Coping with change Paula Hulburt and Chloe Ranford Protecting the people of Marlborough is a top priority and everything possible will be done to help. Marlborough Mayor John Leggett yesterday issued a heartfelt message to the public in the wake of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s decision to raise New Zealand's alert level to level three, with level four coming into force on Thursday. “This is an unprecedented global emergency and everyone in Marlborough needs to play their part. "I think it was inevitable ... This is a clear signal that this is a very serious situation and that we each have to take responsibility to get through this.” Nelson Marlborough Health chief medical officer Nick Baker says he believes the number of cases in Nelson Marlborough will continue to rise in the short term. “The fight against Covid-19 will not be won in hospital corridors or at GP clinics but in the supermarket aisles. “The key message is that we are physically separated but still together. The virus is like an invisible enemy; you only know it’s there seven days after it arrives.”
Dr. Nick Baker. File photo. Dr Baker says these “challenging times” were especially hard for older, more vulnerable people in society. “Be strong, be kind and think about your neighbours. The virus is like a fire if you like, we must keep it from spreading.” Mayor John Leggett strongly urged Marlborough to support the Prime Minister’s and Ministry of Health’s advice and direction. Council’s pandemic planning has been fast-tracked. The Marlborough Pandemic Group met yesterday to discuss the Covid-19 crisis and share the latest information about
the economic challenges now facing the Marlborough region. Mayor Leggett, who chairs the group, says it’s a difficult time but people are doing their best to adjust to the new environment. “Marlburians can have confidence that there is a lot of good work going on at the moment and our key industries and employer groups are responding to the challenges of the Covid-19 crisis.” “We will come out the other side of this - we are a resilient bunch who have experienced challenges and emergencies before.” Chief executive Mark Wheeler says council will be focusing on delivering “critical lifeline services.” “Our focus now is on delivering critical lifeline services such as drinking water, waste management, sewerage and effluent disposal, road maintenance and emergency management. “Keeping Port Marlborough and Marlborough Airport operational is also critical.” Mark confirmed the Blenheim office front counter in Seymour St will close too. Anyone wanting council services should contact them via phone on 03 520 7400 or email mdc@marlborough.govt.nz

Drone rescue for paraglider
Paula Hulburt
Thirteen ground crews and five helicopters fought a blaze in Seddon on Sunday. The fire, near Tallotts Road, tore through dry scrub fanned by nor’ west winds. The fire was contained by about 4.30pm. Photo: Summa MacDonald.
A seriously injured paraglider was rescued from remote farmland after he was spotted by a drone. Emergency crews spent 45 minutes searching for the paraglider who crashed about 12.45pm on Monday. A drone pilot, called into help police and fire crews find the missing man, discovered him at Longpoint near Ward Beach. The injured man is believed to have spinal injuries and warned rescuers he is also a possible Covid-19 risk. He was flown by helicopter to Wellington Hospital shortly after 2.10pm. A police spokeswoman says emergency services were alerted at 12.45pm. “Emergency services responded to a report of a paraglider crashing on a farmland near
Anzac Day public service axed Paula Hulburt Anzac Day commemorations have been cancelled across the region as fears for public health grow. Services around Marlborough have been cancelled and the annual Poppy Day Street Appeal postponed for the first time since 1922. Marlborough RSA president Chris Bamber says the decision has been made to protect the health of veterans, members and the public. “It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce the cancellation of Anzac Day services. “This is the right decision in light of the global pandemic situation. “We get tremendous support from our Marlborough community and feel a great sense of sadness at not being able to share this special day with you all,” she says. RSA national president B J Clark says this is the first time that public services to commemorate ANZAC Day have been cancelled and the Poppy Day Appeal postponed. New Zealand is under attack and so the bonds of service, sacrifice and support that our community has demonstrated in times of war, adver-

sity and natural disaster must once again come to the fore,” he says. “COVID-19 is a powerful and dangerous for. RSA’s and the communities they are part of, all-over New Zealand must fight hard to protect our whanau and kaumatua from the transmission of this virus in keeping our proud memories of service and sacrifice. “Unprecedented times call for unprecedented decisions to protect the health and safety of all New Zealanders, Clark says. Chris says she hopes people will still be able to mark the moment on 25April. “We can still honour and remember the service and sacrifice of our servicemen and servicewoman, both past and present, on Anzac Day but not just in the form of commemorative event. I hope people can still spare a few moments during the day to remember. “Marlborough RSA will continue to ensure the wellbeing, health and safety of all our members and their families and urge all our community to be kind, respectful and think of each other. “These are unprecedented times.”

Gin is the tonic
Usually, gin sanitises from the inside out – but one Marlborough distiller has turned that on its head. Elemental Distillers have moved 100 per cent of their production from creating Marlborough Roots Dry Gin to sanitiser. And co-owner Ben Leggett says the sanitiser, made to World Health Organisation guidelines, will be strictly limited to Marlburians. “The big emphasis – it’s strictly limited to begin with,” he says. Stocks of sanitiser have sold out across the country. “We don’t 100% have it ready to sell but we wanted to get ahead of it,” he says. Ben says he hopes it will be ready by the end of the week. “We’ll be quite strict and limited on how it works.” Low stocks of bottles, pumps and ingredients have made making large amounts of the sanitiser difficult. “The World Health Organisation posted a recipe and we’re going to be making that exact recipe,” Ben says. “But the ingredients for the recipe are selling out. “The whole of New Zealand
Ben Leggett. File photo. has sold out [of sanitiser] because of the demand.” Ben says they will be selling the sanitiser as refill packs and encouraged customers to save their old pump containers. Just over half of every distilling run doesn’t make it to the bottle, but the 80 per cent proof alcohol makes a perfect sanitiser, he says. “When you distil gin, you separate it to cuts,” he says. Called the heads, hearts and tails, distillers want the best part – the heart of the run. “Every distiller decides at which point those pieces are. “We will make a public announcement when product is available. There is no waiting list so please do not request pre orders. “The situation is still very fluid and we are working hard to expand production nationally.

Sharing the warmth Matt Brown In a bid to share their Christian values Richmond View School students are raising money to provide comfort and warmth for other children. Elim Church childrens’ pastor Amber Watson says the high school students at the faith-based college are learning to “think outside themselves” – fundraising to provide warm clothing to those in need. A movie fundraiser at the weekend,
a “bouncy castle lunchtime” and a chocolate drive hoped to raise $2000 to provide another school with desperately-needed warm clothes before winter. “We would have liked to give every kid a jumper but the costs are quite high,” Amber says. “It’s biblical. It says in Matthew when you see someone hungry, feed them. If they’re cold, clothe them.” Year 10 student Ella Yadav says she’s happy to help out wherever needed. “It’s good to be doing something to
bless another school,” she says. Split into three teams, students were instrumental in organising and running the fundraising activities. “It’s been very student led,” Amber says. “It’s thinking outside your own square – need is everywhere.” Amber says they’re investing in helping others. “As the school grows, we have to develop as the students develop and give them more responsibility,” she says.

Shows stopped at stricken theatre Chloe Ranford Local Democracy Reporter
Staff at Marlborough's ASB Theatre are revealing the venue may not be used again this year as shows are cancelled in the wake of coronavirus. The multimillion-dollar theatre, which opened four years ago this month, is set to generate zero income until the end of June. About $240,000 worth of events have been cancelled or postponed following the Government's directive to limit gatherings. On Thursday afternoon indoor gatherings of more than 100 people, except at schools, workplaces or on transport were banned. Marlborough Civic Theatre
Trust trustee Anton James, a self-described pessimistic, says he is preparing for no events for nine months. "We still have costs for staff, we still have other costs which come up for regular things that have to happen," he says. James says next month the trust would analyse how it could cover its costs. The trust would come back to council later this year to discuss what the theatre needed to survive on "a very base level". It already received a $390,000 grant from the council each year. "I don't know how this [coronavirus] is going to play out,” James says. He met with theatre staff on Thursday to discuss options.
DANCE on grove tutors Gemma Allen, left, and Elly Molloy still hope to run their December production at Blenheim's ASB Theatre. "We will have to look at what we can do around their hours. All the jobs we thought we had to do will be reassessed carefully. "It's not great news for our staff, but it is what it is." James says the trust would use the downtime as an opportunity for locals to be trained in
light, sound or theatre operations to build up local knowledge and ease the burden on staff in future. "This is a good thing for the longterm cost base.” Deputy Mayor Nadine Taylor says staff were now looking at how to help before next season. "There will be another season, there will be next year. It's just about ... working out how we can get to next season, because - I have to use a pun in a time like this - the show must go on." Councillor Mark Peters says the council understood the next few months were uncertain for the theatre, as with all businesses. DANCE on grove artistic director
Jeannie Mark says while the group had cancelled its mid-year ballet at the theatre, it still hoped to run its December production. "No-one knows what's going to happen in the next few months. "Obviously everything is going to be impacted [by coronavirus], but I don't want to discourage the children. They look forward to those times," she says. Trust chairman Kevin Moseley says the theatre suffered several blows last week, including the cancellation of Blenheim Musical Theatre's 'The King and I', worth a "significant amount". Kevin says there had been a drop in events over the last year, the biggest proportion being conventions, but also cancellations. Shows have also been cancelled thanks to poor sales, which the theatre had "no control over" and was an issue nationwide. "They haven't got a handle on why it's happening yet," he says. The theatre was focusing on what it could control, which were local performances, which were "doing well". People wanting ticket refunds should contact the ASB theatre.

MGC volleyballers tops in Tasman Peter Jones
The Marlborough Girls’ College senior A volleyball team won the Tasman Championships at the weekend, following on from their third place at the recent South Island Secondary School champs. The win secures them the No1 Tasman spot, and a ninth place seeding at the forthcoming NZ Secondary Schools Champs. First up at the weekend MGC played Nelson College of Girls B and prevailed 3-0, winning the sets 25-7, 25-16 and 25-10. Next up was Nayland B, who were also beaten 3-0 (25-4, 25-12, 25-7), followed by the Nelson College of Girls A side. This match was also won in three sets (25-17, 25-13, 25-13) but the tournament final, against Nayland A, turned into a much closer affair, a five-setter lasting over two hours.
MGC won the first set 29-27, lost the second 22-25, won the third 25-22 but lost the fourth 31-29. In the intense fifth set, played to 15 points, MGC trailed 2-8 before recovering to win the set 15-13. Coach Dierdre van Velthooven said, “while it was a whole team effort, the team benefitted from some outstanding play by Louise Brown, Anna Gardiner and Isabella Rohloff. Those three players were also named in the tournament team.” The result means MGC A remain unbeaten in the Tasman region for the season. At the recent South Island secondary schools tournament MGC registered wins against Riccarton, Cashmere, Columba College and Lincoln. They followed that with a 3-1 loss to Burnside and St Andrews, in the semifinal, before downing St Margarets College to come third.

A hole in one on the final day by Julie Smith, playing on her home course, provided a spectacular highlight of the Allan Scott Family Wines Women’s Golf Tournament that concluded at the Marlborough Golf Club on Wednesday. Smith aced the par-three 121m fifth, and a hole where a car was at stake for a hole-in-one the previous year. This was the 21st staging of the popular tournament, which attracted over 200 golfers from throughout the country to the Fairhall course. On the final day, Wednesday, a gross competition was staged, with Fleur Reynolds from Muriwai prevailing with a score of 81 from Rarangi’s Tracy Bary who was a shot further back in the division one standings. On Monday the players competed across three divisions in a stableford competition, with the overall winner being Dale Bain of Feilding with 48 points. Sixty five enthusiastic women cricketers took part in Sunday’s Churchill Private Hospital Women’s Cricket Festival Day. Ten teams, some with large numbers of vocal supporters, enjoying the perfect weather as they played a number of six-aside matches. Players batted in pairs, facing two overs each, then all had a chance to bowl an over. Marlborough Cricket Association general manager Ed Gilhooly said, “We received plenty of positive feedback and judging by the noise around the park it was clear every-
one was having a great time”. Team Pino Balls were the competition winners with Courtney Bowen being adjudged player of the day, her team mate Danni Mete claiming the award for biggest hitter and Kerryn Wood taking out the prize for best catch. Some of the responses on social media summed up a popular event. “So much fun....anyone keen for a social game or indoor cricket? “So much fun today and on Tuesdays. I’ll really miss playing!” “Loved it! Thanks for roping me in” The festival will certainly be returning next summer, added Gilhooly.

Community sport put on hold Peter Jones Reporter
peter@marlboroughmedia.co.nz
Marlborough’s community sporting landscape was effectively wiped clean by the coronavirus pandemic scare last week. Sport at all levels was either postponed, put on long-term hold or simply cancelled as most sporting bodies reacted to directives from national bodies and government pressure to reduce the number of people gathering in one place and the likelihood of contracting the virus. Mainstream sports such as rugby, football, cricket, hockey and netball all issued statements outlining the drastic measures employed to protect their communities and those surrounding them in the coming month or so as the nation battles to keep the virus under control. Rugby and netball were first to react, announcing on Tuesday that their sports, at community level, would be postponed.
Rugby New Zealand Rugby postponed all club and community rugby until Saturday, 18 April. That postponement included all rugby matches, although noncontact training activities can continue, at least in the short
term, while NZ Rugby continues to monitor the situation with the Ministry of Health. School rugby and, in most cases, junior club rugby competitions start in early May and are therefore unaffected by the postponement at this stage. The only rugby currently being played in Marlborough is the Tasman Trophy competition which began across the top of the south on March 14. As it stands, the competition is set to miss out on at least four rounds of play, although the Tasman union are currently looking at alternatives. At this stage, full-contact training can resume from Monday, April 13. Netball Meanwhile, Netball New Zealand and the country’s five netball zones decided to postpone all winter competitions until at least Saturday, May 2. The advisory from NNZ includes the postponement of pre-season programmes, tournaments, workshops and other community competitions, including social leagues that are currently in progress. Those involved with community netball, including umpires, players, officials, and committees are being encouraged to conduct any essential meetings online whenever possible. Any clubs or schools in the process of trialling, naming teams and commencing trainings are to also postpone until four weeks before the start of their competition, or the first week in April at the earliest. Marlborough’s netball competitions are scheduled to begin in on May 2, with premier play starting on May 5. A pre-season tournament planned for April 5 has been cancelled, plus rep trials and the scheduled school holiday programme. Football A day later, more grassroots sports felt the bite of Covid-19 as football, hockey and cricket released statements regarding their immediate future. All Marlborough club football competitions are cancelled or postponed until Saturday,
May 2. All Marlborough Football programmes, Futsal, NZF Football Skills Centres, Tasman United Academy and holiday programmes are cancelled and will resume in term 2 from Tuesday, April 28. Club trainings are also cancelled, but can resume after April 18 – two weeks prior to the start of the new season.
Hockey Marlborough hockey also took action. Hockey Marlborough postponed the College trials/ muster that were to be held last week and on March 25, then cancelled the planned pre-season mixed club competition and the interschool summer hockey competition. Cricket While the Marlborough Cricket Association are obviously at the tail-end of their season, they are also impacted. Following advice from NZ Cricket, they decided to cancel the remaining cricket games and programmes for this summer. This includes the second grade Challenge Cup final, age group development games, Yeah Girls Hubs, Superstar Academy Programme and school visits scheduled for term 1. Other sports Other sports affected include harriers, who postponed their
season for “an unknown period of time”, plus Bowls Marlborough who cancelled scheduled champion of champion events in line with a Bowls NZ edict that all organised bowling events for the season be cancelled. The forthcoming Maadi Cup regatta was cancelled early last week, effectively ending the season for the region’s college rowers. Following direction from Tennis NZ, the Marlborough Tennis Association has cancelled all organised competition until at least May 2. That covers all interclub competition, organised club tournaments and events, organised affiliate tournaments and events, plus organised midweek competition and club nights as well as the local High Performance training programme. Four sports based at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000, which was shut down at 5pm on Sunday, have also made other plans. Marlborough Volleyball decided to cancel their Thursday night competition last week after Government restrictions limiting gathering to less than 100 people were announced. Swimming Nelson Marlborough, which includes the Blenheim Swim Club, have decided that all SNM meets until the end of April will be cancelled.
Marlborough Basketball have no competitions running at the moment and are monitoring the situation regards rep team trainings. The Marlborough Squash Club met yesterday to decide what their approach would be. Marlborough waterpolo is cancelled until next term at the earliest. All NZ waterpolo is on hold or cancelled until further notice, including the Pan Pacs which were scheduled for July. Marlborough table tennis, which is played at Simcox Stadium on Batty’s Rd, have postponed the start of their season, a decision which will be reviewed in May. The Marlborough Open scheduled for May 16-17 has been postponed. Things are also quietening down on the water. The Queen Charlotte Yacht Club has suspended all organised club activities until further notice, including weekend club racing and all coaching. The Waikawa Boating Club on Monday suspended all racing and other activities. Along with the above competition closures, two high-profile social sporting events have been postponed - the Whitehaven GrapeRide, rescheduled until February 27, 2021, and the Saint Clair Vineyard Half Marathon, which will now take place on May 8, 2021.
