Life membership awarded The Nelson Grey Power AGM saw a well deserved life membership awarded to Richmond’s Murray Fisher who after volunteering in the Grey Power office for more than 20 years has well and truly earned this recognition. Since joining the Nelson Grey Power office as a volunteer in 1993, Murray has worked in four different offices, moving with the or-
ganisation across town before it recently settled in to its new home at 33 Putaitai Street. Pat Carrick, who nominated Murray for a life membership at the recent AGM described him as a man with a quiet manner “who has contributed immensely to the culture at Nelson Grey Power. His presence in the office has been valued Continued page 8

Steady as she goes Neville Male President The pathway ahead is now on a much firmer footing since speaking to you in my March presidents report and it is pleasing to now say that as we continue to raise our profile this is resulting in us being asked to take a role in a number of important community organizations. Now that we have moved into our new office in Stoke, things are starting to settle down as members become more familiar with the new surroundings. It has been an extremely busy time for staff settling into the new environment and for our office volunteers who have played a key supporting role as the change has taken place. My thanks are extended to all who have helped make this happen. It is very pleasing to report that we have had many new members and returning members sign up over the past four months. It does
remain as a great concern to me that there are still many members who have not renewed their membership for 2013/14. As I have previously said we want to achieve 10,000 members which will really help to make an impact as we negotiate for better deals for our members both at the political and commercial levels. So if you haven’t renewed then please do so as soon as possible and if you know anyone who is over 50 years of age who is not already a member then please urge them to join. They won’t regret it! You will have read in the local press about our concerns regarding increasing rates and costs of operating for both the Nelson City and Tasman District Council. We have made annual plan submissions to both Councils imploring them to keep rates in check and to

live within their means. We have strongly urged both Councils to reconsider the major cost items in their budgets and have asked that they adopt a simple stance of making decisions on the basis of is it desirable or essential? We as an organisation are not against progress but Councils cannot continue to rack up millions of dollars of debt which will eventually fall back on the ratepayers. As president I have been appointed as a trustee of the Kiwi Energy Trust and you will read more about it in this newsletter. The NZ Grey Power Federation is presently negotiating with two electricity supply companies to do a deal for all Grey Power members throughout New Zealand and an announcement is due in a matter of weeks. If this deal does not eventuate then all of the Grey Power
Associations have, through a remit I presented and had accepted by the conference, been invited to join the Kiwi Energy Trust which is prepared to open its doors to any consumer anywhere in New Zealand, regardless of age, who wants cheaper power. We will keep you informed of progress on this important issue. I attended the NZ Grey Power Federation Conference over three days in Auckland and heard from a variety of people speaking on retirement villages, Pharmac and advocacy. Reports were tabled about progress being made by the Federations National Advisory Groups on health, ACC, energy, local bodies, housing, retirement villages, superannuation and taxation. A remit I proposed suggesting a working relationship with the NZ Public Health Organization (PHO) Alliance was accepted and now paves the way for better access

Grey Power Nelson to health decision makers for all Grey Power Associations. Quite rightly concern was expressed about how important it was to be successful in advocacy when dealing with politicians on all of these matters and we will likely see much improvement in this regard in the future. It was made very clear to the incoming federation board that membership will decline - 62,000 currently - unless good results are forthcoming over the next 12 months. Specific details about the conference will be published in the next Federation magazine. For those of you that would like to see dry wood being allowed to be used in open fires in homes during winter I will be continuing to
News make representations to councils on your behalf. Many members have already contacted me about this issue. It is not right that Clean Air Standards have been set using scientific data that simply does not stack up as far as dry wood is concerned. Finally can I ask that you to please support our discount book suppliers and our other sponsors. They make it possible for you to get the best deals on a wide variety of products and we don’t want to lose them. We are already being approached by new suppliers wanting to become part of our discount scheme. In the meantime I hope that the coming winter will not be too uncomfortable for you and you keep warm.
Why we need your email address
Over the past six months Grey Power Nelson has been compiling a data base of email addresses for our members so that we can communicate on a more regular basis with everyone. It has been a big exercise and we now have about 65% of our members email addresses. The new weekly email “News Flash” will contain current and important information as well as any special deals or promotions that we think you should be made aware of.
It will not contain spam or any material that you don’t need to see and you can be assured that your email address will be kept totally confidential. If you haven’t already supplied us with an email address please do so by ringing the office on 03 547 2457. If you do not have an email address we will of course continue to communicate with you through our quarterly magazine, the next of which comes out at the beginning of September.

Gradual loss of hearing is one of the impediments of ageing but one which can be easily rectified by the right hearing professional. Since a hearing aid cannot be prescribed like eye glasses, proper hearing aid recommendation and fitting is highly dependent on the judgment and skill of the professional fitting the instruments -choosing a hearing professional is one of the most important decisions a hearing impaired person can make.

Membership survey progress report President Neville Male outside the new office. The new Nelson Grey Power office is officially open for business after the team celebrated with an official opening last month. We are now proud to offer Nelson’s 9600 members a new base in a spacious office in the heart of Stoke. The new office is situated at 33 Putaitai St, between Kiwibank and the walkway to the Stoke Library – opposite the Countdown Supermarket carpark- and the move has been a welcome change
for the organisation after out growing the smaller premises. The team can now offer a better service to members, with more space to sit down and have a chat and tea and coffee available free of charge. All feedback on the new office to date has been fantastic with both members and staff noticing quite a difference, so if you haven’t already done so, call in for a visit and check out the new space – its warm too.
To date Grey Power Nelson have had nearly 800 responses to the survey conducted in the last magazine and we are now in the process of analysing the results. If you haven’t yet filled in
the survey which was in the back of the March newsletter then it is not too late to do so. If you haven’t got a copy of the survey questionnaire you can get a copy from the Grey Power office in Putaitai Street, Stoke.
OFFICE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Now that Grey Power has moved into a new office there is a need to find more volunteers who would be happy to work on a roster during office opening hours. The work involved is of a basic clerical nature and it is preferable if you have had some previous office experience.

New members for your committee We were very pleased to see an excellent turn out of our financial members at our recent AGM. The guest speaker was Chris Fleming the new CEO of the Nelson District Health Board who gave an enlightening address on the difficulties boards are having in meeting the health needs of the community and how the board might face these challenges in the future. He saw Nelson Grey Power as an important link to the community and would welcome regular dialogue on issues facing our older population. Our president outlined
Gaile Noonan his vision for the future and the progress being made with key goals and objectives since his five months in office. Mr Male also talked about the importance of developing an all embracing strategy for addressing the future challenges that our older population will face. Two new executive committee
Bob Hancock members were appointed: Gaile Noonan and Bob Hancock. Both of these appointees bring a vast array of experience to the executive committee, which will benefit from their knowledge. George Truman and Win Cozens did not stand for re-election to the committee and sincere thanks is
extended to them both for their past time and commitment to Nelson Grey Power affairs. One resolution was passed at the AGM that will increase the single membership subscription to $20 as from the 2014-2015 renewal year. The double will remain at $25. The Nelson Mail office Is now taking membership payments and has our forms at reception 15 Bridge Street, Nelson Just ask at the counter. Thank you to the Nelson Mail for making this possible.

Are you sick of telemarketers and pushy salesmen endless harassing you at all hours, to put in a heat recovery system? Dont be fooled, flashy adds and celebrity spokesman doesn’t mean you are getting the best for your dollar, in fact you could be spending thousands more than you have to. Breaking the Myth, what is a heat recover system? Positive Pressure ventilation systems draw fresher, drier air into your home from either the roof cavity or outside. This air is then passed through a high efficiency filter and introduced into your home. This introduced air forces out the moist, stale air that causes condensation, mould and mildew. This dryer air makes is then easier to heat, making your existing heating more efficient. There are a range of options when choosing a system, from basic to elaborate systems that include heat transfer systems or even intergrated heat pumps. This winter why not talk to Rowan Dron Electrical first. Rowan and the team have been installing positive ventilation systems for years and will give you straight up, honest advice about what will suit your house best. Its free and he might just save you from being left out in the cold this winter.

An end to urban sprawl Feedback from the Tasman District Council’s urban density survey has shown most local residents think higher density housing is long over due. Public feedback has shown most people are keen to see an end to urban sprawl in favour of higher density development and that the TDC should be commended for welcoming public input with participants saying they though the idea was “practical, sensible and economical.”
Throughout the responses places that were popularly earmarked as suitable places for development were the areas from Queen St to Darcy St, Croucher St to Salisbury Rd, Hill St and Wensley Rd, with preference given to areas close to the CBD to cater to elderly and those with disabilities, a stance that is welcomed by Nelson Grey Power president Neville Male. Neville says that any development would need to be close to town to enable
easy access to essential services to older residents. “We would want to see access to transport, shops and the doctor close by to any planned development so that elderly residents are not isolated.” Although he was supportive of the council planning for the future and looking at higher density housing, Neville says it will come down to affordability. “We would be supportive of high density housing providing it was afford-
able and within reach of the older person in Nelson. Our view is that we want to see older people staying in there own home for as long as possible. We already have elderly people forced out of their homes selling their homes to gain capital as they struggle to meet the costs of day to day living.” Throughout the feedback given by the public there was a high demand for cluster or compact style townhouses that are “well designed”, “eco friendly” “warm and comfortable.”

Winter car maintenance The recent survey conducted in the Grey Power magazine showed that 94% of members drive a motor vehicle and with that in mind, Eric Davy, our transport spokesperson, thought it was timely with winter fast approaching to give out a few reminders. “It takes more power to start a cold motor and winter can be especially hard on your battery. You will use more electric power with windscreen wiper, lights and heaters so you need to make sure your battery is in good condition. Now is the time to check your tyres for tread depth and inflation and make sure your WOF is current and your cars servicing is up to date. This will give you some

comfort that all your liquid levels are correct.” “If you don’t have a garage to park your vehicle in then before driving off I suggest you go outside, start your car and then go back inside for a few minutes to give your car a chance to warm up. This will make it less likely to stall because it is cold and will enable you to use your demisters to get your windows clean. “When driving allow a bit more time for your journey and also increase your following distance so that if you have to stop you can do so in plenty of time. The road may be wet or if it is shady could be icy, especially on frosty mornings. Enjoy your winter driving and do so safely.”

MAKING IT HAPPEN & MOVING NELSONMAKING FORWARDIT HA “Aldo has the question of what is best for Nelson at heart and as such I’d stand by him to the hilt. His leadership qualities, business experience and honesty in my opinion make him the only one for the job, and for at least the next couple of terms at that.” Councillor Jeff Rackley
“I believe that to have three different Mayors in three consecutive terms would not be in the best interests of Nelson. Aldo has the best of intentions for the City and has worked hard for all sectors of the Community. He is positive, energetic and receptive to considering new initiatives and ways of working; attributes which I believe are essential given the unsettled economic landscape and changes to the Local Government environment.” Deputy Mayor Ali Boswijk

Early television in Nelson
Nelsonians would have gone without TV until the early 70s if it weren’t for two experimenting radio technicians who just couldn’t let the idea of TV go. Several years before the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation provided a regional TV service to Nelson, a private television translator was built and set up by Nelson locals John Ross and Errol Neal. In the early days of TV in New Zealand, when it was years away from arriving in Nelson, John and Errol, radio technicians by trade, stepped up their efforts in the search for good TV reception, experimenting all over Nelson. John, 92, who now lives in Richmond, says they were always on the lookout for a clearer picture, after picking up relatively weak signals here and there. “Between January and April 1962, we
hit upon the fact that channel 1 Wellington could be received in narrowly defined spots in town. We were constantly on alert for the slightest indication of possible reception able to provide TV to an area of Nelson on a much wider scale.” After finding a good spot of usable field strength atop Princes Dr, a signal which originated from Wellington, John and Errol set their sights on providing TV reception to the people of Nelson. The men kept news of their successes under wraps, because at the time they weren’t authorised to provide a signal to the public. “As there was absolutely no television in Nelson, this was the time to use discretion. If we made it public that we could receive a signal from Wellington, it could have led people to believe that it was possible everywhere. We

Grey Power Nelson carriage from site to site.” As their determination grew so did their support. The Nelson TV Viewers Society was formed and John and Errol were officially granted permission by the NZBC to continue their work, with the corporation lifting all bans on private translators. The result meant that for the short term, John and Errol were able to meet the demand of viewers. While the picture was snowy, viewers enjoyed the rewards enthusiastically, while John and Errol themselves were thrilled to be able to continue their work. It was 1970 by the time the NZBC came to town, installing a high power transmitter on the Grampians and providing the community with a much clearer picture and demonstrating just how good the picture would be, a huge step forward for Nelson. While the arrival of the new transmitter meant John and Errol’s own translators were dismantled and switched off, Nelsonians had them to thank for recieving TV several years ahead of schedule.

A long history of service
Justices of the Peace have been around for over 800 years. It all began in 1195 when Archbishop Hubert, chief justice of England, appointed knights as ‘conservators of the peace.’ In 1361 King Edward III gave the officers a general power of trying a majority of felonies and later Henry VII empowered them as Justices of the Peace to try all offences except treason, murders and other felonies. In New Zealand in 1814, Governor McQuarie of New South Wales appointed missionary Thomas Kendall as a Justice of the Peace in the Bay of Islands, to deal with the increasing lawlessness in the young colony. The first direct appointments were made after New Zealand became a separate colony in 1840. Since this time, all JPs [Jus-
tices of the Peace] have been expected to maintain a high standard of personal behaviour and have good standing in their community. Over the years the role has changed, yet JPs in New Zealand still perform their various functions free of charge, believing it’s both a duty and an honour to serve their community. All are authorised to witness signatures on documents, certify copies, take oaths, declarations, affidavits and affirmations. As well as their ministerial duties, around 400 JPs have completed extra studies, enabling them to sit in court to deal with minor offences like traffic

infringements, disorderly behaviour, breaches of liquor bans, remands and bail applications. No payment is received for these regular duties. Contrary to popular belief, New Zealand JP’s aren’t licenced to perform marriages. Interestingly, Judicial JPs take the same oath as all New Zealand Judges which is to “do right to all manner of people after the laws and usages of New Zealand, without fear of favour, affection or will.” The JP motto, ‘Let justice be done though the heavens may fall’ underpins this free service which is available to all. Nationwide more than 11,000 JPs are drawn
from a wide cross-section of the community, with equal numbers of men and women being appointed in recent times. Because it’s important everyone has easy access to their services, two Nelson Tasman JPs are available at the Richmond Mall and the Nelson Library between 10am and noon every Saturday. No appointments are needed and nearly 800 people have used this service since it started last September. To find a JP near you, look in the Yellow Pages, visit www.jpfed.org.nz, or contact Citizens Advice Bureau Nelson Tasman 03 5482117. If visiting a JP at home or work, it’s courteous to make an appointment, remember to take originals as well as the copies, and don’t sign any documents before you meet.

New Zealand support the annual appeal by taking donation boxes and making additional donations as they feel. Glaucoma NZ encourage people to have their eyes examined because early detection of the disease is key to maintaining sight, as any vision lost from glaucoma cannot be regained. If you wish to be involved in the appeal or want to make a donation please contact Glaucoma NZ on 0800 452 826.
The next seminar hosted by staff from the Air New Zealand Holiday Shop in Trafalgar Street Nelson will be held in the meeting room at the Nelson Grey Power office between 10am and 11.30am on Wednesday June 26. Air New Zealand Holiday Shop is a major sponsor of Nelson Grey Power and will be offering some exciting travel opportunities to those attending. Morning tea will be served to attendees so come along and hear about what could be your next overseas trip. Please ring Kim at the office on 547 2457 to register by Monday June 24.
The Glaucoma NZ annual awareness appeal month is coming up in July and the purpose is to raise awareness of glaucoma, the risks, the importance of early detection, ongoing management and treatment of the disease. Previous appeals have been hugely successful and organisers hope this year their efforts will raise vital funds to enable Glaucoma NZ to continue to extend its free nationwide educa-
tion and research initiatives. Glaucoma is the leading cause of preventable blindness in New Zealand and it’s estimated that approximately 68,000 New Zealanders over the age of 40 currently have it. Sadly 50% of the people with glaucoma don’t even realise they have it. Ophthalmologists, optometrists, pharmacies, ASB Banks and various private individuals and businesses throughout

Something to think about One evening a grandson was talking to his grandmother about current events. The grandson asked his grandmother what she thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age and just things in general. The grandmother replied, “Well, let me think for a minute, I was born before television, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, contact lenses, frisbees and the pill. There were no credit cards, laser beams or ball-point pens and man had not yet invented pantyhose, air conditioners, dishwashers or clothes dryers. Clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and man hadn’t yet walked on the moon.” “Your grandfather and I got married first and then lived together. Every family had a father and a mother. Until I was 25, I called every man older than me, “sir”
and even after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, “sir.” It was a time before gay rights, computer dating, dual careers, day care centres and group therapy. Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense. We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions. Serving your country was a privilege, living in this country was a bigger privilege and we thought fast food was what people ate during Lent. Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins and draft dodgers were those who closed front doors as the evening breeze started. Time sharing meant time the family spent
together in the evenings and weekends -not purchasing condominiums. We had never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings. We listened to big bands, Jack Benny, and the president’s speeches on our radios. I don’t ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey. If you saw anything with ‘Made in Japan’ on it, it was junk. The term ‘making out’ referred to how you did on your school exam. Pizza Hut, McDonalds, and instant coffee were unheard of. We had 5 and 10 cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents. Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a street car, and a Pepsi were all a nickel and if you didn’t want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to
mail one letter and two postcards. You could buy a new Ford Coupe for $600, but who could afford one? Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon. In my day grass was mowed, coke was a cold drink, pot was something your mother cooked in and rock music was your grandmother’s lullaby. Aids were helpers in the principal’s office. Chip meant a piece of wood, hardware was found in a hardware store and software wasn’t even a word. We were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder people call us old and confused and say there is a generation gap. How old do you think this grandmother is? I bet you have an old lady in mind. You are in for a shock. This woman is only 59 years old, born in 1952.

Use it or lose it Just in case you didn’t know, NBus is the new Nelson City Council bus service. If you haven’t been on them, you should. The new service between Nelson and Richmond is a huge improvement over the old SBL service. The old local inner Nelson bus service previously called “the bus” is now part of Nbus with some route changes and better connections to the Richmond Nbus. There are two routes, each takes the same time. One route via Tahuna, the other via Bishopdale, both taking the same time to get between Nelson and Richmond. Every second bus goes via Tahuna. The new buses are low floor, “kneeling” type buses that can lower their front entrance down when they stop so the step up to the bus is not too high. They

can even take wheelchair passengers using a fold out wheelchair ramp. The new buses are relatively fuel efficient buses and even have bike racks so you can bus your bike into town and use your bike to scoot around town and then bus back. Alternatively you could bike one way and bus back. Buses leave every 15mins at peak times and every 30mins at off-peak times, with the Tahuna route alternating with the Bishopdale route. Terminus points are SBL depot on Bridge St and Sundial Square in Richmond. Hours are 7am till 7pm with peak time buses every 15 minutes and off peak on half hour. This means that unlike with the old SBL

What is age anyway? As I’ve aged, I’ve become kinder to myself, and less critical of myself. I’ve become my own friend. I have seen too many dear friends leave this world, too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging. Whose business is it, if I choose to read, or play, on the computer, until 4am, or sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 50, 60 and 70s and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love, I will. I will walk the beach, in a
swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set. They, too, will get old. I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And I eventually remember the important things. Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break, when you lose a loved one, when a child suffers, or even when somebody’s beloved pet
gets hit by a car? But, broken hearts are what give us strength, understanding and compassion. A heart never broken, is pristine, sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect. I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning grey and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed and so many have died before their hair could turn silver. As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You

SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES Question 5 of our membership survey was “do you have a working smoke alarm”? We are pleased to report that 95% of those who responded said “YES”!, however we are very disturbed to see 5% said “NO”. The Fire Service recommends you have a number of smoke alarms in your home, in fact their brochure on alarms reads as follows: “For the best smoke detection, long life photoelectric
smoke alarms should be installed on the ceiling in every bedroom, living area and hallway in the house – on every level. However, we appreciate that this is not always practical. That’s why we recommend at an absolute minimum, a long-life photoelectric smoke alarm be installed in the hallway closest to the bedrooms. This should be supplemented with other alarms as soon as circumstances permit.”
Photoelectric smoke alarms are a bit more expensive than the standard alarms but the benefits are significant: They provide a minimum of 10 years smoke detection. They do not have batteries – which means the alarm pays for itself over its lifetime. And not having to remember to replace batteries every 6 months or so, and ending up with the flat battery “beep”” beep” sound waking you at 2am in the

Marsden House presents
‘Snippets of History’ CHURCH HILL Nelson’s first church service in 1841 was held in a tent on what was to become Church Hill. At that time the hill also housed the Post Office, the courthouse, a hospital tent, and the New Zealand Company’s barracks and storerooms. Following the Wairau Massacre in 1843, the hill was hastily fortified and named Fort Arthur, in honour of Captain Wakefield who died at the Wairau.

Hope and Practical Support Alzheimer’s Nelson is a non profit organisation based at 50 Halifax Street in Nelson, but they also visit people in their homes with information on what supports are available too. In the Nelson/Tasman area there are three field workers with a wealth of knowledge and experience. ryone will know someone whose life has been affected or touched by it. If you are concerned about yourself or someone you care about it is important that you discuss your concerns with your GP and make contact with Alzheimer’s Nelson. Dementia can only be diagnosed by ruling out other possible causes of the symptoms, which is why a full medical assessment is important. Although there is no cure for most causes of dementia the good news is that there is support available for you and your family to help overcome the stigma and isolation that is often associated with the dis-
ease. An early diagnosis can make it easier for you to access practical supports that really help. An early diagnosis can also help you plan for the future. The field workers at Alzheimer’s Nelson have the knowledge of what support and services are available and can help you access them. They provide resources and information including a library, support groups for carers and families and for people with dementia, educational talks, carer education programmes and activity/ day programmes. Talk to your GP if you recognise the following common symptoms in
yourself or someone you care about. • Gradual memory loss • Repeating statements or questions • Difficulty performing familiar tasks • Difficulty handling money • Loss of initiative • Impaired judgement • Disorientation of time and place • Personality changes • Changes in mood or behaviour • Problems with language • Deterioration in driving skills • Misplacing things For more information visit http://www.alzheimers. org.nz/nelson or call (03) 546-7702

Extra $35m for grandparents The government has allocated funding of $35 million over four years for extended family members caring for children, recognising the difficult job they do. Social development minister Paula Bennett says more than 12,000 New Zealand children are being cared for by wider family members because of the death of a parent or family breakdown. “We know they are do-
ing a tough job, often on limited incomes with children who need extra attention and help, and we’re determined to support that. Without these carers, more children would need to be in state care” said Mrs Bennett. As part of the White Paper on Vulnerable Children, Mrs Bennett signalled additional financial help would be made available for carers receiving the unsupported child benefit

Pumpkin Pasta Bake Pumpkin, it’s a super food. Pumpkins are loaded with vitamins, nutrients and beta-carotene 1 tsp oil 1 onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, crushed 100g lean bacon or salami 1 red capsicum, diced 1 pinch chilli flakes (optional) 3 cups diced pumpkin 2 cups chicken stock
which is important for healthy eyes, lungs, heart function and circulation. 400g can lite evaporated milk 300g macaroni or other pasta ¾ cup grated cheese Salt and pepper 1 cup fresh breadcrumbs (optional) Extra cheese for topping
1 sprig of rosemary / or ½ tsp dried Instructions Heat the oil in a large ovenproof frying pan. Add onion, garlic, bacon, capsicum and chilli flakes and gently fry until soft. Add pumpkin and half the chicken stock, cover and simmer gently
until the pumpkin begins to soften. Crush it a little with a fork and then add the remaining stock, the dried pasta and lite evaporated milk. Stir well, then add the rosemary. Simmer gently until the pasta is tender and
the liquid is absorbed (if the liquid is evaporating too quickly, cover the pan while simmering.) Remove the rosemary sprig and stir in grated cheese. Season to taste then smooth the top over. Sprinkle on the
breadcrumbs, a little extra grated cheese and brown under a heated grill until golden and bubbling. The last few steps can be missed out as this is still very nice without the grilled topping.

Including all people CCS Disability Action is an organisation that supports people of all ages across the diverse cultures and disabilities within New Zealand. With a regional structure with 16 local offices, they provide disability support to over 4000 disabled people and their families each year and also run the Mobility Parking scheme which supports over 97,000 people to more easily access their local towns and facilities. CCS Disability Action measures their success by their ability to connect people who have
disabilities with a range of life opportunities that every New Zealander might reasonably expect including belonging in a family or whanau, learning, having friends and relationships, having choices about where to live, meaningful work and leisure opportunities, participating in the community and belonging culturally and spiritually in a way that has personal meaning. With an ageing population and Nelson being such a great place to retire, CCS Disability Action recognises that for
some people their support needs may change as they progress through their lives. The natural process of getting older means that for some people they experience disability for the first time. While getting older may mean a new chapter in your life, you may have more time and opportunity to do new or different things. Perhaps this could include assisting CCS Disability in their mission to provide support for all people living with disabilities, ensuring that everyone is included in the life of their family
and in their community. If you would like to find out more information on CCS Disability Action and how they might be able to support you, or how you might be able to help their members live a fuller and more inclusive life, please contact 03 548 4479. CCS Disability Action Nelson will be presenting a fortnightly radio show commencing Thursday June 27. Tune into Fresh FM on 104.80 at 11am to hear about the issues and events affecting disabled people in the community of Nelson.

What a grandmother is Written by an 8 year old
A grandmother is a lady who has no children of her own, So she likes other people’s little girls and boys. A grandfather is a man grandmother. He goes for walks with the boys and they talk about fishing and tractors. Grandmothers don’t have to do anything but be there. They are old, so they shouldn’t play hard or run. They should never say ‘hurry up.’
World’s most magic food Grown locally, NZ has the best blackcurrants in the world. The highest levels of anthocyanin and antioxidants of any cultivated berry. Simply put, it’s the most goodness for the least calories. One teaspoon a day increases oxygen in your blood and improves circulation, veins and capillaries open up, built up toxins including lactic acid are flushed. This
is a very special food and is now being used in the recovery process after an event by our top athletes it’s so good. You can use it as a simple ongoing part of your healthy living. Improve your immune system, feel mentally sharper and help your body to heal naturally. Try it for yourself. Sujon, available at all good health stores and seAdvt. lected retailers.
Usually they are fat, but not too fat to tie children’s shoes. They wear glasses and funny underwear and they can take their teeth and gums off. They don’t have to be smart, only answer questions like why dogs hate cats and why God isn’t married. They don’t talk baby talk like visitors. When they read to us they don’t skip bits, or mind if it is the same story over again. Everybody should have one, especially if you don’t have television because grandmothers are the only grownups who have the time.

Prescription card can save you $$$ In New Zealand, most of the cost of a subsidised medicine is paid for by the government. Some costs are paid by you as a co-payment charge of $5 per item which is normally charged for each prescription dispensed by the pharmacy. Once you and your family have collectively had 20 medicines dispensed, you will qualify for a prescription subsidy card and for the remaining year there are no further co-payment charges for funded prescriptions -
however, any part-charges for medicines will still apply. Any prescriptions dispensed to your immediate family which includes your partner and any dependent children living at your address, will count towards the 20 required to qualify for a Prescription Subsidy card. How do you get these savings? Ask your pharmacist if you and your immediate family qualify for a prescription subsidy card. You will need to provide the names and addresses
of all immediate family members. Ideally, encourage your family to use the same pharmacy if possible so that collecting the 20 co-payments together will be easier. If your immediate family don’t want to use the same pharmacy, collect their prescription receipts and then show them to the pharmacy you use the most. Once you have collected 20 co-payments, the pharmacy will automatically give you a prescription subsidy card. If you or your immediate fam-
ily use another pharmacy, show the card so you don’t get charged any more co-payments. A prescription subsidy year runs from February 1 to January 31. So on February 1 of each year, your co-payment count goes back to zero and the year begins again. Remember it takes 20 co-payment charges per year by your immediate family, before you start saving. Ask your pharmacist for more information about prescription subsidy cards.
