The Fight 4 Victory 3 proved it can pack a punch on Saturday night. A sell out crowd of almost 2000 people packed the Trafalgar Centre for the 11-bout card and well and truly got their money’s worth. Organiser Paul Hampton says the night was likely to raise between $70,000 and $80,000 for Victory Boxing once final calculations were made. Nelson councillor Mike Rutledge won the main event with a split decision victory over personal trainer Matt Ayloff. The opening fight of the night between heavyweights Joni Nacagilevu and Pou Fitisemanu started the night strongly, with Pou outlasting his opponent to set a trend for the night for his red corner team mates. The red team won nine of the 11 fights, largely thanks to superior fitness over the three two-minute rounds. Karly Larking and Julie Taylor entered into an all

“No, to me Christmas is not that important and people just use it as an excuse to get a bit silly around this time of year.”

“It’s faintly on my radar, I’ve started thinking about it but I haven’t done any shopping yet. I am excited for the children and to get the family gathered together though.”

“It’s really not on my radar but I’ve got a wee 16 month daughter and this will be the first Christmas she remembers so I’d like to wish her a Merry Christmas.”

“No, not yet. I know it is coming up but I’m very busy at the moment so I’ll leave the shopping for later.”

Fighter of the night went to John Gallagher, not only did he look like the most technically sound fighter in his win over Harry Morris, he also raised $9000 for Victory Boxing. Paul says he felt a mixture of relief and pride when reflecting on the night. “It’s amazing how the community rallies together for this event. We had people from all over the region helping and supporting us and the response I’ve got in messages has been overwhelmingly positive.” Other winners were Sally Russ over Annie Trathen, Simon Mardon over Craig Morice, Andrew Shaw over Michael Vesty, Kate Donaldson over Amber Rowland-Connor, Jarrod McLaughlan over Corey Boland, Ben Cox over Adam Mokhtar and Nathan Sharp over Heath Botica.

Colombian refugees coming to Tahuna Andrew Board Tahunanui is set for a flash of South American flare when four Colombian families settle in the area next month and the Red Cross is hoping some locals will step forward to help them settle in their new town. It is the first time Red Cross has settled Colombians in Nelson under the refugee quota. Around 15 people, from four families, will arrive at the start of December after a six week orientation at the Mangere Refugee Resettlement Centre. Red Cross community services manager Chris Stuart says Nelson has a “long and proud” history of successful resettlements. “Nelson punches above its weight when it comes to resettlement and we know the town will band together to make these new arrivals feel welcome.” Red Cross is now seeking refugee support volunteers to help make the new Kiwis feel welcome. Volunteers play an essential role in the resettlement process; they are a friendly face and supportive guide for former refugees as they settle into New Zealand. Claire Hughes is a volunteer

She says it’s incredibly rewarding and would encourage others to step forward. “I’m quite new to Nelson, so it’s helped me form strong friendships and feel at home in the community,” she says. “It’s also really nice to know that you’re making a difference to people’s lives and great to learn about different cultures.” She says she helps them set up their house, take them to do their first shopping, help the children get their vaccinations, sort out school stationary and

uniforms, and help in dealing with Work and Income to organise payments. She says the toughest part of the role has been the language barrier. “But you kind of adapt and use lots of hand movements, and Google images has been helpful.” There will be a public talk about Red Cross refugee programmes and how people can get involved on Wednesday, November 16, at 12:30pm at Elma Turner Library. Boxer vows to fight again after Victory Jacob Page Ben Cox stood with a shiner under his left eye, a beer in his hand a winners’ belt around his waist and a desire to fight another nine times. In the moments after Fight 4 Victory 3, the boatbuilder says he’s keen to go from corporate boxing to amateur. “I’d love to get in the ring 10 times before I’m too old. That was number 1.” It had been a long journey to the ring for the 30-yearold who had originally signed up to Victory Boxing to lose weight. “I have ended up losing 16kg but this [event] was something I’ve had on my mind. “When I first started going they were doing the preparation for the second Fight 4 Victory. “I remember telling Paul [Hampton] that I was keen

and if they needed someone to fight or step in at the last minute, I was their man.” Ben’s patience paid off last night with a majority decision win over Adam Mokhtar. Ben finished the stronger in the third and final twominute round, but he wasn’t so sure about the triumph. “I wasn’t overly happy with how I went because I thought Adam did enough, especially early. “I remember it being over and thinking ‘oh, I may have lost that’.” In the end, Ben was one of nine red corner winners on the 11-fight card. “I feel for the blue team, they all worked just as hard as us yet they had a tough night. “For me, I wasn’t as nervous before my fight as I was for my teammates’ fights. “We’ve trained together for 14 weeks and I wanted them to all do well.”

250 year old prayer book back with Every family A 250 year old Book of Prayers that featured in last week’s Nelson Weekly was sold to decendants of its original owners. The book was one of thousands sold at an auction of rare books and samplers which were owned by John and Cynthia Savage. The book had been passed down through the generations of the Every family who relocated to New Zealand from England at the end of the nineteenth century. John Savage bought it at an auction in Nelson in the 1960s and was the first non-Every to own it. Lipscombe’s owner Warwick Savage told the Weekly last week that he would love to see a relative bid on the book. “We were contacted by two members of the family and there was quite steady bidding on it, but they did end up purchasing it.” The book sold for $2350. It was a record auction for Lipscombe’s with over 1000 people viewing the collection during the week, as well as a record number of registered bidders, totalling over 200. Two of the biggest individual sales were an 1843 sampler which went for $2350 and an 1877 book featuring illustrations of New Zealand by C. D. Barraud which went for $1600. Overall 95 per cent of the 604 lots were sold, the remainder of the Savage’s collection will now filter into Lipscombe’s antique auctions.

Nayland Pool opens with a splash Local kids weren’t going to let the cloudy sky stop them from kicking off summer with a splash at Nayland Pool’s open day on Saturday. Nayland Primary student Xanthe Zittersteijn says she has been looking forward to the pool opening, all winter. “We come here heaps and I love jumping off the diving board, so it’s really cool that it’s open again.” And Xanthe wasn’t alone, with well

over 100 people coming through in the morning for what was one of the pool’s biggest ever opening days. After being named CLM’s outdoor pool of the year, facility manager Dave McKenzie says Nayland has undergone a few changes, including a complete repaint, a new slide, new lane ropes and an upgraded water plant. “The customers might not see the new water system but they should feel the

improvement with warmer, cleaner pools which is great.” Dave says getting the pool ready was a lot of work but says it is great to be open. “It’s been a lot of late nights and early mornings but it’s really exciting to be open, I love opening, it means the start of summer is finally here. “It’s great to have so many people here and it’s only going to pick up from here on in.”

nelson L ve Crash on State Highway 6: A lady was taken to hospital “in a lot of pain” after a crash near the intersection of Aniseed Valley Rd and Pugh Rd yesterday morning. Megan Burn was the driver of one of the cars involved and says the crash occurred after vehicles travelling towards Richmond had slowed for a log truck which had pulled out of the intersection and into traffic. “The car in front of me braked quite heavily so I braked a bit harder, but the lady behind me [in a Holden Captiva], didn’t slow down in time. She came straight up behind me, swerved at the last second to avoid me and hit the Higgins truck, but then bounced back and hit my car.”

Based on the monitoring data collected at Groom Road, midway between the reservoir and the city, the Maitai experienced a 2.9%pa improvement trend in the macroinvertebrate community index (MCI). Nelson City Council says the improvement is a result of riparian planting, reduced levels and improved management of exotic forest harvesting, and reservoir management changes. Nelson MP Nick Smith says there is strong population growth in Stoke and the government needs to ensure it matches it with investment in schools. The Stoke School funding will be used to purchase and re-purpose the school’s empty onsite playcentre, converting it into two new entrant classrooms.

Top business award for tax refund company Simon Bloomberg It had already been a great year for Nelson online tax refund business MyTax.co.nz, and it got even better on Friday when it won the Supreme Award at the Nelson Pine Industries Chamber Business Awards at the Rutherford Hotel. MyTax.co.nz was founded by chief executive Lester Binns in 2008 and is now is one of the country's leading online tax refund businesses, employing up to 40 staff. Earlier this year, it won a Canstar Blue Consumer Satisfaction Award and on Friday the judges at Friday's NPI Chamber of Commerce Awards also rated MyTax. co.nz highly, saying it is "a game changer in its sector" and "has exciting potential for global success". MyTax.co.nz general manager Riki-Lee Newport says their staff are delighted with their win, which is a direct result of a lot of "passion and hard work". It is the first time the business entered any awards and the staff are still "really excited and overwhelmed". "Everyone has such a passion for this company and Lester has so much respect for the staff that he makes everyone want to be passionate about it," Riki-Lee says. "We really care about putting in our ab-

Rain doesn’t dampen gala Jessie Johnston The heavens may have opened up on St Joseph’s School Spring Gala but that didn’t stop people turning out to enjoy the spring festivities. “We still think it went extraordinarily well, there were a lot of people who came to support us and we were able to manage the rain by getting everything indoors as much as possible and putting up marquees. We were very, very happy with the turnout considering the downpours,” says gala coordinator, Rachel Swarbrick. The gala featured everyone’s favourite food, activities and stalls, which resulted in a successful fundraiser with the school making well over $30,000. “We’re doing a big grounds redevelopment for our school so all funds raised go back into the project,”

Police officer takes down man with gun

Six lucky local kids have won the chance to become Harbourmaster for the Day after getting out the crayons and winning a Port Nelson colouring competition that was printed in Nelson Weekly last month. Ranging from Ngatimoti to Nelson, each winner received a Survitec Group lifejacket, a personalised harbourmaster cap, an Ecotanker drink bottle and holder, and the chance to head out on the boats with their local harbourmaster for a day. The winners are, from left, Gabriel Kiddle, Sienna Schierny, Eve Rucks, Manaia Karsten and Joshua Duffell with Nelson deputy harbourmaster Josh Hanrahan, left, and Tasman harbourmaster Dan Cairney, right. Photo: Brittany Spencer.

Andrew Board Senior Constable Michael Moorhouse wasn't sure what to expect when he was called to a job in suburban Nelson last November -- but it certainly wasn't to be confronted with a man holding a loaded gun in his direction. Michael was called to the job where he was told a man was suicidal. He forced open the garage door of the house only to find the man had moved behind another door. When he smashed that down, he saw a man standing in front of him with a gun pointed in his direction. "You go to these jobs often but you just have to work through things in your head on the way there. 'What am I going to do if this happens, or if that happens?' I've been a police officer for 19 years so you just rely on your training." For Michael, it meant lunging at the man before he could fire the gun. After tackling the man to the ground and wrestling the gun off him, Michael was then able to take stock. "After he was restrained I looked in the chamber and there was a bullet in there. I thought, 'oh, that could have ended differently'." Michael was awarded the District Commander's Commendation at the Nelson Police Station last Friday for his role in the incident. Area commander Mat Arnold-Kelly says the pay parade, as they're known, is a good opportunity to recognise the efforts of police officers. "It's not an easy job at times, it can be a challenging job with huge demand. There's good and bad, but this is the good." Pegeen O'Rourke-Harris was given the Comissioner's Commendation for her work in family violence. Constables Stephen Berkett and Charlotte Donaldson were awarded the Australia G20 Citation 2014 Clasp. Constables Jamein Bristowe, Jesse Gaskell and Matthew Walker were awarded the New Zealand Police Diploma in Workplace Practice. Senior constables Martin Bagnall, James Green, Graeme Hutching and constable Steven Muirhead were award a 14 year long service and good conduct medal. Sergeant Nigel McMorran was awarded a 21 year long service and good conduct clasp, and retired senior sergeant Eric Davy was given a certificate of service for his 42 years in the police service.

Hospice gets second car donation Simon Bloomberg Five years ago, the Nelson Tasman Hospice Trust received a cheque for $20,256 after a retired Nelson couple and Nelson Rotary got together to run a fundraising raffle with the prize of a beautifully restored 1958 Morris Minor. Peter and Peggy Jack had donated the Morris Minor to the hospice after Peter had spent four painstaking years restoring the classic car to its original condition. And last week, Peggy joined forces with the Rotarians again to hand over a further $15,500 to the hospice after donating a second car for a fundraiser. However, the latest donation was tinged with sadness because Peter had subsequently passed away and it was one of his dying wishes that their car be donated to the hospice. Peggy happily honoured his wish, contacting Rotary’s Chris Page who helped organise the raffle for the Morris Minor, and asking him to sell the car and donate the proceeds to the hospice. “Peter was keen on restoring cars, and when he finished the Morris I said ‘what are we going to do with it’, and he decided to give it to the hospice,” Peggy says. “So I suppose it’s only natural that he wanted to give this car to the hospice as well - that’s the kind of thing he did.” Chris, whose wife Margaret stayed in the hospice before passing away a few years ago, says it’s been a privilege to help the Jacks out with both their donations. He says Nelson Rotary sold 4000 tickets and received donations for the first fund-raiser and enlisted the help of car dealer Paul Kelly to sell the second car. “When we were selling the raffles, we’d tell people it was for a Rotary fund-raiser and they were supportive,” Chris says. “Then we’d tell them the proceeds were going to the hospice and they’d say how many tickets can we buy. “The hospice is such a great cause and the people who work there are amazing. I always say they aren’t staff, they’re angels.” Hospice fundraising and marketing manager Pamela White says the Jack’s latest donation is generous and timely, with the hospice due to start fundraising to develop its new facility in Stoke. “The Jacks have been incredibly generous and Rotary have always been a good supporter of the hospice.”

Nelson cider lovers will be able to sample over 75 varieties of the popular drink at this weekends inaugural New Zealand Cider Festival. Founders Heritage Park is set to host the family-friendly event this Saturday afternoon, which will also include food, music, and kids activities. There will be a range of talks thoughout the afternoon in The Granary from different cider makers, as well as cooking demonstrations using cider and tips on how to make the perfect homemade cider. Musical headliner Greg Johnson will be playing the Village Green Mainstage, and will be joined by local singer songwriter, Tegen Fisher, and Motueka band, Lemongrass. Festival organiser Ali Lawley says that the event has been a long time coming, and she's excited to see it all come together on Saturday. “People have waned to have a festival for many years, but just haven't had the facilities to do it,” she says.

The New Zealand Cider Festival, Saturday 12th November, 12 - 6pm at Founders Heritage Park. Tickets: Presales $25 from www. ticketdirect.co.nz or gate sales are $30. Free Entry for Under 18s.

“She’s never short of company.” Jeanette and her family were so pleased when they discovered Summerset serviced apartments. After looking at options, a serviced apartment meant that Dorrie could continue to live independently, with help at hand. There’s always people close by and Dorrie is enjoying the new friendships she has formed at Summerset.

“I KNOW MUM’S SAFE, COSY AND WELL CARED FOR.”

“Cider is big – the growth market is absolutely huge – it's growing faster than craft beer at the moment.” Ali also says the focus of the festival is very much on “family-friendly” and is encouraging families to come and make a day of it. Ministry of Inspiration, who run science projects for kids, will be there offering activities for young apple lovers - such as apple art, pressing apple juice, creating applepowered clocks and bobbing for apples. For the cider connoisseurs, prices will be standardized across all sellers with drinks ranging from $3 - $7. Also on offer will be craft beer from Founders Brewery, wine from Aronui Wines and non-alcoholic beverages. Streat Kitchen, Founders Cafe and the Cod & Lobster Brasserie will have food available.

“The other residents and staff are wonderful” says Dorrie. Knowing Dorrie is in a safe community environment gives Jeanette great peace of mind.

If you’ve ever dreamed of donning a fireman’s helmet and overalls, now’s your chance to be a real-life fire fighter as Stoke Volunteer Fire Brigade is on the lookout for some new members. With a current force of 22, deputy chief fire officer Dereck Nilsen says the brigade has room for 28 and is ideally looking for four fresh faces. “It’s good fun and if there are people out there who have been thinking about it from childhood they should come down and give it a go, they’d probably be surprised at how much they enjoy it.” The first step is heading along to the station to meet the team and passing a medical test and police screening, as well as

having a clean driver’s licence. Once the application process is complete and the New Zealand Fire Service has accepted the applicant, it’s straight into weekly Tuesday night trainings. Stoke Volunteer Fire Brigade uses scenario-based training to prepare members for the real event, which involves visits to sites they deem high risk, as well as Nelson Fire Station where they make good use of the concrete practice tower. New members also must complete a recruitment course, which includes a small amount of theory in amongst the practical learning. Aaron Ratcliffe first started attending Stoke Volunteer Fire Brigade trainings in April and has just fin-

ished his recruitment course. “I’ve got friends who are in the brigade and they managed to convince me to join, which is a good thing, I should have done it a long time ago,” says Aaron. “I’ve got family members down in Westport who are part of the Westport Fire Brigade and they’ve been long-serving members down there, so it is in my family and I’ve been thinking about it for quite some time.” While new members are still able to attend emergency events and help with tasks such as rolling out the hoses, they are not able to get into the thick of things until they have completed their recruitment course. Already, as a fullyfledged fire fighter, Aaron has

activations in private or commercial premises, to structural and vegetation fires and motor vehicle accidents. While the job comes with many positive aspects such as giving back to the community, those thinking of taking on the volunteer role also have to be prepared for the bad. “You just have to take them as they come,” says Dereck. “We’re like a big family and we’re here to work together, so we look af-

ter each other. If someone’s not coping, we’ll support them.” As well as being physically fit and full of enthusiasm, the station is ideally looking for volunteers who will be able to respond to day time call outs and encourages anyone who has an interest in joining the brigade to come along to their trainings and get a feel for the role. You’ll find the station at 484 Main Road, Stoke or alternately, give them a call on 547 6898.

“The highlight of the year was making our clients smile!” Senior stylist and salon manager to Vivo Hair Salon, Tracey Taylor, points out that it is the happiness on their clients faces as they leave the salon that make doing what they do, worth it. Happy clients start with good hair. What makes for stand out tresses? Pristine skill, technique and a passion for people is no doubt the answer to this question. A widely successful training programme also puts Vivo’s stylists ahead of the game, with seminars and programmes run all year around New Zealand helping mould stylists into masters of their craft. A typical day at Vivo Hair Salon is seeing to it that clients are satisfied with hair they love. The team at Vivo are also big on long lasting relationships, “we have built relationships with our clients, it’s what keeps our line of work interesting and it helps us understand more of what hairstyles will suit you’’. Ultimately a hair makeover is much more than a physical transformation, it can be a major life-changing experience too. “We had a client who had never been shown what in our eyes was such a simple styling technique that completely changed how her hair has been for the last 40 years! Sometimes it is easy to forget that sharing our expertise can change someone’s life! We also had a client that burst into tears and the stylist at the time thought she had done something wrong. It turns out she was crying because she loved how coming to Vivo makes her feel amazing and confident”. The Vivo team consisting of Tracey, Veronique, Mary Ellen, Kim Marie, Kayla & Andorette are excited to meet you with their years of experience in the field. What keeps them passionate about their work is playing to each other strengths and acknowledging where their weaknesses lie. By doing this they are consistently aiming to better their skills while working strongly as a team. This month, Vivo are offering all new clients a welcoming offer. If you love Indian or Malaysian food, then you’ll love Mango and if you haven’t already been you’ll definitely want to visit after renovations to the popular Richmond and Nelson restaurants. The first restaurant opened in Nelson nine years ago and soon two more premises were opened in Richmond and Blenheim to satisfy people’s cravings for fantastic dine-in or takeaway food. With several birthdays under the belt of both the Richmond and Nelson restaurants, owner Pratap Singh decided it was time to breathe some new life into the two premises. The renovations have already been completed in Nelson and finished in Richmond just in time for the grand opening celebration last Sunday. With a fresh coat of paint and new furniture, the two restaurants are also giving their outdoor seating areas an update, offering Mango’s customers a cool place to sit and enjoy their food on the long summer evenings. While they’ll maintain their wellknown logo, Pratap says it too will be freshened-up with some bright new images to bring it in line with their new -look restaurants. Pratap and the team also have some ideas for improving Mango in the future. Their first move has been to introduce a new drinks menu featuring some of the region’s best wine and beer including Stoke, Brightwater Vineyards and Seifried’s. The team will also start preparing for a new lunch and dinner menu which they hope to roll out before Christmas and

To ensure that their outdoor dining areas are well-utilised this summer, Pratap is looking forward to entertaining Mango restaurant-goers with a special Indian style barbeque night, once or twice a week. These new changes must come as welcome news to those who love the taste of Mango and would like to try some new Indian flavours. However, the thing that sets Mango apart from the rest is the variety of dishes that people can experience. As well as serving up excellent curries, naan breads and other Indian delicacies, Mango also offers people a range of Malaysian style dishes. The Nelson and Richmond restaurants are also run by friendly and welcoming staff, making every dining experience at Mango an enjoyable one that keeps

their customers coming back for more. Pratap and the team would like to say a huge thank you to the community for all the support they have given Mango throughout its years in business. To recognise customers’ loyalty and give back to the community, Pratap is bringing a charitable act that started in his Blenheim restaurant three years ago, to Nelson and Richmond. On the birthday of each restaurant, Pratap will take the sales and donate them to the Cancer Society, his Blenheim restaurant donating around $2000 in previous years. Affordable, healthy and delicious, Mango Richmond and Nelson caters to anyone after a quick lunch or a great night out. Raeward sausage earns top marks A Nelson butchery has won a silver medal for its take on a South African favourite. Raeward Fresh won the medal in the Continental Fresh category of the Devro Great New Zealand Sausage Competition for its boerewors. It’s the second time Raeward Fresh in Richmond has won a medal at the awards and owner Justin Blackler says he was thrilled to win again. “We’ve put a lot of effort into our butchery since we took over a few years ago and we’ve built up a reputation for quality meat.” Butchery manager Pierre Marquet

says the boerewors is made with South African spice mix. He says it is popular with local South Africans. “All have their take on it, but all have told us it’s the best they’ve had in New Zealand.” The Richmond sausage was one of 500 entered in the national competition, with all sausages examined, pulled apart and tasted by a panel of 24 judges made up of chefs, food writers and industry heavyweights. The top sausage was a chicken, lime and lemongrass creation made by the Mangawhai Meat Shop, in Northland.

Harpists tuning up for concert Simon Bloomberg A small, dedicated group of musicians are learning the art of playing one of the world's most ancient and romantic musical instruments and they will be showcasing their talents in two concerts later this year. The Harmonie Harp School was formed by Annemieke Harmonie when she moved to Nelson about five years ago. Annemieke learned to play the harp as a nine-year-old in Holland and, after emigrating to New Zealand, decided to set up the school after playing and teaching the harp around the

world. "I learned to play the harp when I was young in Holland and then I travelled around Europe and the world with it in my backpack," Annemieke says. "Whenever I ran out of food or money, I'd get my harp out and busk on the streets." Annemieke says the school has new harpists, including her daughters Aster and Lisa, and "a lot of harpists who have come out of the woodwork" since the school opened. The concert will feature a wide variety of traditional harp musical styles as well as modern

music including Christmas songs. "It's a very ancient instrument, so all the different cultures have evolved their own different styles of harp and harp music over the centuries. It's also one of the hardest instruments to play - it's like learning to play a stand-up piano. The Harmonie Harp Orchestra has already started rehearsing for the concerts which will be held at the Victory Hall in Nelson starting at 3pm on November 26 and the Richmond Town Hall at 3pm on December 4. Entry by gold coin donation.

Quinten Strange, man on the rise Jacob Page Sports Editor

sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Tasman lock Quinten Strange’s stocks continue to rise with the 20-year-old capping off a remarkable year with selection in the Crusaders 2017 Super Rugby squad last week. The 1.99m lock was a standout for Nelson College before earning selection for the New Zealand Under-20s World Cup team this year and becoming a vital part of the Makos team which made it to the final of the Mitre 10 Cup premiership. While game-time might be limited for the Crusaders, Quinten believes he will be in the best place to learn his craft given the franchise has three All Black locks in Sam Whitelock, Luke Romano and Scott Barrett. “My first season will be a chance for me to get around those guys and learn, work hard on my game and work on my size and fitness

in the gym – just become a better all-round player.” Quinten has been mentored by former All Black and Makos lock Chris Jack and believes he and TRU’s Kahu Marfell as major influences in his professional rugby development. Quinten grew up the youngest of three boys in a rugby mad family in Collingwood. He followed his older brothers, Steve, Jay and Kent, into the game with the Collingwood club when he played under-8s on a Friday night. “It was rugby all the time with me and my brothers, on the back lawn, in the hallway, everywhere.” Quinten then played No 8 throughout his teenage years before reverting back to lock. He says the call-up had happened sooner than he’d expected, but he was keen to make the most of the opportunity. “To play for the team I grew up watching (and supporting) is exciting and to be surrounded by

Makos’ teammates will be good.” Quinten says he always admired the style of play of former All Black hard-man Brad Thorn. “Hopefully there’s some of his style in me and more to come,” Quinten says. “I don’t have the height like Brodie Rettalick so I’ll have to be more physical and

Lap record in big night for Brett Nicholls Jody Scott Brett Nicholls 48n continued his early season form at the opening round of the Hanmer Holiday Homes Super Stock Series at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway on Saturday night. Brett, in the No 48n car, picked up the feature win and is leading on points going into round two in Christchurch this weekend. A win and three second placings, including the shootout, saw him off the front

grid in the feature. He got the jump off the start to lead the race, but soon found he had no brakes. The race proved hard work and he was being caught when negotiating lap traffic in the dying stages, but held on to win from Woodford Glen’s Jamie Hamilton, and Alex Bright. Nelson’s national champion Shane Harwood finished fourth, but will sit second on points in the series from Hamilton with Trevor Lineham and Alex.

Brett also broke the lap record, going round in 15.74 seconds. The stock cars saw the return of Adam Hall who will hopefully provide the numbers to get the Thunder team to Christchurch this weekend, Shane Brooks earned his first race win for the season. The Youth Ministocks snuck in four races with the spoils being shared by Hamish Carter and Brayden Nell. Jono Sutton won round one of the Club Production Saloon Championship, with

referees having to officiate on a couple of incidents. Josh Nell warmed to the street stock class, picking up his first race win at home. The meeting finished with the Coca Cola Fireworks display, the packed stadium was in awe as the night sky was lit up and it topped of a fantastic meeting. Racing takes a break for a week after a busy period of racing plus a rain delay, with the Nelson Tigers against Palmerston North Panthers team’s race next up on November 19.

Local axemen compete in international wood chop Jessie Johnston Skilled axemen put in a hard day’s work during the annual International Woodchopping Event at Speight’s Ale House on Sunday. Over 50 people took part in the event, including members of the Nelson Axemen’s Club, axemen from around New Zealand, as well as several from Australia and Canada, many of whom also competed at the Blenheim A&P Show the day before. The Nelson event has been running for around six years and was established in support of the Blenheim A&P Show when the Blenheim club was struggling for numbers. “People don’t travel for a one day meeting like they do for two days,” says New Zealand Axemen's Association president Dave McEwen. “Travel expenses are the same but you’re only getting one day chopping, so we did it really to support them and then, by default just about, it made a circuit out of it for the guys travelling so they do Blenheim, Nelson and then head to Christchurch for the Canterbury A&P Show where over 100 axemen will be competing.” Dave says the reason he loves the

Snapper arrive in numbers Josh Gardiner from Nelson Axemens Club during the Speights Ale House Woodchopping event on Sunday. Photo: Jessie Johnston. sport is because of the camaraderie. “If you play rugby for instance, you might play JAB rugby, you’ll go through the grades until you’re 25 or 30 maybe and then you’re gone. In this sport, you can start as soon as you’re big enough to hold an axe and there’s a guy here today who’s over 70 and still competing. You’re only competing against yourself, it’s you and one piece of wood, the more you put into it the more you’ll get out.” The International Woodchopping Event featured several categories from single and double saw, to underhand, standing, a three-man team event and the International Teams Race which saw the Speights Invitation Team

take on the International Invitation Team. While those from out of town took out most of the top places, local standouts were sixteen-year-old Garin College student Owen Wratt, who placed second in the 250mm open standing event and helped win the three-man team event, alongside Ross Birchfield from Stoke. It was a tight competition in the International Teams Race with Speights leading until the second to last log where the International team overtook, winning the race by two hits. Organisers would like to thank Speight’s Ale House, Mitre 10 Mega and Goldpine, whose sponsorship makes the event possible.

Snapper have arrived in big numbers throughout Tasman Bay over the past couple of weeks. Lots of snapper, ranging from just legal through to almost 90cm in size, have been caught by Dawnbreakers Fishing Club members recently, with Rabbit Island proving to be the go-to place for those extralarge models around 20 pounds. At the recent Dawnbreakers ‘Take-A-Mate Fishing’ Day, the snapper proved elusive for a number of club boats, while others had more success landing some nice reds, gurnard and kahawai. The fish of the day however was definitely the Barracuda, with all boats reporting high numbers of the Cook Strait sailfish cleaning out tackle and lures, and schools of them visible right up on the surface. For those heading out targeting snapper, stray-lining bit baits out the back of the burley trail has been the method producing the big fish, so give it a go.

Nelson Giants announce first import for 2017 NBL season Jacob Page The Nelson Giants’ new import, Joe Slocum, is set to realise a dream of playing professional basketball when he signs on for the 2017 campaign. The 24-year-old point guard will take one of the two import spots in the Giants roster for 2017 after 2015 imports Ray Cowels III and Ben Strong have moved on. Joe, from San Francisco California, played college basketball for the Alaska Nanooks. In the 2015/2016 season, Joe averaged 9.4 points per game and four assists. He only shot 57 per cent from the free throw line during the season in a small sample size. Joe is a friend of former Giants import McKenzie Moore. “McKenzie has told me a lot

Property Management

I am a 54 year old, clean, single person, employed, who needs a rental. Long term be great! I promise to keep it clean, keep it tidy and treat it like my own. I’m also a good neighbour and live very quietly. I do have an old cat who pretty much sleeps non-stop, but I love her. I have great references and have always paid rent on time, so you won’t have any problem with me. I would love a 2 bedroom, maybe 3, in a quiet location around $350 - $380 per week. Need something pretty soon. Please text or call Steve on 0275 449 448 anytime. Thank you.
