Cutting wood for the community KATE RUSSELL For the last six years, Glenn Roberts has been helping Victory residents stoke their fires with free firewood. Once a week on a random day, he, along with Roxy the dog, picks up discarded wooden pallets from various businesses, chops them up, and puts them in a skip behind the Victory shops for people to help them-

selves to. The idea was sparked when Glenn owned Nelson Heating and Cooling and ended up with “stacks” of wooden pallets every week. Every year, it is estimated that 150 million pallets end up in landfills. But, 99.9 per cent of wooden pallets in New Zealand have no chemical treatment present, so they are perfect for burning. “We used to get all our heat pumps

on wooden pallets, so I used to take them home and cut them up for our fire,” Glenn says. When he got out of the heat pump business, he thought he’d keep doing it - but for the community instead. “I enjoy doing it, it’s therapeutic cutting wood, and I just had this idea of doing it as a hobby.” He approached the Koha Shed at the Victory Community Centre to see if

they could house a donated skip that he could fill up with the pallet wood once a week. And, it was an immediate hit, helping many to keep their homes warm and offset winter heating costs. When the Koha Shed closed its doors earlier this year, Glenn found a new spot for the skip - just around the corner, behind the Victory Discounter Dairy. Continued Page 6.

‘Disappointing’ decision to retire double decker KATE RUSSELL AND SARA HOLLYMAN Hannah Sangster can’t remember a summer when her two children haven’t enjoyed an outing on the Tāhuna Summer Beach Bus. But this year, they won’t get to have that experience. Nelson City Council announced last week that the iconic double-decker service is retiring after

six years of operation now that the new eBus is up and running. This, however, has caused a public outcry, and Hannah has created a petition to save the service. “This is a tradition we have always done with our family. For the council to remove it cold turkey is not a good decision. It’s a bit rough,” she says. “People ride the bus for the journey and experience of being on

a double-decker, and it’s also a great tourist attraction.” The Summer Beach Bus service operated on a loop between Nelson City and Tāhuna Beach Holiday Park via Tāhunanui Beach with six return trips a day. However, the council has decided to no longer support it due to the increased frequency of trips available via the eBus service, as well as council seeking ways

to cut costs and the emissions produced by the diesel-powered double-decker bus. Acting Nelson Mayor Rohan O’Neill-Stevens says the decision to end the grant to Tāhuna Holiday Park to run the summer beach bus was an operational decision, made by council’s senior leadership team, meaning elected members had no say in the matter. He says it was made

in alignment with council’s stated cost pressures and recognising the “significant improvements” to public transport under the eBus. “With the wide breadth of council’s work, a range of decisions are delegated to the chief executive as part of his operating mandate. Of course, when issues of likely significance to the community arise,

‘Disappointing’ decision to retire double decker FROM PAGE 1 elected members are given a heads-up, as happened in this case. We acknowledge the Beach Bus was a summer favourite for many. These difficult decisions are a reflection of significant cost pressures impacting local government across the country, and ones our staff do not take lightly.” A statement from the council says the introduction of the eBus service in August provides 94 trips per day between Nelson and Tāhunanui from 7am to 7pm - an increase of 58 trips compared with the former NBus Route 2 service. The adult Summer Beach Bus fare was $4 cash while the eBus cash fare is $3 or $2 with a Bee Card. The eBus service also connects passengers with the full network. “Passengers on the Summer

The Tāhuna Summer Beach Bus has been officially retired from the loop service. Photo: Supplied. Beach Bus would have needed to travel to the CBD to connect to other parts of the region via bus,” Rohan says. “With the eBus service, from the interchange on Muritai St passengers can travel to The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary, Nelson Airport, Founders Park, Richmond or onto Motue-

ka or Wakefield. “With more bus stops, routes and frequency servicing Tāhunanui than ever before, it was felt that the $16,000 required to operate the Summer Beach Bus was a saving that could be made without overly impacting local businesses and the community,”

Rohan adds. However, Hannah isn’t the only one who is unhappy about the decision. As of Tuesday morning, the petition had gained 523 signatures, with many commenting how important the service is to Nelson. Many called the decision “disappointing” and a “backward step”. “This bus is iconic to Nelson! The kids love it and so do tourists. It had never been promoted properly, no timetables available and never any media coverage. It needs to be promoted not banished,” said one person. “Nelson needs tourist activities that are a little bit different... Would you rather ride on a double-decker bus in summer or a ‘normal’ bus?” said another. To sign the petition, go to www. change.org/p/save-the-doubledecker-summer-bus

Acting mayor: Incoming govt shouldn’t just ‘wind back the clock’ MAX FRETHEY

Local Democracy Reporter

Nelson’s acting mayor is hoping that the incoming government won’t just “wind back the clock six years” and delay action on critical issues facing councils around the country. With a National-led government now all-but-certain to take the reins from Labour following the election, uncertainty hangs over councils as the former government’s major reforms in water and resource management sit on the chopping block. “Across local government, the conversations are really a ‘wait and see’ and maybe try to anticipate,” says Nelson’s acting mayor Rohan O’Neill-Stevens. “We don’t know clearly what’s going to happen for a lot of these things, but what we do know is that the underlying issues are still there.” They say there are a range of options available as the incoming coalition government figures out its priorities and policy directions other than “throwing the baby out with the bathwater”, so that areas of political difference can be

adjusted in a way that keeps change moving forward. “I would be frustrated if the answer is to wind back the clock six years… We’re very willing to work with the government to get good outcomes for this region.” Rohan acknowledges that which policies may be delivered are largely subject to coalition negotiations, but they say there are new opportunities on the horizon such as National’s City and Regional Deals plan that would see local and central government create long-term pipelines of region-

al projects. “That is already being discussed, and work is going on, and actually an area where I think we as a region are really well-positioned to be a first cab off the rank for that kind of longer-term investment.” Rohan says that the local government sector is facing a funding crisis and the prospect of reduced funds from central government over the next term – all three likely coalition partners have committed to limiting spending – will be difficult for councils. “Local government has pushed

really strongly for greater investment from central government and a greater share of tax revenue down into our regions so that we can minimise the burden of significant rates increases,” they say. “We’re going to have to work really hard to navigate what is going to be an incredibly tough challenge.” Nelson’s Labour MP Rachel Boyack has appeared to narrowly retain her seat after the special votes have been counted, and though she will no lon-

Motorbikes, scooters, mopeds and a whole lot of goodwill will be on show for the annual Toy Run next weekend. Now in its 38th year, the event is organised by the Nelson branch of the Ulysses Club and will be happening on Saturday, 18 November, rain or shine. Riders will collect new toys and donations for the Salvation Army on their journey from Richmond to Nelson, which go to help those in need at Christmas. Co-ordinator Lorraine Lindsay says they have reversed the route this year, as usually they travel in the other direction, from Nelson to Richmond. This year it will start at the Richmond Showgrounds, travel down Queen St, Salisbury Rd, through Stoke, down Waimea Rd and Rutherford St, finishing at Trafalgar Park where there will be a sausage sizzle and a raffle. “We want more people to come to the endpoint at Trafalgar Park. They can bring along toys to donate and see the bikes.”

Lorraine says they are asking for no soft toys this year and encourages donations such as books, games, jigsaw puzzles, art supplies, or things for school. “People can give money as well, the Salvation Army will have collection buckets.” Lorraine, who is 75, says she has seen a few Toy Runs in her day. “Hell yeah. I have been involved for 33 years. I used to have four bikes but now just have my three-wheel Spyder. I’ve had a hip reconstruction and I’ve got a new knee.” Lorraine says she is hoping to get more than 100 bikes involved this year. “We’re open to all makes of bikes … mopeds, classics, scooters. Everyone will be put in sections with the same type of bike. “People can decorate their bikes and it would be nice if they dressed up as well if they can. There will be prizes. We’ve had elves and fairies in the past.” Participants are being asked to meet at the Richmond Showgrounds at 10am. The ride will depart at 11am and is predicted to get to Trafalgar Park at around 11.45am.

Capabilities not disabilities for 16-year-old SARA HOLLYMAN For Briana Stewart, forming and maintaining friendships has been a life-long struggle. So when her mum Mandy reached out on social media for help to make Briana’s 16th birthday special, Victory Boxing answered the call. Briana has attended Victory Boxing for around six years and has become a solid part of the Victory whānau.

Briana now helps with coaching the primary and intermediate classes, after having outgrown the classes herself. On Thursday, when Briana thought she was turning up for her regular training with the kids, what she actually walked into was a suprise birthday party. “It was a collective response to mum asking for something for her daughter to celebrate who she is as a person and really make her feel like she really does belong

somewhere,” says trainer Shaz Nicholls. “And Victory Boxing is the place where she belongs.” Being a person who loves sports, her party was attended by Tasman Mako players and Nelson Giants head coach Mike Fitchett, who presented her with a shirt and singlet from their respective teams. “I was really shocked, I was not expecting this,” Briana said humbly of the celebration. She says she is a regular attendee

at Giants’ games and is looking forward to donning her singlet at the next game. She says what she loves about Victory Boxing is that it uplifts her. “I just love it.” “She always says this whole group is like her family,” Mandy says. “Because they’re absolutely amazing with her. She’s got a lot more confidence since joining, she’s amazing, she’s just the most amazing girl.” Shaz says Briana’s making an im-

pact on the girl’s group just by being herself. “With her confidence and just showing her own capabilities and how she has stepped up to train the girls. She’s breaking down barriers and opinions and all amazing things. “There’s no such thing as disabilities in her world, it’s capabilities,” Shaz says. Mandy says the surprise meant “absolutely everything in the world” to her daughter.

More than 3000 people attended Nelson’s Diwali Festival celebrations at Founders Heritage Park on Sunday. The traditional Indian festival symbolises the spiritual victory of light over darkness and the Indian New Year. Organiser Anjali Puri says the event featured traditional floor artworks called rangoli, traditional Indian delicacies and cultural performances. She says it was important that a local Diwali celebration was held for the growing local Indian community. “We need to celebrate our festivals and especially when the community is growing, we have over 700 people in the region,” she says. Cutting wood for community FROM PAGE 1 Glenn says the pallets come from “all over the place” and there certainly isn’t a lack of them. He gets them from various businesses, including his own business, Glenn Roberts Electrical. He also picks a few up from Manuka Street Hospital. “They have lovely ones too, the Rolls Royce of pallets with the nice big block corners on them.” Glenn says he can fit up to 12 pallets in his bright yellow Holden SS ute. Once he’s collected a load of them, he heads up to The Brook where he’s set up next to the community garden to chop the wood into pieces. Once this is done, he loads all the wood back into his ute, and off to the skip it goes. He says the wood always gets snapped up very quickly, especially in the winter. “You put it in, and it’s gone the next day. I don’t even know who comes and gets it. I hope it’s for single mums and refugees who don’t know where to get it from. It’s expensive. “But now and then I hear of someone who got some wood and how much they’ve appreciated it. The odd person has come over and given me $20 for petrol.” Glenn says it’s important for him to give back to the community - and it’s in his blood, with his parents being very civic-minded, too. “I’ve enjoyed cutting the pallets up and burning them, and I’m sure everyone else will enjoy them too.”

Trimming off from fields of gold GORDON PREECE Mark McNabb has been outstanding in his field, lawn mowing, mulching and weeding Nelson’s parks and reserves since 1976. The 64-year-old Nelmac employee will put the final touches to his career and retire on 24 November after more than four decades keeping green spaces pristine. Mark says he grew an interest in land care as a mini mower but didn’t expect it to be his life’s work. “When the opportunity came, I took it quick, I first started with a walk behind mower, I did a lot of the edging work round the reserves and parks where the big tractors couldn’t get close,” he says. “I did that for eight years and then the boss said, ‘I wouldn’t mind having you on the tractor and doing some mowing, would you like to do that’, and I said, ‘I would like to have a change from walking behind a mower’. “Most of the time you’re working by yourself, so in the wintertime you enjoyed having a break from mowing because you get on with the other guys and you end up planting trees and mulching round trees, I’ve probably mulched half of Nelson two

or three times.” Mark says technology growth had provided a cut above, but it wasn’t always clean-cut. “Later on [Nelmac] got sit-on mowers which are a lot easier and give a real cut, the [walk behind mower] was about a 20ft cut with one big blade, and the trouble was it made a neat job of cutting but if it hit a stone, it would knock them 100 yards quite easily,” he says. “I probably put the odd dent in a car, but you didn’t always know you’d done that until [drivers] said ‘hey, you’ve put a dent in my car’.” Mark says gazing across his freshly-cut grass gave him an edge. “I had one guy when I was mowing at Fairfield Park who

reckoned I was a professional because he said, ‘you keep this park like a bowling green’,” he says. “When I first started, I was working near a reserve and this old lady came to me and said, ‘my husband’s too crook and he can’t mow the lawns anymore, would you like to mow our lawns, and I said ok then’. I ended up doing that for 18 years.” Mark says he planned to spend his retirement restoring stationary engines and continue his long service at Nelson Vintage Engine and Machinery Club. “I’ll also probably check up on the lawns to see that they mow them as good as I have after I’ve left,” he laughs. Nelmac’s mowing team lead-

er, Murray Thorn, says Mark has been an “extremely loyal employee” and that he would be “sorely missed.” “It is a true testament and a tribute to Mark that he has put so much effort into keeping the sports fields looking great and more importantly, playable for all users to enjoy,” he says. “When talking to Mark, you could feel the pride he had in maintaining the sports fields, while keeping his John Deere tractor looking sharp, performing all the maintenance checks that ensured the mower was always ready for work. “Go well Mark, enjoy the well-deserved break, Nelmac has been a better place having you as part of the team.” Mark McNabb will switch off his mowing career after nearly 48 years on 24 November. November is here and we are bursting at the seams with gorgeous stock. Everywhere you look there are treasures to be found. Now is the perfect time to plant all summer crops with abandon. Tomatoes need to be in the ground by the end of this month. This gives them plenty of time to ripen their gorgeous crops. Chilli, capsicum and eggplant love warmer temperatures and will establish quickly outdoors. Alstroemeria are wonderful perennials and have a long vase life. We have a lovely range of Inticancha varieties from Evandale Nurseries in Southland. They are beautiful, chunky plants and are gorgeous colours. Choose from deep purple, white, indigo, orange tones and more. Heights range from 40cm to 90cm. Alstroemeria love full sun and deep, welldrained soil. Before planting mix fish compost thoroughly through the soil. Once planted, water well and scatter sheep manure pellets around the plant. When picking for the vase or dead-heading, it is important to pull the entire stalk out of the ground. This encourages new growth and more flowers. Grafted Avocado trees are in-store now. We have Hass, Reed, Fuerte and Bacon varieties available. They need a warm, sheltered frostfree position and light, well-drained soil. If

you have clay soil and are longing to grow one, dig a very wide, deep hole and put lots of stones at the bottom to aid drainage. To help ensure good crops in years to come, it is best to plant a Type A and B variety. The flowers on each open at different times of the day which increases pollination. Hass and Reed are Type A. Fuerte and Bacon are Type B. After planting give them at least fifty litres of water gradually. Continue to do this every two to three weeks throughout their first summer. This helps ensure they will develop strong deep roots. Drip irrigation will encourage surface roots which is not ideal in the long term. We have a specific Avocado fertiliser that can be applied after they have been in the ground for one year. Mulch thickly, making sure the mulch does not touch the main trunk. Wool mulch is a perfect option. It maintains moisture very well and keeps the soil cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Pea, barley and red clover straw are also good. Our new site is such a joy. We love that we are your one stop shop for everything gardening and landscaping supplies. Thank you for all your lovely feedback, it means a lot. Business Update. Adv.

DOLLY PARTON ROCKSTAR:

THE GLOBAL FIRST LISTEN EVENT TICKETS ON SALE NOW

Danisa Bull, Niko Bender and Jess Prendergast have opened a “much-needed” coffee shop in Victory. Photo: Kate Russell.

Victory gets caffeinated KATE RUSSELL “Finally” has been the reaction from Victory residents to a coffee shop opening in their suburb. Ace of Cups on Toi Toi St is the brainchild of Niko Bender, who owns Artistic Creations Tattoo Studio. Until recently, the studio was located at the site, but Niko has moved it around the corner to a bigger space on St Vincent St. He decided to keep the lease on the old site and open a “much-needed” coffee shop, which officially began caffeinating locals on 23 October. Niko says he has spent eight years watching Victory grow and believes the dynamic of the suburb has changed. While there are two dairies and two fish and chip shops,

there is nowhere for locals to get a good cup of coffee. “I saw a gap … when I was tattooing here, I’d always hear people at the laundromat next door asking where the nearest coffee place is,” he says. Jess Prendergast, who is currently managing the shop, says they have had an overwhelmingly positive response to their injection into the community. Danisa Bull, who is also involved in both ventures, agrees. “The amount of times that we hear, ‘Thank God, finally’,” she says. The inked theme has flowed over into the coffee shop with decor ranging from tattoo-inspired posters to spider-webbed style chairs, which were modified by Niko. “Everything in the shop is recycled - bought off [Facebook]

Marketplace or from ReStore,” says Jess. “Niko made the counter out of a set of drawers. eBus to stay off Jenner Rd KATE RUSSELL The eBus will not be returning to Jenner Rd after investigations have found the narrow road to be “unfit” for longterm bus usage, but a new route to service the area is set to be announced soon. In September, Nelson City Council noticed and started

receiving comments that Jenner Rd was being damaged in some places following the newly-implemented eBus Route 3. “Contractors undertook spot repairs to ensure the road could continue to be used by both the eBus and residents of Jenner Rd, but results of detailed investigation showed

that the road was unfit for long-term bus usage,” says the council’s group manager infrastructure, Alec Louverdis. “We have subsequently decided that the new bus will be permanently rerouted from Jenner Rd.” Alec says a new route to service the area will be announced in the coming weeks.

Kākāriki karaka in running for ‘Bird of the Century’ The kākāriki karaka is a hot contender for Forest and Bird’s Bird of The Century competition as its numbers thrive in The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary. The kākāriki karaka is New Zealand’s rarest parakeet and is only found within the South Island. Until recently, the kākāriki karaka’s suitable habitat was limited to only a few offshore

islands due to the impact of introduced predators and habitat destruction. Today, they are confined to four beech forest valleys. Alongside Te Rūnanga o Ngai Tahu, the Department of Conservation, and Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust, the sanctuary has been working hard to establish a thriving population of kākāriki karaka in Nelson with the support of

Te Tau Ihu iwi for the past two years. The kākāriki was first released into the sanctuary in November 2021 and 125 captive-raised birds have been released there to date. According to a recent survey, around 170 kākāriki were recorded. You can vote at www.birdoftheyear.org.nz until 12 November.

Teachers, parents, management and a few ‘old-timers’ are hitting the stage to raise money for the Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association. The first production since the shows were halted in 2020 due to Covid, show organizer and senior education advisor Nelson Tasman Kindergartens, Margie Meleisea, says that they are aiming to raise $35k this year. The opening performance of the Wild West cabaret-style show graced Broadgreen Intermediate stage on Saturday, with two more shows this Friday and Saturday. Margie says attendees can expect a lot of innuendos, funny costumes, and a whole range of lip synced songs performed by the cast of 32. Tickets can be found at Trybooking.com. Photo: Sara Hollyman.

Men’s Day to fulfill healthy masculinity GORDON PREECE A free, one-day event for Nelson Tasman men to express their emotions and bring their health into the spotlight will be held on 18 November. Coordinator Hardy Bachert says the international men’s day event will feature workshops hosted by men’s groups from Nelson, Richmond and Motueka to provide a light-hearted space to promote positive men’s health. “There is a perception that men don’t talk… the old morals are about sucking it up, and staunch it out, you’ll get through it, and we’re trying to promote it, own your stuff, and reach out,” he says. “We create an environment where guys can explore their situation, own their problems, and work on the root causes of why things might not be working so well. “We’ll have buskers, chill out areas and dance workshops… and the other side of it is we’re going to have workshops and

there might be a bit of a preconceived idea that we’re all tree huggers,” he says. “But what happened was that every single workshop was absolutely to capacity, and every workshop tried to go over time, so we had a massive engagement.” The event will be held at Victory Community Centre between 12pm and 6pm on 18 November.

Ban fireworks

Last night (Saturday) we were subjected to the most appalling display of inconsiderate, arrogant and selfish behaviour. From about 10pm until 1.30 am, a series of very loud fireworks were set off near our house. These bangs were in groups of five or six. Sleep was impossible. There was no point in ringing the police or noise control as the fireworks were set off randomly throughout this mutton-headed incident. And of course, these people will have a stockpile to last ‘til Christmas. I hope it rains tonight! Ban fireworks? Yes, and the sooner the better. Howard (last name witheld)

MARATHON GOAL ACHIEVED Completing the New York City Marathon on Sunday with Nelson teammates Lester Binns, Andrew Board and Kim Ngawhika was a relief and the accomplishment of a long-held personal goal. The inspiration for this mad mission came about last year when I told Nelson running legend Rod Dixon that I was travelling to the USA for the school reunion from my time as an AFS exchange student 40 years ago. It was the same year Rod won the New York City Marathon. He noted he had an allocation of entries in recognition of his stunning win and challenged me to have a go. Rod has spent the years following his marathon win promoting children’s fitness through Rod Dixon’s KiDSMARATHON. This programme involves children running a mile a day, achieving the 26.2 miles (42.2km) over a school term. It has been completed by 1.3 million kids, mainly in the USA. We stitched together the idea of a Nelson team running this iconic marathon as a fundraiser for the cause. We are grateful for the sponsorship of Matthews Eyecare, Gibbons, Smith Cranes, Good Storage, TSM and the many smaller donations. I am no athlete but like to participate in all sports. I did the Coast to Coast, kayaked the Cook Strait and completed a couple of half marathons in my 30s. The problem is I am 25 years older. The training has been good for body and soul. It had the bonus of getting me more familiar with our city’s wonderful network of pathways and tracks. I also take pride that Nelson has been rated as the most active region in NZ and I feel a duty as Mayor to promote exercise. I want to thank my teammates and the coaching support of both Rod Dixon and former Boston Marathon winner Lorraine Moller. We are also grateful for the coordinating support of Sport Tasman, which we are working with to implement Rod’s running programme in local schools. Our goal is to have 1000 Nelson and Tasman children complete Rod Dixon’s KiDSMARATHON programme over the next few years. We welcome further donations via our Givealittle page. Our aim is a new generation of active Nelsonians. We may even inspire a future running legend.

Nelson Motorhome & Caravan Show

Sat 10am-4pm / Sun 10am-3pm

Holiday Park set to buzz with Nelson Motorhome and Caravan Show rolling into town A popular event that attracts over 2000 people each year, the annual Nelson Motorhome and Caravan Show is revving up for this weekend after a two-year hiatus. Held at the Tāhuna Beach Holiday Park over two days, November 11 and 12, organisers say this year is set to be a cracker with a phenomenal range of exhibitors and fantastic prizes to be won. If exploring our beautiful country is high on the bucket list, then there is no better time than now to check out what is currently available at the show. Top-quality, new and used motorhomes, caravans, campers and accessories will be on display along with incredible prize packs valued at over $4500. The first prize has been kindly donated by Heslop Group in the form of a $3000 travel voucher. Second prize includes an All

Points Camping Club one-year subscription and a $200 fuel voucher, a Bluebridge return sailing voucher for a motorhome and family, and a Pure Milford family cruise pass, while third prize consists of a Moutere Caravans goodie basket valued at $500. Along with the phenomenal range of prizes to be won there will be demonstrations and displays by the exhibitors, including the brand-new prototype FENZ caravan and a Vintage Fire Engine. A family-friendly 'Hospitality-food Zone' will be set up offering a varied selection of food and drinks to purchase, along with a sponsored gazebo sunshade and some seating. Kevin Gear is the site manager for the event and says having the event at a location such as Tahunanui Beach Holiday Park is fan-

tastic. “What a location! It is an amazing venue and enables us to put on a great event which the public can come along to and immerse themselves in what the exhibitors have to showcase.” One of this year's many sponsors, Mike Carmody from locally owned SOTA RV, says it is great to see a resurgence in people purchasing caravans and motorhomes to explore New Zealand's beautiful countryside, “Over the last 12 months the caravan market has been a steady ride, although highinterest rates coupled with it being election year was always going to make 2023 a bumpy one, however, the orders of new caravans have still been consistent throughout the year. We are finding people have done their homework on what they want to buy and are generally coming to SOTA RV to

Nelson Motorhome & Caravan Show build the caravan to suit their lifestyle, however adventurous that may be.” Debbie Armatage, the Marketing, Communications and Events Manager for Tāhuna Holiday Park, says, “We love hosting this show and are so delighted it’s back. We love meeting the exhibitors and attendees that share our passion for this style of holiday. In the accommodation sector, Holiday Parks came out of Covid wearing the least impact, mainly due to people rediscovering the beauty of New Zealand when they couldn‘t travel further afield, at an affordable price. We’re happy to note this trend has continued post-Covid, as camping-style touring and holidaying continues to increase.” “We’re one of the largest Holiday Parks in New Zealand at 22 acres, located beach-side, with a serious variety of fun activities both onsite and within walking distance. Combined with the fabulous Nelson climate and scenery, this is simple beachside relaxation at its best.” Having previously been managed

for over a decade by the Nelson Rotary Club, past President of the Richmond Rotary Club, Diana Wilkins, says she is excited to bring her extensive knowledge in the industry to this year's event. “Jan Heslop has successfully managed the show for years but has now retired and approached our club to take it on. I have been involved in the Exhibition/Trade and Events industry in Sydney, Australia, since 1987 as Director of Impact Displays and Events Australia. After returning to my homeland of NZ, I discovered Richmond Rotary and have been a member since 2017. I have enjoyed getting my teeth back into organising events as 'once an exhibitionist, always an exhibitionist!' Making contact with the lovely folk in the motorhome and caravan industry has been a pleasure, as they are a down-to-earth, professional and friendly group of people.” Along with an existing group of regular loyal exhibitors, Diana says they also have a number of exciting new exhibitors who will

Prize Giving

2023

As a College we’ve come together again to celebrate successes in so many different areas. We started the year honouring 71 students with academic colours and as the year progressed celebrated many more achievements. Our football, basketball, volleyball, mountainbiking and underwater hockey teams all competed at their respective national tournaments. Our chess players and debaters featured well at regional competitions. Our art, photography and wood technology students put on a stunning exhibition held at NMIT Through these awards, we honour the exceptional young men of Nelson College. Our Senior Prizegiving is not just a moment to acknowledge academic success, but also to applaud the attributes that define a good leader - resilience, integrity, compassion, and determination. Our boys have not only ex-

celled academically but have demonstrated their commitment to these values. The Head Boy, a role that embodies leadership and responsibility, has been shouldered with grace and dedication, not only representing our school with pride but also setting an example for others to follow. Congratulations to Oliver Morton who takes over from Matt Donald. Our Dux, the embodiment of academic excellence, has shown an unwavering commitment to the pursuit of knowledge. We celebrate his achievements as a testament to the dedication and hard work that can propel one to the highest peaks of success. Welcome to Nick Peterson who succeeds Sam Twamley. To all our young men, we are incredibly proud of your achievements. You have embraced the challenges and opportunities that have come your way, and you have

emerged as outstanding individuals. Your journey doesn’t end here; it’s the beginning of a new chapter, and we wish you the very best in all your future endeavours. Your school, families, and community believe in your potential, and we are confident that you will continue to embody the values manaaki, pono and kairangi as you venture into the wider world. The impact of our boys leading change in how we treat and act with each other has resulted in an increased number of students enrolling for 2024. In taking up, and ensuring that ngā pou me a mātou kawa is becoming an intrinsic part of what we do, our students are creating an environment that others want to be a part of. To those returning, our challenge is to continue to embed these things into everything we do. Ki a koutou ngā rangatira āpopo. You are the leaders of tomorrow.

As we bid a fond farewell to the year 13 class of 2023, many of whom have been an integral part of Nelson College for Girls, Te Kura Tamawāhine o Whakatū, for five years, we celebrate the unique threads each student has interwoven into the rich tapestry of our college. We are incredibly proud of these remarkable young students. Our school’s fabric bears witness to 140 years of history and tradition, and with each unique contribution from our students, a fresh perspective enriches this heritage. In partnership with our dedicated staff, this diversity ensures our Kura remains at the forefront of modern educational and cultural concepts, embracing the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Throughout 2023, our Kura and ākonga have been privileged to be guided by Acting Principal Heather McEwen. Her strong leadership has brought a sense of calm and stability to our school, fostering an

tradition of the student-led wharf jump. The prize-giving was a joyous occasion attended by year 13 students, staff, and whanau. We were honoured to have Geena Horne as our guest speaker, who

joined us in celebrating our students’ achievements and the numerous opportunities they have had. The feedback we received from the event was overwhelmingly

positive. One parent expressed heartfelt gratitude for the Senior Prize-giving and Leavers Ceremony, acknowledging the dedication and hard work that went into its organization. The sense of community and support was evident throughout the ceremony. As these young women embark on new adventures, they carry with them the invaluable lessons and cherished memories from their time at NCG. The support and dedication of our staff will forever be a source of inspiration as they take their next steps. The impact of their presence and achievements will be unforgettable in our school’s history. As we look ahead, Nelson College for Girls is excited to welcome both current and new ākonga for the upcoming academic year of 2024. Together, we will continue to weave the diverse threads of our school’s legacy, embracing change and celebrating the ongoing achievements of our students.

Farewell to our 2023 Year 13 students, we wish you all the best.

We look forward to our 2024 year starting back on Thursday 1st of February www.ncg.school.nz

Take care with potting mix and compost Follow these simple tips to keep yourself safe from Legionnaires’ Disease Spring and daylight saving brings many Kiwis out into the garden. Unfortunately it's also the time when gardeners are most at risk of catching Legionnaires’ disease from bags or bulk loads of potting mix and compost. Bagged potting mix and compost can contain Legionella bacteria, which when breathed in, can cause Legionnaires’ disease. This disease is a type of pneumonia, which can be severe and in some cases life threatening. Here are a few simple precautions to reduce your risk when handling compost and potting mix: • Always work outside, a fine day with light wind is best • Wear a well-fitting N95 or respirator face mask • Wear gloves • Open bags with scissors and away from your face • Wet the mix to reduce dust • Wash your hands with soap and water when finished More information is available here: www.healthify.nz/health-a-z/l/legionellosis/

NEW LOCATION 14 Gloucester Street, Nelson 03 548 3473 – www.mastervaletnelson.co.nz

Local business celebrates Grand Opening of new state of the art facility From humble beginnings, Master Valet Drycleaners and Apparelmaster have been on an exciting journey of growth and expansion since 2014. Owned by Bev and Darryl Hamilton for nearly a decade, the recent move to their brand-new location on Gloucester St in Nelson marks a significant milestone in their success story. Celebrating in style, the team hosted their grand opening with friends, family, clients, suppliers and the people who helped to make the move possible on Friday, November 3. The move has been nearly a year in the making, and attendees were invited to walk through the new space before speeches and the cutting of ribbons. Their journey began back in October

2014 when Darryl and Bev acquired Master Valet Dry Cleaners and Laundry. After looking for a change in lifestyle the business opportunity was initially spotted by Darryl, and the couple quickly saw the potential in the already well-established company. “As most Nelsonian’s will know, Master Valet is an iconic business, that has been at the Collingwood Street site for nearly 60 years,” says Bev. “We have had many customers come in and tell us they used to work in the business as school kids, doing the deliveries after school. The delivery bike is now down at Founders Park.” “The business really needed a makeover. Firstly, we rebranded and painted the building bright purple

to go with the new brand. The big bright M became very recognisable on our building but also our vans. Darryl worked hard to upgrade the washers and dryers, but also to make the place more pleasant for customers and staff. Darryl has amazing vision and this made it more efficient, creating an office, moving railings, reorganising the laundry equipment layout and eventually adding 40ft containers to the driveway to cope with the growth. It was apparent we were outgrowing the site so needed to make the decision if we were going to continue to grow. As Darryl says, ‘we were trying to force a golf ball through a garden hose, with the amount of business we were doing on that site’.”

Master Valet Drycleaners and Apparelmaster owners Bev and Darryl Hamilton celebrated the grand opening of their new facility on Gloucester Street with family and friends on Nov 2.

Fast forward to November 2022 and Bev and Darryl embarked on their most significant venture yet: the move to a custom-fitted, spacious building on Gloucester St. This move was a culmination of ten months of meticulous planning and hard work. Darryl took on the role of project manager, working closely with skilled contractors to revamp the building's facade, install essential lines for steam, water, and air, and fit out the space with state-of-the-art machines and equipment. The grand opening at Gloucester Street was emceed by Bev’s brother, Roger who spoke of the couples generous and gracious attitude, and genuine caring for their staff and the community as a whole, a fact which he believes is the reason why the business is so successful. Ever humble in their achievements, both Darryl and Bev attributed their success to the dedication of the other. “Bev put all of this together and kept the wheels turning,” says Darryl. “Everyone who was involved in the transformation of the facility,

the remedial work, refurbishing the front facade, installing the boiler then many metres of steam pipes, plumbing and electrical, everyone was really invested in the job and just got it sorted. They have all been phenomenal and made it easy to get things done.” Bev says their staff have also been awesome and helped the whole transition come to pass. “Particular thanks has to go to Kylie, our Operations Manager. Managing the existing business while machines were being transferred across town was not always easy and she ensured the team adapted to get the job done. We cannot thank them enough and are very fortunate to have such a great crew onboard.” The result is nothing short of spectacular. The new location showcases the commitment to offering top-quality laundry services. The move was a massive undertaking, but the team's dedication ensured a seamless transition. They closed their Collingwood Street location on a Saturday and were up and running in their new Gloucester

St facility by the following Monday. It was a whirlwind, but it marked the beginning of a new

chapter for Master Valet and Apparelmaster. “Nearly one year ago we secured

this building. I had grand visions of using project management software, listing out what needed to be done, timelines, and costings. Darryl had other ideas and had it all planned out in his head. What he has achieved is just incredible. To all of our customers who have been behind us every step of the way and helped us to grow, thank you. To our team especially Kylie, Raeleen our Senior Drycleaner, and Tiff our Retail Manager, we thank you for the support and hard work to get us here.” “We have been able to physically separate the two parts to our business, so the retail drycleaning and laundry now have a dedicated area with their own machines and plenty of space to work on customer’s garments and furnishings. From Tiff welcoming our customers and discussing their requirements, to Raeleen and her team actually drycleaning or laundering the items, we take the utmost care. We look after men’s dress shirts, and suits, dresses and evening wear. Wed-

ding dresses are a specialty, and we are so proud as they are returned to the customer. From duvets and toppers, we clean sleeping bags, blankets and curtains. It is so much easier now with room to move!” One of the remarkable aspects of their venture was the open and supportive nature of the Apparelmaster team around the country. Unlike many industries where information is closely guarded, Apparelmaster was refreshingly transparent and offered invaluable support. The duo were able to tap into this network of expertise, further fuelling their ambitions. So, what is Apparelmaster? “We provide overalls, workwear and food industry garments on a rental basis so customers don’t have the capital outlay and can focus on their own business. We supply fit-for-purpose garments and will pick up and deliver clean garments each week as required. We also rent mats, towels and first aid cabinets. Your complete laundry solution.” The Owner and Managing Director of Apparelmaster NZ, Bevan

The new facility on Gloucester Street, Nelson, has been fitted out with state-of-the-art machinery and equipment to provide topquality laundry services to the region. Ritchie, attended the event and says the company is beyond proud of what Bev and Darryl have achieved. “These guys are just superstars. Year after year they achieve the biggest growth percentages, by far in our group, we couldn’t be prouder.” Being a business that relies heavily on power and water, Master Valet Drycleaners and Apparel-

master is committed to sustainable business practices. They were early adopters of an electric van for local deliveries, reducing their carbon footprint. They've also made significant strides in minimising plastic usage on customers' garments. The new facility is equipped with water-saving methods and all steam pipes are insulated, reflecting their com-

mitment to sustainability. They are part of the Apparelmaster group's lnStep Sustainability programme, aiming to measure their carbon footprint and set goals for reducing it in the coming months. As a family-owned and operated business, Bev and Darryl emphasise the importance of having local faces behind the counter and on the phone, especially in a provincial town like Nelson. They have always been a part of the community, interacting with customers both socially and professionally. Their close-knit team is considered an extended family, and they take pride in creating a work environment where people are happy and feel valued. The couple's roles in the business complement each other well. Bev's background in finance complements Darryl's practical expertise, and together, they make a formidable team. Darryl's vision for the business, combined with Bev's managerial acumen, has led to their remarkable success. They also understand the importance of maintaining a work-life balance and

look forward to spending more quality time with their family. With their move to the new Gloucester St location now complete, Master Valet Drycleaners and Apparelmaster are open for business, offering the same high-quality dry cleaning, laundry services and workwear solutions. Their mission is clear: take your dirty clothes and furnishings in, and they will come back out clean and fresh. If you have any workwear needs, don't hesitate to get in touch with the team. The journey of Master Valet Drycleaners and Apparelmaster is a testament to the vision, dedication, and hard work of Bev and Darryl Hamilton. From humble beginnings to a thriving business with a strong commitment to sustainability, this local laundry expert has come a long way. Their move to a new, custom-fitted location on Gloucester St signifies a new chapter in their journey, and they are wellprepared to continue providing top-notch laundry services to the community.

Community stands behind kickboxers JACK MALCOLM When local kickboxers Lily Sinclair, Sarah Randall, Aaron Thomas and Miiguel Nunez make their debut at the Amateur World Championships, it will be just them, the referee and their opponent. But, for the four fighters as they prepare to embark on a trip of a lifetime to Europe, it has been a true team effort to get them to the starting line. Coached by former women’s World and European kickboxing champion Sallie McArdle, the team have been training two times every day in the build-up to the event. Sallie, who is travelling with the team as one of two New Zealand coaches, says it’s been a full community effort to get the team in the best shape of their lives inside and out of the ring. Not only have their clubmates

been eager to get in the ring to help with sparring, but several businesses around the community have also stepped up to help the team on their journey. With free gym memberships from Miki D’s, John Dawson from Equilibrium providing free chiropractic services and personal trainer Glenn Harding doing free functional training, the team has been swamped with support. They have also seen numerous businesses around the community get behind them in other ways, helping to raise funds through donations of their goods, time, money and even musical talent. Sallie says people were eager to jump on board when they heard about locals taking on the world, but there has still been a significant personal expense for the fighters to get them over the line. Alongside fighting in Romania, the team will start their trip in Ireland with training under sev-

up against the best in the world. While Russia, a powerhouse country in the sport, will not be attending, Sallie expects it will take between two and three wins to make it to the medal stages. “They’re all working full time, and a lot of the guys (and girls) they’ll come up against are fulltime athletes. Some of us are also mums and dads, it adds an extra workload. “I know this level inside and out and I wouldn’t be taking them if I didn’t know they could do it.” Lily Sinclair, Miiguel Nunez, Sarah Randall, Aaron Thomas and For the fighters, many of whom coach Sallie McArdle have been training twice a day in the build- have never been to Europe, there up to the Amateur World Championships in Romania. Marlborough’s Matthew Stretch top-scored with an unbeaten 99, but was unable to create the winning partnership as Nelson held onto the Newman Shield. Photo: Peter Jones.

Cricket’s prized Newman Shield remains in Nelson hands after a closely fought match at Blenheim’s Horton Park on Sunday. The holders eventually came out on top of the annual two-leg 50over clash after an arm-wrestle of a game, hitting the winning runs with six balls to spare and two wickets in hand. Marlborough won the toss and opted to bat first. They lost their first four wickets with just 31 on the board, Sukh Aulakh, Andrew McCaa, Luke Pannell and Corey Bovey unable

to get a start against spinner Ben Neale, who bagged 4-21 from 10, and the steady Tim O’Connor, who bowled 10 overs for just 23 runs. Fortunately for the home side, wicket-keeper batsman Matthew Stretch was able to provide an anchor for the Marlborough innings, forming several handy partnerships. He and Hunter Ruffell started the consolidation with a 26-run collaboration, before Matthew joined forces with Tom Sutherland to push the score past the 100 mark. Tom went for 21, the second top score, then Matthew added 18 with Harry Boyce

and 26 with Nick Weaver as Marlborough edged towards a competitive score. Debutant Kirk Nicholas fell for a golden duck with the score at 149, then Jaden Adams chipped in to push Marlborough to 180-9. However, the loss of Adams’ wicket saw the experienced former captain stranded one run shy of a well-deserved ton, scored off 116 balls with nine fours. Ronan Restieaux, 3-21 from 8.2 overs, and Michael Olsen, 2-52 from nine, joined Ben as the main wicket-takers for a Nelson side who bowled with accuracy and discipline.

Speedway’s fireworks event fills the stadium JODY SCOTT A packed house enjoyed a night of racing, fun and big bangs at the Grim Racing, Coca-Cola Fireworks Display combined with the Heartkids fundraising and cycle race at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway. Over 60 junior cyclists were scattered all over the track midway through the meeting to race around the track in aid of Heart Kids, the ‘Hearts Kids Bear’ on hand to support the kids of all ages that bought their bikes along to join in the festivities before the night ended with the sky lit up with the annual firework display. The crowd was entertained with a few rollovers before the Streetstocks turned up the hits in their final closed club championship race. Dylan Bensemann was an early casualty in the T.Q.’s, mayhem on the start of the first heat saw the car upside down across the start line ending his night’s racing, Joe Keen was another T.Q. driver who had an “up and over”

moment. A sudden engine failure with the 2nz T.Q. of Kayden Barker left Morgan Frost with nowhere to go but into the back of the Barker car then hit the wall heavily. The 25n Streetstock wagon of Doug Corbett became a target in the final heat of the Streetstocks, a huge hit from Cody McCarrison saw the red light come on and McCarrison put to the infield. A huge field of local youth Ministocks were joined by a few visitors, the wide range of speeds from the seasoned drivers to the new ones meant the faster cars had to duck and weave their way through the traffic, a couple getting it right while a few got it wrong, the choice of going inside or outside a big factor in deciding several race outcomes. The Quarter Midgets were enjoying plenty of track space with no visitors, the locals content to enjoy a relaxing night’s racing. Conley Webley took the feature win. See the full match report on

Little shredders tear down the trails JACK MALCOLM It was a busy day on the hillside as a large field of young riders took on the Codgers Kids Enduro on Saturday. With 120 little shredders registered, the event was at full capacity as the next generation showed off their mountainbiking skills. Enduro races require riders to make the ascents and descents on their bikes, with only the downhill portion of their ride timed as part of the race. With three stages, Koata Whetu, P51 and Tu Meke, the young rac-

ers had all manner of terrain, from smooth and flowy right through to tough and technical, to deal with over the day. Young riders in the U10 category were required to have a support adult following them for the race, U13 and U15 riders tore down the trails unassisted. And while they might be young, they were also quick. With the day all about having fun it was also a race, and the overall girl’s winner was Pippi Taylor, while the fastest boy was Harley Heyward. Event organiser Tayla Carson was impressed with the level of riding,

but also with the organisation of her team. She says it was impressive that they managed to keep the event on time with so many competitors, but it was the racers who provided the excitement. “It’s awesome, look how busy it is.” With summer ramping up, so is the upcoming calendar for Nelson Mountain Biking Club events. This weekend the third and final instalment of the XC series will commence at Kaiterteri Bike Park, while the third instalment of the Super D downhill series will be held at Codgers next Thursday.

Mic and Molley Heynekamp, the founders of Eddyline Brewery’s Taproom and Taqueria, began their journey in New Mexico, USA, during their university days. In 2016, they relocated to Nelson, New Zealand, where they established Eddyline Brewery & Pizzeria at 8 Champion Road. The expansion continued in 2019 when they moved the brewery to 15 Elms Street in Stoke. Despite their success, they missed the authentic New Mexican cuisine they had left behind. This led them to incorporate a taproom into the brewery space, offering their unique Mexican food in a more intimate setting. The Taqueria, open from Wednesday to Saturday starting at 11:30 am, has swiftly gained popularity. It provides a welcoming space for lunch, dinner, or snacks, with a relaxed and intimate atmosphere, including a dog-friendly patio area. Reservations can be made online, by phone, or

Their green-chile cheese smashburger is also a crowd favorite. The menu includes burritos, taco salads, buffalo wings, and more, catering to a wide range of tastes. The menu pairs perfectly with Eddyline Brewery’s award-winning beer. The company recently earned 18 medals at the Brewers Guild

Awards for their sustainably crafted beers. They utilize solar power for their all-electric brewery and have implemented CO2 capture technology from Earthly Labs, making them New Zealand’s first craft brewery to do so. They’ve also significantly reduced water consumption in beer production. Eddyline Brewery offers a diverse range of over 18 award-winning beers, from light low-carb lagers to rich barrel-aged stouts. All their beers are available for takeaway through their webstore or select grocery and liquor stores nationwide. Jiu-Jitsu sparring for men’s mental health ANTON MEYER Members of a local Jiu-Jitsu club have rolled for six hours straight to raise awareness of men’s mental health month. Tāhunanui’s Balance Jiu-Jitsu owner David Gordon has wanted to undertake something like this for a while and thought Movember was the best time to bring awareness to the issue. So, on Saturday, a Movember Roll-a-thon was held

at the club. “In our Jiu-Jitsu community there are a lot of people who have battles with mental illness like depression and anxiety,” David says. “I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety and kept it to myself for a long time.” Five men rolled for six hours straight on Saturday, which David says was both mentally and physically challenging. More than 50 others joined in throughout the day.

Those who attended in support, or participated, were invited to donate in support of the event. “Hopefully everyone who attends can pitch in anything they can, so they make a good donation to the Movember cause,” David said at the beginning of the day. David says his hope is that everyone opens up when they are not feeling okay and says its important to remember that it’s okay to express how you feel.
