EDITOR’S NOTE

Hi Marlborough, it’s good to be back! This edition of the Marlborough Magazine is our first since March, when Covid-19 played havoc with all of our lives (and our print schedule). But after taking a breather to allow our wonderful advertisers time and space to get back on their feet, we’re back publishing our region’s only locally owned lifestyle magazine. Being local and supporting other locally owned business has been a big focus of this magazine. We’ve often encouraged readers to support other local businesses and I’m thrilled to report that the community spirit in Marlborough seems to be alive and well after lockdown. Several retailers I’ve spoken to in the past few weeks say the support from

Marlburians has been critical to helping them get back up to full speed. We’re shopping local, supporting local and it’s amazing to see – well done! This month we feature a big section on domestic travel and improving your home. With overseas trips out of the question at the moment, it’s a great time to be either spending that money on visiting other parts of our country, supporting local tourism operators or looking to improve your home. After such a sudden pause, life seems to be getting back to business. Sport is back on the schedule and the ‘to do list’ seems to have doubled, but we need to remember was how precious that time to ourselves or with family was during lockdown. Life is back to a new normal, make sure that includes time out!

Q&A

Simon Lamb creates some of the region’s most loved goat and cow cheeses. He speaks with Marlborough Magazine about the ins and outs of creating mouth-watering cheese.

Are there any types of food that you should never eat with cheese? Kiwifruit doesn’t seem to go that well with cheese, but it is all about personal taste. What cheese (made by Cranky Goat) takes the longest to mature and why? Mount Cawte is the longest cheese to mature. It can take up to 12 months. We make so very few of them that we sometimes forget they are there! If you had to pick just one type to take with you to a desert island, what would you choose? That’s a difficult question, it’s like asking which child you would take, but if I had to choose it would be the old Tomme as it would be the easiest to keep.

SIMON LAMB

Cheesemaker, Cranky Goat

Do you use the talents of one taster or do lots of people try a batch before it can be sold?

Since the company began, Cranky Goat has won several medals in national competitions; what is it that makes your cheese so special?

We do cheese tasting every Friday with everyone in the business involved. Family and friends are also great for feedback on the products, as are the markets.

Our main focus is on quality and freshness. We make cheese seven days a week within 15 minutes of milking finishing. This means the milk is at its best, we are also lucky that the quality of the milk we receive from our neighbours Andrew and Jackie Leslie is amazing. We are also passionate about what we do, and this is reflected in the cheese we produce.

How do you know when your cheeses are ready to sell?

How do you decide on what types of cheeses to make? Often from reading about other cheeses around the world and listening to what customers want, especially restaurants who come up with some great ideas.

We taste just about every batch of cheese that goes out. If there was one piece of advice you could give people about the best way to eat your cheese, what would it be? You cannot rush cheesemaking, as it will be ready when it’s ready, and eating cheese should be the same. Don’t rush it enjoy the flavours and their interaction with what you are having with it. Understand when you like the cheese as Artisan cheese change throughout the season. It is very much personal choice.

T

he buzzing of the needle blends with music and chat as the day gets underway at Picture Perfect Tattoos.

India, 25 years old, is one of them. It’s her fourth time here in the last three weeks for work on a Batman sleeve.

Eye-catching colour hits you as soon as you step inside the Scott Street premises, with pictures, paintings and drawings displayed on all the walls and the doors.

“We’ve got Batman characters on it: The Joker, Vale, Batman, and later on we’re going to do Catwoman as well,” she says.

Between the colour, the abstract and the realistic, the Marvel universe dominates. On the main wall, your eyes are drawn to three big superhero posters: the tattoo artist Adele Harris, her business partner Jarrad Johl and his brother Hamish Johl, who has recently joined the team as an apprentice. Here is the trio who run Picture Perfect Tattoos, established in Blenheim in October 2016. It’s 9.30am and the studio has already welcomed its two first customers.

India has chosen Picture Perfect because of their reputation. For her, Jarrad is someone that you can trust, and he also loves comics. “I’ve always been a massive sort of nerd, so the fact that I have to tattoo it for my job is pretty awesome!” laughs Jarrad. Born and raised in Blenheim, Jarrad has devoted hours to this particular design; his attention now focused on India’s shoulder as he tattoos Batman’s spotlight beaming across a dark sky.

“We did Batman yesterday, it took about four and a half hours,” explains the artist. “The characters are based on pictures from the internet and I just paste it together.” This is how Jarred, known for his realism, prefers to work. “I always have proposals for my clients. Most of them come with an idea and they are happy for me to go for it. Like India, she wanted a Batman sleeve and she lets me do what I want.” People who come through the doors are usually “average clients” in their 30’s, but the two young business partners are getting more and more older women asking for small tattoos. It is the case this morning for Adele, working in the other room.

DAVID JAMES

Tattoo artist Adele Harris set her sights on becoming a tattooist at just seven years old.

DAVID JAMES

Her 50-year-old client is having her first tattoo: a pair of angel wings on her upper back. Known for doing mandala designs (geometric configuration of symbols), lines and dots works, Adele is passionate about her work. “I like not doing the same thing every day and using my creative freedom. “This is my social time, I don’t go out that much so it is my way to meet people, spend hours with them and create friendships.” It is a real vocation for the cheerful woman who told her parents that she would be a tattoo artist when she was just seven-years-old. “My mum was a painter and we were raised around art. I remember my first year at school, one of the relief teachers bent over, and she had a rose and a butterfly tattooed on her lower back. I just thought it was the coolest thing ever. My mum has a picture of me when I was six, covered in those stick-on tattoos.” Adele later moved on to the real thing and much of the left side of her body is a work of art. Jarrad has tattoos everywhere. His throat and the back of his head are the realisations of his favourite artist, Matt Jordan. “I had the first one when I was 15. I get tattoos myself just because I think they look cool; they don’t have many meanings. I will get a tattoo just for a laugh.” This is what happens with clients sometimes. In his eight-year career, Jarrad has tattooed a few rear ends. “They are usually sort of jokes or because someone lost a bet. A long time ago I did a few flies coming out of this guy’s butt.” “I also had a guy who almost got crashed into by one of those massive wine tanks. He wants to get something to remember that, so he is getting the Grim Reaper who is drinking wine. Like death was too busy drinking wine to take him that day, which is really cool.”

Jarrad Johl has seen the tattoo industry become more competitive over the years.

Both tattooists remember their longest work. It took about 36 hours for Jarrad to cover a client’s back with coloured

comic characters. The entire tattoo was completed in two years. Adele spent nine hours once working on a half sleeve for a client.

“Tattoos are looked at as an art form rather than just tattoos or stickers like they were 20 years ago. That’s the best direction that it can go in,” he says.

“It was unreal. I’d tattooed her partner before, and she was really determined to beat him.”

Jarrad’s only goal now is to keep getting better and to keep learning, “because you never stop learning.” he explains. “How you approach the tattoo, the way you think of the design, that’s why the tattoo industry has grown so fast, everyone is looking at each other’s work, it’s a really competitive industry.”

While there is little they won’t do, Māori cultural art is off limits. Instead they rely on the expertise of fellow tattoo artist Jake Stafford-Wood. “We don’t do it because we don’t understand all the meanings behind it. We have Jake Stafford-Wood for that. He’s from Blenheim but is based in Melbourne at the moment. He comes back every few months,” says Jarrad. New Zealand is one the most tattooed countries in the world for its population, says Jarrad. He is noticing that people are becoming more creative and open with their designs.

With an undeniable talent, four years after opening Picture Perfect, Adele and Jarrad, who have known each other since they were young, have made a name for themselves. There’s currently a four to five month waiting list for their skills. The design, size and placement of the tattoo will determinate the price.

Winter – The perfect time to say farewell to varicose veins and sun damage

Dr David Orsbourn has become the go-to man in Marlborough for varicose vein treatment. After seven years, his clinic at the Churchill Private Hospital continues to grow in popularity, as David discovers he is regularly treating family, friends and workmates of past patients. Some of the most popular and effective treatments include:

• Fractora: The #1 treatment to restore sun-damaged skin! This procedure uses fractionated radio frequency energy to rejuvenate and resurface the skin, slowing the effects of ageing and restoring your skin. It’s perfect for reducing redness, brown spots and fine lines, but has the added benefits of tightening your skin and improving the overall skin texture. The gold standard in resurfacing treatments. David believes that winter is the perfect time to treat unsightly varicose veins. “Many people feel more comfortable wearing trousers or tights following varicose vein procedures. So, it stands to reason, that winter is a great time to ready your legs for their debut later in the year!” he says. But varicose vein treatment can have benefits beyond the purely cosmetic. Since David began consulting in Blenheim, he’s treated hundreds of patients. While each has enjoyed new-found confidence in baring their legs, the treatments he offers have also been life-changing in other ways. While not all varicose veins are visible, most will cause pain. Your legs may feel achy, heavy or tired. Or you may sometimes feel a burning or throbbing sensation in your legs. All of the walk-in, walk-out treatments that David offers can help to eliminate that pain, putting a spring in your step once again. Other patients present with restless leg syndrome. Those who suffer will consistently endure sleepless nights. Restless leg syndrome is often caused by venous insufficiency and resolved by treatment. Cramps, itching and unsightly pigmentation are other indicators that your veins are not functioning as they should. All the varicose vein treatments offered by enhanceskin are minimally invasive. A complimentary, full doctor’s vein assessment and scan helps to determine the treatment most suitable for you. • Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS) uses specialised ultrasound equipment to guide injections of sclerosant to close the vein permanently. This procedure is virtually painless, so requires no anaesthesia. ADVERTORIAL

• Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA), the gold standard varicose vein treatment, again, requires no general anaesthesia or hospital stay. You walk in and walk out (wearing compression stockings for two weeks) and can drive home afterwards. Like UGFS, there’s no downtime, and you can be back at work the next day. • Venaseal Glue is another option for a small number of patients with advantages David explains to those who he feels will benefit from this treatment. It’s clear that David has a real passion for what he does. “I never tire of seeing the profound effect the results of these treatments have; to know that I’ve helped improve a client’s quality of life, is just gold, it means I’ve done what I set out to do,” he says. enhanceskin has also met an increase in demand for the facial aesthetics treatments they offer at Churchill Private Hospital in Blenheim.

• IPL Skin Rejuvenation: Light is used to treat pigmentation, red veins, or both selectively. This brief treatment requires no downtime and after a course of three to five sessions, will give a seventy to eighty per cent improvement in appearance; so, you will no longer need to hide under makeup! • Platelet Rich Plasma: This involves taking a blood sample, concentrating the platelets from that sample and reinjecting the platelets back into the body to assist healing and regenerate tissue. It is especially useful for rejuvenation of crinkling skin around the eyes, jawline, lower-face; and around the lips, cheeks, mid-face volume loss, chest and décolletage. Brittany is delighted to be part of the reassuringly local enhanceskin team. “I love the enhanceskin approach to skincare and ageing. We are not trying to replicate a look from the Real Housewives TV show; you should look like you...” She continues, “Cosmetic treatments should offer a natural enhancement to your skin’s quality; improving fine lines, wrinkles and volume loss. But most importantly, they should help you feel more confident.” Winter is a great time to address sun damage. Brittany says they see clients with dehydrated skin. “At this time of year we often see new pigmentation and thread veins under the skin, easily attributed to sun damage.”

Cosmetic Nurse, Brittany Fenwick, recently joined the enhanceskin team, bringing with her year of experience. She has a background in medical, surgical and theatre nursing.

To target these skin concerns, Brittany offers several treatments that improve skin texture and skin quality and promote a more youthful appearance. Once again, to help determine the right course of treatment for each individual, Brittany offers an initial complimentary consultation.

ON THE STREET

Optician Alex Matthews likes to mix it up when it comes to clothes, combining edgy and traditional to create her own special style with great flair.

I like to buy from New Zealand designers where I can. But I mostly buy from second hand stores. Save the planet people.

What is your favourite all time buy?

Second hand Witchery brand jeans and Chuck Taylor sneakers, purchased from The Recycle Boutique in Wellington. An Angel Geo Cut, in Olive, over an edgy fishnet top. Both by C. Reed clothing. Topped off with my Hills Hats cheese cutter which is made in New Zealand. Oh, and my Fritz optical green glasses are from Matthews & Hassan Optometrists and are hand made from wood.

A mustard coloured leather 1970’s NZ made trench coat, which was a gift from my handsome rockstar husband. He found it in an op shop in Wellington and knew I’d love it.

Do you have a usual style?

A T-Shirt from whoever their absolute favourite band is! Mine is Big Scout. Best punk band, top of the South.

What do you have the most of in your wardrobe? Silk scarves, a hat for every day of the week and converse sneakers.

What trends or looks are you loving at the moment? Long, flowing skirts. There are some gorgeous colours around like copper and burnt orange.

July 2020

Where do you buy most of your clothes?

What are you wearing today?

I don’t, really. I’m always experimenting with it. Though, I do like to dress a little bit rock n roll sometimes.

16

They make me feel like dancing when I wear them!

Worst clothing disaster? Low rise jeans. No one needs their muffin top to have its own shelf.

What item should everyone invest in?

If you could raid something from anyone’s wardrobe, whose would it be? Iris Apfel. American businesswoman, interior designer and style icon. She always wears colour, op shop jewellery and bold glasses. She’s delicious, and 98!

Finish this sentence: You would never catch me wearing… Clothing too tight, too short, or too expensive.

Fake it till you make it Words: Jess Murray

Did you know dressing well or even wearing a certain colour can be an instant mood-lifter? Yes, it turns out confidence may just be a power outfit away! Research shows that fashion is one of the simplest ways we can transform our emotions and overall confidence. So let us help you dress for success! READY IN RED: If you wake up in the morning and the coffee just isn’t quite cutting it, your next best bet is to dress in red. The colour is said to evoke strong feelings of energy and excitement. Add a red lip to your outfit to really make that confidence level soar.

NEVER MELLOW IN YELLOW: If you’re feeling blue, we have the solution for you. Much like the bright summer sun, the colour yellow makes most people happy. Probably because memories of sitting on the beach or soaking up the rays are linked to the warm colour. Add accents of yellow to your outfits to bring out all those positive feelings and lift your mood.

COOL, CALM AND COLLECTED: They say when you’re feeling anxious, that blue hues are calming. Bring a sense of serenity to your outfits by showcasing any shade of blue. And if we haven’t already reminded you enough, the pantone colour of the year is classic blue – so what better reason do you need to incorporate the shade?

Sporting moments revisited

STEVE’S FIVE DAYS TO REMEMBER Words: Peter Jones

How a few days in 1973 shaped a young rugby player’s future.

“I ended up marking the fastest winger in the country [sprint champ Terry Morrison] and throwing the ball in,” recalls Steve.

uring five days in 1973, Awatere farmer and promising rugby player Steve Marfell’s life was turned upside down.

“For some reason they put a prop SUPPLIED [Murray Jones] up against our lock John Callesen in the lineout so I just threw the ball to John all day and that worked well. Morrison was certainly quick and if he had had a side step I would have been gone for all money.”

D

The 20-year-old bachelor had lofty rugby ambitions, but even he would never have dreamed of the historic success that was about to come his way. Steve had established himself as centre for the Marlborough Red Devils, a heady player, strong on the tackle with speed and the ability to beat a man. On Saturday, July 28, he travelled south with the team to Christchurch, prepared to take on Canterbury for the Ranfurly Shield, symbol of NZ provincial supremacy. The rest is history, Steve at the heart of the side’s backline defence as the men from the top of the south pulled off what is still regarded as one of the greatest underdog victories in the history of our game. But he wasn’t finished. As a member of the 1973 New Zealand Juniors squad who were about to complete a ninematch internal tour, he had another match to play. And this was also no ordinary game. The NZ Juniors, coached by Otago’s Eric Watson, were due to end their highly-successful internal tour with a match against the All Blacks at Carisbrook on Tuesday, August 1, a mere three days after the Shield win.

Steve Marfell, holding the Ranfurly Shield, is greeted by supporters in his hometown of Seddon, including his grandmother Olive Marfell and Laurie Rainey.

Steve was expected to travel directly from Christchurch to Dunedin to prepare for the All Blacks match, but Marlborough manager Jim Fraser was having none of that. Steve explains. “Jim knew Eric pretty well so he rang him up and said ‘this is a once-in-a-lifetime moment, winning the Ranfurly Shield, so I want Steve to come back to Blenheim with the team on Sunday and celebrate with our supporters’, which is what happened.” Consequently, Steve didn’t make it into Dunedin until Monday where he immediately faced a couple of new challenges. Just as the fixture itself was something of a step into the unknown, with the All Blacks touring internally due to a cancelled Springbok tour, Steve was thrust into two relatively unfamiliar roles. Formerly a midfielder for his club side and the Marlborough team, Steve had never played on the wing before the Juniors’ tour, or thrown the ball into the lineout, yet was handed those demanding jobs by Watson.

Again, Steve’s golden run continued as an inspired Juniors side upset their big brothers 14-10 to write another unique chapter in rugby folklore. While respectful of their opponents, Steve said there was plenty of selfbelief in their side. “We had a big advantage really. We were coached by Watson, playing at Carisbrook and we had been touring for a month beforehand, so we were a team. There was also a touch of arrogance about [the All Blacks] that day and they were rusty.” Steve went on to play many more games for Marlborough, and at a higher level, but said those few days were a particular highlight. “The whole weekend was [a highlight] really, you couldn’t get it any better than that.” But then he did go one better. Arriving back in Blenheim the day after the Carisbrook clash he proposed to his girlfriend Gayle and was accepted. They are still together 46 years later – Steve’s third match in five days proving the most memorable and enduring of all.

MAKING THE MOST OF BEING

At Home Location, location, location Your home and where you choose to live are some of the biggest decisions you’ll make. There is plenty you need to consider, says Jason Anderson from Anderson Architecture. The site and surroundings are vital. A rural or Sounds location should reflect the natural beauty while a subdivision build needs a point of difference to ensure it stands out, he recommends.

“A renovation project should complement the existing house and enhance what is already there. “Spending longer on a well-thought out design process while be hugely beneficial in the long run,” he says. With these in mind, choosing a designer you feel comfortable with is crucial, Jason says. “They will be with you for the entire project and should be just as excited as you are. “Pick a builder or building company you can be open with too; it will help ensure your project runs as smoothy as possible. “It may seem like a no-brainer but beginning with a project budget is a must. This allows your designer to guide you to a range of concepts you can afford and get excited about.”

Home comforts and style It’s always a good idea to ask a professional for their help first when it comes to making your home warm and cosy or a cool retreat. They can visit your home and see exactly what solution will be best, what would work well and provide the ultimate in comfort. Many will be happy to provide you with a quote and advice for free says Steph Martella from Martella Refrigeration & Air Conditioning. Looking at the bigger picture is a good idea too. “You may be thinking one room at a time, but it’s best to consider heating solutions for your whole home. “Often people prioritise a large heating source for the living area rather than heating the bedrooms of their home. It may cost less than you think to upgrade

to a whole home heating solution,” she says. “Don’t forget summer comfort. Although heating is a priority in winter if you are in the planning stages of your build or renovation remember to allow for solutions that will also keep you cool in those stifling summer nights.”

With a free in-home measure and quote service, it really couldn’t be easier. From made to measure to custom creations, the team at Guthrie Bowron can help make choosing curtains, blinds and flooring a breeze. With an impressive range of quality designs and fabric to choose from, making your dream look a reality is easy.

Plan ahead and reap the benefits long term. When it comes to choosing the finishing touches for your home, turn to Guthrie Bowron, a name you know can trust. Look at lots of examples to get an idea of what will suit your home. With extensive range of top-quality flooring and curtain options to chose from, there’s plenty to inspire, no matter what you’re looking for. Not quite sure what you want? Let the friendly experts help you find a look you’ll love.

Feeling the warmth at home Winter Is Here. The condensation, the cold air coming through your windows and suddenly, the comfort of home is starting to fade. Don’t let this happen to you, get your home double glazed NOW! The team at Marlborough Glass and HomePlus make double glazing your home easy. They will come and chat with you about the benefits of double glazing, measure your windows and provide a free quote. So, what are the benefits of double glazing? Apart from reducing heat loss, blocking out noise and eliminating condensation, double glazing is a great way to add value to your home before you sell it, after you’ve moved in or if you just want to make your current home warmer and cheaper to heat. Marlborough Glass and HomePlus can even colour match the new windows to your existing joinery because they custommake them to fit your home perfectly. They also offer a five-year warranty, giving you peace of mind.

The great outdoors How do you want your garden to look? What landscaping works with your home/ rest of your garden?

“Consider the fact that some trees in your area will lose their leaves all winter, leaving your garden looking bare.

Immerse yourself in inspiration from landscaping websites/magazines so you can come instore with a clear idea of how you want to go ahead recommends Astrid Senior at Centaland Holdings Ltd.

“Once you have decided what kind of decorative element you want to add to your garden landscape, you want to make sure it stays looking as aesthetic as possible for as long as possible.

“Having a home garden has suddenly become all the more appealing. But before you dig in and plant your favourite potatoes or carrots, it’s important to take time to ensure your soil is healthy and correctly prepped for your vegetable of choice!

“Putting down a layer of garden tarp before laying your product can protect the product from getting dirty and/or sinking into the soil, which will make it disintegrate faster,” she says.

“Some plants require more or less acidity in the soil, more or less nitrogen in the soil… it’s important to have an understanding of this before you plant and take measures to adjust your soil so that you can get the best out of it, “ she says.

Thinking about how much time you want to spend maintaining your garden is the first thing to think about when decided

on a landscape upgrade says Landspec managing director Andrew Goodsir. He says it’s a good idea to consider the short- and long-term goals when planning and budgeting for your landscape and outdoor construction. “Completing stages in the correct order helps avoid unnecessary expenses along the way.” Investing in the right tools can also ensure your outdoor space is kept in tip-top condition. “Do you have the time to water your garden to keep it looking healthy? Investing in a good irrigation system from the start, specifically the lawn, pays off in the long run.”

There is a lot to consider when organising your garden. Taking measurements of sections where you want to place stone, bark or pavers so you are able to get estimated quotes also saves a lot of time when coming into your local landscaping products store,” Astrid says.

The experts behind the scene For more than 35 years, the professionals at Martella Refrigeration & Air Conditioning have been helping families and businesses across Marlborough. From residential houses to large commercial sites, the dedicated team of 20 provides a complete design, supply, and installation service you know you can always rely on.

Y

ou have probably spotted one of their vans with their distinctive orange and blue logo driving around Blenheim. The Martella name stands for a tradition of family orientated care and attention to detail. In 1983, Allan and Sally Martella founded the Blenheim-based firm, taking it from strength to strength as their reputation for excellence grew. Today, Craig, one of the couple’s three sons, has taken over the business and proudly continues to build on the strong foundation his parents built. The other Martella brothers – Ian (Marty) and Bryan, run their own successful businesses; Callahan & Martella Electrical and Industrial Refrigeration Marlborough.

Service, quality and innovation As managing director, Craig does his share of paperwork but prefers to be out and about, meeting customers and helping them find the right system for their homes. “I really enjoy giving people solutions for their homes, making their lives more comfortable,” he says. When choosing the heating and cooling system for your home price is obviously a consideration. However, the quality, energy efficiency and performance of the product are also at the forefront of our client’s minds. So, although price is important, it is generally not the deciding factor. People want to know they are getting a good product with a good service and reputation behind it. Staff quite rightly take great pride in providing their customers with trusted brands like Daikin. Martellas is the only Daikin authorised specialist dealer in Marlborough and were one of the founding New Zealand dealerships over 27 years ago. They continue to prefer the Daikin brand because of their innovation, reliability, and energy efficient solutions.

Another strength lies in the company’s capacity to provide innovating solutions like hot water heat pumps for hot water cylinders, underfloor heating, radiators, and swimming pools. These offer an alternative method of heating hot water and the home, by heating and circulating warm water, bringing significant energy savings when compared to traditional electric or gas heaters.

Thanks to changing from gas to a hot water underfloor heating system, one of Craig’s clients is now saving hundreds of dollars per month! “It is something that you really want to do when you are building or renovating. It is a really nice system to have,” he says. The team’s dedication and commitment has already made them the first choice for ADVERTORIAL

an impressive range of clients. Martella Refrigeration & Air Conditioning installed all the air conditioning and ventilation for the Kmart build as well as the recent upgrade at Witherlea School and are currently working on the Quality Hotel. For the Witherlea School project Craig explains they were approached by a local architect to offer a design. “We have chosen the best option called a VRV product. Instead of having a dozen outdoor units, you just have a couple of outdoor units’ pair in multiple classrooms, and it is all controlled by BMS (building management system)”.

“The other big thing with that job was the ventilation, which is becoming more and more important for public buildings to provide clean air solutions” says Craig. Over the decades, the company has built up a reputation as one that can be trusted. “Reputation is really important to us,” says Craig. “We put a lot of focus on getting it right the first time, because we do want to be here in 10 years, in fact we still want to be here in 20 years”. “Mistakes can happen, but we try to stand behind what we do and put it right, so I’d like to see that legacy continue on.”

Involved in the community As a local business, Martella Refrigeration & Air Conditioning is proud to be involved in community projects. They have recently donated a heat pump to the Churchward Park Scouts. “There are a lot of heaters in there, which are really expensive to run and not really safe. “The funny thing is that my brother and I went there when we were Scouts, so it was a nice thing to do,” smiles Craig. Another project close to his heart is to sponsor a few Marlborough kids to allow them to participate in an Outward Bound course which offers an outdoor experience for young people.

Looking to the future Although some construction projects have been put on hold Martella Refrigeration & Air Conditioning are feeling optimistic about the future and are pleased to be a part of upcoming projects such as the Lansdowne Park development. Projects like this are enabling Martellas to expand their team and take on a young Marlburian for an apprenticeship. Since the COVID lockdown restrictions Martellas have noticed more people wanting to improve the comfort of their home and have helped to heat over 50 Marlborough homes. And they are looking forward to helping more Malburians create warmer, healthier homes this winter.

How to grow winter veges You can’t beat homegrown veges. They taste better, you know that they’re pesticide-free, and they have the added bonus of saving you money. Winter is a great opportunity to plant your garden with some different kinds of crop to compliment your winter meals.

What you’ll need: Vege plants – your selection of seedlings or seeds Vegetable mix Vegetable fertiliser Seaweed tonic Slug and snail pellets Peas straw mulch Garden gloves Mask Garden hand tools Spade Garden fork Watering can or hose

Plant type and timing June through September is the right time to be growing and harvesting your winter veges. The main trick with vege gardens is making sure you have a long harvest, with no waste. This is why succession planting is important - don’t plant everything at once, as it will all be ready at once. Modern hybrid varieties

30

July 2020

of vegetables are higher yielding, better tasting, more disease resistant, and grow more uniformly than old varieties of plants. When selecting plants look for seedlings with four to six true leaves and which are five-eight cm high. Some of the most common winter veges to grow are: Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, brussel sprouts. Lettuces, spinach, silver beet. Onions, leeks, garlic, shallots. Celery – a great space saver. Carrots, beetroot and parsnip.

Planting seedlings Lay out your plants according to your growing zones. Leave space for succession planting and companion planting. Dig a hole to fit each pot size. Remove each seedling from their pots, place into the hole and back fill with soil. Press each plant firmly, but gently, into place. Stake or frame any vegetables, such as beans, that require a structure to grow around. Add a layer of pea straw mulch to protect your plants against the elements. This will also help keep the roots moist, and keep the weeds at bay. Water your plants. Add slug and snail pellets to protect against pests.

Watering Water your veges regularly. Luckily, with the winter rain this is a bit easier to stay on top of. Give them a boost by adding in a liquid fertiliser.

Feeding Feed vegetable food regularly to encourage healthy vegetable growth and microbial and earthworm activity in the soil.

Pests and disease Winter keeps most of the common pests and diseases away. However, it always pays to be vigilant with slugs and snails with some slug and snail bait. You don’t want them eating your precious crop.

Location Vege’s do best in sunny, sheltered spots either in the ground or in a raised garden bed – which are very easy to make.

Soil The easiest thing to do is use a vegetable mix. It’s a high quality natural-based planting mix with the right blend of nutrients that’ll give your veges the best possible start, and sustained growth throughout the season. You can also boost your soil with a liquid fertiliser like seaweed tonic. If you’re digging yourself a new vege garden – you’ll want to have a good look at your soil before you start, as there’s no point going any further if it’s not in good condition. For example, if your soil has got a lot of clay in it, or if it’s alkaline, your veges won’t grow well. But you can prep the soil for next year by treating it.

Recreational opportunities abound in this vast playground, with passive and active pursuits of every kind being available to those who opt to seize the opportunity to visit. The journey south provides many places of interest that need to be explored. By the time you reach Maruia Falls you will be ready for a pitstop, a picnic, or a stroll while enjoying this picturesque location. Buller Gorge Swingbridge and Heritage Park is a must-see tourism destination located in the Upper Buller Gorge. An exciting place of adventure, visitors can feel the rush of the high speed Cometline Ride, walk along New Zealand’s longest swingbridge, pan for gold treasure, and view some of New Zealand’s best native flora and fauna on one of the many bushwalks. People of all ages love the adrenaline rush as the Supaman ride launches you into the air.

Immersed in history, Reefton may be a small village, but it is big in every other respect and well worth a visit. In the north-west, just above the quaint coastal township of Karamea, is the Oparara Basin. Its vast caverns and natural arches, made of limestone carefully crafted by water action, are simply stupendous. At Punakaiki, north of Greymouth, another natural attraction that should be on everyone’s bucket list are the limestone formations that depict pancakes. Visiting at high tide brings home the real power of the Tasman as it smashes into the Coast. The force of the waves rocketing skyward through giant blowholes is more than capable of taking one’s breath away.

On the edge of nearby Lake Brunner the picturesque little hamlet of Moana can be reached easily by road and is another little gem which deserves inclusion in any travel itinerary. A hop, skip and jump away, the aqua waters of the Hokitika River gorge are also a sight to behold. Further to the south, the mirror images provided by the Southern Alps as they are reflected in Lakes Mapourika and Moeraki, are a must for every traveller’s digital diary. Nothing moves at pace on the Coast with the Most, which is why everyone should make plans to visit. A combination of visits to history and heritage sites, along with a mix of high-octane adventures and more passive undertakings form the sort of overall experience of which memories are made.

Bowel screening back on track

Health

The national bowel screening programme is free for men and women aged 60–74 years. It aims to save lives by finding bowel cancer at an early stage when it can often be successfully treated. The progamme was put on hold during the Covid–19 lock down but has since restarted. Why is bowel screening important? Bowel cancer is the second highest cause of cancer death in New Zealand. Every year more than 3000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer and more than 1200 die from the disease. Nelson Marlborough Health has the fourth highest rate of bowel cancer nationwide. Bowel screening every two years can help save lives by finding bowel cancer at an early stage, when it can often be successfully treated. There may be no warning signs that someone has bowel cancer. Bowel screening can also detect polyps. These are not cancer, but they may develop into a cancer over a number of years. Most polyps can be easily removed, reducing the risk that bowel cancer will develop.

Invitations and kits

If you are experiencing possible symptoms of bowel cancer If you are experiencing symptoms, such as a change in your normal bowel habit that continues for several weeks, or blood in your bowel motion, it is important to seek advice from your family doctor who will refer you for urgent assessment and treatment.

Restarting screening invitations New screening invitations are being sent out again. If you turned 75 while the national screening programme was on hold, you will still be offered an opportunity to participate, even though you are now over the usual cut-off age of 74.

If you completed a bowel screening test before the Covid–19 lock down, your test will have been processed and you will be informed of the result.

In the Nelson Marlborough region we are heading towards the start of the second round of tests in August. This means that people who have already been tested will start to receive invitations for their second test.

If you received a test kit and were advised to put it aside until further notice, it is now safe to complete it and send it back.

People who did not complete their first test will also be invited again.

If your result was positive If you were notified that your test result was positive, you will be contacted by Nelson Marlborough Health to schedule an appointment for a colonoscopy. A colonoscopy is recommended within three months of having a positive test result. DHBs are giving priority to people needing urgent investigation and then moving onto people who have had a positive screening test, so there may be a delay before you receive your appointment. This may cause you some concern but remember that 92 out of 100 people who have a positive screening test will not have bowel cancer.

Please do not hesitate to raise any questions or concerns about this life-saving test with your family doctor, or with a health professional available on the free helpline, 0800 924 432.

makeup. Don’t assume that your healthy lifestyle is completely protective, and get any symptoms checked out. Family history is important too, especially with young people. What are some symptoms of bowel cancer?

Health | Q & A Dr Chris Liyanage & David Richards Colorectal Surgeons at Churchill Private Hospital & Specialist Centre What does a colorectal surgeon do, and why do you do it? We specialise in the management of a full range of colorectal conditions including bowel cancer. We provide endoscopy services such as camera examination of the stomach (gastroscopy) and bowel (colonoscopy) and general surgery. It is a rewarding job in every aspect because we can make a big difference in someone’s life with good outcomes. I’m young, fit, and I always eat my greens. Am I at risk of bowel cancer? Diet can alter your risk of bowel cancer but the risk is also linked to other factors in the environment and your genetic

The main symptoms are bleeding from the bowel and a change in bowel habit, particularly diarrhoea that persists. Others are abdominal pains or weight loss, anaemia and a sensation of incomplete emptying of the bowel after visiting the toilet, or a lump that can be felt in the abdomen. Even if you are unsure about what your symptoms mean, get checked out. We would rather sit and listen to someone’s problem that they may feel is trivial than miss someone with a serious issue that needs to be fixed. Some symptoms can seem very minor but can ring alarm bells for us. I have a history of bowel cancer in my family, but I have no symptoms. Should I still be checked? Yes. Depending on your risk level and age, we sometimes recommend a colonoscopy to check for polyps, which could be a precursor to cancer. Bowel cancer is the third most common type of cancer in New Zealand, and our rates of this disease are the 14th highest in the world, but it is important to know that it is a treatable condition if found early.

What happens after I see a doctor about symptoms or for a check, and need further investigation? You would see us and we’d take a full history of your condition, including your past and family health, and you may have a physical examination. The next step might include blood tests, scans and x-rays and possibly an examination of your bowel with a flexible camera (colonoscopy). Any tests would be explained in detail before you consent to the procedure. We do hundreds of these tests every year - we are very experienced and very aware of patients’ concerns. To be honest, I’m just reluctant to talk to anyone about this sort of thing. Nobody likes to discuss problems related to their bowels but we regularly see patients who we could have helped much more effectively if we had seen them earlier. With years of experience in this specialist area, there is almost nothing that we haven’t seen or heard before. Please don’t be shy – make it our problem and get checked out. Don’t sit on your symptoms. We are highly experienced professionals who spend every day talking to people just like you with abdominal complaints. We will put you at ease and investigate your problem appropriately and efficiently — we are with you every step of the way and offer a caring environment to support you.

All change can only come from oneself first. Yet we haven’t been taught how to practically create the breakthrough and change desired and required. What’s next on your wish list? Do a TEDX talk, facilitate a Wellness Retreat in Hawaii and write another best selling book. What’s your favourite way to spend an “Idle Moment”? I love spending time in nature, listening to podcasts and not much beats reading a good book.
