Electric bike to test the best If you’ve seen two boys zipping along Nelson footpaths on an interesting-looking bike, chances are it was Team Xpeed boys, Will Hewitt and Zac Wilkes. The Nelson College boys have made an electric bike for the Evolocity competition to be held at Christchurch’s Rapuna Race Track in two weeks. Evolocity is about stimulating electric vehicle innovations and having some fun racing the

different designs. The competition will test the vehicle’s speed, efficiency and manoeuvrability in a 100 metre drag race, 10 kilometre economy run, a tight street circuit and a rolling resistance test. “We first heard about it from one of the teachers from school who suggested we enter the competition, and we just build on it from there,” says Will. “We went through a few initial ideas like a scooter and such,

Kate Russell Increasing pressure on school rolls in Nelson has meant that two city primary schools will be introducing enrolment zones early next year, with one principal saying that they are already “over capacity.” Both Hampden St School and Nelson Central School are in the process of confirming their ‘home zone maps,’ which will mean that they will only take new enrolments from within that zone if their roll is full, or close to it. Hampden St School principal Don McLean says that his school is “chock-a-block,” with 517 children currently enrolled, and is already turning away new enrolments for next year from families who are likely to be out of the zone, such as the Victory area. “We just haven’t got the space for more kids,” he says. “It’s not ideal, because I like the idea of parents having choice.” The school, which is also building two new classrooms to cope with demand, is in the process of negotiating the zone boundaries with the Ministry of Education and is hop-

but we’ve always leant towards a bike.” Each team is given the same motor and battery, but from there, creativity runs free. “We’ve gone for an agile vehicle with everything as lightweight as possible,” says Zac. With the help of mentors Daniel Farley and Adrian Curtis, the boys say they have spent hundreds of hours designing and refining their electric bike.

local schools,” says principal Pip Wells. “Now we’re just waiting for final data from the Ministry before we can put it in place.” Pip says they are currently telling new enrolments outside of the proposed zone, which is likely to overlap with Hampden St School’s zone, that there are “no guarantees” of getting a place at the school. “The whole idea of the enrolment scheme is to manage the roll, and it’s only used when there are high numbers,” she says. “If we are not really stretched we can take people outside the zone, but at the moment we are close to capacity, so we need to look forward and make sure we have a mechanism in place.” Both principals say that they are hoping they can make exceptions for younger siblings of students who are already enrolled at the schools. “We want to be fair to our families and keep them together,” says Don. “If we can’t, then to me, that’s legislation gone mad.”

We need to look at our whole network of schools and the population pattern.” More information on the zone boundaries will be available from the schools soon, once they have been confirmed with the ministry of education.

“I’ve spent a lot of nights, straight after school until 10pm, at Daniel’s house working on it,” says Zac. The bike’s top speed is 42km per hour, which it reached in 11.3 seconds. Mentor Daniel expects the boys to do extremely well, “I’ve worked at universities and one of my first impressions of Will and Zac is that they’ve got some skills above what some second year university kids have.” “It’s been interesting seeing how fast they pick things up,” says Daniel, “we saw fire come out the side of that bike a few times while they were trying to get it right, but they’ve really perfected it.” And as for the competition, the boys are confident and raring to go. “We’re hoping to do quite well, definitely get a podium finish, we’ve strived to make the best vehicle we can so we’re keen to see how it does,” says Zac.

What would you like to see in Nelson? It’s a question Nelson City Council is putting to the public as part of its review of the Nelson Resource Management Plan. The council is keen to gather suggestions from Nelsonians about how to best manage the region’s natural and built environment, and feedback will be incorporated into the draft Whakamahere Whakatū Nelson Plan. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says the plan is an important document that acts as an ‘instruction manual’ for managing how Nelson grows and develops in the future, while protecting the region’s natural environment. “Through this review, we want to know how, together, we can make the most of what our city is blessed with, so we can continue to attract people here and make it easy for them to stay,” she says. “It’s about creating a Nelson that builds on the creativity that our city is renowned for,

the Regional Policy Statement, Nelson Air Quality Plan and Nelson Resource Management Plan, into one integrated document. The council will be collecting feedback up until 30 November via its website www.nelson. govt.nz/nelson-plan and feedback forms which have been delivered to households. Planning staff will also be at the Nelson Saturday market and other public events. People can also give feedback via email to nelsonplan@ncc. govt.nz or to a planner by phoning 546 0200.

Track users were offered hot drinks, bike lights, breakfast, bells and high viz gear. The new path is for walkers, cyclists, people on scooters and mobility scooters. Forestry worker crushed after failing to apply handbrake: A forestry worker was fatally crushed between two felled trees after failing to apply the handbrake on his skidder, a coroner has found, saying it was impossible to determine if this was a result of fatigue. Michael Steven Langford, 28, was logging on a forestry site at Fox Hill Cemetery Rd, Wakefield, when he was crushed to death on November 29, 2013. The young business owner was contracted by Total Harvest Solutions Ltd to clear 7000 tonnes of logs from the site, and his family and co-workers described how he worked long hours, and felt under pressure to complete the job by Christmas. Mr Langford was working down a steep gully out of view of his co-workers on the day he died, using a Tree Farmer C7D cable skidder to haul felled trees to the top of the skid site. Co-workers found him blue and not breathing.

Warriors coming to Nelson Locally Owned and Operated

Andrew Board

“Loyal to the bitter end”, “keep the faith”, “Warrior nation”, Duke Climo not only knows the Warriors’ catch phrases, he epitomizes them. So, when news broke on social media Saturday morning that the Vodafone Warriors will play a pre-season game in Nelson this summer, it’s fair to say he was excited. “Pumped. I was pumped when I heard the news. It’s a pretty big deal for Nelson.”

The pre-season game was announced by organiser Aldo Miccio on Saturday and will see the Warriors play the St George Illawara Dragons at Trafalgar Park on February 20. Duke, who is a huge league fan and coaches the Wanderers Wolves and manages the Tasman Titans, says the match will be massive. “I didn’t think it would ever happen. But the profile of the sport has been lifted and I’m happy that as a region we’ll be able to show support for [Warriors captain] Simon [Mannering].”

Aldo says conversations to organise a match started about two and a half years ago. “To bring NRL to Nelson has been almost three years in the making and I’m over the moon that it’s finally happening,” says Aldo. “The Warriors said, ‘we want this, you want this, so we’ll make sure whatever game we do get is in Nelson’.” “They are really excited about coming to Nelson and they’re really excited about providing the opportunity for Simon Mannering to have a homecoming after

what has been an incredible career with the Warriors and the Kiwis.” Kick off is at 5pm and a curtain raiser match will be played around 3pm between the Tasman Titans and the West Coast, allowing people to make a whole day of it. The Warriors fly in on Wednesday and they leave on Sunday while St George are having a camp here so they’ll fly in on the weekend prior and be here all week. Both teams will be interacting with the community in several events which are yet to be confirmed.

One Dental Mapua and Stoke are proud to welcome two new dentists, Joo Kim and Sari Mikkinen, to the team. They join principle dentist Keith Beasley in providing gentle dental care to the whole family.

Nelson’s iconic ‘Black Cat’ shops are up for sale for the first time in more than half a decade. The block of four shops on Annesbrook Drive are currently home to Black Cat Tummy Station, Black Cat Vintage, Black Cat Super 7 and Black Cat Hair Design, and have been in the same ownership since 1963. They will be auctioned on December 10 at 2pm. A spokesperson from Summit Real Estate, who is marketing the property, says that properties like this are “rare” and don’t come around very often.

“It’s quite an interesting free-hold with a few potential streams of revenue, and it’s pretty exciting from the sellers point of view as it’s got some high sentimental value.” They say they have already received lots of “good solid enquiry” in the listing, which has only been up for a week. As well as the Black Cat, another “super rare” piece of commercial land will be auctioned on the same day at 12pm in the hub of Richmond. Summit says the current car yard at 201 Queen St is “golden mile land” and is one of the only pieces of land like it on the street.

Two days before the world firefighting championships in the United States last month, Nelson firefighter Haydn Parker wasn’t sure if he’d be able to compete – by the end of the week he was a world champion. Haydn was featured by Nelson Weekly back in April when he said his goal at the competition was to complete the course in under 1 minute, 40 seconds, which earns a membership to the exclusive 'Lions Den' club. After months of hard training, Haydn says he was feeling fit and confident. He arrived in Alabama a few days before the event, dubbed the “toughest two minutes of sport”, but during his first practice on the race course Haydn tore his hamstring and calf. He says he called his family back in Nelson to tell them the bad news. “I just thought how I’d be letting so many

Photo: Andrew Board. people down so I tried to stay positive and do what I could to help my leg.” By the time the heats rolled around Haydn’s leg was still holding him back, but he was able to compete. “During the individual finals I made a big mistake putting a hose into a box, because the hose jumped out. I had to go back and put it back in, when I finished I took my gear off and saw that my time was 1.39.20, so I reached my goal and

got into Lions Den. I was so happy and relieved because I was far from my best.” After the individual finals, Haydn then teamed up with four Americans to form a hybrid team, which completes the course as a relay. Haydn’s team went on to win that competition and set a new world record in the grade with a time of 1 minute, 11 seconds, making Haydn New Zealand’s first combat challenge world champion.

Our finest selection for your peace of mind.

Haydn says it was an amazing feeling. “It was a really cool buzz, it's such a big event. It’s such a tough event and you’re taking on the best from around the world.” The challenge finals were televised live in the US on ESPN and Haydn says, despite his success, he has unfinished business. “Two days after I got back I said to my wife about going again, and she said ‘I knew this was coming’. I just feel I could do a lot better with my individual time and I know I can run a lot faster.” Haydn says training for next year, where he wants to go under 1 minute 30 seconds, will start soon. Haydn wanted to thank his sponsors Spark Digital and Nimbus, Crossfit Whakatu Eat Me Supplements, Ewing Poultry, Equilibrium, Richmond Aquatic Cenre and Nelson Pine Industries. Groups urged to 'grab a gig' Only a few days remain for organisations with clever ideas to submit their project for “Grab a Gig” before the application deadline this Friday. “Grab a Gig,” a regional competition in the mould of Dragons’ Den, is another partnership between Chorus and the Nelson Digital Future Society. It follows on from the successful Gigatown competition, where Nelson was one of the five finalists to become the first town in New Zealand to be given 1Gbps internet connectivity throughout the city. The competition offers two free, two-year gigafibre plans donated by Chorus that will be awarded on December 2. Event chair Karen Lee says the purpose of the competition is to see Nelson keep its reputation as one of New Zealand’s most innovative regions. “It’s been great to hear some of the ideas so far," says Karen. "We have some really forwardthinking organisations in Nelson that could do so much with the gig. Other communities around the world have taken advantage of growing their economy, providing new job opportunities, and growing community spirit through technological innovation gigafibre offers. We saw that during the Gigatown campaign. We want this for Nelson too and we’re glad Chorus continues to see potential in our city.” The deadline for applications is this Friday, November 20. Applicants with creative, digitally-forward ideas – either as new projects or existing ones - that can be implemented with gigafibre, can apply through an easy process, with help available. Full information and competition conditions are available at www.ndfs. org.nz.

SHOP 'N' WIN: The third Shop ‘n’ Win weekly prize draw of $500 worth of Richmond Mall Vouchers was handed over to Bet Phipps last Friday. Mall Chat Christmas shopping is into full swing and for Richmond Mall this means we’re busy, busy, busy. But we have plenty of other projects on the go too.

• The loading bay area for Pak ‘n’ Save is now complete – and we have realigned all the car parks so they are all good to go and it absolutely looks beautiful. • Work on the raised walkway has begun and should be completed by the end of November. These walkways are designed to keep people safe when walking from their car to the mall. • The mall welcomes a new retailer this month. Black Pepper is currently busy with their fit out in the old Sassys tenancy. The popular women’s fashion brand, will be opening this Thursday so we’re really excited about that. • With the Richmond Santa Parade on November 29 we are handing out gifts to the kiddies, and also letters so kids can write to Santa. We will have a lovely wee post box in the mall, where they can come and post, and if the parents put their email on it we can get Santa to send a reply to the child. • The mall’s popular gift wrapping station – with all new paper designs – paint | wallpaper will open on December 5. But if you’re doing your shopping early this year then free gift wrapping is currently available for the information desk.

More medals returned: Since it is Remembrance Day, it seemed only fitting to advise you that today I have finally tied up the last loose ends of research that will enable me to return the last set of medals the Nelson RSA offered to families in June last year - your article refers. Five sets of WW1 medals remained unclaimed since your article appeared, so in August 2014 I offered my services to research the remainder. The war medals of 53567 L/CPL Norman Alexander Andrews, 1st Battalion of the Wellington Infantry Regiment, a man who had, as a result of completing an electrical course while convalescing from gunshot and shrapnel wounds in England, eventually become largely responsible for the reticulation of electricity in Motueka, will finally be reunited with his direct descendant. I am delighted to report that L/CPL Andrews medals were dispatched today to a grand-daughter in Taumaranui - job done. Ian D. Martyn, Medals Reunited NZ.

Funds needed for refugee swim lessons: Should be for everyone. some of our own locals can't afford lessons. Tara Jolly.

Student doctors finish training: I've just spent 5 very long days in hospital and all the staff were amazing, which made my stay more bearable. Kelly Sheldon.

It should be funded for everyone, not just the refugees. Pauline Van Der Plas.

I've always had great care at Nelson hospital, and always accept student doctor/nurses being involved. I do think there should be a tad more notice for the patient, though. I was nervous going in to be induced with my second baby and was introduced to a student doctor and asked if I would mind if he was there. Next thing I knew, the nurses were getting him to pop in the IV line. Kind of a bad experience - after three (painful) attempts the midwife took over. I appreciate every student needs to gain experience, and I wouldn't have minded at all if I was in for bloods and then leaving. But knowing I was there to birth a child - I didn't need added stress! But all the best to the new doctors - you've picked a great place to work! Megan Wright.

Good grief, what about our own families who can't afford lessons and no doubt there are many who can't. Brenda Kenny. What a pack of ass-cracker comments. If you are so concerned about everyone getting free swimming lessons, why don't you start your own fundraiser to make it happen? Because it's easier to criticize people doing stuff than doing it yourself. Rayon Mackenzie. Well, I'll stick my two cents worth in, I work with mainly international people in my job and as people they are a whole lot nicer than the majority of kiwis I meet. If whining about swimming lessons is all you've got, get out in the world and see real problems! Janelle Thorpe.

quickly the houses are being built. “I can now see my home – I can’t wait to move in,” he says. “My kids are so excited – they want to come and look every day.” A Cung has two weeks off his job to help out with the build, as part of the 500 hours his family is required to give to the project. He says it has been very beneficial to be part of the build as he now knows how everything works. “I understand the wiring, and when something is broken I can repair it,” he says. The Canadian team will be here until November 20 to work on the houses, with some of them staying on to travel around New Zealand. Kristen Côté and her father Mike, who are from Ottawa, are on their second trip to New Zealand, having come over in 2012 to help with the Christchurch earthquake rebuild. “We just loved the country and the people, and wanted to come back,” she says. “It is such a fantastic experience and afterwards we’re going to spend four or five days travelling around.”

A BRAND NEW SHOW TRAVELLING NZ THIS SUMMER. BEAcH RD, TAHUNA. 21 & 22 NOV

Two Nelson families will receive the best Christmas present they could ask for this year – a brand new house, thanks to Habitat for Humanity. A team of 15 volunteers from Canada have flown over especially to help build the two prefab houses on Kawai St, which will be home to two refugee families from Myanmar. Last week, Nelson Weekly talked to Nelson chairman of Habitat for Humanity, Rob Silcock, just before the build started, and just one week later the walls are up and roofs are on. A Cung Ning Ching, whose family will occupy one of the houses, says he is “so excited” about his new home, which will hopefully be ready for them to move into just after Christmas. A Cung, who has been in New Zealand for nearly eight years, has three children aged nine, five and three. They were one of about 30 families who applied for the houses. He says the Canadian team are “very good” and can’t believe how

Two very special guests attended the launch of a book about the brave and sometimes daring exploits of Nelson nurses during World War I. All Guts No Glory was researched and compiled by members of the Nelson branch of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists. The 373 page book features the biographies of 57 Nelson nurses who served in the Great War and last Wednesday two granddaughters of heroic nurse, Mariette Victorina van Aerde, flew into Nelson for the launch at the Richmond Library. Nadia Shuttleworth, 82, of Morrinsville and Vicki Muirhead, 74, of the Gold Coast, say the book is a lovely tribute to their grandmother who was honoured for saving the lives of three British soldiers in Antwerp. Mariette stayed with the injured soldiers in their hospital after it was evacuated and looked after them, stealing bread from a baker to feed them, until they found safety in a nearby convent. Later, Mariette displayed even greater courage when she was imprisoned by the Germans and stripped, whipped, lashed and bayoneted for refusing to reveal the location of the soldiers. Mariette managed to escape and reach Calais, before being evacuated to London where she spent nine months in hospital recovering from her injuries. Mariette, who was known by the British soldiers as the Angel of Antwerp, was awarded two Belgian military medals for her bravery and holds a place of honour in the New Zealand RSA. Although Mariette's bravery has now been well documented, Nadia says they were unaware of her exploits for many years. Nadia says their grandmother "seldom talked about the war," and when she did "her stories were so incredible we didn't believe them anyway". "She was very French and very temperamental and very beautiful - men were fascinated by her.

But she told these amazing stories that were hard to believe, so we thought she was just exaggerating. "It wasn't until after our father died that we came across all these newspaper cuttings about her and we realised that she was the Angel of Antwerp. She even had some of the original letters from the British soldiers she saved thanking her, and I do remember the scar from the bayonet she was a very brave woman." Nadia says they also found Mariette's medals, which had been lost, when Vicki was cleaning out one of their father's suitcases earlier this year. Mariette had emigrated to New Zealand after the war, living in Motueka with her third husband Stan Hull for 30 years before she died in 1980 aged 91. Interestingly, the book's principal researcher Cheryl Carnahan nursed Mariette in Nelson Hospital in the late 1960s. Cheryl says she found out then that Mariette was "involved in some kind of espionage during the war" but she had no idea she the Angel of Antwerp. Cheryl says the project had been immensely rewarding for all the researchers who developed a tremendous amount of admiration for the nurses. She says little has been written about the nurses who often worked in cold and dangerous conditions and had to rush to a trench for safety when the hospitals were bombed. Cheryl says the book also includes chapters on the hospital ships, New Zealand army hospitals and army chaplains. Dennis Bush-King, Robyn Cliff, Bess Conrad, Judith Fitchett, Bob McFadden, Kay Switzer, Barbara Wells, Alison Johnston and Alison Trengrove were the other researchers. The book costs $40 and is available by contacting Cheryl on 5447684, or at the Genealogy Library at 67 Trafalgar St on Monday 1pm to 4pm, Thursday 10am to 4pm and Sunday from 2pm to 4pm.

Historic bush opened to public A rare and “highly significant” piece of forest nestled behind Nelson city will be open to the public this weekend. Kellys Bush is an area of 5.7 hectares at Enner Glynn, and is part of a larger 50 hectare beef-fattening farm which has been owned by the Kelly family for the past 30 years. It includes an area of 2.5 hectares of original lowland forest, with many of the trees being from pre-European times. It is home to many native birds, some rare and endangered species of fungi and plenty of giant native earthworms. Empty shells of the giant carnivorous snail, powelliphanta, have even been found on the forest floor. The forest has been described by Nelson City Council as an ‘area of special significance’ and ‘locally uncommon’, particularly because of its proximity to Nelson city and its richness in Tawa and Maitai, which have limited distribution in the South Island. Lindy Kelly, who lives on the farm with her two younger generations of family, says they like to be able to give the public access to the farm, and have had incredible support from the Nelson community to keep it going.

Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz The family have also worked hard to make the forest a ‘place of active learning,’ with walking trails, picnic areas, bridges and a shade house for school children to grow their native trees in. “We have worked to save, restore and extend the bush, with the help of the community, especially local schools, kindergartens, clubs and other members of the community,” she says. “We have put in a huge amount of work clearing weeds to preserve the bush, as well as replanting areas.” Impressively, over the last year they have had 97 volunteers clock up 762.5 hours of work. “Our objective has been to not only protect and preserve this historicallyvaluable ancient forest remnant and to make this area a place of recreation and enjoyment, but also a place where people can learn how to maintain, develop and protect it,” says Lindy. Kellys Bush will be open to the public this Sunday 22nd November from 1-4pm. No dogs, please.

The Clydesdales are always a popular attraction at the GoldenEdge Nelson A&P Show and this weekend will be no exception with a stampede of the giant horses coming from all over the country. There will be the usual Nelson presence in the Clydesdale section with legendary horseman Fergus O’Connor, with a little help from his daughter Marie and her partner Glenn Leys, and Phil Amberger and Karen Peters bringing horses. And this year, they will be joined by some of the biggest Clydesdale teams from around the country, including Taungatara Stud in Featherston and the famous Erehwon Station in Canterbury. Fergus, 90, is delighted with the number of Clydesdales coming to the show, saying they will make an imposing sight. “It will be good to see some big teams there again,” Fergus says. “It will be like old times when we used to take about 20 horses and we’d drive, ride and lead them down the Appleby Highway to the show. I used to ride a trick pony at the show back then, too - I’d pick up a pound note off the ground at a full gallop. But that was a long time ago now.” A & P Show equestrian coordinator Liz Harvey says she’s pleased with the number of Clydesdales entered in this year’s show. She says the ridden and in-hand classes will be held on Saturday with the working classes, featuring sledge driving and logging competitions, on Sunday. The show will also feature a range of equestrian events, sheep dog trials, wood chopping competitions, the popular Town & Country Vet Animal Nursery and Vortex Spas Strongman Challenge on Saturday and Sunday. A Young Farmers and sheep shearing competitions will be held on Saturday, while the hilarious terrier racing will be held on Sunday at 2pm.

Helicopter trust needs just $25K more for winch Fundraising

dinner for women's refuge

Simon Bloomberg

The amazing response to Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust's campaign to raise funds for a new life-saving winch continued last week when the Lions Club of Richmond donated $2500 to the trust. The trust started fundraising to purchase a new $270,000 rescue winch in August after the Japanese manufacturer of the existing winch announced it would not service, overhaul or replace any more of its ageing models. Now, only three months later, the trust is just $25,000 short of its target after receiving generous support from hundreds of businesses, community groups and individuals across the Nelson-Tasman region. "It's been an absolutely amazing response," trust general manager Paula Muddle says. "We've had so many groups like Richmond Lions help out and it's all added up - it makes you realise that people really value us." Paula has also helped out, literally walking (and rafting and biking) the walk when she joined friends Nikki Ryan, Lisa Thomson, Debbie Edwards, Annemieke Lewis and Joanne McClelland to raise $19,000

Photo: Andrew Board. when they entered two teams in the Spring Challenge in Wanaka in September. Nelson Pine Industries had earlier got the ball rolling with a $20,000 donation followed by another $20,000 from Nelson Forests and $10,000 from Talley's main fishing vessels. The helicopter's winch operator Paul Bryant says the winch is a critical piece of equipment during rescues in remote terrain and at sea. Last year, Paul

used the winch 30 times during "operational live" rescues which were often "at the critical end of the scale" in terms of their missions. "That's not a lot in terms of the number of rescues we do, but it's a critical piece of equipment when we go anywhere that's inaccessible. Anytime we go into the steep terrain in the mountains or out to sea we need the winch." Paul says the new winch will

have an extra 30m of useable cable and a faster speed, which will give the rescue crew better access into steep terrain or heavily forested areas and reduce the amount of time hovering in sometimes precarious conditions.

Nelson Women and Children’s refuge is gearing up for a glamour-filled dinner and auction evening that promises a great night out in a good cause. The evening is the brainchild of local man John Baudier of Yacht Services NZ, who has been a long time supporter of the refuge. John says he came up with the idea for the event because the refuge provides such a vital service in Nelson. “Last year, Nelson Women's Refuge provided services to 285 women and 165 children affected by domestic violence in our region. They’ve had hard times of late with a change of board and reduced access to funding,” he says. “I’m really heartened by how people want to help and have swung in behind this event.” Speaking at the event will be Nelson’s mayor Rachel Reece, refuge director Katie O’Donnell and CEO Ang Jury. The Nelson Women and Children’s Refuge dinner and auction evening is at The Boathouse, Wakefield Quay, Nelson, 7pm on 25 November, doors open at 6.30. Tickets are $50 from Yello Cafe, The Swedish Bakery, The Boat House, Yacht Services New Zealand or via phone (tickets will be delivered) at 0210785118.

Every bachelor’s degree in New Zealand must meet certain academic criteria and be approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), whether they are delivered through an Institute of Technology, or a University. A: And even better … all NMIT bachelor’s degrees are designed to prepare our graduates to be highly work-ready. “After finishing my degree I moved to Wellington and was amazed at how much people over here rate NMIT. The difference between my ability and my university counterparts is extremely obvious. A house may look nice on the outside, but appearances can be deceptive and Meth Screen encourages any buyer to test for the drug Methamphetamine before they make that important decision to buy. Methamphetamine, more commonly known as P, has been a significant problem in New Zealand for the past 15 years and what many people aren’t aware of is the fact its manufacture isn’t the only way it can be hazardous. Both manufacturing meth and smoking it leaves extremely harmful contamination in a property and, if you purchase or live in a home carrying harmful residue, you will also become a victim of the meth problem. Contamination can affect everyone in the home, particularly children, including more severe asthma and respiratory problems, rashes or other skin issues and insomnia. Some of the toxins used in the manufacture of the drug are also carcinogens, and over a long period of time they can be extremely detrimental to health. Meth Screen provides a professional and discreet service to property owners, and by using a lab-based test they can obtain extremely accurate results. For peace of mind over your home or property purchase, contact Meth Screen today. Contact Frank Freeman for all your conveyancing needs, whether you’re buying or selling residential or commercial property. He has all the usual attributes of a competent conveyancer, being approachable, friendly and efficient, as well as being able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. He also offers fixed fees for straight forward transactions and will discuss fees at the start of the process, with a discount to Gold Card holders. Trust Frank to go the extra mile for you in dealing with Frank Freeman those niggly little problems that crop up from time to time when buying or selling a home, without an increase in the fixed fee. Frank is well versed in dealing with first home buyers and assisting with applications for KiwiSaver funds and First Home subsidies from Housing NZ. Frank has worked in the Nelson area as a lawyer since 1989 and has been in sole practice since 1999 at 185 Bridge Street. Success in Real Estate comes with understanding your client and their wants and needs in each unique situation. Selling your property is a significant lifetime event. I understand that people’s motivations can change at different times of their life. If they are young, they might be trying to get the top dollar for their home. This year, organisers have really focused on using the gala to celebrate the local community and the school, as well as create a successful fund-raising event, and they definitely have plenty on offer to achieve both goals. While activities for the children will include tried and trusted favourites such as bouncy castles, smash the plate, face painting, mini jeeps and water walkers, there are plenty of new and exciting things the kids can look forward to experiencing. For starters, Pro Karts will be offering people a go at playing combat laser tag, while the haunted house is sure to get a scream or two. The gala will showcase some delicious, affordable food again this year with whitebait patties, crepes, gourmet chicken burgers, international foods, including the ever popular curry, a sausage sizzle and fish and chips, plus the teachers stall will have a selection of food including sherbet and toffee apples. Mum and Dad can also sit back and relax with a glass of McCashins beer or Seifried’s

There will be two bands from Nelson Intermediate performing on the night, along with the Hampden St School staff band, Inspiration, and the school band, HSS Rockers. The gala will be taking on a whole new look this year because of construction happening within the school, including the closure of Ngatiawa St and its transformation into a street food market. The school will also be offering people the chance to pre-order their Christmas trees at the gala, which will then be available for pick up on December 11. Trees are only $10 each so keep an eye out for the stall on the night. The plant stall will also have a great selection of seeds and larger plants ready to go in the garden. Don’t forget to mark Friday, November 20, on your calendar and head along to support the Hampden St School Twilight Gala. The event will be running from 5pm until 8pm with parking available on the Nelson College field for a gold coin donation and remember, the gala will be on rain or shine.

We use a Pathway Action Plan designed so individual learners can take their own responsibility for long-term goals and aspirations. We have operated a registered café / restaurant for many years. Our café is open to the public every Thursday of the school terms, offering learners the real life daily skills required by industry. This includes, all front of house and kitchen positions, and allows learners to gain multi skills yet still see focus on their natural abilities, which may be in a specific area. Our free Friday invited guest luncheons, give more detailed skills and customer service and interaction. These include buffets, set menu, and finger food functions. We have been 100% locally-owned and operated for all this time, understanding the local needs and of the highs and lows that occur in this industry throughout the seasons. Our philosophy that has withstood the test of time is simple. “Attitude Determines Performance” All our staff hold true to this motto, and the right action that this instils in all who have passed through the training centre. Our tutors are proficient and up to date with current trends, but more importantly, able to drive learners to understanding what it takes to gain sustainable employment, and the attitudes this entails. We have a roll-in, roll-out enrolment, so learners can join throughout the year. This allows peer support and encouragement while sharing skills and knowledge with each other. “The best way to find out if you know something is to teach it to someone else”. Band ready for jazz festival With just over a month to go until the annual Nelson Jazz Festival, the Nelson Jazz Club Big Band is already on song. Members of the 18-strong band practice throughout the year, but that goes into overtime approaching the Jazz Festival which kicks off early January. Big Band member Dave North says now is a good time of year to hire the band for Christmas functions. “We are primed and ready to go. It’s always enjoyable playing at corporate events and we know we are sounding good. The ones we have done in the past have worked really well because we can play background music when people do speeches and that sort of thing, then when everything is finished they open the dance

likely perform an open air concert at 1903 square towards the end of December as a fundraiser. But they are available to play at Christmas functions until then. To contact the band email Dave on dnassoc@hotmail.com.

Gypsy extravaganza comes to Nelson A new show, Gypsy Extravaganza, is coming to Nelson. The Beach Road reserve will be packed with stalls, entertainment and live music from 9am -5 pm on Saturday and Sunday as locals are invited to take part in the Gypsy Festival that is travelling the length of New Zealand. Event organiser Mels Berg says the event is free and familyfriendly, “it should be a good day out at the beach.” “It’s a brand new show and so far we’ve had an incredibly positive public reaction.”

The Gypsy extravaganza visited Greymouth earlier this year “We’ve got 26 stalls, ranging from food, clothing, jewellery, herbal products, lots of kids

stuff, readers, a gorgeous open home and an art gallery.” Mels says it’s a different town each weekend for the troupe, so far they’ve travelled from Invercargill to Motueka. “We’re really looking forward to bring the show to Nelson, its been quite cold down South with heaps of dodgy spring weather, so we’re hanging out for the Tasman sun.” The Gypsy Extravaganza is hoping for good support in Nelson and, if all goes well, the show will become a regular event.

SPORT National league football bid to get go-ahead Locally Owned and Operated

www.shuttersport.co.nz

Andrew Board A bid for a full national league football team is likely to get the official backing from the region’s governing body for the first time, at a meeting tonight. Nelson has had a team in the ASB National Youth League for three years, but the team is run privately and without financial support from Nelson Bays Football, which is the governing body for the sport in Nelson and Tasman. But New Zealand Football is changing the structure of their national competition, meaning only bids involving a senior men’s side as well as a youth league team will be accepted. This puts football in Nelson at a cross-roads: either enter a team for both competitions or lose national competition altogether. The latter seems to not be an option. The Nelson Falcons are the current national youth league champions and Nelson College is the current national secondary school champion. To not have a pathway for the talent the region is producing seems a total waste of coaching and de-

Nelson Marlborough Falcons celebrate winning the national ASB Youth League last year. Nelson is likely to enter a bid for a team in the senior national league competition. velopment. Nelson Weekly understands that a working group has been set up to investigate the sustainability of a full national league bid and it’s already come up with a team name – Tasman United. The group involves members from the region’s largest clubs, a committee member of the Falcons and representatives from Nelson Bays Football. Those investigations have been overwhelmingly positive, says

working group member Mark Sheehan. “Buy-in has been great, people like the idea and corporate partnerships are already being developed. This is a really positive step and it is involving everyone, not like past attempts that have been just a few guys around a table,” he says. A report from the working party will be presented to members of the Nelson Bays Football district executive tonight and chairman

John Armstrong says the mood around the table is positive. “I’m confident that the DE [district executive] will vote to submit a bid and I’m confident because the working party have done such a thorough job in putting the bid together. It has support of stakeholders and the work so far has been very impressive,” he says. If NBF do support the bid, and it is accepted by New Zealand Football, it will give the team ac-

cess to resources and money that were unavailable to the Falcons. It will also come with backing from Mainland Football, which sits as the governing body between NBF and New Zealand Football. Some games of the proposed tenteam national competition will be televised and a Nelson bid seems to fit well with NZF’s desired mix of three South Island teams. The other two are likely to be Canterbury and Otago, which compete in the current national league. The Tasman United concept has already gained support from the region’s greatest football player, Jeremy Brockie. “Let’s help bring back the glory days and secure the future for young and up-and-coming talented footballers,” he wrote on his Facebook page about the bid. John says now is the best time to bid, on the back of the region's success in the youth league and secondary schools competition. "As a region, we're performing well and there's no doubt some of that is due to the Falcons. We probably wouldn't be at this point [of entering a bid] if if wasn't for the Falcons and their success."
