Simon Bloomberg Police are warning that anyone who throws a missile at a moving vehicle needs to think about the consequences of their actions, after a car was struck by a object on Whakatu Drive near Nelson last week. Richmond’s Brett Nicholls was driving a Toyota Hilux south on Whakatu Drive on Wednesday when an object hit the windscreen, showering him and his passenger with glass. Although Brett didn’t see anyone throwing the can full of drink, it appeared to come out of the bushes on the side of the road just south of the Songer St overbridge. “It gave us a hell of a fright,” Brett says. He says the can “sounded like a gun shot” inside the car. “We didn’t see anyone throw it but there were no other cars around and it seemed to come out of the bushes on the side of the road. We were travelling at 100kmh so it hit with a lot of force - it could have been really dangerous. “I didn’t swerve when it hit but you

Rare NZ history on the auction block Andrew Board Editor

An incredibly rare book collection, owned by a Nelson family for more than five decades, will go under the hammer this weekend. Owned by John and Cynthia Savage, the collection features

a huge number of New Zealand history books and artwork, including many on Maori history. The collection will be auctioned off in over 600 lots, the majority for books but others for samplers and artwork. Warwick Savage, owner of Lipscombe Auction House which will be handling the auction, says the collection is attract-

ing interest from around New Zealand. “You just don’t see collections like this, especially in Nelson. These kind of collections usually go to big auction houses.” Among the titles of books are: Games and pastime of the Maori; A folio of Watercolours by Charles Heaphy; The Butterflies and Moths of New Zealand, and

the rather long title An Album of the Weapons, Tools, Ornaments, Articles of Dress etc., of the Natives of the Pacific islands, Part 1. The collection also features several stunning pieces of Nelson history, including a book titled Gully’s New Zealand Scenery,

The home of the Savages was sold earlier this month at auction for $1.43 million. It was on land originally owned by Captain Arthur Wakefield. The Savages owned the home for five decades. Another book, the New Zealand Settlers Guide, was given to British settlers, giving them an idea of what life was like in New Zealand in the middle of the 19th century. On Nelson, the book says “Nelson is the northern province of the middle island… and like Wellington is prone to earthquakes. The town of Nelson in 1848 contained 263 houses, the rest of the province 342.” Warwick says it’s an honour to auction off such a collection. “It’s regarding as an extremely significant collection and this

From backyard gatherings to public displays, the sky will be illuminated with fireworks this Saturday night as locals celebrate Guy Fawkes. While the colourful explosions make for great entertainment, every year the Nelson SPCA and Rural Fire Network deal with the downsides of the night including fires and missing and distressed animals. Last year fire crews in the Nelson Tasman area were called to 12 fireworks related incidents, six of those on Guy Fawkes night, four during the Christmas/New Year period and two more after that in January and February. “Be careful where you let fireworks off, make sure they’re not near anything that will ignite like scrub, make sure that they’re sturdy and well anchored and make sure you use them all up on Guy Fawkes night, we don’t want any being let off over the Christmas and New Year period, it’s becoming quite a problem for us,” says principal rural fire officer, Ian Reade. While the recent rain has lowered the fire risk, Ian says a few fine days leading up to the

Pets and larger animals are also effected by fireworks and Nelson SPCA inspector, Nicola Blasdale says their safety needs to be a priority on Guy Fawkes night. “If people know their animals are frightened of fireworks we encourage them to plan ahead, even take them out of the area. The problem with fireworks is that they go on for such a long time, it’s not just one night, so we’d like to see the use of fireworks restricted to just organised displays and

on one night of the year only.” Tips for keeping your pets safe include closing all the doors and windows to prevent them from escaping, drawing the curtains and using the television or radio to prevent pets from hearing the fireworks, bringing your smaller animals inside if possible or making sure they have plenty of bedding to burrow into and moving livestock away from areas likely to have firework parties. For those looking to attend a public event, Milestone Homes Top of The South Speedway will be hosting its annual fireworks display this Saturday. Gates open at 5pm.

Tornado hits Appleby nursery Simon Bloomberg

see the path where it went through our property and no one else around here has been affected. “My granddaughter’s trampoline got lifted up and thrown over the hedge and landed about 250m away - it’s in pieces. Luckily the buildings are okay - we’ll be okay.” MetService meteorologist Stephen Glassie says a tornado was also reported in Taranaki on the same day as a result of the unstable weather conditions that moved across central New Zealand. He says the damage at Appleby is very typical of tornadoes which “are very localised” and often occur without being seen and reported. Stephen says the “active low pressure rain system with cold air in the upper atmosphere” that prevailed last Wednesday would have helped form the tornado. Last Wednesday’s weather was the 14th day of rain this month, making it one of the wettest October on record. A total of 223mm of rain had fallen in Nelson by last Wednesday, over twice the monthly average for October of 86mm.

Appleby nursery owners James and Susie Dean are thankful the tornado that ripped through their property during last Wednesday’s wild weather missed their house and sheds. The tornado, which hit at about 2am on Wednesday, sent a trampoline flying 250 metres through the air, smashed two large trees and flattened thousands of young trees in their Lansdowne Rd nursery. Although James says the tornado caused “absolute devastation”, he knows they are extremely fortunate it missed all their buildings. “I woke up about two in the morning when I heard a huge crash,” James says. “I went back to sleep and didn’t think anymore about it until I got up this morning and my son went down to the nursery and came back and said there’s absolute devastation down there. A 150-year-old willow is flattened and a big London Plane tree is down and all of young trees in pots are on their side. “I have never known anything like it. It looks like a tornado has come through - you can

Council staff pay revealed at meeting Andrew Board The salary of Nelson City Council's chief executive has risen to $309,426, according to figures released by the council at last week's inaugural meeting of the new term. Mayor Rachel Reese and all 12 councillors were sworn in at the meeting in front of friends, family and city leaders. Along with four new councillors getting used to the new surroundings, committee chairs were also announced. Ian Barker will chair the governance committee, Brian McGurk and mayor Rachel Reese will jointly chair plan-

ning and regulatory committee, Gaile Noonan will chair community services, Tim Skinner will chair the newlycreated sports and recreation committee and Paul Matheson the works and infrastructure committee. Reese says the councillors are here to serve Nelson. “I want to say to the community that I have met with all of the councillors, and there is an enthusiasm and energy that inspires me as mayor. These are people who have stepped forward for the right reasons to serve their community. Tucked towards the back of the agenda at the meeting was the

remuneration of council staff and elected officials. CEO Clare Hadley is the highest paid staff member, with her salary rising from $300,866 the year before. Reese earned $130,388, a rise of $5500 from the year before. The figures show the council employs 251 people, 163 of those are full time. Six employees are on a salary of between $120,000 and $219,999, with another 13 employees on a salary of between $100,000 and $119,999. Twenty-nine are on $80,000 to $99,999 and 83 between $60,000 and $79,999. The other 119 are on less than $60,000.

Four year old given brand new BMW Brittany Spencer

How do you give a four-yearold boy some independence - you give him a brand new BMW of course. That logic makes perfect sense to Christchurch initiative Go Baby Go who paid a special visit to Founders Heritage Park on Wednesday. Go Baby Go gives specially adapted electric toy BMWs to children with mobility problems, allowing them to explore, move around, strengthen their

muscles with a bit of fun physio and not miss out on any fun. Five children from around the region with varying mobility problems were given cars, and among them was Stoke’s Aidan Brown. Aidan has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a degenerative muscular disease with no current cure but while driving his new car on Wednesday he was just a very excited little boy with a massive smile. “I don’t think we’ll get him out of it,” says Aidan’s mum Nicki. “He was a wee

Taking art to the public, Tuesday, October 25: The Billboard Project, which was part of the Nelson Arts Festival drew to a close on Friday night with an event at Nelson City Framers. Local artist Geoff Noble says they had a lot of interest in the project over the 12 days on site at Founders Heritage Park, with one painting being sold at auction. Port gets behind shoebox gifts, Tuesday, October 18: After their article in the Nelson Weekly, organisers of the shoebox gift collection said they had another half a dozen or more people come forward wanting to fill a box. In total, Richmond Baptist Church received 700 boxes which were sent off on Tuesday. The gifts are going to Pacific Island communities, giving the children Christmas presents to treasure. Expo ‘fantastic opportunity’ for artists, Tuesday, October 18: After selling one of her art pieces on the first day of Art Expo Nelson, artist Kylie Conning continued to enjoy a successful exhibit, selling five pieces in total in the three days the event ran.

Cancer Society manager moves on Former Nelson Cancer Society manager Linda Lucre left last Friday. Photo: Andrew Board.

Nelson’s Cancer Society has lost its long-serving manager. Linda Lucre says she will miss the role after seven years, especially catching up with those who have beaten the disease. “Seeing the patients making it through, 80 per cent of them do, so it’s nice to see them a couple of years down the track and meet their families.” Linda says she proud of the community standing the charity has in Nelson and that it’s in such a strong financial position. She

says seeing people go through the challenge of cancer is one of the toughest parts of the job. The Cancer Society supports patients and families in Nelson with cancer, and hosts major fundraisers, Relay for Life, Daffodil Day and its annual ball. Chairwoman of the society, Alison McAlpine, says Linda will be sorely missed. “It’s been superb working with Linda because I so respect her integrity, her values, her energy, the relationships that she’s built with

the community over her seven years. The increased visibility of the Cancer Society has been largely driven by her and the board have said a lot in the last few days in farewelling her, but we have been really privileged to have her as the leader.” Alison says they had 28 applications for the role and the appointment is “under process”. Linda says she’ll take a few weeks off before starting work to set up a new dental surgery, which is due to open on New St next year.

Last record fair at The Yurt this weekend Andrew Board Buying and selling records at the Freehouse has been essential for record nuts, but this weekend will be the last time -- inside the yurt at least. The record fairs allow anyone to come along with some records to sell or buy. Organiser Grant Smithies says they’ve been a popular place for enthusiasts, since the closure of Everyman Records means there is no longer a record store in Nelson. “It’s a good chance to rummage through those things while you have a good craft ale. It’s a fine combination, if you ask me.” But with the Yurt for sale by Freehouse owners Mic Dover and Eelco Boswijk, it will be the last record fair hosted there. However Grant says they will continue in a different location. “It will be an end of an era event. Each time we do one, more people show up and loads of people drive over from Marlborough. There’s no shortage of record obsessives and I guess it is the main opportunity for record fans to have a good rummage around through people’s record crates, because there is no record store here anymore.” This will be the fifth record fair at the Yurt after it debuted in 2014. Grant says if anyone is interested in coming along to sell some records they just need to give him a call first so he can organise a stall. His number is 546 8335. The fair starts at 2pm this Saturday, November 5, and entry is free.

Wow, I guess you will be wanting summer to arrive soon!! Karen Lynn Sedman. Weka caught in illegal traps: Doc threatens fines for trapping of birds!! Such a shame. These birds are friendly and curious and so cute. Whoever left these traps up should be fined by DOC as they are a protected species. Chaz Snith. Consent for human waste: Currently displayed on the NCC notice board is an application for resource consent to allow untreated human waste into our waterways. This consent allows the company, paid for by ratepayers, to avoid finding a solution to this ongoing problem. I have spoken with many visitors to Nelson who are horrified when they learn of this practice. Our precious waterways are for all to enjoy, including future generations. Unless we take a stand, together as one people, to protect our fragile environment

and wildlife, we are as much to blame as those who commit these crimes against Mother Earth. The signs we have regularly seen erected, advising not to swim or gather seafood while this human waste is openly discharged into waters, do little to reassure that this problem is being addressed. Objections to this consent close on the 7th November. While one can, to some extent, understand the apathy that caused so few to vote in our recent election, this is a real opportunity to make a difference and show we are not prepared to allow our precious water resources to be violated in this manner. Please exercise your rights and summit your thoughts regarding this on the form available from NCC, prior to 7th November. Brian Brown. Nelson kids go ecofriendly with food wraps Kate Russell One hundred and twenty Nelson kids are learning how to make their lunchboxes plasticfree, by creating their own reusable sandwich wraps. Nelson South Kindergarten has been leading a project to make ‘honey wraps’ – an ecofriendly alternative to cling film, which are made from squares of calico and local beeswax. Victory Square Kindergarten and one of Victory School’s junior classes are also involved in the project, which has been funded by The Enviroschools Foundation. Kylie Johnston, head teacher at Nelson South Kindergarten, says the wraps are made by cutting squares of calico, which are decorated by each child with Indian ink and vivid. They are then baked in the oven with melted beeswax and left to dry, and what you are left with is an environmentally friendly alternative to cling film. The wraps are individualised, easy-care, and can also be used

SANDWICH TIME: Greer Balloch, 4, and Wolfe Holmes, 4, of Nelson South Kindergarten show off the honey wraps that they made. Photo: Kate Russell. to wrap baking, cover plates and as lids on jars. Before the project, Kylie says the kindergarten carried out a lunchbox audit to see how much non-recyclable plastic they were ending up with, and they were surprised by how much they were accumulating. "We were seeing a lot of cling film, especially for sandwiches, so the wraps just provide parents with an alternative," she says. Kylie says that since they introduced the wraps in July, they

are seeing much less plastic in children’s lunchboxes, and they are now sharing their knowledge with Victory Kindergarten and Victory School. "Both the children and parents have been really receptive to the idea, and hopefully the idea will follow on with other kindergartens and schools in Nelson." If anyone would like to find out how to make the wraps, you can email the kindergarten at nelsonsouthkindergarten@ntk.org. nz for a recipe.

Tahuna Community Centre's new building opened Jessie Johnston Tahunanui celebrated a significant milestone on Sunday with the opening of the newly-refurbished and extended Tahunanui Community Centre on Muritai St. It was a chance for the community to get together and explore the new facility, beginning with words from deputy mayor, Paul Matheson, centre manager Judy Robinson and Phil Fa’avae. “I thought it was wonderful, I couldn’t believe how well it went, there were lots of people with lots of ideas and it was just so positive,” says Judy.

It has taken several weeks to refurbish the facility with a team of volunteers taking on everything from painting, cleaning, carpet laying and other odd jobs. The centre was gifted the carpet, paint and an oven which volunteer electricians then installed. “We really appreciate the professionalism and quality of the work, as well as the long hours put in by volunteers,” says Judy. “We have been really fortunate that so many people have come forward to contribute their time, donations and furniture towards making this a place that can welcome the whole community.”

The building features a large hall space and separate meeting room, both of which are already home to a yoga group, cards and games afternoon, pilates, a second book club, amateur dramatics and dog training. The centre will also be holding forums to gather feedback and discuss other activities that the community wish to see there. “Tahuna really needs a heart and we’re just growing a bigger heart,” says resident Jane Tambisari. “All these people here today show you how big our heart's become, we’ve got from the very young to the very old, it’s lovely.”

FIGHT4VICTORY

Getting punched in the face for charity is starting to get addictive for some of the Fight for Victory competitors. The Trafalgar Centre will host the third edition of the Victory Boxing fund-raiser on Saturday night with a trio of boxers keen to show off what they have learnt during 14 weeks of training. Nelson Airport sales and marketing manager Sally Russ says, at age 39, she was in the best shape of her life thanks to the boxing training she’s taken on three times a week. She’s even turned the scars of training into a badge of honour. “I had a bruise on my face last week and I was showing it off to everyone. “It’s not the pain of getting hit, but more the shock of it. Sally, who has two stepchildren and a three-year-old daughter, says, while family time had decreased over the 14 weeks she had enjoyed the experience. “It has been tough balancing everything but I feel as fit as I ever have in my life and boxing isn’t hard compared to looking after a three-year-old.” Teacher Simon Mardon always thought he was fit but realised three two minute rounds

of boxing would be something completely new. “I’m used to running 100km a week but boxing is higher intensity and it's constant. “I’ve enjoyed learning something new at my age.” Simon says he was hoping he and opponent

Craig Morice could put on the fight of the night. “I’m sure Craig is ready to go out there and give it everything. “I want to entertain people, I don’t want it looking like two chickens circling a corn cob.”

Personal trainer Corey Boland will likely have the loudest cheering section of any competitor on the night. “Most of my family will be there, you’ll hear them, but I’ll be trying to get business done and then I’ll look to have a beer and a laugh about everything once it’s all done.” Corey says his only instinct is to smile when he gets punched. “You train to avoid the punches, but then when I get hit with one all I can do is smile and it gets you going.” Corey says he believes he has been "bitten by the bug and would be keen to keep boxing after Saturday night. "I've really enjoyed the training, but I'm looking forward to getting between the ropes and entertaining people. "We'll see how Saturday night goes but I doubt it will be the last time I step in to the ring." Tickets are still available for the night where a large crowd is expected to pack the Trafalgar Centre for one of the biggest nights on the Nelson sporting calendar. Money raised will go to help continue the work of Victory Boxing and their work within the community.

Church ticks boxes for elderly Anglican Churches are reaching out to help senior citizens around Nelson and Tasman understand and overcome the challenges of ageing. The Anglican Dioceses has been running a number of activities as part of its Senior's Outreach programme and last week announced it was expanding that to include a series of seminars entitled Ticking the Boxes. The seminars will be held at Anglican Churches around the region and feature guest speakers covering a range of topics relevant to the elderly, including downsizing, healthy eating, home aids and funeral planning. St Barnabas Stoke Church senior's Outreach coordinator Kathy King says the churches have organised the seminars because they want to do something for the community. She says they decided to run the Ticking the Boxes seminars because "people we are meeting and work with have concerns about these issues and it is one way we can help reduce their

fears and worries". "We wanted to share God's love and do something to reach out to the community and also meet the needs of the community," Kathy says. "We initially looked at holding just one seminar but realised it was too big for one session." The first seminar will cover downsizing which is a common issue for elderly and will feature guest speaker Diane Taylor from Summit Real Estate. "Moving out of the family home is a big step and quite often it happens when one of the partners has passed away, so it can be very traumatic," Diane says. "But the process doesn't need to be difficult and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to talk about it at the seminar." The seminars will also cover legal facts, positive ageing services, a balanced view of retirement and life without a car. The series concludes with a seminar entitled Getting a Promotion, which discusses death from a Christian perspective. However, Waimea senior care co-

ordinator Nicola Berthelsen says the seminars will offer more than just useful information. The churches will be providing free food and refreshments and an opportunity for people to socialise and meet new friends. "The elderly can become really isolated, so the social aspects of these seminars will be important too," Nicola says. "We'll be able to pick people up and bring them to the seminars and provide them with lunch and a chance to socialise - we'll let them know there are people out there to help them." Kathy says all the seminars are free and people can just turn up to all, except one at St Barnabas Church on March 15 next year, without booking. Ticking the Boxes will feature 10 seminars, starting with Down-sizing at St Barnabas Stoke Church starting at midday on November 16. It will continue on an almost-monthly basis at different parishes. For more information phone St Barnabas Stoke Church office on 5475631.

Selfless Taylah in line for netball honour Jacob Page Volunteering in sport gave Taylah Kirker and outlet to do what she loved when her body refused to let her play. Two years ago, the Nayland College pupil had just been talent-identified by New Zealand touch rugby, when a sudden netball accident changed her sporting landscape. While on court, the 18-year-old suffered a prolapsed disc in her back, an injury which has taken a long time to come right. Always a keen volunteer, Taylah used the recovery time to increase her volunteer work with her school, as well as touch and netball. Her efforts have seen her recognised with a Tasman Secondary School Sports Award for her contribution to sport and on Thursday she flies to Auckland after being nominated for the New Zealand Netball youth volunteer of the year award. “It’s a big honour to be nominated for an award like this,” Taylah says. “I don’t think anyone ever volunteers to be up for awards, but it’s exciting. Over her time, Taylah has coached and played netball, acted as a DJ, dressed up

She also helps run weekly touch rugby and

has been a key part of sport at Nayland. All not bad for someone who is related to new Silver Ferns standout Te Paea SelbyRickit. “I was always down at the netball courts from a young age and I’ve always enjoyed

being part of things.” Taylah admits spare time has been lacking at times but she wouldn’t change the way she gets involved in the community. She plans to attend Canterbury University next year where she will study mental health science after toying with the idea of going to New Zealand Broadcasting School. “I have a passion for Maori and Pasifika and I chose this (route) because I think I’ll really enjoy studying it.” Taylah says everyone should give up some of their spare time to the community as the rewards are worth it. She says the people she has met and experiences she’s had have made the sacrifice worth it. “I’d encourage everyone to get involved in the community around them.” Taylah says moving away from Nelson will be challenging, but she is looking forward to prioritising her studies and having time to adjust to a new city and lifestyle. “It’s been a big part of my life but sport is what I’ve always been passionate about. “When I move down (to Christchurch) I think I’ll focus more on my studies intialaly but sport is a good way to meet people.”

Midfielder Alex Nankivell has been one of the finds of the Mitre 10 Cup for the Tasman Makos this season. Photo: Barry Whitnall/Shuttersport.

Alex Nankivell proves his time is now Jacob Page The Tasman Makos' 43-27 Mitre 10 Cup Premiership final defeat to Canterbury signalled the end of an era for some key players, while midfielder Alex Nankivell showed why he may be the future of the franchise. By his own admission, the 20-year-old was only looking for game time off the bench and "the odd start" when the season began, but by the final he was a key member of a championship-contending team. If Alex looked left and right, he would have seen two Makos servants in Marty Banks and Kieron Fonotia, who were playing their last games in Ma-

kos colours. However, the 100kg secondfive didn't look out of place despite playing against the province he supported growing up. "This year has been one of massive improvement for me," Alex says. "I wasn't expecting the amount of game time I got but I tried to make the most of every opportunity.” Alex says his second season with the franchise saw him become a more mature player ready to make good on potential instead of cruise on raw talent. "Coming out of the Christchurch Boys' High set-up I was too casual, I expected things to just happen here in year one because that's what I was used

to. "What's happened this year has been the outcome of a lot more hard work, me trying to be a better, smarter player rather than just relying on my size to do the job.” As for the final itself, Alex says he felt Tasman played nervous rugby. "We didn't want to make mistakes, and, playing Canterbury with their history of success, it was something you want in a final but it's a hard task." Alex now has the choice of where to play his club rugby. He also hasn't given up hope of a Super Rugby contract. "There's been some interest but I'll leave that up to my agent to see if anything happens there."

Baseball a big hit in Nelson Locally Owned and Operated

Sporting history was made on Sunday when Nelson’s first baseball game was played on the region’s new baseball diamond at Champion Green at Saxton Field. The code has been introduced to the region by a group of four parents who have come in under the Baseball NZ banner and set up a baseball association. One of those driving the venture is the region’s softball legend, Black Sox Hall of Fame pitcher Marty Grant, who has been passing on his knowledge to young ball players. In its inaugural game, Nelson Orange and Nelson Black squared off, with Black prevailing 4-3 with Matt Lowe and Moab Heynekamp taking the mounds for each team. Nelson Black’s Reegan Lawton entered the history books hitting a home run to centre field as the opening batter. Marty, who is the association’s coaching officer, says the ability

amongst the players was high level, especially in the batter’s box. Taylor Matthews, Ewan Mullett and Levi Chase all stood out at the plate. In the field, Karlos Chase took the mound for team Orange in the second innings and chalked up his first strike out, while Nelson Black’s Laingdon Blacklock’s speed in the outfield took outs in the infield. More than 60 million people play baseball worldwide, and it is now gaining momentum here, with Nelson the sixth region to take up the sport, says Nelson Baseball president Tom Kroos. “We started out as a small group of people with kids who wanted to play baseball, and that was our incentive to set up something in Nelson,” Tom says. “The response we’ve received has been amazing, not only from kids who want to play, but from companies eager to provide sponsorship and former players who want to coach and assist.”

Teams line up after playing Nelson's first official baseball game at Champion Green on Sunday.

Double down on speedway this Saturday Jody Scott A burst of heavy rain just as the cars were warming up put a halt to last week’s racing and CocaCola fireworks display at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway. The fireworks have now been added to the Hanmer Holiday Homes South Island Super Stock Series meeting, so this week it will be twice the bang for your buck. New Zealand champion Shane Harwood will be out to defend his series title against the South

Island’s top drivers. Two dozen drivers will be contesting the HHH series with round two in Christchurch next week and the finals back here on Febuary 11. Jason Fletcher 5c of Hanmer Holiday Homes will be amongst the drivers competing for the title, a regular visitor and former Nelsonian, he will be keen to put on a good showing, Jamie Hamilton 9c will be one to watch, winning all three opening races at Woodford Glen. Brett Nicholls 48n has the Trackman Trophy already in the cabi-

net this year. It is one of the biggest fields of super stocks we will see this year. The Tasman Thunder Stock car team start their journey towards the New Zealand teams title with the Eve of Destruction in Blenheim, before heading to Christchurch to compete in the Mainland Teams Championships a week later. It will be a stern test with a few drivers missing from last year’s group. Check out the club website and facebook page for racing information and updates.

Jacob Page Tasman United coach Richard Anderson says his team will need to find a "ruthless streak" in front of goal if they are to compete with the Stirling Sports Premiership heavyweights. His comments came after his team suffered a 4-0 defeat to title favourites Auckland City, away from home on Saturday in just their second regular season match. For the second game in a row, Richard felt his side controlled the early minutes, but unlike their 2-2 draw with Canterbury United there was no point to be grabbed once Auckland City took the lead. "We went there with the intent to frustrate them and I thought we had did enough early to be in front, and we missed a good opportunity to do that which may have changed the course of the game if it had gone in. "We have to be ruthless in front of goal because chances will be tough to come by.” That ruthless attitude was harder to create when Paul Ifill had to withdraw with a hamstring strain. While the 37-year-old is expected to be back for this weekend's clash with Wellington Phoenix Reserves, he is one of a number of injury concerns Richard says he will have

to monitor this week. Mark Johnston, Nick Smith and Robbie Pearson are all on the injury list, with Mark ruled out for the remainder of 2016. The other issue for Richard has been the defence, which he says was not resolute enough in Auckland. "The disappointing thing was that all the goals we conceded were soft and we will have to improve that area of our game.” Tasman United's round three match against Wellington Phoenix Under-20s will be broadcast live on Sky Sport from 4pm this Saturday. The Tasman United Youth team lost 2-1 to Auckland City Youth in the National Youth League match in Auckland.

Dylan Eginton blasts his way SpOrTS through career-best innings Jacob Page Stoke-Nayland opening bowler Dylan Eginton came one big hit away from an awe-inspiring maiden club century at Marsden Rec on Saturday. The No 7 batsman struck 96 off 45 balls against Wanderers, which included three fours and 12 sixes. In the span of 14 overs after lunch, Dylan had taken his score from one to 96, before toe-ending his would-be century making a shot and skying an easy catch to end the bullying knock. Dylan swung freely to leg side, peppering the square leg and long on boundaries. "Once a couple came out of the middle there was no way

It continued Dylan's strong start to the season with the bat, after he hit 73 in the opening game against Nelson College the week before. Dylan picked up 2 for 34

from nine overs as StokeNayland comfortably defended 307 for 7 declared by rolling Wanderers for 99. The bowling effort also included a hat-trick from Brad Duncan, his second in as many seasons. In the other matches Nelson College defended 130, by rolling Wakatu for 100 after they were 94 for five. Three wickets each to Ben Hazlett and Felix Murray did most of the damage late. Waimea Toi Toi had a 119run win over Athletic College Old Boys, with Waimea defending 197 for 9 declared. ACOB only managing 78 in reply on a pitch which proved tricky to bat on throughout the day despite its placid appearance.
