Walk in, walk out treatment, that’s

This bumper issue takes a look at the best new homes of 2020 showcasing the winners of the Registered Master Builder House of the Year Awards. Celebrating its 30th year, the House of the Year Awards featured a slightly different award ceremony due to Covid but still had an outstanding variety of homes enter. The regional awards were announced at the end of November and I’d like

to congratulate all of the craftspeople behind each of the stunning winning homes. This edition also features a wedding section to help engaged couples plan their special day. It’s been a funny old time for the wedding industry…but it’s a new year and what better time to get engaged or start planning a wedding that might have been postponed. Take a look at the local businesses on these pages — they would each love to help make your day perfect. The Nelson Mag is excited to continue our rapid growth as we head into 2021 and I’d especially like to thank all of our wonderful readers and advertisers who make this magazine what it is. Art Deco on Wheels

Jeff and Sandy are spending this summer holidaying in their caravan which Jeff built for Sandy.

Jeff Marshall and Sandy Edwards have raised the bar on summer holidays by the sea. Words: Tracy Neal

AIMEE CANE

A whole lotta love went into the build of the caravan as well as the interior which Sandy was the driving force behind.

T

his season the Nelson couple will be taking a trip down memory lane in their sleek, black art deco caravan built for two, by Jeff himself for his partner Sandy. What was meant to have been a fourmonth project turned into almost a year-long commitment to the fine art of re-creating a style reminiscent of the 1940s “canned ham” caravan with all its curves, soft angles and vintage fittings unique to the era. The caravan was rolled out of the shed just before Christmas, with the owners’ pride reflected in its polished black sides, blue and white fabric accents, and expertly crafted interior. Jeff, a panel beater and car enthusiast with a garage full of classics in the remake, built the caravan from scratch in the shed at home. There was barely enough room to move between all the other car projects, he says. The finishing touches, including brakes and essential works beneath the caravan were done on the hoist at the workshop where Jeff works. “I’ve been a panel beater since I left school. I’d never built a caravan, but I’ve done a lot of hot rods and restorations. “I have to say though, this has certainly pushed the boundaries a bit.” The caravan is brand-new, with only the occasional element scored secondhand — a piece of tin from the ceiling

of an old villa has been used to create a clever splash-back behind the galley; the vintage aluminium window frames were found at a garage sale and adapted to fit, the tail-lights from an old Hillman Super Minx car and others from an old Austin A55 now adorn the caravan.

Jeff says the framework was needed to compensate for the lack of wardrobes in the caravan — a feature that would normally provide structural strength.

Jeff drew inspiration from a caravan they spotted in the Early Settlers Museum in Dunedin.

The rest of the construction is timber, and reminiscent of the inside of a finely crafted boat. Jeff says the curved nature of art deco did present challenges, but he applied some boat building techniques for tackling the rounded edges.

“I’ve just always liked the shape and thought, ‘this will be easy to do — we’ll build one’!” The style also appealed to Sandy’s vintage senses, honed as a child when a favourite pastime was rummaging through secondhand stores. “I love antiques and collectables. My family would tell you lots of stories about various family holidays when I was a child. I’d go into stores and haggle to get a bargain.”

The effect is a lofty space inside what is a 2-metre wide by 4.2m long; and 1.9m high caravan.

Jeff says local boatbuilder and craftsman, Andre Ludwig, played a big part in achieving that. “Andre did the interior joinery and he’s done a beautiful job.” A local glass company cut the windows from a template Jeff made, and he says a friend helped fit them.

It’s also an homage to the growing trend of holidaying at home — the “Staycation”. “The way the world is now, with everyone holidaying in their own country, caravans have become much more desirable because they’re affordable,” Sandy says. Jeff built the caravan’s chassis from box-section steel and added steel framework for additional strength and to accommodate the pop-top lid — an essential feature for one of their sons who stands six-foot five inches tall.

The way the world is now, with everyone holidaying in their own country, caravans have become much more desirable because they’re affordable.

It has cost close to $30,000 to construct, fit out and complete — more than budgeted, much like most construction projects. One small complication was finding a way to keep down the weight. “I’ve put some really good high-density insulation in it because I am concerned that painting it black… it’s going to be like a hothouse.” Sandy, who works in mental health in Nelson, says Jeff worked almost around the clock to get it finished in time for summer. “He’s worked every night, his lunchtimes and every weekend.” She says to have it built especially for her is a tremendous gift. “I’ve been excited about this for a long time. We had another caravan before this, but this one is much more practical. “It’s a better weight and size for towing, and it’s an heirloom we’ll pass down to the children.”

It’s going to stay in the family — we’d never part with it and it’s going to last many years because everything’s been done so right with it.

An art deco pink lampshade is fitted on the wall and an old bus light is fitted above the caravan’s door — all activated by old-fashioned light switches driven by a solar-powered battery unit. Seating is blue and white striped squabs that reference the caravan’s strong coastal theme, and neatly contain the caravan’s portable loo.

but Tōtaranui beckons — Sandy’s favourite holiday spot. “I’ve been going to Tōtaranui every summer since I was a child and we used to take an old caravan, and a tent before that so we’ll certainly be taking it to Tōtaranui this summer.”

The lino flooring is a Cath Kidston classic in white with pink rosebuds.

Sandy hopes it will be the vehicle that eases them into a more relaxed phase of their lives.

Even the cutlery and crockery are vintage, stowed safely in a cupboard on non-slip matting.

“We really hope to spend a lot of time in this, especially as we head towards retirement in the next 10 years or so.

The caravan had its first outing at Christmas to the Marlborough Sounds,

“We’re hoping to do a lot of travelling over the next few years.”

The couple have four young adult children, who all grew up with summer holidays camped by the sea. “It’s going to stay in the family — we’d never part with it and it’s going to last many years because everything’s been done so right with it,” Sandy says. As the build took shape, Sandy began fossicking through second-hand stores and online sites to find exactly the right fittings for the caravan’s interior, which is an extension of their beautiful home in Tahunanui, decorated with an eye for the use of eclectics. “There are some really interesting old pieces in the caravan to try and keep its look from the 1940s/1950s era.” The white-lacquered kitchen unit features vintage handles and an old-fashioned tap over the galley sink. The compact refrigerator sits neatly in a cupboard next to the stove — just like on a small boat.

A Day in the Life of Ashley Belk

4pm 4:30pm

I listen to a podcast called Life Livers Academy. In my spare time throughout the day I enjoy reading or listening to podcasts about athletes and selfdevelopment. I don’t watch any TV but I do enjoy a good documentary or movie on Netflix every now and then.

5:30pm

A bit of admin then some time spent doing choreography in preparation to teach to my dancers.

Finish with some light training and stretching.

7pm

12pm

I grab some sushi for lunch on the go. I have no patience for cooking.

Sparring time at Victory Boxing. Get punched in the face. Do my best to beat up the boys. Sweat a lot and completely mess up my hair and makeup.

Head home for a quick and easy dinner. I have a big sweet tooth so it’s routine for me to have some chocolate for dessert.

8pm

11am

Visit my gym, Tasman Performance, for strength and conditioning. It’s a love/hate relationship.

Play some of my favourite music to get me in a good training mood while driving to Victory Boxing. Put my wraps and boxing boots on in the car and get mentally prepared.

Catch up on work, and housework, notice a big pile of washing to be done, but decide that it can wait until tomorrow.

11pm

9:30am

Chiropractor appointment with Adam from the Loveday Clinic. Once he’s cracked almost every joint in my body, I leave feeling brand new again.

1pm

Pic’s peanut butter on toast for breakfast. Then jump in the car and get a coffee from McDonald’s drivethrough. I do this every morning. Probably not the best place for an athlete to go, but nothing productive happens before my coffee! After my coffee I sit and listen to music in the car to set the vibe for the day. I’m not a morning person at all, so I like to ease into it.

2pm

8am

Ashley Belk is as comfortable in a boxing ring as she is on a dance floor. The Nelson woman recently won the 51kg elite women’s North Island Golden Gloves title but when she isn’t working on her jab or hook at Victory Boxing Gym, she’s teaching hip hop at Born&Raised, an academy she founded for talented hip hop dancers.

After half an hour or so, I eventually switch off and fall asleep.

Living for the day

At the age of 24, Georgie Ferris does not have much longer to live, but that is not stopping her living life to the fullest, Charles Anderson reports.

I

t was her party trick. When she was a teenager, Georgie Ferris would delight her friends by bending her legs over her head and rotating her arms almost all the way around her socket. She had always been that way. She had always been incredibly flexible. The other end of the spectrum was that Georgie also used to dislocate her knees and hips by accident. But that too did not seem that abnormal. Georgie didn’t think anything of it. The fact that she would also encounter other, severely debilitating health conditions, seemed like a separate issue. She would endure serious bowel obstructions which would later lead to full gastrointestinal failure. Her lungs and heart would also be later affected due to the complications of her fragile body. She would be hospitalised and stave off lifethreatening infections. But doctors did not know what was wrong with her. “I was blamed for having an eating disorder or a condition where your brain tells you are sick… I was a girl who was dislocating joints, had bowel obstructions and couldn’t process food. I know it didn’t make sense.” Some people thought Georgie was just seeking attention. They would say “just smile and get on with your life”. They would say “just keep eating and you will be fine”. But Georgie, literally, could not eat without complications or even to absorb enough to sustain life. “I knew I was sick but then I started believing that there was something wrong with my brain. Was my body telling me I was sick, but I wasn’t?” “I just couldn’t understand why it was happening to me. All these tests were coming back really abnormal, yet some doctors continued to tell my family and I that I was fine, despite the evidence that was right in front of them.”

It was six years of tests before Georgie and her mum Robyn finally got an answer. They went to a private medical centre in Auckland and the doctor told her that she had Ehlers Danlos Syndrome or EDS – an incredibly rare genetic and very debilitating, incurable, connective tissue disorder that affects the collagen that holds our bodies together. The condition itself isn’t usually terminal, but the conditions and or complications that EDS causes can be.

DWAYNE LOHMANN

Normally, collagen helps connect our bodies by stretching back and forth like an elastic band. “Mine is like chewing gum,” Georgie says. It affects every part of her body – the incredible flexibility was because there was nothing holding her joints in place. The disorder also made her gastrointestinal system incredibly porous, meaning she couldn’t digest properly. When the doctor gave a name to her condition, Georgie and Robyn sat in the doctor’s office and cried.

Georgie has spent most of the past few years either in hospital or in great agony.

“We finally felt like we were getting somewhere,” Georgie says. “We didn’t have to fight to get heard. I wouldn’t wish this condition on anybody, but it was a massive relief to us as a family. It is no way to live – in doubt of yourself.” But with the diagnosis came a crushing reality. The condition meant it was now clear that Georgie’s life was under constant threat. Her stomach and small intestines are unable to digest and absorb nutrients like most people, leaving her to starve due to the paralysis in her stomach and intestines. Any food that is taken in sits in her stomach, causing horrendous pain, bloating, nausea and vomiting. So, she has a permanent ileostomy, to remove waste from her body, after three major

bowel surgeries. She also moved to ingesting sustenance solely through an intravenous line. “I was reliant on IV nutrition called TPN (total parenteral nutrition), 16 hours a day through a central line in my chest that sits just above the top chamber of my heart, just to survive.” She still likes to eat because she loves food but that causes pain and trauma. Georgie usually ends up vomiting. “But I just deal with the suffering. Usually it is something salty – like hot chips. “It’s so hard when most things we do in life are centred around food. Of course, I want to enjoy it like everyone else.”

17

Some people associate hospice care with someone who is bed bound. I could be that. But I want to know that, when my time is nearing the end, that I have lived my best life possible. That is what life should be about. the Shotover Jet and flew in a helicopter. Recently, Georgie and Livvie have had a helicopter flying lesson, jumped off the Sky Tower in Auckland and Georgie experienced a hot lap in a V8 super car at 230kmh. Georgie has taken videos of all of them. Whenever she is having a down day, she puts one on the TV and sees herself grinning from ear to ear. “They cheer me up.” Fly a helicopter, tick. Georgie working her way through her bucket list.

But Georgie wasn’t interested in feeling sorry for herself. Despite being placed in Nelson Tasman Hospice care last June after the complications of her condition became too much for her body to handle, she has launched into life, trying to squeeze every moment out of the time she has left. “There is this stigma when you are sick, of how you should look. But there is no rule book to how you should be or act or how you should handle your emotions. For me it was about getting out there.” So, Georgie wrote a “f*** it” list. It’s like a bucket list, but with a bit more attitude. “Some people associate hospice care with someone who is bed bound. I could be that. But I want to know that, when my time is nearing the end, that I have lived my best life possible. That is what life should be about.”

but they made it. They shopped, parasailed and jet skied. They had sunset cruises and drank on the beach. “It was the trip of a lifetime. It was breathtaking. We just went a bit crazy.” Georgie’s mum Robyn wasn’t worried about them being away for almost three weeks. Her daughter’s medical team had done an incredible job in making sure every eventuality was thought about. “The girls are very in tune with each other. I knew that all three would look after each other.” The previous year, Georgie and her family were given the trip of a lifetime to Queenstown by the charity Race for Life, where, among other activities, they did

Georgie is selling some of her artwork to help fund the rest of her list. @Georgierosedesign is on Instagram and features her beautifully illustrated prints with words like “Be brave,” and “The best view comes after the hardest climb” emblazoned across them. She also sells them at the Isel Market. Some of her list items are less adventurous. She wants to make a lemon meringue pie with her aunty and wants to see a zebra in real life. She would love to meet Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. Georgie and her family have codewords for things. Especially now it has come down to planning Georgie’s funeral. But they don’t call it that. They call her funeral her ‘after party’. They call her casket, her ‘sleeping bag’. “It’s my way of accepting it. There is still a part of me that is in denial, that this is

CHARLES ANDERSON

So, she got to work on her list. When she was younger, she started writing things down, as all kids do. Back then she wanted to hold a snake and go to Australia. “But when I got sick, I said, ‘screw that stuff, I’m going right to the top’. So, I just did it.” Last year Georgie, her twin sister Livvie and one of her best friends went on a girls’ trip to Hawaii. Just the three of them. But travelling into the United States is not a simple ordeal when you have EDS. They took five suitcases of medical supplies, including 20kg of her IV nutrition. They might have had some curious looks going through US customs,

actually happening. It doesn’t hit me until I go to bed. It sounds like I’m OK, but I’m not, so I’m trying to make it a little bit easier to cope with.” Hospice doctors have told Georgie that her condition is declining faster than what they first thought. But still Georgie is facing that head on. She requires daily potassium infusions in her home just to keep her heart beating. Without this she would likely have a heart attack. A nurse visits her each day, preparing all her intravenous medications that she requires throughout the day and night. And her team are always on standby for anything they need. “The reality is, everybody dies. I’m just dying a bit faster but I’m living my best life while I’m doing it.” Livvie says some people wake up when they are 70 and haven’t done half the things that Georgie has managed to experience in such a short time. Georgie also wants to spend some of her time giving back by doing some random acts of kindness that she will pepper through the next few months.

The reality is everybody dies. I’m just dying a bit faster but I’m living my best life while I’m doing it. She will also have a ‘before party’ in January, where she can bring together loved ones and have an incredible night. Georgie just hopes that it is a long time between that party and the ‘after party’. “People see photos of me smiling and having an amazing time – they think I must be fine. People have an idea of hospice care being bed bound. I’ll never let that idea be me.” Robyn says, “dying doesn’t have to look like dying”. “No parent should ever have to help their child plan their afterparty. It’s not the law of nature. On the other hand, it’s a blessing to be able to help Georgie and Livvie organise what Georgie wants. There are so many people who don’t get to say goodbye … We have got that

opportunity. There are so many people in hospice care who sadly aren’t able to do a bucket list. In some ways maybe she is doing it for them too.” Georgie says that, from a young age she learned the true meaning of life – loving and appreciating it. “You learn to focus on what matters most. My illness has taught me the kind of resilience I never thought existed. But, most of all, it taught me to never take life for granted, and to be grateful for what you have, not what you don’t have. The challenge of facing an incurable illness involves living with uncertainty while still wanting to maintain meaningful control over what may lie ahead.” When the after party finally does arrive, there is one last item on Georgie’s list. But it isn’t for her, it is for her sister. Livvie isn’t fully on board yet but, when the time comes, Georgie wants her sister to go to Dubai and do a skydive. Then, in the middle of a foreign land, falling 200kph towards the earth, Livvie will release some of Georgie’s ashes into the air. It will be that one last adventurous act by her twin, letting her loose into the universe.

My Home

home Jessie Johnston didn’t have to go far to find her perfect home, she — along with husband Andrew — moved into her childhood home in Appleby but made some definite style changes.

Who lives here? This is home for myself, my husband Andrew, our dog Sammy and two cats Jemima and Jezebel. The house we now live in is the house I grew up in and is pretty much the only place I’ve ever lived. Andrew has also called this home for the last five years. What four words would you use to describe your home? Random, colourful, cosy and creative. What inspired this look? My ultimate inspiration and interior design objective can be found on Instagram, @TheJungalow, by Justina Blakeney. The style is all about colour, patterns, and plants. What do you love about the neighbourhood where you live? Everything really, it’s a beautiful setting. We live rurally and while it’s great having contact with neighbours, we’re grateful to have space of our own without looking into someone’s window or backyard. We also love living so close to Rabbit Island. It’s a two-minute drive whenever we want to go to the beach or walk the dog at Rough Island. What piece would you never part with? I can’t pick one piece but as a whole, I couldn’t part with the art. Above the television is a print by Wanaka based artist Sierra Roberts who does amazing portraits and next to that is a linocut print by UK artist Kat Flint. The piece above the smaller bookshelf is from Mum’s travels through Africa, and the two woven wall hangings were created by my Grandma. We also have a very colourful piece by USA finger-paint artist Iris Scott which was the first art item we purchased, with money given to us as a wedding present.

Tell us about the pink bookcase. The pink cabinet belonged to my Grandma and originally it had a very dark wood stain finish. I knew I wanted to brighten it up a bit and after looking at colours I narrowed it down to mustard yellow or pink. My dad was horrified and my husband tried to talk me into the yellow option (the lesser of two evils) but in the end I think pink was always going to be my choice. Mum did all the hard work and we finished it off with new ceramic handles that I found at the Motueka Sunday market. What’s your favourite spot in the house? Definitely the lounge as that’s where all my art and plants are. My husband won’t agree with this statement, but I don’t have enough plants, at least not enough to have them spread around the house and still maintain that ‘jungle’ look, so I have everything in the lounge where I spend the most time. Therefore, it’s the best-looking room in the house…for now. Where do you shop for homewares? The majority of our homewares are second hand, mostly from local op shops, Trade Me, Facebook Marketplace, and friends and family. I think our two couches are the only major items we purchased brand new. What’s your decorating style? While Jungalow is my inspiration, in reality my decorating style is a mixture of whatever happens to catch my eye and what I can convince my husband to let me take home.

It’s safe to say my style lacks any kind of cohesion and is more about individual pieces that I love. But hey, let’s just call it eclectic!

One particular battle I lost involved a Formica dining table with pink fluffy dining chairs (I regularly contemplate and regret this defeat). It’s safe to say my style lacks any kind of cohesion and is more about individual pieces that I love. But hey, let’s just call it eclectic! What’s next on your interiors list? More plants, obviously, but top of my wish list would be some designer patterned wallpaper to create feature walls. Oh, and I’ve always wanted a beautiful, big, colourful rug for the lounge.

In a past life the house was actually a shed used for shearing. It was converted to a temporary house and became our permanent family home in the early 1990s. The transformation to what we live in today is impressive.

When it comes to homeware, do you save or splurge? I have no problem splurging on homewares if I find something special. But I particularly love treasure hunting in op shops and antique stores which often means paying less than buying new.

family home in the early 1990s. The transformation to what we live in today is impressive.

Best budget tip?

What is the best memory in your house?

Never under-estimate an op shop. They are full of so many treasures and its great fun hunting out bargains. Also, it pays not to visit an op shop too soon after pay day.

I’m terrible with memories but something that does stand out to me is the first time myself, Andrew, the dog and both cats were all together (we got the cats just before lockdown), squeezed into our double bed, enjoying a sunny Sunday morning. It wasn’t particularly peaceful, but a good memory all the same.

Have you done any renovations? After my parents moved out, and before Andrew and myself moved in, Mum and Dad gave the place a complete facelift. The work included new joinery, new Coloursteel exterior, the creation of an ensuite and a fantastic new deck. In a past life the house was actually a shed used for shearing. It was converted to a temporary house and became our permanent

Did any of your purchases cause a debate? Most of my purchases cause a debate as they’re generally wants not needs. Although it wasn’t a purchase, the pink cabinet probably met the most resistance!

Wine, art and views Nestled in the Moutere Hills sits Gravity Winery, a special space they love sharing with everyone who visits.

O

n top of producing and selling a range of superb wines, the winery offers a range of experiences for people at the stunning location which is open seven days from 11am. “It’s beautiful here, and it is not hard to come to work with these views. We have a 360-degree view over Mount Arthur and Kahurangi National Park and Tasman Bay,” says Kirsten Ammann, Gravity Winery’s Nelson Cellar Door Manager. The team at Gravity Cellar Door offer a range of experiences including casual or seated tastings with food pairings, as well as popular winery tours with winemaker Brett Bermingham, along with a delicious local platter menu to enjoy.

“You can be as busy or relaxed as you like when you’re here. Sitting on the deck overlooking the stunning view is hard to beat” says Kirsten. Alongside wine tastings, tours and pairings, Gravity Winery have opened a community art gallery for visitors to wander through, turning an office area into a community space to showcase local artists from all different mediums. The gallery was opened August with six local artists sharing the space. A range of upcoming and established artists are invited to utilise the space with a threemonth rotation. “It’s been a great addition for us. We wanted to give something back to the community. The artists have really embraced it here and love the space,” she says. Gravity Gallery is open through summer daily from midday. Formerly Woollaston Estates and Mahana Winery, two years ago the winery was kept in New Zealand ownership by investment company, Booster. Since then, the Booster Wine Group have produced many of their top wines there and fittingly chose to name it after the state of the art gravity fed winery on site — Gravity Winery. Three weeks after opening their Cellar Door in February, Gravity Winery had to close their doors as the country went into lockdown.

24

January 2021

Kirsten says that opening seven days over the winter months was great after coming out of lockdown as many places chose to stay closed and there were lots of locals and Kiwi visitors eager to travel the country and support local businesses. “That was challenging to say the least, as a new business to have to close just after opening our doors, but since level one, we’ve had great support from our awesome local community and Kiwi’s visiting across the country,” says Kirsten. The Gravity Winery team are excited about the current summer season. “We’ve got live music, winery tours, picnics, plus a few other exciting additions happening,” says Kirsten. “We have a great team here at Gravity Winery, who are looking forward to an exciting 2021 and beyond. We can’t wait to welcome anyone who hasn’t visited our Cellar Door and Gallery already and welcome back the many locals who have made us their regular ‘go to’ spot for a unique and inspiring experience through our wines with exceptional service, food, art and of course, those views”.

Enhance your personal style with upbeat eyewear Lynley Matthews lives and breathes beautiful eyewear. She and her husband, optometrist Phil Matthews, own Matthews Eyewear Eyecare, a group of 16 optometrists around the country. What styles are trending in New Zealand? 2021 brings a lot of retro shapes inspired by the ’70s and ’80s – but if big or colourful isn’t your thing, there are lots of revamped classic shapes that are in style as well as refined metals. Rounds are certainly a big trend. There was a strong trend of mixing acetate and metals, notably rose golds. Caroline Abrams is an excellent example, with narrow finer acetate frame fronts, blending that with metal temples. It’s a beautiful combination. There’s a trend towards pastels and crystal-clear frame colours. The crystal now has a slightly tinted hue, with dusted pinks, lemons and smoke. Tortoiseshell is getting a makeover with exciting colour combinations with teals, pinks and reds. Some of my favourites are the French handmade brands Caroline Abram, La Font, Face a Face and Belguim made quirky Henau. How to embrace wearing glasses? All women deserve to be the very best version of themselves every day and wearing glasses is an opportunity to embrace your personality.

32

January 2021

Your glasses should be an extension of your personal style, and you should feel good wearing them. Be playful, be intriguing, be bold, be authentically you. Eyewear is seen as an accessory and can enhance your looks and style. If you get the right shape, size and colour that really works well for you, it can give you a real lift and can make you feel better about yourself. “A mini face lift.” Choosing frames for the first time needn’t be an intimidating experience. Having someone to help style you can be fun. We have a great range that will suit most face shapes, styles and budgets. How do you pick the right frame for your face? It’s important to consider proportions and balance. I always start with getting the right shape then move on to the colour.

Embrace colours that flatter your skin tone. Some frame colours can really enhance the colour of your eyes. What is an optical wardrobe? It’s unlikely that you would wear the same pair of shoes every day for two years but that’s often our approach with glasses. Consider building up an optical wardrobe with different styles for different looks and develop your own personal style. If you already wear glasses, then prescription sunglasses are almost a must-have here in Nelson. I would definitely have a pair of beautiful ontrend oversized prescription sunglasses. The European brands we carry also make sunglasses, so you can find something unique and gorgeous. We take pride in seeing our customers walking out with their new eyewear, feeling fantastic and looking amazing!

A round face will suit angled frames that add definition and shape. A square face suits a more rounded shape that softens strong jawlines. Rules can be broken! Celebrate wearing glasses, have some fun and don’t be afraid of being a little bold with colour and shape. If you go bold in shape, then perhaps have a more traditional colour and vice versa.

Poker players dealt winning hand Sometimes when the chips are down, it can turn out to be a whole lot more fun than you think. Britt Coker explains.

P

laying poker is frustrating — which is actually a good thing about the game, according to Kieron McAlister. It would be boring if it was easy to win. It’s a reflection of the game’s longevity that no one does then. But when the cards do start to go your way, all those rotten hands that you folded early will make the winning all the sweeter. Kieron’s a winner. A recent Petone tournament scored him the big $10k prize after battling it out with 296 other players. The pot is more modest back here in the local Nelson league, where it’s mostly about point scoring and having a bit of fun.

34

January 2021

In between the moments of frustration, of course. “You can have days and weeks when you have absolutely no luck whatsoever and you just can’t seem to win a hand. But then you have a week where you just seem to hit absolutely everything and you get that satisfaction of winning.” Other than luck, you may also be able to win if you can read the proverbial poker faces staring at you around the table, though it’s not a skill Kieron credits for his success. “I’m not very good at it, I don’t read people very well, but that’s what you’re supposed to be able to do.” No one else I spoke to seemed to rate themselves highly at it either. For a small minority in Petone, baseball caps and sunglasses were compulsory fashion accessories, though Kieron didn’t bother wearing any of that stuff but won anyway. So maybe he wasn’t so bad at reading body language after all?

You can have days and weeks when you have absolutely no luck whatsoever and you just can’t seem to win a hand. But then you have a week where you just seem to hit absolutely everything and you get that satisfaction of winning. Kieron McAlister

“I think I played well. I played aggressively at the right time, and folded at the right time and there’s always an element of luck. You’ve got to hit the right cards at the right time to be able to have the winning hand basically.” Kieron has been playing the game for 13 years after he learnt, “in a fairly odd location”. He was running a personnel billeting office in Afghanistan (he’s ex-British military) and his free Friday

afternoons coincided nicely with poker games played at the local base. There’s a few more things he can do in his free time now that he lives in Nelson but the frustration and friendships in the local league still see him play twice a week. Local organiser, Marty Whyte says the emphasis here is on the social aspect of the league. You can’t get rich playing local poker and he doesn’t want you to. Marty ensures the Nelson league is registered under Class 3 of the gambling act which keeps the pot low and the game accessible to everyone. “Everybody starts with the same amount of chips and the same amount of money so there is no advantage and for three or four hours entertainment that’s pretty good value. At the end of the day, it’s about sitting down, playing a game and having a joke with people. It’s all fairly friendly and very social.” There are over 100 people playing in the local league, half of them are regulars and around a quarter are women. Anyone is welcome to join in and if you know a lady called Luck, it sounds like you need to bring her as well. Wear accessories if you want, you won’t be the only one. If you concentrate a bit you might work out what cards have been played each hand but you still need to understand what a winning combination looks like, and have that elusive good fortune on your side when you do. If you’re a complete novice, spending some time getting a

basic handle on the rules before you head along would be advantageous (there’s plenty of YouTube clips to help you with that), though everyone’ s been a beginner once so player patience is there. Plus, any confusion around rules and your overly optimistic upping of the ante will probably be taken as an opportunity for a little light ribbing and gleeful chip confiscation. The Nelson league operates Monday to Thursday across four pubs between Richmond and Nelson. You can choose the number of nights or locations from week to week. play in a knock-out finals tournament. The winner gets a cash prize, and a trophy for their pool room. Marty has been organising the local poker league for six years. He gets his reward through the friendships he’s made and the appreciation from the players. “One of the guys who was going through a bereavement said to me months later, “If I hadn’t had poker I would have been a lost man.” That’s how a lot of people feel about it. There are a couple of people who’ve come up and given me a big hug and said thanks for doing this. You can’t put a price on that.”

A ring for a lifetime One of the biggest decisions engaged couples make is choosing their engagement and wedding rings. Halfdan Hansen, owner of Nelson’s Jens Hansen, says that while diamonds remain the gem-of-choice for classic engagement rings, some customers prefer more exotic stones and they work closely with their goldsmith to custom-make designs exclusive to them. “Forever rings have enormous emotional significance,” Hansen says. “They are entwined with a couple’s hopes and dreams, which sounds very romantic, and of course it is. Rings have been cultural symbols of love and commitment for centuries. Our role is to continue that tradition, translating our customers’ needs into rings that perfectly reflect their desires.”

Wedding Feature Brides and grooms often use the upstairs boardroom and library to get ready with members of their wedding parties, including wardrobe changes for the reception and/or departure. The full house hire package could also include on-the-day support from the functions manager at an extra cost. Full house wedding hire starts from $1200 +GST (subject to individual requirements.) Delicious catering is conveniently provided by the in-house caterer, Melrose House Cafe. Get in touch with Melrose House at info@nelsonvenues.co.nz or phone 03 546 6330 to book this stunning venue for your wedding day.

With Jens Hansen now globally recognised, the goldsmiths are handcrafting wedding and engagement rings for couple’s world over. “Our diamond specialists love working with local customers in person and playing a role in their selection process. International customers don’t have that opportunity, so we co-create their rings online,” Hansen says. “It’s very meaningful to know our jewellery is being worn and cherished here and around the world. Love is an eternal theme in our work and creating heirloom rings that will be worn for generations is a true privilege.”

Centrally located between three major national parks, the Falcon Brae Villa is an ideal luxury private retreat of the highest standard. The entire villa can be booked as exclusive use with a private chef, and house staff, and for larger groups, there is the option of renting both the villa and Stonefly Lodge for a total capacity of 14 adults and four children. Whether you want to be whisked away alone for some private snaps or invite the entire bridal party for photos and champagne on a mountain, Helicopters Nelson can cater for groups large or small and can also help create a special engagement package for a proposal. You can be flown to one of the famous Lord of the Rings film locations for a wedding ceremony to remember and Helicopter Nelson also offer transfers to some of Nelson’s finest lodges.

Get the dance floor rocking To make your wedding a truly memorable occasion, hire Audio Entertainment, and your guests will be talking about your reception for years to come. With over 30 years of experience, owners Roger and Amanda Neame are passionate entertainment professionals, who specialise in weddings, corporate functions, balls, discos and special events. “People can find a much cheaper DJ who uses low quality gear, but we pride ourselves on the high-quality sounds gear and lighting we use, and the excellent service we provide,” says Roger. No two functions are ever the same. “We don’t have set playlists,” says Amanda. “Roger will read the crowd and play to them. Prior to the wedding, we can discuss your music ideas, whether you would like us to play some special songs or music people can dance to.” Audio Entertainment even has outdoor speakers for beach weddings and generators for off grid weddings, and they will travel anywhere across the Top of the South. In a recent review, a client said, “You guys were amazing. So many people said you were great – they want your playlist.”

Put your photos into a photo book. There’s nothing like looking at your pictures in print.

A special destination Looking for the perfect wedding venue? Look no further! Set in gorgeous Golden Bay, you couldn’t wish for a better location than Zatori Lodge, which offers ever changing panoramic views over the magical Collingwood estuary. “Golden Bay is such a special destination, well-known for its natural beauty, and the sense of calm people feel when they’re here,” says Tracey Walker, who has owned and operated Zatori for the past six years. “We have a great network of local businesses offering all support services needed so it makes the big day easy and stress free.” Tracey likes to over-deliver and help make their perfect day be exactly that. “Couples needn’t worry about the weather, one wedding here was on a stormy day, but the photography was moody and epic – they loved it.” Tracey also loves her role as a marriage celebrant and being a special part of the special day. “I absolutely value my business, and I like to spoil my guests”. Although Zatori used to be open to independent travellers, nowadays, Tracey is focussing on making Zatori an exclusive venue for weddings, conferences, retreats and special occasions.

Well-planned and with varied colour and design there is lots of interest all year round. ‘A dream come true,’ the gardens are a touch of paradise. Revered glassblowers employ age-old techniques Throughout the ages, glass has always been a rare and highly prized commodity, and the craft of glassblowing was passed on from father to son, and from master to apprentice.

A

ccording to legend, man first made glass around 2000 BC when Phoenician sailors set up camp on a sandy beach and built a fireplace to support cooking pots for their evening meal, using pieces of sodium carbonate found in their cargo in Egypt. The next morning, they discovered that the sodium had fused with sand and formed clumps of clear substance – glass. Since the 1980s, Nelsonians have been very fortunate to have exceptionally talented glassblowers in their midst – the Höglund family, whose glass-blowing skills have been revered locally, throughout New Zealand, and around the globe for the past four decades. Their incredible journey began when Erik Höglund, who worked for the famous Boda Glassworks, revolutionised the art of glass in Sweden. His talent and love of the craft has been carried through the generations. Ola Höglund and Marie Simberg-Höglund first met while training at Kosta Boda and Orrefors Glassworks, before moving to Eswatini in Africa, where they started Ngwenya Glass in 1978. The couple then explored New Zealand and fell in love with the South Island, setting up their first glass studio at Craft Habitat in Nelson in 1984. They then relocated to their Appleby Studio, where they still are today. Perpetuating the family tradition, Ola and Marie’s sons Ossian and Oliver are also successful glassblowers and daughter-in-law Annabel is training as a glass artist while granddaughters Liliana and Isabella are looking forward to

helping out during future school holidays. Höglund Art Glass Studio & Gallery is a vibrant showroom filled with distinctively bold, colourful glass art which makes perfect birthday presents or a statement piece for the home. Introducing a beautiful, handcrafted vase or fruit bowl to a table or shelf will enhance the aesthetic appeal of a room, adding a touch of glamour and elegance. “We melt our own glass, and each piece is individually made and is uniquely different from the next,” says Marie. “They make great gifts because you know the receiver won’t have one already.” Over the summer months the showroom will be open seven days a week, from 10am to 4pm. Although the Höglunds have reduced their opening hours due to COVID-19, they have been encouraged by the number of local customers and visitors from around New Zealand who are heeding the call to support local businesses and buy NZ-made products. “We will be glassblowing most of the day. If you are interested in watching glassblowing in action, please call us before your visit.” For thousands of years, glass has been made by melting sand at around 1400°C (2152°F) using a flux such as soda to aid the process. “Each of us has our own individual style and we all apply the same basic glassblowing technique that was used 2000 years ago.”

This summer, come and visit the fabulous Höglund Art Glass Studio & Gallery at 52 Landsdowne Rd, Appleby. (Five minutes from Richmond). Ph: 03 544 6500, or order online at hoglundartglass.com. PROMOTION

New year, new you? Hopefully everyone had a very merry Christmas and the new year is well underway, relaxing on a beach somewhere enjoying some sunshine It is well known that this time of year is the time for resolving to make some changes to yourself and often these are in the health and financial areas, which are proven to be interrelated. Here are some key tips that you might want to consider if this is the year you want to get on top of your finances. TRACK YOUR SPENDING The best way to control you spending is to understand where it all goes. I would suggest getting three months’ worth of bank statements to track spending, then categorizing expenditure into food, clothes, rent, entertainment etc. to get an understanding of how much you spend in an average month. Once understood, you can elect areas to focus on savings.

PLAN YOUR MORTGAGE Get a handle on how much you owe to who, and at what rate. From here diarise when it’s time to re fix your mortgage. Prepare to shop around. Using a broker is a solid idea to come up with a strategy long term. KIWISAVER AND SAVINGS Check your investment strategy (is it growth or balanced?) and make sure it coincides with your investment timeframe. Double check your tax rate and make sure your provider is doing the best job for you. GET ADVICE Seek out independent advice, making sure financial decisions are all coordinated to your long-term financial objectives. Celebrate summer with sustainable clothing choices

A

lthough she’s not one for making New Year’s resolutions, Cynthia Greep says the beginning of the year is all about resetting lifestyle choices and planning goals. “There are customers who come through our store who have set a goal of not buying ‘new’ and only purchasing second-hand to keep their footprint small,” says Cynthia, who owns Brook Street Lounge in Mapua. “Some customers, who are on a limited budget, can find quality labelled clothing here, without the high designer price tag.” Sustainability means different things to different people. “We have noticed that customers are a lot more discerning nowadays, when purchasing second-hand.” Cynthia loves the drive out to Mapua and glistening Ruby Bay, and into the wider Tasman area. “There’s some of the best land in the world here,” she says. “If you have seen the water sparkle on a hot day, you’ll know what I mean. We’re blessed to have such a lovely area; one that is filled with creatives, artisans, food and beverage producers.”

PROMOTION

Cynthia encourages people to support local to help build cottage industry businesses. “Keep an eye out for honey, olive oil, plants and local flower stalls on the side of the road.” This summer, local accommodation venues are booked out with Kiwis. “We endeavour to support local designers and get different ranges instore to showcase to travellers. People love walking from the campground around the beach and over to visit Brook Street Lounge, then back down past Java for coffee. So, we like to keep our stock moving and refreshed.” Cynthia and her dedicated team carefully select their stock, mainly buying from locals and they also source from around the country. Brook Street’s point of difference is the inclusion of natural materials (new) including French and Moroccan market baskets and scarves. Their customers love dresses, especially midi and maxi dresses, as well as linen and New Zealand designers which focus on sustainability. Brook Street Lounge has grown over the past four years with the support of wonderful contractors like Jo, Kirsten and Ruby, and family and friends.

Kirsten and Cynthia carefully select their stock at Brook Street Lounge.

“Jo is a seamstress/alterations specialist; we love that customers value sewing and that alterations are back in vogue.” “Our shop isn’t perfect; it’s an organic work in progress.” Brook Street Lounge has recently added recycled menswear and are experimenting with pop-up markets in their large outside space. “There are chairs and water for dogs. People can grab an ice-block from Mapua Fruit and Vege or a coffee from Java or the wharf and come and sit and enjoy watching the world go by under our covered area, while family and friends shop in store.”

Creating better habits As the new year comes to life, many of us use it as an opportunity to reset and try to create some new — better — habits. Whether it’s our diet, exercise, wellbeing, work goals or creating better balance in our lives, the start of a new year is a good time to reflect and reset. Buddy up New goals, new opportunities, and new ways of doing things are what many of us seek. But what’s a goal without a way of achieving it? This month Nelson Magazine looks at some ways to reach your goals in 2021, by creating better habits.

Find a substitute for your bad habit Finding a replacement to a bad habit isn’t easy, it takes planning, so when you find yourself in a situation where a bad habit might occur, like stress or boredom, be prepared. Replace that extra flat white you don’t really need, with a glass of water, or a healthy snack. Find something that will work for you and be ready.

Eliminate triggers Are there things which tempt you into a bad habit? Think what they are and try to avoid them as much as possible. If jumping on Facebook or Instagram is your bad habit, make sure your phone is out of reach. Put it far enough away so that it’s an effort to pick it up. If staying up late and watching one too many episodes on Netflix before bed is your guilty pleasure, get rid of Netflix. It creates a barrier that makes bad habits harder. Change your environment and your habits will change too.

A quiet diet or secret pledge to quit drinking gives you an out. If you fail, no one will know. But if you find a buddy to tackle these challenges with, it gives you someone to lean on when the going gets tough but also someone to keep you accountable. You also get to celebrate your wins together.

Talk to your future self Leave yourself little reminders of what you’re trying to achieve and why. Perhaps a note on the fridge or as the screen saver on your phone. You could also download a motivational app to keep you moving forward.

Give yourself a pat on the back When you complete your habit, celebrate it. Your brain will soon start craving the reward it expects to come at the end. But let’s not defeat the purpose of your habit. Be sure you reward yourself with something that’s valuable to you, but not something that defeats the purpose of your habit. Creating new habits is hard, achieving new goals is hard. But the rewards can be life changing. So, whether it’s for your health, your productivity or your mental health, give yourself the best chance to reaching your targets and don’t beat yourself up. Have a great 2021!

Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards Celebrating its 30th year, the Registered Master Builders House of the Year is a prestigious competition which celebrates building excellence in New Zealand and confirms the Registered Master Builders Association’s commitment to building excellence. Joya Devine meets with local builders, showcasing their award-winning homes. The House of the Year awards celebrate New Zealand’s best homes and builders and the craftsmanship behind them. Due to Covid-19, the Nelson/Marlborough/ West Coast regional awards were announced online this year, and local members gathered at an event to watch the results and celebrate their successes. All category entrants in each region are critiqued by the same panel of two judges, who assess each property and decide on a score against a set criteria for each category. Every entry is marked out of possible 2,000 points which are granted for workmanship, design, style and functionality.

1970s home reigns supreme after major transformation THE PROPERTY PILOTS

I

n 2016, two locals bought a fabulous 1970s home located on the banks of the Matai River and completely transformed the property.

“There was a large concrete carport underneath that Tony redesigned to create extra space. The kitchen was pokey, so that was opened up and some internal stairs were closed off to make way for a spacious new bathroom. We also increased the size of the deck upstairs, so we could maximise the stunning views of the river and open up the house in the evenings.” Downstairs, they incorporated the old carport into the lounge and laid a polished concrete floor. With the addition of a large outside deck and a swimming pool, it created a great area for entertaining.

“We had kept an eye on it for years because the home had been unchanged since the 70s,” says Marty Byrne, who previously co-owned the property with Cathy McBride. “The house was interesting with lots of orange glass which was popular in the 70s, and when we realised it was for sale, we bought it and the section beside it.” Initially they weren’t sure whether to subdivide or renovate it so decided they would live in it for a period before making any decisions.

RENOVATION | $500,000–$1 MILLION CATEGORY GOLD AWARD, REGIONAL CATEGORY WINNER, REGIONAL SUPREME WINNER

Jason Gardiner Builders were recommended to Marty and he says they lived up to expectations.

“I knew Tony of Karsten Architectural Design, so he came along and we discussed a few different options.”

“Jason and the team were incredible. They made the build process such a pleasure and were really inclusive when it came to the hands-on side of the renovations.”

Holiday at Home Taking design cues from the house’s earlier days, a retro colour scheme welcomes guests at the entrance, and is used again in the living room. To make it feel like a holiday home, internal walls were reconfigured on both floors to make it more open. Large, double-glazed windows have been positioned to capture the scenery, and easy-care polished concrete flooring also responds to the homeowners’ design brief. This renovation has improved the quality and energy efficiency of the existing home while providing more natural light, a brighter interior, flexible living spaces and a connection with the garden as well as the river across the street and the hills behind. – Judges comment

Extensively renovated by Jason Gardiner Builders, this home on the banks of the Maitai River was recognised as the Regional Supreme Winner at the recent regional Master Builders House of the Year awards. Builder, Jason Gardiner says the initial stages of the renovation were complex due to rules and regulations because of the house’s proximity to the river. “We had to think outside the square about how we were going to prop up the building to dig it out underneath, which required some strategic planning.” The original footprint had to remain the same so when the new foundations were laid, we also installed steel beams, which cantilevered over the existing block walls to create the larger deck.” Jason says the aspects he particularly likes about this renovation are the polished concrete floors in the entrance way, the plywood in the stairwell, and the cedar weatherboards outside. “The view out to the river and into Nelson is pretty special too.” With over 25 years’ experience in the Nelson building industry, the last nine of those running his own business, Jason Gardiner Builders, Jason has built a reputation for quality work with his expert team. “We pride ourselves on repeat work and referrals from existing clients, as was the case here. It was a privilege for our team and sub-contractors to transform this home for Marty and Cathy.”

verything we do is to an awardwinning standard, including the home we built for John and Jill on Kakano Lane which has won gold at this year’s regional awards,” says Russell Campbell who co-owns InHaus with his wife Tanya. The three-bedroom property also scooped ‘Regional Category Winner 2020’ and made it into the Top 100. Russell says John and Jill love living on Kakano Lane and are very houseproud. “It’s a neat little street; all of the homes have been designed and styled to work in harmony with each other and complement each other.” Just last year, Inhaus won a national award for another house on the street. The InHaus team are very proud of Kakano Lane and are grateful for the opportunity to build homes there.

InHaus is a small boutique business which prides itself on their ability to consistently produce high-end product. They may not be the biggest building company, but their reputation for quality and service is certainly big. This is reflected in both their current and past achievements in House of the Year, including five national awards. In 2015 their son Shaun, who is a builder at InHaus, revealed he has the same meticulous eye as his Dad, taking out the national Apprentice of the Year award.

Tanya says Russell’s previous training as a joiner gave him precise attention to detail. “He’s also a qualified builder and has broad knowledge of the industry and building processes.” Meanwhile, Tanya’s extensive experience as an interior designer is also a huge asset to InHaus. “We do most of the designing together with architect, Hugh Grant – we work well together. We try to create homes which are a little bit unique, are stylishly designed, using good quality materials.”

‘You Sexy Wing’ Not all clients want sprawling multilevel homes. Sometimes the brief is for a compact house, but with a sharp focus on excellent design – especially in the entertaining spaces – and this 201sqm single-level Richmond house is a stellar example. The two wings have been splayed to create an outdoor living area that gives both shelter and privacy. Kwila decking has been laid at floor level to create seamless indoor-outdoor flow.

The kitchen, dining and sitting areas open on two sides to decks. With three bedrooms, two bathrooms (one a spacious ensuite) and an open-plan living, dining and kitchen space, there is plenty of room for guests. Vertical cedar cladding has been installed with mitred corners and there has been careful placement of fittings. The clients are proud of their new home and often invite ‘the boys’ over for a drink and pizzas. – Judges comment 81

Built to Joinery Standards “My guys have executed the build on the house to a joinery standard. Every fixture and fitting has been carefully thought about and considered, down to the finest detail.” Russell particularly likes the design of the home and the internal courtyard which was created for privacy and joy of living.

This year InHaus Developments received the prestigious Platinum Award and Sapphire Award.

“John and Jill have done some amazing landscaping and they have furnished it beautifully.” The couple didn’t find the building process stressful at all. “They loved it,” says Russell.

This award is bestowed on builders who achieve outstanding achievement in building excellence and win five or more National Category titles.

As well as running InHaus, Russell is the president of Master Builders in Nelson.

“I was impressed by the calibre of entries in this year’s House of the Year awards and the success of local builders,” he says. “There were quite a few golds awarded in our region, which was great to see.”

Mike Greer strikes gold DAVID CHADWICK

N

ew Zealand’s largest privately owned residential building company, Mike Greer Homes, is renowned for building award-winning homes.

“The homes are award-winners because they’re not just houses that are off the shelf, which means that our customers are receiving the best solution for them and their site.”

“We’re getting the awards because we’re doing a great job for our customers,” says James Petersen, architectural designer for Mike Greer Homes Nelson, which received a gold and two silvers in the regional House of the Year awards.

“Attaining awards shows the best of what they can achieve, from design and build through to management. Unless you’ve got a good project management system, you won’t get the desired result. Winning the awards involves over 100 people for every home that’s built, from those working in the office to the people onsite.”

The home which struck gold was also a regional category winner.

“It means they’re working cohesively and doing their best for the customer. We’re always trying to showcase something different, rather than repeating designs over and over. It’s about finding a design that suits the site.” James says the judge’s eye goes to street appeal as well as building quality. “It’s also about being backed up by a great team of trades people.”

Stoked to Be Here This attractive single-level home blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor living with large windows which welcome the outdoors in, and its large, covered deck connecting the interior’s living spaces. An intimate, formal lounge; open plan living and stylish, functional kitchen and timber accents and lighting that add warmth and texture, while skylights let natural light flood in. A vaulted ceiling makes the living-dining space feel larger. Exterior vertical cedar cladding and 35-degree roof pitch gives impressive street appeal. – Judges comment

Prior to building, James was invited to the owner’s home for a cup of tea. “They were downsizing and wanted to transfer the sizes of their rooms and aspects of the layout. “So, I completed the puzzle, structuring the house across the contour. We managed to get a well laid out, nice sized home on a challenging piece of land; you get great value out of Mike Greer Homes as design is part of the solution, it’s not an after-thought”

James says additional extras such as a pergola, a Louvretech system and huge decks took the design to the next level. “The owners have turned the home into something really special.” “The designs of our winning homes reflect the customer’s choices,” says James. “They have pulled the homes together really nicely from colours, to materials, to furnishings.” James and his wife Richelle have owned Mike Greer Nelson for the past six years, but the company has recently changed hands. “We have loved every minute of it, but we have decided to take a break.” The new owners, Trevor Lineham and Ben Malthus have been with the company for years and are perfect for their new role. “The strength of this business is the people. If there was a Master Builder’s award for people that work within building companies or on sites, we would win it hands down.”

n a prime location on the Kina Peninsula stands a stunning black and white villa with breath-taking sea and mountain views. Built by Stonewood Homes Nelson, the home is a prime example of what the company can achieve for its clients, and winning gold at the regional awards endorses their capabilities. ‘It is very much a one-off design bespoke home, designed by the clients themselves,” says Brent Stewart who co-owns Stonewood Homes Nelson with Rhys Horncastle. The home was placed on the site where a 200-year-old house was pulled down, and the clients were very much part of the journey from the get-go. The classic-style home has fabulous features such as French gables and box-end corners. “The locality and the architectural design were pretty special, and the clients were really cool to deal with,” says Brent. “The cherry on the cake was the owner’s interior design flair. She did all of that, and a very big nod to her for the lifestyle award presented for the bathroom.”

Classic Beauty Well laid out and very practical, the hub of this four-bedroom home is the kitchen with large scullery, designed by Bays Joinery. It certainly has that ‘wow’ factor. To the side of the kitchen is a breakfast nook overlooking the view. Built-in corner window seating in the living space, great indoor-outdoor flow, and high ceilings add to the sense of grandeur and spaciousness. The home’s interior has a sense of opulence, thanks to its lighting, fittings, and flooring. Black and white tiles in the grand main bedroom ensuite, complete with freestanding bathtub and double shower. Such a high level of attention to detail has created a home of comfort and style. – Judges comment

Brent says the Stonewood team is very proud of its gold category and they are equally proud of their silver category win. “It was an infill home in the centre of Richmond with neighbours and built-up areas to deal with, so it had a lot of challenges.” He says the clients had fallen in love with the Stonewood show home, so it’s a replica of their show home incorporating some of the individual style and flair of the clients.

High-end materials and quality workmanship mean strong street appeal and comfort throughout. – Judges comment

Both properties have gorgeous viewpoints. “The Kina property has a lot more vista and the one in town is elevated, but it has a really central location which is what attracted the clients,” says Brent. “It’s quite a prestigious bunch of awards,” says Stonewood Homes Nelson Sales Team Leader, Jenny Ohlson. “It doesn’t matter what level you achieve; gold, silver or bronze; your home is still completed to an award-winning standard.” Stonewood Homes Nelson is renowned for its quality. “We don’t use special people to enter House of the Year – it’s our everyday quality trades people and our awesome team who achieve such high-end results. It shows we can pitch ourselves against bespoke builders.” “We’re a great team because of the systems and processes in place, and everyone is really comfortable in their roles,” says Jenny. “Our customers can jump into a client ‘porthole’ and see up-to-date images of their house and can communicate easily with their construction manager.” Jenny says people’s choices depend on their budget. “Our architect can adapt plans to suit their needs. “We do everything from nana’s cottage to the Taj Mahal,” says Brent.
