Nelson Weekly staff reporters Unrest over Lewis Stanton’s ongoing Trafalgar St protest is heating up. Last week Nelson Weekly reported that city retailers were hanging clothes outside their stores to as a counter protest to Lewis, who now hangs his washing up at his protest spot outside Nelson Farmers. On Sunday two local women decided to join the retailers, by setting up their own protest near where Lewis, who likes to be known as Hone Ma Heke, sits. Pat Craig and Margaret Bowler set up chairs, their own washing line and cardboard signs, similar to those that Lewis displays. Like the retailers, they say they’re angry with Nelson City Council and police for allowing Lewis’ long-standing protest to continue. “We think it looks disgusting with the washing hanging outside Farmers, well, anywhere along the main street, so while Hone might think we’re supporting him,

What a rescue! Coastguard pulls of daring yacht rescue When Nelson Coastguard member Haden McCrorie jumped onto a yacht, battered from two days at sea in “horrific weather”, it was the easy part of the rescue. The hard part was figuring out how to sail the yacht, and then getting it and its two exhausted crew into calm waters in the middle of the night five months ago.

Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz The nine-hour mission, involving most of the Nelson Coastguard crew, earned Haden the “Rescue Vessel Volunteer of the Year” award at the regional Coastguard

awards last month. The yacht, which started sailing from Wellington on route to Auckland, got into trouble when it hit Cook Strait in bad weather. A big wave meant the yacht took on water which destroyed its electrics, including its navigational equipment and motor.

They were eventually pushed near D’Urville Island and that is when the Nelson Coastguard got the call to help at about 6pm. Haden says plenty of planning took place before they took off, but finding the yacht was tough because of its damaged navigational equipment. A passing ship found it on its radar and pointed the Coastguard in the right direction. After some searching, they found the yacht getting battered by the sea and its two crew in a bad way, at around 9pm. “They weren’t confident hoisting the mainsail and there was very little we could do for them. We couldn’t tow them because the sea was too rough. They weren’t doing well so we devised a plan to board their yacht.” Haden, a skipper, was lucky to have another experienced skip-

for NCC election voting

Voter turnout in the local body elections could be the biggest in more than a decade. Halfway through the Nelson City Council election voting period, 26.39 per cent of votes have been returned, which is slightly higher than 2013, 2010 and 2007. Returned votes have consistently been a percentage point or two higher than the previous three elections. Hot button issues like the Southern Link could be behind the slight increase. The election ends on Saturday with candidates informed of the results that afternoon. Voting closes at 12 noon on Saturday.

tum in the yacht to turn it so the sails could get some wind. Finally, after six hours on board and ten nautical miles, Haden, guided by the Coastguard boat, made it into Okiwi Bay. “Once we got around the heads we could get a tow on and the guys had organised a mooring for them. When we got it tied up the guys were happy to stay the night there, so we left them to it. They were pretty grateful.” Haden praised the effort of the entire crew in the rescue and says his award is one that belongs to the whole team. He will head to Taupo in a fortnight where he is up for the national award of volunteer of the year. And he won’t be alone, the Nelson Coastguard won four awards at the regional awards, including for crew of the year and rescue of the year. For full details turn to page 16.

per on board to take over the Coastguard boat, otherwise he wouldn’t have been able to consider the rescue. But after some serious planning he prepared to board their boat. He stood on the edge of the Coastguard boat, waited for the perfect moment and launched himself onto the stricken yacht. Once there, he had to figure out where everything was on the yacht and how to sail it. The two crew refused to leave the cabin and – after two days without sleep – were in no condition to help. “They weren’t comfortable leaving the cockpit on the boat so I had to do it all myself, I was pretty much single handed. That’s the tricky part, all of a sudden you’ve got a short time to learn the boat, figure out where everything is and there was a bit of tidying up to do as well.” Haden had to get some momen-

If everybody would join in and we all did this, something would have to be done. We don’t agree with him at all, well, his washing anyway, I think that’s a step too far.” Pat says she had thought of the idea before the shops started hanging washing in their windows and thought if she didn’t “hurry up and get it done, it

would lose its momentum.” Pat and Margaret were knitting in between conversations with interested passers-by. Owner of Hogies Surf, John Hogan, was one of the first retailers to ‘hang out their washing’ in protest. He says he is now being caught up in red tape after a visit from a Nelson City Council representative who said his signage was non compliant. “He came in and said I can only have one sandwich board up and I had to remove the protest because it was advertising, but

it isn’t, I’ve even got that written on one of the cardboards signs. I don’t understand, Hone is allowed to protest, why can’t the retailers?” The Nelson City Council staff member who spoke with Hogan refused to comment and chief executive Clare Hadley was unavailable for comment. Last week, Stanton told the Weekly that he was glad to see other protests start up as he didn’t want to be there either. He called on the council to “find a solution,” but wouldn’t say what the solution could be.

Ideas are being sought from the community to freshen up the “Welcome to Nelson” sign near Atawhai, with a prize of $2500 up for grabs. Arts Council Nelson are inviting residents of all ages from across the region to create and submit their designs, which will replace the out-of-date ‘Nelson: Live the Day’ sign, which still features a parachuting Aldo Miccio and a pirate Ali Boswijk. Community Arts Manager Lloyd Harwood says the sign is often people’s first impression of Nelson, and they want a great new image that greets visitors to the city.

“In the past, Nelson City Council has gone to design companies, but we thought it would be great to open it up to the public and engage people,” he says. “We are a creative community, and you never know who’s going to come out of the woodwork.” Entries close on November 11, and from there they will be short-listed and judged by a panel of executive board members from Arts Council Nelson. Lloyd says they will be looking for clear, bold and bright designs that meet the competition criteria. He encourages people of all ages to enter, including children. “It’s a perfect thing for

schools or youth groups to get involved in, as well as the professional artists out there.” Entries must be hard copy, contain the words “Welcome to Nelson” and be in landscape format, measuring 240mm high x 328mm wide. Multiple entries can also be entered. Lloyd says they are hoping to have the entries on display for the public to view and the winning design will also be used by Nelson City Council for other promotional purposes. It is anticipated the new sign will be up before Christmas, ahead of the busy holiday period. New Suter Art Gallery impresses The third oldest art gallery in New Zealand has undergone a major transformation, locals finally seeing The Suter Art Gallery’s fresh, new look at the Sunday reopening. While planning and fundraising for the project started back in 2012, the construction itself began in February 2015 and has significantly changed the look and layout of the building. While the new facility has a much more modern design, it has been built around the Suter Memorial Gallery, which, instead of being rebuilt, has been refurbished. The gallery now features an art library, the refurbished memorial gallery, a beautiful foyer/communal space, a new education room for hands-on art activities, the refurbished performance theatre and an outdoor sculpture walk. The Nelson Suter Art Society also calls the centre home and within its walls they have their own gallery space and meeting room. The Suter Art Gallery also has the most up-to-date lighting available

and a brand new heating and ventilation system to properly care for the artworks. Hundreds of people attended the reopening and many were impressed with what the rebuild had achieved. “I think it’s lovely and airy, I like the way they’ve raised the ceilings to what presumably was original and I think the light is better for the paintings,” says Nelson’s Une Hilson. “It’s easy to move around, before it seemed to go from one room to another but this is much more open and I think it does the art justice.” “I’m just amazed they’ve managed to do so much with that amount of money, because it’s incredible,” says Beatrice Clover. “All the open spaces and glass windows looking out to the gardens, it’s much more than just an art gallery, it’s a community facility.”

Graeme O’Brien for Council Due to the amount of overspends/budget blowouts by NCC and the Mayor recently admitting there is at least a 56 million backlog of infrastructure projects to be done, I am calling for a complete opening of the books and independent investigation into what the real backlog is and how much it will cost the city. The investigation would include all contracts awarded in the past three years; all expenditures; release of all “public excluded” minutes unless there are genuine confidentiality reasons that still apply. This action of transparency would allow the newly elected council to start with their eyes open to the true state of affairs the city is in and future councils to be fully aware of their obligations to core infrastructure projects and the ratepayers of Nelson.

Figures from the Civil Aviation Authority show the 2014 law has had little effect on the number of reported incidents, with 2016 on track to have the most aircraft laser strikes since at least 2009. This year, there have been 108 reports of laser strikes, already more than last year’s total and second only to 2013’s 117 incidents. “If it continues to happen, you roll the dice and the chances of a very serious accident occurring is just a matter of time,” says New Zealand Airline Pilots Association president Tim Robinson. Flying Nun coming our way Locally Owned and Operated

Andrew Board

As a university student in the 1980s Grant Smithies, like many of his peers, fell in love with Kiwi bands like The Clean, The Chills, The Bats, The Verlaines and Straightjacket Fits. The common thread between them? They had grunt, they had no money, and they had Flying Nun Records. And this month Grant – a Nelson-based music reviewer and feature writer for the Sunday Star Times – will get to interview and play a gig with the man behind Flying Nun Records, Roger Shepherd. Grant and Roger will DJ a gig at Deville on October 21, where the music will be loud and exclusively Flying Nun. The following day, Grant will interview Roger on stage as part of the Readers and Writers section of the Nelson Arts Festival. He says he can’t wait to delve into the mind of the man who created a music subculture. “I’m interested in what made him decide to do it in the first place. He was just a kind of music-obsessed young dude and he got a job in a record store in Christchurch, so he saw how that whole industry worked and I think

there were all these young bands not getting any traction and he just started to work out how you might do it.” Flying Nun was founded by Roger in 1981. He toured the country listening to bands and then tried to figure out how to produce records for the ones he liked. The label rose to prominence after the success of The Clean’s first record, Telly Ho! As a music writer, Grant has interviewed most of the bands that made the Flying Nun label infamous in the 80s and says it’s a fascinating story. “I’ve always been quite inspired, not just for what their records sound like but the whole culture around them, and the sign of a kind of alternative movement through New Zealand in the 80s. These bands were touring at times like the Springbok, tour playing in little halls. I think it’s just a fantastic part of our history and the music still sounds shit-hot now. So I’m looking forward to playing it loud for people in Deville.” The early records produced by Flying Nun had a real DIY feel and Grant says even the art work for the records was done by the bands or by Chris Knox, who was also on the label. “It was a time when, if you wanted

Music expert Grant Smithies will be playing with, and then interviewing, Flying Nun Records founder Roger Shepherd, this month. Photo: Andrew Board. to make a record in New Zealand you had to save a heap of money, go to a professional studio and the studio still really cared about high-fidelity sound and removing all the distortion and having a glossy enough sound that the ra-

dio might play it. But it was also a time when radio was not interested in playing New Zealand music at all. So Flying Nun were one of those labels where bands would often record in someone’s house on a four-track that Chris

Knox owned, and they’d set it up and surround the drummer with mattresses so the sound didn’t leak too much and they had guitarist over there in the hallway. So they made these records with a good, appealing kind of rough sound full of character.” For Grant, The Clean are his favourite Flying Nun band, but he’s keen to hear how Roger found them at the start of their career. “It will be good to hold up a Clean record or a Chills record and say 'ok, tell me about making this. You went to see this band when they were pimply 17 year olds playing in the corner of some pub in Dunedin. What made you decide to put this out? What did you see in this band?' “With a record label you also get insight into a lot of eccentric characters. A lot of the people making that music had colourful lives, they are opinionated, interesting people, so working in a collective way with these dudes must have been quite something.” To buy tickets for the “I’m in love with these times” gig at Deville on October 21, visit Deville. To book tickets for the Roger Shepherd: A Flying Nun Experience on Saturday October 22 at the Granary from 3pm, visit ticketdirect.co.nz.

Pest proof fence is officially 'closed' Brittany Spencer After 14 years of planning, four years of fundraising and a “herculean effort”, the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary fence is finally complete, and last week Prime Minister John Key was in Nelson to officially open the sanctuary. Over 100 locals gathered around the sanctuary information centre as the trust’s patron and general manager gave speeches alongside the Prime Minster, Nelson mayor Rachel Reese and Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne. The speeches were followed by the unveiling of a plaque, John Key’s symbolic closing of the fence, the signing of the guest book and a mingling time in which all generations got the chance to converse with the Prime Minister.

We can get on with the fun part of the project, starting to restore the ecosystem. - Hudson Dodd.

“I came here back in 2008... and at the time I remember thinking that if you want to have big results and big outcomes you have to have big dreams - and that is ultimately what has happened here," he said. “You’ve had a local commu-

nity who had a great vision for what can happen here, has had the support of a lot of generous people in terms of money and time, and you’ve put together what is a world-class sanctuary.” Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust general manager, Hudson Dodd says he is beyond happy that the fence is completed. “We’ve actually got a 14.5km pestproof fence on the ground enclosing 7000ha, so we can get on with the fun part of the project, starting to restore the ecosystem and

bring back the vanished species that used to call these hills home.” The Prime Minister was greeted by around a dozen protestors at the entrance to the sanctuary, upset that poison will be used to clear the area inside the fence from pests. One of the protestors, dressed as dead bird, managed to sneak up the road and push through bushes to be close to the speakers, before lying down on the ground, completing her ‘dead bird’ protest.

Victory services to close

9

TUESDAY 4 October 2016

g n i r p S Super DEALS!

Kate Russell Manager of the Victory Community Centre, Kindra Douglas, is upset over the closure of two critical services at the centre – The Victory police base, and Plunket’s Parents as First Teachers programme. The Victory police base is one of 23 around the country that have been earmarked for permanent closure. The base is staffed by volunteers and has been located at the centre for two years after it moved from the Victory Square shops. The Parents as First Teachers programme, which offers free parent education and support, has also been shut down. "It’s a service that has been successfully running at the centre since it opened in 2007, and they have helped hundreds of families in Nelson,” says Kindra. She says the closures will place unnecessary strain and stress on not just the Victory community, but all Nelson families.

Big turn out for Home and Garden Show

Large crowds of locals swarmed Saxton Stadium last weekend for the Home & Garden Show. With 180 exhibitors, the show was open from Friday through to Sunday, selling everything from homes and new wood burners to food and window cleaners the Mike Pero Nelson Giants even made an appearance. Event organiser Josh Shanley says the Claudia Strang, left, paints a house with her grandma Peggy Lee and father Chris Strang show was a “huge success” and even at the Nelson Home & Garden Show over the weekend. Nelson Weekly is making it easier for community groups to promote their event in the paper and online. A new email address has been set up directly for the Community Event section in the paper and if you send a photo to go with it, we’ll load it on our news website nelsonlive.co.nz as well. This service is free for all not-for-profit community groups and charities, but space is limited and we may not be able to fit all notices in every week. For profit groups, notices can be promoted in the section at a very small cost. The former email address used for the section will be discontinued. Local news as it happens

It's a shame that these people seem to be able to go from rental property to rental property and yet careful tenants who have a pet really struggle to get anything! If I was a landlord, I know which I would prefer. In this case, the rental agency should be held to account for damage to any properties they let to these tenants when

they know their history. Tania Brunell. Prince Albert Shield puts smile on Thalia's face: What a beautiful smile she has. Stefanie Coulter. Great work. Community spirit winning, love it! Chris Williams. Editorial on why candidates shouldn't make promises on Southern Link: As a person who lives near the Railway Reserve, I would dearly love a decision done and dusted, which we thought happened in 2004 until our local MP reignited the whole issue again. It causes distress, it is hard to live here when we are a political football for the local election. In years living here, I have not once had a councillor who claims to be pro Link approach me about the issue. I have got pamphlets from both sides by the way and no candidate has called this time. We could have discussed many issues, instead, the candidates concentrated on the one issue to the virtual exclusion of anything else. Delia Morris-Zindel. We need to sort the roads out in Nelson and Richmond! They're a mess! Mike Roberts. Something needs to be done sooner than later as the population is only going to increase. Without a good connection between Nelson and Richmond, Nelson will simply die

Nelson Weekly Locally Owned and Operated

editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz facebook.com/nelsonweekly www.nelsonlive.co.nz as Richmond's population continues to grow. Jobs will move to Richmond closer to the larger population base as will shops, restaurants, etc. This should have been done years ago. Other hugely poor decisions have been; not building a replacement to the Trafalgar Centre at Saxton Field and not moving Trafalgar Park at the same time. Doing so would have allowed intensive housing in Nelson (apartments and terrace type housing). Nelson will die without forward looking councillors, this is only one of many issues which need strong leadership. Dave Trigg. Protest against the protestor: Nelson city is already looking dirty and colourless, no plants, the place just looks blah, and driving through today Hone had an array of washing out including a bra and old socks really brings the city down. If I was a tourist I'd drive straight through to Richmond. Stayc Marie. This is a good idea, but it gives Lewis Stanton more media coverage, that's more attention again, he thrives on that! Margaret Poels. So if Hone decided to change his protest method, would they follow suit? Not sure if fighting fire with fire is getting their message across in this case. Even they admit Hone might look on it as support for him. It's gonna confuse the heck out of tourists! Matt Hammond.

Humans weren’t born with wheels on their feet and for good reason. I also wasn’t born with a natural desire to wear hot pink short shorts and constantly fall over, but I was at the Nelson Roller Sports rink to give roller derby a go, regardless. I am on the shorter side of average, not your most coordinated or aggressive person and the last person you’d ever think to call a badass. Walking through the rink doors to find Nelson’s infamous Sirens of Smash training definitely reaffirmed all that. Going into this, I thought derby was for tough chicks with ripped fishnet tights, lots of mascara and a healthy dose of aggression they wanted to work off by smashing another team. Turns out they are actually geniuses because, somehow, defying all laws of physics on their tiny little wheels, they manage to whip round the track faster than Scott Dixon whilst also dodging, jumping, and bowling over the opposition. It was quite apparent that, from the word go, the Sirens of Smash were legends, while I was merely a muppet, and unfortunately for me, it’s all on video on nelsonlive. co.nz

I was so bad they wouldn’t let me anywhere near a bout, so instead I watched them attack the track from the sidelines, longing to be as badass and coordinated as they were. I didn’t even get a chance to put my toughness to the test and these girls are tough. Tiny artistic skater by day and Sirens of Smash jammer by night, Hayley ‘Bashful’ Nam told me she’d accidentally broken her teammates rib in a training session. While I wasn’t exactly putting my hand up for breaking my first bone, the competitor in me wanted to go out there and prove I could jam with the best of them. Much to my disappointment, my uncoordinated limbs let me down and I remain ‘fresh meat’, not yet worthy to jam with the Sirens. However, I did get to skate around the track with the team a few times, but much to their amusement it was at granny pace and they had to grab my elbows occasionally to stop me falling over. If you want a chance to see the Sirens of Smash in action, head to Tahunanui’s Nelson Roller Sports rink this Saturday, October 8 at 7pm, for their clash against the Hellmilton Roller Ghouls from Hamilton.

New kea enclosure for Natureland Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Natureland is set to get a new kea enclosure by the end of the year, thanks to the help of some local businesses. Construction of the 16 metre long walk-through enclosure will start this month, and it will be the biggest project Natureland has undertaken since Trustees Meg and Mike Rutledge came on board almost three years ago. Meg says the purpose of the project is to showcase the biodiversity of the Nelson Region, and the zoo is already home to two male kea – Bruce and Jake - who will eventually be joined by some new cheeky friends, with the new enclosure being able to hold five or six birds. “Kea are the only alpine parrot in the world, and they are notorious for coming into contact with hu-

Coastguard wins best unit award Andrew Board Nelson’s Volunteer Coastguard has beaten eight other units to clean up at the regional awards, winning best unit, best rescue, best volunteer and best community relations. The unit won four of the six awards on offer at the Central Coastguard Awards last month and will now head to the national awards in Taupo later this month, where they are entered in each of the categories they won at regionals. New president Wayne Harrison says the awards are a great honour and show just how well the unit works as a team. “We all support each other and have a great spirit, so it does mean a lot to us to earn these awards.” Nelson won Unit of the Year for its combination of how they apply the training and incident

management. Its Community Relations award was for engaging with the community, including helping during the Tasman Bay Snapper Classic and the Boulder Bank walks that are hosted by the Nelson North Lions Club. Rescue Vessel Volunteer of the Year went to Haden McCorie for a rescue off D’Urville Island, which features on this week's front page of the Weekly. Rescue of the Year was for pulling a waka-ama paddler out of the water off the Boulder Bank last autumn. Wayne says the rescue started after police received a call saying a waka-ama boat was found at the beach on the Blind Channel with radio equipment on board. “The reason we got the award was more to do with how the whole system worked,

“She’s never short of company.” Jeanette and her family were so pleased when they discovered Summerset serviced apartments.

“I KNOW MUM’S SAFE, COSY AND CONTENT.”

After looking at options, a serviced apartment meant that Dorrie could continue to live independently, with help at hand. There’s always people close by and Dorrie is enjoying the new friendships she has formed at Summerset. “The other residents and staff are wonderful” says Dorrie. Knowing Dorrie is in a safe community environment gives Jeanette great peace of mind.

we had the police, a guy up on the cliffs doing the spotting for us. He actually said he spotted something and directed us towards the guy in the water. All he had was a wetsuit and a lifejacket and he did say that it was actually the first time he’d worn a lifejacket. He was in the water for an hour and a half, so the lifejacket saved his life.” From when the rescue boat was launched until the man was plucked from the water was nine minutes. “He started off in Blind Channel and we picked him up on the other side of the Boulder Bank, near the light house. He’d been in the water for an hour and a half and he had boats go past him, but he wasn’t able to get their attention.” Eight volunteers from the unit will head to the national awards in Taupo on October 15.

BP Opens Wild Bean

Store Manager Aleisha Brickell and Kyleigh Hazelwood are all pumped up and ready to welcome customers to the new BP Connect on Haven Road.

BP Connect opened its doors on Haven Road last week, marking the third Wild Bean Cafe to open in the Top of the South this year. BP Head of Retail Debi Boffa says BP is committed to the region and excited to open another fantastic new store in the area. “In the past six months we’ve opened three new stores; one in Blenheim, one in Richmond and one right here in Nelson,” she says. Boffa says BP has generated roughly 50 part-time and full-time positions across its three new stores. “While there are new employment opportunities as a result of our expanded operations, it’s fantastic to have seen so many familiar faces transition across from the previous stores as well,” she says. The new 24-hour operation on Haven Road has wide lanes for easy access, ample parking, a carwash and four fuels across every pump; Unleaded 91, Premium 95,

Ultimate 98 and Diesel. BP Connect Haven Road customers will also benefit from BP Ultimate 98 with ACTIVE Technology – recently launched after five years of research and testing. But according to Boffa, it’s not just BP’s quality fuel that sets them apart from the rest, noting that the Haven Road store will also accept New Zealand’s first-ever payin-car technology. “BPMe is our brand new App that was designed to simplify and accelerate the refuelling process. “It’s really fun to use and it’s almost too easy,” she says. “The pay-in-car feature is only available to BP Fuelcard customers at the moment, but our other customers can still download BPMe and scan it at Wild Bean Cafe for coffee loyalty benefits until the personal payment features are ready later in the year.” With a Wild Bean Cafe offering comfortable seating, free WIFI, free

Cafe on Haven Road newspapers to read while you are waiting and free coffee grinds to take home and use in your garden, Boffa says BP aims to provide a better experience for customers, “no matter what they’re looking for”. Boffa says Wild Bean Cafe is also the number one retailer of barista-made coffee in New Zealand and has been serving Fairtrade Certified coffee since 2008. The new BP Connect store will be added to the company’s national carwash program that recycled more than 70 million litres of carwash water in the past 12 months alone – an initiative that other retailers are yet to implement to this level or scale. BP has also invested in bright energy efficient LED lighting to reduce the site’s power consumption and has installed heat pump technology that allows exhaust heat from air conditioning and refrigeration plants to be recycled and used to heat the building’s water, delivering a more sustainable solution. “But our commitment to the Nelson

community doesn’t just stop at our stores – it was fantastic to award Nelson Surf Life Saving Club with a brand new BP IRB this year,” Boffa says. Nelson Surf Life Saving Club President Marcus Gardner says he is extremely grateful for the new BP IRB because their old one had been “pushed to its limit”. “We are involved in a lot of call-outs around the Nelson-Tasman region so IRBs really are an essential part of our lifesaving armoury. “It really means a lot; not only to the club, but to the entire community,” he says. Boffa says 2017 will see BP enter its 49th year as a partner of Surf Life Saving New Zealand. “We believe this to be the longest unbroken corporate partnership in NZ history which is something we are really proud of and we’re happy to be able to extend the benefits of our partnership into Nelson,” she says.

Wild Bean Cafe team members Lana Steevens and Summah Marfell will offer much more than just quality barista-made coffee – they’ve got a sumptuous range of quality food on the menu too.

Funding, fuel and coffee for boating safety Simon Bloomberg Free coffee and discounted fuel will be added incentives for boaties and stand-up paddle boarders to make sure they are safe on the water this summer. Nelson city and Tasman district council harbourmasters have received $30,000 from Maritime New Zealand for the next three years, and have teamed up with NPD to promote a boating safety programme, Fuel for Safety. The campaign is aimed at running a series of safety promotions on boat ramps around the region and will start at Labour Weekend. Nelson City Council deputy harbourmaster Josh Hanrahan says Fuel for Safety focuses on education at boat ramps where they will be running through a check list of safety equipment that needs to be on the boats. Recreational boaties with the right safety equipment onboard will receive an NPD voucher for discounted fuel, as well as giveaways. Josh says they ran Fuel for Safety at the Akersten St boat ramp for the first time last year and it proved successful. He

says, this year Coastguard Nelson volunteers will be helping out at the weekends to “add some real weight” to the campaign. “We spoke to people aboard 250 boats as part of last year’s campaign and it went very well,” Josh says. Josh says they will also be repeating a water safety campaign for paddle craft to cater for the “huge upsurge” in numbers of stand-up paddle boarders. Stand-up paddlers will be offered a free coffee voucher sponsored by Kitesurf Nelson’s cafe as a reward for wearing life jackets and leg-leashes. Tasman and Nelson harbourmasters have additional funding from Maritime New Zealand to participate in their nationwide enforcement campaign No Excuses. The programme requires councils to conduct on-water enforcement for up to five days, where a “no excuses” approach will be taken to breaches of key safety regulations including wearing and carriage of lifejackets and boat speed. The boating safety campaign will be launched nationwide during Safer Boating Week from October 14 to 21.

There has been a great deal of coverage in the recent media concerning Methamphetamine (P) and while it may seem like this is a new problem for New Zealand, its manufacture and use has been a significant problem over the past 15 years. Most of us never have any interaction with drugs in our lives and consequently may see the Meth (p) problem as “something that doesn’t affect us”. Unfortunately this is not so. Both manufacturing Meth and heavy smoking of P can leave a potentially harmful residue in a property. MethScreen provides a professional and discreet Meth residue screening service to help ensure you have peace of mind over your home or property purchase. MethScreen dedicates a great deal of time delivering free presentations to various property professionals and anyone else who is interested in learning more about the problem which is present here in the Nelson region. Having been involved in the industry for the last four years as an independent Meth screening company, MethScreen works with many of the region's property management and real estate companies who trust the service it provides. Anyone purchasing a property should consider a check for Methamphetamine contamination, so give MethScreen a call today. Looking to purchase your first home? Investment Property? Want to do a few renovations? Come have a chat, I may be able to save you thousands!!

Why should you get a pre purchase inspection? To make an informed decision on your biggest asset purchase. Your lending institute or insurance company may require a building report before finance can be approved. A good report should identify building materials, risk features, hazardous materials, moisture problems, rot and borer, structural defects and maintenance issues. Knowing this can help you budget for maintenance and may affect your final offer. Who can do a property inspection? Anyone can, but the current Sales and Purchase Agreement document requires a ‘suitably qualified building inspector’. An inspector must have the right tools and knowledge of the construction industry in New Zealand. ASAP Building Inspections Ltd has 16 years inspection experience and many years’ experience in the building industry, follows the New Zealand Standard NZS 4306:2005 for residential property inspection and has the correct tools for the job. Health and safety legislation no longer allows inspectors onto a roof or up a ladder unless a harness or scaffold is used. We utilise our drone to inspect and photograph this area. We have a proven reputation for providing quality, easy to understand reports and we carry appropriate professional indemnity insurance. If you’re looking to sell your home, auctioning it may be the perfect solution. Summit Real Estate’s sales and marketing consultant, Sue Gibbons, is the ‘Auction Queen’, and is confident she can achieve a great result for vendors through this sales option. It is now becoming increasingly difficult to price property, due to the worry of underselling it and this is why Sue has embraced the auction process. She has already achieved some extraordinary results for her vendors thanks to the transparency of an auction, allowing all interested parties to do their due diligence and put their hand up to make an offer. Currently her average is over $100,000 above rateable for properties via the auction method. There is a lot of background work that goes in to ensure the auction will be a success, along with the efforts of the auctioneer on the day. Sue is very grateful to be working with her experienced sales manager and auctioneer, Ben Nalder, to achieve the best possible result for those looking to sell their homes. Backed up by the Summit Real Estate team, Sue Gibbons is a wise choice when it comes to selling your home and property. Take advantage of Sue’s expertise and contact her today to discuss the benefits of auctioning your asset. Glasgow Harley has provided lawyers to the Nelson region since 1858. More Than a Car Park

Immigrating to New Zealand at 46 with his wife and six daughters in 1855, Edmund Buxton, an “independent gentleman”, began to influence the settlement. Involved in many commercial enterprises from horticulture,

home-ware stores to insurance, his name extends beyond the well-known car park. It was he, who built and developed two of the areas enduring estates of historic significance, ‘Broadgreen’ in Stoke and ‘Holton’ in Ruby Bay.

This year’s Nelson Arts Festival will be a memorable occasion for one local family, who are representing three generations in the community sing-along, ‘Sing It To My Face.” Harriet Whinney, Emily Whinney and Enda Doherty have all signed up to be part of the community conversation in song, which is on at the Nelson Musical Theatre the 19th and 20th of October. Sing It To My Face is an intergenerational music theatre project featuring local volunteer singers where three choirs of different ages (under 30, 3060 and over 60) express how they really feel about society in a stylised, theatrical performance of a fully-scored choral arrangement. One of the show’s coordinators, Bridget Sanders, says they start their intensive, but fun, rehearsals next Thursday, but they are still looking for some more under 30-year-olds to take part. “We’ve got a great load of people, but we need a few more under 30’s to balance it out a bit. We’ve got quite a strong children’s choir of about 10

John Haddock’s 25 year wait to get his hands on the trophy his family donated to the Stoke Bowling Club was well worth the wait. John, along with his team mates Mike Carter and Murray Dill, comprehensively won the Haddock Trophy triples, the season opening event, on Saturday. The trio was the only team to win all four of their games and they did so in comprehensive fashion. It was the second time John had won the trophy, after he previously won it in 1992. “The Cup was donated back in 1987, and after winning it in 1992 I’ve been playing for it most years since, but it’s a tough trophy to win.” The trophy was donated by John’s father, Geoff, a past president of the club. “Dad got cancer later that year but he wanted to donate a trophy for a tournament at the start

Stoke-Nayland favourites Jacob Page With the new senior cricket season starting this weekend, all eyes will be on who can lift their game and take home the three premier competition trophies this season. The Twenty20 and 50-over competition has been joined by a new 110-over competition which replaces two-day cricket. In the first round of 110-over games Stoke-Nayland host Wakatu at Marsden Rec, Waimea Toi Toi welcome Wanderers to Lower Ngawhatu and ACOB travel to the same venue to face Nelson College. Wakatu: Wakatu coach Richard Percy is keen for his team to show they are capable of winning at least one piece of silverware this season. Richard arrived at the club midway through last season and observed areas the team needed to improve to go from being a middle-of-the-road team last season to contenders this season. Veteran Laurie Kirdy has been given the captaincy as the team

Key batsmen Brad Smith, who averaged just over 40 last season,

and Matt Macquet, who averaged 44, both return, and Sussex cricketer Abidine Sakande will be the overseas professional. The 22-year-old right arm medium fast bowler has five first class games under his belt and a stint with the England Under-19s. Waimea Toi Toi: Waimea Toi Toi have lost their two spin options but otherwise have a very settled look about them this season.

Captain Jon Routhan says they are likely to have the same core of guys each week which means they will rely less on second grade players and university students. The team has lost Dan Wightman and Sam Field but have retained last year’s top batsman Mason Thelin, bowler Amit Dhiman and most improved player Matt Garguilo. They are unlikely to have the services of Central Districts

batsman Greg Hay as he looks to focus his efforts on the Stags. Jon, who will also play a key allround role, says his team is always there or thereabouts but would like to break their oneday final hoodoo. “We’ve been in the one day final five out of the last six years, but I don’t think we’ve won one for about four years. He said he expected the new 110-over competition, which replaces the two-day competition,

Stoke-Nayland: Stoke Nayland was the benchmark last year, claiming two of the three titles in a season of immense success in all three formats of the game. Captain Ryan Edwards is back for another year but his wicket-keeping brother Ricky won’t be. Ryan was named Nelson’s Cricketer of the Year at the

end of season awards last season, an event Stoke-Nayland dominated by winning seven team or individual awards. While they have lost the services of Marty King, Ryan says with Dylan Eginton and Brad Duncan, the seaming stocks are looking good. He says the team has minor and major goals for the season, but getting away to a good start in October

Athletic College Old Boys: ACOB player/coach Glen Baumfield says his team is looking for consistency They will look to have the services of Central Districts player Marty Kain, and one on the verge in Josh Clarkson. The new ball is likely to be shared between Liam Baird and Sunny Dhaliwal, with new faces Puneet Nanua and Shea Gillison. Ben Gully, James Graham and Greg Chitty are likely to form a fair bit of their batting depth. Nelson College: The schoolboys will once again juggle club cricket demands with their national secondary school competition commitments through December. The first XI is currently in Australia playing other school sides, while a Nelson College emerging team has also been taken over to get

valuable experience. Like any school team going up against men, it is often a case of mental application rather than skill set which determines success. Nelson College will have a steady diet of cricket prior to Christmas and with their Australian trip under their belt. Wanderers: Wanderers prevented Stoke-Nayland from a clean sweep of trophies last year with victory in the oneday competition. They dominated the 50-over format and qualified for the decider with a round to spare last season. In the middle order, young batsman Adam Leonard will aim to have another strong season. But it's the stalwarts like opening bat Dan Cooper and pace bowler Hayden Ingham who are senior leaders in the team and will again be important to Wanderers if they are to feature in finals this year.

Ben Hunt sets sights on 2017 Jacob Page

Nelson-born New Zealand rally driver Ben Hunt believes he can get more out of his Subaru next season. Photo: Geoff Ridder.

sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Nelson-born New Zealand rally driver Ben Hunt is making the most of time away from behind the steering wheel. The 2015 New Zealand Rally Champion completed the national championship season before a knee injury riding dirt bikes meant his offseason plans, behind the wheel of his Subaru WRX STI doing a lot of testing, had to be rethought. Instead, he's been watching his father Richard just complete Waitomo Rally on some of the old WRC roads. Ben remains positive that the car has plenty more to give next season, having a further two years on his deal with the 2016 HYDRAULINK Subaru. "It is hard to watch and be out from behind the wheel, but it's given me a chance to think and

look at things from a different perspective. "Hopefully I can make the most of the break." Ben, who has relocated to Auckland in the hopes of further chasing his rally ambitions, says while the team still runs on a budget, the financial pressure isn't as tight as the early days of his motorsport career.

Nelson's Ben Hunt in action during the season, trying to defend his national rally title. Photo: Scott Johnson.

"I'm fortunate to be in the position that I'm in," Ben says. "The past seven years have been very tough to get funding each season to run a professional campaign. But being in Auckland means I'm close to the sponsors and able to do more with them and get out and fulfill sponsorship commitments, which is a part of the sport I really do enjoy.

"Because without them I'd still be a guy on a farm in Nelson doing club events." Ben says, while a World Rally Championship drive is always the dream, the financial realities of trying to achieve it and follow in the footsteps of Geraldine's Hayden Paddon, make it tough going. "It's always something that I aim towards and yes, that's the ultimate goal, but funding is hard to get for Kiwis as we just don't have the resources and options to raise the money needed for a campaign like that." Ben says, in the offseason, he's keen to ensure he and his team get the most out of the car. "Next year, we want to come back stronger and I'm confident that there is still a lot more that we can get out of the car, so it's all very exciting. "We'll be working hard to get back to speed and hopefully winning rallies."

There was no off-season for Nelson builder Darryl Bridge. The production saloon driver has been busy down at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway during the winter months with hammer and saw in hand, in charge of the Nelson clubs maintenance programme. Darryl has spent many hours repairing and improving the track facilities, new storage sheds are on the agenda now the brand-new pit canopy is up, walls and fences have been shifted while general tidying around the track has happened. Last year at prize-giving, Darryl’s tireless efforts, including building the new toilet block, were rewarded with the Tony Coppell Memorial Trophy for Club Official of the Year. Darryl also had a successful production saloon season as well, winning the club championships,

overall season points in Nelson, and King of the Coast in Greymouth. Recently he purchased a Suzuki Swift, which has only done a handful of meetings and is a work in progress, but Darryl feels that it will modernise the aging production saloon class. His previous cars are all 1990s models while the Swift is a 2010, he still has last year’s Integra which will be piloted by Nicole Davey this year,. Darryl’s introduction to speedway was crewing for a mate who raced a street stock car. He then got talked into buying his first production saloon. After four seasons of racing, the challenge this year is to put some laps into the Swift and see what it can do, There are a few trips planned to the likes of Blenheim, Ellesmere, Ashburton, and to defend his King of the Coast title in Greymouth.
