Ranfurly Shield CHallenge Tasman v Wellington
PETER JONES
Could tonight be the night that the Ranfurly Shield finally calls Nelson home?
Marlborough won the “Log o’ Wood” 50 years ago, beating Canterbury at Lancaster Park, but Nelson Bays never won the shield before the two unions were merged in 2006.
Tonight Tasman have a chance
to create history when they take on shield-holders Wellington at the capital’s Cake Tin.
The Mako have climbed two of the highest peaks in New Zealand provincial rugby. On Wednesday they will attempt to knock off the third.
In 2013 the Mako won the NPC championship title, beating Hawke’s Bay in Nelson. Six seasons later they claimed their
first NPC premiership crown, beating Wellington at Trafalgar Park, then repeated the dose the following year with victory over Auckland at Eden Park.
Now they will seek to add what some still view as the greatest prize in New Zealand provincial rugby to their ever-expanding trophy cabinet.
Tasman’s Ranfurly Shield history is remarkably brief. Through
a combination of unlucky draws and untimely results they have had just three attempts in their 17 years of existence to get their hands on the “Log o’ Wood”, which was first played for in 1904.
Tasman’s first shot came in 2008. Two years after Marlborough and Nelson Bays united, they took on Wellington at the Cake Tin, a day after the NZ Rugby
Union handed them a stay of execution following threats to throw them out of top-level provincial rugby.
The resolute Mako responded in appropriate fashion, playing with more cohesion than Wellington for much of the game, but were beaten 26-20.
The challengers led 6-3 at halfSEE PAGE 2

time, with a strong wind at their backs, prompting Lions’ coach Jamie Joseph to ring the changes in a bid to kick-start Wellington’s faltering backline.
Tasman held a 13-11 lead with little more than 10 minutes to play. Then came the match’s pivotal moment, Kahn Fotuali’i was controversially sin-binned and Piri Weepu knocked over the resulting penalty. The hosts then scored two more tries against the depleted Mako to ensure the shield remained in the capital.
After the union’s second challenge, against Taranaki in 2012, the question was asked, “How do you score five tries, 40 points, and still lose a Ranfurly Shield challenge”?
In a thrilling, almost surreal clash at Yarrow Stadium in New Plym-
outh, the home side prevailed 4940 in a 10-try see-sawing epic. The third challenge came in 2021, against a powerful Hawke’s Bay unit in Napier, where the high-flying Mako learned some harsh lessons about the reality of Ranfurly Shield rugby.
Firstly, that mistakes are amplified under Shield pressure, secondly, that defence is a cornerstone of Shield success, and thirdly, that reputations mean nothing when the Log o’ Wood goes on the line.
The final score may have been relatively close, but the fact Hawke’s Bay scored five tries to Tasman’s one in their 34-22 victory pretty much sums up the afternoon.
Plenty of the Tasman players involved in that challenge are back on Wednesday. Sam Matenga, Quinten Strange, Pari Pari Parkinson, Luca Inch, Anton Segner,
Mitch Hunt, Alex Nankivell, Levi Aumua, Timoci Tavatavanawai, Atu Moli, Hugh Renton, Louie Chapman, Macca Springer and Quentin MacDonald are in the current squad. One man who knows all about the pain of a failed Shield tilt is MacDonald. The most-capped Mako has played in all three of the side’s previous challenges.
“Hopefully it is fourth time lucky,” said the durable hooker. “This [challenge] is different to the others because we have such a short turnaround [from Saturday’s hefty loss to Northland] … there is no time to get hyped up, we have just got to quickly get over last night’s game and tuck into it. It is a lot different to what we have done in years gone by
because there is no real build-up. We have one training, then we are off on Tuesday.”
Quentin said they had to go into the game with a positive attitude. “We have to play to win … take it from the start. If we are not there mentally it is going to be a long night. But we are all excited about it, especially since it is an early chance to put the disappointment of Saturday’s result behind us.”
On a personal note, Quentin is keen to tick another box on his long list of achievements, but primarily he is also well aware of what a Shield win would mean for the province.
“I just know what it would mean for the region, what it would mean for the clubs. That means more to me than anything.
“We don’t get too many chances [at the Shield] so it would be awesome to bring it home.”

Council drops proposed motorhome parking ban
MAX FRETHEY Local Democracy Reporter
Motorhomes will continue to be allowed to park long-term on the side of the road after residents spoke against a ban on the practice.
The measure had been proposed as part of Nelson City Council’s new traffic and parking bylaw, approved last week, and would have affected heavy goods vehicles and immobilised vehicles as well as motorhomes which were parked on the side of the road for more than seven days.
Towed vehicles, like trailers and
caravans, are already restricted from parking on the road for more than seven days.
The ban was proposed due to safety concerns for drivers and would have given the council more options to deal with parked motorhomes that posed a risk.
Currently, the council relies on the goodwill of the owner to have the vehicles moved.
“The tools that we have don’t give us a lot of leeway to be able to enforce it,” says Drew Bryant, the council’s team leader transport activity planner.
However, out of the 73 submissions the council received on the
bylaw, 48 specifically addressed the proposed parking ban on motorhomes with 30 submissions opposed, so council staff recommended the measure to be dropped.
Nelson Mayor Nick Smith supported the move, saying that preventing all motorhomes from parking long-term on the side of the road would be like using “a sledgehammer to crack a nut” given the majority of parked motorhomes aren’t a having a major impact on safety. However, councillor Rachel Sanson would have liked to see the proposed ban upheld.
She said that wider vehicles, like motorhomes, can provide additional hazards for cyclists and because the rule would have brought the regulations in line with those of towed vehicles.
The council’s proposal to prohibit parking on the berm – or verge – was modified to prohibit it only in urban areas so the practice could continue in rural areas where there often aren’t appropriate parking facilities.
“No submissions were able to remedy the major issue that we’re trying to address which was damage to roots, damage to footpaths, damage to underlying infrastruc-
ture,” Drew says.
The council also decided to reinforce parking time restrictions by specifying that if you re-enter a carpark less than 30 minutes after leaving, the vehicle will be deemed to have remained in the park.
The new bylaw will come into effect on 3 November.
It will be reviewed in five years’ time.

‘What about the people?’ Airport plan worries Tāhuna camp residents
KATE RUSSELL
Keith and Lyn Swift already have to cover their ears when an airplane flys over their home at the Tāhuna Beach Holiday Park - but soon that home in a “tight-knit” community may not even be there.
Some of the 116 long-term residents at the park may be out of a home if the Nelson Airport’s proposed plan change is approved, including Keith and Lyn, who have lived there for 14 years.
In June, the Nelson City Council accepted a private plan change request from the airport which aims to alter existing designations and zoning in the Nelson Resource Management Plan. The changes would provide the necessary planning approvals to support Nelson Airport’s future operations - including the ability to extend the airport’s main existing runway to the north within the next 10 - 15 years.
“Our runway is among the shortest in the world catering for ATR aircraft and is expected to be too short for future low-emissions aircraft. Expert advisors tell us these aircraft are likely to require longer take-off and landing facilities than we currently provide,” airport chief executive Mark
Thompson said at the time.
“Our vision is to be a world-class airport where zero-emissions aircraft operate. An extended runway is a critical part of our ability to achieve that goal.”
But the holiday park’s chief executive, David Pattinson, says a longer runway and planning for different types of planes means there will be different noise contours with varying restrictions.
For the park, that would mean almost the entire 22ha would be covered by the new Airports Effects Control Overlay, while a portion of the park would also be covered by the new Air Noise Boundary which would effectively prohibit activity in that area. “That will mean about 23 of the 116 permanent residents would have to move. It effectively creates a dead zone where we can’t
do anything.”
David says the increased noise of aircraft flying “lower and closer” will also likely to drive holidaymakers away.
“I’m struggling to see how we can operate under these restrictions.
I feel closure at some point is almost inevitable. The restriction on new builds also means that we will not be able to react to changes in the sector.”
He says while they are “not opposed” to the Nelson Airport expansion, they feel that a southern expansion option has been “dismissed without adequate explanation”.
He would also like to see the airport consider the use of an Engineered Material Arresting System which allows larger planes to use smaller runways.
However, the airport has said that extending to the south would require reclaiming the seabed and would have a range of environmental effects, including on ecological values. Submissions on the plan change closed on 10 July. Acting group manager environmental management at the council, Dennis Bush-King, says they received 469 submissions.
“A hearing date is currently set for December, but this is being reviewed and may now move to early 2024.”
Meanwhile, Keith says the plan has not taken into account the “human impact” and fears the house he built himself will have to go.
“What about the people? This is our village, we know everybody. They pass, and you wave out. If someone can’t start their car, we help. We are a tight-knit unit here.”

Let down by public disabled facilities
MAX FRETHEY Local Democracy Reporter
The disabled facilities across the region are a let-down, says a Belgrove woman who cares for her partially-paralysed husband.
Alan Martin had a stroke eight years ago and now he’s paralysed down the right side of his body, leaving him largely wheelchair bound. His wife Jill now cares for him, but she says the disabled facilities and general accessibility across the region is not adequate.
“You cannot have them home from hospital until an occupational therapist has been to your house and you put in all the rails that are needed, change the furniture, everything, to accommodate their needs,” she explains.
“And then you find everywhere, publicly, lets you down.”
Chairs without armrests to help disabled people lower or lift themselves, spring-loaded doors that close on people being pushed in wheelchairs, disabled car parks that still have a kerb which renders them useless for those in wheelchairs, and too-steep ramps are some major issues for Jill and Alan, however even the disabled toilets aren’t good enough.
Heavy sliding doors, a lack of grab rails on both sides of the toilet – a single grab rail could be useless for Alan if it’s on his paralysed side, toilets that are
too low, and rooms that are too small to allow someone pushing a wheelchair to manoeuvre make every trip to a public disabled toilet an ordeal.
Even the disabled facilities in Nelson Hospital aren’t adequate, according to Jill.
“I want to go around every disabled toilet in every place I’ve been to… and rip every sign off every disabled door because none of them are easily accessible. I haven’t found one yet that is good for getting a wheelchair in and out of,” she says.
“Every human being should have the right to dignity when they go to the toilet.”
She says she has spent years of her life pressing for changes to accessibility guidelines and standards, but has gotten nowhere.
“You just hit your head on brick wall after brick wall after brick wall.”
Both Tasman District councillor Glen Daikee and Nelson City councillor Campbell Rollo, each council’s member on the Accessibility for All forum, see their councils’ roles as one of advocacy but do agree that they could do more to foster accessibility and engage with the disabled community.
“We have got a long way to go,” Campbell says.
“I think the reality is those conversations [about accessibility] haven’t been had enough.” However, he points to the recent development of Nelson City Council’s Annual Plan for
the 2023/24 financial year as an example where members of the disabled community submitted on the plan, drawing the council’s attention to areas it had otherwise missed.
“I’m hoping to see that conversation continue into the Long-Term Plan we have coming up,” he says. “The conversation’s only the beginning of the journey.”
Glen adds that accessibility shortfalls often exist due to a lack of knowledge and encourages people to get in contact with the council, councillors, or the Accessibility for All forum to let them know of any problems.
“We are here to listen to them, please bring them to us. “We don’t know if we don’t know.”
He also says that if enough people weren’t happy with the current facilities, council could have an independent accessibility audit done for the district, a move that Campbell also wants to see happen in Nelson.
But in the meantime, Jill plans to continue striving for better facilities.
“I will keep fighting tooth and nail. Unless somebody keeps speaking up, and creating a nuisance in a way, nothing’s going to change.”

Anjali says northern India has more wheat-based dishes because it is closer to wheat-growing areas, while the south has more rice-based dishes. India is so vast, that the north and south also have different spices and she wants to show this in the dishes. For that reason, the festival has been divided into a lunch of south Indian cuisine and a dinner of north Indian cuisine, with tickets sold for each sitting and an MC running the event. While outside, people can drop in to sample the
range of Indian cuisine from the food stalls.
“They will all be making street food that you generally don’t get here in Nelson.”
An exhibition of Indian culture including saris, embroidery, fabric and paintings will be on display outside the Saxton Oval to provide an insight into Indian culture, though Anjali says the focus will be on food.

Massive mural celebrates te reo and college values
A huge new mural at The Broads playing fields is being described as a celebration of the Māori language and the values, or ngā pou, of Nelson College.
The playing fields are owned by Nelson College and the recently completed mural on a large concrete wall by local artist Nerys Ngaruhe features the school’s colours and the words manaaki (care), pono (integrity) and kairangi (success). The three te reo terms are translations of the school’s original Latin motto ‘Pietas, Probitas, Sapientia’.
“He kaupapa mīharo i whai wāhi atu me te whakahoki kōrero mai i te hapori o Te Wairepo kua ngākaupai ana. Ehara i te toa takitahi engari, nā taku whānau i taunaki mai. Nā taku hoa tāne, ko Rangi, nā taku tama, ko Aneurin me tōku māmā, kua hīkina te mānuka o A.G.E. Ngā mihi maioha ki a Matt Lawrey, ki a Nelmac Kūmānu me te Kāreti o Whakatū hei tautoko mai,” Nerys says.
“It’s been an awesome kaupapa to be involved in and the feedback from Te Wairepo/Victory locals has been so positive. It was a whānau effort to paint this piece with my husband Rangi, our son Aneurin, 6, and my mother Margaret picking up rollers for A.G.E/Active Graffiti Evolvement. Ngā mihi maioha ki a Matt Lawrey, Nelmac Kūmānu and Nelson College for being about the community we call home.”
The project was organised by Nelson College parent Matt Lawrey and supported by Nelmac Kūmānu.
Nelmac Kūmānu chief executive Jane Sheard says they are delighted to support a project that adds so much to the community.
“We love the design and that it promotes really positive values to our tamariki.”
Matt says he always thought the high profile, and often tagged, wall presented a great opportunity for a public artwork. When an Arts Festival project to put a mural on the wall didn’t get off the ground last year, he jumped at the opportunity to make it happen.
“I love what Nerys has done. Not only does it look fantastic, it’s a celebration of te reo and the school’s values, which gives it a lot of meaning and relevance. It also makes me smile every time I go past it. I’m really grateful to the school, Nerys and our backers, Nelmac Kūmānu, for making the project possible,” he says.
Nelson College tumuaki/headmaster Richard Dykes says the college appreciates the support of the local community to brighten up the public space.
“The words manaaki, pono, kairangi are our current focus on positive values and behaviour at the school. It’s great to see them publicised in this way. Many thanks to Nerys, Matt and Jane for their efforts to bring this to fruition,” he says. In addition to the ngā pou, the mural features a tāniko design borrowed from the costumes of the Nelson College and Nelson College for Girls’ kapa haka groups. In a nice touch, the tāniko was designed by Robyn McLaren, who taught at Nelson College for Girls for over 30 years and who is the mother of one of Nelson College’s tumuaki tuarua/deputy principals, Richard McLaren.
“Mum thinks the mural is awesome,” Richard says.

The Theatre Royal Nelson stage will light up with a delightful variety of dance genres, showcasing studios from around the region this weekend.
The show will feature 180 local students, from the tiny pre-schoolers to the senior dancers from Peta Spooner Academy of Dance, Jane Pascoe Movement, Glenna Armstrong School of Tap Dancing and Mickey’s Music Studio.
The performance favourite of ‘Dads in Tutus’ will also make a return.
Rocks Rd is the jewel in Nelson’s crown and needs significant work to be made safe for walkers and cyclists so Nelsonians and our visitors can properly enjoy this section of our beautiful waterfront This project now has certainty
I’ve campaigned and advocated to fix Richmond’s transport mess since becoming Nelson’s MP in 2020, including taking Prime Minister Chris Hipkins through the unsafe and congested intersection at Lower Queen St In my view it is the highest transport priority for Nelson
The previous National Government approved the Berryfields housing development, but without a transport plan to ease congestion in the area, and no plans for safe commuting for walkers, cyclists and mobility scooter users As the local MP, I’ve worked with Tasman District Council, Waka Kotahi and other stakeholders to develop a strong business case for the Hope Bypass, which will improve traffic flow and make the area much safer
These two important projects for Nelson are now officially part of the Government’s Policy Statement on Land Transport, which sets out the Government’s transport priorities for the next three years I’m excited that these projects can now progress with certainty
I’m delighted that the Government has agreed to prioritise two important transport projects for Nelson. 0800
Dancing Through the 50s, 60s and 70s will showcase classical ballet, modern jazz, contemporary dance, songs from well-known musicals and the ever-popular tap dancing. Join The Wakatu Dance Theatre as they perform with music that will transport you back in time.
With a burst of energy, enthusiasm, and a pure love for performance, we are thrilled to bring you Dancing through the 50s, 60s and 70s.
The audience will be treated to the upbeat sounds of Jail House Rock, Good Vibrations and the Time Warp, through to the beautiful classical ballet dancing of Mazurka and Coppelia, along with popular songs of the period such as Dream a Little Dream of Me and Tiny Dancer, all in a fast-paced
“This is a great way to get our fathers, uncles and family members involved in the show. Dads in Tutus has been a tradition since 1987,” says show director Peta Spooner. Dads in Tutus will perform a two-minute-long piece from Swan Lake, which will be choregraphed by Peta. Rumour has it, some of the past performers will be back on stage again this year.
“The Wakatu Dance Theatre is an inclusive, non-competitive environment, all the students who perform on stage are all in the spotlight. It may be the first time or the last time for some, but they will all get the enjoyment of performing on stage,” Peta says.
Students from Peta Spooner Academy of Dance and Jane Pascoe Movement have been out and about over the past few weeks, taking photographs at well-known local landmarks to promote their
show, which has been a huge hit with the locals and visitors to the Nelson region. The two dance companies have worked closely together for years and the dancers who took to the streets for photos said “It was fun to do something a bit different out of the studio”.
Dancing Through the 50s, 60s and 70s will show at the Theatre Royal Nelson on Friday
25 at 7pm and Saturday 26 August, at 1.30pm and 7pm.
Junior Journos is a programme run by the Nelson Weekly which gives young people in the community an opportunity to experience journalism under the guidance of trained staff. Contact sara@topsouthmedia. co.nz if you have a young person who would be interested in taking part.
Late addition to Film Festival
A late addition to the International Film Festival will make four showings at State Cinemas.
“We are delighted that Bread & Roses has been a late addition to the International Film Festival in Nelson and especially excited that Dame Gaylene Preston and Festival Director Sally Woodfeild will be present for a Q&A at the 1.30pm session on 30 August,” State Cinemas director Mark Christensen says.
“The film has special significance for Nelson given that Sonia Davies came to national prominence in the famous protest to save the Nelson rail link at Glenhope in the 1960’s. “From these early beginnings she became one of NZ’s greatest activists championing womens rights and labour causes - but it all started right here in Nelson.”
The restored, full-length film Bread & Roses will screen in 4k at State Cinemas rather than the Suter Theatre.

Harnessing the power of nature's goodness in skincare
Balanced health and well-being is the backbone of our happiness and affects everything that we do, says Three Gems Natural Skincare owner, Louise Routledge. Starting from humble beginnings, Louise first dabbled in creating her own skincare range after an unsuccessful pursuit of an effective antiperspirant that did what it said on the box. Disappointed with what she found, Louise set about making her own product. “I decided to experiment with making my own and I found a simple formula that worked wonders. Delighted, I started experimenting with other plant-based butters and oils to make other natural skincare products.”
Louise first started giving her creations away as gifts, but with phenomenal feedback, demand soon grew and she founded her company, Three Gems, in 2017. Naming the company after her precious three grandchildren, Louise says, “In essence I am simply sharing what I use, and I am delighted to be creating products that are helping people naturally.”
Working towards a cleaner and purer world for future generations is part of what drives her passion for the business.
“It is also the desire to reduce the chance of reactions and irritations that synthetic chemicals can cause sensitive skin and reduce the amount of synthetic chemi-
cals we put in and on our bodies.”
The completely natural skincare products of the Three Gems range contain no synthetic chemicals, no water or fillers, no aluminium, and no parabens. Using only natural and organic plant-based butters and oils such as shea butter and argan oil which are chosen
for their stimulating, nourishing and healing properties.
Louise describes the Three Gems range as suitable for people with all types of skincare needs.
“The range is particularly good for those with sensitive skin as this is why I created the products thirteen years ago - for my own
use. The natural deodorant has consistently been our best-seller because it really works.“
“We offer a moneyback guarantee that the product will keep you dry and odour-free. Having said that, our face oils are fast catching up as a popular item. The Frankincense Face Oil is particularly effect for young (under 40) or acne-prone skin. Our Neroli B Face Oil is proving very effective for mature skin.”
“To show up confident and as our best selves, we need to know that we are feeling and looking good. Our skin is our largest organ, is porous and absorbs everything we put on our skin. I believe what we put on our bodies should be just as considered as what we eat.”
Showcasing her products, Louise will be attending the upcoming Nelson Home & Garden Show on 22 – 24 September at Saxton Stadium and can be found at The Nelson Market every Saturday.
Visit her website at www.threegems.co.nz for more information.

Bus interchange could cost $5m
That’s pretty flash for Nelson, es pecially when there isn’t much else to bring you into town
Joanne Pledger
Well, there goes our rates sky high once again. They really need to think about what needs to be done first & do not let the price go through the roof.
Tania Johnstone
Do the ratepayers get a say in this? Rates have gone up dramatically over the last couple of years. I feel like just not paying.
Jacqui Roche
Argh, I’m so annoyed at this proj ect. That land is prime... Right by the water, open and sunny... It should be cafes with beanbags/an outdoor playground/some nice, shaded areas for people to sit... Etc. Not a bus hub! A bus hub could be put anywhere.

What’s truly admirable about this family is the support they provide to sport across many codes in our community . An incredible achievement to have 3 generations represent Nelson College in the XV and even more exciting to have Oliver named in the Crusaders Junior XV

Of course. User pays again, even though we have already paid... and paid ...and paid. But let’s not hold our breath, pen pushers have no idea. They will come up with another excuse of why not. It’s been a fight of decades. But what would I know. I’m a lowly taxpayer getting stung time and time again.

FINS UP TONIGHT FOR MAKO
History beckons for our Mighty Mako when at 7pm tonight they take on Wellington for the Ranfurly Shield at Sky Stadium.
Nelson has never held the iconic Log o’ Wood. The Shield was donated to the NZ Rugby Football Union by the Governor of New Zealand and Earl of Ranfurly in 1902. The Shield is so old and been handled by so many rugby fans over the decades that it has had to be completely restored, a job just finished last week.
Canterbury and Auckland have both held it 16 times and Wellington, the current holders, 11 times. Our Mako partners in Marlborough, won the Shield 50 years ago in 1973 and successfully defended it six times.
It was an inspired decision to merge the Nelson and Marlborough Rugby Unions in 2006 to form the Tasman Rugby Union and Mako. The early years were tough but the strength of the new union was proven in winning the 2013 ITM Championship Cup and promotion to the top tier of the NPC. They have made the finals four times since, winning titles in 2019 and 2020.
This is our Mako’s fourth crack at claiming the Ranfurly Shield. We were unsuccessful in 2008 against Wellington by 20-26, in 2012 against Taranaki by 40-49 and in 2021 against Hawke’s Bay by 22-34.
Our Mako made a great start to this season, making a feast of Otago 27-15 in their Bunnings Warehouse NPC opener and then beating Auckland 24-12. They took a knock at the weekend, losing 32-5 to Northland. Wellington will be tough opponents. They have won all three starting games this season and won the NPC last year.
We wish Co-Captains Mitch Hunt and Quinten Strange, Coaches Gray Cornelius and Dan Perrin and every member of the squad every success.
Nelson has a proud rugby history, from the day of the very first game in New Zealand played at the Botanical Gardens on 14 May 1870. My hope is that 23 August 2023 will be equally etched in our rugby history as the day our Mako won the Log o’ Wood. Fins Up!

If it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month, or even your year, the Stoke-Tāhunanui Men’s Friendship Club will be there for you.
President Tony Draaijer says the previously named Stoke-Tāhunanui Probus Club is inviting more members to jump on the bandwagon to accommodate its aging membership and develop plans for its 40th birthday celebrations next year.
“We’ve got a lot of members who are over 85 so we’re looking for those younger members, people who have recently retired, to keep the club fresh,” he says.
“We’re going to have a celebration next year and by getting some publicity at this stage we’re hoping that we will be able to in-
crease our membership, which is currently sitting at around the 57 mark.
“If we can increase our membership by 20 per cent that would be pretty rewarding for us.”
Committee member Tom Ricketts says the club, which meets at Reformed Church once a month for its formal meeting but does not discuss religion, and holds monthly committee meetings at different members’ houses, says it offered a slew of social activities.
“There’s a discussion group where they’ll have a topic of interest to hash out… It’s just a bunch of old guys solving the problems of the world, you might call it,” he says.
“There’s a trip coming up over to Collingwood, all over New Zealand we’ve been really [on trips], and at every third [formal meeting] the partners come along,

and we all head out for lunch afterwards.
“There’s also a walking group who do a variety of walks and challenges depending on their age and fitness level.”
Tony says the club is a gateway to uplifting men’s health.
“The members tend to be retired people who have finished being
involved in things like Rotary and are now looking for some sort of fellowship rather than service,” he says.
“There is a need for men just to be with men and it’s the fellowship of doing all those activities, it’s good healthy stuff.

Stoke OnDemand - the bus (almost) to your door
MAX FRETHEY Local Democracy Reporter
As part of the expanded eBus network that launched across Nelson-Tasman on Tuesday, Stoke got its very own service: the OnDemand bus. As part of its prelaunch testing on Friday, Max Frethey had the opportunity to give the service a go.
Just like the name implies, anyone in Stoke can book a ride when needed through the use of the newly-available ‘eBus OnDemand’ app.
The app was straightforward to use. To organise a ride, you simply type in your location and destination (provided it’s somewhere between Saxton Field, Monaco, Marsden Valley, and Beatson Road). To test it out, I thought I’d give myself a break from the laptop screen and used the service to head to the Monaco Reserve so I could enjoy the sunshine.
Once I booked my ride, the app let me know at which virtual stop I should meet the bus. Unlike a taxi, the bus can’t meet you outside your house, but it can get pretty close. There are at least 200 of these virtual stops scattered across Stoke, generally around 100 metres from each other, ensuring you’ll never have far to walk to meet the bus. Conveniently, mine was just across the road. Real-time tracking of the bus in the app, and notifications sent to my phone, told me what time the bus would arrive, when it was approaching my stop, when it arrived, and how long it would wait for me.
So, even though the wait could be up to 40 minutes, plenty of notice meant I wasn’t left in the dark about where the bus was. The app calculates the most optimal way to pick-up and drop people off in such a way that you won’t arrive later than the time you
specified in the app. The bus arrived at a virtual stop just 70 metres from the Reserve. I took the time to check out the other handy features, like the ability to book a ride a week in advance, set a trip on repeat if you know it’s going to be a regular occurrence, and specify when you need to arrive by.
The OnDemand bus runs from 9am to 3pm like the Stoke Loop service it replaced, but it delivers an expanded reach to all of Stoke and can be used to get a ride to the new interchange and link in with the wider bus network. Nelson is not the first place in the country to have on-demand public transport system. It follows similar services offered in Auckland, Hawkes Bay, Timaru, and Wellington. There’s potential for the OnDemand model to also be rolled out in Atawhai, Nelson South, or Richmond if the service proves popular in Stoke and
there’s sufficient demand. The service costs just $2, before concessions, and with free transfers within an hour could then be used to travel anywhere else in the Richmond-Nelson urban area for no additional charge. If I didn’t have the app, I could’ve called council’s customer service

Celebrating a decade of colourful excellence: Nelson Bays Decorating
This year marks the 10-year anniversary of Nelson Bays Decorating. Finally, after much ribbing from friends, family and clients, Steve is updating his photo in his classified advertisement.
“We have advertised in the Nelson Weekly, with great success,
since we started our business in 2013. The photo from way back then has never been updated. I thought after 10 years it was high time this was done.”
A family man, Steve has seen it all and has the grey hair, receding hairline and scraggy beard to
prove it. Evolving with the times, it is not just the business that is showing its age, he says. “I have had so many people have a good laugh about my business photo that was taken in 2013, and the transformation to now. On top of that every week when the Nelson Weekly comes into our house my daughter Olive cuts out my picture in the classifieds and throws it in the fire!”
Juggling a business with a busy family life has not dulled his sense of humour with Steve saying his wife and children have been the main culprits of his ageing process.
“Having two boys and an eight year old daughter has contributed to my look. They definitely keep me on my toes, especially Olive, the
youngest! My wife Kirsten has been a huge support from the beginning and is still actively involved in the business. She is the brains of the whole operation, apparently.”
Established in 2013 from humble beginnings, as the classic ‘one man and a van’, the award-winning business started out mainly repainting already established homes and renovations. This has shifted over the last few years to include the ever-growing new home market, but Steve says the team are still available to take on any kind of project. “We love transforming old and tired homes with a shiny new paint job. Those are the best jobs. When there is a major change, that is so apparent.”

Shane Cameron trials new course at local gym
JACK MALCOLM
New Zealand boxing legend Shane Cameron was in town last weekend, testing out his newest course alongside Victory Boxing. Having run his Counter Punch as the country’s only accredited level one course, Shane came to Nelson to trial his new level two course.
After coming up with the new course over lockdown, he says the weekend was a pilot to iron out the wrinkles and gauge interest in a more advanced level of boxing instruction.
“I drew this up in lockdown. If there’s demand for level two, I’m
ready to go; it’s all in my head.
“I’ve had 20-plus years of fighting and working with world-class coaches and fighters, and I want to give back.”
He says the level one course gives the basics on eight different punches and the defensive foundations, but level two focuses more on slipping and rolling punches to pivot and counter.
“I don’t coach how I used to fight because not everyone fights the same way.
“The first thing you learn is footwork. The foundation is built from there, and if you have a shaky foundation, nothing is going to be able to be added on top.”
The decision to use Victory Boxing as the trial gym for his new course was an easy one, says Shane, because of their prior working relationship.
“Paul (Hampton) has a great organisation here. He’s all about upskilling his coaches, and his coaches can pass on the knowledge of level two on to the young kids coming in here.
“It’s a privilege to share my knowledge. I don’t know everything, but I have a bit of knowledge.”
Shane professionally fought 34 times between 2002 and 2014, notching up a 29W/5L record with 22 knockouts on his way to
numerous title belts which saw him inducted into the Gladrap Boxing Hall of Fame in 2019. Before starting his professional career, he won bronze in the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games as an amateur.
Paul says there’s been a real buzz at the gym, with dozens of boxers coming through to train under Shane throughout the weekend.
“We’ve had about five years of the level one Counter Punch and put through about 100 people.
“There’s a real buzz for our guys to be trained by Shane. We have a great relationship with Shane. We go up there quite a bit, to his gym in Auckland’s North Shore.”
After a Friday night session for the fight team, Saturday saw Shane take the gym’s volunteers and coaches for a session before an open training on Sunday. With the gym funding Saturday’s training for their volunteers and coaches, Paul says it was also about giving back for the tireless hours they put in to keep the gym running on all cylinders.
“It’s a real privilege that he’s using Victory Boxing to improve his courses. There’s more than 20 people (here), but we could have had 40. They’re always looking to grow and learn and to be trained by one of the best boxers New Zealand’s ever had.”
Local basketball model has national shot
GORDON PREECE
The 2023 Fulton Hogan Basketball League concluded on Sunday and the scenes could soon be bounced to other New Zealand courts.
Matt Vernick, who has recently been appointed the inclusion lead at Basketball New Zealand, says the current model, which has slam dunked in Nelson for 18 years, demonstrates the “best delivery model” for the community.
“When you look at the success of [the model], you’ve got 150 people playing basketball on the regular in a town of Nelson
which has about 50,000 people, it shows what’s capable in a bigger population centre,” he says.
“It’s an inclusive basketball league where the people who play in this league have the same opportunities as any other person does in basketball, so they do a weekly training and then they get to play in a competition every week, and that’s what we want for everyone in New Zealand. The benefits are a real sense of belonging, so you feel like you’re part of the whole basketball community People walk in and see the Nelson Basketball signs, they see the uniforms, they see the referees,
they see the scorebench, it’s like any other basketball game.”
Matt says the model, which is a collaboration between Nelson Basketball Association, Nelson Giants, Fulton Hogan, the Inclusive Sports Trust and other local sponsors, could be introduced to other New Zealand basketball associations as early as next year.
“We’ve spent the last six months consulting with the community and getting their feedback and input, so what I’ve put together so far is a reflection of what the community wants to see, and the feedback I’m getting is very positive,” he says.

From Suburbs to Samoa for football coach Skippy
JACK MALCOLM
Local coach Ryan ‘Skippy’ Stewart says it’s an honour to be called up to head the U23 Samoan team as part of their Olympic qualifying bid.
The Suburbs men’s team coach had already been asked earlier in the year to lead the country’s U17 team to a tournament in Tahiti, but had to decline due to prior commitments.
This time around, he says it was too good of an opportunity to pass up, even if it does slightly clash with his planned holiday back to the UK. With three weeks together as a squad, having a week and a half to train as a full team before their first game against Tonga, he’s excited to see everyone come together from all corners of the globe to compete for their country.
“It’s a young side, 80 per cent are 20 years old and younger, so it’s a youthful team.”
With the Oceania confederation under Fifa having just
one spot in the Paris 2024 Olympics for the region, the team will have to finish in the top two of their pool with Tonga, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands to advance to the semi-final.
With Australia joining the Asian confederation in 2006, Ryan says the real challenge will be if anyone can topple the
New Zealand team.
The two power-house countries have won the tournament every edition since its inception in 1988, with four-apiece, except for 2015 when it was won by Fiji after they beat Vanuatu in penalties.
“Can anyone turn over New Zealand, the top team,” says Ryan.
“But, anything’s possible in football. That’s why it’s a great game.”
Ryan says he applied for the job earlier this year after being encouraged by his “good friend”
Paul Ifill, who now coaches the Samoan women’s team.
He and Paul have had a longterm working relationship together, spanning the era of Tasman United (2016-18) and the creation of the local Ifill Academy.
Having been released from his commitments with Nelson Suburbs to lead the Samoan team, Ryan was thankful for the club’s support as his employer.
Without their backing, he says his dreams of coaching international football would have not been possible.
“It’s fantastic to say I’ve been part of international football. It’s something as a coach you always want to do.
“It was always a dream and to do it so young is special,” he says.
Mako women
The Mako women will play host to Taranaki as the Farrah Palmer Cup reaches the knockout stages. Sunday’s game at Trafalgar Park, at 11.35am, is before the Mako play North Harbour to round off their storm week in what is hoped to be their first Ranfurly defence at 2.05pm.
Hockey The finals will be decided this week after poor weather stopped play midway through the P1 men’s and women’s final over the weekend. Both games will resume with two periods to play, with the men’s Tasman White team looking to mount a comeback from a 1-0 deficit to Waimai United when they resume play on Wednesday at 6.30pm, while Waimai United’s women’s team will be looking to hold onto their 2-0 lead over Stoke at 6.30pm on Friday.
Netball Prices Waimea Ahurei have a big job ahead of them as they look to come back from their loss to Jacks OPD in last week’s NBS premier grade netball major semi-final. The team will now have to win twice if they want to retain their hold of the title, with a preliminary final against Richmond F45 on Thursday at 6.15pm to decide who will play in Saturday’s big game.
Women’s rugby Stoke-Nayland have clinched the U18 Nelson-Tasman title for the second year running with a 31-15 win over Queen Charlotte College at Lansdowne Park on Saturday afternoon.

For the first time in a decade, inline hockey teams from the Wellington Capital Penguins travelled to Nelson to take on the Whalers, as the local rink hosted a Conference League which doubled as qualifying for senior nationals. With the Christchurch Lions also in town and junior grades in action, over 150 players were in attendance, including the first-ever Whaler’s Junior Women’s team making their playing debut and the captain of the senior team, Lewis Dawson (pictured). In the senior A division, it was local domination as the Whalers opened with a 6-4 win over the Penguins, before beating Christchurch 7-1 and finished with an 8-4 win over the Penguins, while the senior B team also swept their four games to go unbeaten. RUGBY TIPPING
The roar of rally returns
JACK MALCOLM
Rally racing makes its return to Nelson this weekend as over 50 cars are set to take on the forest roads surrounding Nelson Car Club’s dirt track at Kohatu Park.
And expected to be at the front of the pack is former Nelson local Ben Hunt, driving his factory-built Skoda R2.
Now living and competing out of Pukekohe, Ben is returning to Nelson this weekend as a multiple New Zealand national rally champion and says he always looks forward to his hometown event.
“We just love supporting club rallies, especially Nelson. I think we have done every one the club has held since 2009.”
Some other local drivers to watch out for include Māpua’s Neville Kidd in his bright orange Honda-powered Ford Escort and Greg Teece in his motorcycle-engined Toyota Starlet, while Marlborough’s Richard Bateman will be looking for a good result in his Mitsubishi Lancer.
Taking advantage of having the rally service crews and spectators at the track all day, the club has also organised a demonstration autocross to be run throughout the day for the club’s youth competitors.
They have also invited some spectacular, more experienced cars and drivers, including consistently the club’s most successful autocross driver and current president Carey Harwood in his Subaru Impreza.
While the club’s youngest drivers are putting on a show, some of the country’s most experienced drivers will be battling it out on the stages.
Palmerston Norths’ Brian Green, New Zealand’s most experienced rally driver still actively competing, having raced in rallying since the early 1970s both here and overseas, will be competing in a classic Ford Escort Mk2. Forestry regulations do not allow for spectators to access the stages so viewers are encouraged to get themselves to the club’s track and service area to get amongst the rally cars and drivers.
Event organiser Brian Kirkwood says that extreme care will be needed while using the access road for Kohatu Park, with the potential of oncoming rally traffic on the narrow gravel road. Directions for reaching the track can be found on the club’s website, nelsoncarclub. co.nz

Son of Jess and Les and brother to Jennifer and Gail, treasured nephew of Elsa, brother in law to Vicki and Ross. Special uncle to all his nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all for his compassion, wisdom, story telling and big heart. Special thanks to Steve Delany, Oncology staff and the amazing Nelson Tasman Hospice Team and volunteers. Donations to the Nelson Tasman Hospice would be appreciated, and can be made on-line. The family are so grateful for the support and help of so many close friends, new and old, you know who you are.
