Turf Hotel has big New Year’s Eve planned The Turf Hotel in central Stoke has a really big New Year’s Eve planned with two great bands lined up. “The first band will start in the garden bar at 6pm, with Philip from Flipside, who will play to a nice late afternoon/evening session which goes through to 9pm,” says Janelle Clark who co-owns The Turf Hotel with her husband Scott. “Then we’ve got a really cool band – Route 66 that will take over from 9 o’clock to late, so we’re expecting a really busy night. We will have bar meals available, and we always provide our courtesy van. If people have their vaccine passports, it’s good for them to come and have a boogie.” The summer months are a great time to come to The Turf which always has plenty of fun things happening. Every Sunday afternoon, there’s usually some form of entertainment or band in the garden from 3pm to 6pm. “In the New Year, we will resume our Mammoth Meat Raffle which has been going really well,” says Janelle. That’s every Sunday afternoon at 2.30pm and everyone’s welcome.

“It’s $1 a ticket, so people buy them during the week and generally we have around $1200 worth of meat packs up for grabs. There are usually around 50 prizes, so everyone tends to get something which is really cool.” Adjacent to The Turf Hotel, The Bach Bar & Restaurant is the ideal place to bring your family or friends over summer. “It’s a friendly, welcoming environment with a really cool kid’s corner with a tv and a dvd player, puzzles and colouring in for the kids to do. So, Mum and Dad can have a
nice meal and the kids can play down the end which works really well.” The Bach has a great summer menu with delicious gourmet pizzas, burgers, Roast of the Day, and a variety of salads available.” The restaurant has started to cater for more functions in recent times. “We can come up with menus to suit groups and families, and we can provide set menus, buffets or platter menus.” “We can offer exclusive use of The Bach for 50 people or more,
“ o i n s s R o t f s n a s g a T y t and we have had 21st functions, m wedding receptions, work do’s, t wakes, etc. For special occasions, b we are happy to decorate the res- M taurant with helium balloons for you.” The Bach has got capacity for 100 people or more if it’s just people mingling with canapés. The Turf Hotel and The Bach Bar & Restaurant is located at 228 Songer Street, Stoke. To find out more, visit www.turfhotel.co.nz

Ride the Summer Beach Bus If you’re heading to the beach this summer consider including the Tāhuna Summer Beach Bus in the day’s activities.
The chance to ride around Nelson’s stunning coastline in a double-decker bus is back, with the Beach Bus service running regularly every day from Monday 27 December until Monday 31 January (including public holidays). The bus departs from either Tāhuna Beach Holiday Park or Nelson city i-SITE (Trafalgar Street bus stop), stopping at Tāhunanui Beach in each direction. Popular, particularly with children, the service gives the thousands of holiday makers staying in the Tāhunanui area a carless way of getting to the retail delights of the central city. Alternatively, city dwellers and visitors can ride to a day at the beach without parking hassles (or sand in the car). The beach’s shoreline has enjoyed many facility upgrades in recent years and the long family-friendly beach is complemented with foreshore activities including a hydroslide and bumper boats, ProKarts
BEACH BUS TIMETABLE and ProBounce, ten1 nis and sand volleyball courts, skate park, roller 2 skating 3rink, BBQ sites and two children’s playgrounds, while the Holiday Park offers a café and mini-golf open to the public. The bus service is a collaboration between Tāhuna Beach Holiday Park and Nelson City Council and vaccine passes are not required to ride.

Attractions Marchfest 2022 Situated just south of Nelson, the Wairoa Gorge Mountain Bike Park is home to over 70 kilometres of worldclass hand-built single track. The park is made up of thick native beech with small patches of pine plantations and plenty of natural features to enjoy. ‘The Gorge’ is
owned and operated by the Nelson Mountain Bike Club for the benefit of members and visitors. “The park was established more than a decade ago and there’s been over 20 million dollars spent on it,” says Operations Manager, Greg McIntyre. “There’s no park like this anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere, with trails that are extremely well built by some really good
builders and designers.” They start at Grade 3 and go all the way up to Grade 6, and you’ll get almost 1000m descending on every top to bottom run. “The trails have some great ‘catches’ at the bottom, so riders have somewhere to go.” There are 40 different trails at the park, whether it’s your first time in the gorge or if you are an experienced rider. “It’s probably the best intermediate grade riding in the country,” says Greg. A typical day at The Gorge consists of 5 runs downhill from two different shuttle drop-off points. Both are close to 1000m up the mountain.
Private shuttles, scheduled shuttles, express shuttles and half-day shuttles are available. “With E-bikes, you can get one ride up to the top, then spend all day riding whatever trails you want.” “When we are operating, we have the gate open, there’s a cool river you can walk around, and nice walks you can check out.” There are also some great options for those who want to stay at Wairoa Gorge. Barry’s Lodge at the base of the mountain is rustic hostel-style accommodation – book the whole lodge or just a room. Gibbs Lodge is not your average mountain hut, with
5 bedrooms and a twin-share. “It’s a great mountain lodge with a pizza oven and views all the way down to Tonga Bay,” says Greg. “It’s quite popular staying at the top and gives people the flexibility to do what they like.” To check hut availability, visit www. thegorge.nz. “The gorge has become a pretty sensational place to visit.” To maximise your Nelson riding experience, you can join the Nelson Mountain Biking Club. Visit www.nelsonmtb.club. NMTBC manage and maintain the trails and accommodation with a small crew and a large number of volunteers.
