A good game is to pick the cars that have featured in movies and music videos. There’s the time-travelling DeLorean with its gull-wing doors; Austin Powers’ E-Type ‘Shaguar’; a beautiful Hudson Hornet just like Doc Hudson in Cars; a stunning pink Cadillac to get you singing along; Thelma and Louise’s magnificent Ford Thunderbird; and a line-up of minis that would be perfect for Mr Bean, Goodbye Pork Pie, or a race through narrow streets in The Italian Job. The museum is built on the site of the Nelson Motor Vehicle Assembly Plant, which from 1965 to 1998 assembled more than 160,000 vehicles, including Triumph, Leyland, Jaguar, Daimler, Austin, Bristol, Honda and Land Rover. The plant may be long closed, but its memory lives on. A recent addition to the museum is a series of retro shopfronts, created by award-win-
ning Old Sign Studio – including a replica Milk Bar, Fashion Store, Caltex Service Station (a replica of the 1950’s Art Deco garage one that used to be in Tahuna) and the just-finished Four Square corner dairy – these sets add a real touch of nostalgia and fun to the museum and are the perfect backdrop for photos! Nelson Classic Car Museum is the perfect way to while away a few hours, imagining what it would be like to cruise along the highway in an attention-grabbing classic car. There’s plenty of free parking, you can refuel at Little Engine Eatery, serving up breakfast, lunch and the best coffee in Nelson, and the Museum Store is perfect for a memento, handcrafted keepsake or gift. Come and see Natureland’s Monarch butterflies Come along to Natureland and see our latest conservation and education project; breed and release of monarch butterflies in our purpose-built tunnel house. We are aiming to hold regular releases of butterflies; these will be notified on Facebook so check, like, and follow our page to be kept up to date. IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) haven’t given monarchs a status, but we know that the monarch populations are declining in New Zealand. Climate change is impacting as is the use of pesticides and herbicides, and predation by wasps. Breeding in a protected environment like our tunnel house means monarch’s that would be predated are saved and have the opportunity to breed for a short time, before they are released outside. Each monarch can lay 300-400 eggs, and up to 40 per day, so our tunnel house acts as a kind of insurance policy for
the released population. The education side of the programme will see the females released and the males kept for public interaction in our native walk-through aviary. We have planted butterfly-friendly flowers to feed the males along the walkway in the aviary so visitors can see them up close. We are also taking school groups through the tunnel house and our keeper kids programme will be focused on the monarch butterfly lifecycle and will have the opportunity to hunt for eggs, care for caterpillars and plant seedlings in our plant nursery. What can do at home to support monarch butterflies? • Butterfly-friendly plants like: - marigolds - zinnia - echinacea - alyssum - hebe - swan plants for caterpillars • Kill any wasps you see & get rid of wasp’s nests around your property. You might even like to create a
protected area for breeding monarchs. This is fairly high maintenance, but you are welcome to come in and talk to our staff and/ or check out our tunnel house. Remember to support our New to You shop in Buxton Square by shopping, donating, and volunteering with us. All money raised goes towards supporting our conservation and education work. Nelson’s premier escape room is great for entertainment Looking for some fun entertainment over summer? Xscape Space is an exciting new business which has recently opened in Richmond and is locally owned and operated by Lindsay and Genie Bradley. Xscape Space is our region’s premier provider of 7 different escape room experiences – the place where you can test your brain, have a good laugh, and discover a whole new side of your friends, family and workmates. You will enter immersive worlds to recover a priceless work of art, rob a bank or break out of prison. Together you will uncover hidden clues and puzzles, while racing against the clock to escape! Escape Rooms are fast gaining
popularity around New Zealand and the world and Xscape Space is being well received here in Nelson. “Genie, myself, and our two children came up with the designs and ideas for the rooms during lockdown,” says Lindsay. “We opened on 26 November, and since then, our business has been generating lots of interest. We’ve had some families coming through, and various businesses which have come in for staff functions.” Lindsay says they have set up 7 rooms at Xscape Space, two of which are identical, so for corporate gatherings, you could have your man-
agement and sales teams competing against each other.” Everyone starts at the same time, they get the same clues, and whoever gets
out first claims the ‘bragging rights.’ Most of the game play at Xscape Space is more suited to those aged 11 years and upwards and can be a great activity for parties. “While younger children will enjoy some aspects of the rooms, it’s best if the under 11’s are accompanied by a parent or caregiver to assist them with the clues.” For some people the idea of being in an escape room can be ‘a bit scary’ but you are never actually locked in the room, as
there is always an exit door that is not locked. Xscape Space is located at 2a Estuary Place, Richmond (off lower Queen Street). To check for game room availability, email: bookings@xscapespace.co.nz or phone 021 972 221. Opening Hours: Wednesday 3-9pm. Thurs 2-9pm. Friday 10am – 9pm. Sat 10am – 9pm. Sun 10am – 9pm. Enjoy a weekend of wild foods and stunning scenery Coming up on 12 March 2022, the 33rd annual Hokitika Wildfoods Festival is an iconic event you don’t want to miss! It is a celebration of the West Coast’s unique wild food and lifestyle, accompanied by premier entertainment. Destination Westland event coordinator, Andy Thompson says it’s fantastic that the event can go ahead in the orange setting, but he reminds people that vaccine passes are an entry requirement. At the Wildfoods Festival, you can try everything from Huhu Grubs and Mountain Oysters to Hungarian Fried Bread and Fijian Kava. “People love the exotic meats done in various different ways and there’s always traditional foods as well, but with a ‘wild twist’,” says Andy.

“Last year, we introduced foraging options for vegetarians and vegans because we know that eating wild vegetables and foraging is a ‘happening thing.’ So, we’re really encouraging stallholders to incorporate that.” Andy says it’s an area which is continuing to grow and is very much part of their evolving festival. The festival has an exciting lineup of entertainment this year. “We’ve been really lucky to be able to book Sir Dave Dobbyn as our headline act supported by Zed, Greg Johnson and also Cassie Henderson who is a young, up and coming singer from Christchurch.” Andy says Destination Westland is also excited to have a new beer partner – Garage Project, a Wellington-based brewery. The ever popular ‘Feral Fashion’ wearable arts style competition sees some incredible entries. “In our first category, you can enter
as a man or a woman, plus we have ‘Feral Flock’ for families or groups, and our ‘Wild Child,’ category” says Andy. Wildfoods is one of the better priced events around, with a great kid’s area onsite, so the whole family can come along and enjoy the festival. “Although accommodation is getting a bit tight, there’s still room at the local campgrounds, so why not bring your caravan or motorhome down from Nelson and make a week-
end of it?” There is also accommodation available outside of Hokitika. The Hokitika Wildfoods Festival takes place on Saturday, 12 March 2022 at Cass Square, Hokitika. Hope to see you there! To purchase tickets, visit www.wildfoods. co.nz.

Höglund Glassblowing Studio - a family affair When Ola and Marie of Höglund Glass met at boarding school in Sweden at the age of fifteen they had no idea that their meeting would eventually launch the brand for which they are now famous the world over. Both worked at the Boda Glassworks before being accepted to study at the Orrefors Glass School in southern Sweden. They then spent three years in Swaziland establishing a glass workshop, the beginning of their glass-blowing adventures in other parts of the world. Hearing about a glass business in Hokitika, Ola and Marie worked there for three years before setting up a glass studio at Craft Habitat in Richmond. In 1993 the couple moved to a brand-new glass-blowing complex in Lansdowne Road, Appleby, which has been the Höglund Glass home base ever since. For the last 12 years Marie and Ola have been making glass in Queensland, and then Central Otago during the winters,
while their son Ossie and his wife Annie have maintained the Nelson studio. Now back on home turf, the whole family are enjoying creating glass work together. Their other son Oliver continues to make glass lampshades in the Queensland studio which are sold in the Nelson gallery as well. While still producing the highly complex large glass pieces Höglund Art Glass are renowned for, they also have a range of beautiful items priced under $100. These include exquisite blown-glass birds, the popular vinegar and oil bottles, goblets and a wide range of exquisite dichroic glass jewellery. The pendants, earrings and cufflinks in rainbow-like colours have become extremely popular with people wanting a unique piece in their jewellery collection. If you are looking for a fascinating and unique experience these holidays, be sure to head out to Höglund Art Glass to enjoy the extensive studio, and on weekday mornings you can watch the glassblowers magically blow molten glass into all manner of
designs. Höglund glass can be found in public and private collections around the world and Nelson is fortunate to have the heart of this highly successful glass-making business on their doorstep. With each piece individually made, you will find the perfect unique gift that can be wrapped beautifully and sent to any location.

Over the summer months, there’s so much to see and do in the Nelson region. For starters, you could pack a picnic and head to Tahunanui Beach to enjoy its golden sands and calm blue seas. Take a refreshing dip in the ocean, build sandcastles, go for peaceful walks, play frisbee, cricket or volleyball, or maybe go kayaking or paddleboarding. If you enjoy hiking, running or mountainbiking, the Grampians are a group of steep hills behind the city centre. There are numerous tracks of varying lengths to explore, with access points from Upper Collingwood Street, Blick Terrace in the Brook
Valley or Market Road in Bishopdale. All of the tracks provide fabulous views across Tasman Bay. The Barnicoat Range Walkway, which runs between Marsden Valley and Richmond, is also great for walking, trail running and mountainbiking. The walkway weaves through pine forest and offers fabulous views over the Marsden and Ngawhatu Valleys, Tasman Bay and beyond. Accessible all year round, Cable Bay Walkway is a beautiful coastal track which is located 15 minutes from Nelson city. The walk-
way will take you over private farmland and provides gorgeous views towards Nelson, the Abel Tasman National Park, Cable Bay and Peppin Island. Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve, which is situated on SH6, 45 minutes from Nelson, has a myriad short walks through beautiful podocarp forest and which track along the crystal clear Pelorus River. On a hot summer’s day, you can plunge into one of its deep swimming holes, then laze in the sun on the riverbank. The summer holidays are also
a great time to explore Nelson’s art galleries. Situated in a beautiful heritage building, Red Art Gallery is filled with beautiful designware, art, ceramics, glass and jewellery by talented local and nationwide artists, and you also visit the nearby Quiet Dog Gallery which is housed in an industrial warehouse space. The gallery has a lively programme of exhibitions and aims to ‘bring you something different.’ Adjacent to picturesque Queen’s Gardens, the Suter Art Gallery holds a nationally-significant collec-

tion of art and presents a varied programme of exhibitions. Located on Achilles Avenue, Parker Gallery supports a wide range of artists from the local region and around New Zealand, and in a beautiful space in Trafalgar Square, Atelier Studio/Gallery promotes the works of emerging contemporary artists. Nelson city is also brimming with boutique shops for relaxed holiday browsing, from designer clothing, to handcrafted jewellery, to unique gift and souvenir stores.
