Motel owners cash in on tourist spike Andrew Board and Kate Russell Motel owners in Nelson are cashing in on a stellar summer tourist season and selling up to outside investors. More than a dozen motels are either on the market or have been recently sold. The latest to be sold include Palazzo, Harbourside, Cedar Grove, Carmel Court, Greens, Laughing Kiwi

and Riverlodge. The owner of another luxury motel that has recently been sold told Nelson Weekly that it is a great time to sell. He didn’t want to be named because he has yet to inform staff that the sale has been completed, but says Nelson “has that confidence”. “There is an under supply of housing stock, strong tourism sector and thanks to the likes

of Jetstar, domestic tourists are starting to find us,” he says. “Motels in Nelson would have had one of their busiest seasons.” Owner of Palazzo Motor Lodge on Rutherford St, Kiara Barnett, says she sold the motel last month. “Tourism as a whole has got better, and it’s a good industry to have a business in – I can

An elderly Nelson man has had to leave his wife of 40 years after daily “emotional, verbal and physical abuse”, Nelson Weekly has learned. It is the latest elder abuse incident involving a family member, which Age Concern Nelson Tasman says make up more than three-quarters of elder abuse cases. About half of abusers are adult children. The man, who we will call “Mr Smith” to protect his identity, told Nelson Weekly via Age Concern that he was his wife’s fulltime carer and had felt responsible for continuing to look after her. But he had to start barricading himself into his bedroom at nights to avoid the abuse. He says the ongoing abuse was having an increasingly poor effect on his own mental and physical health. “I was highly anxious, nervous, lost a lot of confidence and was depressed. I had high blood pressure and had even taken up smoking again because of the stress. I felt like a prisoner in my

own home,” he says. Mr Smith says his wife’s actions also spread to their friends who she would verbally abuse and make unfounded accusations against. One friend even went so far as to put out a restraining order against her. That was when Mr Smith sought help from Age Concern, which was able to help him move into a new house. This week is Elder Abuse Awareness Week and Age Concern Nelson Tasman’s Mal Drummond says he receives approximately 100 referrals of elder abuse and self-neglect every year, including financial, psychological and physical abuse. But he is hopeful for a change in

They say they put their motel on the market 11 months ago for personal reasons and have had more interest in the past few months than at any time earlier. “The industry is in an excellent position.” Bayleys real estate agent Gill Ireland has sold four motels in the past month with buyers coming from around the country. Nearly three dozen people across the country have been charged under the new Harmful Digital Communications Act within the first year of the law passing, including two in Nelson. Since July last year, a cruel catalogue of sinister cyber harassment has come before the courts from Invercargill to Auckland, as police take action against the very worst bullies targeting victims online. Justice Minister Amy Adams is hailing the act a success with 35 people prosecuted to date. The range of actions that has been caught by the new legislation is seemingly wide. While some have been collared for publically posting explicit photos of ex-partners on social-media sites, others have been pinged over allegedly harmful private emails or text messages. Ms Adams says she was surprised at the large number of prosecutions, indicating the act was long overdue. “I’m very proud of the legislation we have. “In the time the law has been passed the real necessity for

Answers demanded over Mapua wharf blowout Simon Bloomberg

One of Tasman district’s longest serving councillors Trevor Norriss has always called a spade a spade and he did just that on Thursday in a heated debate about a “huge” budget blowout on the Mapua Wharf ’s Shed 4. Trevor was speaking out at a full council meeting in Richmond after hearing that council’s commercial activity had overspent its budget by $577,000, with “the majority of this overspend” relating to the work being undertaken at the Mapua Wharf. It was the first time councillors had been given any indication of the extent of the overspend and Trevor wanted to know why they had not been informed earlier. “In all my time in this council, I’ve never seen a figure like this come from a commercial subcommittee,” Trevor told the SP

meeting. “There’d better be a bloody good explanation, that’s all I can say, Mr Mayor.” Trevor, who is chair of the engineering services committee and been on council for almost 21 years, also said he was concerned that staff had not followed the right process by failing to inform councillors about the overspend. “In engineering, or with any other staff, if there is an overspend they come into council and ask for it. I want to know how the services for some of that work were completed and if they went through the same processes that council has to follow for everything else. When I read this, it’s not just a little cost overrun, it’s huge. In fact, I’m starting to worry about the whole set up, the way the commercial activities in this council are run.” Councillors Judene Edgar and Mark Greening also criticised the lack of trans-

parency surrounding the budget blowout. Judene said it was astounding that “you can suddenly get to this stage and say it could be $500,000 or so over budget” after the Shed 4 building was opened in December. Mark said “council does not tolerate overspending” and supported a resolution, that was later passed, that council should stop any further capital spending on the Mapua Wharf development until a report on the

Councillors found out about a massive overspend at the Mapua wharf development for the first time on Thursday.

overspend is available on June 30. Chief executive Lindsay McKenzie and mayor Richard Kempthorne downplayed the overspend, with Lindsay saying that all the questions would be addressed in the June 30 report. Lindsay said he was “not prepared, at this point to make any judgement about prudence or otherwise, about the commitments, until I see the explanations as well”. Lindsay said there had been an agreement to wait until the report was released before the issue was discussed, but Judene disputed that statement. “Nothing has been agreed to and I’m a little surprised that it can take this long to know about all of these problems,” Judene says. “From the opening of the building in December to now, it’s been six months and possibly $500,000, which seems like a lot of money and lot of time for a lot of we don’t know.”

Car thefts, arsonists cause havoc

A week of destruction from stolen cars being set alight shows no signs of abating, as police urge locals to lock their cars. Fire fighters have spent five of the last seven mornings putting out cars that had been stolen, taken for a joy ride and then set alight. The first was last Monday, when a car stolen from Christchurch was found burning on Sovereign St, near Guppy Park. The latest was exactly a week later when a car was found burnt out in Appleby. On Tuesday and Wednesday three cars were found abandoned; on Central Rd, deep in the Maitai Valley, in a forestry block on Fireball Rd up the Tantragee. Nelson Fire Service officer Craig

Davies two cars smashed through some “quite substantial” forestry gates before being ditched and set alight. The owner of the car left on Fireball Rd, which still had children’s car seats strapped into the back seat, arrived at the scene as they worked to put his car out. “He had seen it on Facebook and came up, he was pretty pissed off,” says Craig. Law breaking was taken to another level on Thursday morning when a group of four males added a ram-raid to their list of felonies.

The stolen red Mazda was used as a battering ram at Big Barrel Liquor Store in Gloucester St, around 4am. The four males managed to push the door open enough to steal several boxes of beer before setting the car alight on Quebec Rd in Washington Valley, sometime after 6am. Craig says they attended the latest fire just before 7am. “This isn’t a good situation, people’s cars are getting stolen and torched, and looking at the skid marks around the place they are pretty lethal people.” Big Barrel owner Ranbir Singh says he feels sorry for the young men who broke into his store. “They are ruining their lives, after

Nelson response sergeant Kyle Bruning says the biggest inconvenience is to the owners of the cars who have to deal with claims and are left for a significant period without a vehicle. “While we’re having to investigate these each night, it’s worse for the poor victims waking up in the morning and wanting to jump in their car and drive to work only to find that it’s not there and that it’s been burnt out somewhere.” He says the investigation into the thefts is ongoing. “It’s an active investigation, we’re after help from the public to be vigilant and help us catch these people.” No arrests have been made, if anyone has information they should contact police on 546 3840.

If they start thinking nobody can catch them they won’t stop, and who knows what will happen? “What if somebody gets killed or seriously injured, hopefully the police move fast so it doesn’t happen again with even bigger consequences.”

Funeral insurance ‘plays on people’s fears’: Consumer NZ are taking a hard line following their latest report that shows people with funeral insurance are paying a lot more than they should. “Funeral insurance marketing plays on people’s fears about being a burden on their families,” says Consumer NZ chief executive Sue Chetwin. “It’s easy to end up paying thousands more in premiums than the insurance policy will pay out. “If you can’t afford to keep up payments and want to cancel, there’s no refund and your money will be gone.”

The review found that by age 84 the amount paid in premiums exceeded the $10,000 cover with most policies. “You could pay anything from 10 to 100 percent more in premiums than the policy was worth,” says Sue. Milestone Homes new speedway sponsor Simon Bloomberg

Milestone Homes Nelson director Simon Collett has always been a speedway fan, regularly attending meetings at the Top of the South Speedway and even putting the pedal to the metal in the Demolition Derby. So it's no surprise that Milestone Homes decided to contact the Nelson Speedway Association when it was looking for a club to sponsor earlier this year. And the end result of that initial contact was announced last week, when the two organisations signed a sponsorship deal giving Milestone Homes naming rights for the Top of the South Speedway for the next nine years. "We were having a discussion at the office about sponsorship to get involved in the community and Simon suggested the speedway," Milestone Homes Nelson manager Adam Hills says. "Simon has been a speedway fan for years and drove in two derbies, so he was keen on the idea. "We thought speedway was a good fit

too because it's a family orientated club that attracts our target market. It's also really popular in Nelson and has a high profile site, so it was exactly the kind of club we wanted to sponsor." Nelson Speedway Association president Wayne Martin says they are delighted with the new sponsorship after raffling the naming rights to the track for the last two seasons. Wayne says the sponsorship gives the association some financial security heading into what will be a busy 2016-2017 season. "We are really happy to have these guys come on board," Wayne says. "We've got a big season coming up with 18 meetings, so this sponsorship is a big help." Although Wayne and Adam would not disclose how much the deal was worth, Wayne says it is "a substantial amount". Wayne also says the timing of the new sponsorship deal "is good for us because we don't get any income over winter and we still have to pay the bills". The Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway will have its first race meeting in October.

Kelvin and Helen Banks’ entry into the Nelson Rose Society may have been "accidental", but 45 years later the longserving husband and wife duo have been rewarded with the society’s highest honour – the Frank Penn Memorial Award. Helen joined the society back in 1971 – all because she took part in a radio show quiz. “The society were holding an autumn show in the Bowater Cars Showroom and, as part of the lead up, the radio programme were running quizzes with a prize of a rose bush,” says Helen. “I won three of the bushes and I received a letter asking me to join the society.” With two little boys, and not knowing many people in town, Kelvin encouraged her to join. “I was very shy in those days and Kelvin said ‘you better go meet some people’, so I did.” Kelvin became a member 14 years later, and together they have been “mainstays” for the society and there isn’t a role they haven’t played. They have both been office bearers, judges, and show convenors for five national titles. Helen still holds the position of secretary, while Kelvin has

Wanda Doocey, from Nelson Laser Clinic, is having amazing results removing any trace of tattoos, and the same goes for unwanted hair. One by one people have walked through the doors of Nelson Laser Clinic for hair or tattoo removal services and one by one they have walked out as success stories. Unwanted body hair can affect people’s confidence and even restrict the clothes they wear, thanks to Wanda, some of Nelson Laser Clinic’s results have been, quite literally, life changing and the best thing about her service is that “it’s not as expensive as you think.” Many people mistakenly believe that the process of laser removal will cost a fortune, but Wanda has had the satisfaction of pleasantly surprising a number of clients with the actual cost, and encourages

18 Nile Street, Nelson

people to contact her to enjoy a free, no obligation consultation. While hair removal can generally be achieved after four to six sessions, tattoo removal depends on multiple factors. However, not all of Wanda’s clients desire the total removal of a tattoo and after just a couple of sessions, the original can be considerably lightened, allowing a much better tattoo to replace it. A face to face consultation is the best way for clients to gain a full understanding of the laser removal process, although if people wish to send in a photo of their tattoo, Wanda is more than happy to give an estimated cost. While Wanda is a fully qualified laser specialist who knows exactly how to achieve the best outcome for her clients, Nelson Laser Clinic’s successful results are also due to using the latest, medical grade laser technology. The most important

(In the I.N.P. Medical Centre)

thing for Wanda is that her clients’ skin remains perfect at all times and by using the best equipment available on the market, Wanda has been able to achieve the permanent removal of tattoos and hair with no burns, no scarring - no damage at all to client’s skin. With so many clients satisfied with their results, Wanda is looking forward to transforming many other people’s lives in the future. Give Wanda at Nelson Laser Clinic a call today to see how she can help you.

Brass band's 'Smartweek' aims for digital up-skill big upset win Simon Bloomberg

Nelson City Brass Band is the best in the region after a big upset win the Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast regional contest over Queen’s Birthday weekend. Eight bands competed over three days, including bands from as far away as Canterbury. Under the baton of the band’s new conductor, Nigel Weeks, Nelson Brass had a historic victory over the weekend, emerging as the champion band and overall contest winner. The band achieved first place in the Test piece and Stage March as well as second in the Hymn selection. This gave them the highest points over all, making them the aggregate winner for the weekend. In addition to this, Nelson City Brass also took out first place in the Entertainment competition and third place in the Street March. The win was a dramatic upset with Nelson City Brass, a C grade band, beating all rivals, including Marlborough District Brass, an A Grade band, and guest band Alpine Energy Timaru Brass, a B Grade band. Adjudicator Kevin Dell remarked that he was impressed by the technical ability of the band, the quality of the sound they produced and musicianship displayed. Nelson City Brass now set their sights on the National Brass Band contest in Napier in July.

If you are one of those digitally-challenged dinosaurs who still looks up at the sky when someone mentions the Cloud, you should think about attending some of the free Smartweek workshops starting at the Richmond Library later his month. Smartweek has been organised as part of a new digital action plan to help anyone in Nelson and Tasman come up to speed with digital technology. It is supported by the Tasman district and Nelson city councils, as well as the Nelson Regional Development Agency and Nelson-Tasman Chamber of Commerce and runs from June 27 to July 3. "SmartWeek is planned as an easy-to-understand programme of workshops to give people ideas, answer questions and show them where to go next," Nelson-Tasman regional digital coordinator Karen Lee says. "If it’s successful in Richmond then we’ll roll it out in other towns and areas - it’s all about local people helping local people." The Richmond SmartWeek is

Photo: Simon Bloomberg. sponsored by Richmond Unlimited and the Richmond Library, and chair of Richmond Unlimited Brent Cheyne says the workshops are "very relevant" for Richmond businesses. "We’re keen to see as many people get involved as possible," Brent says.

"The internet is now part of how we will all do business, it’s up to all of us to get the best we can out of it." Smartweek will be launched with a breakfast at the Wooden Spoon from 7am to 8.30am on June 27, followed by the first workshop in the Richmond Library from 10am to 12pm.

Workshops will cover a range of topics, including an introduction to Windows 10 for seniors, digital photography, cloud accounting and Instagram. The full SmartWeek programme can be found on the website wearedigital.nz/ smartweek

for our money has exploded this year. As the Civil Libertarian P.J. O’Rourke once stated, “Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys.” Dan McGuire. Poison drop: As a Brook Valley resident, I am not looking forward to the aerial drop of 26.5 tonne of Brodifacoum by the Brook Sanctuary Trust. It’s been an eyeopener into the industry of poisons. Richard Prosser, NZ First MP, gave a talk called “Beyond 1080” yesterday. It was disheartening to hear that New Zealand has met the international standards of being TBfree for the last ten years. During seven of these ten years, baits containing 5.44 tonne of pure 1080 has been dropped over 2.221 million hectares surrounding livestock. This report does not include areas of ground control, other poisons or the other three years. (Annual Report on the Aerial Use of 1080’ (2014), Environmental Protection Authority). It makes me question how safe our meat is and other farm produce? As a nation relying on export, this makes no sense. Nor is the acceptance of inhumane suffering of any animal. Prosser rightly voiced a need for different management strategies. Helen Black. Locals gather for longest lunch Brittany Spencer

Rachel Atkinson, left, and her son Mason, 6, were joined for lunch by over forty people at Burrell Park on Saturday for the Tahuna Longest Lunch. Photo: Brittany Spencer.

The table was lined with bowls and the smell of soup wafted around, enticing over 45 locals to turn up for first Tahunanui’s Longest Lunch. Run by the Tahunanui Community Centre, the Saturday lunchtime event saw locals bonding over fresh soup and buns, and community activator Katie Hughes says she couldn’t have been happier.

Locals of all ages, and even a few tourists, joined in on the games and lunch at Burrell Park. “It was a fantastic day,” says Katie. “We’re really pleased with the turnout, the weather was great, the soup was delicious and people got involved with the games and just had fun. “The community really came together and connected which is always great to see, it’s why we do it.”

Last week they had four new businesses sign up and Simon says they are also working on some behind the scenes software development to make the service even better. Kindergarten seeking tales of its past, Tuesday, 31 May: Since the article was published in the Nelson Weekly, Rutherford Street Kindergarten senior teacher Mary Davies says they have had some interesting information come forward. Toy Library mums to get messy

Kate Russell

A group of mums from the Nelson Community Toy Library are encouraging parents of toddlers and preschoolers to get back to basics, by hosting a ‘DIY play’ workshop next week. The hands-on workshop will be held at the Victory Community Centre on June 22nd, where mums, dads and even grandparents can learn all about simple homemade play ideas on a shoestring.

Messy play ideas, including play-dough, goop and slime will be on offer, as well as examples of easy home-made toys. Special guest speaker Brenda Holdaway from the Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association will also be there to talk about the ‘importance of play.’ Toy library president Eva Kerer, says they want to show people that play doesn’t have to be expensive or electronic, and most importantly – it doesn’t have to be hard. “We want to show people how easy it is to

make low-cost things, just by using things you can find in your kitchen cupboards such as flour, oil and salt” she says. “And, if you don’t have them, they are cheaply available from the supermarket.” She says that just by mixing soap flakes and water will give you a glorious ‘slime’, which is perfect for simple sensory play, and a drop or two of food colouring will go a long way. “Some of it is scientific almost, which kids really enjoy,” she says.

“It’s also about empowering parents that they can do it, and we will be using tried and tested recipes, and parents will get to take everything home that they make,” she says. The DIY Play - hands on workshop will be held on June 22nd from 7:30 - 9pm at the Victory Community Centre. Tickets are $15 (limited to 20 spaces) and are available at the toy library, 50a Grove St during opening hours, or email nelsoncommunitytoylibrary@gmail.com.

Nelson is beautiful whatever the season, so this winter, make sure you get out and enjoy everything the city has to offer with the help of Uniquely Nelson. Feast for the Senses will be running this July and August, giving locals the chance to get out of the house and experience a huge selection of tastes, colourful arts, beautiful music and of course, quality time with friends and family. "This year’s festival will be bigger and better than ever and, as part of Feast for the Senses, Nelson will once again be hosting a collection of Moveable Feasts offering some unmissable dining options two nights of the week," says Uniquely Nelson’s manager Simon Duffy. Every Wednesday and Thursday in July, through to mid August, people can purchase tickets to a themed Moveable Feast, a three course progressive dinner at three different restaurants. These proved incredibly popular last year and are sure to sell fast again this year with feasts including Contemporary Kiwi, Hot and Spicy, Seafood and Indulge, Can Hardy Wait, Asian Express and Feasty Favourites. Uniquely Nelson says the Feast for the Senses festival was created in order to bring people into the heart of Nelson City during what is a quieter time of the year, although even without this celebration of winter in Nelson, the city has more than 50 restaurants offering cuisines from every continent, some awesome bars with boutique wines and craft beers and a café culture that takes coffee to a fine art to entice you out of your winter blues. Feast for the Senses will also feature Illuminate, the creative illuminated collaborations between artists and retailers that will see Nelson’s retail windows take on a life of their own, and the Mid-Winter Masquerade Night Market, held in Morrison Square on July 28. You could even win the chance to take an extended break from winter as Feast for the Senses will also be offering an escape for two to Fiji, thanks to Helloworld Nelson. NelsoN Rugby Football Club Nelson’s Tasman Trophy triumph can be attributed to club unity, according to coach, Kade Heke. Both the senior A and B squads train together to form one big squad which trains together each week and he believes it was a key factor in their 1815 final victory over Wanderers. “I can say, hand on heart, that we would not have won without the ef-

forts of every player in our senior squad and the support from the club and our supporters who have been with us through thick and thin over the past couple of seasons.” “Injuries played a major factor in the early round efforts of Nelson in the Tasman Trophy. The team drew 10-10 with Renwick at Trafalgar Park and were thumped

Kade says a win over 2014 champions Waitohi, when his team was down to 14 men, proved the catalyst for the title run. “I think that was the turning

point, to get a result in Blenheim like that proved to the guys that we had the ability to challenge the top teams.” Kade says having experience in key positions proved vital. “Having a guy like Goody (Andrew Goodman) to steer us around the park is clearly a luxury and he’s done a terrific job this season. “Then you have experienced guys like Shane Grieve and Craig Moore coming off the bench, it puts you in a fantastic

2016 NPD TasmaN TroPhy remainder of the Nelson Bays competition, he believed his team was capable of adding to its trophy haul. “Maybe we’ve gone under the radar a bit so far this season but I know we have the team capable of handling the pressure. Nelson made a habit of winning a majority of their games by narrow margins during the Tasman Trophy and the coach believed it helped the team at crucial times during the final. “The guys had been down in close games all season, so the self belief was there. “Take nothing away from Wanderers, it was two good teams going at each other and it could have gone either way. “To win the Tasman Trophy means a lot to the club and hopefully we can continue to build on it.”

Nelson Division 2 player Bill Havilli takes on the Stoke Defence.

The success of the division one team has a flow on effect to the division two players, according to captain Daniel Macdonald. The Nelson B’s are coming off a confidence boosting 16-15 away win over Stoke, thanks to a penalty goal in the latter stages from Blair Roach. “That was a big win for us,” Daniel says. “To be as flat as we were all game and still come up with the win was extremely satisfying.” Daniel saying knowing some of his players helped out when injuries hit the A team earlier in the season made the Tasman Trophy a sweet success for both teams. “Both teams train as one senior squad so, while we weren’t out there playing, it felt Andrew Goodman, veteran of over like we were part of 100 games in the Blue of Nelson, takes it, too.” on the Wanderers defence in the NPD “We had guys who Tasman Trophy final. stepped up when in-

juries hit so the Tasman Trophy win felt good. Daniel says his team would continue to fight for a top four spot but would need to keep winning and earn four-try bonus points to do so. He says fitness would be a key in the later rounds, especially if they wanted to move up the table. “We have guys with a lot of talent across the park, but in the division two competition you can win and lose games purely on your fitness. “I know we lost to Takaka earlier in the season because we got tired and they scored late.” Daniel says, with strengths in the loose forwards, he was hopeful the pack could give the speedy outside backs a chance to chase the four-try bonus points they needed. “We tried to play the expansive style of game against Stoke but it didn’t really work. “We’ve got good players all over the field; it’s just a case of creating opportunities for tries.”

Big three flex muscles in club rugby comp Jacob Page

Marist, Wanderers and Nelson all flexed their muscles away from home, with comfortable victories in Nelson Bays division one rugby competition on Saturday. Whakatu Hotel Marist kept an under-strength Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys scoreless at Jubilee Park, winning 48-0. Galbraith Nelson maintained their momentum by downing Freeman Roofing Stoke 4711. Taylors Wanderers eased past Kahurangi 40-22. Waimea Old Boys were missing key players across the park, especially in the backline, and Marist winger Adam Dunn took full advantage to score three times. Usual Marist No 10 James Hawkey proved an effective distributor from the midfield for Marist and Dunn was ruthlessly efficient when he

was given any space. Kahurangi put in a strong first half effort to be right in the contest with Wanderers at the break. The hosts trailed just 18-15, but with Wanderers starting frontline players on the bench after their Tasman Trophy final defeat to Nelson, they overpowered them in the second half. Similarly, Nelson only led Stoke 14-6 at the main break of their game before Nelson powered away in the second half. Seven Nelson players scored tries in the rout. In the division two games, a late penalty to Blair Roach gave Nelson a 16-15 win over Stoke, Waimea Old Boys held on to beat a fast-finishing Marist 27-17. Collingwood cruised past Tapawera/Murchison 46-0. Huia scored a comfortable 46-19 win over Wanderers and Riwaka downed Takaka 29-3.

Winter road racing series starts in Hope

Garin centre Hannah Stevenson looks to get the ball to her shooters against Marist Black in their Nelson Netball senior 1 game at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. Photo: Jacob Page

The Ray White Richmond Winter Series started last Saturday when a record 76 riders raced around the Hope circuit near Richmond. Mikey McCallum won the 41km A grade race in 1hr 9min 47sec, just edging out Ethan Batt in a sprint finish with super-veteran Chris Nicholson

33 seconds back in third. Under-17 rider Keegan Hornblow won the B grade race in 1hr 9min 36sec with Josh Ryan in second and Georgia Catterick, the first female rider, in third. Another promising young female rider Shaane Fulton prevailed in C grade, heading off Kaio Lart and Owen Hoggard

in a sprint. Peter Lawless won D grade. The next race in the 11-race Ray White Richmond Winter series starts at the Brightwater Saleyards and heads to Wakefield, Wai-iti and Eighty-eight Valley. Registration for Saturday's race is from 12.45pm with a 1.30pm start.

Marist defence too strong for Garin Jacob Page Marist Black held Garin A to just seven goals in each half to prevail 29-14 in their senior 1 netball game at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. The opening quarter saw both teams looking rusty. The only consistent element of the first 10 minutes was turnovers. Both teams struggled to bring the ball through the court with Marist earning a 6-4 lead in a forgettable opening for both teams. Marist extended their advantage with the first two goals of the second quarter and their defence continued to create turnovers and held-ball situations. The problem was, Marist turned over a lot of ball in the attacking third which prevented them from extending their lead quicker. Marist goal shoot Celeste Dempster

proved accurate enough to keep her team in front, but both Garin and Marist were guilty of rushing passes. Despite it all, Garin remained in touch. Garin goal defence Georgia Clarkson had a strong second quarter but late shots from Dempster ensured Marist led 12-7 at halftime. Marist wing defence Kate McCaskin won some crucial ball for her team in the third quarter as goals continued to be at a premium for Garin, who had to rely on their extra height in the shooting circle to gain offensive rebounds. The Marist shooters found their rhythm in the third quarter and extended the margin to 20-8 at one point. Garin hit double figures late to cut the margin to 10 heading into the final quarter. Marist tried to play up tempo in the final quarter and with victory assured they edged to the final whistle.

Wakefield make Richmond wonder Jacob Page Wakefield have provided the ultimate wakeup call for Nelson Bays division one leaders, Richmond Athletic, after the cellar-dwellers earned a 1-1 draw at Jubilee Park on Saturday. Ian Radcliffe’s penalty inside the first five minutes allowed Wakefield to get their tails up. It was momentum they carried right through the 90 minutes, even when Nat Payn was able to lop a speculative shot over the keeper and just under the bar midway through the second half to level the scores. Despite having the bulk of the possession against a tiring Wakefield defence that was losing its shape, Fresh Choice Richmond could not find a winner and as a result had

having lost to FC Nelson the previous week, then looking great in the Chatham Cup before drawing on Saturday. “We had such a good start to the season that

maybe the guys are just starting to come back down.” Matt says, having a Chatham Cup third round game on June 25 may be splitting the players’ focus, but they have to show more energy out in the park. The biggest benefactors were Suburbs Seals who beat FC Nelson 3-1. Goals to Hadleigh Coffey and Davi Marciel kept them in front, but it was a top corner screamer from player/ coach Brendan Hodgson that sealed the deal. The result means the Seals are equal on points with Richmond, but Richmond have a game in hand. The Marlborough Mariners kept themselves in the hunt with a 3-1 win over Nelson College. Nelson Suburbs and Tahuna drew 1-1.

Ideal Arden broke through the $100,000 career earnings barrier by winning the Nelson Pine Industries Nelson Winter Cup on Sunday. Photo: Jacob Page.

100th time a charm for Ideal Arden Jacob Page Ideal Arden created his own slice of history in winning the Nelson Pine Industries Nelson Winter Cup at Richmond Racecourse on Sunday. The six year-old’s 100th start saw him earn the biggest win of what has been a gritty career, and also allowed him to break through the $100,000 career earnings barrier. While collecting the trophy, trainer Bruce Hutton mentioned it had always been his ambition to earn six figures with the horse. Ideal Arden won on both days of the two-day Nelson meeting at his first look at the track. In slushy conditions, driver Gavin Smith took him to the front of the field and asked the more-favoured runners to chase him down. Highview Freddy, Joey Macguire and race favourite Fifth Edition all

got close on the line, but Ideal Arden was not to be denied. The win gave Gavin Smith a first in his long career, with Sunday being the first time the reinsman had driven four winners in one day. He said post-race, with conditions deteriorating he wanted to be near the front. “Conditions meant we had to go forward and see how the race panned out from there, but (Ideal Arden) fought on well.” One of the more popular winners of the day was Compliant. Two of its owners are Richmond's Gus Cuthbertson and Russell Aitkenhead. He also led most of the way and held off all challengers down to the winning post. The Nelson Racing Club’s punters club was also a success on the day, giving each of its members $37 back for the initial $10 investment.
