Fires and clean air ‘possible’ A flue cap invented by a Nelson man lowers the emissions from wood burning fires and makes them more efficient, international testing has found. For the past four years Nelson City Council has told Neville D’Herville his cowl – which fits on the top of a chimney – wouldn’t be recognised until it is tested in New Zealand. Council staff and even some councillors have also told residents having them installed could be an insurance risk and they need to be taken out. But Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says he is now trying to get it tested outside a lab, potentially paving the way for the flue caps to be installed on Nelson homes. Neville invented a flue cap in 2009 and says it is designed to make fires more efficient. Around 2000 have been sold

throughout New Zealand and a British distributor says he’s sold thousands in the UK without bother and is now introducing them in Europe. But councils in New Zealand want it tested here to make sure it’s safe. Neville is refusing to allow them to do it because the testing is done in labs, without back pressure conditions you’d find in the real world. He says the conditions in the lab are drastically different to what they are on the top of someone’s house and that the lab testing is measured half way up the chimney, not at the top of it where the flue cap is.

A bunch of bare bums will tee off at Greenacres Golf course today, as female members of the club bare it all in the name of charity. The ladies will pose nude for a calendar they’re creating in a bid to fundraise for and put their club on the map – while turning a few heads at the same time. FROM PAGE 1 He says lab testing would probably show no improvement by having the Fluecube installed so refuses to have it tested until it is done outdoors. His UK distributor, Fluecube, has had outdoor testing done, at the University of Colorado and the results were positive. It showed not only does the cap lower smoke coming from the chimney, it makes the fire burn hotter, heating the home quicker and with less wood. Aldo says the results appear to be great news and

he’s keen to have it tested in New Zealand, outside a lab. “Anything that can lower emissions and allow people to use wood burners is something we should look at and if they can do the outdoor testing overseas why not here? I know Neville has brought this to council before but I’m keen to have a closer look at it.” Neville says Nelson City Council and the government have tried to shut him up because the industry around replacing old fires with new is good for the economy. He says his flue cap could be used on old fires and would

make them cleaner burning than new fires. He has produced dozens of letters from satisfied customers who have them on their homes and says his one has been installed for years without trouble. Murray Sinclair of P&M Fireplaces in Tahunanui says he’s used the Fluecube himself and he says it works. “In our experience it makes the fire operate better and after a puff of smoke when you first light it, the fire just returns to clear emissions coming out. It solved our problems on a number of occasions.”

scoop up rewards Nelson butterfly bounty hunters have so far netted 47 great white butterflies, scooping a $10 reward for each dead butterfly. The more numerous small white butterflies are proving easier to track down with 947 of these also handed in to the Department of Conservation in the first week of a two-week school holiday $10 bounty on great white butterflies. DOC Great White Butterfly Project Manager Bruce Vander Lee

said 124 individuals or groups, both adults and children, had last week handed in butterflies. “We are pleased so many in the community have joined in the butterfly hunt and we are grateful for their help. Each great white butterfly caught and killed is helping us in trying to beat a spring butterfly breeding peak. The dead butterflies need to be taken to DOC’s Nelson District Office, Monro Building, 186 Bridge St, Nelson before 11 October.

Miccio has the lead shows mayoral poll A mayoral poll released yesterday shows Aldo Miccio leading the race to the mayoral chains, but with a whopping percentage of people still undecided. The poll was conducted by Christchurch-based Research First and is independent but it was not commissioned by Nelson Weekly. It shows the current mayor on 31 per cent with his closest rival and current councillor Rachel Reese on 24.5 per cent and Brian McGurk on 10.5 per cent. The poll is the first phone poll released ahead of the Nelson City Council elections this Saturday and was conducted by calling 325 Nelson voters on September 25, five days into the voting process. Unsurprisingly, but a potential curve ball heading into the close of voting this Saturday, the survey showed that 34 per cent of people were still undecided. The results have a margin of error of plus or minus 7 per cent at a 95 per cent confidence level, says Research First. Rachel says the number of undecided voters was because the poll was conducted early in the race and she believes those people have made up their minds. “But it will be a very

close election and I urge everyone to make sure they get their voting packs sent in.” The results back up the findings of an unscientific poll on the Weekly website that has Aldo on 41 per cent, ahead of Rachel and Brian McGurk on 29 per cent each, without taking into account undecided voters. The only other candidate, Richard Osmaston, is coming last by a long way in both polls. The results are also in stark contrast to a poll released by the Nelson Mail last week that had Rachel in the lead, with Aldo in second place. Aldo says he is happy with the

latest poll but isn’t complacent and says every vote counts. “I’m happy to be in the lead but I’m not counting my chickens. It will be a very tight race and people need to vote.” Brian McGurk says he’s not surprised that so many people were still undecided as he’s door knocked on thousands of homes and many, even on the weekend, were still unsure of who they were voting for. “But I think people like what I’ve put forward and I’ve got some really positive feedback.” He says it will be interesting to see where the 34 per cent of undecided voters fall on election day.

Olivia Keenan always wanted to enter in the Richmond Mall Model Search, but she just didn’t have the confidence to do so – until this year. And, having been crowned overall winner at Friday’s final, her confidence has rocketed so high she is now hoping her success could be the beginning of a career. “I’ve been told so many times that I’d make a good model so I thought I’ll

try it out and see if I’ll like it,” says the 14 year old Garin College student. “I didn’t expect to win but this will definitely kickstart my modeling career.” Olivia says she was nervous up on the catwalk in front of a large audience but just focused on the task at hand and “smiled”. Event judge Alana Riley described Olivia, who was entered in the intermediate category, as “the girl next

Suburban Club still raising cash Your Community Newspaper

The Suburban Club has not met its fundraising goal but says it is on the right track and the club will be saved from financial trouble. Last month Nelson Weekly reported that the club wrote to each of its 4800 members asking them to pay a $100 donation to help the club pay bills, including to the Inland Revenue Department. The board said at the time that it was confident of paying off the $300,000 it owed by the end of September. But club chairman Ross Strawbridge yesterday told the Weekly around 600 members have paid the donation, a response he labelled “brilliant” but well short of what was hoped for. “We’ve received a substantial amount of donations from members which has been a great response as anticipated, the members are very supportive of the club and we have continued our request into this month.”

Although the debt hasn’t cleared, Ross says the club is working with creditors and they are “happy” with the progress so far. “The creditors are on board, they’re happy that they are getting paid and the IRD’s happy.” Ross says the board became aware of the arrears in August as the debt had not been disclosed in monthly management reports. They say the club is trading profitably after some cost cutting measures. The previous manager is no longer employed by the club and board member Glen Beattie is filling in while the board interviews candidates for the role. “We are in the process of interviewing applicants for the position this week and into next week. We’ve received some really top class applications,” says Ross. He says the club is still encouraging members to pay the donation to help pay the debt.

The ASB building on Trafalgar and Hardy Sts is likely to remain closed for the rest of the year as earthquake strengthening continues. The $500,000 job has already seen steel poles driven 10 metres into the ground and other steel beams added to reinforce existing walls in a major upgrade to make it earthquake safe. Property manager Martin Sutton, of Nelson Management Services, says the building’s 11 owners were keen to make any upgrades as soon as possible but it will be at least another month before work has finished. “One of the owners is a retired structural engineer so he said it’s important that we look at our buildings. A moral obligation as property owners, let’s get these

checked out.” The building is the latest to undergo earthquake strengthening in the city and Martin says there will be plenty more. “What we’re finding now is that tenants are asking what the earthquake status of the building is and if you’re possibly looking at selling the building the first question someone is going to ask is what is the earthquake status,” he says. “You can either wait or be proactive. We recommend owners are proactive.” Martin says the earthquake strengthening will be seen from the street once the safety boards are pulled down. “The big steel beams will be visible from inside and outside the building. People will know it’s safe just by looking at it.”

Haven’t voted? Unfortunately you’re not alone With just days left in the local body elections, returns show that only around 25 per cent of people have voted. The low number is concerning, especially considering the importance to our community those elected to council play. They help shape the way our city will grow and how it will grow. They decide what your rates bill should be and what facilities

get built or upgraded and what doesn’t. All voting packs need to have arrived at the voting centre by lunchtime on Saturday to be counted. Every three years hundreds of voting forms arrive after the deadline, making them invalid. Mayoral candidate Brian McGurk says he is recommending people send their voting forms no later than Wendesday and we

agree. If you’re reading this, fill them out and post them away in the morning. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get your vote away and have your say. Many people haven’t voted because they simply don’t know the candidates well enough. Remember you don’t have to vote for 12 candidates, just as many as you want to.

In the mayoral race we’re lucky to have three strong candidates but they do all stand for different things so make sure you vote for the candidate that will represent your views best. Have your say, vote and vote wisely. Your city depends on it. Editor.

Women’s refuge fundraising tops $18k After seeing how much the almost $19,000 raised last year was needed by the Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge, Car Company owner Shane Drummond decided they simply had to do it again. And not one to do things by halves, his team has come up trumps again, raising a staggering $18,354.30 in just one month. Shane and his team dedicate the month of September to raising money for the refuge by donating a percentage of each car sale to the cause, collecting on the streets and hosting a massive quiz night and auction. Despite miserable weather on one of their collecting days, this year’s total is just a couple of hundred dollars off the massive amount

raised last year. Shane says he is stoked with the result. “To hand over this much money is astounding. To be fair it was a lot of hard work, doing the street appeals, the auction and quiz night and organising it all. We want to thank all the businesses who donated vouchers and products, I did not get one no when I called businesses asking them to donate, that shows how special it was.” Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge manager Trudi Brand says the month means “so much” to the organisation. “The exposure and coverage for us along with the money, is a huge help for us. Richmond Mall celebrated its milestone birthday with a trip down memory lane. First opening its doors in 1973 and revolutionising the way Nelsonians viewed shopping, it has come a long way since the early days says the first mall manager Russell Watson. He was one of thirty people who each share a piece of the mall's history to gather on Saturday for a celebratory cocktail evening, dinner and reminiscing on the way it used to be. “It was great the way it all started. It brought more people to Richmond, just like it does today. It was really revolutionary. We were pioneers to a certain extent,” he says. Thirty one people gathered to celebrate the birthday, including one of the original owners, Pat Clegg, five original tenants and people who worked there from the time it opened. Two people also travelled from Australia for the event, which Russell says was “very special”. “I’m very glad we went ahead with the celebrations. The idea was toyed with for a while, but it is one of those things that if you don’t do you’ll regret after-

Current Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq says the entire event was a huge

success. “It was great to see so many of the original tenants and owners attending. There were many great stories shared, Richmond Mall was one of only two malls in New Zealand in 1973 that traded on Saturdays. Now we trade seven days a week, it is amazing how times have changed.”

Letter from grateful tourist On the December 5 last year there was a car crash on Pelorus Bridge just outside of Nelson. Two men were killed, a French man and a Turkish-German and two women injured. I was in Nelson waiting for the two men for us to go travelling the South Island together. At noon on the 6th I sat in a McDonalds in Nelson and had just finished lunch. Two women came to the table and asked if they could sit down. It was an old lady (around 90 I think) and her granddaughter. My phone rang and it was the manager of my hostel in Wellington where I had lived for four months with the two men. He told me that they were both killed in a car accident the day before. At first I didn’t believe him and then I burst into tears.

The two women in front of me were very concerned and asked me if I was alright. I told them what had happened and the grand daughter was so, so kind and we talked a bit about it. The old lady had trouble hearing what I was saying. But what she did was cry. And when I left shortly after, she took my hand, looked me in the eyes and gave me 50 dollars. I don’t think she understood what had happened but she was deeply touched and just wanted to something for me. It was such a beautiful thing to do, and I really want to tell them thank you and that I’m alright now. Best regards, Lea Thode, Copenhagen, Denmark.

As your councillor, I want to ensure: - Affordable rates. - Transparency of Council activities. - Keep Nelson a vibrant place for local business. - Ensure Nelson is an affordable place to live & bring up a family. - A fresh perspective & 100% commitment to the role. - Ensure Council’s core responsibilities are its priority. - A strong voice for Nelson citizens My burning issue promise: Fireplaces I will strongly advocate for the fair use of enclosed log burners in your home. Burning of dry wood in an efficient operating log burner is a very effective, healthy, and efficient way of heating your home. The legislation brought in 10 years ago is having a growing detrimental effect on Nelsonian’s health and financial wellbeing. Heating and cooking in your own home is a fundamental necessity. I promise to pursue to change this current restrictive legislation during my term if elected as your councillor. For more info visit www.TimSkinner.com

Arts fest ready to kick off Nelson’s largest festival is due to kick off this week with more than 70 events over 18 days. Nelson City Council’s Nelson Arts Festival is a selection of theatre, dance, music and workshops and will launch this Friday with Niu Sila at the Suter and The Phoenix

Foundation playing at Founders Heritage Park. The popular masked parade will be held on Friday, October 18 and festival director Sophie Kelly says the festival is an exciting time for the city and it’s great to have so many kids involved in the festival. “On average we get around 800 – 1200

students attending festival performances each year as part of the Nelson Arts Festival schools programme. Many secondary schools in particular are using this opportunity to integrate show subject matter into their NCSA curriculum. Workshops are offered by visiting artists

and often these will take place in a school with students and will lead into a work that they will later be attending.” This year is the 19th anniversary of the festival, for more information and ticket bookings visit www.nelsonartsfestival. co.nz.

Newbies sign up for community patrol Nelson’s Community Patrol are now out on the streets in force after an artcile in Nelson Weekly attracted 10 new recruits to the organisation. The intake has seen the patrol numbers soar to 40 volunteers and means the group are now operating at “optimum capacity” says coordinator Ange Herbert. “We’ve had an amazing response to our recruitment drive. We’ve attracted the usual people who are retired and want to give something to the community, but we’ve also attracted some younger ones too which is great.” Amongst the new recruits is Barbara Winstone, who says as a retiree with time on her hands she wanted to volunteer her

time but didn’t want to do the usual things, opting for what she descirbes as “something a little more out there”. “The police get a lot of hassles out on the streets so anything we can do to help is a good thing. We are another set of eyes for them.” She says one of the biggest suprises to her about the role is just how much the city transforms on the weekends at night. “It amazed me that at 10pm there was no one in town but at midnight it was seething with people.” Twenty-nine year old Jason Fitzgerald says he joined the patrol after seeing first hand a lot of what went on in town on a Friday and Saturday night. “I was at that age where I was in

Training officer Bernard Redshaw, new recruit Barbara Winstone and coordinator Ange Herbert. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie. there a lot and seeing what was happening, assaults etc. So far I’ve enjoyed it and it’s been good to get out and be in a proactive role.”

A four wheeled recruit is also a welcome addition to the patrol vehicle who have been permanently donated a vehicle by MS Ford. It has been out on

its first runs over the weekend and the feedback has been that its far more comfortable than the previous council supplied car and allows higher visibility.

The annual masked parade is a great family event for Nelson, showcasing the wealth of creativity in the region. While the parade itself has never been a problem for Police, each year we need to ensure that people enjoy the street party afterwards without incident. Months of planning and organisation goes into these two events and in recent years that has ensured they have been trouble free. I hope this year’s event will be too. The organisers have worked closely with Police to mitigate any risks. The main issues from a policing point of view are unsupervised young people and alcohol - and most often it is the combination of the two that creates the real problems and ruins things for others. The entire area of the street party is designated a liquor ban area. Anyone bringing liquor into that area is committing an offence and, if caught, is likely to find themselves cooling their heels in a Police cell. Likewise, people who turn up to the event intoxicated will not be tolerated. They are a risk to themselves and to other people. Parents who are allowing their children to attend this event unsupervised need to make sure they know who their children are with and have plans to pick them up afterwards. It constantly amazes me when I hear from my staff that they have taken youngsters home and their parents have no idea what they have been up to. Police will also be keeping a close eye on the roads in and out of town. Anyone who is stopped anywhere, at any time, can expect to be breath tested! Watch your speed and for goodness sake, don’t drink and drive.

Saxton Stadium up and running again

Saxton Stadium is back open, and just in time for the South Island Masters Games. Tony Naylor of Sport Tasman admits things were “tight”, as the facility opened just one week before the games, but right on the expected deadline. The stadium has been out of action since April’s flood caused significant damage. It resulted in an entirely new 3800 square metre hardwood floor as well as many new wall linings. With the stadium closed, sports codes had to use college gymnasiums and reschedule their annual calendar. Table tennis, volleyball, basketball and netball all had to be played at alternate venues, and Tony says some of the equipment still needed to be returned from the temporary sites. But he was grateful that the stadium could be used for the Masters Games. “Our focus was getting this up and running for the South Island Masters Games. It has been very last minute and very tight but it’s great the 2500 people expected for the masters games can enjoy this facility,” he says. “So easily we could have missed the deadline. It took ten weeks to arrive from Europe for the floor so it was a nervous wait.” The grade quality of the floor has improved but other than that the replacements have been likefor-like right across the stadium.

• Shipping has been constant and keeping the stevedores , pilots, marine staff and port staff very busy over the last few weeks. Recently we saw the return of the 238m container vessel from Maersk line. • The Nelson Sailing Club commenced their season a few weeks ago on a bleak day that saw many out for a “fun” sail. It was great to see the enthusiasm of the young people at the cooler end of the season. • Tasman Bay Cruising club began their spring and summer series with an interesting flag reading challenge. Several flags denoting different letters were scattered around the port confines entrants in their launches or yachts were challenged to find them and make up the correct meaning. A great way to involve the whole family and different members at the start of the season. • It is with some disappointment that the Harbour Master staff reported several instances of inappropriate speed and people not carrying lifejackets on their vessels let alone not wearing them. Life jackets save lives. It is believed that over 30 people would have survived in the last 5 years had they worn life jackets Boat safely this summer,

Duck Soup founder Adrienne Ford will say goodbye to the singles networking group after five years, however the group will take on a new reign as a singles night held at Lone Star. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie. "It's really, 'here is a bunch of people, let’s get together and meet each other'. You can sit and watch what's going on or you can work the room, it's up to you." She says Nelson can be a cliquey town, so Duck Soup was a way to break down barriers and meet people in a different environment. "It's not a dating group where people are looking for a partner. Lots of people are just after new friends and this gives them the opportunity to do that. While she is sad to leave the group behind, Adrienne says the five years she spent introducing Nelsonians to other Nelsonians has been socially very re-

warding for her. "I'm always thrilled to hear the stories from people who have come along and say it has changed their life. They've kick started their social life and that is exactly what I aimed to do from the very beginning." While she admits she is "incredibly sad" to be moving on, she wants people to make the most of the opportunity that Lone Star is now offering. The first singles night for people over thirty at Lone Star will be held on November 3 and on the first Sunday of every month at 7.30pm. The event will still be hosted and $5 drink specials will be available.

Farmer to support ‘home away from home’ A life changing experience has prompted tomato farmer Peter Hanna outside his comfort zone – way outside. Peter has recently returned from three months in Christchurch where he watched his wife Lynda battle leukaemia. It was, without a doubt, the toughest time of their lives but Peter says it was made so much better by an accommodation home for caregivers. He is so grateful that Peter is now leading a fundraising campaign to help it be earthquake strengthened. “I’m a tomato farmer so don’t know much about fundraising, it’s a bit outside my comfort zone but I thought I may as well throw my hat in the ring.” Ranui House is one of the accommodation blocks in Christchurch where the caregivers of sick patients can stay for free while they help their loved ones recover. It’s owned by a trust and was built after a substantial amount of fundraising. Peter is hosting three fundraising events in Nelson in

an effort to raise some money for the house. The first is a concert at Hope Community Church, then a golf tournament and quiz night. He says Ranui House is used by dozens of Nelsonians each year and it does a fantastic job. “It really helped us. I can’t say enough about it or about the facility.” Three months ago Peter had never heard of Ranui House. Then Lynda went to the doctor with bruises and mouth ulcers and within 24 hours was on a plane to Christchurch with suspected leukaemia. He says concern for Lynda, their business and three teenage children was enough to worry about. When they arrived in Christchurch Peter says it was straight to the hospital and getting Lynda sorted in her room and contemplating what they had in store over the next

few months as she fought the disease. For Peter thoughts of where to stay over the next few months as he stood by Lynda’s side was the furthest thing from his mind and he says it stayed that way thanks to Ranui House. “Ranui was just magic. I went there that afternoon and they sorted me out with a room and it was just a few hundred metres from the hospital. It meant we didn’t have to think about accommodation, we could just concentrate on helping Lynda get well.” Lynda says the first round of chemotherapy was “awful” and having Peter so close was a huge help. “It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done and the thought of doing it without Peter was unbearable. He was my rock.” The first fundraiser is a concert at the Hope Community Church is on November 30, featuring George Rutledge and pianist Gabor Tolney. Tickets are available for $20 from the Nelson Weekly office on Selwyn Pl.

You are sooooooooo amazing Julie and definitely helping me!!!! Good on ya chick. You rock big time! Shelley C (via website). It would be wonderful to be able to afford a personal trainer to drop weight. Some of us aren’t that lucky. Stuck in a crappy rut and not knowing how or where to turn next for some extra help. (Via website). Rocks Rd drivers: Why do the majority of drivers in this city leave ‘spaces’ between who they are driving behind, especially around Rocks Rd, therefore causing the traffic to build up to a crawl. This is the traffic going to Tahunanui, the traffic heading for Nelson don’t seem to be as bad. Maybe if the speed limit was raised to say 60k (like it is entering Chch in some areas may help), no doubt 70k would be too high, as there are a lot of drivers not even hitting the 50k limit. Diane King, Tahunanui.

I have developed a very effective voting strategy. I will NOT vote for anyone who pollutes Nelson during the voting season. This includes causing traffic issues with billboards all over the side of the road distracting motorists and ignoring my NO junk mail sign on my mailbox. Josephine McKay.

Glen James’ mayor signs come down: I would prefer to see his signs than all the others! Cheryl Roach.

Good on you Glen, got my vote. Best billboard I’ve seen and puts the rest of them to shame. They are a bloody eyesore. Geoff Win.

Typical, rules for council and local body governments and a different set of rules for business there should be rules on how many election coreflutes are allowed up in one location. Surely they would be breaking transit NZ laws along by the SPCA hideous look! Good on ya Glen for taking the time to advertise your business and have a laugh. Jeff Mahon. All the other bill boards look horrible all clustered together. I think they are a distraction. Who has time to look at them all as you drive past? I love his inventive idea. We can bank on Marty rUgbY: The Crusaders are coming to play a pre-season Super 15 game in Motueka, according to a report in the Press newspaper. The game will be against the Highlanders on February 7 and will be played at Sportspark Motueka. fOOTbAll: Nelson Falcons will host its first trials for the up-coming ASB Youth Premiership season this month. The New Zealand King Salmon Falcons had a strong start to the competition last year and did enough to be asked back by New Zealand Football. The trial dates are October 17 and 24 from 6 to 8pm at Saxton Field. Training for the season starts on Tuesday October 29. Players wanting to trial for the NZKS Nelson Falcons need to have been born on or after January 1, 1994. fOOTbAll: With 13 goals in ten starts, Ben Wright was an obvious choice for Mainland Football Striker of the Year – but considering he’s also the coach, his playing time has become somewhat of a juggling act. Ben, who coached Nelson Suburbs to second in the Robbie’s Premier League alongside Paul Brydon, was unanimously voted the league’s best striker, while Coey Turipa was unanimously voted the league’s best goal keeper. Both players collected their trophies at an awards ceremony in Christchurch.

SHARP SHOOTER: Tasman first five Marty Banks lines up a shot at goal in the Makos big win over Waikato at Trafalgar Park last week. Photo: Phillip Rollo. It’s quite easy to overlook the fact that Marty Banks wasn’t actually selected in the Tasman Makos squad this year – remarkable considering it took just four games in the ITM Cup before the Hurricanes offered him a contract. With Hayden Cripps the incumbent, Tasman selectors opted for first five cover in the form of utility Billy Guyton and the youthful Mike Wells of Motueka instead, when the squad was announced in July. Fast forward three months and the curly haired 24 year old has already clocked up more than 100 points in five appearances, including a record setting 28 points in the round six win over Northland, he’s secured a Super 15 contract in Wellington, the NZ Herald has labelled him a “cult hero”, and more importantly, he’s steering the Makos towards the ITM Cup Championship finals. “It only happened less than a week ago and they called me. It was going to be a wider training squad role but by the Saturday at five o’clock they bumped it up to a full contract and I signed my part on Tuesday, they signed their part on Wednesday. It all happened in about five days,” Marty says, reflecting on his whirlwind week, inking a contract that could see him play in the same backline

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz as All Blacks TJ Perenara, Beauden Barrett, Julian Savea, Conrad Smith and Cory Jane. “Up until Saturday I hadn’t even thought of a Super 15 contract. I was actually looking for work after ITM Cup. That’s how far away playing Super Rugby was from me.” Describing it as “out of the blue” and “a bit of a shock”, Marty will happily put his sales career on hold as he chances his dream of being a professional rugby player in the capital. “It is surreal. I played four games and I got offered it after that. But the way the Makos are going a lot of the boys are being looked at and I was just lucky to be one of them,” he says modestly. But it’s certainly been a year of up and downs. Marty was left reeling in July when his decision to step out of Buller, who he helped win the Heartland Championship’s Lochore Cup, seemed to have backfired, missing out on the Tasman Makos just days before winning the club rugby season with Waimea Old Boys. However, he was eventually given his

chance to prove the selectors wrong when injuries to Hayden Cripps and Robbie Malneek gave Marty the opportunity to come into the Tasman squad and he hasn’t looked back. His reliability, accurate kicking, and monstrous points tally has seen him become one of the competition’s form players and while he openly admits he’s more comfortable at fullback, Marty should wear the number ten jersey come finals time. Tasman has struggled in the first five department ever since the team’s inception. Ben Gollings, Tim Taylor, Miah Nikora, James Marshall, Andrew Goodman, Robbie Malneek, Daniel Hawkins and James Proctor were all tried with varying success – some not up to the grade and others better suited in other positions. But now Tasman seems to have found their man, and surely they will be doing everything they can to keep him here. The timing of asking Marty the final question ‘are you keen to stick around at the Tasman Makos next year?’ seemed perfect as CEO Andrew Flexman walked in the room, and his answer was one everyone in Nelson and Blenheim will be happy about. “I will definitely sign with Tasman, I’m definitely looking to and Andrew knows that.”

Falcons prepare for second season of football After a summer of exceeding expectations, Nelson Falcons head coach Davor Tavich says he’s ready to lift the team to a new level. The New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Falcons reappointed Davor Tavich as head coach for the coming season, with former captain Mark Johnston joining him as assistant coach. NZKS Nelson Falcons will start their second season in January 2014. Falcons committee chair Aldo Miccio says the committee unanimously agreed on Davor Tavich’s re-appointment because they believed he would bring continuity to the franchise. “The team had a fantastic first season under Davor’s leadership, and even though there will be a new squad for 2014, Davor has a great understanding of the ASB Youth League from last season, and has an immense respect from young players from

Masters take over sporting fields

The organisers of the South Island Masters Games have praised the decision to turn Saxton Field into an athlete’s village, believing it has created a certain buzz around the event. The South Island Masters Games, which is being held in Nelson for the second time in three years, began on Saturday with a vast range of sports, combining both social and competitive athletes. Generally the age limit was 35 and over, but in some sports that had been lowered to encourage more entrants. A number of different facilities were hosting events, but the majority were at Saxton Field where the opening ceremony, socials and event bar were situated, making it an “event hub”, says Sport Tasman events manager Rita Merriman. “It has really enhanced these games. We’ve had great feedback so far about how people are liking the one central point,” she says. “They register

here, play here and stay for the socials.” Despite some individual sports having minimal entries, Rita says everything was going smoothly and that the number of competitors was rising each day. Currently there were “upwards of 500” people taking part. “There are always some that have small numbers but going in we know that and they’re fine to run their competitions with less numbers. For us, as long as we can run a viable competition with the numbers we have then we’ll have a good time.” The most popular sports were football and netball, which is partly due to the more social nature of the competitions. While there were obviously some serious athletes, a lot of the teams, particularly in the women’s competitions, dressed up for the event. “I don’t know a single netball team that wasn’t dressed up, which is really cool. The team sports certainly drive the numbers.”

IronMaori is all about family, say organisers A new kind of triathlon event is coming to Nelson where race times are as insignificant as spandex, race bikes and supplements – the IronMaori is all about participation. IronMaori started around five years ago in Napier and now attracts 2000 people each year. Other IronMaori events have also been held around the North Island and even on the Gold Coast of Australia. For the first time it will come to the South Island next year, more specifically, to Nelson. Half a dozen local organisations are pulling together to help run the event in Stoke on Waitangi weekend. Luke Katu, from the Primary Health Organisation, says IronMaori is about supporting Maori to improve their health and wellbeing and to get Maori “off the couches and take hold of their own mana”. “Our eating habits are horrible, so this is also an opportunity to introduce whanau to good, healthy foods that can help them achieve something and hopefully it will become the norm.” He says Maori participation with a lot of sporting events like triathlons is very low

In the Napier event 170kg men have completed the triathlon with their children, some-

thing they’d like to see in Nelson. The event will be held on February 8 and will follow a course from Nayland Pools then to Monaco by bike and a run or walk along the Railway Reserve.

Canoe club hosting beginners’ course

When Oscar Hadley set out to complete the Nelson Canoe Club beginner course two years ago he was nervous and timid. Now he and good friend, Tino Berl, are lapping up the whitewater action this region has in abundance. They have now outgrown their ‘back yard’, the Motueka River and are now paddling Grade 3 runs on the Buller River and elsewhere. Oscar was even awarded the most improved junior at the club’s AGM last month. He says his his love of the river started at one of the club’s annual beginner courses. The course starts at Riverside pool on the evenings of 16 and 17 October and then followed by training on gentle moving water before stepping up to Grade 2+. Nelson Canoe Club is inviting applications to join the course contact: training@nelsonkayakers.co.nz.

Geoff Mullen from Nelson City Council says training schedules have been set up and everyone – including non-Maori – is encouraged to give it a go. He says what makes IronMaori different is that they encourage the whole family to take part. “The difference will be it will be run under a Maori kopapa, which is whauna support and encouraging participation. What you bring with you is your whole whanau, the eating, the diet, the exercise, the whole nine yards. And that’s the core of IronMaori, to bring your whole whanau with you and take them on a bit of a journey.” Pitching together to help run the event is NCC, Primary Health Organisation, Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, NMIT, Sport Tasman, Heart Foundation and Whakatu Marae. Organisers say a minimum of 300 people will take part and they are hoping for 500. “This isn’t an insignificant event. This is a great event for local people to get involved in.” To find out more visit the website of any of the organisations involved, like the Nelson City Council, www.nelsoncitycouncil. co.nz.
