Are you cruising for a bruising? Fight 4 Victory is back Andrew Board The region’s hardest hitting charity event is back and its organisers are putting the call out for willing contestants. Fight 4 Victory 3 will be held at the Trafalgar Centre on November 5, a little over 18 months after the event’s second edition. And the team behind the event say now that the venue is confirmed, they need to find those willing to pull on the gloves and get in the ring. Victory Boxing programme director Paul Hampton says they’re keen to hear from people who would like to give the event a go. “It is a big commitment to put yourself forward for this. Firstly, they need to strongly believe in what we’re doing here. But also someone who would be excited about

Rest home manager backs postie
The postie who came under fire from her employer last week for not delivering “scam” mail to elderly residents says the support of the Ernest Rutherford resthome manager means a lot to her. Last week, the postwoman, who has not been named, was facing discipline from New Zealand
Post for not delivering the scam mail after she was first shown a US$180,000 lottery scam from Malaysia by a colleague who received it in his own letterbox. One of the areas affected was Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village. Manager Durham Quigley told Nelson Weekly that “we are

very supportive and think she has done the right thing”. Durham also slated NZ Post for disciplining the postie, and allegedly threatening her with dismissal or
a jail sentence, for twice refusing to deliver the scam mail. “We are very pleased with her in regards to the protection of our residents,” Durham says. “She hasn’t opened the mail or redirected it or anything, she has just told people there is a scam. “We are getting this sort of stuff a
lot and she was just fulfilling her moral obligation to inform people. I’ve been really surprised at NZ Post and the stance they have taken – I think it’s ridiculous. “She, at least, has a moral conscience and it sounds like NZ

“I totally agree with her. There should be something done to prevent scam mail being delivered to vunerable people.”
“In some ways I support her. Good on her for standing up for what she believes in. But then, it could open a can of worms.”
“By right, she should be delivering them - but she’s doing the right thing and being loyal to her customers.”
“I think it’s the right thing to do, morally. But on the other hand, she’s not fulfilling her job.”
Fight 4 Victory is back for another crack Rest home manager FROM PAGE 1 being a part of a great Nelson event and that can contribute to its success.” In the first two events, those to get in the ring have included police officers, sports people, business owners, chefs, hairdressers, engineers and lawyers. The fight nights have raised tens of thousands of dollars for the Victory Boxing Charitable Trust, which runs a youth programme for hundreds of school kids. Paul says the money raised from the event goes to supporting those kids’ classes. “We have a very busy gym and certainly, as the programme grows and we reach deeper into the community, it takes more resources. We set ourselves very high standards so this fundraiser

It is at least three months and takes a lot of time and dedication but we’ve had some great stories of those
who have spoken about it in hugely positive ways. Some have said it’s been lifechanging for them.” Each selection is made on a case-by-case basis, says Paul, but the most difficult part is getting even match-ups. “We’ve already had lots of enquires and people looking forward to being part of it, but it really comes down to how we can match up those entrants. At this stage, no one is confirmed for this year’s event until we can confirm a match-up.” Those interesting in taking part in Fight 4 Victory 3 should email their name, age, weight, height and a bit about their background, including their motivation for taking part in Fight 4 Victory, to paul@victoryboxing. org.nz or baz@galbraithgroup.co.nz

Post doesn’t. If they believe that they are not involved, they are stupid – they are walking away when someone is committing a crime and saying ‘it’s not my responsibility’.” Durham says their residents are “very thankful that she has informed them” about the scam mail. Nelson Weekly has been in contact with the postie who says Durham’s comments came at a time when she was “at her lowest”. Postal Workers Union of Aotearoa district president John Maynard earlier said that NZ Post’s actions were concerning. “It seemed they were trying to discipline her for opening other people’s mail, but that wasn’t the case.” A NZ Post spokesperson earlier denied claims the company had overreacted to the incident. Although the postie had breached conditions of her employment, managers had adopted a reasonable approach to the incident and had not issued a formal warning or threatened her with jail.

Builder finds his apprentice Andrew Board It took two months, saw almost 90 applications sent in and attracted support from local businesses – and now builder Andrew Martin has found his apprentice. Taine Dillon was a year 12 student at Nayland College when he saw an article in Nelson Weekly featuring Andrew and his building company, who were on the hunt for a new apprentice. Taine says he wrote his application straight away. “I had a deal with my dad that I couldn’t leave school until I got an apprenticeship. I’ve always wanted to be a builder, it sort

of runs in the family.” Taine says he was doing work experience with a builder through the Gateway programme that runs through Nayland College. “I’ve had that taste through Gateway, but it’s been teasing me because it was just one day a week and then I’d have to go back to school.” Taine says he was “stoked” when he was given the job. “I think my dad was more happy than me, he had a smile on his face all day. I think it hit me the day after.” Andrew says the quality of applicants was superb. “I was surprised by how many there were and how many good ones there were. There
were eight that we rung up and interviewed and of those there were four really good ones that I would have been happy with. Taine edged it because of his energy and enthusiasm.” Taine was given $400 worth of tools from Mitre 10 Mega and a some free lunches thanks to Subway Richmond. Andrew says if any other builders need an apprentice to get in touch because there are some top applicants still without a job. “I’d also like to donate $200 to the Nelson Tssman Hospice on behalf of the Nelson Weekly, because what you guys did for me was awesome. We’ve got a great apprentice out it.”

Hundreds celebrate Mother’s Day with a run The Jennian Homes Mother’s Day Fun Run/Walk took place in Richmond yesterday, with nearly 700 people taking part in support of women’s heart health. The event began in Champion Rd, and followed a five kilometre route. It was part of a nationwide initiative that is run by Jennian Homes annually to support the Heart Foundation’s ‘Go Red for Women’ campaign, which aims to improve the heart health of New Zealand females. Heart disease is the single biggest killer of women, taking the lives of over 50 each week in this country.
An extra special touch of the Nelson event was the CPR coaching that was provided on site by local St. John paramedics. The ‘Cardio Coaches’ used practice mannequins, and gave training to family members while they waited for their loved ones to complete the route, as well as to runners who had finished the event. Henley School is also benefiting from the heart health message, as it will be receiving $2500 worth of Rebel Sport vouchers. Schools were nominated by fun run/walk entrants during the registration process and Henley School had the most nominations.

Public forum heats up over Southern Link Kate Russell Nelson City Council heard all sides of the Southern Link debate at Thursday’s council meeting, in a public forum that took almost two hours. Usually the public forum sees up to around three speakers, but the hot issue of the proposed arterial road through Victory saw eight groups and one individual speak - many whom were armed with handouts and power point presentations. Speakers included Allan Kneale from the AA, principals of Nelson Intermediate and Tahunanui Schools, Dot Kettle from the Chamber of Commerce and representatives from Grey Power, the Tahuna Business Association, Victory Guardians, Nelsust and Progress Nelson Tasman. In a standard public forum, individuals are allotted five minutes and groups or organisations are given 10 minutes, with a usual combined time-slot of around 30 minutes. But Mayor Rachel Reese told the Nelson Weekly that because of the interest in Thursday’s agenda, she

The only individual to speak was Lindsay Wood – a local architect, who came to speak up as “the citizen on the street.” Wood made a point of reference to US transport infrastructure adviser Roy Kienitz, who says that building roads to ease congestion “is like trying to cure obesity by loosening your belt”. Councillors listened intently to the speakers, asking
plenty of questions, even challenging some on their views – but following the public forum, councillors unanimously agreed not to provide feedback on the proposed motorway to the New Zealand Transport Agency. A motion moved by councillor Kate Fulton met widespread support, which will see the council reinforce its stance on supporting the construction of a shared cycle and walk way along Rocks Rd. Many of the councillors spoke of their displeasure of not being able to have their views

A seven-councillor majority have said they do not support the Southern Link, but Reese says the council could not send a submission because it had not consulted with the community on it. NZTA are half-way through a programme business case on the Southern Link Investigation, with more than 250 people attending its public information sessions in Nelson and Richmond last month. The next phase is the indicative business case (stage three), which develops the case further for one or two preferred options.

FOOD FOR SCHOOL KIDS: Martin Reading, centre, with students Kasandra Barber, left, and Lycan Brown, after Martin and his team of 12 volunteers from Food for Families made their first delivery to Tahunanui School on Monday. Food for Families is a charity which make and collect donated food from sponsors and turn them into balanced lunches which they deliver to school kids at Victory, Stoke, Auckland Point and now Tahuanui School. The charity already do 180 lunch-boxes each week but Martin says they’ll be making even more soon. “It’s very cool to know that these children are getting good, healthy lunches, especially when some turn up to school with no lunch and others come with an insufficient lunch,” says Martin. Photo: Brittany Spencer. NEW PETROL STATION: A resource consent has been lodged by Caltex NZ to build a petrol station on the corner of Champion Rd and Sailsbury Rd, adjacent to the Richmond Aquatic Centre. Nelson company, Coman Holdings Limited, purchased the 5260 square metre site at 149 Salisbury Rd from the Tasman District Council last year. The land is zoned for tourism and cannot be used for residential development. Progressive Enterprises had earlier lodged an application to rezone a site on the
opposite side of Salisbury Rd from residential to commercial as the first step to building a Countdown supermarket. RECORD FAIR: Nelson vinyl enthusiasts are in for a treat this weekend, as the annual record fair makes its return to the Free House for the fourth year running.
The boutique record fair will be held on Saturday May 14 at 1pm and will see record lovers rummaging through crates full of thousands of records for sale across all genres, including jazz, punk, reggae, folk and more. Organiser Grant Smithies says it’s a much-needed community event, and with Nelson not having any record stores anymore, it helps to create a ‘record store atmosphere’ where people can meet and talk music. If you have records to sell, call 546 8335 to book a stall.

Your Family’s Health vs Your Money When someone in your family is diagnosed with a serious illness you have three choices; 1. Wait until they can be treated in the public system, (can be 6 months +++) and hope they survive long enough to receive the treatment. 2. Pay for the treatment, (drugs, surgery, hospitalisation) and hope you don’t need to mortgage your house. 3. Plan ahead, pay a little bit now and get treatment when you need it at no extra cost! Due to the lack of funding for the Public Health Service, you can experience long delays before receiving treatment and many of the important drugs are unfunded. An example of such an unfunded drug is “Keytruda”, which has been approved by Medsafe to help fight Melanoma, the third most common Cancer in NZ, with over 2200 new cases yearly. As Nelson has so many sun hours, is it really worth the risk? Book on The Brook written by resident Andrew Board The history of the Brook Valley has been compiled into a new book which has been released for sale this week. Susan Harris grew up in The Brook and has lived many of her adult years there, too. She says she always wanted to write a book but it wasn’t until a community meeting at the Brook shop that she finally decided to give it a go. “I sat back and listened to people saying how The Brook has changed and I thought, ‘I have lived here a lot longer than most, maybe a book would be a good way to preserve the history of it’.” She says she spent three years reading old newspapers, trawling through museum archives and speaking with many of The Brook’s personalities. A big feature of the valley’s history is the number of floods that it has had to deal with, and the construction of the channel to help with the flooding. “During the floods everybody helped everybody, it was a great community feel,” she says. “One story from the floods that

He was down at the pub so she called and his response was ‘I’ve just got a jug in, you’ll have to wait’. “She couldn’t wait any longer so a neighbour helped her move it and it was lucky she did because it would have been flooded if it stayed where it was.” Susan says one the valley’s first
residents was the Blick family, who made cloth and leather. Their cloth earned a top award from Queen Victoria at a fair in London. The book features plenty of photographs and anecdotes. The book was launched at a Nelson Historical Society meeting at the Masonic Lodge on Monday night. To buy a copy of the book email susan.stephen@kinect.co.nz. The book is $25 per copy.

Mayor backs down on sport committee
Kate Russell
Nelson mayor Rachel Reese has backed down on a move to split the community services committee in two – an issue that has caused friction between Nelson city councillors over the past few months. The decision was announced at Thursday’s ordinary council meeting as part of the Mayor’s Report, with Reese stating that “she is not going to pursue the establishment of a sports and recreation committee.” The issue has resulted in some tense moments between Reese and mayoral
candidate and committee chair, Pete Rainey, during the last two council meetings. Rainey, who has chaired the community services committee since 2007, saw the move as a demotion, as it would have taken responsibility for sport and recreation away from his committee. The mayor announced the establishment of the new committee in early March, which was to be chaired by deputy mayor Paul Matheson. Reese stated back then that feedback from the community indicated that there is a growing desire for an additional focus on

sports and recreation, including mountain biking, the marina strategy and the campground review. The new committee was intended to “mirror” the current community services committee and membership would have stayed the same for both committees. When the matter was brought up at last month’s extraordinary council meeting, Rainey said he was “extremely disappointed” and found the lack of consultation around the change of structure “particularly unsettling.” Reese said in her report last Thursday

that she thanked councillors who had been supportive of offering additional assistance via a new committee structure, and remains disappointed that assistance has not been accepted, but will endeavour to find alternative solutions to meet the community’s needs. “The community needs connection on a human level and I encourage members to get out and talk to groups – I encourage that through my office,” she said. Councillor Mike Ward congratulated the mayor on her decision, saying that “backing down takes some courage.”

It may be Ash Wells’ first Triumph, but at 67 years old he’s more than happy with that. After a lifetime of riding and recently trading his Ducati in, the new Triumph proudly takes up garage space. Released at local Triumph dealer Filco Farm and Sport last week is the first sale of the new 1200cc Thruxton R high torque engine. This also coincided with the release of other popular Triumph models including the latest version of the T120. A good crowd was on hand for the launch, as was dealer principle Dave Filer and, from Triumph NZ, Nick Lewis. And Ash’s first ride? A nice leisurely trot “probably the Kohatu for a coffee, first”. Nelson kids keep the art of embroidery alive A newly-formed children’s embroidery group in Nelson is giving the “dying art” a revival – and they are enjoying every second of it. A group of seven budding embroiders picked up a needle and thread over the April school holidays, under the guidance of the Nelson Embroiders Guild who are starting after school classes at the Victory Community Centre this week. President of the Guild, Jane Couch, says it’s all about keeping the art of embroidery alive in younger generations. The guild has been around for 38 years and has a healthy 75 members - but they want to make sure those numbers don’t drop. “If we don’t teach it to our children, the art will die,” says Jane. “It’s about learning a new skill set, and if children are not exposed to embroidery, then they are not going to do it or see how much pleasure it gives them.” Jane says many of the children created their own designs at the workshop, and she was thrilled to see a boy attend – 12-year-old Jack Burrows, who proves that embroidery is ‘not just for girls.’ “He was absolutely fantastic,” says Jane. “He had no hesitation, and we learnt some things from him too. He was left handed, so it was quite a challenge teaching him how to stitch back-to-front.” When Jack was asked what he liked about doing embroidery, his answer was: “It’s fun and creative.” The embroidery classes will be held every Wednesday afternoon this term at the Victory Community Centre from 3.15pm - 5pm. The cost is $10 per term, which includes afternoon tea. Classes are aimed for children seven years or older. For more information, contact the Victory Community Centre on (03) 546 8389.

Rock display a delight: I wonder how many people have seen the wonderful named display of local rocks, only approximately a 100 metre walk to the north of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary. It'd be even better if the council could spruce up the display with a bit of water blasting, and provide some signposting to it. In the meantime, for anyone wanting to visit it, just head north (I think) from the sanctuary information centre, along a grassy track wide enough for a vehicle, until you come to a large flat area where the Nelson Municipal swimming pool use to be located. The display is just at the start of this flat area and is in memory of one of the city's engineers. This flat area would make a perfect children's play area and family picnic area. Genealogy group seeks WWI stories
Simon Bloomberg Reporter
simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Nelson genealogists want people to submit their family's stories of servicemen and women from around the region who served in World War I. The New Zealand Society of Genealogists Nelson branch has already assembled a basic information on the men and women from Nelson and Tasman involved in WWI, as part of the WWI 100 Year Commemoration. Last year, it also published a book titled All Guts No Glory about the chaplains and around 50 women who served as nurses in North Africa, Europe and the United Kingdom. However, the Nelson genealogists librarian Cheryl Carnahan says they have decided to ask families to provide additional information about their relatives involved in WWI to add colour and depth to their records. The group plans to assemble and preserve these records so they can "see the light of day" and be used by subsequent generations. "We had a few of these come to us and we thought it would be a good idea if we could ask families

Recorded at the same desk that OMC recorded the worldwide sensation How Bizarre, the debut album from Nelson band Urban is here, and will be launched at the Boathouse this Friday night. Being New Zealand music month, it’s a great time to celebrate local music, so it’s the perfect opportunity for the five-piece pop/rock outfit to debut their first offering, called Everything Except Time. The album, which was recorded at both Bay City Sound Studios and the band’s kitted out 'StudioBox,' which sits next to bass guitarist Mat Charles’s office, has been described as “accessible and easy listening” by
drummer, Richard Bradley. Mat says that recording the album, which was engineered and mixed by the experienced Mark Patterson, was a “massive learning curve.” “You can never get it perfect, but we are really happy with the way it turned out,” he says. The band, who also play an array of covers, started out in 2013 and are fronted by female vocalist Betsy Hill. They have also recently welcomed keyboardist Nao Uda to the band. Guitarist David Turnhout says that having Nao on board with her keyboard skills has added fullness to their sound, and with band influences ranging from Queen, Crowded House, Pearl Jam and Amy Winehouse, listeners can expect a

Freezing worker says goodbye Simon Bloomberg
The Nelson meatworks longest serving worker, Doug 'Muscles' Scowen, is retiring next week after 53 consecutive seasons on the job. Doug joined his father Bill in the old Stoke plant on January 2, 1963, after leaving Waimea College aged 15. And he's been there ever since, working as a ticket boy, neck stringer and trimmer before moving into the freezers where he spent 35 seasons. "I remember my first week because that's when I got my nickname. I was started working as a ticket boy and if any of the carcasses fell off the rail, I would have to pick them up. "But I was such a puny teenager that I couldn't do it. One of the blokes in the office yelled out "use your muscles" and that became my nickname - it just stuck." However, Doug soon developed into a strapping young adult with some real muscles and he put them to good use working in the freezer. It was well-paid work but Doug says they earned their money, lugging whole carcasses around in freezing temperatures for up to 12 hours a day. "It was better money than the six pounds ten pence I got when I started as a ticket boy and more than my friend, who was a apprentice mechanic, was getting. But it was hard work because it was all manual back then and we'd stack whole carcasses and do long hours. "Some of those big sheep carcasses used to be over 100 pounds. We used to lift pigs and quarters of beef in there as well - it usually took two or three of us to do that. "It was cold too because, back then, we didn't have any special thermal gear – just jerseys
and balaclavas. We'd wrap mutton cloth or hessian around our boots to keep our feet warm." Doug says the freezer hands also used to handle pigs and beef which were killed in the old plant, as well as cheese, fish and raspberries when storage in freezers around Nelson were full. He also remembers having to smash massive "ice stalactites and stalagmites" that formed in the original, "leaky old" freezers when it rained. "I'd go in there and clear them out with an axe and crowbar before we could start loading. Sometimes they were so big I'd have to go and get a kanga hammer from the engineers to break them off the floor." Doug later moved back to the mutton floor and offal department in the new plant in 2002. He even had two seasons working alongside his wife Elizabeth in the offal department, continuing the Scowen's long association with the meatworks. "Dad was a foreman in the rendering department and he got me my job there. My brothers Graham and Warwick and sisters Lorraine and Margaret also worked there, so it was a real family affair." After 53 years of waking up at 5am to get ready for work, Doug says he won't miss the early starts but he will miss all "the great people who work there". And he will still be busy, working his way through a "long list of jobs" Elizabeth has lined up and pursuing his interests such as tramping, wood turning and travelling. "It's going to be a big change after spending all my working life here. It's funny though, because when I left school and dad got me the job here I thought I'd give it a shot and see what happened but I stayed here forever."

Grassroots 1868 LTD Supporting from the ground up
Spud profits aid community groups The popularity of pre-cooked frozen potatoes is helping local community groups. Grassroots 1868 Ltd is a company not heard of before but they make possibly the most popular potatoes in Nelson. And its owner says the growing appeal of the spuds means more than $7000 has been donated to community groups. The vast majority of profits from the Grassroots 1868 Ltd potatoes is distributed to community groups, says business owner Garry Higgins. The pre-cooked, seasoned roast potatoes are made with high pressure cooker, their size and cooking process give a low fat content and the secret recipe delivers a great unique taste. Their popularity has seen a rapidly growing demand from wide variety of groups as they are great for kids to heat up, dinner parties, families and single people who only use what they need. People reheat them either in their ovens, deep fry, air fry or on the barbecue and sprinkle a bit of rosemary a couple minutes before serving. Garry says satisfied customers like to inform him of their experience and most tell of how they “had a dinner party and guests want to know how they cooked them”, but the secret is not revealed. Garry says the potatoes are sold hot at his other business, Richmond Roast House and Café in Richmond, as part of
the meals. When he brought that business, he found a niche market for demand of the frozen seasoned potatoes. On advice from his accountants at Johnson Associates, Garry registered the delicious pre-cooked, seasoned roast potatoes as an intellectual property with a registered trade mark for protection

Grassroots 1868 donated over $7,000 to local charities last year. They are available in the freezer section at:
Fresh Choice Richmond, Westmeat Richmond, New World Motueka, Night & Day Stoke, Fresh Choice Takaka and Mad Butcher Stoke
“The Roast House is my primary business and it’s important that we continue to grow and maintain profitability for staff and the community that demand a good hearty healthy solid meal,” Garry says. “But the potatoes are a side venture that has further growth to help support the community.” Garry says with demand in both business for both hot and frozen potatoes, outgrowing supply, he has invested in extra machinery to deliver a more consistent supply which has helped create extra employment. “Last year, we cooked over 20,000kg of potatoes nearly 6000kg was for the frozen range,” he says. Garry says he was keen for the profits of the potatoes to support the community, more so the grassroot groups as per name, but some larger groups are as valuable as Garry says “one day friends or myself may need them” . Last year, profits were donated to Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter (silver sponsor) Riding for Disabled, Waimea Old Boys, Tasman Golf Club, Richmond Bowls, Dovedale Country Fare, Nelson Horse Dressage, Autism NZ and local schools totalling $7000 Grassroots 1868 Ltd would like to thank the community for their support. Column: Diary of a dad (to be) Becoming a first-time dad is a momentous occasion for any man. Nelson Weekly editor Andrew Board is learning all about it as he prepares to become a father for the first time. His regular column will feature exclusively on nelsonlive.co.nz but here is the first installment.
I remember the moment of our conception very clearly. It wasn’t a night of passion at a far-away hotel, nor a drunken rumble in the hay. It was in a fertility clinic in Christchurch and the list of pornography options on screen in front of me started with “Asian” and made their way alphabetically across three pages. I won’t go into details, but it ended with me rather sheepishly placing a plastic bottle of my finest on a counter in front of the clinic’s embryologist. A brief background leading up to that point includes two miscarriages, thousands of tears and a monthly heartache between my wife and I when another pregnancy test was negative. The decision to go ahead with IVF was made considerably easier thanks to my grandmother who offered to cover the cost of treatment after seeing us at a family wedding with no children and asking why. No, it wasn’t a choice. Yes, we know we’re getting older. Thanks for the advice. Fortunately, my Nana wasn’t just full of advice, she also had a solution – possibility the most incredible gift anyone can give another. So we started in the journey of injections, tests and an excitement that we were actually able to do something after years of frustrating inaction and a lack of the answers we craved. Moments before my part of the deal, my wife had eight eggs sucked from inside her and put on a dish. I sat next to her and watched it thinking once again us blokes definitely got the better end of the deal. Two days later we hit the jackpot, six of the eggs were in superb condition. Sarah could head back down in a few weeks and have one inserted [I still haven’t found the right word to describe that] inside her. All was going well until our sevenweek scan. The same scan that had tripped us up twice before. Once again heartache. It hadn’t survived. I lack a deep enough understanding of the English language to fully describe the feeling. But imagine being in a sterile room and sitting on a chair next to a bed, on top of the bed is your wife laying in the
most vulnerable of positions. Now picture looking at a screen with an empty circle displayed on it, a circle that should contain the beginnings of your child. Your thoughts immediately turn to your wife, who at this stage has been unable to contain her grief. You kiss her forehead. You hold her hand. You try to hug her but the angle is too awkward to manage it properly. The person doing the scan leaves the room and you’re left to try to gather your thoughts. All this with a pain in your stomach that feels like Mike Tyson landed a jab while you were looking the other way. You leave the building and [because it’s Nelson] you catch a glimpse of someone you know on your way to the car. You’re holding your wife as she sobs uncontrollably. The drive home is agonizing. It isn’t fair. At home you help your wife into bed where she curls up in a ball. Then you walk to the lounge and for the first time, you cry yourself. Then you have to start texting those closest to you and the thought of their reactions makes it hurt even more. In short, it sucks. But we were lucky. We had another five good eggs. So when the time was right Sarah headed back to Christchurch and had another inserted. Seven weeks later we headed back for another scan, shaking and expecting the worst. We got into the room, the gel went on her stomach, the image appeared on the big screen and there it was! A blob! It was a blob with a heartbeat. It was there!!!!!! We couldn’t believe it, I scrambled to confirm a million questions with the lady doing the scan. Is that normal? Is it ok? Does that mean we’re pregnant? It was a wave of euphoria. Incredible. We went through our usual ritual, a kiss on the forehead, holding the hand, the awkward hug. But this time the tears were of joy. We were able to tell our families the good news on Christmas Day, including my shell-shocked Nana. It was an incredible moment but as I’d soon find out, it was just the start. I sort-of figured that the father’s role would be sidelined until it actually came along – I was wrong.

Former Waimea College netball player and Mainland Tactix defender Zoe Walker hopes the nerves of playing in front of her home town will have finally calmed by this Sunday. Zoe and the Christchurch-based Tactix will play the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in the ANZ trans-Tasman Netball Championship, at the Trafalgar Centre on Sunday afternoon. Zoe says playing at the home, in front of friends and family, was initially daunting. “I actually made my debut for the Tactic against WBOP at the Trafalgar Centre in 2013 and I can remember not being able to do a full lunge because I was nervous and my knees were shaking.” The usually-underwhelming Tactix have already beaten two New Zea-

Phil Costley runs himself into NZ record books Jacob Page Richmond runner and Nelson College maths teacher Phil Costley has earned a unique national distinction. Thanks to victory in the New Zealand 100km Championships at Christchurch’s Hagley Park last week, Phil has won national titles at every distance from 3000m to 100km. The 46-year-old has held 33 New Zealand titles all up in almost everything you could imagine for running. It is all the more impressive considering the 46-year-old never won a running race at high school. He’s won six 12km cross country titles, five 3000m steeplechase crowns, four half marathons and three marathon titles, just to name a few. He’s earned 104 provincial running titles. He collected his first national title in 1994 but had to wait a while to taste
success. “I started racing at 18 or 19-years-old and I thought to myself ‘I just want to win a medal – I wanted something to show for the effort I put in, but I went home empty-handed. “I got my first medal, a bronze in 1993, but I thought it would be nice to win, so the next year I went back and won and the whole thing progressed from there.” Phil stuck at it and the national titles kept coming to the point where he began to wonder which ones he hadn’t got. “The last one felt like the 10,000m title I won in 2008 but then I began to wonder if I could extend it by getting the 100km title because I don’t have the speed to win them over the shorter distances.” That day came last Sunday when Phil completed 50 laps of Hagley Park. Phil says he runs with a high tempo and challenges runners to catch
him. “I’ve grown to accept that I can go to that deep dark place in your head and stay there longer and endure the pain longer than most when I’m running and I think that’s how I win most of my races.” Phil has run almost every day for his entire adult life. He runs from Richmond to Nelson College and back every day, “I do it because I enjoy it, because I know those same people who walk to and from work and I like saying hello to them. “Plus, it only takes me 10 minutes longer to get home than it would in a car during peak traffic. “To me, running is thinking time, I can go on auto-pilot and just think about my school classes.” The most national titles by a Kiwi athlete is 37, but Phil does not expect to eclipse that.

His coach and father, Dion Hall, says he was happy with how natural Iwi looked in the ring with his movement and balance. Fellow Whakatu boxer Luca Orlowski lost to Burnham’s Thomas Harvey in a points decision. Dion says Luca had his moments in what was a keenly contested bout.
Richmond keep winning, Suburbs battle back Jacob Page Richmond Athletic have maintained their unbeaten run in the top flight of Nelson Bays Football with a 2-0 win over Sprig and Fern Tahuna on Saturday. FreshChoice Richmond continued their march towards a championship while maintaining a six point advantage over the rest of the competition.
Richmond again proved how lethal they are late in the piece with two second half goals. Nelson Suburbs First XI couldn't halt their downward slide, losing 6-0 to the Marlborough Mariners. FC Nelson and Nelson College played out a 1-1 draw. Suburbs Seals kept themselves in the hunt with a 2-0 away win over Pomeroy's Wakefield.
Nelson Suburbs showed plenty of heart to come from 2-0 down to beat FC Twenty11 5-3 in their Mainland Premier League match at Saxton Field on Sunday. Campbell Banks and Max Winterton each scored twice as the hosts overcame a terrible start where they leaked two early goals. It was Matt Tod-Smith's goal on the eve of halftime which got

Nelson made sure they celebrated Andrew Goodman’s 100th senior game in style with an 80-7 Tasman Trophy rugby romp over Kaikoura’s East Coast at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. The veteran No 10 was one of three players to score twice in the 12-try demolition as Galbraith Nelson lifted themselves into the top four of the Tasman Trophy. Fullback Tima Faingaanuku and No 8 Dave Egelstaff also dotted down twice as Nelson earned a bonus point before halftime. Halfback Jackson Harvey kicked 10 conversions and scored a try for a personal points haul of 25. Nelson coach Kade Heke says his team is benefiting from having a number of frontline players returning from injury. He says the positive, up-tempo style of game meant they got the bounce of the ball at times which also helped the score blow-out. “When you have a win like that you look at individual areas of the game that went well and I think our defence and line speed was excellent. “The key is to keep the guys focussed and grounded after a win like that.” Kade reserved special praise for Andrew’s involvement in the team. “Andrew’s definitely the calm head amongst it all,” Kade says. “To have a guy with all the professional experience that

Nelson hosts old and new players at club day The Nelson Rugby Club held its Club Day on Saturday with junior players getting a taste of what it’s like to play on Trafalgar Park and the seniors putting up a cricket score against East Coast. Marist edged Waitohi 31-24, Kahurangi got a vital 17-11 road win over Renwick and Harlequins beat Freeman Roofing Stoke 27-20. Waimea Old Boys got past Central 3622 thanks largely to 24 points from Dylan Fletcher. In Division Two: Stoke beat Tapawera/Murchison 47-0, Waimea Old Boys powered past Riwaka 23-12, Collingwood were too strong for Nelson 43-15, Marist edged Takaka 18-16 and Huia downed Rangers 58-20.

Nelson Giants coach Tim Fanning says this Friday’s NBL clash with the Southland Sharks at the Trafalgar Centre is a must win. “There’s no other way of looking at it, it’s a must win game if we want to make the playoffs. After a one win, one loss road trip, the Giants are clinging to fourth by points differential but have played an extra game than the fifth-placed Sharks. “Our
season, so finding those points from other players, may shift the focus back to veteran Phill Jones, Fanning says his players will always back their ability to win a home game. “I think if you told this group of guys they had to win a home game for a playoff spot, they would have signed off on that." Tim says the parity in the league this year means his team has to turn up and produce a 40 minute performance, otherwise they will be beaten. The game tips off at 7pm.
