Websters given stay from deportation Steve and Gail Webster’s immigration lifeline arrived in an email and it triggered a day of good fortune that helped them “feel normal again”. Nelson Weekly reported on the Websters immigration fight last month. They were told they had to be out of the country by midnight on Friday May 20. Their immigration enforcement officer had been in touch, Steve had cleared out his desk at work and their daughter had been told by her school that they couldn’t continue to teach her after that date. But just 48 hours before that deadline, Steve

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz received an email at midnight on Wednesday saying they had been given a 12-month essential skills work visa, which gives them time to reapply for their business visa. Steve says the email was a “weight off our shoulders”. “The stress just left us and we were just drained. We’d had it hanging over us for so long it didn’t feel real. Until we got the passports it didn’t
feel real.” Less than 24 hours after the midnight email, the Websters’ daughter Becky passed her driving test, Steve sold two cars at his work, Bowater Toyota, and the flower business they own was buzzing. Steve says it was one of the best days he’s experienced. “It was such a great day. We went to the Honest Lawyer for dinner to celebrate and had a bottle of bubbly, my boss Tony Bowater also gave me a bottle of bubbly. It was just one of

A proposal to inject life into Nelson’s Church St has been given the thumbs up from Nelson City Council, and could see the street transform into a vibrant outdoor dining hub. Church St business owners and landowners have approached council with a view of working together to improve the inner city lane, which is home to Kush Coffee, East St Cafe and Nicola’s Cantina. Initial concept plans, which have been developed by Church St architect Tony Karston, feature outdoor dining areas bordered by planters, as well as paving, street light upgrades, bicycle parking and footpath widening. A vision for hanging sculpture that could be changed every few years with a sculpture competition, and a street festival, have also been proposed by the busi-

ness owners. Although construction isn’t likely until 2017/18, on-street dining could be trialled this summer, thanks to the council revoking restrictions so as to allow eateries to apply for licences to use public car parking spaces for outdoor dining in the CBD. Andy Budd, owner of Kush Coffee, says the idea has been “on their agenda” for a while. The popular coffee spot already has a small outdoor dining space, but Andy says he would like the street to become more “pedestrianfriendly”. “In Europe you see streets where half a dozen cafes work together, and you can order from any of them

with one outdoor area where people can sit and relax,” he says. “We think it would be a great addition to the city.” The concept proposes a more contemporary design aesthetic to that of Trafalgar St, using corten steel planters rather than Victorianstyled bollards and chains, to separate the outdoor dining from the roadway. Councillors at Thursday’s Works and Infrastructure Committee meeting unanimously agreed to move forward with the project, with committee chair, councillor Eric Davy saying he was “very keen” on the design. “I think it’s a great use of this area. those days.” The couple own Earthbloom Flowerstore and say they feel confident that a fresh application will pass the standards set by Immigration New Zealand. The 12-month visa gives them time to submit that application. “We plan to make ourselves so wonderful they won’t be able to turn us down,” says Steve. They say the support they received from Nelsonians after the initial article was of huge comfort for them. “We felt like cornered rats. It was panic, there was nowhere to go and we felt helpless,” says Steve. “But people have been fantastic, going out of their way to come in and talk to us, it’s been really lovely and it reinforces the reason we came here in the first place. It’s such a lovely place to live and we just want the opportunity to stay.” Gail says she even had strangers stop her on the street and in the supermarket to offer support. “It’s been really touching,” she says. Steve says the family has a spring in its step again. “We feel like the sun has come out for us. We’re moving house, it feels like a fresh start for us.”

said “it would be a really good thing for the city”. Uniquely Nelson is also behind the development, with manager Simon Duffy telling Nelson Weekly that they are “all for” improvements in Church St, but he would like to see signage in place which directed foot traffic from the Rutherford Hotel to Trafalgar St, as well. The council will move forward with stakeholder en-
gagement and design development in 2016/17 at a cost of $75,000, with the rough cost estimate of the entire upgrade estimated to be $400,000 to $500,000 which would be funded through the council’s CBD Enhancement programme. It has been proposed that Church St businesses would fund the planters and outdoor furniture for the project.

The pride and joy of the Marsden House Funeral Services fleet has been partially reduced to ash, following a fire that ripped through the vehicle workshop just before midnight last Tuesday. While alarms were set off by the flames and 28 fire fighters and a command unit responded quickly to the scene, funeral director Francis Day says it wasn’t quick enough to save the historic Plymouth Suburban that has been in the family since 1957. Francis says he can still remember when his dad brought home the historic hearse. “In those days it was not easy to get vehicles, you needed to import vehicles and there was quite a process, it was very hard to get any vehicle in, so to get a hearse like that was really something.” Francis says the Plymouth, which was imported from Canada, was the most valuable and sentimental piece affected by the fire. “My father was quite proud of it, we’ve had other hearses since but that

The 1958 Plymouth Suburban that was damaged in last week’s fire. was always the one we wanted to look after and retain. It’s very much a special part of the company and has been for years.” Francis says he was pretty upset when he found out it had been affected by the fire. “It is pretty damaged but we’ll be looking to repair it, it’s just a matter of whether we can get the parts we need.”

The fire was “out of the blue” for Francis, but it was a sad reminder of the fire that burnt down his family home 50 years ago. “There’s no winners in a fire, you always loose something special, all the bits you accumulate over the years from pieces of family history to even down to the practical stuff like nuts and bolts, anything you loose is hard and you just have to start again.” Fire inspector Craig Piner says the electrical fire that burned through the ceiling appears to have originated under the attached car port and is likely to have been sparked by a power socket.

Histrionics wins supreme award Locally Owned and Operated
ROLLER DERBY: They’re rough, they’re tough, they’re New Zealand’s ladies of Roller Derby and on Saturday they battled it out at Nelson Roller Skating Rink. While Nelson’s Sirens of Smash hosted the event, teams were made up of skaters from around the country and were split into two teams, those aged 40 and over and those under 40. Aptly named the Prime Cuts and the Spring Chickens, it was the younger team that took the victory 177129. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

A Nelson community group which aims to connect Nelsonians to their past has won the supreme award at the Nelson Tasman Community Awards last night. Histrionics took home the supreme award 2016 Trustpower Nelson Tasman Community Awards, which were held at the Rutherford Hotel. For winning the Supreme Award, Histrionics received a framed certificate, a trophy and $1500 prize money. Histrioncs now has the opportunity to represent the district at the 2016 Trustpower National Community Awards, which are being held Rotorua in March 2017. In total, Trustpower has given over $6000 to various community groups through last night’s Awards. Trustpower Community Relations Representative Emily Beaton says Histrionics work diligently to tell personal, local community stories to connect the present community to its forebears and to each other. “They make ‘living’ history accessible, easy to digest and educational through a school programme available to local schools, providing places for more than 400 pu-

Historic plaque brings back memories Locally Owned and Operated
Simon Bloomberg
A plaque will be unveiled at the Nelson Underwater Club headquarters in Nelson on Saturday as the final act in the tragic death of six Royal New Zealand Air Force fliers near Motueka in World War II. Members of the Nelson Underwater Club helped salvage some of the wreckage of the Hudson Bomber that crashed into the sea off Motueka on September 29, 1942. Flying officer Dean Horrocks, sergeants Vincent Hill, Jack Bryson, Victor Chapple and Gordon Stevens, and AC1 John Davies, died from hypothermia following the crash and the plaque with their names will be unveiled as part of the New Zealand Underwater Club’s annual general meeting in Nelson on Saturday. The plaque has been mounted at the base of a propeller that was salvaged from the bomber by some of the club’s divers in 1975. Although that was over 30 years ago, one of the club’s veteran divers, Ross McDonald, 86, says it seemed like yesterday. “The commercial fishermen got hold of us because it was right in the middle of a good trawling spot,” Ross says. “When we went

Insert: Members of the Nelson Underwater Club with some of the wreckage salvaged from the Hudson Bomber back in 1975. down it was covered in nets and rubbish and wires, and all sorts of stuff from trawlers. “The aircraft was upside down, and the starboard engine had come off and was in front of the plane. It was really murky - you could only see a couple of feet so it was quite eerie.” Ross says they placed the
salvaged engine in a fresh water spring near Lansdowne Rd for five years to flush out all the salt water before taking it to their clubrooms. It was mounted outside the clubroooms in 2006 when it was finally returned to the club by police after “being stolen, and brought and sold, two or three times.”
However, the salvage of the Hudson Bomber was just one of many historic dives Ross has been involved in during a life-time as a commercial diver. He was a member of salvage teams on the Mikhail Lermotov and Jody F Millennium, and worked on the Cook Strait Cable - he completed his last commercial salvage with
club member Colin Wilkin on a fishing boat in Port Nelson late last year. “I started hose-diving on the Arapuni Dam in 1948 and then worked in search and rescue when I joined the airforce in 1950. We started the Marlborough Underwater Club when I was based at Woodbourne in 1957 and then I helped start the Nelson Underwater Club when I moved over here in 1958. “One of our favourite dives back in the early days was the Pupu Springs. We’d drive right up to the spring and there’d be cows grazing all around the edge of the water.” Colin says Ross is a living legend who has dived all over the world. Ross was also the first diver to go into the Riwaka Resurgence, taking candles to light in Agee jars once he was in the caves, Ross says. “He’s dived with Kelly Tarlton and Wade Doak and all those guys, “ Colin says. “He’s a bit of a legend around here.” Ross says he is looking forward to Saturday’s plaque unveiling that will be attended by officials from the Royal New Zealand Air Force. The annual general meeting will also feature a function on Saturday night and a dive off Tonga Island on Sunday.
5 things you might not know about varicose veins Affiliated Provider to Southern Cross Health Society for Endovenous Laser Treatment & Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy
Winter is here and it’s the perfect time to get your varicose veins treated so you can wear shorts next summer!
Go from this...
1 2 3
Not all veins are created equal Varicose Veins and Spider Veins are not the same thing. Varicose veins are generally thick and blue, protruding from the legs, they occur when one-way valves don't work, blood begins to collect in the incompetent vein rather than continuing back toward your heart. Spider veins are smaller, thinner blood vessels, closer to the surface and visible under the skin. Not just for the girls Whilst pregnancy and menopause are factors in the formation of varicose veins, genetics is probably the main issue, so we treat lots of men who have varicose veins too. As an aside, it is definitely a myth that women should wait until they have completed their family to have veins treated; that just makes for an extremely uncomfortable next pregnancy; so treat them first. Varicose veins don't just affect seniors We treat plenty of clients in their twenties and thirties for varicose veins. Our age range to date is 17 to 94 years old!
To this...
4 5
Vanity is not always the name of the game There is a common misconception that the major reason for vein treatment is to look better. Whilst you will look great following treatment and be able to wear shorts again, veins are definitely not just a cosmetic problem. They can cause heavy, painful, tired legs, with associated cramps, skin discolouration, itch, and restlessness, and if left untreated can carry longer term health risks such as, dermatitis, ulcers and even deep vein thrombosis, (blood clots) especially with long distance travel. Walk on in... Walk on out In the past, invasive surgical stripping was the only way to treat the appearance and symptoms of varicose veins. This was (and is) expensive, requiring general anesthesia and hospitalisation, and more painful. At enhanceskin we offer Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS), the minimally invasive Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA), the current ‘gold standard’ treatment, as well as the brand new VenaSeal, a medical glue! All are walk in and walk out treatments, you can drive home afterwards, and are generally able to be at work the next day!

The trust had been canvassing consumers about changing its Trust Deed, but resolved to withdraw the proposal because it failed to get unanimous support from trustees. Terry Kreft, who is the industry-appointed trustee nominated by the three largest consumers, was not willing to support the change because he was concerned the move lacked transparency and could result in consumers paying more for their power. Chair of the Network Tasman Trust, Gwenny Davis, says she is "naturally disappointed" with this decision. "I believe it will leave the company in a difficult position in the years to come as it tries to maintain the value of a wiresand-poles network challenged by new technologies, whose impact on line companies is growing exponentially."

When Bev found out she was able to bring her mini schnauzer Molly to her Summerset retirement village, she was thrilled. “Molly is very important to me, I wouldn’t have wanted to make the move without her.” After being at Summerset for only a few months, Bev was surprised at how quickly she settled into village life. She really likes the feeling that she’s secure and that help is always at hand should she need it. She says that living at Summerset has given her a great sense of relief, “Now I can relax.”

After five years of planting close to 80,000 trees and countless numbers of volunteer hours, the Paremata Flats Restoration project has reached the end of its journey. Over that time, a dedicated team of over 1000 volunteers have rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in at the reserve near Cable Bay, and raised $190,000 in the process. Project coordinator and driver Ian Price says it’s been quite the journey, and he can now look back at all the hard work and breathe a “sigh of relief.” But he says, although the planting is complete, the work won’t stop. Volunteers will be back to to weed the reserve once a week from the end of June, with ongoing working bees. “The major part of it is now over, which is fantastic,” says Ian. “But weeding and trapping will be ongoing – we have over 50 trappers checking traps twice a
into a crisis in March and April after a significantly dry autumn. “Things dried out, so we had to step in with 14.5 litres of water to save the trees,” he says. “It was a major nightmare and it took an incredible amount of time, but it really reflects the professionalism of the whole project and the dedication of the volunteers, who come from as far as Richmond to help. These people don’t get paid - it’s just been a great team effort.” Ian says he has gained a huge amount of personal satisfaction from the project – formally a farmer in the King Country, he wanted to make up for the damage he did to the environment. “It’s about giving something back, and I feel like I have really returned something to the environment. It has been a tremendous project that has been exceptionally well managed.” Ian says that they are always looking for more volunteers to help with the weekly weeding, and encourages them to visit the website www.paremataflats.co.nz for upto-date information.

Some of Nelson’s youngest mums are developing a green thumb, and at the same time are installing a love of gardening in their children. Students at the Young Parent School, which is located next to Auckland Point Kindergarten, have created an edible garden with their children, and it’s also contributed to the kindergarten’s recent success as a Silver Enviroschool. The Young Parent School, which opened in 2013, offers a dedicated ‘Potiki’ room for the teen’s infants as part of the kindergarten, so young mums can come and study while their children are being cared for. And thanks to Enviroschools, funding an edible garden was established in the Potiki outdoor area last year, initiated by a vision of one of the teen mothers, Terrah Conn. The parents help decide what vegetables they would like to plant at the beginning of each year, and then help plant the seeds and young plants, alongside their children. The children then help to care for the garden – wa-

Bok choi, silverbeet, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, herbs, lettuce and carrots are used to make puree for the babies, for cooking at the kindergarten, or taken home to make stir-fries. Eighteen-year-old Heather Palmer, who attends the school with nearly one-year-
old Jayden, says it has inspired her to have a garden at home one day. “It’s great being able to take them home and choosing what we want to grow, although Jayden loves pulling them out,” she says. Head teacher of the Young Parent School, Phillipa Trewavas, says it’s not just about gardening.
“It’s about composting, recycling and doing it right for the environment,” she says. “It really fits into the holistic education we provide.” Enviroschools is a nationwide programme which focuses on teaching kids to be thoughtful environmental citizens and Auckland Point Kindergarten held their Silver Reflection last Tuesday.

First Fight 4 Victory boxers to be unveiled

Andrew Board The first match ups of Fight 4 Victory 3 will be unveiled at a special event at Bowater Hyundai next week. The 'After the Bell' event will see several match ups announced as well as giving people the first opportunity to buy a corporate table for the fight on November 5. Fight 4 Victory, a charity boxing event, was first held in 2013 as a fundraiser for the Victory Boxing Charitable Trust. The event features around ten bouts of local businesspeople, sportspeople and those keen to support the work of the Victory Boxing programme. The previous two events have attracted huge crowds and have raised tens of thousands of dollars for the trust, which focusses on running boxing fitness classes for kids, but also caters for adults. Chair of the trust, Scott Gibbons, says After the Bell is a great way to build excitement around the event. “It’s really exciting, it’s admirable for those guys to put their hand up for the charity. Like always, it’s a bit of a personal challenge, as well as raising money for Victory Boxing.” He says they are in talks to bring several sporting celebrities to speak at the After the Bell event, but none had been confirmed at the time of print. Scott says the trust has had great support from fighters involved in the first two events, one of those being Bowater Hyundai and Isuzu CEO Chris Bowater. “The event has a team approach and it shows again with Chris [Bowater] who was a boxer in the first event, has been a supporter since, and here we are three years later holding the launch event in his venue. We couldn’t be more pleased with that type of approach.” After the Bell will be held at Bowater Hyundai (opposite McDonald’s) from 5.30-7pm on Friday, July 8. Entry is free and open to anyone who’d like to head along.

Hira Rural Fire Force receive new truck Locally Owned and Operated
Next time the Hira Rural Fire Force roll out to a fire they’ll have a brand-spanking-new truck to do it in. On Friday, the Nelson City Council officially handed over the keys to a brand new 2015 Hilux, kitted out to be Hira’s new fire truck. Hira Rural Fire Force Controller Ian Thomas says the crew are really excited to have the new fire truck. “It’s great, it’s safer to handle, has more power, carries more water. Salisbury School to close: This school will be sadly missed in Nelson and also by girls New Zealand-wide. It is definitely the wrong decision to close this school. Wendy Eden.
So, if the Minister says it is not true that she has been trying to close the school since 2012, why has her Ministry capped their entry numbers, down from 80 students to 20? Why has her Ministry-appointed IWS Board refused entry time and time again to those parents that have requested their daughters be given access to Salisbury? Why has her Ministry gone ahead with making Haswell a co-ed facility, even after the court ruling that this placed young women, made incredibly vulnerable by their special challenges, in extreme danger? Why then has her Ministry-appointed IWS Board not put forward Salisbury as an option to those families with children who need 24/7 wrap-around care by highly qualified teachers and carers, which is exactly what Salisbury delivers? This is a serious mistake and, if it is allowed to go ahead, will be detrimental to a substantial group of high-needs young women and their families. Tracey Martin. So disappointed to read of the closing of Salisbury School. It has been operating for many years and has played a major part in helping so many young people. This goes hand in hand with this Govt's policy of closing mental institutions and half-way houses. If you need help, well, too bad. Lorraine O'Donoghue. Greg Waddington and his wife Deborah have owned Cartridge World Nelson for 11 years and last year won Franchise of the Year Whether your printing needs are commercial grade or you have a home printer that sees minimal use, Cartridge World Richmond and Nelson has everything you need to achieve a perfect print job every time. Greg and Deborah Waddington took over the Nelson store 11 years ago before establishing a second business in Richmond in 2008. “Funnily enough the day we opened Richmond we were in such a mad rush that it wasn’t until a couple of days later that we actually realised it was the exact anniversary we’d taken over Nelson,” says Deborah. It was Greg’s expertise in computers, printers and all other related technology that made them the perfect pair to take on a business within the franchise, as well as their commitment to providing their customers with sound advice on all things printing. Deborah says their secret to 11 successful years in business is all down to customer service. “We

really pride ourselves on our customer service, it’s out first goal and we always say to staff when we’re training them that its customers service that counts for everything, plus, we know all the ins and outs about our products because that’s what we do. Cartridge World is all about printers, ink, toner and paper and we know how many pages per printer per ink or toner you’re going to get.” Whether you choose to go to Cartridge World Richmond or Nelson, the customer service is exactly the same and when you’re looking for a printer for the home or office, the team will listen to exact requirements before helping you select the perfect tool for the job. “A lot of people will come in and say “it’s a $49 printer, let’s buy that one,” but what they don’t realise is they’re actually going to go through ten times more cartridges buying that one than the $100 one, because the $100 one does more of what they need, so in the long run they’ll save money. We always try and guide people in the right direction to buy the right printer for what they’re doing,” says Deborah. As well as stocking a printer for every budget and requirement, Cartridge World Richmond and Nelson also looks after people’s paper needs, from A4 or A5, through to photographic paper and eftpos and till rolls for businesses, but the core of their business has always been ink and toner. The team stocks both genuine ink and toner, which is

manufactured for a specific printer, as well as their own brand of Cartridge World inkjet and toner cartridges. The team is also proud to offer a refill service making it easy for anyone to turn in their empty printer cartridges and get a high quality Cartridge World replacement, which has a 100 per cent guarantee should people not be happy with it’s performance. While some prefer to have their original cartridge refilled and returned, others are happy to hand in their empty black or colour ink and toner cartridge for one that has previously been refilled and thoroughly tested to ensure it will work properly with their printer. This option not only saves people money compared to buying a new one each time, it also has environmental benefits, reducing the amount of waste. In recognition of the hard work Greg, Deborah and the team have
• OEM equivalent specifications - if OEM ink is a pigmented light fast ink then so is the Cartridge World branded product. • Cartridge World branded inkjet and toner cartridge yields = OEM yields. • Quality archival inks. • Quality Assurance tested and approved.

From the judges perspective the business had achieved considerable growth, as well as general all round excellence, including the support they provide to the rest of the Cartridge World group around New Zealand with Greg being part of the Cartridge World Franchise Advisory Council. From Greg and Deborah’s perspective, it’s meant looking after their business customers as well as the public to en-
sure people come back to them for all their printing needs. With 38 stores around New Zealand competing for the award, Deborah says it’s not exactly easy to come by, although they have won it in previous years for their Richmond store. Although Alex will be dealing more with the business's administration side, he's looking forward to getting his hands on the tools and introducing a new area of expertise, being the design and construction of sheds. With the rest of the team unchanged, X Factor Design & Build can fulfill all your building requirements, including re-piling new flooring, re-cladding walls and re-roofing. Whether you're looking for a brand-new build, a new interior layout, additional rooms or a professional restoration, choose the team that will give you that special finish and give Alex a call today. It was his time as a national league soccer player that first brought Craig Graham to New Zealand, to play and coach the sport in the 90s, before he disappeared overseas to the Middle East. Always ready to go that extra mile to achieve the best results, Craig brings a refreshing spirit to local real estate, so give him a call today for any of your property needs. You may not always see them but Nelson Suburban Club’s kitchen team are always working hard to create delicious meals for your dining pleasure. Head chef Mike McQueen and assistant chef Theo Aiken are recent additions to the Suburban Club, bringing with them a whole lot of cooking experience and fresh ideas to fill members’ plates. While Mike has been working in restaurants and café’s around Nelson for close to 15 years, as well as spending three years on the Gold Coast, Theo has worked on and off within the industry for the last 10 years. Both are pleased to have joined the Suburban Club during its period of change and are looking forward to satisfying club member’s palates with a great range of food from the tried and trusted Club Café and new Carvery. Following the sale of the land and building that accommodated Tosswill’s Restaurant and the adjoining function room, Nelson Suburban Club has made a few major changes to the layout of their downsized facility. The section of the members’ bar that previously housed the snooker and pool tables has now been turned in to a smaller function venue to replace the Ken Ching room. It means that the weekly activities run by the club’s groups are still able to operate, and Suburban Club can still hire out the room in the evening for those requiring a private space for their celebration. Those using the new function space can also use the main member’s bar and take advantage of the Club Café and Carvery. As well as the original seating in the member’s bar, the incorporation of the Carvery has seen the creation of a new dining zone, with the carvery available Friday, Saturday and Sunday, or on request for large groups during the week. “Mike and Theo are both really experienced, really good chef’s and the standard of food that is coming out of that kitchen now is so much more improved compared to what we’ve had in more recent times,” says general
Suburban Club’s new head chef, Mike McQueen with one of his famous, mouth watering desserts. manager, Rob Finlayson. Mike and Theo have also brought with them a desire to create from scratch, instead of using bought, packaged products. “Mike’s making amazing desserts which people are really enjoying and that’s bringing a lot of people in. He’ll tweak the menu and introduce new dishes in the future and it’s good to see people coming back because they’re enjoying the food and hearing good stuff about it,” says Rob. The great thing about the new carvery is that people only pay for what they want to eat, instead of one blanket price for a buffet, where people may only eat a salad. The carvery offers three separate courses, in either a large or small portion, including a homemade soup, roast of the day and a selection of great desserts. The Club Café has also seen a new a la carte menu, offering up club members’ favourite dishes, while the chalkboard specials are always changing to take advantage of the seasonal produce. Open for lunch on Tuesdays from 11:30am until 2pm, and for dinner Tuesday to Sunday, 4:30pm until 8:30pm, the Club Café is also able to cater for functions for up to 50 people. “Since reducing the size of the club down, it’s got a good feel about it, a bit more of a buzz,” says Rob. “When we’ve got patrons in we’re getting good comments about it. They love the dining zone and overall people are saying it feels different which is good.”

It may have been an accident, but when your pride and joy gets dented, scratched or worse, it’s good to know there’s a local business that will restore your vehicle to its former glory. Quality Paint & Panel is currently celebrating the expansion of its premises, as well as 15 years in business as a team of tried and trusted panel and paint experts. Located on Parere St, off St Vincent St in Nelson, owners Alan and Sharron Martin have been with the business since day one when Alan was painting vehicles for a neighbouring panel beater. When the panel business stopped
operating, Alan expanded both the workshop and the staff numbers by employing his own panel beater, with the business constantly growing to its current size of six staff. Alan, who has over 20 years in the industry and is qualified in both panel beating and painting, has now joined Sharron in the administration side of the business. While Sharron is the friendly face behind the front counter and the first point of contact for clients, Alan relies on a great team of qualified tradesmen to help him keep Alan and Sharron Martin have been the proud owners of Quality things running smooth out the Paint & Panel for 15 years. back, in particular his workshop the man to speak to if Alan is while Daniel Fry, Murray and manager Murray Miller, who is unavailable and who splits his Yunus Mohammed are the time between being hands-on qualified painters, each also and filling out the paperwork. doing their bit to help train up Richard Goodall and Mark Fry apprentice painter Quinn Anare the qualified panel beaters, derson. “We’ve got a ~ Importers of American Motorcycles great bunch ~ Importers of Parts and Accessories for of guys and Harley Davidson Motorcycles without them ~ Midwest Ultima Motorcycle Dealer the business Proud to be suppliers to: ~ MTF Vehicle Finance Available (terms and conditions apply) wouldn’t be Garment & Industrial Textile Rentals thriving like â Overalls, Floor Mats, Cabinet Towels it is, we just Paper & Washroom Services get on like â Toilet Paper & Paper Handtowels (FOL dispensers) â Toilet-Sanitisers, Air Fresheners, Female Hygiene Bins one big famiSee our Managed 1st Aid Range @ www.alsco.co.nz ly,” says Alan. 3 Elms St Stoke, Nelson. of the team and as their designated groomer, ensures every car goes back to the owner looking like it just drove out of a showroom. Quality Paint & Panel’s recent expansion has been in the form of a third workshop, giving the panel beating team an additional and much needed 165 square metres, while Quality Paint & Panel also incorporates three preparation bays for priming and minor painting and a spray bake oven to achieve a factory finish on every paint job. “It’s just created more space and a better work flow, so we can get the vehicles out quicker than what we have been able to do before,” says Alan. “That’s what it’s all about, turnaround, people don’t want to wait around for weeks and weeks to get their car in to get repaired and then have it stuck there for another three weeks. They just want to get in and out within three or four days, which is our target. Their vehicle is usually their pride and joy, and although we’ve got several courtesy cars for clients to use, it’s still not their own car.”

It’s been a full on year in business for Phil Hazeldine after setting up his restaurant Phil’s Place within Club Waimea. While the success of the restaurant is, in part, due to Phil’s great skills in the kitchen, he also wishes to thank Club Waimea members for their loyal support throughout the year. Phil and his team have also had more than their fair share of mid-winter functions and are now gearing up for a busy summer with plenty of Christmas parties already filling up the diary. It’s the perfect set up with Club Waimea providing the facilities, while Phil consults with clients on the catering options that best suits their event, from platters and finger food for morning and afternoon tea, to full on buffets and set menus. With Club Waimea’s main hall accommodating over 200 people, plus two meeting rooms, one holding 30 people and one seating around 60, Phil has been kept busy meeting the needs of groups celebrating weddings and wedding anniversary’s and remembering loved ones during funeral services, as well as catering to corporate and business conferences and workshops. In addition to having a room to meet the needs of most private groups, Phil encourages people who are using Club Waimea as a venue to make the most of their other facilities before sitting down to their meal including darts, pool, snooker and bowls. Phil also owns Nelson Wedding Catering, which he operates out of Club Waimea and throughout the past year it has continued to work in harmony with Phil’s Place. With a team of dedicated food
professionals behind him, including Mike Johnson, Paula Carter, Marlene King, Gordon Stuart and Izzy Harper, Phil is keen to keep moving full steam ahead, providing good, honest cuisine for Club Wa i m e a members and offering private groups a wide selection of catering options to suit their complete requirements. George Bennett earns Tour de France call-up Jacob Page
Nelson cyclist George Bennett will ride in the Tour de France for the first time next month. The 26-year-old will be one of nine Team LottoNLJumbo riders to compete in the most renowned road race in the world. Former Village Cycles owner Jim Matthews, who gave George a job after school at the shop, says he and his family were over the moon at the news of his selection. “We’re just so happy for him,” Jim says. “He’s got some really good results in the lead up tours, so he’s been knocking on that door and he’s become race hardened. “When he gets up in the hills, he’ll be in his element.” Jim says he knew George

had the work ethic to make it as a top level athlete. “He was a mad keen rugby player and one of his coaches used to say he was tenacious, but the thing that always let him down was his lack of size. “I knew once he found a sport that suited him, he’d go a long way. Jim says George’s selection is bigger than the Olympics in many respects. “This is the race everyone
wants to be in,” he says. “When he worked here, he was a hard case. He’d come home from a long overseas trip, a long flight, but make sure he always popped into the shop to say hi to the guys.” Coach and mentor Robin Reid, who’s had a 10-year association with George, says he was immensely proud of the achievement. “He’s such a gutsy rider, always has been,” Robin

It was during that event that Chris texted him with words of encouragement. “I sent him a text and said I was really proud of the way he was riding and that I thought he deserved to ride in the tour, so hearing the news was great.” Takaka’s Jack Bauer competed in the Tour de France in 2014 and 2015.

The 24-year-old is back at his job as a concreter now the 2016 NBL season has finished but he has just returned from a twoday combine in Melbourne. Granger was one of 57 players who were put through fitness drills and body testing on the first day and then put into teams for numerous games on day two. “I wanted to test myself against guys that were doing this in Australia all year round and I think I did pretty well.” Ali got himself to the combine after seeing it advertised on Australian NBL franchise Adelaide 36ers Facebook page. Ali played the majority of his minutes off the bench for the Giants this year and although he has not re-signed, he was keen to return. Greenacres golfer found putting practice a little difficult to do on Friday at his home golf course, after he was named in the New Zealand team to contest the Eisenhower Trophy in September. The 21-year-old took just as many congratulatory handshakes as he did practice putts. “This is a big deal for the club and all the guys over the years have just been fantastic to me, so it’s nice to share this moment with them," he says. “It’s always been a dream, it’s the biggest thing you can do as an amateur and it’s definitely been on my radar, and for the last year it’s pretty much been my single focus.” Chisnall will continue to work at his family’s Elmside Estate Vineyards 20 hours a week while devoting the remainder of his time to golf. He played in the Mexico International Amateur Event a fortnight ago, which was paid for thanks to an invite to the event, but he largely funds his Charles Tour campaign in the Kiwi summer out of his own pocket. “I’m on GrabaSeat like everyone else, booking the cheap fares.” Ryan was introduced to golf by his dad and earned a handicap by age seven when he played out at the nine hole Totaradale Golf Course, before he moved to Greenacres 10 years ago. Ryan says former teammates Sean and Blair Riordan were big influences. “Those guys were a bit older but were in the same positions I’ve found myself in trying to make improvements. I learnt a lot travelling with them, competing against them and playing with them.”
greenacres golfer Ryan Chisnall will represent new Zealand at the eisenhower trophy in Mexico in September. Photo Jacob Page. Ryan will be joined in the team by Auckland’s Nick Voke and Waikato’s Luke Toomey. New Zealand won the Eisenhower Trophy in 1992 with the team of Michael Campbell, Phil Tataurangi, Stephen Scahill and Grant Moorhead. The biennial tournament has been active since 1958. Ryan says he had questioned whether he would make it when he was 18. “I wasn’t putting the time in preparing for tournaments and it started to show. “I’d been in the New Zealand Golf junior set-up since I was 14, but I had a year when I was 18 and 19 where I was dropped from the squad. “Looking back, it was probably the best thing that ever happened to me because it got me out of that safe environment of New Zealand Golf and forced me to do things on my own. "I started getting some results and I got
my way back in and I’ve appreciated it ever since.” Ryan says he was excited about turning pro early next year but was under no illusions about how tough it would be. “My coach Jordan Dasler caddies for [Kiwi pro] Michael Hendry and I know Michael a little bit so I’ll be keen to learn as much as I can from both of them." Ryan says he will aim to play in China and Australia. “They aren’t big tours but they offer me the chance to play every week," he says. “The ultimate goal is to play in major tournaments and on the PGA Tour. Just to play an event on that tour would be great. “Having said all of that, there are other tours that you can play regularly and still make good money. Playing a prestigious event will be the pinnacle of a career that still has plenty of potential."

Nelson College successfully defend Moascar Cup
Jacob Page Sports Editor
sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Nelson College defended the Moascar Cup with a convincing 25-14 win over St Andrews College at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. Waimea Combined also made the most of the bye last week to record a gutsy 15-12 win over Burnside High School at Waimea College, to keep their Crusaders Secondary Schools campaign ticking along The visitors had toppled Nelson College earlier in the season so Waimea Combined's victory, set up by resolute defence, should add spice to the all-Nelson clash next month. Prop Sam Beech and flanker Sam Prestell scored in each half respectively but it was Waimea's defence
the knockout blow. No tries were scored in the second half as defence ruled for 40 minutes, but Nelson’s physical, driving tackles and discipline at ruck time, along with their line speed, ensured St Andrews College were always playing catch-up. Football league title an open race Jacob Page Richmond Athletic can now focus on the last five games of their Nelson Bays Division One football campaign and the chance to clamber back into contention. Their Chatham Cup run ended after a 3-0 defeat to Universities in Christchurch on Saturday leaving them free to work out what’s caused a slump that has seen them look more like pretenders than contenders for the league crown over the past month. Coach Matt Campbell says another tough 10 minute period in the first half saw them down 3-0 at the break and their chances of victory were all but gone. Matt says the second half effort was more like the Richmond Athletic which set the mid-season pace. It’s hard when you concede three but the way we played in the second half was a big improvement. Matt admitted while it was disappointing to be knocked out of the Chatham Cup, it allows the team a chance to focus on the
league title chase with Suburbs Seals and Marlborough Mariners. “We’ve proven we can win five games in a row already this season and we have to believe we can do it again.” Matt says goal keeper Blaise Cousins made some good decisions at the back during the game against Universities, while midfielder Bertie Fish proved Tasman United’s decision to sign him for their debut national league season was a good one. In the league games this weekend, Marlborough Mariners made the most of Seals and Richmond having their league showdown postponed, to leap to the top of the table with a 3-0 win over Pomeroy’s Wakefield at Blenheim’s A&P Park. Seals have one game in hand, while Fresh Choice Richmond have two. Max Winterton scored twice as Nelson Suburbs Reserves proved too strong for Nelson College first XI 4-1. Tahuna edged FC Nelson 4-3 thanks to a late penalty.

Big scores as gap widens in senior rugby Jacob Page
The gap between the top and bottom three in the Nelson Bays senior rugby competition is widening, but the hunt for the last top four spot is still on. Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers made the most of a fast start and home advantage to beat an improved Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys 36-10. A try from Steve Ng in the second half was the first in three games for Waimea Old Boys, but Wanderers scored six in total to ensure they sent a clear message to both Marist and Nelson who were equally as con-

vincing in their victories. Wakatu Hotel Marist happily travelled to Freeman’s Roofing Stoke and came away with the four try bonus point in a 40-5 win. James Hawkey scored 20 points for Stoke in what was a dominant second half performance. Wanderers are now in the box seat to finish top of the heap as they look to go one step better locally than they managed in the Tasman Trophy final. Galbraith Nelson made easy work of Kahurangi 53-7 as they continued their high scoring ways. Centre Amos Pongia scored two of Nelson’s nine tries in the soggy conditions at
Neale Park. Number 8 Isaiah Miller scored inside the opening minute and Nelson’s dominance never relented. Marist and Nelson’s clash at Tahunanui on Saturday will be one to look forward to, while Waimea Old Boys host Kahurangi at Jubilee Park and Wanderers host Stoke at Brightwater. In division two action; highflying Collingwood sneaked past Riwaka 1312, Stoke were too good for Marist 35-19, Huia edged Nelson 17-12, Waimea Old Boys beat Wanderers 21-13 and Tapawera/Murchison ground out a 19-17 victory over Rangers.
Jacks make most of first quarter dominance Jacob Page Jacks Ale House proved too strong for Nayland College B 3119 in the senior 4 netball match at Saxton Stadium. Jacks Ale House were faster and more accurate in the mid-court from the opening whistle and dominated offensive rebounds. Jacks earned a 10-4 first quarter advantage which they never relinquished. Nayland appeared to have two shooters in Maggie Riley and Toni Dunn who could be accurate from distance, but their team-mates did not treasure possession in the opening quarter. Nayland's passing was initially loopy and proved easy to pick off for the Jacks Ale House defenders. The second and third quarters saw the schoolgirls settle into their rhythm more and they
were able to apply more defensive pressure and go goal-forgoal with Jacks for most of that period. Jacks Ale House wing attack Jess Young had a strong game, while goal attack and captain Jane Daubney formed a good rebounding combination with goal shoot Louise Weallens. Jacks Ale House scored three unanswered goals in the final minute of the third quarter to give them a 24-15 advantage at the final break. With the intensity out of the game by the fourth quarter, both teams lost a lot of shape and rhythm to their play. Nayland could be satisfied by how they did not let the scoreline blow out after such a challenging opening quarter but, Jacks controlled the mid-court and thoroughly deserved their margin of victory.
