MTB access agreement not reached three years on MAX FRETHEY

Local Democracy Reporter

A deal to secure ongoing access to popular mountainbike tracks in Nelson is still being worked on, three years after discussions first started. Nelson City Council resolved in 2020 to negotiate a funding agreement with Koata Limited to secure public access to the tracks, but a final deal remains unlikely until next year. Group manager community services Andrew White says an agreement with Ngāti Koata remains a priority. “The significance and complexity of a long-term agreement means council will seek input from the community,” he says. Consultation on the potential agreement will be conducted as part of the council’s Long-Term Plan which is expected to occur in early 2024. In a meeting in November 2020, council proposed a $100,000 budget for 2021 – consisting of an $80,000 grant and $20,000 for investigation works – to allow continued public access into the Codgers/Fringed Hill area, and to work to find an agreement. Now, three years later, almost $217,000 has been invested by the council for interim agreements that have ensured continued recreational access onto Ngāti Koata whenua.

Giving monarchs a fluttering start KATE RUSSELL Alison Kelso has loved monarch butterflies for as long as she can remember, and now she is helping 15 of them get a head start in life. Alison, who turns 82 next month, is keeping the cat-

erpillars indoors to protect them from predators such as paper wasps and praying mantis, which she says are “destroying” the species. “I grew up in Auckland in the 1940s and we always had monarchs. There were never any paper wasps back then,

there used to be so many more butterflies around. It really breaks my heart to see them in decline,” she says. “They are so special; I absolutely love them.” The monarch butterfly is one of the best-known butterfly species in New Zea-

land. Originally from North America, it was first recorded here in the mid-1800s. They are considered native to New Zealand because they flew or blew here without human help.

The Nelson Mountain Bike Club took over responsibility for managing access into the Sharlands area. Club chair Matt Ball says Nelson’s trail areas are an “incredibly important” part of the city. “We are very excited to see this moving in the right direction as far as securing long-term access. It’s great to have all the stakeholders working together on this. These trail areas are part of what gives Nelson its uniqueness and are a draw for tourists and residents alike.” Koata Ltd, on behalf of the Ngāti Koata Trust,

owns over 4500 hectares of forestry land that was purchased in 2014 as a commercial redress property under Treaty of Waitangi settlement legislation. Before the purchase, the land was publicly owned and home to recreation trails. Now, 80 per cent of Nelson’s trails are on, or accessed through, land owned by Ngāti Koata. Since 2014, the trails – namely in the Sharlands and the Codgers/Fringed Hill areas – have grown in popularity with upwards of 60,000 mountainbikers using some tracks annually. But in 2020, Koata Ltd advised the council that the presence of the

recreational activities on its land generated a considerable management burden with no beneficial return, and compromised the forestry activities of its tenant, Tasman Pine Forests Ltd. The death of a mountainbiker in the Sharlands Valley in 2020 also underlined health and safety risks for Koata Ltd. Because of these concerns, Koata Ltd indicated it would close public access to its land if no interim agreement was reached with the council ahead of developing a long-term formal agreement. Ngāti Koata did not respond to requests for comment.

Giving monarchs a fluttering start FROM PAGE 1 However, the introduction of the Asian paper wasp has caused a decline in monarch butterflies, and many people are now choosing to rear them indoors. “The wasps just suck everything out of them and all that’s left is what looks like a football sock,” says Alison. Praying mantis, pesticides, and a lack of food are also cited for their decline. Alison was a member of the Monarch Butterfly Society when she lived in Rotorua, but she didn’t revive her interest in them again until recently when he daughter gave her some swan plants. She left them outside at her Atawhai home until they had some eggs on them, then she brought them inside. “They are real-life transformers and incredibly educational. This is nature at its best,” she says.

Plea for van’s return SARA HOLLYMAN For 77-year-old Stephen Bond, mowing lawns for work is what keeps his household running. To do this he uses his 1000cc Suzuki super carrier, which also doubles as the only way to transport his wheelchair-bound wife. So, the couple are understandably upset that the unique van was stolen from their carport at Vosper St in Toi Toi on Saturday evening. The van is the only one like it in Nelson, with a distinctive orange light on the top and a personalized plate that reads ‘Bondie’. Stephen’s daughter Sarah says the theft has left her mother feeling stressed, which is not a good combination with her health issues. She suffers from Addison’s Disease, which stemmed from a mass which required the removal of her adrenal gland. It has left her mother reliant on regular medication and using a wheelchair to get around. “She can walk from her wheelchair to the toilet in her one-bedroom home with the assitance of rails everywhere, but that car is the only way dad can get her around,” Sarah says. The van was stolen on Sat-

The witnesses say they clearly remember discussing the number plate, and recall the van pulling over to let them pass as it was travelling slowly. “It overheats a lot, it doesn’t go up to 100kmh, well you can force it but it’s only 1000cc,” Sarah says. “The neighbours heard it take off at 11pm but thought it was my brother, so thought nothing of it,” Sarah says. “It wasn’t till the next day when dad went and asked them if they had heard anything they realised that’s when it was stolen. Sarah says, although the van

is worth around $10k, it’s the sentimental value that they are most annoyed about. “The car was supposed to be passed down to his grandkids, and dad’s had the plates for more than 25 years.” She says he has had to replace one of the plates previously, and it took “years” to sort out with the licensing agency. Stephen is using Sarah’s car this week to get to work, which she says funds his hobby of playing bowls. “It’s not an extravagant lifestyle they live, the work makes ends meet.” Anyone who has seen the vehicle or has any information can contact police on 105 quoting file number 231112/8466.

Investigations continue after man killed in Stoke assault

Fundraiser for well-being title GORDON PREECE Broadgreen Intermediate is warming up for a fundraiser to clinch a heavyweight of funds for a planned hauora [health and well-being] programme to support its more than 500 students. Teacher and fundraiser organiser, Eleanor Aleksich, says the fundraiser will be a screening of the film Stylebender, which chronicles New Zealand UFC star Israel Adesanya and his journey through his emotional scars from bullying, immigration and racism. She says the fundraiser, which will show at Suter Theatre on 4 December from 6pm, will also feature a Q&A session with cast member, Motueka resident and Adesanya’s ‘possibilities manager’, Janet Redmond. “She’s agreed to help support [the hauora] programme with teaching skills and some

The man fatally assaulted at a Stoke property on Friday night has been remembered by family and friends, as police continue to hunt those responsible for his death. James Whitikau Barton, known as Whitikau, 48, died after he was assaulted at an Orchard St property. Police were called to the address at 7pm and found him with critical injuries. He was rushed to hospital and died soon after. Detective inspector Lex Bruning says he believed the people involved in the assault were known to the man. A scene examination at the Orchard St property was completed over the weekend and a second address in Motueka was also combed by forensic teams on Monday. “We are confident in the progress made in our inquiries,” Lex says. Police are still seeking the owner of a white BMW X5 station wagon with the registration BMW693. “We believe this vehicle is of interest to the investigation and are seeking to locate it,” he says.

“Police are working to determine exactly what happened ... residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area over the coming days.” Lex says he has “a small, hard-working team” on the homicide investigation and they were “dedicated to piecing together the events that have unfolded leading up to the death in order to identify those responsible”. “Our thoughts are with his family and police will work to support them through this difficult time as we investigate to give them answers. “Staff from across the Tasman district will be adding to our efforts in the coming days to provide further assistance and support to the investigation team.” A post-mortem examination has been carried out and Barton’s body has been returned to his family. Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 105 and refer to file number 231110/4270. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

of the tools that she uses in her career as a psychotherapist, as a counsellor, as a possibilities manager and all the expertise that she carries,” Eleanor says. “We’ve decided to fundraise so that we could give her some money instead of her doing it for free because we think that there’s a lot of value in her work. “What kids bring to school is a plethora of issues and it’s affecting the school, the school work and social interactions, so having her come in and teach skills and tools to deal with the emotions, to deal with what’s going on at school and at home, that’s awesome.” Eleanor says 100 tickets for the event are up for grabs with proceeds going towards the programme. National honour for Barney GORDON PREECE A community leader for developing partnerships with mana whenua and local and central government has been honoured for his four decades of civil service. Barney Thomas was one of 24 Kiwis who received Te Tohu Ratonga Tūmatanui o Aotearoa, the New Zealand Public Service Medal, at Government House by Governor-General, Dame Cindy Kiro, on 6 November. The Te Tauihu [Top of the South] cultural advisor, member of numerous local organisations including the Wakatū Incorporation, and the local iwi manager for Te Papa Atawhai, Department of Conservation (DOC), says he thought it was a prank when he was informed that he would receive the medal. “I was gobsmacked because I wasn’t aware of me even being nominated. “There are probably thousands of other people in Nelson that deserve the medal more than I do,” he says. “My DOC colleagues and my boss [Roy Grose], decided to put the nomination in. “I’ve only just recently been made aware the councils and the mayors have supported my nomination as well. “Just recently my text messages and emails have gone up 200 per cent, I’ve had a lot of support from councils, the iwi, and other government departments

Photo: Gordon Preece. who have written letters of support that I was unaware of… bit overwhelmed with that.” Barney, who’s also a current land trustee at Te Āwhina Marae in Motueka and has a long list of organisations he’s served with, says his public service began in 1979 after finishing his education at Queen Charlotte College. “There was an old guy by the name of Bill Edwards, and he worked for Māori Affairs, and he came to me when I left school… and he said ‘I’ve got an opportunity for you, a Māori and Pacific Island cadetship’,” he says. “He said, ‘look, this opportunity doesn’t come easy, and if you stuff it up, I’ll kick you where the sun don’t shine’, and my father said ‘my foot will follow it’. “So, I started as a cadet with

the Department of Labour, and then moved across to Nelson [in 1981] and I was on the Nelson Conservation Board, and then I was encouraged to apply for the iwi managers role with DOC, and that was 33 years ago.” Barney, who has Ngāti Rārua, Ngāti Toa, Ngāti Tama, Te Ātiawa and Ngāi Tahu descent, says it had been a privilege to strengthen iwi values in environmental cases and legislation and policies set by local and central government. “The values align especially in the environmental area…a lot of people are now waking up to the fact that if we don’t do something about the environment, our next generation’s going to have to inherit those issues,” he says. “Even putting the rāhui on when we had the floods,

people knew that raw sewerage was going into the bay and for us it’s about health, and safety, but also about cultural safety, and if you put those three things together, people will understand and take the advice. “Dealing with the iwi politics as well as bureaucracy has been a challenge, but just making sure that everyone has a say, and one of the things you have to be good at is listening to what they have to say.” Barney also acknowledged his wife Shona, his three children, Renee, Fraser and Jackson, his work colleagues and his iwi, for his long service. The 63-year-old says he will continue to work with iwi when he retires in two years’ time. “Some of [the organisations] you don’t get off until you die,” he laughs.

Double-decker beach bus reinstated The wheels on the Tāhuna Summer Beach Bus will continue to roll round and round. The popular summertime service had operated thanks to a $16,000 grant from Nelson City Council (NCC) over the past six years, however financial constraints led the council to retire the service. The council highlighted that the expanded eBus service allows easier-than-ever travel for residents to the beach, reducing the need for the more expensive double-decker service. However due to a huge public outcry, the service has been reinstated by the Tāhuna Beach Holiday Park and Nelson Coachlines. “We were really sorry when NCC notified us of the grant discontinuing,” said Holiday Park chief executive David Pattinson. “We’re aware of the uphill financial battle council is facing in the wake of the flooding, so we weren’t overly surprised. Nevertheless, the double-decker bus is more an attraction than a means of transport, and we know from our stats that thousands use it every summer - both visitors to the region and the local community.” In the past, the Holiday Park was a financial partner in the service. After seeing the outpouring of community support, they decided to keep the service going with Nelson Coachlines. Uniquely Nelson has also made a financial contribution to the service. The service will run from 27 December to 20 January, 7 days a week from 10am to 4.30pm, between the Holiday Park, a stop at Tāhunanui Beach and the city via Rocks Rd.

Get your ship together! A safety message from the Nelson Harbourmaster

Nelson’s Colin Frewin will have works on display at the Craft Potters Nelson exhibition. Photo: Gordon Preece. We would like to thank all the people who came to the annual Marine Safety Expo over the weekend 4 and 5 November. There were some great conversations about how to stay safe on the water. Know before you go! With the increase in traffic on the water we have noticed an increase in the number of dangerous interactions with recreational craft in the Total Exclusion Zone during shipping movements. Please remember that large ships move much faster than they appear and need a lot of space to manoeuvre. This is why there is an exclusion zone when the ships are arriving and departing.

Clayin’ alive at pottery exhibition GORDON PREECE Showcasing pots of gold made by local potters is the material for an upcoming exhibition by a Hope-based pottery masterclass. Craft Potters Nelson committee member Margaret Earney says the exhibition, which will be in full spin on 18 and 19 November be-

tween 10am and 4pm at its Ranzau Rd studio, will feature works by about 30 of its 70-odd members. “A lot of our members work [on their pottery artworks] through the year, and this is just one way for them to sell their works and for us to showcase talent that’s in the area,” she says. “Some members sell in galleries across

the region, and some members just pot around at home for joy and gift it to people, so there’s a wide range of why people put stuff into the exhibition and the sale. “We’d love to see the community, even if they just come down and have a look at what’s happening, it’s a good chance for people to actually see what happens

at the club, we run lots of workshops on hand building and wheel work, and we run lots of different firing.” Margaret hopes the free entry exhibition would also entice attendees to visit its club days at the studio, held each Wednesday between 10am and 12pm to share knowledge, friendship, make ceramics and chat over lunch.

There is information on the TV at the boat ramp about shipping movements and you can also find out the latest information at portnelson.co.nz/portusers/shipping-schedule. If you see a large commercial ship arriving or departing, keep out of the channel and wait until it has moved before trying to pass. Sneaking up the side is not an option; tugs are in operation and may need to move out quickly. As always, to keep you and your loved ones safe: wear your lifejacket (put it on at the dock and take it off at the dock), take two waterproof forms of communication, check the weather and tides, avoid alcohol, and tell someone your intentions before heading out. In the event of an emergency, call 111 (Police), use VHF Ch 16 or activate your beacon. Brook St buyouts - Council aims to do the ‘right thing’ SAMANTHA GEE RNZ

Nelson City Council has offered to buy out 10 homes threatened by slip-prone land in Brook St at a cost of more than $5 million. The council is currently discussing buyouts with property owners, after the slip risk from council-owned land, which began during last August’s heavy rain, is higher than previously thought. Nelson Mayor Nick Smith said the weather event caused 18 slips on council land that damaged 33 private homes. Two of those have already been bought out by the council. Of those slips, three were in The Brook and the council planned to remediate them as part of a $17.3 million package approved in May. But further geotechnical inspections showed remediation

was no longer appropriate, as further rain this year meant the slips had become more widespread and unstable, posing a risk to 10 nearby properties. The council says purchasing the affected properties had a lower net cost and risk than any other option. But as the properties had not been red or yellow-stickered, Nick said residents were not aware of the risk and the offer of a buyout had come as a surprise. While the council was not legally required to buy the properties, he says it was the prudent thing to do, given the council was liable as the landowner. “We are part of this community, we want to do the right thing and that is why we want to work with these individual property owners … try and fairly compensate them for their properties but also make sure that we are keeping them safe and increasing the resil-

ience of the Nelson community to the increased frequency that we are likely to see in these sorts of storm events,” he says. All 10 property owners had been notified and the council was beginning to enter into negotiations. The estimated cost to buy out the 10 properties is about $5.6m in total. The buyouts will be funded by the $17.3m that had already been approved in the council’s annual plan for slip remediation. The details of individual negotiations are confidential, with council offering to pay for an independent registered valuer to carry out valuations for each property. The buyout of these 10 homes is in addition to the potential buyout of up to 14 homes that were damaged by slips from private property during August 2022, which is subject to public consultation.

New tumuaki for Nelson College for Girls After more than a year of searching, Nelson College for Girls has appointed a new tumuaki/principal. Claire O’Fee will be stepping into the role, commencing Term 1, 2024. Claire has come from a position at Te Akatea Māori Principals’ Association, a role which she had held since last January, working with Māori first-time principals and emerging Māori leaders. Previously, she was a professional learning and development facilitator at Poutama Pounamu, University of

Waikato and deputy principal at Ngāruawāhia High School. The college began advertising for a new principal in mid-2022 after Cathy Ewing announced her resignation. Cathy stepped down from the role at the beginning of this year, with deputy principal Heather McEwen stepping into the acting principal role. Claire said in a statement that through her various roles, she has built up a “kete of the skills and attributes necessary to guide and grow the community of Nelson College for Girls”.

“Working in a transformative manner toward a shared vision in community with students, whānau, staff, and iwi is something I value greatly.” Presiding member of the school’s Board of Trustees, Helen Taylor-Young, said in a statement that they had been working for “some time” on the recruitment of a new tumuaki. “This is not an undertaking the board has taken lightly, we are fully aware of the many challenges now and on the horizon in education..”

New section of Great Taste Trail wheels up GORDON PREECE An extra gear has been clicked on Tasman’s Great Taste Trail for travellers on two wheels. Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust officially opened a new add-on trail to the 200km Nelson Tas-

Administrator for the trust, Elizabeth Bean, says the cycling community believed the new trail was a “really good edition”. “The Great Taste Trail CRE ATIV E had 234,000 WAY S 2020 2021

users in the previous 12 months and that’s up 17 per cent on the previous year, so as we’ve built more trail more people have ridden the trail, so I think that’s the outcomes growing the usage,” she says. “Outcomes for local users are health and well-being, active transport, having a good time, and for visitors to the region, it gives them more trail to ride on and get them safely to Tāhuna. “Cycle tour operators in the region see it as a really good edition.” Elizabeth says the new trail’s construction didn’t saddle up until

this year, but it was planned when the Great Taste Trail concept pedalled forward in 2010. “The section of trail required quite close work with the Nelson Golf Course because it goes along a perimeter of the golf course, and whilst construction was on, that was really important to them that we didn’t interfere with golfers, so that relationship has been important,” she says. “The other bit that was key was the trail comes out a Awatea Pl and Nelson City Council’s been doing a big upgrade of [the Awatea Place pump station], and that project had challenges.

“In Nelson City the weather has been really wet, [the pump station has] run about 12 months behind so we’ve had to adjust our timeline.” Elizabeth says the total cost of the trail from the airport to Tāhunanui was $805,000, and it was funded by Nelson City Council and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. She says the trust’s next cycle project was a new offroad trail from Pokororo to Ngatimoti which will include four bridges and an elevated boardwalk. The project is expected to set in motion in April next year.

Radical shift in council forestry welcomed MAX FRETHEY

Local Democracy Reporter

Nelson City Council has made the decision to radically alter its approach to its commercial forestry in a move that’s been welcomed by local environmentalists. On Thursday, the council accepted a suite of recommendations from its Right Tree Right Place Taskforce that would see an end of clear-felled monoculture stands of Pinus radiata. While the recommendations didn’t explicitly call for an end to commercial forestry, it suggested that if any forestry continued, it should be done in a way that ensured a continuous canopy of mixed species to meet community values and address climate risks. However, the taskforce has indicated that only around 20 of the council’s 83 stands have commercial value. Conservation group Friends of the Maitai has longed campaigned for more sustainable forestry practices to improve the health of the Maitai River. Spokesperson Steven Gray says the council’s unanimous decision to make the transition was a

Friends of the Maitai members Jaquetta Bell, David Ayre, Tom Kennedy, and spokesperson Steven Gray say the council has adopted a “common-sense” approach. Photo: Max Frethey. “common-sense” approach to the city’s forest management. “We’ve been saying [council’s forestry] doesn’t make any money for years, especially when you consider the amount for remediating pollution and damage.” Steven applauded the adoption of a recommendation that would see the council manage all its 10,000 hectares of forest as one cohesive

unit rather than just focusing on transitioning its 600 hectares of commercial forestry. This approach would ensure the biodiversity and resilience of the entire forest estate isn’t left behind while focusing on the transitioning a few hundred hectares, and would involve greater control of invasive pests and weeds across the entire area.

“Taking that job of pest control more seriously across the whole estate will actually have a lot of economic benefit,” he says. “The recreational and lifestyle benefit of doing that is going to be big, of course that is hard to measure economically, but we know it has great economic impact.” Long-time critic of council’s forestry and taskforce member,

councillor Rachel Sanson, highlighted the forests’ importance ahead of the vote on the recommendations, speaking to their economic, recreational, ecological, and amenity value. “Taskforce members… finally landed on a way forward that we feel maximises all of the value and potential that the forests hold,” she said. “Council’s forestry has consumed an inordinate amount of my time and focus in the last four years and I’m really looking forward to putting all that good energy into something else.” Matthew Benge, the other councillor on the taskforce, said that the transition would be a longterm project but was still vitally important. “This is a legacy project. We will all be dead, and so will our children, when this gets to full canopy if it goes ahead,” he said. “To do nothing is not an option.” Because of the significance of the council’s decision, it will be consulted on during next year’s Long-Term Plan process.

Nelson Matters Hon Dr Nick Smith

REVITALISING OUR CENTRAL CITY The launch on Monday of the WHAT IF initiative is the discussion we need to have on revitalising our city. Our city retailers and hospitality businesses have had the toughest winter in decades. The problem is deeper than the current economic squeeze and recent disruption from Covid and the August 2022 storm. Richmond has over the past two decades been attracting an increasing share of the region’s retail spend and new commercial buildings. There is much about Nelson’s CBD that is good. I love our city streetscape, Church Steps, Suter, Theatre Royal, NCMA, Museum and the central location of Rutherford Park. Saturday’s Nelson Market is iconic. We have dozens of niche shops, bars and cafes that offer superb products and services. The Nelson City Centre ArtWalk is unique and world class. Council has done a great job over the past decade better connecting our city to the Maitai River. This year Council has improved transport into the city with the eBuses and upgraded cycleways. Council invests a lot in events to attract people such as Opera in the Park, Te Ramaroa and the Arts Festival. The next step is the proposed new city playground. I would also like us to do more to connect Nelson to the Haven and our beautiful waterfront. This year’s annual Council survey of residents tells us the biggest concern is transport. A Nelson City Centre survey in 2019 found the top priority that would encourage people to visit the city was better and more parking. A key reason the Junction has attracted tens of millions in investment is the ease of access from Whakatu Drive and the hundreds of carparks. The key to revitalisation is attracting more people into the central city – more locals choosing to shop and socialise there, more people living there, more tourists and international students visiting and more people working there. We need to be realistic about costs and who will pay. Ratepayer investment will be required but the biggest challenge is to make the city a great place for the private sector to invest. Drop into 263 Hardy Street to share your ideas on WHAT IF.

NELSON FORKTRUCKS Celebrating 30 years in business

1996

2013

2023

A family-owned business, dad Kim Murdoch, with children Layton Murdoch and Kayley Murdoch, and mum Colleen Bradley ‘with some of their grandchildren’. Nelson Forktrucks Limited has been proudly serving the Nelson community and beyond for three decades. What began as a small, family-owned business in 1993, with just one service van has since grown into a thriving enterprise. The business was founded by Directors Kim Murdoch and Colleen Bradley starting out working from home. Fast forward to today, and their operation has expanded to include a dedicated team and a comprehensive service offering. Over the years, Nelson Forktrucks has seen many changes, with both products and the agencies they represent. “Basically 30 years has flown by but our consistency to providing a good service specifically about forklifts hasn’t changed. It’s all been a great journey, and we have evolved, along the way. We have some great staff and built strong relationships with suppliers and clients,” says Colleen.

Coast, Marlborough, and as far as Canterbury. The growth and evolution of the business are testament to their unwavering commitment to providing topnotch forklift services. As the team at Nelson Forktrucks celebrates three decades in business, they have much to be proud of. Kim and Colleen attribute the long-standing success to their commitment to family values and delivering a topquality service. These principles have been the foundation of their operations and have helped them build strong relationships with both clients and suppliers. A business that specialises in forklifts, and everything related to them, Nelson Forktrucks offers an extensive range of services. They have a rental fleet of over

50 forklifts, encompassing various makes, models, and fuel types. They serve clients all over the South Island and have the authority to carry out WOF inspections on Exempt Class B equipment, which includes forklifts, tractors, loaders, and more. One aspect that sets Nelson Forktrucks apart is the strong family presence in the business. At one point, all four family members were part of the team, including their children Layton and Kayley. “Layton, who had previously completed his Automotive Apprenticeship with the company, took a five-year break to work with Heavy Diesel Equipment before returning to us as the Workshop Foreman. Kayley is pursuing a career in Health and

currently works for Public Health at the Richmond Health Hub. Other family and friends have worked with us over the years and currently still do.” Looking forward to the future of Nelson Forktrucks, it’s clear that the business is poised for continued success. With a commitment to ‘more of the same,’ and a focus on embracing technology, they are well-prepared to navigate the everevolving landscape of the forklift industry. “Layton is looking forward to further learning more about the environmentally friendly LithiumIon battery for electric forklifts, and its evolving technology.” “A crucial part of Nelson Forktrucks’ success is our dedicated team. Jeff, who joined the company 22 years ago, plays a pivotal role in coordinating operations. Sharon, is another integral team member.” Layton manages the workshop, with support from Brett, both of

whom are WOF Inspectors, and also mentor two apprentices, Jason and Jamie. Each member of the workshop team has their own service vehicle, fully equipped to handle on-site servicing and providing clients with exceptional service, wherever they may be located. Nelson Forktrucks Limited is a testament to the enduring spirit of family values, dedication to excellence, and unwavering commitment to the Nelson community. As they celebrate 30 years in business, they reflect on the incredible journey, remarkable achievements, and exciting prospects that lie ahead. Their personalised, locally owned, and operated approach sets them apart in the industry, ensuring their clients continue to receive the high-quality service they’ve come to expect over the past three decades.

“We have been in 10 Cargill Place, Richmond, since 1996. We find this a good central base for our business which services many primary industries, fishing, forestry, horticulture and support to building and construction. You would be surprised how many businesses use a forklift, they can be handy for almost any business!” Today, they operate independently and specialise in serving the Top of the South region, extending their reach to Golden Bay, West

Layton in the workshop with the new “green” Lithium Ion electric forklift.

The Nelson Forktrucks team at 10 Cargill Place, Richmond has proudly served the Nelson community and beyond for three decades.

Celebrating a Decade of Excellence: Nelson Marlborough Traffic Management In 2013, a venture that was to be become known as Nelson Marlborough Traffic Management (NMTM) was born. Formerly known as STMS Forestry Services, NMTM was born out of necessity and passion, and is the brainchild of Director Lorraine Klenner. Seeking a new direction in life, Lorraine's journey in the industry began as a 'Lollypop Lady' on forestry projects. Recognising the need for qualified, efficient, and safe Traffic Management services specifically catering to the forestry industry

and taking a leap of faith, Lorraine purchased her first set of signs and began slowly building a team of local friends and family. Fast forward ten years, and NMTM remains a testament to Lorraine's dedication, serving clients across multiple industries, and those family members and locals that first comprised the team have become an integral part of the business. “I have loved growing my business and cultivating a supportive environment where my staff often come in with little to no

I must say that the relationships I’ve built with my clients, who have become friends, brings me much joy.” Lorraine values and acknowledges the camaraderie amongst industry peers and the unity displayed during community challenges, like the August floods and Pigeon Valley fires, which highlighted the collective spirit amongst traffic management companies, councils, and contractors in the region. In 2021, Lorraine's commitment was acknowledged with the Outstanding Regional Services Performance award from Top of the South Forestry Awards. This accolade reflects not only Lorraine's passion but also the team's collective efforts in delivering outstanding services to clients. “Winning these Awards was one of my proudest professional moments. It was wonderful to be recognised

for the hard work and effort that my team and I put into providing excellent service throughout the region. I have developed close relationships with my clients over the past 10 years, some of whom have become close friends. I enjoy providing them with excellent service and I also enjoy the challenge and problem solving that’s involved in designing and executing an effective traffic management plan that allows them to continue working while keeping their staff and the public safe. People I work with have become second family and we have staff that have developed close knit relationships where we spend time together outside of work.” The company proudly operates by the motto, "We love doing our job really well, which makes your job safer for both your workers and the public." This commitment has allowed NMTM to grow into a company that can safely man-

age multiple jobs throughout the Nelson-Marlborough regions simultaneously. Lorraine encapsulates the essence of NMTM as locals who employ locals and serve locals. Choosing NMTM means supporting a small, family-owned, and operated business that values the community it serves. Moving forward for the future of the business, Lorraine says she would like to continue focusing on improving their standard within the industry. “We are growing at a rapid rate, and I am excited to see where we go. For myself, I’d like to be retired in the next 10 years! Eventually my son Philip will take the helm. I hope to leave my business with the legacy of being one of the best in the region. Of course, I’m unsure if I’ll ever truly ‘retire’ but I would like to have more time to spend with my grandchildren and family.” Taking a moment to show gratitude to her supporters over the past ten years, Lorraine says, “Thank you to all of our won-

I have to say a heartfelt thank you to my amazing team who work tirelessly every day to provide the service our clients needs, thank you to all the supportive partners and all of the amazing businesses and individuals who have collectively helped shape Nelson Marlborough Traffic Management into

a successful business.” As NMTM celebrates a decade of hard work, dedication, and growth, it invites clients to experience the excellence that has become synonymous with their name. For NMTM, a job well done is not just a motto; it's a commitment to ensuring safety for both workers and the public. Three shows in three hours for Nelson Youth Theatre KATE RUSSELL The Nelson Youth Theatre Company is treating families to three shows in three hours this weekend, all under the direction of parents and students. A cast of 90 youth will be presenting The Secret Garden, Cinders: The True Story, and Little Red Whittington on Sunday at the Theatre Royal. Richard Carruthers from the company says he is taking a backseat in his usual directing role, with two parents and one student taking the reins. “In January, I ran a directing course for parent directors, and they have been working on these shows all year. These are their masterpieces.” The Secret Garden is being directed by Amanda Lockwood, and Richard says it is a “well-recreated” version of the muchloved story, and many will know the book. Cinders: The True Story is a pantomime being directed by Isabelle Bollaert and retells the classic Cinderella tale with a few twists and witty wordplay. “It has a variety of old and new pop songs, with lots of slapstick, custard pies in faces, and lots of

It’s a lot of fun,” says Richard. Student director Evie Mintrom will then bring her creation, Little Red Whittington, to the audience close to the interval. Richard describes this as a “unique situation” when two

companies, each about to perform a different pantomime - Little Red Riding Hood and Dick Whittington - combine forces and do the two as one. “It’s just a bit of fun and mayhem.” Richard says with the combo of plays, it will be a great “three-

hour family entertainment session”. There are two showings at the Theatre Royal on Sunday, 19 November, at 2pm and 6pm. Tickets are $19 for under 19s, $29 for adults or $27 for seniors. Go to www.theatreroyalnelson.co.nz

to purchase tickets. Nelson Weekly has two double passes to give away to the 2pm show. Email kate@nelsonweekly with your name and contact number by Friday, 17 November to go in the draw.

Let’s cut to the chase and get this question answered straight out of the gate. Is it cool to gift second-hand this Christmas? Absolutely. Second-hand doesn’t mean what it used to. Gone are the days of the term being said alongside a sneer and childhood flashbacks of big black rubbish bags filled with your cousin’s hand-me-down clothes. To be clear, we’re not talking old socks, a semi-functioning lawn mower or half-used tube of mascara. Think more like near-new ceramics, furniture, handbags, bikes,

homeware, power tools, anything vintage, records, sentimental items that can’t be found easily anymore, LEGO, and books – just to name a few. Second-hand doesn’t need to mean ‘used’ anymore, and there’s a lot of unwanted stuff in the world that can be repurposed, reloved, or revived. Is it OK to give this stuff as a gift? We say yes!

Nelson has a great range of secondhand and charity shops brimming with pre-loved clothing and homeware. Our op shops are a treasure-trove of vintage and interesting items that can make fabulous gifts. Buying second-hand helps you save money and reduces waste going to landfill. Don’t forget that op shops depend on your donations of clean and undamaged used clothing and goods to continue to be fabulous shopping destinations. Whether you’re in the market for something new to you or maybe thinking of a Christmas clearout, Council’s handy Op Shop Map and Guide is a great place to start. Pick up a copy from Nelson City Council’s Customer Service Centre, download a copy from nelson.govt.nz/ op-shops or email rethinkwaste@ncc. govt.nz if you would like a copy mailed to you. Step into a world of treasures at Eclectic Antique Centre, a name that truly embodies the diverse and fascinating collection within. Owned and operated by Maria Henare, a seasoned veteran in the antique trade for over three decades, Eclectic is a labyrinth of eras and styles, ranging from the bold and beautiful to the rustic and weathered. Eclectic is not just a store; it's an experience. The range spans Victorian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Mid Century, and

Retro pieces, reflecting its name perfectly. The dedicated team source new treasures regularly and the thrill of the chase defines Maria's passion for uncovering pieces of the past. Alongside the obvious environmental benefits, the idea that pre-loved item’s have been loved before and can be loved again is exciting. “We have also built a new covered department that houses a wide selection of DIY and building supplies.” The new DIY shop helps to reduce the amount of building material going to landfill. “Besides your usual second-hand finds, you’ll find everything from hardware, plumbing, and bathroom supplies to electrical lighting, flooring, and windows.” The Salvation Army Family Stores, which are located in the Montgomery Square Carpark and in Queen Street Richmond, are the ideal places for you to donate good quality clothing and homeware items. Funds raised by the family stores provide food parcels, advocacy, emergency housing and support for people in need within the Nelson-Tasman area. Your generosity helps transform lives and builds stronger communities. If you would like to make a difference, we invite you to become a volunteer or donate to our stores.

We welcome your donations of good quality items from fashion to furniture, toys to trinkets, CDs to collectables, books to homeware. How do I donate? Bringing Everest to your backyard ANTON MEYER AND JACK MALCOLM While the real Mount Everest might be on the other side of the globe, it hasn’t stopped several locals from tackling the challenge of scaling the world’s tallest mountain. John Butler, Aidan Robinson and Tyler Davy are just three of the dedicated, or crazy few who have taken on the task of climbing the 8848 metres of elevation equivalent to conquering Everest. It was John who first took on the challenge, biking up and down 12-and-a-half laps of Fringed Hill in his Red Band gumboots over 30 hours. Having gone into the challenge “cold turkey”, he says it had been harder than expected to do the ride in his gumboots and flat pedals with toe straps, taking him about six hours longer than he planned. While he was riding, some buddies came along and rode with John to keep him motivated, but he says the hardest moments were in the early hours of the morning. “That was where my body was telling me to go to sleep”. John raised over $1000 for Gumboot Friday as part of his ride, saying that it was an easy choice to get behind an organisation that provides so much good in the community. “I think it’s a great cause, something I want to get behind and

support as much as I can.” John, who is the co-founder of Nelson’s mountainbiking shop Gravity, and his ride also had flow on effects, inspiring Aidan to take on the challenge himself. The 17-year-old works and rides for Gravity and decided it was something he also wanted to do. “I’ve always been kind of keen and a couple months ago John did it. “So I cracked the whip, dived in and decided to give it a go.” Richmond resident Aidan had initially just wanted to challenge himself, but with some convincing from a friend decided to also help raise some funds for a worthy cause. He says he chose Bike Hub Nelson to support because he “liked what they are doing” and it seemed like a good fit. Having ridden for the past six years, he says he’s never done something as big as this and expects to take about 24 hours when he gets underway on 2 December. “I’ve been trying to get out for as many long rides as possible. My longest was 54km and 3000 metres of elevation, just under half of the whole thing. “It’s going to be brutal.” Aidan says during that training session there had been one lap that had really “zapped” him and it’s going to be interesting to see how he goes at tackling the full challenge. Having also picked to do his chal-

He will start his challenge at Easby Bike Park at 4pm on Friday and is raising money for the Nelson Mountain Bike Club, with funds going towards trail maintenance.

“I know Amelia would be super proud of what we’ve done for her” is the message from a father who competed in the recent Nelson Half Marathon with his colleagues, friends and family, to remember his late daughter. Nelson Alarms senior security technician, Damien Hill, lost his daughter Amelia in July after a seven-month battle with neuroblastoma, only one month short of her second birthday. Damien says he was “overwhelmed” and “grateful” for the donations from the community and his closest supporters. Photo: Gordon Preece.

New King to be crowned at Kohatu This weekend sees the third annual running of Nelson Car Club’s Mitre 10 Mega Nelson King of Kohatu, held over Saturday and Sunday at Kohatu Park. Returning champion Scott Alexander will be form favourite, sharing the spectacular Semog Crosscar with his brother, and machine’s owner, Tim Alexander. Paul Bugler completes a trio of Marlborough Crosscar drivers who will be up against young gun Ollie Ward from Wellington in his similar machine. Ollie will be sharing his Cross car with another young driver, Ryan Howden, who is making the trip to King of Kohatu from Invercargill. Ryan is the South Island ambassador for Heartkids NZ and is very excited to be given the opportunity to debut at the event in a first time drive in the Semog Crosscar. “I’m really looking forward to the event, we have wanted to come up for The King of Kohatu for ages, so to be able to do it in one of these Crosscars is amazing,”

says Ryan. Heart Kids NZ is a charity organisation providing crucial, lifelong support, information, connection and hope to heart kids and their whānau. Heart Kids NZ is the only national organisation in Aotearoa dedicated to providing that support. “We help at every step of the journey; from diagnosis, through childhood, the teenage years and into adulthood. Our practical and emotional support is vital in helping individuals and families cope with the day-to-day challenges of living with a childhood heart condition”. Another returning champion is Marlborough’s Jason Clark, although this year he will not be competing in his Lancer Evo rally car. Having sold the car that he won with in 2021, he is now competing in a Toyota Starlet powered by a Suzuki motorcycle engine. This new car may not be competing for overall honours this year, but the screaming motorcycle engine in the lightweight

Last year’s 4WD winner and Nelson Car Club president, Carey Harwood, will be doing his best to repeat his winning effort from last year in his Subaru Impreza. Both his children will also be contesting in their Honda Civics,

competing in what’s expected to be a large U16 youth class. “The venue and this event are just awesome as a place young people can come and learn to drive in a safe and controlled environment. Every year we see more and more youth coming out to compete,

I’m always amazed at how quickly they learn some pretty impressive car-control skills,” Carey says. King of Kohatu is open to all manner of vehicles, from the spectator favourite Semog Crosscars and fully modified four wheel drive rally cars to standard road cars. The road cars will be competing in their own class, affectionately named the ‘Mums Car’ class. The cars will be outside the Nelson Classic Car Museum for technical inspections from 6pm on Friday night, this will be open to the public that would like to come down and see the different machines that will be taking part. The event itself starts on Saturday at Kohatu Park at 9am. Saturday sees four qualifying runs for all competitors, Sunday has two more followed by “knockout” elimination runs, splitting the field down from an expected 60 competitors to the top 32, then 16, 8, 4 and finally the top two run-off, on Sunday afternoon when this year’s King of Kohatu will be crowned.

Suburbs Women eager to attract the best JACK MALCOLM An impressive inaugural season for the Nelson Suburbs’ women’s Southern League team has the club eager to continue growing their presence in the elite women’s space. With an average age of just over 17-years-old the team outperformed expectations, was a launching pad for several higher honours and has set strong foundations to continue growing into the future. The Suburbs’ Women’s Southern League and reserve players are a space for anyone in the region who But, despite their success, there were a number of players who wants to push themselves to the next level of football. Photo: Supplied. weren’t aware of what the team is looking to establish in the region, says head coach Neil ‘Geeza’ Harding. He views the team as a pseudo-representative side of the best local women footballers, in echoes of Tasman United, and says there were several players who joined throughout the season who hadn’t realised the role the team wants to play in the footballing community. While they wear the Suburbs’ blue, he says they might not have been clear enough that the team is open to anyone who thinks they have what it takes to play against the best footballers in the South Island. “It’s a team to represent the region. “It’s for people who want to play at a higher level and showcase their skills. . . there’s other players around here who are too good just to be playing in the first division.”

The team finished third on the leaderboard this season, but Geeza says they outperformed expectations. He says, with some extra experience in the mix they would have been a force to be reckoned with. And with such a young team, they had five players, Abi Platt, Jasmine Barney, Katie Pugh, Khara Bouterey, and Giselle Rynvos, selected to play in the National Youth League for Canterbury United Pride Youth, who after six rounds are unbeaten and on the top of the table. They have also seen their captain Anna McPhie selected for the Canterbury United Pride in the National League, awarded the Southern League title for midfielder of the year as well as being shortlisted for the Sport Tasman Sportswomen of the Year. Katie Pugh, who made the trip over from Blenheim for training and games, secured New Zealand’s place at the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup with a 95th-minute winner at the OFC Championship final in Tahiti. “These girls wouldn’t have that opportunity without this team,” says Geeza. While their first season is in the books, Geeza says there is still a core group of girls who are doing “pre-preseason training”. He says it would be the perfect time to come down and see what the team is all about, with training on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Inspired by a love of larvae... and the ocean. One of the things Shenae Wales loves most about aquaculture is its enormous potential to feed the world sustainably—and Te Tauihu (Top of the South) is at the center. Born and raised in Whakatū Nelson, Shenae was just 17 when she started in the industry, inspired by a love of marine biology and the ocean. “I got in on the algae side of things, then moved into shellfish, specifically geoduck,” she says. “Under the microscope it is such a cool animal, looking around for a place to burrow.” She worked while studying, graduating with a Bachelor of Aquaculture and Marine Conservation at NMIT, and accumulated plenty of industry experience before becoming an aquaculture tutor at NMIT Te Pūkenga. Shenae is also completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Aquaculture at NMIT. “I am doing my post-grad research on sea cucumbers, which are potentially a huge export market for New Zealand.”

Aquaculture is the fastest-growing food production industry in the world, and there is plenty of scope for anyone wanting to enter the industry. “You can do anything from opening mussels in a factory, joining a boat crew on a salmon farm in the Sounds or the Twizel canals, or working with microscopic algae in a lab,” says Shenae. “If you love the ocean, enjoy being outdoors, love science, or are keen on research and development - there’s a role for you in aquaculture.” At the 2023 New Zealand Aquaculture Conference, in front of 400 delegates, Shenae spoke about aquaculture training at NMIT Te Pūkenga. “I shared a bit about my journey in the aquaculture industry, the great facilities ākonga have access to, and what it means to learn in the region where most New Zealand aquaculture produce is grown.” Interested in studying aquaculture and marine conservation? If you keep your CV in a Word document, you can easily get information from it to put into online applications.

Prepare for interviews - Find out more about the organisation online – its products, services, and key people. • Reread the job description to prepare for questions you may be asked. Make sure you have questions ready to ask them, and evidence of your achievements. • Practise your interview by writing out possible questions you’ll be asked and getting a friend to interview you. Prepare for tests - You may be tested on your skills (writing, customer service, typing) or your personality when you go to an interview. Get prepared by practising mock tests. Practice tests can be found online, for example at New Cops New Zealand • Attend interviews - First impressions do count, so make sure you wear something that’s smart, simple and looks professional.

LOVE ANIMALS & NEED EXTRA INCOME? DOGGIE HOLIDAY HOMES We are looking for loving homes to care for friendly dogs whilst their owners are on holiday. We screen the dog & match it to the most suitable family and you get to meet the dog before accepting. You will need to have a secure section, be happy for the dog to sleep inside your home and walk it on a daily basis. Someone will need to be home for at least part of the day and not have a cat. For further info: please email admin@petsittersnz.co.nz

www.petsittersnz.co.nz

• Work out how you’ll get to the interview, and how long it’ll take you to get there so you're not late. Be confident when answering interview questions and speak clearly. Keep it positive by not criticising previous employers. Be ready to give examples from your previous experience that demonstrate your knowledge and skills. Choose your referees - Employers usually ask you for at least two referees – people they can call to check your work experience and find out whether you will fit into their organisation. Choose referees who are reliable and professional, and easy to contact. • Getting a job offer - Being offered a job is exciting. Although it’s natural to want to accept it straight away, take the time to consider the offer because your reputation could be at stake if you back out later.

Three years ago, Brendon and Rochelle Mathews first opened The Bike Station in central Nelson and today the vibrant, expanding business has fantastic stock and a passionate, experienced team. Rochelle says contrary to what some may think, Ebikes aren’t a lazy option. “Ours are pedal-electric, so you still have to pedal but you get assistance as

you need it, so they’re suited to anyone, including those with a medical condition. “Using an E-bike allows me to get uphill quickly and ride for longer. They’re great enablers. I can do a

Staff are a massive part of The Bike Station. “Without them, we wouldn’t be here today,” Rochelle says. From the outset, Brendon and Rochelle have been focussed on having high-quality staff and, because they all have significant experience with bikes, the couple have 100% faith in their ability to provide fantastic service. Yohann, who is from the UK, says, “It’s been useful to experience how bike shops operate in other countries, including New Zealand. I picked Nelson because of its awesome mountainbiking trails and The Bike Station had cool brands, a nice workshop and it’s a great place to work.” Meanwhile, two-time national track cycling champion and national record

holder Kaio, loves working at The Bike Station while teaching young bike enthusiasts (in schools) how to ride and it helps build up the local junior base. Hunter, who has recently left college has been working fulltime at the store since November last year. “I’ve done a lot of mountainbike racing, so my passion has inspired me to work here as a bike mechanic and be part of the mountainbiking community. It’s an awesome business and getting to work on bikes all day long is great.” Lindsay, who has been with The Bike Station for just under two years, says he had been looking to get back into the bike industry as a mechanic after a stint in Whistler, Canada. “This is a nice place to work; a good bunch of guys. They have the same kind of passion that I have for mountainbiking, so it’s a no-brainer really.” Finally, Sam began working for the business in December after moving from Auckland. “I started as a customer and ended up working here; I love the team; we all get on well. It’s always a good sign of a great workplace
