Turf battle at Trafalgar Andrew Board Reporter

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Nelson’s largest musical concert and the region’s top football team are hastily arranging new venues after Nelson City Council decid-

ed to bring forward its scheduled re-turf at Trafalgar Park in time for next year’s All Blacks game. Opera in the Park and Tasman United were all booked in for major events at Trafalgar Park early in the New Year but are now looking at alternatives after the

council, owners of the park, decided to bring forward a re-turf of the surface by nine months. The Trafalgar Park pitch was badly damaged during the Tasman Makos and Auckland Mitre 10 Cup game in September, due to heavy rain. It has left the pitch in

a poor condition and means that the council couldn’t guarantee the pitch would drain properly in a heavy rain. So councillors decided to move the re-turf, closing the playing surface for about five months, which has forced some groups to

scramble to find a new venue. Opera in the Park, which attracts thousands of people, will now be held at Saxton Field on the cricket oval in late February. Tasman United is due to play four

Mufti prank at colleges Charles Anderson Nelson College for Girls had made it clear that leaving students would not be allowed to take part in any pranks. So, on the last full day for all the students, 18-year-old Libby Neill came up with a plan. The school did allow the girls a mufti day. So yesterday morning, a cohort of about 100 students, from both Nelson College for Girls and Nelson College, showed up to the Church Steps at the top of Trafalgar St. Then they swapped uniforms. “I was like ‘what would be a really good way to finish the year for both schools’,” Libby said. “We thought it would be this cool congregation at the Church Steps to swap uniforms and celebrate.” Nelson College student Erich Eis-Domoni, centre, walks with other students from Nelson College and Nelson College for Girls as they get used to their new uniforms on Monday. games on Trafalgar Park in January and February and the park is the only ground in the region that meets New Zealand Football’s criteria – which means if they can’t play there they will be in breach of their licence. Football bosses described the decision by council last Wednesday as a “live grenade”. “We’re hopeful that the council will work with us in good faith and we’ll have a surface to play on, which is the number one criteria for the team,” says Tasman United general manager Clive Beaumont. The pitch that is likely to get a makeover to bring it up to national league standard is Saxton Field’s number one football pitch, a ground that was also badly cut up during the South Island Masters Games, the same weekend

Tasman United chairman Mark Sheenan says it’s been a tough week trying to “get our ducks in a row”, but he is looking on the bright side. “The positive out of this is that

we’ll end up with a better football pitch at Saxton Field and Trafalgar Park will be in top condition for next season.” Group manager of infrastructure Alec Louverdis says there is money in the budget for work at Saxton Field, but if the cost is more

than what’s in the budget then extra money will need to be found. Relay for Life is another major community event that was booked in to take place at Trafalgar Park. Nelson Cancer Society manager Michelle Hunt says the news gave her “some sleepless nights” when it was announced. Initially council suggested that Relay for Life, the society’s major fundraising event, be moved to Saxton Field. However, Michelle wanted it to be central. “It’s much more accessible and we really want the public to come along.” So the event, on March 17 next year, has special permission from council. Teams will have to camp at either end of the field, rather than lining the sides of it. There is room for about 120 teams. It has also been reduced to a 12hour event rather than through the night.

Mufti prank at colleges FROM PAGE 1 There were skateboards, scooters, shorts and skirts. There were curious looks from passers-by and more than a few obligatory selfies. “We will see how the school reacts,” said Libby. “I think they will get the joke. They said, ‘wear whatever you want’. So, we are.” Nelson College student Madison Daly, 18, wondered why they hadn’t decided to swap uniforms before. “It feels a bit surreal. This is making it a little more surreal. “It feels like you’re wearing no pants.” Would his school get the joke? “They’re going to have to.”

Herbal recipe for success Locally Owned and Operated

Charles Anderson Two years ago Emma Heke dug up her unproductive lawn in Washington Valley and started planting herbs to make into her own teas. “That’s unique,” she says. “Most people buy them in from a wholesaler and sell them in highly-branded bags.” Instead, Heke Homemade Herbals keeps it low key – selling teas only through Facebook and markets. On Friday night, Emma’s hard work in developing the now thriving business was recognised at the Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce Business Awards. The awards were held at the Trafalgar Centre with 420 people coming along to recognise the best of the best. Emma won the innovation award. “I really want to mainstream organic herbal teas, so I make it as affordable as possible.” Emma also helps cafes with their tea menus and has even flavoured breweries’ beer on request. She also says the awards were a great way to take stock of her

Tourism operators were the big winners at awards. Abel Tasman Canyons was judged as the Supreme Business Award Winner after it also took out the Small Medium Enterprise award earlier in the evening. The business offers guided canyon trips in the Abel Tasman, Kahurangi and Mt Rich-

mond Forest Parks. R&R Kayaks won the Start-Up award and Wilsons Abel Tasman won the Large Business award. Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce chief executive Grant Kerr labelled the evening “inspiring”. Grant also paid tribute to the entrants, judges and sponsors and reflected on the growth the region has experienced over the past 12 months, thanks to the tenacity and confidence of businesses in the region. Other winners were McCraes Blinds and Screens (large business excellence), Ngāti Koata Trust (investing in people and skills) and Paradise Brokers (service excellence).

Nelson seafarers to pay respects at Pike disaster anniversary Charles Anderson A delegation of Maritime Union members from Nelson have commissioned a memorial shield to take to the seventh anniversary of the Pike River Mining disaster on November 19. Maritime Union Nelson president Bill Lewis said the seafarers would journey to Blackball to honour the memory of the 29 miners who died in the disaster. “We have friends and fraternal connections within the mining community,” Bill said. “Any progress has been made from those at the bottom, not at the top. Hopefully, that is about to change.” Some of the families of the men who died in the disaster welcomed the new government’s hope of returning their loved ones’ bodies. Labour, NZ First and the Greens, the parties that make up the new government, announced their support for manned re-entry into the mine. “We offer sympathy and sup-

Local couple want law to recognise them as mothers Sarah Harris A local lesbian couple, who conceived their daughter using donor sperm and IVF, want the law to catch up with modern Kiwi families. Jess and Stacy, who don’t want their last names used, are considering petitioning the Government to get their names both listed as “mother” on their daughter Evie’s birth certificate. Fertility Week, which ends today and is run by charity Fertility NZ, aims to raise awareness around what it takes to have a child. The couple, who live in the region, got pregnant using Jess’ eggs, fertilising them with donor sperm and transferring them to Stacy, 31, who carried their baby. The process was complicated slightly because Jess, 28, has Stickler Syndrome - a hereditary condition that causes blindness and joint problems. Because of this they were eligible for public funding to have their embryos tested and then the unaffected ones were transferred for a pregnancy. The birth was also eventful as baby

Jess and Stacy are considering petitioning the Government to get both their last names listed as “mother” on daughter Evie’s birth certificate.

Evie had meconium aspiration she had done her first poo inside the womb and breathed it in. It was only her lack of movement that caused Stacy to become worried and go to hospital where she was quickly taken for an emergency caesarean. “She’s that much more precious

because it could have easily been a tragedy,” Jess said. “She’s 10 weeks now ... You’re tired all the time but it’s so worth it. She’s already growing into this amazing little human. She’s smiling and figured out she’s got hands and feet now, which is hilarious. We’re both enjoying it.”

But the couple became frustrated when it came to filling out official documents. Jess had to list her name under “other” on the birth certificate and under “father” on their online application for an accommodation supplement. “It’s not good. Biologically she’s my child and we’re both equally

Evie’s mother. “All they have to do is put a ‘m’ in front of ‘other’. It’s not difficult.” The couple raised their issues with the Department of Internal Affairs and the Human Rights Commission, but were told that was a “Government-level” problem and offered mediation. They want to petition the Government to change how parents are defined. “They’ve passed the marriage equality bill, surely the next logical step is both people want to have children. We should change legislation around what is a parent. “Government agencies are not quite up to speed with modern New Zealand families.” The couple advise others contemplating having a baby in a similar way to enquire sooner rather than later, ask lots of questions and approach it one step at a time. “In our case, we wouldn’t have Evie if not for the doctor and clinic. We couldn’t imagine life without her. She’s too gorgeous.” - New Zealand Herald

Airport car parking shakeup Charles Anderson All vehicles heading into Nelson Airport will soon have to go through a barrier arm as its redevelopment starts to take shape. From early December, access to the terminal will be through barrier arms located at a central entrance on Trent Drive. Nelson Airport CEO Rob Evans says

moving the barrier arm will give the redevelopment project more flexibility. “It means we won’t need to move the barrier arms each time there is a significant change.” The airport will be using new technology to allow entry and exit with the options of PayWave and credit card as well as the standard ticket dispenser. The airport has been trialling new advanced car park management systems for the past year.

Wedding Album

However, the first 15 minutes will still be free, allowing pickups and drop-offs without charge. There will be a $1.50 per hour charge, capped at a flat daily rate of $10 for all parking. Car parking pay stations will remain at the main entrance to the terminal building. In addition, there will be a new pay station installed just before the final exit barrier. “It’s important that customers who will be parking at the

airport allow some additional time, as parking areas will be stretched through the upcoming peak season,” says Rob. Rob says stage A of the main terminal floor slab and the new control tower structure will also be completed in early December “We appreciate the disruption the building works can cause, but the final result will be something that the Nelson Tasman region can be very proud of.”

French duo say bon voyage to restaurant Charles Anderson Editor

charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz

When Gregoir and Mylene Auphin arrived in Nelson on working holiday visas 10 years ago, they were a young couple from France with a dream. They wanted to create the city’s only French restaurant – inspired by Gregoir’s passion for crepes and Mylene’s long history of working in hospitality. They found a site in the old Zippy’s café on Hardy St and set about transforming it into a slice of France. Seven years ago, La Gourmandise was born. It was a small creperie dedicated to the art of the crepe and gallette. But fast forward and the restaurant expanded and started opening for dinners. As La Gourmandise got bigger, so did their family. The couple have two young children – Jeremie, 2, and Marion, who was born two months ago. “It’s hard to do everything,” says Gregoir. “Restaurants take a lot of time and energy so now we want to take some time to think about what we want to do as a family.” So they have put the restaurant on the market.

Gregoir and Mylene Auphin are selling their French restaurant La Gourmandise to spend more time with their children, Jeremie, 2, and Marion, two-months. Photo: Charles Anderson. “It feels like the right time,” Gregoir says. “It’s really rewarding work and the business is doing well, but we need a break.” He says, while it was his and Mylene’s idea, Gregoir says they were able to be successful because

of the wonderful staff they had over the years. “We couldn’t’ have done it without them.” They also had praise for their dedicated and loyal customers who had made the job a pleasure.

The restaurant has been advertised for the past two weeks, including in France. “There is no other French restaurant in Nelson, so it could be good to keep that going,” says Gregoir. “But that will be up to

the new owner.” He says if they find a buyer the couple will take a month off to think about their options. But more than anything they are looking forward to spending more time together as a family.

Spruce up for Tahuna 'treasures' Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

They may have a new playground in their midst, but the original structures at the Tahunanui Beach Playground are still going strong after more than 50 years. The concrete train, whale, turtles, mushroom tables and seals are all getting a sand-back and a fresh lick of paint, thanks to the Nelson Host Lions Club. Although the playground is owned by Nelson City Council, the Lions were the ones who established the playground back in 1963. Long-time club member Peter Vining says he remembers it well. His father, Phil Vining, was instrumental in setting up the playground, and it was the first major project the Lions were involved in. “I was part of if right from the beginning. It was just bare land back then, I used to have a tractor down there, building up the sand dunes,” says Peter. He says the first playground item

to go in was the train. “There was a club member who had a concrete business – Heck was his name.” He also says the turtles have had quite the life. “Oh, they have been knocked about over the years. One year someone broke all the necks on them and we had to put them back together. “It is surprising the number of little ones who come along and give them all names.” Over the years they have added many other structures, including the castle and the rocket – which was purchased by Phil himself. “There are a lot older folk who come down and say that they played here,” adds Peter. There was even a time when Phil had to install a barbed wire fence that went half way up the whale because some mothers thought it was “too dangerous” for children to climb to the top of it. Peter says the last time the structures were painted was about 10 years ago. “Just when it’s looking dilapidated, we’ll step in. The paint had

of the playground. The $70,000 structure is a Nelson City Council project, and has replaced the old fort that the Lions put in 20 years ago. Peter says he thinks the new playground is alright, although

he “didn’t know what was wrong with the old one.” “But it seemed to be getting well received," he says. A Nelson City Council spokesperson says the whale will be repaired by Christmas.

I recognise those gorgeous boys, man, have they grown up!! Fletch looks like Coop now! I would not have recognised Cooper if I came across him out and about. Lovely to see them. Susan Tonks. When I was young, late 1950s, Forbes E Robinson used to take a bunch of kids to what we called the Back Beach. There used to be high sand hills there. When we played there we found concrete bunkers, they had round slabs on top and empty spaces/rooms underneath. We could tunnel in and use that space as a hut. Someone, (our parents) told us they were old gun em-

placements. I have that understanding even today. However, looking at that concrete I now question that myself. Mind you, at age 7 or 8 all concrete would protect you from bombs and bullets. Dennis Gibbs. Tim, you need to send the boys down to Nelson to hunt for more treasure! I remember reading a history book about Nelson that said about our port and the defences set up in case of attack coming from the water. Wouldn't be surprised if it's some related. Barry Lowe.

High tea and fashion show to raise funds for cancer Kate Russell An afternoon of high tea, fashion, fun and discounted shopping is coming to Morrison Square this week - all to help gynaecological and breast cancer patients in Nelson. The fundraising event is aiming to raise money for the Nelson Regional Breast and Gynaecological Trust, and Morrison Square manager Angela Leonard says tickets are selling fast. "We only have 50 tickets left out of 150 – lots of people are buying tables and making it an extended lunch break." It is the second year that Morrison Square has run the event, which last year raised $26, 471 to help buy a sentinel node probe that allows doctors to assess the spread of breast cancer. Angela says they have had "amazing" support from local businesses, who have donated food, money and their time. "This event wouldn’t be possible without them." Some "well-known" local business people will be strutting their stuff as fashion models and there will also be a charity auction, guest speakers and goodie bags. "It will be a really fun and relaxed atmosphere," adds Angela. "I think that everyone has been touched by some kind of cancer, and it is great we can keep this money in the region to support this cause. We are proud to support these guys - long may it continue." The High Tea and Fashion Show on Morrison will be held on Thursday November 9 from 12:30pm – 2:30pm. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased from Morrison Square Centre Management Office (above Morri St Cafe).

The Child Cancer Foundation Nelson is set to benefit by thousands of dollars when Nelson housebuilding company Homes By Orange builds and sells a home for the charity next year. Homes By Orange launched its Charity Build fundraiser in August when it announced it would build a $258,000 house at Katania Heights near Brightwater for cost and donate the proceeds from the sale to charity. The Child Cancer Foundation was chosen as the supreme winner by a people’s choice with 1293 votes and will receive all the profits when the house is auctioned next year. Homes by Orange managing director David Orange says they are “really thrilled” for the Child Cancer Foundation, which does such great work in the region. David says the foundation provides strength and comfort to families, parents and children impacted by child cancer in a whole raft of ways.

“They will be able to put the funds to good use,” he says. Nelson SPCA came a close second and the Fifeshire Foundation was third. Both charities will receive a $1000 donation from Homes by Orange. General Manager Jo Neale says they will build and auction the popular Pohutukawa home plan with all proceeds going to the Child Cancer Foundation. The house will be built at cost and suppliers would be challenged to help keep construction costs at a minimum to increase the proceeds for the charity. “Lot 49 Katania Heights is in a fantastic location,” Jo says. “So, after the house is sold we would hope to be able to donate significant proceeds, depending on the market at the time, and any supplier discounts we can get over the line.” Jo says the team was “overwhelmed” by the public response to the competition which attracted almost 2600 votes. The house is expected to be completed by the end of next year and auctioned once it’s finished.

Riverside pool has undergone a number of renovations throughout its 90 years, with little of the original pool complex remaining, apart from the building's frontage and the pool itself.

The opening of the Municipal Pool (Later to be renamed Riverside Pool) in November 1927.

For many, swimming in Riverside Pool was a big part of growing up in Nelson and the source of many happy memories.

The opening of the Municipal Pool was very well attended and, even though the initial budget didn’t stretch to heating the pool, a few took the plunge. Riverside Pool continues to be a much-loved and well-used facility in Nelson and the source of many special memories for locals and visitors throughout its 90-year history. Originally known as Nelson’s Municipal Pool, its official opening in November 1927 was well attended by locals with mayor of the time, W. J Moffat, leading the ceremony. Given the economic situation at the time and severe unemployment within the community, it was a large undertaking for the council, with the idea for the pool first proposed in November 1912. Land was set aside alongside the Maitai River for the project, however construction was delayed with the start of World War 1. From June 1926, the city engineer had been instructed to find work for a growing number of unemployed men in Nelson, the municipal pool project being a great help. A special Baths loan of 8000 pounds was also raised to assist with construction, although this didn’t stretch to heating the pool. When the Municipal Pool opened in 1927, it was one of the finest in New Zealand and was used to host a number of national swimming championships. Despite the temperature, it was a much safer and more inviting venue in which to learn to swim, compared to the waters of Maitai River where schools had previously held their swimming classes. In 1932, Harry Davy became the pool superintendent. He had a passion for swimming and during his term up to 10,000 children were taught to swim. Early morning swim training would take place while he cleaned the premises with

a high-pressure hose, which would occasionally be turned on any swimmer who wasn’t putting in 100 per cent. He was universally known as Uncle Harry and he ran Riverside Pool with an iron hand, spending 36 years as the pools superintendent before resigning in 1964. Riverside pool has undergone a number of renovations throughout its 90 years, with little of the original pool complex remaining, apart from the buildings frontage and the pool itself. The pool was made shallower in order to help with swimming lessons and heating was installed, first oil and then electric. A $230,000 roof was built in 1986, with the modern-day pool also including a fitness centre. Today, Nelson City Council contracts out the management of Riverside Pool to Community Leisure Management (CLM), which continues to encourage everyone to learn to swim and make the most of the historic facility. Riverside Pool receives around 11,000 to 12,000 visitors per month, including loyal fans who have enjoyed its waters for years. One local parent recalls her children learning to swim at the pool, “and consequently we spent a lot of days at “the Munis” as we called Riverside. In the sixties, Ray McConchie, or “Bonzo”, as he was affectionately called, was the manager who lived in a little house over the driveway from the pool. Every morning at 6:30am a neighbour and I used to take our eight girls in their pyjamas and dressing gowns to McConchie’s house, who used to give us the key to the back door of the pool. We would enjoy the pool all to ourselves. By the time Bonzo came in it would be time to take the girls home to get ready for school. It was such fun and my children reminisce frequently about

Nayland College students were making do with the waistdeep, 18m pool at Nayland Primary School and with Broadgreen Intermediate set to open in 1971, Nayland was the perfect area to build the new facility. Major fund-raising efforts were held to raise the community’s $200,000 project share with construction beginning in 1975. The Nayland Pool complex, including lane pool, diving pool and boards, toddler pool and teaching pool, was finally opened by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Alan Highet, before a crowd of around 1000 people in December 1977. their great days at Riverside Pool.” Paul and Vonda Clements also recalled the pool's carnival nights. “About once a month carnival night was held, which was very well supported by the public. All the officials were dressed in white and on occasion one would slip and fall in the pool, to the great amusement of the spectators. The competition was strong, with a lot of enthusiastic cheering and excitement. The evening always had diving and water polo, with crazy diving by disguised clowns bringing the evening to a climax.” While Nayland Park Pool hasn’t quite reached the impressive age of 90, it’s still proud to have served the local community for the last 40 years, also managed by CLM. The population of young families in Stoke had grown steadily throughout the 1950s, so the need for a community swim-

Looking to buy your first car, purchase a people mover for a growing family or a 4WD to meet the needs of your outdoor lifestyle? Its moments like these you need Monty’s. People might not be familiar with the Monty’s name when it comes to car sales, but it’s certainly no stranger Jo Doran to Nelson. Once upon a time, Monty’s ran alongside its parent company Houston Motors. It was established by Houston’s former owner Peter Bone to be a yard specialising in vehicles up to $15,000 and took its name from Montgomery Garage which used to operate in what is now Montgomery Carpark, back in the 1960s. Now Monty’s is back and ready to meet the needs of those looking to purchase affordable trade-in and imported vehicles. “We’ve taken cars off our two main yards and bought them over to Monty’s, which puts all our similarly priced vehicles in one place,” says Houston Motors general sales manager, Arron Cox. “We really like the concept of quality vehicles and old-fashioned service, so that’s what Monty’s is all about.” Monty’s will have up to 30 cars on the yard at one time, just come and see them for the perfect fit for your motoring needs. “At Houston Motors, we’re trading around 30 cars a month so there’s always new stuff coming into the Monty’s yard,” says Arron. Instead of wholesaling these cars off to other dealers, people can now come and experience the same knowledgeable and reliable service that they’d receive at Houston Motors, when looking to purchase a used vehicle. “At Houston Motors, we always look after our customers and the same values apply to Monty’s. The yard stocks quality vehicles but if something goes wrong, we’ll make it right.” Jo Doran will be running the yard and has years of experience specialising in this market. Accredited in all aspects of finance and insurance, she’ll get you on the road in your new car the same day you buy it. Monty’s will also have a range of dollar reserve vehicles on Trademe, a great option for backpackers looking to pick up a cheap set of wheels for their great New Zealand road trip. Monty’s has a car for everyone so come and see Jo Doran today at the yard on 186 Rutherford St, just next door to Houston Motors.

Learning to swim is one of the most important skills a child can learn, helping them stay safe in the water so they can enjoy spending time around our beaches, rivers and pools. Jordy Hutty has been teaching children to swim for over nine years and says she enjoys seeing the smiles on her students faces when they achieve their goals. As the owner and operator of Pattison Swim School, Jordy has always loved helping children gain confidence around water and encourages parents to book their children into the school’s upcoming classes. Jordy strongly believes that the success of their students is down to the two-week intensive programme, along with a friendly and supportive team of swim instructors. Pattison Swim School’s staff are passionate about creating stronger, safer swimmers, in a child-centred, nurturing environment. The swim school offers classes from two school pools throughout Nelson, Hampden St School, which offers a unique split-level learn to swim pool suitable for preschool and primary-aged children, and Clifton Terrace School. Every few weeks we catch up with a Nelson personality at either Burger Culture or the Vic and Rose to see what is happening in their lives. This week we speak to former radio announcer Breffni O’Rourke who hung up the microphone last week after more than 20 years in the business. Q: What was your first job? A: I was working in Christchurch and wrote commercials and did the late night ‘Dr Love’ radio show in the evenings. When you are 22 and don’t know anything about love, it’s quite funny. Q: What did you like about the work?

We catch up with former radio announcer Breffni O’Rourke who is now working with Age Concern. Photo: Charles Anderson.

A: Right from the get go, people say that I have a “bus stop face” – that people would tell me anything if they sat down at a bus stop. That transferred to my voice with people telling the most amazing stories about their life. That’s what I loved. I got hooked on that.

body. I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and trying to get that right while your body is off its rhythm is impossible. So, I’ve known for a while that I needed to stop.

Q: Why did you leave the business?

A: I’m still waking up at 4am. My body isn’t used to it and my cats are used to being fed at 4am, so they start screaming at me. We will both need to adjust.

A: Do you want to get up at 4am for 20 years? It messes with your

Q: Are you enjoying sleeping in?

Q: What’s your new job? A: I love radio but there was nothing really anything else that rocked my boat. Then Sue Tilby would come in from Age Concern and talk to me about all these really interesting things – like elderly sexuality and elder abuse. I really found it fascinating. I knew that I would work with her one day. Q: Why the shift?

A: There comes a time in your life that you feel like you need to give back a bit. There are just too many people who are lonely, by themselves. My partner was at Richmond Mall recently and there was an old guy sitting having his lunch and these teenagers came up to him and started harassing him and giving him a hard time. My partner grabbed another chair and sat down next to him and told the teenagers that they were having lunch together and told them to get lost. It turns out that the old guy lives by himself and every Friday he can afford to come to the mall to get lunch. He comes to be around people. And that is what he got. If that isn’t a call to action I don’t know what is. Q: So what will you be doing with Age Concern? A: The whole idea is about creating advocates to go and have lunch with someone like that old guy, and do that every couple of weeks. To get a base of volunteers and work with the existing people to try and make some people’s lives a little less lonely. It’s exciting. And we are looking for volunteers, so get in touch at ageconnect@ageconcernnt.org.nz

Kate Russell A local charity is hoping to raise some “much needed” funds to help children in need at their annual concert next week. Save the Children are bringing the prizewinning Ferio Saxophone Quartet from London to the All Saints Church on Wednesday, 15 November, at 7:30pm. The show has been made possible by the The Royal Overseas League London, who pays all the expenses to get the quartet to their destination – it is just up to local charities to organise it and find local sponsors to provide the running costs. It is the fifth consecutive year for the popular fundraiser, and concert convenor Frances Taylor says they have now built up a strong support network of attendees. “We usually raise around $5,000 – and that is pure profit to Save the Children.” Money raised this year will go to Fiji to help children and their families replant their

Frances also says they have changed their venue this year, and are moving to All Saints Church on Vanguard St from Old St John’s. “People can expect a very high standard of chamber music and for me, I just want people

to come and enjoy it.” Tickets (including refreshments) are $30 for adults, $5 for students or $60 for families, and are available from the Theatre Royal, i-SITE, Richmond Mall, TicketDirect or Lemon Tree Lane in Stoke. Festival of Running super popular

Simon Bloomberg Five hundred and eighty-five runners and walkers of all speeds and ages converged on Saxton Field Athletics track on Sunday for the Nelson Half Festival of Running. Although Appleby’s Paula Canning and running’s answer to the Energizer battery Phil Costley injected some genuine class into the event, the speedsters were

outnumbered by hundreds of fun runners and walkers. And the festival was a perfect event for all abilities with a run or walk in half marathon, 10km, 5km and 2.5km courses around the cycle trail. The age of competitors was almost as varied as their speed with schoolchildren running or walking alongside veterans like M70plus Tony Cutten who recorded a respectable 2hr 08min 38sec in the half marathon won by Phil in

1hr 13min 45sec. Multisport star Elina Ussher won the women’s half marathon run in 1hr 32min 6sec with Dave Leahy winning the men’s half marathon walk in 2hr 32min 4sec and Terri Grimmett winning the women’s in 2hr 32min 4sec. Paula won the women’s 10km run in 39min 47sec, just 11 seconds behind men’s winner Luke Clatworthy. Paula and Luke entered the stadium together with Luke

producing the stronger sprint down the track to win. Barb Pauling won the 10km walk in 1hr 9min 21sec with Paige Cregeen winning the 5km walk in 34min 34sec and Matt Bowen winning the 5km run in 18min 14sec. The 2.5km walk finish was a family affair with brother and sister Yula and Bertie Van Eck finishing first and second respectively ahead of their grandmother F70

plus walker Flos Van Eck. Flynn Mackie won the 2.5km run. The event’s Give back to Schools initiative, where entrants nominated a school to receive a portion of the entry fee, resulted in over $5000 being raised for schools, kindergartens and playcentres throughout Nelson and Tasman. Richmond School, Waimea College, Henley School and St Joseph’s School proved to be the most popular.

SporTS CLUB CRICKET: Stoke/Nayland has confirmed its favourites tag by comfortably chasing down highly-fancied Waimea Toi Toi United at Lower Ngawhatu on Saturday. Waimea scored 130 off 52.2 overs when they were bowled out. Mason Thelin was the top scorer for WTTU with 41, with Dale Eginton the pick of the bowlers for Stoke/Nayland, finishing with five wickets for just 14 runs. Stoke/Nayland didn't waste too much time chasing it down, reaching the total off just 34.4 overs. It was fitting that the winning runs were hit

by Brendan Hodgson, who top-scored with 41 not out against his former team. In Brightwater, a tight finish saw Nelson College beat Wanderers by just one wicket. Batting first, Wanderers posted a disappointing 140 all out, off just 34.3 overs. The main contribution came from Tom Cross who scored 71 runs off 67 balls. In reply, Nelson College reached the total off 55.4 overs and with just one wicket in hand. At Victory Square, Wakatu beat ACOB. Batting first, Wakatu scored 147 before bowling ACOB out for 126. ers, with many of them earning Super Rugby contracts for 2018. In fact, a record 19 Makos have picked up Super Rugby contracts, which were announced last week. The biggest contingent is at the Crusaders with nine Makos contracted, they are Ethan Blackadder, Andrew Makalio, Tim Perry, Pete Samu, Quinten Strange, Jordan Taufua, David Havili, Mitchell Hunt and Will Jordan. Five Makos have earned contracts at the Highlanders, including Liam Squire, Pari Pari Parkinson, Shannon Frizell, Tyrel Lomax and Alex Ainley. The Chiefs have picked up Kane Hames, Levi Aumua and Alex Nankivell, while the Blues grabbed Issac Salmon and the Hurricanes, Finlay Christie.

Stoke sneak home in thriller

A heavy-weight clash between the region's two top softball teams was marked for its lack of heavy-hitting. Stoke Eagles and Waimea Eagles battled to a 0-0 draw after 7 innings at Saxton Ballpark on Saturday, forcing the game to a tie-breaker. The tie-breaker starts an inning with a runner on second base, Stoke was able to convert the head-start by batting in a run. Waimea couldn't match them and lost the game 1-0. Despite the quality of the game, the two Eagles teams are the only two competing in this year's Nelson premier grade. This weekend both teams will travel to Marlborough to compete with its premier teams in a mixed competition. Derryn French says it's a shame that numbers aren't higher. "But we seem to have these cycles. Our reserve grade and womens competition are ok but, while the quality is good, the numbers aren't so good for the premier mens competition."

Nelson claims Lucas Cup on a countback Nelson has won the Lucas Cup, but it needed a countback to do it. Sunday’s Lucas Cup senior tennis fixture against Marlborough proved to be one of the closest matches yet in the cup’s 68 year history, producing some of the best tennis seen in Nelson for a while. After 16 games of singles, doubles and mixed doubles the scores were tied at 8 matches each, the set scores were also tied at 17 each which meant the cup was decided on which province won the most games – Nelson did, 151 to 141. The fixture delivered outstanding play. Nelson Tennis Club mates David Averill and Paul Muncaster played first men’s doubles against a strong Marlborough combination of Albie Hailes and Hamish Morrow, with the hosts prevailing 6/1, 6/7 6/0. Marlborough pair Kyla and Jade

Otway gave Farrah Richards and Holly Mace a testing first leg in the doubles. The local pair rose to the occasion, giving the Marlborough siblings a run for their money in the first set, the Otway’s powering off with a couple of break of serves to take the second and the win 7/5, 6/3. The pivotal set in the fixture had to be the singles between Nelson’s Taylor Bianco and Dave Sandford of Marlborough. With Marlborough up 4 to 3 in the singles leg, Bianco and Sandford were the last players out on the singles courts. The pair playing a mammoth singles game with accurate baseline shots, consistent cross court placing of the ball and a furious pace, keeping both players constantly on attack and defence. Bianco’s tenacity saw him through, winning the second set tie break and the win 6/4, 7/6, to even the overall singles score.

All Blacks 'excited' about Nelson test Andrew Board

Tasman United defender Daniel Allan scores a header against Southern United at Trafalgar Park on Sunday. Photo: Shuttersport.

What a day for Dan

Andrew Board

You couldn't say Daniel Allan wasn't involved in the game. The big Tasman United central defender gave away a penalty in the opening minutes of his side's ISPS Handa Premiership game against Southern United on Sunday, before scoring a goal himself and ending the game with the goalkeepers gloves. "Yeah, quite a lot happened," he says. So much in fact that it caught

the eye of New Zealand Football, which named him its player of the week. Tasman ended up drawing 2-2 with Southern at Trafalgar Park, but it could have been worse when goalkeeper Corey Wilson was sent off for handling the ball outside of the box. Tasman had already made its three allowed substitutions so Daniel had to slip on the goalkeeper's shirt and gloves. "It's quite nerve wracking back there, but I didn't make any

massive mistakes." In fact, Dan looked to have pulled off a big diving save by tipping a free kick onto the post. Unfortunately a Southern striker was there to bury the rebound, which made the score 2-2. Dan says his experience in goal is limited a few minutes last season as injury cover and a season as a 13 year old. And he'll no doubt be hoping those 15 minutes on Sunday will be the only additions to that experience.

It feels a bit like Christmas at Tasman Rugby Union headquarters at the moment, "just 350 days to go" says CEO Tony Lewis. But it isn't a fat man in red he's hanging out for, its 23 men in black. The world-champion All Blacks will play its first ever test match in Nelson next October and preparations have begun in earnest. On Monday New Zealand Rugby were in town to look over faculties and catch up with staff at Tasman Rugby. NZR head of rugby operations Dan Tatham says the first meeting was about getting into the detail of the event. "We're immensely excited to be here and today is about starting the planning phase." He says the main challenge facing his team is the fact that it's all new. "We haven't been here for a test match before. That's why we want to work really closely with Tony and the crew at Tasman Rugby be-

Round 1 www.nzfootball.co.nz

cause they know this place like the back of their hand. We know how to run test matches, these guys know the venue so that's where we're coming together to run the event." He says the players are excited about playing in the region. "The All Blacks are for the nation so it's good to be able to take games around the country." Tony says he hopes these are the first steps to a long-term relationship. "From our perspective we haven't just put in for one test match and then pull up stumps and bugger off. We want to be here for the long term we want to push this so we can get a regional facility that we're proud of." Nelson Regional Development Agency chief executive Mark Rawson says the game will be a big draw card for visitors, but also locals. "It's absolutely about building an extraordinarily experience not just a game. Both as a visitor experience but more importantly as a locals experience."
