A bid to keep NZ Classic Motorcycles in Nelson has failed, with the announcement that the multi-million motorbike collection has found a new permanent home in Invercargill. The Tom Sturgess-owned collection of close to 300 motorcycles has been purchased by Jocelyn and Scott O’Donnell, directors of Bill Richardson Transport World in Invercargill, and will be housed in the city’s CBD. The Haven Rd museum closed its doors to the public in April, following an announcement from Tom in February that the closure was a result of his recent illness. Adrian Curtis, manager of Tyres and More in Nelson, had been on a mission to gather support to keep the collection in Nelson, and although he says it’s a shame to see it go, he’s happy to see it stay in New Zealand. “I’m disappointed for Nelson, but you’d have to argue that it’s a great day for New Zealand to have it retained here,” he says. “We may have entered into it a bit late, but after a really good start our

The highly-infectious measles are in Nelson, after a local teenager contracted it in Hamilton and flew it home last week. Medical Officer of Health Ed Kiddle says that the Nelson Marlborough Health Public Health Service has been following up people who had been in contact with the teenager to advise any risk of measles to them.

“Given the outbreak in Hamilton and the confirmation of a case of measles down here, people need to ensure they are protected through vaccination.” Measles is highly-infectious to non-immune people. Ed says that people born before 1969, and people who have had two doses of the MMR vaccine, are almost certainly immune to measles.

received, but it was Tom’s wish that the collection remain in New Zealand, and the move to Invercargill was the best outcome for the country. “I am sure Invercargill will receive as much enjoyment and make as many new friends as we have,” says Tom.

The Websters have already applied for holiday visas to Australia in case they have to leave on Friday. “As of right now, we have been ordered to leave New Zealand by Friday or we are liable to being arrested, incarcerated and deported. We’ve got to hop out of the country and they may not let us back in. So we’ve got a business that will just collapse, all our life savings will be lost because we won’t be able to sell it in six weeks,” says Steve. “We just want some common sense on this.” The Websters are hoping their last-ditch efforts will be enough to keep them in the country they love.

The Warehouse is working to remove alcohol-labelled wine-gums from their shelves, after receiving several complaints about the confectionary being “inappropriate” for children. A Nelson Weekly reader sent in a photo of the wine-gums, after purchasing them from The Warehouse Richmond to go in ‘goody bags’ for her son’s fifth birthday party. But she soon changed her mind after taking a closer look at the writing. Despite their name, the wine-gums contain no wine – but the brightly coloured sweets are branded with the names of alcoholic drinks, including brandy, vodka, gin, rum and port. A spokesperson from The Warehouse says they are “aware of the issue” and confirmed that the wine-gums certainly do not contain any alcohol.

Approval granted for bait drop Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

BREWERY KITCHEN & BAR

A controversial plan to drop poisonous bait into the Brook Sanctuary has been given the go-ahead, with the decision bringing mixed reactions from local groups. The sanctuary was granted resource consent last Wednesday to aerially drop up to 26.5 tonnes of cereal bait as part of their pest-eradication project, with the aim to wipe out mice, rats, possums, stoats, pigs, goats and deer. It is the latest step in their long-term plan to create a pest-free habitat in Nelson. But the bait, which contains Brodifacoum, a toxin manufactured for eradicating mammalian pests and is found in domestic rodent bait, has caused protest from several local groups in Nelson, including The Brook Valley Community Group, who are currently investigating appealing the decision. Chairman of the group, Christopher St Johanser, says the decision “is a bad one”. “We feel let down,” he says. “The prospect of the wholesale poisoning of our watershed is abhorrent to residents, and the proposed slaughter of all vertebrates in the council-owned reserve is

The trust behind the sanctuary has been given permission to drop bait to kill pests within its pest-proof fence. despicable.” SPCA animal welfare inspector, Nicola Blasdale also says she is “certainly disappointed” with the result. The SPCA sent a submission into Nelson City Council opposing the drop, saying the poisoning was “inhumane” and wanted the sanctuary to opt for a more gentle method of pest control. But general manager of the sanctuary, Hudson Dodd, says the bait, which is unattractive to a number of native species, is the only toxin available in New Zealand that can fully eradicate introduced pests, and in the 26.5 tonnes of bait they will drop, only a tiny fraction of it contains Brodifacoum – an amount he says is equivalent to a pound

of butter. Hudson also says the resource consent comes with a list of 47 conditions to meet the concerns of affected parties. “Many of the consent conditions are in line, or stricter than, the code of practice, which will give comfort to the community,” he says. He also says the trust will be fully transparent about the process as it moves forward. The eradication process will involve three aerial drops of the bait, as well as hand-baiting. Hudson says they are on track to start baiting between July and September this year, but no firm dates have been set yet.

Grant Smithies to host a 'wake for Prince'

Andrew Board

Purple rain will soak Nelson’s DeVille Café dance floor later this month when DJ-supreme Grant Smithies will bust out his 40-record Prince collection to pay his respects to the music legend. Grant was in Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco when news of Prince’s death was announced last month. He says he was in a record store in the epicentre of the hippy movement when he received a text message from home about the death. “I had no idea. I texted back saying 'dude, what are you talking about'. It wasn’t until a guy came in and picked up this whole bunch of Prince records. I went up to the guy behind the counter and said ‘what’s the story’, and he said Prince had just died and that the same thing happened when Michael Jackson died. People just bought them en masse as a kind of memento, I suppose.” Grant’s Prince collection goes back decades and includes many single EP’s as well as his most famous records. In his job as a music reviewer for the Sunday Star Times, Grant

went to see Prince’s first – and as it turns out, only – New Zealand show in Auckland a month before he died. He says he was blown away. “I heard some people say they weren’t going to go because he didn’t have a band, it was just him and a piano. But he had 3000 people up screaming and stomping along. It was a s..t-hot show.” Upon Grant’s return to Nelson he says he kept running into people suggesting a gig based on Prince’s music. “So it seemed like a good idea to do, like, a wake. To actually go along and play some great Prince records, but not just Prince, but other funk and soul charters around the same time.” He says he’s already had plenty of interest. “It will be a good opportunity for people who were big fans to come along and do some marginal dance moves to these various tunes. For me, Prince was the guy who owned the 80s and you can often forget how great loads of those tunes are, so it will be great to hear them in succession.” The party will be called Purple Rain and held on May 28 at DeVille Café. Tickets are $20 and can be bought from DeVille.

Natureland owner puts hand up for spot on council Natureland’s Mike Rutledge has announced he is standing for council in this year’s local elections. Before becoming a trustee of the Natureland Wildlife Trust two-and-a-half years ago, Mike was the Tui Brand Manager at DB Breweries, and Mike helped develop their Rutledge. well-known ‘Catch a Million’ and ‘Beer Plumber’ promotions. Kate Russell Support for new parents in Nelson has been made even more accessible, thanks to a donation to the Nelson District Parents Centre. A $6000 grant from the Nelson Bays Community Foundation (NBCF) means that the Parents Centre will be able to offer their Baby & You course to new mums in the region for free, for the rest of the year. The course is normally $40 for non-members. The NBCF formed a partnership with the Tindall Foundation last year aimed at supporting the family and social services sector across the top of the South Island. They announced their first funding round last month of four donations, totalling $28,000. Established in 1977, the Parents Centre is run by volunteers with the aim of helping new parents be the best they can through education and support. As well as offering a range of post-natal courses, they also run childbirth classes and guest speakers, such as the Nathan MikaereWallis Tween evening this

Michelle Hunt from the Nelson District Parents Centre, outside the Masonic Lodge where their Baby & You course is run from. Photo: Kate Russell. Thursday night. The six-week long Baby & You course is a must-do for anyone new to parenthood, covering topics such as sleeping and feeding issues, baby wearing, when to call the doctor, baby massage and active movement. But more importantly, it helps to get new mums out of the house and to stay connected. Michelle Hunt from the Parents Centre says it's "fantastic" that they can now offer the course for free. "Getting this grant has been

the highlight of our year," she says. "There are so many things you don’t learn about, and don’t know about, until after you have had a baby. New parents need that support during those first few months, and the course also gives people a chance to meet other parents." Michelle says they are also hoping to run a Baby & You course for refugee families, if they can get a translator on board. Chair of the NBCF, Julie Varney, says the focus of the

Parents Centre was "a very good fit" with the funding priorities of their Family and Social Services programme. "A key component of the Parents Centre is to support families, not only with education prior to having a baby, but also in the months after the birth. We know that this time is a major adjustment for families," she says. "The education and input that the Parents Centre provides is key to helping families make that adjustment and this funding will ensure that all families wanting to have access to this service are able to do so." The next round under the funding partnership closes 16 August, 2016, and details of the application criteria can be found on tindall.org. nz and nbcf.org.nz. Nelson District Parents Centre run their Baby & You course six times a year, with the next one starting 19th May. After that, courses run from 14th July, 8th September and 3rd November. A tribe of business owners unite Kate Russell

A newly-established woman's business collective is taking on Nelson one business at a time, with a vision to inspire, connect, support and share. Established in January by Nelson life coach Caron Proctor, the group, called TRIBE, has 46 members from a broad range of professions – and they are still welcoming new ladies. Caron says TRIBE is an idea that grew into something very big, very quickly, and she has been blown away with the amount of

interest in the group. “I saw a need for a woman's business collective in Nelson, so I sent an email to a few of my clients in January – and by mid-February we had our first meeting with 36 members,” she says. The group meets monthly, out of valuable working hours. The meetings are relaxed and include guest speakers, and give people the opportunity to socialise with likeminded people. Members also connect and support each other through a dedicated Facebook group. Caron says she wanted to bring together a collection of woman working together for

the benefit of each other, rather than being in competition with each other. Each member brings individual skills to TRIBE – from a personal trainer, a photographer, a travel broker, and a midwife, there is a huge amount of combined skill and knowledge in this collaborative. Nelson florist Rosie Seek has been part of TRIBE since the beginning, and says it has been one of the best things she has done for business - and herself personally. "I've been in other business groups which weren't very user-friendly for an owner/ operator. I run the shop by myself, so it's

easy to get stuck in my own little box," she says. "This group has been great, I now have an amazing group of ladies to bounce ideas around with." Caron says that unlike many other business groups, TRIBE is focused on the collaboration and inspiration of the group. “There is a 'no pressure' rule regarding referrals and our belief is 'if you like me and my business, then you will recommend me naturally',” she says. If you are interested in finding out more about TRIBE or joining the group, you can visit the website at: yourtribe.net.

Mall Chat It’s been a busy time in Richmond Mall over the past month with school holidays and Mother’s Day promotions coming to a close but it’s set to get even busier, with two huge promotions on the way. Read below for more details or pop in and see us at Richmond Mall. • Our Mother’s Day promotion winner was Brooke Cassidy. She won $3000 worth of small appliances. She was very excited and I was very jealous!

Personal story behind Hospice support When the Nelson/Tasman Hospice approached Houston Motor Group marketing and fleet consultant Donna Brookland about getting a new car, it struck a personal note with her. Donna’s mum died six weeks ago and spent time in the hospice, so Donna was keen to assist. “I thought this way a way that I could help and I’m sure it’s something Mum would have wanted. “The nurses and everyone there were so good to deal with, so I was happy to help. Nelson/Tasman Hospice now have a Mitsubishi Mirage with the support of the Houston Motor Group.

• Our school holidays promotion with black boards and box making sessions were really popular. We had a lot of kids come down and spend time on them so we’re really happy with the turn out.

• This week we are doing a Facebook promotion. We have five Super Rugby jerseys to give away, one from each of the New Zealand teams. To win a jersey, customers just need to put their name and phone number on the back of a receipt and put it into the entry boxes in the Mall. The promotion runs from May 16 – May 30. Any receipt, any amount. Just write the jersey you want to win and your details. • Now this is a biggie. From June 6 to June 26 we are doing our Scratch and Win competition. Customers just need to spend $120 in a single transaction at any store, excluding supermarkets. Go to the information desk with the receipt and swap it for a scratchy and you will instantly win. Everyone will win something! I’ve budgeted $20,000 worth of prizes, and every single scratchy is a winning ticket. Prizes include coffeestore vouchers, $5 logo offer excludes sabelle and cost of automation. vouchers, $10 vouchers and spot prizes from retailers.

Thanks: Just wanted to say thank you to Nelson Weekly for running the piece about our Artisan Market. We got a great turn out, I'm sure partly as a result, and were able to raise $1200 profit for the Spirit of Adventure Tasman Trust and for local charities such as Hospice. You must be really busy, it's amazing and wonderful you find the time to help organisations like ours. Monica Pausina, Nelson Lioness Club.

The Southern Link will just move the traffic, not fix it, and create environmental issues. Instead, create clearways during peak hours on Waimea Rd (no parking on the city bound side between 8am and 9am to create two city-bound lanes and then on the outbound side between 4pm and 6pm). Put in designated bus lanes and improve public transport. Arnie Raddock.

Thank you for sharing your story. I was very touched by your words, and felt for you through the sadness, happiness and hope. I don't like to think that future articles will only be online. Many folk may relate to your experiences - there may even be grandmothers out there who will be inspired to help make dreams come true. Lynda Fitzgerald.

Memorial near Brook Sanctuary: I read Harry Pearson's letter in last week's Weekly and thoroughly agree - it's a great bit of Nelson's history. I had heard about the memorial but had never found it. I was doing my bit at the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Visitors Centre May 8 and was taken up to it by someone who I assume was Harry. He said it could do with a cleanup and a bit of signage. A couple of other visitors that afternoon had already said they had swum in the pool/ reservoir by the memorial when they were kids. I emailed the council and they are going to give it a clean-up and, hopefully, put in a sign and some information. This sort of thing makes a big difference to a city as a community with roots, rather than just treating it as a bunch of buildings, roads and drains. Tom Taylor.

Clearly, the people that think that this does not need to go ahead have half a brain. Comparing Nelson to overseas has no relevance to our problem. Dominick Unterberger.

think it is their role to decide which mail should be delivered, and to withhold mail properly addressed and legally posted. Judith Harper.

Yes, Southern Link needs to go ahead, otherwise Nelson will be swamped with commuters. Sheralee Taylor.

Go look at plans, the link would go through Nelson Intermediate School, Victory Primary School and Victory Community Centre, and Auckland Point School. Plus all the houses along the way. We don't need this. Wendy Brydon.

Referendum for Southern Link: Pete Rainey’s proposal for a referendum on the Southern Link is a great idea, but motivated for political reasons. His previous anti-Link stance was going to cost him a lot of votes. He has agreed in the past that it’s important to be transparent. So why not also have a referendum on the Performing Arts Centre? This expensive prospect is now back on the agenda, after Pete put the cost of a new report into the current Annual Plan. This would be in addition to the 1200 seat theatre that council is going to fund at the Trafalgar Centre. In the past Pete has avoided a referendum, apparently for fear he would lose. But council has already wasted over a million dollars investigating this possibility. It’s high time the matter was settled. Dan McGuire.

Business breakfast to raise cash for helicopter It was the breakfast with a difference that brought sports stars and business leaders to town – now it will be known as the breakfast that makes a difference. The Big Brekkie was run several times a year by the Business Breakfast Club, which hosted a fortnightly breakfast meeting. But founder of the breakfast club, Wayne Densem, says interest in their fortnightly breakfasts was waning so it took the opportunity to reassess. “We started the Business Break-

fast Club in August 2013 and during that time we developed the Big Brekkie idea, and we found that was a very good way of reaching our goals which in those days were to inspire, educate and entertain business and professional people; to raise money for our charity, and the third was to give benefit to members who paid a fee to belong to the business breakfast club. “At the end of last year we just found that it was getting harder to get people to attend the fort-

nightly meetings. So we held everything back and said, 'what do we actually want to achieve'.” Wayne says there were two things on the list: inspire business people and raise money for charity. “So, at that point, we decided to forget about the fortnightly meetings, create a charitable trust and just put on four big brekkies a year and do the odd workshop,

which we will run as a separate thing from the Big Brekkie.” Four trustees have been appointed and the first Big Brekkie under the new system will be held next Thursday, May 26. Coming to speak is “the telephone man” Matthew Mewse, who gives tips on how to use a phone for business. Also speaking is “the word wizard” Lynnaire Johnston, who will give some ideas on business writing. The event will also host an auction where mayors Rachel Reese

and Richard Kempthorne have each donated two, one hour blocks of their time to be raffled off. Wayne says all money raised will be donated to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, their chosen charity for the first two years. Tickets for the event at the Rutherford Hotel are $49 and include a breakfast as well as listening to the speakers. The brekkie runs from 7am to 9am and tickets can be bought from www.businessbreakfastclub.co.nz

Memorial Ball, Tuesday, April 26: The memorial ball for local dancer Claire Morgan was “amazing,” says her mother Sandra Maxfield. Over 120 people attended, including nondancing friends of Claire’s who gave it their best shot on the dance floor. Sandra and organiser Pauline Harris also wish to thank those who helped set up the hall. As well as remembering the life of Claire, who passed away in 2014, the ball also aimed to raise money for the Nelson Tasman Hospice. Thanks to those who attended, the ball managed to raise $2400, which Sandra and Claire are proud to be able to donate to such a worthy organisation. WW1 Stories, Tuesday, May 10: The Nelson genealogists who are looking for people to submit their families stories of service men and women from around the region who served in World War 1 have received enquiries, but are still keen to see some complete stories. Stoke Badminton Club turning 50 VALUE SELECTION Jacob Page

2006 ToyoTA AVeNsIs

Kaye Gowans and Vonnie Turipa have been constants at the Stoke Badminton Club which celebrates its 50th Anniversary on Thursday. Life member Kaye has been an active member for 37 years and Vonnie, who now looks after the club on a day-to-day basis, has been part of the action for 22 years. When Kaye first joined club, members were limited to just 100 because of the size of the Stoke Memorial Hall, where the club is still based today. “We were turning people away and there were discussions with the Nelson City Council about extending the hall, but thankfully that didn’t happen because numbers have declined over time. The club used to hold three day badminton events instead of two, just to keep up with demand. The club now boasts 40 members and is more casual than competitive these days. “Originally, the club was established for mothers who wanted to have a quick game and bring their children. Interclub days were held with other badminton clubs around

The club meets on a Thursday morning for several hours and Vonnie says it is the friendships that keep her coming back. “The people I’ve met, the long time friendships I have because of this club, are what are so special. “We still have one of the best facilities going and this hall has become very important to us as a club.” The club has six members, and

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Q: My son’s birthday party is

coming up and I’m worried about the cost. Do you have you any suggestions? A: Keeping up with pricy expectations takes the fun out of parties. Most parents struggle with the costs. Give yourself permission to have a great party on a budget. Try these suggestions:  Birthday parties are not a competitive event; don’t buy into the idea of ‘keeping up with the Jones’s’.  Work out how much you can afford and stick to it.  Get your child involved in planning their party. With the budget you have set, your child can make decisions about what they want and what they will forgo.  DIY as much as possible: cake, food, games and cheap entertainment (eg. DVD hire)  Ask guests for a gold coin instead of a present OR set a price limit on gifts. Your child will get some cash/gifts and other parents will thank you!  Forgo the elaborate goodie bags - the contents quickly get discarded.  An extra piece of cake is a nice treat for guests to take home. Celebrating your child’s special day does not require a lot of money. Reduce your stress by having a party you can afford without struggling. Your example could help reduce pressure on other parents too.

For over 20 years Vistalite Richmond has been a trusted name in aluminium windows, doors and conservatories and retro fit double glazing. While new owners Rod Satherley and Helen Petterson may not yet be experts in manufacturing such products, they do have a background owning, operating and managing other businesses within the local area and are looking forward to continuing the professional service, competitive prices and quality products that people associate with the Vistalite brand. Rod is well known in the Nelson and Richmond district, previously owning and running several corner dairies and lotto outlets. Haven Road Dairy won Top Shop 2000 under his ownership. While Helen has a long dairy farming background, she has training in floristry, vet nursing and dental assisting too. More recently Rod was working as an account manager for Hynds Pipe Systems, supplying companies such as Downers and Fulton Hogan, until he took over ownership of Vistalite in April this year. “I just liked the thought of getting back in to a nice small business and doing something for myself again,” says Rod. Although Rod has only been at the helm of the locally owned and operated business

for just under two months, he has already noticed the huge amount of repeat work that Vistalite receives, thanks to the dedication of previous owner Trevor Norris, who had the business for 25 years, and the professional team. Rod believes his past role as accounts manager has given him the skills to take on Vistalite Richmond and is keen to learn the nuts and bolts of the business so he can maintain the reputable name that Trevor successfully achieved. When it comes to their services, the Vistalite team are dedicated to helping you find the best window and door solutions for your home and there’s no job too big or too small. If you’re building new, adding to your home or renovating an existing space, Vistalite Richmond has a comprehensive range of products that will suit your lifestyle and enhance your design. From curved windows, bay windows and opening skylights, to sliding or stacker doors, panel or French doors and much more, the team will custom create the perfect window or door solutions, including a free measure and quote on site. Equipped and keen to take on any size job, even if it’s as simple as replacing rollers on a sliding door to whole house lots, Vistalite Richmond are proud to be a small team

When it comes to installation of a new window or door, the team is more than happy to do the job themselves or use the skills of some of the local, qualified builders that they are aligned with. They’re also happy to act solely as a supplier if their clients have a preferred building company to take on the task. Conservatories are another area that Vistalite excels in, creating a whole new living area for your home that can provide you with a warm and sunny haven in winter. Vistalite Richmond will help you choose the perfect conservatory, produced in their factory with guaranteed quality. Their skills in double glazing will also come in hand during winter with the Vistalite Richmond team capable of retro fitting double glazing (even a window or two at a time) to any existing joinery, be it wooden or aluminium. Nelson Bays Church (NBC) is committed to making a difference in Nelson, and new church leaders Mark and Colette Meeske are delighted to be leading the congregation in this pursuit. Their background in the ministry includes 23 years of leading and pastoring in different churches in South Africa and, after being invited to transition the church with the current leadership at NBC, Mark and Colette Meeske Mark and Colette arrived in Nelson in midDecember last year with their two sons. They are excited to see the church advance the Kingdom of God in this region. Nelson Bays Church currently accommodates several community groups, church-based activities and their regular meetings on Sunday mornings, including a children’s programme. Mark and Colette say their church takes an interest in the needs of the Nelson community and is a safe place for those in crisis. More of a family than a group of parishioners, Nelson Bays Church is always open for those seeking advice or support and Mark and Colette look forward to helping in anyway they can. Owned and operated by experienced qualified arborist and horticulturalist Nick Chambers, Atom Tree Specialists is a fresh new business catering to the Nelson region. Nick is proud to be bringing his skills in the industry to his own business, utilising over 20 years of knowledge to help local clients care for and maintain their trees. Nick has always had a passion for trees and the physical challenge of the job, which has seen him work not just in New Zealand, but in Australia, England and Ireland. When it comes to the somewhat unusual name, it was his family roots in Brightwater and the village's tie to Ernest Rutherford that inspired Nick to establish Atom Tree Specialists. Using the latest tree surgery techniques and equipment, Nick ensures your trees are cared for and maintained with minimal disruption to you, your trees and their surroundings. His services include professional tree care, tree felling, tree consultancy, small and large scale tree planting, stump grinding and cable bracing. For more information or to arrange a free quote, give Atom Tree Specialists a call today on 021 0236 5417 or email info@atomtreespecialists.co.nz The Children’s Garden is a brand new centre that has the best interests of both the parents and children at heart. Centrally located between Nelson and Richmond on nearly a quarter acre of established grounds, The Children’s Garden is able to provide full care and education for children up to five years of age. Well respected and experienced centre principal Natasha Kibble and her team completed a meticulous rebuild Natasha Kibble and restoration of The Children’s Garden premises, in order to provide quality learning and care within a beautiful, harmonious centre. The Children’s Garden also offers small group care for infants, creating an intimate environment with just 10 spaces available. Nelson's most experienced Property Managers From small beginnings, Summit Property Management is now the largest and longest-established specialist property management company in the region. Over 24 years ago we began operating in Stoke, then over the years expanded into Nelson City and, backed by Stewart Henry who has over 30 years in the industry, opened outlets in Richmond, Motueka and Marlborough. Having local property managers in each area is a definite advantage to us and our clients; we are there when we are needed. The keys to making our property management business successful have been having strong business systems, strict control on who we place into properties and a zero tolerance to rent arrears. A strong focus on providing what our landlord clients expect from a professional property manager brought out the need for frequent communication, and we have always been hot on honest feedback. We care about our reputation so our clients know that we will look after them and their investment. Best of all, we don’t have any add-on fees.

Celebrating 20 years in business The company is a tried and trusted childcare provider that has always offered children a warm, homely environment in which to learn and develop. Established in 1996 by four local women, the company set up Jill Taylor Maree Claridge in the Anchor Inn building at Founders Park. A second centre was established in Tasman St in 2001. Following amalgamation in 2010, Busy Bees was created. Jill Taylor became the sole owner and director in 2011, and in 2014 welcomed Maree Claridge as co-director. Busy Bees vision is to provide excellent care and education, allowing children of all ages to play and learn. Busy Bees is a mixed age centre and offers families the opportunity to have siblings stay together until they reach primary school. The centre is also proud of their enthusiastic and qualified team of four full-time teachers. Busy Bees values the relationship made between staff, children and their families, and is committed to reflecting and welcoming the multicultural nature of Nelson.

The Nelson Racecourse successfully operated at the Stoke site for nearly 30 years with the addition of a handsome two-storey grandstand until the Nelson-tonowhere railway began, with the

line cutting straight through the track in 1873. After a few years of covering the railway line with sawdust each race day to preserve the event, the Nelson Jockey Club sold up and moved to its present track in Richmond.

A grant from the Waimea Soroptimist Club is "making all the difference" for a young Nelson mum who is studying for a Bachelor of Nursing and raising three young boys. Kimberley Watt, 27, decided she wanted to become a nurse two years ago and enrolled in the Certificate in Foundation Nursing course at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. She continued her studies last year when she started a Bachelor of Nursing and is now in her third year at NMIT, although she concedes it hasn't been easy returning to the classroom. "I left school at 15 and starting working full-time," Kimberley says. "I'd been working ever since, in between having three children, before I decided I wanted to become a nurse. "I wanted to do something that helped people and helped them feel more comfortable when things weren't going well for them. I'm really enjoying the course but it's been a struggle looking after my children and

Bridie runs herself to 21st in Hungary

Former Phoenix striker Paul Ifill and football commentator Jason Pine will also be in attendance. The children’s coaching clinic from 4pm to 5.30pm costs $5 with the book launch evening costing $10. Bridie Edwards took up running at 13 as a way to get fit for the netball season, three years later and she has represented New Zealand at the World Schools’ Cross Country Championships in Hungary. The 16-year-old finished 21st out of more than 70 competitors from 20 countries in the international 3km race, in a time just over 11 minutes. “My goal was to do the best I could and I was really happy with 21st.” Her first international event came with a week-long training camp with the New Zealand team at London’s Hyde Park. Despite her success on the world stage just a matter of weeks ago, Bridie was not brimming with confidence about winning the Waimea College cross Country this week. “There is quite a fast girl who has transferred to my school so it should be a good race. “I started running when I was in Year 8 to get fit for netball and then I started to do well in my school cross country’s and I started to enjoy it. “I wasn’t very fit and I needed to change that for my sport and I got fourth in my school’s cross country and I thought ‘ok’, that’s pretty good’ and just kept going

Defiant Dempster refuses to make excuses Jacob Page Nelson Giants captain Sam Dempster cut a forlorn figure post-match, following his team’s potentially season-ending 91-85 defeat to the Southland Sharks at the Trafalgar Centre last Friday. There were no excuses given by the big centre, it was another case of a fast start and a midgame slump which had cost the Nelson franchise and left their top four hopes dangling by a thread. In the background sat injured star Finn Delany, on crutches, clearly in some discomfort but keen to point out his leg injury was “just a sprain, I’ll be back”. How they could have used him last Friday. The Giants blew a 23-point second quarter lead as they went cold late in the game yet again. “I’m disap-

a few three pointers early, a rare sight but a much-needed one. Then the second half came. Sharks big man

Alex Pledger dominated the rebounds and tight exchanges and the Giants attack, which looked so good to begin with, faded. “I don’t know why we are struggling in the middles of games, it is something we talk about but it keeps happening,” Sam says. “We stopped moving the ball well on offence and Alex Pledger got too much space and time and he’s a class player, you can’t do that. You can’t fall asleep in this league at any point or you’ll get hurt.” Sam defiantly says the season is not over. “We still have two more games and we need to keep battling and putting pressure on those teams above us.” The Giants will face the winless Hawke’s Bay Hawks on Saturday night at the Trafalgar Centre.

Waimea Old Boys blown away at home in Tasman Trophy Wanderers’ surge continued while Waimea Old Boys were humbled at home in the latest round of the Tasman Trophy Rugby competition. While Nelson teams continued to dominate their Marlborough neighbours, it was Waimea Old Boys’ 62-31 defeat at home to Waitohi which proved the biggest shock of the weekend. Star & Garter Waimea coach Mark Milne praised Waitohi’s preparation and attacking flair, while lamenting his own team’s lack of intensity. Taylors Wanderers continue to be the team to beat following a 44-25 victory over Harlequins in Blenheim. Jesse Pitman scored four tries for Wanderers in the win, which sees them stay 10 points ahead of nearest challenger Marist. Adam Dunn scored a double as Wakatu Hotel Marist eased past Renwick 48-20, while Kahurangi put in a strong second half showing and were buoyed by left winger Stein Schreiber’s three tries in a 4620 win. in the first half before they powered away in the second half over East Coast. Nelson eased past Moutere 22-20 for what could prove to be a crucial away win. Galbraith Nelson coach Kade Heke says, while his team was not at their best, their commitment “probably won us the game”. “It was an ugly old game and we dropped a lot of ball and left a few points out there, but we really battled in the first half just to stay in the game. “Moutere really took it to us and our forwards especially had to do a lot of work and front up. “It wasn’t pretty but it was a win that we needed ahead of two crucial games that will define how far we go in this competition.” Freeman Roofing Stoke took full advantage of playing at home as they downed Central 40-17. Chris Little, Alex Nankivell and Sam Chamberlain all scored three tries for the hosts.

SporTS FooTBaLL: The Tasman United women’s football team’s home game against FC Twenty11 on Saturday has had a change of kick off and will now begin at 3pm. The change was made to allow FC Twenty11 players and coaches more travel time to get to Nelson.

FooTBaLL: Richmond advanced to the next round of the Chatham Cup football competition with a 5-1 win over a gritty Wakefield team at Wakefield Domian on Saturday. In a shortened Nelson Bays division one round of games, Nelson College produced an upset by toppling 10-man Tahuna 4-2 and Suburbs Seals downed the Marlborough Mariners in Blenheim, 3-1.

Tahunanui Tennis Club upgrades two artificial courts Jacob Page The Tahunanui Tennis Club has relaid two of its four courts as it has one eye on its centenary in 2022. President John Lovelock says the club’s committee had been working on finding and implementing the plan for two years, and the courts were

officially opened on Saturday. John says it cost the club $51,000 to do but it was a good investment in the future. “The courts need replacing every 15 years and because we are on the main road, our courts get used a lot, especially the two furthest from the road that we have now upgraded.” The club’s new sand-based

artificial courts will allow its 65 members the best of facilities and also ensure junior players have the best chance to continue to improve their game. The club plays on a Saturday, but it is the popularity with junior players wanting coaching that causes the wear and tear on the courts.

NCg gold too strong for Marist gold SporTS Jacob Page

Nelson College for Girls Senior Gold proved too fit and fast for Marist Gold 29-14 at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. NCG had to overcome a slow start but, after trailing early, their superior ball movement and athleticism showed through. Shooting was an issue for both teams but NCG goal attack Fionia Brady grew during the game and her work outside the circle allowed her team more opportunities to score. Marist centre NgaireDawn Munro and her opposite Evie Walke had a good battle throughout the game. The extra height of the schoolgirls in the shoot-

was the main contributor and her shooting improved as the game went on. Marist Gold’s physicality initially paid dividends, but they faded as the game wore on. Nelson’s speed and ability to use a structured attack with width broke down Marist Gold’s resistance. A tight first half of the game ended and Nelson College for Girls ran away with the game to win by a more comfortable margin than seemed likely through the middle of the match. The school team showed plenty of spirit in the early season match-up and they adjusted well to playing adults the longer the game went on.

Netball: The Mainland Tactix had a last minute, one goal loss to the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic 58-57, in their ANZ Championship netball game at Nelson’s Trafalgar Centre on Sunday. The Tactix led for much of the game thanks to a 17-10 second quarter domination but couldn’t shake the visitors, who got the winning goal inside the final 30 seconds. Nelson’s Zoe Walker played three quarters for Tactix at goal defence and was instrumental in the strong second quarter her team had. Netball: Premier netball in Nelson begins at Saxton Stadium on Thursday night. In the two 6pm games; Richmond Glass face Prices Pharmacy Black and Jacks OPD battle Nelson College for Girls Senior A. Rugby: Nelson College made it three road wins in a row to start the Crusaders secondary schools rugby competition with a 39-10 win over Ashburton College in Ashburton. Waimea went down to St Bede’s 12-10, thanks to a last gasp try, at Waimea College. Nelson College will return home to face Christchurch Boys’ High School and Waimea travel to play Ashburton College. Rugby league: The Wanderers Wolves surged back from a halftime deficit to beat Blenheim’s Wairau Taniwha 42-30 in the Tasman Rugby League competition at Oliver Park. The league leaders trailed the home team 18-16 at the break but were far too strong in the second half, piling on 26 points. In the other match, the Tahunanui Tigers won an entertaining game against the Victory Phoenix 44-40 at Nelson Intermediate School.
