A holiday message from the Mayor Tēnā koutou e te whānau o Whakatū, me ngā manuhiri kua mauru mai It’s been a year with plenty of challenges but thanks to our high Covid-19 vaccination rates and the introduction of vaccine passes it looks like we’re in a great position to enjoy our holiday break and embrace what is a slightly different new normal. Lots of people have been talking to me about staying local this summer and welcoming family and friends into the region. Now is the perfect chance to explore your own city, or a stunning little village not too far away, or even a short break to one of three national parks on our doorstep. For inspiration on what we’ve got in our own backyard take a look at Nelson Tasman 100 ways
to experience the region https:// www.nelsontasman.nz/visit-nelson-tasman/one-hundred-ways/. We know our hospitality and tourism sectors have been doing it tough throughout the pandemic period and every dollar spent locally will provide a “multiplier” effect as it circulates throughout our local economy, keeping businesses open and people in jobs. It would be easy to make an appeal just based on parochialism but I think that misses the point of the many blessings we have living where we do. Give yourself permission to stop and recharge the batteries and maybe find a new favourite destination or activity. Go urban, go rural, go wild places and people. Do active or adventure or just stand and stare at the awesomeness of what’s around us.
Christmas treat pet warning Christmas is almost here and it comes with an increased risk of pets eating things they shouldn’t. Pet insurance provider PD Insurance’s chief operating officer, Michelle Le Long, says the holidays are a particularly haz-
There’s lots to smile about. While it shouldn’t be necessary for me to extol the virtues of our wonderful food and beverage, this is the season to experience some of the best produce in the world - so fill your boots and your pantry. And, of course, getting about is made easy and good for the envi-
ardous time for pets. “Over the last year almost 10 per cent of our claims in NZ for dogs were due to accidental ingestion,” Michelle says. “These ranged from dogs who ate something poisonous and needed to be treated with drips or medication, through to dogs who had an obstruction and were choking, and dogs who needed surgical removal of objects from their trachea or

‘The Gorge’ is a mountainbiker’s paradise Situated just south of Nelson, the Wairoa Gorge Mountain Bike Park is home to over 70 kilometres of world-class hand-built single track. The park is made up of thick native beech with small patches of pine plantations and plenty of natural features to enjoy. ‘The Gorge’ is owned and operated by the Nelson Mountain Bike Club for the benefit of members and visitors. “The park was established more than a decade ago and there’s been over 20 million dollars spent on it,” says Operations Manager, Greg McIntyre. “There’s no park like this anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere, with trails that are extremely well built by some really good builders and designers.” They start at Grade 3 and go all the way up to Grade 6, and you’ll
get almost 1000m descending on every top to bottom run. “The trails have some great ‘catches’ at the bottom, so riders have somewhere to go.” There are 40 different trails at the park, whether it’s your first time in the gorge or if you are an experienced rider. “It’s probably the best intermediate grade riding in the country,” says Greg. A typical day at The Gorge consists of 5 runs downhill from two different shuttle drop-off points. Both are close to 1000m up the mountain. Private shuttles, scheduled shuttles, express shuttles and half-day shuttles are available. “With Ebikes, you can get one ride up to the top, then spend all day riding whatever trails you want.” “When we are operating, we have the gate open, there’s a cool river you can walk around, and nice walks you can check out.” There are also some great options for those who want to stay at Wairoa

Gorge. Barry’s Lodge at the base of the mountain is rustic hostelstyle accommodation – book the whole lodge or just a room. Gibbs Lodge is not your average mountain hut, with 5 bedrooms and a twin-share. “It’s a great mountain lodge with a pizza oven and views all the way down to Tonga Bay,” says Greg. “It’s quite popular staying at the top and gives people the flexibility to do what they like.” To check hut availability, visit

Nelson Fun Park - a fun experience for families In the heart of beautiful Tahunanui Beach, Nelson Fun Park is the perfect place, full of excitement and fun in a safe environment for the whole family, with the Hydroslide, Bumper Boat Rides and Mini Golf. The business is owned and operated by two local families with Michelle and Karen taking care of the day-to-day operations. The Fun Park has been a Nelson icon for over 30 years with affordable activities for the whole family. The Hydroslide is $10 for one hour, Mini Golf is $6 per person and Bumper Boats are $9 per ride. “We do a great combo deal for all activities for just $21 (saving of $4),” says Karen. If you haven’t got time to do everything in the one day, you can do the combo over a few days if you like. Nelson Fun Park is the perfect venue for birthday parties. “We have a party table you can book, BBQ tables with umbrellas which are all free of charge,” says Karen. “Bring your own birthday cake and party food, watch the children play and leave all the stress behind!” Contact the Fun Park for your party or group bookings. “Recently, when it was raining, we had
a group of 40 children here and because our hydroslide is fully enclosed, it makes a great wet weather venue,” says Karen. “We also have a shop onsite with ice creams, drinks and slushies available.” The premises is currently operating under traffic light orange, and only people with a My Vaccine Pass are allowed to enter. Children under the age of 12 years and 3 months don’t need to provide a My Vaccine pass to enter. Face coverings are mandatory upon entry except for those who are exempt. Perfect all year round The Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve is 250ha of Crown land that includes Kaiteriteri Beach, Kākā Point Historic Reserve, Kaiteriteri estuary, Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park and the hills with native bush surrounding the beach and estuary. Businesses on the reserve, including the Kaiteriteri Reserve Camp, Kaiteriteri Reserve Apartments,
Kaiteriteri Store, Waterfront Restaurant & Gone Burgers and the Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park fully fund the reserve and 100% of our profits are invested back into Kaiteriteri. A mecca for the outdoor enthusiast with a safe calm bay for paddle boarding. Sailing, swimming and fishing are also popular pastimes. Many visitors make great use of our mountainbike park and nearby vineyard laden roads for road cycling. Child-friendly activities, safe
beach and nearby walks make us a summer holiday must on your to do list. Waterfront restaurant, directly oceanside to the beach, makes for a fine spot to enjoy à la carte dining, with local and seasonal produce and some of the best regional wines on offer. If it’s a more casual feast, then Gone Burgers ticks the boxes with in-house made ingredients and packed full of flavour. A stay in the campground can be a family affordable break away, or
splash out for a girls weekend or special occasion and stay in one of our beach front apartments. Cabins are also on offer with plenty of space to park the boat and bikes. Kitchens are free of use for campers and many a fish caught directly in the bay can be
seen being prepped for dinner. The reserve has something for everyone, and can be as relaxing or as adventure-filled as you wish. The Tasman sunshine never disappoints and the entire region is at your feet when you base yourself here at Kaiteriteri.

Over the summer break, there are so many fabulous places to explore in Nelson. For starters, you could walk up to The Centre of New Zealand to take in the spectacular views of the city and Tasman Bay. Nearby, you’ll find The Matai Valley, a popular
recreational area with numerous picnic and swimming spots. You can walk along the Boulder Bank, which is a 13 km long stretch of rocky substrate surrounded by the sea. At the port end, you’ll find the historic Boulder Bank Lighthouse – climb
the staircase inside and enjoy the stunning views. Summer is also the ideal time to visit Tahunanui Beach with its golden sands and warm waters. It’s the perfect place for swimming, kayaking, windsurfing, jogging, walking or volleyball and there’s a chil-
dren’s playground, skateboard area, BMX track and public tennis court within the Tahunanui Recreation Reserve. Back in the city centre, Queens Gardens is a lovely place to bring the family where you can feed the ducks, enjoy a stroll around the beauti-
ful gardens and have a picnic by the lake. You’ll love Miyazu Japanese Garden too with its ponds, bridges, cherry trees and rock gardens, and picturesque Isel Park in Stoke, with pathways that lead through lush greenery and remarkable trees.
