We spend more online Nelsonians spend 15 cents of every retail dollar online, much more than the national average of 10 cents, according to data commissioned by Nelson City Council. The data was collected by Market View and posted on the council’s website earlier this month. It shows how much is being spent in the retail sector, where that money is coming from and where locals are spend-
ing their money. Data from eftpos, debit and credit card holders – which makes up around 70 per cent of total spending – was used to collect the information. The quarterly report was for the period ending September this year. The data showed that for every retail dollar spent by someone living in the Nelson City Council region, almost 58 cents is spent

who has only been in the job a week – says it’s important for retailers to have an online presence and these stats back that up. “Whether we agree with it or not, people are shopping online and social media is important for retailer’s brands.” Beetees co-owner Glen Beattie says they

Nelson’s Luke is South Island’s strongest man
FROM PAGE 1
Andrew Board Luke Slotemaker isn’t just Nelson’s strongest man, he can now lay claim to being the strongest in the South Island. Luke was the overall winner of the Vortex Spas Strongman Challenge at the A&P Show over the weekend. Luke muscled out challengers from Kaikoura and Christchurch to reach the top of the podium and says it was a great weekend. “I’m really happy with it. We had some cool equipment donated to us which made it interesting.” Luke – who is also the event’s organiser – says he will be running it again next year and is hoping to encourage competitors from the North Island. “This year it was a genuine South Island competition but I’m hoping to get some guys from up north here next year. Some are already talking about it.” It is the second year the strongman challenge has been held in Nelson and Luke says the competitors were thrilled with the weekend. “They all enjoyed it and were really happy.” In second place was Matthew Gardyne of Kaikoura and third was Hayden Lee of Christchurch.

saw the importance of having a website so they created one about a year ago. He says, when fully stocked, it does work well with sales coming from as far away as Australia. But he says it is labour-intensive and items only sell quickly when heavily discounted. “But we need to be there [online] and we see the value in it. Retail isn’t what it used to be so it’s important to be innovative and try things.” Those thoughts were echoed by Tracey Brignole, owner of shoe store Soul and Maraposa. She says to maintain the website is costly but the orders help keep her staff busy during the quiet winter months. “It’s a tool for us. We have a lot of out-of-towners who buy shoes in our stores and when they leave they ask where they can buy our shoes online.” She says online shopping does have a downside for her though, with “show-

People will use our staff time and expertise and then go online to save as little as $10. We’ve got a few people who do it regularly so we have implemented a $20 fitting charge for them.” Tracey says her stores still far out-sell the website, but she has had the odd
day where online sales will out-sell one of her stores. More spent in Richmond: The data has also revealed that more money is spent in Richmond’s CBD than Nelson’s, but that once you include the city fringe and suburbs, Nelson as a whole towers over Tasman. The data shows that $59.2 million was spent in the Richmond CBD, compared to $37.8 million in Nelson’s CBD. But with the rest of Nelson, including the city fringe, Stoke, Tahunanui, and other areas, dragging in a combined $111.6 million, Nelson as a whole far outstrips Tasman for retail spend. Simon says he isn’t concerned about the figures, because as soon as you include the city fringe, the spend is significantly higher than Richmond. “I don’t know why there is this competition with Richmond, they are both very different destinations, Nelson has much more of a boutique feel.”

A man convicted of stealing cars in Nelson has revealed the reason he does it: to teach people a lesson. Police say there has been a huge increase in the number of vehicles stolen in Nelson and Tasman, with around half of those cars unlocked and with the keys still in the ignition. There have been several arrests in relation to car thefts over the past month and Senior Sergeant John Price says one of the “young men” arrested gave a bizarre insight into why he steals cars. “He said he wanted to give people a lesson about leaving the keys in their car – that’s how easy it is. It might be admirable that he wants to help educate the community but we think we can do it in a better way.” John says more than 50 per cent of reported car thefts are cars that are unlocked. “Some offenders walk around communities trying door handles. If they are locked they leave them alone – that’s the reality.” The thefts are happening across

They aren’t being stolen for parts or to try and sell, says John. “They’re taking it for a joy ride, using up the petrol, damaging the vehicle and then dumping it. “A car can be some people’s biggest asset, therefore it can be very traumatic. It’s the thing they have worked hard for, earning money to buy, so we really want people to try to look after it as well.” The majority of the cars are stolen from outside homes, up driveways and even in open garages. Here’s some stories from www. Freak wind rips off verandah: Murray Sinclair of P&M fireplaces got a shock last week when he arrived at his shop to find the verandah blown off. The 12-metre verandah was torn off the building in a freak gust at 3.20 am. Nelson weather reported the wind reaching speeds of 69 kilometres per hour. “I couldn’t believe it, it wasn’t just some signage, it was the whole verandah, and that thing has weathered quite a few storms,” says Murray. “The gutter has rolled in on itself and dropped to the ground.”

Demo uncovers late father's signature House prices increase in Nelson
Simon Bloomberg On June 20, 1962, Gerry Newport signed a piece of plasterboard and put it inside the wall of the house he was painting. Gerry, who passed away in 1999, had been working for Wilkes Construction on the new house on Warren Kelly St in Richmond and like many tradies decided to leave his own time capsule behind. Fifty-three years later, it was discovered, in a remarkable c oincid ence, Gerry by his daughter Newport. Paula Wilks and her husband Peter and son Cameron. “We couldn’t believe it,” Paula says. “We bought this house four years ago as a rental and just moved in this year and started renovating. “Pete and Cameron were ripping out some of the old walls and Cameron saw a piece of Gib with something written on it. Then Pete said, ‘I recognise that writing,’ and it

Photo: Simon Bloomberg. was my father’s. “It only had half the message on it so we rummaged around found the other half and glued it together. “It said GJ Newport, painter 20-7-62 - that was two months before I was born.” Paula immediately contacted her two
brothers Patrick and Jim and sister Christine, and told them about the discovery. She says “they were amazed”. “We knew it was a Wilkes house when we bought it. They built quite a few around this area and dad must have painted a few of them, but this is incredible,”
she says. Now Paula plans to put a time capsule of their own in walls before they finish renovating the house. “I think I’ll put a copy of the Nelson Weekly with this story in the wall. It will be interesting to see if anyone finds that in 50 years.”
Nelson homes have increased in value by 8.7 per cent, according to the latest rateable valuations which have just been released by Nelson City Council. The revaluations are undertaken by Quotable Value every three years, on behalf of the council. Gail Smits from Quotable Value delivered the findings to councillors at Thursday’s full council meeting, saying the figures show “very much a good news story.” The lower end of the residential market has seen the biggest lift, which Gail says is very much driven by first home buyers, investors and interest rates. “Nelson is doing pretty well residentially,” says Gail. “The lower end of the market has come up.” Wakatu and Annesbrook have had the biggest increase in capital value with 12.5 per cent growth, followed by Nelson South and Bishopdale with 11 per cent growth. Washington Valley and Abraham Heights have also shown good growth. Nelson North, The Glen and Cable Bay have had the least movement, with a 3.8 per cent increase in capital value. Other suburbs with lesser increases include the Port Hills, central Nelson and The Wood.

Extra $700k approved for park Locally Owned and Operated
Nelson City Council has given the go-ahead for a further $700,000 to be spent on the Rutherford Park redevelopment, which now brings the total budget for the project up to $3 million. At Thursday’s full council meeting, councillors voted to support the un-budgeted expenditure, which will go towards improving the parking, roading and landscaping at the park, in conjunction with the Trafalgar Centre reopening project. Councillors were presented with two concept plans to pick from at the meeting, which were designed by Irving Smith Jack architects and Nelmac, in collaboration with council officers and input from the urban design panel. Option one, although costing around $600,000 more than option two, was favoured 12 votes to one, with only deputy mayor Paul Matheson voting against it. Councillors said that option one met the objectives better than option two, creating a larger green space to the north and east of the Trafalgar Centre. The extra $700,000 will go towards a parking area

for around 165 carparks at the south side of the main building, leaving more room to the north west of the site for ‘flexible use’ open spaces. There will a big focus on aesthetics and landscaping, a new road, and paths connecting the Trafalgar Centre to the city. The budget also allows for a 10-space paved carpark and turning bay outside the main entrance to the centre, and a ‘hammerhead’ area for utility vehicles. Existing trees will be retained, and there is a big focus on ‘more green space and less carparking,’ with the flexibility to use the green space for carparking in the future, if required. Councillor Pete Rainey called it an “exciting plan” at Thursday’s meeting and was heartened to hear they would be able to provide larger green space areas, as well as retaining the existing trees that provide shelter for the tennis courts. Councillor Eric Davey also said he was very happy with option one, but did express concern about there not being
sufficient parking or enough space for trailers, trucks and buses to turn around. Council parks and facilities asset planner Andrew Petheram said it was “merely a concept design” and all those details will be looked at when they move into the detailed design. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says that the expenditure represents a long term investment for the future of the city, and that in terms of the scale of the project, the extra funding is acceptable. “We want to get the Trafalgar Centre open for use, and the Rutherford Park development is an integral part of that,” she says. “This concept is well thought out and developed and will play a significant role in the success of the Trafalgar Centre as a recreational facility and a community asset.” The additional $700,000 will be funded from the long term plan’s $2 million roading, car parking and landscaping allocation, and $300,000 from the walking and cycling allocation, bringing the total budget to $3,005,000. The concept will now go in to the detailed design phase.

After being inspired by dancers on YouTube, Nelson sisters Zariyah and Shylah Andrews are now inspiring others. Zariyah and Shylah make up dancing duo ‘ICONIC’, and recently achieved minor celebrity status after a video of them dancing was picked up by the global company, World of Dance. World of Dance placed the video on their YouTube channel on November 6. Since then, the video’s hits have skyrocketed, reaching over 23,000 within the first five days, the video has now received over 25,000 hits. The girls could not be more thrilled and want to thank their dance teacher Ashley Belk and everyone who watched their video. “It’s really cool that people from all over the world can see us dance, says Shylah, 7. To say that the girls love dancing is an understatement and, as for their favourite style, the girls say hip-hop wins hands down. “I love it, you just feel the music and be yourself when you dance, says Shylah. The video dance is the same routine that won them the Shakedown competition earlier in the year. Mum Nicole Andrews says it wasn’t long after Zariyah began classes that Shylah wanted to follow in her big sister's footsteps. “Shylah used to

watch Zariyah’s lessons and she started doing the moves on the side, she’s always struggled with her balance because she had a contorted pelvis so she never really had good rhythm. Then I saw she could pick up the moves a little bit so I just put her in the class, and then she started doing really well and her balance improved. So basically, it’s changed her whole body structure. Nicole says she is so proud of her girls. “They just want to dance every day, they’d do it all the time if they could. “It’s amazing to see their success grow, and it’s really special for Shylah, seeing her balance and her coordination grow just from doing something she enjoys, that’s a huge thing for me. For video of this story, visit

Youth bands, artists and performers will take the stage for a series of summer time outdoor concerts at Tahunanui Beach. ‘Tahuna Rocks’ hits the Tahunanui Youth Park ‘Woodstock Stage’ for two shows, on Friday, December 4 and on Saturday, January 30, between 5 and 9pm. Organiser Paul McConachie from Youth and Community Works says the first show coincides with the end of the school year. “This is an excellent excuse to come out and celebrate the start of the summer holidays,” he says. “We have a really epic line up on stage and a heap of ‘have a go’ activities, along with some sweet prizes also up for grabs.” Tahuna Rocks is a free youth event and is strictly alcohol and other drug free and aimed at 15-18 year olds. It will feature various local high school bands. Security and H&S event workers will be on hand to ensure a happy and healthy event for those who come along.

Nelson Police are praising a smart phone app that helped to save a life in Stoke last Wednesday evening. Officers were alerted to the scene at the Stoke tennis courts after a woman in her 60’s collapsed while playing a social tennis match and went into cardiac arrest. Nelson Bays Area Commander Inspector Matt Arnold-Kelly said when officers responded to the call for help they quickly realised that the woman was in need of urgent medical attention and started CPR. “They used an app on their smart phones to locate the nearest defibrillator, which was at a local supermarket,” he says. “Thankfully, they were able to get the defibrillator and successfully re-started the woman’s heart.” Senior Sergeant Blair Hall says it was only a matter of minutes from the moment the police were notified until they had a defibrillator on the scene, and the incident highlighted the value of defibrillators being kept in public places. “It’s a really good application, and the more community organisations and businesses that have them, the better,” he says. “It certainly worked very effec-

Twilight gala fun for Hampden St School Jessie Johnston Another successful twilight gala means new classrooms for Hampden St School. From traditional bouncy castles and mini jeeps to the cadet course, crazy hair and plate smash, the event achieved its aim of being a family-friendly festival. Organiser Ngaire Warner said their new additions to the gala went down well with children, the haunted house receiving screams of delight while the fairy grotto transported kids into a mystical forest. This year, organisers also made changes paint | wallpaper | blinds L.J Allen, 5, tackles the Cadet Course at the Hampden St School Twilight Gala on | curtains to the layout of the gala with a mini street Friday evening. Historic House Volunteers, Tuesday, November 10: Maria Anderson from Nelson City Council says they have had a great response from the article in the Nelson Weekly, and now have 12 volunteers for Isel House and almost a full roster to open sometime in December. “We’ve had great interest – it’s been incredible,” says Maria. She says they would still love more people putting their hand up to volunteer at both Isel and Broadgreen Houses, and if they are interested they can contact her at Founders Heritage Park, 03 548 2649 or email maria.anderson@ncc.govt.nz. Nurses Book, Tuesday, November 17: Author of All Guts No Glory, Cheryl Carnahan, says she has had a positive response from the public after her article in the Nelson Weekly, with three books having been sold already. The 373 page book, which was launched on Wednesday, November 11, at the Richmond library, features biographies of 57 Nelson nurses who served in the Great War. The book costs $40, anyone interested in purchasing a copy can contact Cheryl on 544 7684, or it can be purchased at the Genealogy Library at 67 Trafalgar St, Nelson.

construction happening within the school. “It worked really well, we were really lucky that the weather turned into a perfect evening and the mayor was well received as our official guest to open the gala. The whole night had a really nice community feel to it,” says Ngaire. The Hampden St School Twilight Gala managed to raise around $20,000, which will be going towards the fit out of their five new modern learning environment classrooms, along with the refurbishment of their school library. “We just want to thank the community for their support, for making the gala such a great event, it just gets better every year,” says Ngaire.

Mayor needs help: Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese has been obstructed in the excellent goals she was elected on because of seven councillors. These seven councillors continue to vote together and make it impossible for the mayor to advance her agenda. The mayor needs support. Proposals such as the Southern Link will never go ahead so long as Nelson has obstructionist councillors. Next year, ratepayers should look carefully before they reinstate those councillors who have voted as a block to hinder the proper development of the city. Dan McGuire.

Armed with gumboots and gloves, Whakatu Rotary Club members were up to their knees in rubbish and muck on Saturday morning. Working around the tides, the group launched a clean up of Saltwater Creek – along Vanguard St to Anzac Park – pulling everything from plastic to trolleys out of the creek. Project organiser and Nelson City councillor, Brian McGurk, says the creek is an ugly old urban waterway. “This section of our city’s waterways is probably one of our most neglected” says Brian. “Many people probably don’t even realise that this section of Saltwater Creek is a critical part of the region’s waterway and is consequently seen by many as nothing more than an open drain, and it is treated as such.” Taking 30 minutes to cover a mere 50 metres, the clean up is slow, slimy work. Saltwater Creek was once clean and full of fish but now, Brian says,

there’s everything from trolleys, tyres, plastic and heavy metals to effluent and chemical run off. “Carpet is probably the weirdest thing we’ve found so far.” Volunteer Royce Lock says it all collects like a great big sieve. “It’s shocking and disappointing, especially considering that all the trolleys are only fifty yards away from their source.” This is the second time the Whakatu Rotary have cleaned the Nelson waterway, everything pulled has been placed there since June this year. The project was supported by Nelmac, Betta Bins and the Nelson City Council. Nelson City Council’s Jo Martin also came down to lend a hand. “It’s really great that these people give up their own time to help look after the Nelson environment.”

WiFi project to teach youth and lower costs
Like us on
A project to “mesh” together wireless internet connections in Victory is the first of its kind in New Zealand and will lower the cost of broadband access. The project has attracted funding from the Ministry of Social Development and will see youth in Victory work with business owners and community groups to design, build and operate the WiFi Mesh network. A “WiFi mesh network” consists of routers interconnected in a mesh. Some of the routers are connected to the internet, thus sharing the internet access among many and lowering the price. This type of network has been established in many communities worldwide but it will be the first one in a local community in New Zealand. The network is intended to bring cheaper internet connections to a part of Victory, whilst the young participants learn entrepreneurial business skills. The project is hosted by YMCA Nelson, and its executive director Gary Cox says community and social engagement is be-
Nelson
coming more digital and for communities such as Victory Square it is important that they have affordable access to the digital world or they “risk being left out”. The youths will take their WiFi Mesh business through the nine-week programme and get expert advice on finance, marketing and sales. Innovate’s manager Matthew Peacey says the project is hugely exciting, as the region won the funding from a competitive national pool. “We need to excite the next generation to the huge opportunities that exist for those with entrepreneurial
skills and drive the next generation of entrepreneurs.” The project is still open for those who might have suggestions on how they can contribute or build on the project and there are still spaces available on the project for youth (16 to 24 years old), so if you are keen to get involved, contact Gary Cox on 021 548273 or garycox@ymcanelson.org.nz. To be on the youth team you do not need to live in Victory community, or be a tech savvy - the most important thing is that you are keen to get involved and be part of an innovative start-up project.

Hospital picking up on family violence Burns, fractures and bruises are just some of the signs of family violence seen by Nelson Hospital staff, who have identified 198 cases of family violence since January this year. Nelson Hospital has had guidelines for identifying family violence cases but those have expanded significantly since the nationwide Violence Intervention Programme (VIP) was introduced to district health boards in 2007. The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board now has two family violence coordinators who train staff to recognise the signs of family violence and ensure that the relevant social agencies become involved. Nelson co-ordinator for VIP Gina Lyon says the programme has resulted in an increased awareness of the social issues that impact on health. She says "family violence wasn't always seen as a health problem" but now that's changed dramatically. "People would come in with a broken leg and we'd address the broken leg and not what else might be going on with it," Gina
Simon Bloomberg Reporter
simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz
says. "It was a very medical model that was not really looking at the social issues that might be impacting on their health." Although the VIP programme is focused on child protection and partner abuse, the board's director of allied health, Hilary Exton, says that screening for elder abuse is also being introduced. Hilary says they "have to be able to cover all types" of family violence and have "good policies, procedures, training and auditing" in place to ensure the programme is successful. Hilary says VIP was initially implemented in the emergency department, paediatric in-patients, maternity, public health, alcohol and drugs and mental health, because they see the most cases of family violence. It has been so successful in those departments it is now being rolled out into other areas of the hospital and its community services. "It's working well and we have to
Nelson Marlborough District Health Board's Gina Lyon, left, and Hilary Exton with the board's anti-domestic violence pledge signed as part of White Ribbon Day. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. acknowledge how well the staff support the programme. The nurses and medical staff and social workers involved in the programme are doing a great job." Gina says it is now standard procedure to screen all women, admitted to the key departments, for partner abuse. She says women are responding positively to the programme because they "trust that health professionals will know how to
respond appropriately and help them through the process". "They are really accepting of it. It might not be them but they understand it might be someone who is a victim of abuse and they say 'it's not me, thanks for asking'.' Although many cases of family violence are obvious, Gina says staff are trained to "pick up indicators" in the less obvious cases. Identifying the increasing number of elder abuse cases can
be especially challenging. "We see bruises with finger marks, burns made by cigarettes and whip marks from jug chords. Fortunately, there's not a lot in Nelson but we do see it and staff are really good at picking that up "But sometimes it's not as obvious - it might be something the patient says or how a parent and child are interacting. Elder abuse can be quite difficult because often the elderly feel like it is their lot and don't say anything. "We've identified cases of financial abuse after finding out they haven't been taking their medicine. When we ask them why they say because a family member who takes care of the finances might not be giving them money." However, Hilary stresses that family violence is a community issue and the hospital is just one of many agencies working together to combat the problem. "Our programme has close collaboration with police, Child Youth and Family, Women's refuge and Stopping Violence Services. No one service can address this problem and there's some really good work happening out there and that's really positive."

Climate parade in Nelson
Nelsonians will join millions worldwide in the largest climate mobilisation in history, this Saturday. At 10am, people will gather at Tahunanui Beach for a 5km colourful green heart parade into the centre of Nelson. The parade will arrive at Anzac Park at 12pm for an hour of speakers and entertainment. The event, along with others around the world, aims to encourage world leaders to make significant pledges on carbon emissions at the UN Climate Change Summit in Paris next week. The summit is the biggest this decade with the ambitious target of a global agreement to prevent the current trajectory of catastrophic global warming. “We want this to be day to celebrate what we love about Nelson, but with the underlying message that this could be lost if action isn’t taken” says local organiser Emily King. “The Nelson-Tasman coastline is loved by all, but the expected sea level rise would change this beyond recognition. Nelson City Council is working hard to plan for such an event, but action is needed at a national and international level in order to prevent this from happening in the first place”. On the day, people are welcome to join the parade as it passes i-SITE, the Nelson Market, or go straight to Anzac Park for 12pm and set up a picnic. People are being encouraged to travel to the event by public transport or on foot.

Founders gets into Christmas spirit Brittany Spencer
Founders Heritage Park was full to bursting at Sunday’s Great Christmas Market. Event organiser Paula Leighton says they had over six thousand people walk through the door. The market provided the perfect opportunity to do some Christmas shopping, enjoy the live music and have a picnic lunch in the park. With around 120 boutique stalls including art, homewares, crafts, clothes and food, this is the Christmas market’s biggest year yet. “We’re definitely not going to go any bigger, it’s about quality, not quantity,” says Paula. “The crowds were steadier and people lingered a lot longer, they enjoyed sitting out-
side on the grass and listening to the buskers.” Penny Royal, owner of children’s clothing label Smuck, says there were people queuing to come in well before 10 am. “When the gates first opened this morning there was a great whoosh as everyone piled through.” Nelson’s Mel Harnetty says she has been every year since the Great Christmas Market began four years ago. “It definitely gets better and busier each year,” says Mel. “There’s such a variety, and this year has a nice, all-day atmosphere, I don’t want to leave.” This year, a $2 entry fee for anyone over twelve was introduced, with proceeds going to the KidsCan charity.

We’ve all heard about the house that Jack built, but what about the house that Douglas Building Contractors built, along with a lot of support from other local trades of course. Ange and Andrew Douglas have embarked on a project that has united businesses within the local community to create a ‘House for Hospice.’ Last year the Nelson couple, who own and operate Douglas Building Contractors, had the brilliant idea to construct a house in the Marsden Park subdivision and donate the profits from the homes sale to the Nelson Tasman Hospice. Hospice provides a variety of specialist care services for people who have a life-limiting ill-
ness, supporting them, their families and carers through illness, death and bereavement. Their services are provided at no charge to patients and their families, and are available to everyone, regardless of age, ethnicity, culture and gender, with care being provided to people in their own homes, aged care facilities and in the Hospice In-patient Unit. A lot of people have experienced first hand the vital services that Hospice offers, either with their family members or friends, which made it the perfect cause for Ange and Andrew who wished to focus their support on a local charity, keeping the profits within the community.

The houses construction was possible thanks to many generous businesses and individuals and benefited a great local charity.
There’s no doubt the project has required significant financial commitment from suppliers and contractors, who have contributed to the project by working at cost, holding off on payment until after the house is sold, or donating their time or materials. Construction on the house started in June this year after Marsden Park developers provided the section at a lowered price and the Nelson City Council agreed to postpone the building consent fees. It’s taken around 22 weeks to complete the home, including landscaping, and everyone involved has done a great job to get the building ready for the November deadline. Now the 230 square metre home is ready to welcome its new owners and Andrew is extremely proud of
what the House for Hospice team has achieved. “I think it’s great, it’s a testament to a lot of Nelson businesses who have come on board with it. A lot of them have incurred costs and held costs for a long time,” he says. “It’s great to see people helping people and a lot of generous businesses and individuals.” The house features four bedrooms, two bathrooms, two living areas and a double garage, plus, it will be high-spec with added extras including tiled showers, and a tristone kitchen bench. Now that construction has been completed, the home will be opened up to the public this weekend so that everyone can see the hard work that has gone into this special project. Starting from the ground and working
up, there are a huge number of charitable local businesses to thank – including ITM Nelson who delivered the frames; the concrete floor was poured with the help of Concrete Pump Services, Carter and Sons Concrete, Concrete Cutter and Higgins; the windows were installed by Nulook Nelson and Pink Fit Nelson installed the insulation. Galbraith Group took care of the exterior with plastering and painting, the teams from Plumbing Services, Richmond Locks and Alarms and Telfer Electrical also all played a vital role in the homes construction. “We just want say thanks to everyone, for supporting us as a business and getting in behind and helping a good cause. the businesses that have helped a good local charity. If you’re looking at doing anything, support those that support the community,” says Andrew. There will be two open home opportunities available this weekend, so make sure you come along and have a look and admire what teamwork and our fantastic local businesses can achieve. The first open home will be held on Saturday, November 28, from 10am until 3pm at 58 Sanctuary Drive. Everyone involved with the build will be there to celebrate, along
with the local radio, plus, there’ll be a sausage sizzle if you get hungry. The house will also be open for a second viewing on Sunday, November 29, from 1pm until 3pm. People will also get the opportunity to peek inside the home thanks to a 3D walk through that will soon be available on Douglas Building Contractors Facebook page. Anyone interested in looking through the house after the two open homes can do so by appointment with Mitch Wilson from Mike Pero Stoke.

Organisers hail ‘biggest A&P Show’ ever The weekend’s Nelson A&P Show was a roaring success, say organisers. Event organiser Annette Robinson says it was the biggest show they’ve ever had. “We had upwards of 14,000 people come through, I’ve never seen two days like the ones we had,” says Annette. “There were queues of cars down Queen St just waiting to come in, and the paddocks were absolutely loaded with cars, it was really humming.” Even winds comparable to that of Wellington couldn’t damper the event as a steady stream of families continued to pour through the gates all weekend. “We didn’t expect the wind we got, it didn’t put spectators off but we did have to cancel some of the equestrian events for health and safety reasons which is really unfortunate, but thankfully nothing else was affected,” says Annette. Children were either running around looking at the animals, munching on treats or getting dizzy on rides, while the adults flocked to watch men sweat it out at the shearing, wood chopping and Strongman competitions. “There were lots of people watching the exhibits and events and heaps of people asking questions as well, and that’s what it’s all about really,” says Annette. Traction engine enthusiast Rex Waddington came all the way up from Christchurch with his scale model Fowler to give free rides at the show. “I’ve been covered from head to toe in coal all weekend but I’ve never been happier, everyone loves the rides and I’d taken about 30-odd kids as well as their parents for rides by Saturday lunchtime.” Stoke’s Bernie Leckie says she enjoyed the weekend, “My husband and I have just been wandering around enjoying everything, it’s been lovely.”

Kids to take over market stalls Kate Russell A Christmas market to be held in Victory next week won’t be your everyday market – the stalls will be run by local kids. The twilight market is to be held at Victory School next Wednesday evening, and stalls will range from crafts, baking and second-hand goods. Victory Community Centre's programme and facilities coordinator Rob Brown says the idea is to get kids to design, create and sell their own things. “It’s a great opportunity for kids to get involved and we want to see enterprising kids getting out there and turning a profit,” he says. It costs $5 to book a site, with the idea that kids should be able to make their money back, plus more, which they get to keep. Rob says they are also encouraging schools, kindergartens and pre-schools to get involved, as it’s a great way for them to fundraise. One brother and sister duo, Lea and Lukas Bare, with the help of their mum, have been working hard on making home-made Christmas crackers, origami Christmas trees and decorations for their stall. They’ve predicted that if they

The community centre will also be holding a car boot sale on the same evening, with the proceeds going towards the centre. Also on offer will be
performances, games and delicious food. The kids twilight Christmas market and car boot sale will be held at Victory Primary School on Wednesday, December 2, from 5pm – 7:30pm. To book a site, please contact 546 8389 or rob@victory.school.nz.

Copy of a photograph of a man in military uniform. From searching the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph Database and Archway only one man named Sharland was identified who was not a member of the Royal Flying Corps or previously identified as other men depicted on negatives in the Nelson Provincial Museum Collection. This man was Lieutenant Francis Henry Sharland (serial no. 819186 and 5/9/62). It is therefore thought the man depicted on this negative could be Lieutenant Francis Henry Sharland. Sharland was born on 5 October 1884 in New Zealand. He served in both World War One and World War Two. During World War One Sharland served with the 12 Nelson Regiment, the 5th Wellington Regiment and the 12th N & M Regiment. During this time he was promoted

Muritai Market
Saturday 28 November 10am - 2pm, Burrell Park everyone entertained. Along with crafts there will be some secondhand stalls stacked with bargains, while the day's menu will include coffee, tacos, a sausage sizzle, the fruit and vege stall from St Stephens church and, of course, a cake stall for that sweet treat. Country western band Guys and Gals’ will be getting feet stomping and hands clapping with some live music, while Tahunanui School will complement this
Muritai Market is a celebration of the Tahunanui community, with a mixture of food, music, entertainment and stalls bringing everyone together for a great day out. Now in its second year, the market day event benefits everyone involved, from stall holders to the general public and the Tahunanui Community Centre. There will be 25 stalls in total, several of them giving locals the opportunity to showcase their craft creations to the public before Christmas. While the proceeds of the day will be going towards the Tahunanui Community Centre, the overall aim of the market is to draw the community together for a fun, affordable, low-key event. Organisers have been Tahuna community garden volunteers and Tahuna working hard to make Community Centre staff from left, Colleen Moss, Lynne this year’s Muritai Market Taylor, Suzanne Hannen, Judy Robinson, Cushla Vass, a success and they have Sophie Glendorran and Rose Bidois are excited for the heaps lined up to keep Muritai Market.

community market day with the Kapa Haka and choir groups, a welcome addition to the entertainment list. The neighbouring Tai Chi group will also be putting on a demonstration. As for children’s activities, they’ll be spoilt for choice with the market offering everything from over-sized board games to face painting. Tahunanui Community Centre’s Preschool will also be holding an open day during the Muritai Market, allowing parents and children to visit the centre, meet the teachers and see for themselves the learning opportunities available. Burrell Park will be hosting the market day on November 28, from 10am until 2pm, situated in the middle of the Community Centre, and the community’s new garden. Tahunanui School and the Tahunanui Community Centre are both excited about the new community asset, which is tended to by a handful of dedicated volunteers. With an opening ceremony on the way, Muritai Market day is an opportunity to introduce people to the garden and inform them of its role within the community.

It will be a place where people can experience working in a garden with those who know what they are doing, and learn about growing and harvesting fruit and vegetables, hopefully taking some of that knowledge home to their own backyard. The centre aims to offer future cooking experiences with the produce, too. If last year’s Muritai Market was anything to go by, this year's is certainly not to be missed, and with Christmas approaching and stress levels rising, take some time out to enjoy and support this friendly community. Entry is free to the event but bring along your wallet to indulge in some food, drink and activities, with all proceeds going towards a great Tahunanui asset. The Community Centre pays its way with fundraising activities like the Muritai Market, in order to provide a number of programmes including family support, counselling, preschool, playgroup, a book club, walking group and garden group. Make sure you bring the whole family to Burrell Park for the Muritai Market this weekend, you’ll find it right next to the community centre at 61 Muritai St, Tahunanui.

The rugby life of Quin Strange is starting to get pretty exciting, but the man himself is keeping his sizeable feet on the ground. Next year, Quin has a realistic chance of breaking into the ITM Cup with the Tasman Makos, as well as making the prestigious New Zealand under 20 squad. Earlier this month, the 6 foot, 5 inch lock forward was selected for the wider under 20 squad, along with another Tasman representative, Alex Nankivell. But Quin says he’s not getting ahead of himself. “Yeah, it will be a big year, I will get my pre-season good and see where it goes, it’s good to have a bit of motivation for something you strive for.” After starring for Nelson College in the UC Championship in 2014, the same year he made the New Zealand Secondary School team, Quin got his first taste of senior club rugby earlier this year with the Nelson Club. That led to a place in the Makos training squad and Crusaders academy, where he is being mentored by fellow lock and former All Black Chris Jack.
“Chris has been helping me with the one per centers in my game and keeps me on my feet. He is the perfect guy to mentor me. We talk about decision making, when I have the ball and don’t have the ball, what I’m doing there, and he asks a lot of questions.” Despite his humble attitude, Quin is no shrinking violet. He says he has big plans for his rugby career and plans to show that at the under 20 camps. “I want to go as far as I can. I want to be the best that I can be. So, while it’s nice to make it this far, I don’t wanna get there and go all shy, I really wanna make my mark on it. I just want to pick up as much as I can." Quin says playing for Tasman or the under 20s would mean a heck of a lot to him. “It would be awesome to start for your country but I do have to get in that team first, I can’t really get ahead of myself, I suppose. I would also love to make a mark on the Tasman region, I just have to learn off the players who are there now.” In the meantime, Quin is busy working as a community development officer at Tasman Rugby Union and keeping fit for his biggest year of rugby yet.

Fishing with
Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club The Dawn breakers club day for November was a great avo, especially for the Meek family who are all very active fishers in the club. Twelve year old Ollie took out the fish of the month trophy, as he had submitted a great range of fish for the club competition. Ollie fishes at every chance and is also a fan of making up his own rigs used to target a wide range of species. His two favourites to fish with are either a sabiki, or a stray line out the back, which tends to be very effective. And to top it for the family, Ollie's mum Tracey took out the lucky draw cash prize for the club day. The water temp is rising nicely now, which is seeing some nice sized fish arrive in the bay. Interested in fishing? Why not come join this great club to meet other like minded fisho's and

One of Nelson's most experienced triathletes, Jon Linyard, showed he is on the comeback trail after winning his age group and finishing third overall in the Tineli Tri at Rabbit Island on Sunday. Jon has always shown plenty of speed in the first two disciplines of the triathlon but has been battling to regain speed on the run after suffering a series of frustrating injuries. But on Sunday, the 40-44 age grouper showed he is almost fully fit, recording a fast 1hr 12min for the 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run. "I'm just pleased to be back," Jon says. "It's neat to be physically fit again and competing." However, Jon says the standout performance of the day came from Waimea College athlete Hayden Squance who won the race in 1hr 4min 13sec. Hayden exited the water in just 13min 29sec, completed the road cycle in 32min 17sec and then blitzed the 5km run in 18min 26sec. "That was a significant race for him," Jon says. "He is much stronger this season and is putting it all together - he has improved his endurance and his technique. "He ran 18min 26sec on that rugged course which is exceptional. His swim was also fast - he's been pushing Thomas

Sam Averill of Christchurch was second and Matt Newbury was fourth, 1min 6sec behind Jon, with Auckland's Ben Eitelberg fifth. Renee Hunt continued her impressive progress winning the women's race in 1hr 19min 36sec. The 40-44 age group athlete completed a 18min 28sec swim, 38min 2sec cycle and 23min 5sec run on her
way to beating second-placed Frances Riley by almost two minutes. The Tineli Tri is a selection event for the ITU Sprint World Championships held in Cozumel, Mexico in September next year. Cameron Jones won the men's spring duathlon, Luke Clotworthy won the men's super spring duathlon, Melanie Chick won the super sprint triathlon and Hunta Sutherland won the super spring duathlon.

19 FEBRUARY 1931 - 22 NOVEMBER 2014 Thank you Mum for all that you have done, you took great care, of your daughter and sons. You loved us all from the very start, with your warm, kind, and loving heart. Thank you Mum, for being strong, While trying to teach us right from wrong. If anytime, we had a problem, you were there to help us solve them. You’d lift us up, when we were feeling blue, thank you Mum, for we could always count on you. You were such a wonderful mother, The love you showed was like no other. Thank you Mum- for your dear, sweet love, Now you’ll watch over us from heaven above. Loved Wife of the late Allan, treasured Mother, Nana, Aunty and Friend. David, Barbara, Peter, John, ForPaul SALE and Family. ProPErTY wANTED
