NELSON CITY COUNCIL

ELECTIONS Winners:

Rachel Reese: A landslide victory for the mayor is a huge vote of confidence in her leadership of the city. Can rightly claim a strong mandate for the next three years. Tim Skinner: Highest polling councillor, he is a man who is known to blaze his own path in the chamber. Would be delighted with the result. Nick Smith: This election has provided him with a Southern Link-friendly council, which he needs if the road is to become a reality. Mel Courtney: Elected again, 42 years after he first stood for Nelson City Council.

Losers: Pete Rainey: Was the underdog in the mayoral race, but no one expected him to lose by as much as he did. Graeme O’Brien: Worked hard in the campaign and ran for the mayoralty and council. Would be disappointed not to get on council. Ruth Copeland and Eric Davy: Multiple term councillors ousted. Local body elections: Only 52 per cent turn out. Not good for democracy, online voting has been talked about and now should be re-examined. Diversity: Only two women have been elected as councillors from 12 positions.

Four new councillors But Fulton and Brand left dangling as final votes counted Andrew Board Nelson has at least four new councillors but is waiting on final vote-counting to see whether there will be a fifth. Mike Rutledge, Bill Dalhberg, Stuart Walker and Mel Courtney were all elected to council on Saturday’s local body election in what will be seen as a big swing to the right. Provisional results released on

Saturday had Trudie Brand as the final elected councillor, but as more votes were counted incumbent Kate Fulton had overtaken Brand by 19 votes. Vote counting will be completed on Thursday but the official annoucement will be made next Monday. Candidates can request a recount if they wish. Mayor Rachel Reese was the biggest winner on the day, collecting more than double the

votes of her nearest rival, Pete Rainey, in a landslide victory. But for Mike, Bill, Stuart and Mel, Saturday was a very satisfying day. All said they were delighted to be elected and that the proposed Southern Link was an issue they’d like to see move forward. The Southern Link would see a new state highway built from Annesbrook to Port Nelson,

and it now has at least eight councillors and the mayor who support it. Only Brian McGurk, Matt Lawrey and Luke Acland are against, as is Fulton. Elected councillors are: Tim Skinner; Brian McGurk; Mike Rutledge; Paul Matheson; Matt Lawrey; Gaile Noonan; Bill Dahlberg; Luke Acland; Ian Barker; Stuart Walker; Mel Courtney and either Trudie Brand or Kate Fulton.

Reese wins re-election

Andrew Board

The day after her landslide victory over Pete Rainey for the Nelson mayoralty, Rachel Reese was honouring one of her campaign promises – to set a wedding date. Reese collected 10,611 votes, against her major rival Pete Rainey’s 4500 in the provisional results released by Nelson City Council on Saturday afternoon. At her campaign launch six weeks earlier, Rachel finished her speech by promising her fiancée and campaign chair Richard Harden a date for their wedding after the election. On Sunday, still basking in her big win, she says it was “discussed” over lunch. “But I have nothing to announce, yet.” It caps off a stellar weekend for Reese, not only for her own numbers but for the councillors who were elected on with her. Of

Rachel says the changes mean there is a chance for a more united council. “We have an oppor-

tunity now to really work together on some of the tough issues. Nelson’s ready and I’m ready to realise some of the opportunities sitting out there. I think we have a very bright future.” She says her re-election shows that Nelsonians have faith in her leadership of the city. “I’ve just got to thank the people

of Nelson because it’s a real vote of confidence for the direction I’ve set for the city. Quite humbling, an absolute privilege again. I love the role and certainly quite an affirming result.” Her major opponent, Pete Rainey, hosted a more somber election party at the Freehouse on Saturday. “I have to say it was disappointing that the election campaign was affected by dirty politics and I hope the people involved in that have a think about how this sort of thing impacts on the political scene – being subjected to this sort of muckthrowing no doubt has an influence on whether good people are prepared to put themselves forward for public office.” He says he’s looking forward to spending more time with his family and throwing himself into the music and events industry.

Prior to his civic reception at the Cawthron Steps on Saturday, plans were in place for him to spend 15 minutes after the ceremony “roaming the streets and signing autographs”. An hour after the ceremony finished he had only just made it down the steps, after convincing well-wishers he’d continue to sign autographs and take selfies once he was down there. The double gold and one silver medal winner signed everything from t-shirts, forearms,

More than 1000 people had earlier come to see him honoured for his efforts in Rio and in true Liam Malone style his acceptance speech was off the cuff and from the heart. He thanked Nelsonians for their financial contributions to his blades. No other region gave him more of a financial backing three years ago when he was trying to turn his sprinting dream into a reality. Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge received a ‘lucky’ donation last week after the winner of a competition at Mitre 10 Mega Nelson decided to give his prize away to people “who need it more than me”. Alistair Forde won $1500 last week in a Mitre 10 Mega Nelson promotion after purchasing some outdoor furniture during the store’s three-day Outdoor Furniture Expo. He put his docket in the draw for the competition and last Monday got a call from Mitre 10 saying he had won his money back. “I almost thought it was someone playing a hoax because I never win anything,” Alistair says. “I was lucky to win this too, because I wasn’t going to put my docket in the bucket - I only did it because my wife told me to do it.” But instead of pocketing the $1500 prize, Alistair decided to give it away. He donated half to the Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge and the other half to a family member “who needs it more than me”.

“The women and children who are affected by their social conditions need help, so it’s a very good cause,” Alistair says. Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge manager Katie O’Donnell says they were delighted to get Alistair’s donation last week. The refuge is mostly funded by the Ministry of Social Development but needs additional income to keep operating, so donations are always welcomed. “Those kind of generous donations don’t just keep us going, they gladden our hearts as well,” Katie says. “It makes us feel that what we do is worthwhile and that people notice.” Alistair is also hoping that after his big win, his wife Julie won’t be so opposed to him going shopping for man-things at Mitre 10. “I love shopping there,” he says. “I’m always sneaking down there to buy stuff and my wife keeps telling me off.” Mitre 10 Mega Nelson marketing manager, Murray Leaning, says they run the Outdoor Furniture Expo competition every year and this year “we got absolutely slammed” with entries.

Moving Lewis ‘high’ on council agenda Andrew Board Incoming councillors are set to be briefed about a possible by-law that “creates the type of environment we want for a vibrant CBD”, but one that could also see Lewis Stanton removed from his Trafalgar St protest. Mayor Rachel Reese says Nelson City Council is looking “at all avenues” after several weeks of counter-protests from city retailers and opponents to Stanton’s ongoing protest. “It’s not actually about getting rid of Mr Stanton, it’s about having a by-law that creates the type of environment that we want for a vibrant CBD, and I want officers to see whether there are options through bylaw provisions. But you have to remember that we have pursued avenues like that before,” she says. That signals that a by-law could be implemented across the whole CBD which includes a condition that Stanton would break if he continued with his current protest. When asked if a by-law was the best way to remove Stanton from the main street, Rachel said: “I’m not in a position at this stage to disclose our legal

Photo: Jessie Johnston. advice because I need to brief incoming councillors.” Her comments come a day after another protest by residents at the same spot of Stanton’s ongoing protest. Ru Dawson was the man behind the latest counterprotest. He says he was inspired after seeing Patsy Craig and Margaret Bowler counterprotest last Sunday. “I’m just a Nelson resident, ratepayer and just had enough,” says Ru. “I was just sick of it, as lots of other people are, and last Sunday I saw Patsy and her friend sitting here. I thought, ‘here’s an opportunity to get people’s attention’.”

The protest began at noon and attracted around 50-60 people. While the demonstration was only planned for one day, Ru says if the issue is not resolved they will continue their efforts, people even talking to him about sleeping on the street. Rachel says she understands frustrations but she hopes to include retailers who have been vocal on the issue in a working group to find a solution. “I understand the community’s frustrations, in particular the retail community. I could say that the law is an ass and that’s how I feel about it at the moment, but I have to work with it.”

PROSSER’S POINT New Zealand First puts this country, its people and its economy first, as our name states. We are totally against the neo-liberal agenda that National follows, which has been so detrimental to the nation, the regions in particular. The regions matter to the whole country, but despite producing the bulk of the exports they get little in return. Great wealth has been stripped out of here and very little has been put back. We do not believe in playing one part of NZ off against the other. We believe in a fair go for all. Now we have a government obsessed with Auckland issues, and pre-occupied with problems resulting from record immigration mainly to Auckland. One policy New Zealand First has that will give money back to the regions is 25 per cent of the royalties for mining of minerals, such as coal, limestone, lignite and gold to stay in the regions. It would go into a special purpose investment fund administered by the relevant regional council and used for a wide range of regional community projects and initiatives. If this had been in place in 2012-13 more than $80 million would have gone towards regional development. Royalties should also be paid by the water exports.

Trespassing riders told to own up Simon Bloomberg

The Nelson Mountainbike Club will this week start naming and shaming riders who trespassed into an active logging area on private forestry land in the Maitai Valley. Tasman Pine informed the club last month that a number of mountain bikers have been ignoring the 'no entry' signs and

tape at the entrance to a logging site on Sharlands Rd. The majority of the club's tracks are built on Tasman Pine land and club secretary Paul Jennings says they are concerned that the trespassers are not only putting lives at risk but also jeopardising future access to the tracks. The club has notified their members through the club's e-newsletters, website and Facebook page

that the tracks in that area are closed due to logging. However, a small number of riders have been recorded on security cameras in the restricted area and can be clearly identified in the images. The club has asked riders who trespassed in the area "to put their hand up" and Paul says they got a good response with about 90 per cent of the riders contacting the club. Those riders received a four-

Sun rises over walk for well-being The combination of a beautiful sunrise and over 250 people smiling and wearing yellow, made Saturday’s Sunrise walk for Wellbeing a memorable event. Starting in the dark at 6am, a mass of locals walked around the 6km airport perimeter to promote well-being and raise awareness of mental illnesses. People of all ages and stages joined in, starting conversations about mental illness; some were doing it for themselves

and others did it for family and friends suffering through mental illness. Signs along the track suggested ways to help those affected, and the sunrise, live music, muesli and hot drinks greeted walkers as they finished the course. One of the event organisers, Pete de Jong, says they are very happy with how it went. “We couldn’t fault the morning, the weather played it’s part with a great sunrise.” For a video of the walk, visit nelsonlive.co.nz

Stoke senior to shave 65cm of hair

HEAD SHAVER: Jai Regan’s hair is 65cm long but soon it will all be gone as she prepares to shave it off for cancer. The big shave will be happening next week at the Stoke Community Centre with all money raised going to a cancer charity and the hair donated for wigs. Photo: Brittany Spencer.

Brittany Spencer Stoke’s Jai Regan is one spunky lady, she’s 68 years old and her crowning glory falls right down her back at 65cm long. Jai has been growing her hair for two years to get it this long and it’s a beautiful platinum blonde, but on October 18 it will all be gone. To the horror of some of her friends, and the admiration of others, her tresses will be soon shaved off - for cancer. The disease first touched Jai’s life when she was 12 and ever since she’s lost friends and family to cancer. She also had a section of skin removed in April after a large spot of melanoma flared up over summer. “I’ve had a lot of friends die from cancer, I went to a funeral just the other day, but there is some great research and new, effective treatments that need to be available for everyone. I’m doing this for all my friends who didn’t get that chance.” Jai says she’s been thinking about shaving her hair for cancer for a long time but didn’t tell anyone until a few months ago. “I was going to do it five years ago but got talked out of it, but this time round I have tremendous support from all of the Stoke Community Centre ladies and everyone is being very generous.” A hairdresser from Chillies Hair Studio will be doing the honours at 1pm on Tuesday, October 18, and Jai invites everyone to come down to the Stoke Community Centre, at the back of the Stoke Memorial Hall, and watch as her hair falls to the floor. “I know, on the day, some of the ladies will cry, but others are really excited and have said I needed to cut it shorter anyway. As for me, I’m just pleased to do it and I just want to raise some money to help all these poor people who are fighting cancer.” After being shaved off, Jai’s hair is going down to Freedom Wigs in Dunedin to be made into wigs for children who have lost their hair to cancer. If you would like to donate to Jai’s Shave for a Cure, give her a call on 548 1718.

Fantastic News for Nelson to have a strong and effective leader back in the mayoral chair. Scott Miller. Woohoo, congratulations Rachel, all the best for the next three year. Jeff Mills. God people, get over it. The people have spoken and over twice as many want Rachel, so you are in the minority. Stop kicking the s&^% out of our elected people and support what we have. Not everyone is ideal but god help us if we all thought the same. Live The Day!! Troy Dando. So now is the opportunity to get Hone sorted - fast!! Should have happened ages ago - don't wait any longer. Tracy Henderson. I backed Rainey but I think the polls reflect support for the Southern Link which Reece was very open about supporting. I didn't vote for you and so now we will have another three years of nothing being done. Noeline Riordan. Another protest over Lewis Stanton: Do these idiots want the council to spend another 50k taking Lewis to court and losing like they have in the past? Real good use of ratepayers money - not!!! Wayne Nicholson. It's time the council got something done about this issue, if not, the matter needs to be taken care of by other means! They've had plenty of time to resolve it,and I have a feeling things are going to end very badly for Lewis Stanton, unless they step up and sort it! Robert Webber. Can't take him to court if he isn't breaking any laws. But the council did promise to do something about freedom camping. It wouldn't be hard to incorporate this scenario into those by- laws, and then use them to shift him. Claire Kelly. Fantastic protest. If he's allowed to get away with this then everyone else can, too. Someone needs a horse and cart to add to it, seeing that you can get away with that too! Natalie Hunter. What is wrong with NCC, a by-law is needed - no loitering or littering or sleeping in the CBD. Junelle Boyd. To have your say on any local issue email editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Nelson Pine Industries backs local bowls Simon Bloomberg Bowls Nelson received a significant vote of confidence last Tuesday when it was announced that it will be sponsored by Nelson Pine Industries for the next three years. The announcement completed a big week for Bowls Nelson after five of its players were named in the 10-player team for the world championships in Christchurch from November 29 to December 11. Although the sport is already in top shape in Nelson, national coach Dave Edwards says the Nelson Pine Industries sponsorship will "help the Nelson production line going". "It's a major boost for the sport here," Dave says. "Nelson Pine is a great sponsor of sport in Nelson and Bowls Nelson is fortunate to have them on board."

Nelson Pine Industries managing director Murray Sturgeon says they are pleased to be supporting a sport that has such high levels of participation and achievement in Nelson. He says sponsoring Bowls Nelson will ensure that their support will benefit all 13 bowling clubs and their players in the Nelson-Tasman region. "We have sponsored various clubs over the years but, on this occasion, we are sponsoring Bowls Nelson which covers all the clubs," Murray says. Bowls Nelson board member Errol Beattie says they are delighted to secure the "significant" sponsorship which will be used to fund the men's and women's representative teams. "Nelson Pine Industries is a very community-oriented business and are very heavily involved with sponsoring many sports and community

Errol says the funding will help the men's and women's teams maintain the momentum they have gained over the last five years. The teams have an outstanding record at national inter-centre level with the women winning in 2012 and 2014 and finishing second in 2013, 2015, 2016, and the men winning twice in the last five years. "For the size of our centre, that's a mighty achievement," Errol says. Award winner 'Are you picking up what I am putting down?' by Jen Bowmast and Josephine Cachemaille.

Labour Weekend 22-24 October

Two Nelson-based artists are celebrating double success after picking up two national art awards last month. Josephine Cachemaille of Nelson and Jen Bowmast of Motueka have won a Merit Award at the National Contemporary Art Awards and a Jury Award at the Wallace Art Awards for their collaboration, The Vanguard Project. The collaboration took place during a six week residency at the now defunct Salt Gallery on Vanguard St, during July. Both have been recent distance students of AUT’s post graduate art programme and paired up after being “curious” about seeing what they could achieve together. “We’ve always had a very close eye on each other’s work, and when the opportunity came up for us to take a residency we went ‘absolutely’ – the chance to work together in a big clean space was really unusual,” says Josephine, who holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Art and Design, and a Bachelor of Arts. The pair left their independent studios and established the working studio together using the surrounding light-indus-

the works,” she says. “People would come in with suggestions of what we could make – it was really natural, whatever happened just happened and it was very friendly and social. People were really receptive to it and adventurous themselves.” Josephine says that when it came to entering both awards, it was just a matter of displaying the artefacts that showed the evidence of the project. “Our ambition was just to be part of the awards, so to come away with a Jury Award and a Merit Award is amazing,” she says. “Just being a finalist for both was great – there were almost 400 entries for the Wallace Art Awards, and there are not that many opportunities like this for contemporary artists in New Zealand.” The Wallace Art Awards have been running for 25 years and are the longest surviving and largest annual art awards of their kind in New Zealand. The National Contemporary Art Awards are now in their 17th year. To check out more about Josephine and Jen’s collaboration, you can visit: http://thevanguardproject.co.nz/

specially over the heat of the summer. There has been a lot of growth n this class not only here in Nelson ut South Island wide. The high orsepower machines are big, not nly here but in Australia and the USA, so we expect to see some in-

ternational drivers here to compete alongside a multitude of top Kiwis. Sprintcars are 900hp of action and on a small dirt oval like ours there will be entertainment for young and old. We are fortunate to be hosting the 75th anniversary of the New Zealand Midget championship and the Milestone Homes Top of the South speedway is expecting some of the biggest names in Midget car racing to come together on the 27th and 28th of January to win what is the oldest championship in New Zealand speedway. Local hopes could rest with Nevil (The Bullet) Basalaj who has put a lot of effort into his car preparation in the off season and has been 3NZ once and 2NZ twice in his career so he will be dead keen to go one better on his home track. Another mainlander to watch will be Dave Kerr from Christchurch who has no less

than seven South Island titles to his name and a 3NZ just two seasons ago. It will take a mighty effort to beat some of big name North Island drivers however. The Three Quarter Midget class (or TQ’s as they are known) are the real growth class here in Nelson this season with over a half dozen new drivers and cars joining in on the action that should continue on from last season. This season the class gets to host the South Island championship on the 25th February. The last few years this championship has been dominated by the super smooth Jeremy Webb from Christchurch but with him buying a Midget it is unclear if he will contest this event. He is however keeping his TQ as well. There are many Nelsonian’s that could really push for this title including the little lady from Foxhill Alicia McLauchlan who has really impressed since

way is renowned for. The club are continuing two of last season’s popular new promotions being the two days of stockcar team’s racing action with the Nelson Automotive Solutions Stockcar Teams Brawl backed up by a revamped Vertex Super Cup on the same weekend. The club is working hard on securing at least two North Island teams to attend this meeting as we try to grow it into one of the premier stockcar teams deals in the South Island. After the success of the Hanmer Holiday Homes South Island Superstock series last season the Nelson Speedway Association has, this time around, bought two rounds. One on the 5th November and the other on the 11th of February. A few years back the Modified class was a big deal here in Nelson so we have invited that class back here to shift some Moutere clay on the 11th February as well as inviting the Modified Sprints here on the 7th January to show us how they do it in the dirt. All in all, another very busy and “ENTERTAINING” season lays ahead here at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway as we bring it to you the only way we know how and that’s “Doing It In The Dirt”. As we move to keep our drivers, members and spectators safe we have had some concerns with cars, trucks and trailers holding up traffic on Lansdowne Rd, so we have decided that from the start of the season all cars arriving at the track are to enter on the Lower Queen St entrance. This should ease traffic congestion on Lansdowne Rd which is an open road. Also, there will be no parking outside our boundaries as it restricts the flow of traffic as well. This will be strictly enforced by the Nelson Speedway Association as it has been identified as a major hazard by both the club, the local neighbours and the Tasman District Council. A traffic management plan will be put in place to assist with this and we thank you for your cooperation. Visit our website at www.nelsonspeedway.co.nz

Nelson City Medical Centre has recently shifted into new premises, just down stairs and across the car park from their previous residence above Price’s Pharmacy. A mixture of expansion and practicality, the new practice has seen owner Dr. Hamish Renwick Hilson come full circle after he initially commenced practice on the same site 28 years ago. Up until the relocation, Nelson City Medical Centre’s current premises were used by beauticians and a naturopath. The new arrangement has seen them switch, allowing the medical centre the space it needs to grow. “The access for our patients is also much better now,” says Dr Hilson. “Elderly folk, people in wheelchairs and mothers with toddlers and prams no longer have to contend with the stairs and the elevator.” The new centre has been split into three separate consulting rooms, their previous practice only having two, in order to accommodate Dr Hilson and two other doctors. The practice was originally established in the 1970s by Dr Leo Hannah. When Hamish purchased it, it was at 300 Hardy St in Burnham House, on the site of the current car park. Hamish moved the practice to 63 Collingwood St where he merged with the retiring Dr Duncan Harris’s practice, then in 1995 relocated to 363 Hardy St where the surgery was attached to a house, “enabling us to bring up our four young children.” Around 14 years ago the opportunity

was offered to them to move into the attractive rooms above the pharmacy. For the most of the last 28 years Dr Hilson has been working as a solo GP with a part time assistant, although as a Cornerstone Accredited Teaching Practice, his team has now expanded with a number of younger doctors,

Members of the Nelson City Medical Centre team include, from left, Nadine Hunter, Dr. Caroline Wright, Dr. Hamish Renwick Hilson, nurse Bobbie Hutton and Dr. Dinah Kohner. including Caroline Wright and Tom Davies who have been working in the practice as GP registrars. Tom is currently a GP Registrar in Motueka but will be returning to Nelson City Medical Centre from December to work four sessions a week. Caroline will also be working four sessions a week, while Dr. Dinah Kohner will be doing two sessions a week. “I will be working in the background consulting, supervising and providing oversight, because as an older doctor it’s part of my duty to provide education and supervision

for younger doctors as they come into general practice,” says Hamish. “It’s a two-way learning process though as I also learn from them the electronic and modern ways of doing things.” Dr Hilson says the practice has always been a small one and will continue to be so, even in their larger premises. “I think that all general practices in Nelson provide excellent care and we’ve always been small, being a solo practice. Although we are now a medical centre, we’re probably the smallest in town and we want to remain relatively small. We like that personal feel and we like patients to be able to see the doctor they want, whether male or female, older or younger.” The new practice has also seen a new logo that symbolises a number of things important to Hamish and the centre. “Our logo is made up from a Reuleaux Triangle, a shape formed at the intersection of three circles, a reminder of the importance of a balance of mind, body and spirit. The logo can look like both a heart and shield and I like to think that in the middle is a bright centre of hope,” says Hamish. “It’s got curved sides and at any point diameters are equal, so it represents the equality we aim for in health care. The three triangles nesting inside each other represent special relationships, continuity and care of family/whanau because we’ve often seen three, sometimes four, generations of families coming through the practice.”

Dr Hilson says Nelson City Medical Centre will continue to provide up-to-date, modern, medical care with old-fashioned values, so for more information about the centre, contact them today.

A virtual gastric band could be the solution to achieving your weight loss goals. Having trained with Sheila Granger, Lesley Evans is delighted to offer this face-to-face weight loss solution, right here in Nelson. The virtual gastric band works using hypnotherapy to retrain the mind into thinking the stomach is smaller in size. This in turn allows you to change how you think about food as your mind tells you that you are full after a reduced food intake. Because the therapy is not a diet, it doesn’t mean you have to miss out on your favourite foods, it is a natural way of changing your life permanently by using the power of the mind and learning techniques to manage how much food you eat. With clinics in Nelson and Ruby Bay, give Lesley a call today to start your weight loss journey. Lesley, with her 13 years’ experience in hypnotherapy, can also help you with stop smoking, stress, trauma, anxiety, grief and pain management, so you can live a more positive, healthy way of life. Josh Clarkson goes from injured to CD contracted cricket player Jacob Page Nelson all-rounder Josh Clarkson has turned being “pissed off ” at a stress fracture into something positive, and now has a Central Districts contract. Josh suffered a stress fracture in his back during a warm up game for the Under-19 Cricket World Cup and it forced him to play as a batsman only. “I was pretty pissed off, I was ready to try to contribute to the team with both bat and ball. “It affected me mentally, and my batting suffered because I just wasn’t right mentally.” The ACOB all-rounder has been based in Napier during the offseason to get the best medical care during his recovery and rehabilitation. He has also had to change his bowling action. “Changing my action was quite tough because it was the action I’d had for all of my cricket. “I got an ankle injury just

alongside Nelson regulars Marty Kain and Greg Hay was acknowledgement of his hard work. “It feels like the hard work has paid off. “It hasn’t been easy, but I’m very keen to make the most of the opportunity. On his return from injury he believes he will initially be best suited to Twenty20 and 50-over cricket.” Josh will be part of Nelson’s Chapple Cup team this weekend and, despite being just 19-years-old, he saw himself as someone who would take on a leadership role within the representative team. “It’s always fun to play for Nelson and I know they will be looking at me to perform strongly and help the team, and I think it’s time I started to take on more of a leadership role at that level.” Nelson made the final of the Central Districts regional competition last year and will be looking to go one better this season.

Tasman United ready for

Tasman United will begin its first ever national football league campaign later this month. Nelson Weekly sports editor Jacob Page spoke with those who made the team a reality.

Getting a national league franchise in the Top of the South was only the beginning for those behind the scenes at Tasman United. It’s been a six year journey of meetings and unparalleled youth success which has created a perfect storm to make Tasman United’s case for inclusion in this year’s national league too compelling to ignore. The Nelson-Marlborough Falcons youth team, who played their first season in 2013 with the backing of a private group headed by former Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio, were runners-up in its second year and won it the following year. Last season, Nelson College won the national secondary school crown on home soil, beating talent-identified New Zealand agegroup players and more highlyfancied schools along the way. Nelson Bays Football general manager Clive Beaumont says he first remembered talking to former Nelson Suburbs coach John Slotemaker about a national youth team in 2010.

“John came to me and said that our youth players needed more opportunities and a national youth team would be a way to give young players a pathway.” Clive says he was confident the province could sustain a youth team on “a tight budget”. While Nelson Bays Football’s bid for a stand-alone youth team lost to a rival private bid from former board member Aldo, the province got what it needed, a national presence at a youth level. Current Nelson College coach and Tasman United assistant, Davor Tavich, led the team to a mid-

table finish in its first year before an appearance in the decider the following year, Davor says the amount of young talent in the Nelson region helped make the Falcons' rise meteoric. “We had good structures and players with plenty of ability,” Davor says. “It was an exciting time to be involved." Davor stepped aside and Mark Johnston, an overage player the year before, became the coach. They would go one step better in 2015, winning the league. “We knew something special was happening with the start we had

that year of eight wins in a row and we wrapped up our conference with a couple of games to spare,” Mark Johnston says. Mark says all the while, the goal was to get a senior team. “That’s what we all wanted and certainly the success of the Falcons helped contribute to what happened last year." With New Zealand Football expanding the league, Nelson Bays Football put a bid in late last year for one of three new spots. Mark Johnston was one of two people who presented the 170 page document to New Zealand

Football. It had been established thanks to a 10-person working panel with the likes of Clive, Mark Johnston and Tasman United chairman Mark Sheehan all involved. “You wouldn’t believe the work that went into that proposal,” Clive says. Everything from financial strategies, sponsorship player recruitment, coaching staff, succession plans, venues, training facilities and even the club colours and uniform, were discussed. Mark Johnston says he always felt confident. “I thought we presented really well,” he says. “We were very thorough and New Zealand Football didn’t ask too many questions because it was all in the proposal. I was 80-90 per cent confident.” Clive was less sure, the enormity of the outcome was not lost on him. “If we were successful, that’s great, but what would have happened if we weren’t? We would have totally been left out in the wilderness for two years." In December last year, the news came through that the bid was successful. Clive got a phone call in his office from New Zealand Football, he then passed it on to Mark Johnston, who was at work, while Mark Sheehan heard the news on the radio and Davor was told the news while in transit in Italy on

his way to Croatia. “We got a bottle of champagne and toasted the moment in Italy," Davor says. After a brief celebration, the hard work began once again, with sponsors, player recruitment and coaching teams all sourced. Mark Sheehan says, with a two year licence, Tasman United has a chance to cement themselves as a long term fixture in the national league. While goals for the debut sea-

son are realistic - win half the home games, finish as the best debuting franchise and above one of the regular teams - the aspirations years down the track are far greater. Mark Johnston would like to see a home-grown All White in the next five years. With entry to home games at Trafalgar Park free, it’s hoped Nelson will have the biggest home crowds of any franchise. Now, with the hard work done

behind the scenes, it's up to the players on the pitch to deliver. Tasman United will play its first game away to Canterbury United on October 23. The team's first home game will be against Hawkes Bay United on Sunday, November 13, at Trafalgar Park with kick off at 2pm. It will be a day that will swell the chest of many football fans in Nelson -- finally the region is back with the big boys.

Early season snapper fishing in Tasman Bay has still been very patchy, with changeable spring weather restricting the number of days suitable for getting out and wetting a line in the last couple of weeks. A couple of nice snapper have been landed recently by Dawnbreakers Fishing Club members near Pepin Island and Hori Bay, although larger snapper seem to have been taken by setlines. Good catches of gurnard continue to be reported from Delaware and Okiwi Bays, and good numbers of kahawai have also been a welcome by-catch in these areas. Several large brown trout have been landed in the lower reaches of the Motueka River in the last two
