunion "over 15 years ago" and as time passed all the original signatories of the account passed away. However, the account has been reactivated by a group of "old fellas" who are planning to use the funds for a reunion of all the regiment’s soldiers who were drafted under Compulsory Military Training. “The bank had been sending the monthly statement to the regular force guys here in Nelson and they didn’t know anything about it,” one of the reun-

ion organisers, Pete Nicholas, says. “It had been left in the account with the instructions that it was to be used for another reunion, so that started the ball rolling. “It was a small amount, so we went to the bank and arranged new signatories and got together last week to plan the reunion. We are all well into our seventies so it will be a bunch of old fellas getting together and telling lies.” Pete says they expect around 50 people to attend the reunion. He says compulsory military training scheme ran 1950 to 1972 so “there aren’t too many of us left”. “I was an apprentice barber with Ted Wilson when I got

my letter. I had a medical with Dr Oliver and then took the Newmans bus to Blenheim and train to Burnham for 16 weeks of training. “My father was in World War I and my older brother was in World War II, so when I got the letter saying I had been drafted I was thrilled. It was a big thing and we had a marvellous time - it certainly didn't do me any harm.” The reunion will be held at the Garrison Club at the Army Headquarters on Rutherford St, starting at 11.30am on November 22. Any members of the Nelson Marlborough West Coast regiment who served under CMT are welcome. For more information, contact Paddy Maskill at 1pm1@clear. net.nz or phone 5448842, or Pete Nicholas at peteandshirl@ kinect.co.nz or 5478144.

Nelson’s Maadi Cup originals back where it all started Jacob Page

Four members of Nelson’s inaugural Maadi Cup hockey team of 1951 returned to the tournament at the Saxton Hockey Turf over the weekend. Ralph Davies, Eric Parker, Kelvin Ching and Frank Black were all part of the Nelson team which won the first ever tournament in “atrocious” conditions on home soil. “It was so cold I couldn’t pick up the ball for the roll out,” Ralph says. “We had long socks at the start of the tournament but they had shrunk to just above our ankles by the end of it.” The trophy has been competed for annually ever since between Marlborough, Buller and West Coast and was gifted as a memorial to men and women killed in world wars. Eric remembers the inaugural team having some quality players in their ranks, but when it comes to genetics he may have won the battle. Eric’s father Godfrey played hockey for Nelson in 1920 and Eric’s four sons have all played Maadi Cup hockey for Nelson over the years.

Four of the original Nelson men’s hockey team from the first Maadi Cup tournament in 1951 were on hand for a reunion of past players during the 2016 tournament at Saxton Field over the weekend. They are, from left, Ralph Davies, Kelvin Ching, Eric Parker and Frank Black. Photo: Jacob Page.

Ralph was just 20 during the first Maadi Cup but went on to captain Nelson in 1958 and 1959, playing matches against Australia, India, Pakistan and New Zealand during the time where hockey was being played on grass at Trafalgar Park. All four men agreed the game was much faster now that it’s played on a synthetic surface. “It’s a free-for-all now,” Ralph says. “The ball is in the air a lot, you can raise your stick more than we ever did.

An 11-3 win over Marlborough and a 6-2 triumph over Buller was enough to see them take the trophy from the Coasters on goal differential. Captain Paul Muncaster says his players benefited from extended minutes in the last two games after a slow start in game one. “I think guys were getting five to seven minutes on the turf at a time and that wasn’t enough, so we changed that to 10 to 15 minutes in the other two games.

More than 40 former Nelson Maadi Cup players were welcomed to a reunion during the weekend. Meanwhile, on the turf, the Nelson men won back the Maadi Cup with two wins and a draw. The crucial match of the tournament came in the opening game against West Coast when the home team was able to battle back from 2-0 down with 10 minutes remaing and earn a 2-2 draw.

Paul praised the efforts of Toby Bowden and Jarod Jones through the tournament. Nelson’s senior women’s team found the going tougher at the Pope Shield tournament. Nelson drew with West Coast 4-4 and lost to front runners Marlborough 6-3 before hammering Buller 10-2. The women’s B team beat Marlborough 3-1 and West Coast 7-1 in an unbeaten Gladstone Cup campaign.

games. Both Roncalli College and Lincoln offered little in attack and they are sure to be tested by a Christchurch Boys’ High School team who had to settle for second after the round-robin play, with Christs College earning top spot having had just one loss, to rivals CBHS, all season. Nelson will undoubtedly look to use their speed and power in the backs, which has caused trouble for weaker teams all year. Waimea will travel over the hill to play Marlborough Boys' College in Blenheim in the plate semi-final, after they dispatched Rangiora High School 52-12 in Motueka. Waimea led only 14-12 at halftime but piled on 38 unanswered points from then on. Three tries to flanker Reuben Chubb and doubles to winger Callum Whitten and fullback Culainn Stringer were the cata-

Nelson College and Waimea Combined will both hit the road this weekend in their quest for silverware in the UC Championship rugby competition. Nelson College finished third on the table after the regular season and will face second seeds Christchurch Boys High School in Christchurch for a place in the final. Nelson College warmed up for the challenge by retaining the Moascar Cup in a comfortable 55-5 victory over Lincoln High School at Nelson College on Saturday. Fullback Caleb Coventry scored twice in the convincing win. Nelson College drew with Christchurch Boys' High School 6-6 at Trafalgar Park earlier in the season. lyst for the big win. Waimea Combined beat Marlborough Boys' College 42-19 earlier in the season, so there’s a good chance Waimea’s resurgence under the combined name will continue for another week.

tage for the final quarter. Waimea College senior 2 had a 6-3 advantage after the first quarter, despite having less attacking chances than NCG. While the NCG defenders earned plenty of turnovers, the ball was not treasured in the attacking circle and multiple opportunities were lost. NCG earned the first two goals of the second quarter to close the gap. They rode the early momentum to eventually draw level late in the quarter. Both team still conceded turnovers through poor

Nelson College for Girls Senior Purple and Waimea senior 2 produced an entertaining yet scrappy 2020 draw in senior netball at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. Waimea controlled the first and fourth quarters, charging back from a four goal deficit at the final break to share the spoils. Nelson College kept Waimea to five goals combined in the second and third quarter to gain what should have been a matchwinning four goal advan-

passes to marked players but NCG picked up their speed through the court on attack and it paid dividends to have the game locked at 10-10 at the main break. Nelson College wing attack Paige Byers was active on attack and defence, while the Waimea defensive duo of Hannah Moreton and Summer Pritchard were working overtime to stifle NCG attacks. NCG took the lead by scoring the opening goal of the third quarter after three minutes of play. Of the six goals scored in the third quarter, NCG scored five of them.

Waimea wasted three goalscoring chances, with goal shoot Kate Bolton producing a timely offensive rebound to get her team its only goal of the quarter in the final minute. In a low scoring game, NCG's 15-11 advantage was a tough challenge for Waimea to pull back in the final 10 minutes. Waimea found its rhythm in the final quarter and charged home to tie the game with two minutes remaining. Both teams traded one final goal but neither could scramble in a game winner in the final 60 seconds.

Maternal pressure gets Ifill to sign with Tasman Utd SporTS Jacob Page Sports Editor

sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Mum was the word on Paul Ifill’s signing for Tasman United. The 36-year-old was unveiled as the marque signing for the first year National football league franchise on Thursday, but not before the mum’s of his Stoke-based football academy players put their two cents in. “I think all of the mum’s at the academy told me I had to sign here and you know that boys should always listen to mums.” The leading scorer in Wellington Phoenix history says he had no intention of being a bench player, despite the Achillies tendon issues that forced him to retire at the start of last year. He says Tasman was a chance for him to go out on his terms. “Given the injury, I think I retired earlier than I

CyClINg: Nelson cyclist George Bennett’s gritty effort in a gruelling Olympic road race finished with him crossing the line in 33rd on Sunday morning (NZ time). Bennett, who had just completed his first Tour de France, was 12 minutes behind eventual winner, Belgium’s Greg van Avermaet. RUgby: A late Fletcher Matthews try was enough to ensure the Nelson Bays Griffins clung on to the Seddon Shield, after a 19-16 win over Buller in Murchison on Saturday. Errors were almost the undoing of the holders but they settled their nerves late to beat a determined Buller outfit. FooTball: Nelson Suburbs will travel to play Ferrymead Bays in the Mainland Premier League this weekend. Suburbs sit in third on the league ladder but are unlikely to move ahead of either Coastal Spirit or Cashmere Technical as the campaign winds down. Tasman United women will welcome league leaders Cashmere Technical to Saxton Fields on Saturday in the women’s competition.

“Despite his injury setbacks and age, I believe he can be the top player in this league.” Paul talked up wanting to be a top four team, while Richard was happier to mellow expectations. “We want to be the best new franchise this season and finish above one of the established teams – I think that’s realistic,” he says. Tasman United’s home strip was unveiled with blue and white hoops, while an orange away strip will also be in use. Tasman United chairman Mark Sheehan says more player announcements should be expected in the coming weeks. Drew and Ruby climb wall of success Jacob Page

Drew Forrest and Ruby Friend each earned national lead rock climbing titles across a three round series completed last week in Auckland. For Drew it’s not a bad effort, considered he had to scale a 16 metre wall despite having a fear of heights. “Climbing was something I did to try to beat my fear of heights. “I wasn’t expecting to win, so it was good. Lead is rope climbing where the rope comes with you, while bouldering is no ropes where you fall onto a mat. “Lead is more about endurance; it starts out easy and gets progressively harder, while bouldering is about technique and balance. Drew says his dad Barry used to bring him down to Vertical Limits in Nelson as a child, but he only took it seriously three years ago. “This season especially I’ve trained a lot harder, going for placings.

Slow and steady wins Washbourn Gardens race Jacob Page

Ruby (left) and sister Grace Friend, along with Drew Forrest, are looking to take rock climbing to new heights in Nelson. Photo: Andrew Board. “I had a fear of heights still, so trying this sport is a way of trying to get past that.” Drew says he would like to make the New Zealand world championships team next year, but knows it will be tough when he leaves Nelson College for University. Ruby, who has international experience, says she’s always enjoyed the mental challenge of the

fringe sport. “Climbing is like problem solving, where you put your feet and your hands and the best way to climb.” The Nelson College for Girls pupil will go to the world championships in China in November and, with the sport having just been added to the 2020 Olympics, Ruby says she’s excited by the prospect. “I don’t know if New

Zealand would qualify as New Zealand is quite new to the sport.” The next focus will be the national lead championships in Christchurch and bouldering championships in Wellington, where Ruby will compete for prize money. Ruby’s younger sister Grace also competed and finished ninth in her grade, while Barry competed in the veterans section.

Daryl Nish and Josh Donnelly won a running race without being the fastest runners on Saturday. The duo paired up to win the Waimea Harriers twoperson relay at Washbourn Gardens. Both team members start at the same time and run in opposite directions around Queen Street, Hill Street, White Road, Paton Road and Wensley Road. Daryl says it is a race full of pacing and luck and, while he had competed in the

event plenty of times, it was a new experience winning it. “There will be fast runners who did 12km paired with the slowest walker who will do 4km, so you want to be middle of the pack to stand a chance. “I found the whole thing a bit hilly, I’m a bit unfit.” Daryl says he enjoys the event because of its point of difference. “It’s really mental, I think Josh and I did 7km each. “It’s a great event because, let’s be honest, running can get a little boring after a while.”
