Stanton ‘gone by next election’ Andrew Board and Kate Russell
Mayoral candidate Pete Rainey is promising to rid the city of Lewis Stanton’s daily protest - and the man himself is happy to hear it. Last week Rainey, a three term councillor who is standing against incumbent Rachel Reese, said he will find a solution to the protest if elected or he will resign before
the next election. “I support people’s right to protest, but Mr Stanton is infringing on the freedom of people to run their businesses or just to walk down the street, and that’s not right,” Rainey said. “If elected mayor, I promise to renew the city’s efforts to find a resolution. Ideally, I’d like it to be a compassionate one but if that proves impossible, I am prepared to play
hardball. This has gone on long enough I’d hope that we can resolve it a lot sooner, but if Lewis Stanton is still camping in Trafalgar Street by the next election, I’ll resign.” Lewis Stanton, also known as Hone Ma Heke, arrived in the 1990s with his horse and cart and has been in near constant disagreement with the council, mostly over parking fines. He racked up more
than $145,000 worth of parking fines for parking his horse and cart in the city and refusing to pay them. Stanton has always said that the council abused his human rights when it issued him with a blanket trespass notice in 2011, effectively banning him from 99.46 per cent of public land in Nelson.

At 10.21am today Liam will run in his favoured 200m final at the Rio Paralympics, with the 400m final scheduled for early Friday morning. On Saturday the Nelson blade runner produced the race of his life to earn
a silver medal in the 100m T44 sprint on Saturday afternoon (NZ time) - a performance the Kiwi admitted he produced on little sleep and over-flowing with emotion. Liam surged from sixth at the 50m mark to finish second in a time of 11.02 seconds. The 22-year-old former Nayland College pupil qualified second for the final in a time of 10.90 seconds, but only used the 100m

Liam was born with fibular hemimelia, in which part or all of the fibular bone is missing and who had both legs amputated below the knee at 18-months-old. In 2013 he took up running after New Zealanders helped to pay for his blades. He has been improving rapidly ever since. “Today was a super special day for me as it is my Mum’s birthday. She passed away four years ago and I know she would be so proud. My mates were in the stand and it is really special to have them here

to support me. “I was aiming for gold but Jonnie Peacock is fast and he raced a great race. I was pleased my acceleration kicked in toward the end, as it always does,” he added. Liam is coached by recently retired national 200m champion James Mortimer who was just as impressed with his sprinter’s effort. “Liam’s heat was really exciting, but his finish in the final was even more thrilling. He kept his cool after a poor start and just kept up the form and pressure to catch the others just before the line. “We’re looking forward to his other races coming up to see what he can do.”
Rainey promises action on Stanton FROM PAGE 1 The trespass order was later overturned and he has been arrested several times and served time in prison. Stanton used to carry all his possessions in his cart which was towed through town by his horse Barney and it was parked for hours in the street outside targeted shops. Barney was eventually taken off him by the SPCA after it was found it was suffering from heat stress and dehydration. Stanton says he was glad to hear of Pete’s promise. “At least Pete and one or two others are starting to talk about it. Council has failed to talk about it – that’s the problem.” Stanton says that he had a general conversation about it with Pete and has also spoken to other council candidates, including Mel Courtney. He wouldn’t say who he hopes gets in as mayor – “only the
people will say if Pete is worthy of the job.” “A solution needs to be found, but the council should have never started this.” “I think Pete is at least fronting up and putting his mouth where it is – there are others that aren’t. It is a tangled mess.” Rainey says that by allowing Stanton to continue to camp in Trafalgar St and spread his possessions down the footpath, Council is unintentionally enabling his antisocial behaviour. “I’d love to see Mr Stanton find something else to do with his life and if we can help him do that then that would be a great outcome,” he says. Comments on the nelsonlive.co.nz Facebook page were delighted with the promise, many saying they wanted to see him go, while others questioned why Rainey hadn’t tried harder to find a solution as a councillor.

Kate Russell Nelson residents got the opportunity to put their most pressing questions to Nelson City Council election candidates on Saturday. The Stoke Memorial Hall played host to “Quiz the Candidates”, which was organised by the Nelson Residents Association. All council and mayoral candidates showed up, apart from Cindy Batt. A handful of district health board candidates were also in attendance, too. Many Nelson voters came prepared with their lists of candidates and questions – which were spurred by posters around the hall stating ‘what’s your priority?’ with issues such as the Southern Link, rate increases, Modellers Pond and wood burners being highlighted. One Nelson resident, Paul Lunberg, came armed with a couple of questions for candidates: what would be their ideal size for Nelson and how would they maintain it, and what are candidate’s views on global warming. “I’ve got my list of councillors, and I’m here to find out the views of the ones I don’t know

First time council candidate hopeful, Kindra Douglas, said she also liked the face-to-face format. “It’s hard to get a sense of someone when they are standing up talking to a crowd. cent conversation,” she said. The event ran from 1 – 5pm and vice-chairman of the Nelson Residents Association, Kerry Neal, said the hall was fully occupied for the whole time. “The public clearly look forward to the event and obviously the candidates feel there is value in it too, and we thank them for coming” he says. Kerry said it is the fourteenth time the association has held the event, with the format being changed three years ago so that the public could talk oneone-one with candidates. Also being held tonight is ‘Meet the Council Candidates’ at Tahunanui School, 69 Muritai Street, from 7-9pm.

Best friends win smart phone competition BEST FRIENDS: Paris Eyles Clements and Ruby Stephens with the smart phone prize for the nelsonlive.co.nz best friends competition. Photo: Brittany Spencer. Insert: Paris and Ruby together as oneyear-olds.
Brittany Spencer Over the past two weeks, nelsonlive.co.nz has been running a competition to find Nelson’s best best friends. To win, entrants have to send a photo of themselves with their best friend and tell us what makes their friendship special. Born only a day apart, our first set of winners, Paris Eyles Clements and Ruby Stephens have been best friends since birth. With their mums in neighbouring rooms of the maternity ward, cousins Ruby and Paris spent many of their first days together, and 10 years later remain inseparable.
“When Ruby was born, Paris came into the birthing suite with Nerolie within half an hour of me having her,” says Ruby’s mum, Megan Stephens. Now, they build huts, share birthday parties, have lots of sleepovers, do girl guides and go on holiday to D’Urville Island together. Ruby says the pair wish they were twins. “We do everything together, whatever Paris is doing, I am too.” Paris says she remembers being best friends even as kids, “pretty much every memory we have has each other in it.” Ruby left for America on Mon-
day for a two week holiday, it’s the longest the two have ever been apart and their mums are expecting them to miss each other. Paris’ mum Nerolie helped the girls enter and says when she told the girls they had won they were so excited. “Straight away they were buzzing and talking about who should have the phone, Paris already has one so Ruby is going to have the phone, they’re both very excited.” Another Vodafone prize pack, including a smart phone, is up for grabs, so send your entries to reporter@nelsonlive.co.nz to be in to win.

False alarm raiser ‘I felt really silly’ Brittany Spencer We know to call police if we see a crime, fire service if there is a blaze, the ambulance if someone needs medical attention, but who do you call for an emergency on the water? That’s the scenario that faced Nelson woman Cass Esposito last Tuesday when she saw a kite floating in the water but no kite surfer, while driving along Rocks Rd. Pulling over, Cass watched for movement and after not locating the kite surfer for 10 minutes, she made the decision to act. But she had no idea who to call. “I was worried that maybe someone had come down and cracked their head or was in serious trouble. But I had no idea how to get help,” says Cass. “I Googled the Nelson Coast Guard and saw on their website that I had to call the police.” Cass called and around 20 minutes later, two police units, a helicopter, and an ambulance were on scene, trying to sight the person whose kite was

floating between Fifeshire Rock and the buoys. “When it’s on the water and you’re looking from the road or the beach, there are so many things that you just don’t know and won’t until someone is with the person,” says Cass. “I kept being asked if I thought the person needed medical attention, but I couldn’t even see him. As an observing member of the public you feel pretty stupid and helpless in that situation.” When the Harbourmaster’s boat was in sight the kitesurfer was sighted, they got up and continued to kite surf. “I felt really silly and said to
the policeman, ‘that was an expensive false alarm’, but he said I did the right thing and I figure it’s better to make a fool of yourself than read in the paper the next day that somebody had died.” After the incident, Cass says everyone needs to know who to call for help when there’s an incident on the water. Nelson Harbourmaster Dave Duncan says people shouldn’t hesitate to report dangerous situations on the water. “Call 111 straight away and ask for police, search and rescue operations should always be directed to police” says Dave. “Report the incident, stay in the same place, talk to police, keep a vigil eye and, if the person is okay, just ring 111 again and say it’s all good now.” Dave also says people who report things should not feel silly if the situation is not as it initially appears. “We all care and the cost is not a problem, we’d always sooner go than not, and if I was in trouble it’s nice to know people care and would ring.”
I’M STANDING FOR ACTION ON HOUSING Every child deserves to grow up in a warm dry home. Council can do more to help - and to assist older people to stay in their own homes. We need a Nelson Housing Strategy now.
Council can achieve more by reviewing spending priorities, while continuing to invest in vital stormwater, sewerage and supply infrastructure. Let’s get on with it!

The car, which was on the Motueka Valley Highway, was turning left onto Wakefield/Kohatu Highway when a medium-sized truck coming from behind collided with the vehicle, the impact causing the car to flip onto its roof. The two passengers were temporarily trapped until members of the public helped cut them out, neither suffered serious injuries.

A car flipped over near Kohatu. Children burnt in Nelson house fire: Four children were taken to hospital after being saved from a house fire on Friday night. Fire trucks were called to the Weka St home around 8pm after a kitchen fire spread to the rear of the house and into the roof. Neighbour Lillian Reynish told NZ Herald that, hearing her neighbours' screams, she ran outside and saw the fire. “Everybody was screaming. [The father] was beside himself, he was losing it.”

The Kahurangi predator control is the largest operation in DOC’s 2016 national Battle for our Birds programme, and is planned to cover approximately 295,000 hectares of the park and other

Parts of the Heaphy Track will be closed for half to a full day and will reopen after DOC staff have cleared baits from tracks. Road closures will occur on the Cobb Road, Wangapeka River Road and McCallums Mill Road during bait distribution in those areas of the park. Man arrested after high-speed car chase A high-speed car chase and the arrest of a “high risk warrant” followed some smart work by an offduty police officer in Richmond and cool driving by chasing police officers on Friday afternoon. Sergeant Greg Beer of the Nelson police says they had been on the hunt for 23-year-old Dylan Sutton for the last month after he “cut off his bracelet and fled his place of residence”. Police had warrants for his arrest, on charges including driving while disqualified and wilful damage. Police arrested Sutton at around 3.50pm on Friday after the car he was in was cut off by one of two police cars involved in a high speed chase from Richmond. The chase ended about three kilo-
metres south of Hope on State Highway 6. The car was slowing down and the police officer managed to get in front of him and cut him off. "I think he might have been running out of petrol,” Greg says. Greg says Sutton was spotted by the off-duty police officer on Talbot St after he recognised his car. The officer called the duty officer but Sutton saw the police and fled, and the pursuit followed. “Two police cars were involved in the chase. I don’t know how fast the car was going – it was fast enough, it was a high-speed chase. “We arrested him – he is a high risk warrant,” Greg says. “We also arrested a female and she’s assisting with our investigations.”

Every three weeks our 'Give it a Go Girl', reporter Brittany Spencer, will take on a local event or activity, photograph it, film it and write about it. Here is her first offering, snowboarding.
There is nothing worse than getting a dumping of snow down your pants. Combine that with my non-existent snowboarding prowess, multiple stanky leg dances to get the snow out of my pants and a healthy dose of public humiliation on the poma lift, and you’ve got the very first Give It A Go Girl segment. Because the snow season is coming to an end, we thought we’d sneak up to the Rainbow Ski Area and kick up some snow for the first Give It A Go Girl. Personally, I’m more of a beach kind of girl, I’ve got nothing against the frozen white fluffy stuff, but aside from being stuck in a blizzard when I was younger, I really haven’t had much experience in it. We arrived at Rainbow in time to catch the first

bus up to the top of the mountain. For those of you who ski or snowboard, being in a massive bus as it slides on icy roads is probably not a big deal, but let's just say my knuckles were white as I gripped the seat. When we got to the top, my focus changed. I saw snowboarders and skiers gliding effortlessly down endless silk blankets, carving tracks through the fresh powder. From the outside looking in, snowboarding epitomises ‘cool’, you stand there doing not much as you whizz down a slope. I couldn’t wait to do, be and look like that. What

could be easier? Going into this, everyone had said, "if you can wakeboard and surf, you’ll be fine". They were wrong. I walked out ready to absolutely slay the slope, turns out the slope had other plans. After a few seconds on the beginner field, my overlyconfident self decided to tackle the big one. But here’s the thing, to
snowboard down a slope, you actually .co.nzhave to get to the top of it. I’m sure I can’t be the only one [if I am, that’s incredibly sad] but I was defeated by one of the most straight forward things on the field, the poma lift. I tried, not once, not twice, but five times to use a poma, and each time I never got more than ten measly metres before losing my balance and falling sideways into the bank. Everyone was showing me up, grandparents, first timers, even preschoolers. Eventually I gave up, trudging through knee-
high snow up the side of the slope, feeling like a right muppet. I may have been puffing after what seemed like an Everest-sized climb of shame, but I was finally at the top and I was ready. My feet were strapped in, I even managed to stand up after a few attempts, shuffle to the edge and start sliding. I wish I had a good wipeout story for you, but the truth is my day consisted of sliding about two metres before pathetically falling on my butt. Eventually, I managed to do a ‘to cool to care’ run, however, I was barely moving and my puffer jacket underneath my snow jacket made me feel more like an overweight oompa loompa than a cool kid. Despite the wet pants, my utter lack of anything remotely close to skill and my bruised ego, I had fun laughing at myself. For anyone keen on giving snowboarding a go, I would definitely recommend getting a lesson… and some butt padding.

New initiative to help dog owners Simon Bloomberg
It's always heartbreaking when a homeless dog has to be put down and statistics show that it's often large bully, bully-cross or brindle breeds that are the innocent victims. That's why a Nelson couple have decided to do their bit to reduce the problem by offering to subsidise the cost of desexing those breeds in a two-month trial. Deb and Mike, who don't want their surname published, are trialling a limited offer to have 30 dogs desexed for $25 before the end of next month to help reduce the number
of unwanted puppies. "These large mixed breeds tend to have big litters, which often means there're too many puppies and dogs and not enough homes," Deb says. "These are the dogs that die in shelters every day across New Zealand because there are too many of them and they are usually the hardest to rehome." Deb and Mike have already helped save one bully-cross brindle dog from an unhappy end, adopting Jools after she spent four months in the Richmond pound waiting to be rehomed. Deb says Jools epitomises the problem because, although she is a loving, well-behaved dog, prospective
dog owners are often wary of bully breeds. "Jools is a lovely dog but no one would take her, so we did," Deb says. "It doesn't matter how nice they are, these breeds have a stigma attached to them and that makes them hard to rehome." Tasman district animal control officer John Bergman says Deb and Mike also make life a little happier for all the Richmond pound dogs when they take the dogs walking two or three times a week. "They already do a great job walking our dogs and now this subsidised desexing is a very good idea," John says. "I'd really like to see dog owners take up the offer - it could
help prevent the problem before it starts." Deb says the desexing will be carried out by Victory Vets in Nelson. She says the practice manger Brendan Hickman is "fully supportive" of the initiative and has given them a "fantastic rate" to help keep the costs down. As well as walking the pound dogs, John says Deb and Mike get a lot of them vaccinated, desexed and chipped. Anyone who owns a bully, bully-cross or brindle dog and wants to have them desexed can contact Deb on 022 080 3599 or go to the website toomanypuppies.co.nz and complete an application form.

news in brief
Extra funds for Stoke Community Centre approved: Nelson City Council has approved an additional $350,000 to enable the Stoke Community Centre at Greenmeadows to progress to the next stage. The motion to increase the budget passed 12 votes to one at Thursday’s full council meeting, with councillor Pete Rainey being the only one to oppose it. The project can now move to the next stage, which includes progressing with storm water improvements for the Greenmeadows area prior to construction of the new facility. Modellers get extra time to raise funds: The Nelson Society of Modellers has been given an additional six months to raise $590,000 towards fixing the Tahuna Modellers’ Pond. At a meeting on Thursday, Nelson City councillors unanimously agreed to give the society until February 2016 to raise the additional funds. The society requested the extra time to confirm funding as it won’t hear back from grant applications until later this year. The council will provide $600,000 towards the upgrade which will include concreting the bottom of the pond, removing contaminated material and installing subsurface drainage and aerators.

Dog to help autistic boy Locally Owned and Operated
Jessie Johnston
Every day, life for Anna and Shon Costello is ‘hard work’ as their son Blake, 4, has severe autism. However, the help of an assistance dog could make all the difference to the Richmond family. Blake’s severe form of autism means he is both non verbal and will run away if given the chance. Having no sense of danger means that when the family do go out, Blake has to be retrained in an oversized buggy to make sure he doesn’t run out on to the road. “He’s just so strong and he’ll just take off, people comment and judge that he’s too big for the buggy or he’s lazy, they don’t actually know us, they don’t know our background,” says Anna. “I think I ended up walking through the mall one day in tears because everyone was staring and judging, it just gets really old.” “A grandmother of a boy in our other son Logan’s class looked at me and laughed, and said “he’s too big for that buggy”, and I said “well, he’s non verbal autistic with no sense of danger, how the hell am I meant to keep him safe”, and she just said “well, get something bigger,” says Anna. The family applied for an assistance dog last year after Anna watched a video on Facebook. “I burst into tears because there was a boy with Down syndrome with his mum and his dog out at the grocery store and I could
From left, Anna, Logan, Blake and Shon Costello are hoping an assistance dog could help bring some normality to family life. Photo: Jessie Johnston. just see that making a huge difference in that family’s life,” says Anna. Assistance dogs are trained specifically for the people they will be matched with, including those suffering from diabetes or epilepsy. In Blake’s situation, both he and the dog would be harnessed together, while Anna or Shon have the dog on a lead. The dog will be trained to deal with Blake’s meltdowns and, should Blake try to run away, the dog will sit down and act as an anchor. Assistance dogs are bred, raised and
trained in Hamilton. They are put with foster families when they can leave their mother and once they turn one, start their six to eight months of vigorous training. The family had a trial with Assistance Dogs New Zealand dog Amber, which included a family walk around Washbourn Gardens, through Kmart and to McDonalds for an ice cream. It was the furthest Blake had walked before and Anna says normally it would never have happened. “If he doesn’t want to go with you he’ll just drop down and that’s it.”
“Usually in Kmart he’d try and shelter himself, put his head down, hands over his head and that sort of thing, but he was actually more aware of his surrounding with the dog and he was a lot more manageable,” says Shon. “It just gave us an insight into what a normal family life could be, because we don’t really tend to go out much or do a lot because it’s hard work,” says Anna. While the dog costs $48,000 to breed, raise and train, Anna and Shon have to contribute $20,000 of that. “Initially when I looked on the website I thought “this is awesome”, but then I thought shit, $20,000 is a lot of money, but I’m kind of prepared to do whatever it takes so that we can have a normal life and give Blake the freedom that he deserves,” says Anna. “During the trial he was just able to be a kid and have that freedom, he was able to walk around and touch things and observe things from different angles, instead of just being stuck in a buggy.” The family is still around 18 months away from receiving a dog, although a two year old dog has become available and the family’s fingers are crossed that they will be able to take it home. The family has set up a Give a Little page to help raise the necessary funds, so anyone who would like to help the Costello’s can donate at givealittle.co.nz/cause/anassistancezdogforblake, or visit their Facebook page to learn more about Blake.

The 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme will be commemorated at Founders Heritage Park this week. This Thursday 15 September marks the centenary of the World War One battle at Longueval, which is known as one of New Zealand’s ‘darkest days’ in military history in terms of loss of life. The battle was New Zealand's first major engagement on the Western Front and took a huge toll on the 15,000 members of the New Zealand Division who were involved. Roughly one in seven of the division who fought on the Somme was killed, and about four in every 10 were wounded. To pay our respects as a city, Founders will be commemo-

Hospital chaplain service racks up 7000 visits The Nelson Hospital Chaplaincy service provides support, comfort and encouragement to thousands of patients and their families, and even to hospital staff, each year and now it's their turn to ask for help. It's Hospital Chaplaincy Week next week and the Nelson Hospital Chaplaincy is holding a fundraising stall to help maintain the invaluable services provided by its dedicated volunteers. The Nelson Chaplaincy Service is a nondenominational organisation, there to offer a friendly ear to hospital patients, staff and visitors. Yvonne and her team of 18 volunteers visit people in wards and also run the hospital chapel, which is right beside the café. They continue to actively promote our theme of: Retain and Sustain our Healthcare Chaplaincy services. The aim is to retain and sustain this country’s 90 Hospital Chaplains and some 300 voluntary

She says coming from the Anglican cathedral to the multifaith Chaplain did take some adjustment, but the main reason for the job isn’t about faith, it’s about people. “I really care about people, regardless. I have up-skilled in other faiths but mainly it’s about people and listening to people, and being there for people no matter what their faith is.” Last year, Yvonne and her team made 6952 “meaningful” visits to

patients and assisted 1019 family members. She says there is plenty of joy in her job, with new parents and grandparents coming to the Chaplain to give thanks along with those who may have had surgery and are feeling much better. But there is heartache as well. "Sometimes it’s tough," she says. "Certainly there are times where I have to come back and collect myself, and there are times that
I’ve spent time in the chapel just having a few moments of quiet, that’s where I recharge again. Due to confidentially rules, Nelson Weekly couldn’t speak with any of the patients that the Chaplaincy has helped, but it did receive an anonymous comment from a patient through the chaplaincy. It read: “Thank you once again for all your support and the support of your team. I would not have been able to get through this admission if it wasn’t for you and your team. I really praise God for all of you. Thanks again, God bless you all.” The chaplaincy service is 50 per cent funded by the government, the rest is made up from donations. Yvonne says they get great support from the hospital itself and local churches, but they’re hoping to raise some more money from the community to cover a shortfall this year. Anyone who would like to contribute can do so by contacting the service’s fundraising coordinator, Annie Brown, on (03) 546 1818.

Chaplaincy Assistants. For two years, Yvonne McLean has been the chaplain at Nelson Hospital and in that time she’s spoken with thousands of people, dealing with heartbreak, joy or stress. But she says no matter the situation, she and her volunteers offer something often missing from a hospital – peace. She says some people want to talk, some don’t, while others are just happy to sit in silence while their hand is held. "We try to gauge what they’d like from us and some people don’t want to see us, but they’re always polite about it," she says. "Others want to get something off their chest and we’re there for that, too." Yvonne was a minister at Nelson Cathedral before she took up the job at the hospital. She says it was “God’s decision” and she has thoroughly enjoyed it. “He made it very clear that he wanted me here and it’s been very rewarding, very fulfilling. It has its tough times, but it’s a privilege to be with people during tough times and happy times, too.”

After taking to the salt flats for just their second year, the team behind Project '64 returned home from the Bonneville Speed Week in Utah having broken two land speed records. The team of eight was founded by Garry Orton and Guy Griffith who own and operate Victory Automotive, a local automotive business based at the World of Wearable Art and Classic Car Museum. The pair have a long history in motor racing with Bonneville Speed Week being one of many events on their bucket list. Having been in the industry for years, they knew all the right people who could help bring the project to life, including Bryan and Nelson Hartley of Hartley Engines and Motorsport in Palmerston North who designed and built the engines. Larry Mulholland from Swift Automotive in Christchurch was the man behind the gear box and Gary Grant from AllTrax was called in to do the body rebuild and roll cage construction. Starting in 2010, Project 64 took the shape of a 1964 Mini Cooper S that was well beyond repair. It’s now a proven speed machine, first taking to the Salt Flats in 2012 where it broke one land speed record. The team was racing in the I/ BGCC category, and for those who don’t know what that means, I stands for an engine size under 1000cc, B means it is either turbo or super-charged, G means it runs on petrol and CC stands for competition coupe. Bonneville Speed Week encompasses a huge number of categories, including small engine vehicles like the Project '64 Mini, all the way through to fully customised vehicles in the streamliner class. A steep learning curve led to the team damaging both their motors during
their attempt in 2012, and having to build a third motor from what was left before claiming the I/BGCC land speed record. The team that had set the previous record was the Hudson Boys, regarded as the kings of small engine racing at Bonneville, who had around 50 records at one point. “They’re a really nice bunch of people, which is another great thing about Bonneville,” says Project 64 member, Mike Wilson. “When they found out in 2012 that we’d broken their record, they were super happy for us.” They even helped the Project 64 team out this year, suggesting a

has run since 1949, it’s been over 100 years since the first record was set on the salt flats. The 2014 cancellation ended up being a blessing in disguise, allowing a new company to come on board whose “crank shaft design was amazing and really helped with the engine rebuild,”

In 2013, Project '64 had decided not to attend the event, then in 2014, having planned to return to break some new records, they were forced to cancel after problems with the construction of their crank shaft. A few weeks later, Bonneville itself was cancelled due to heavy rain. The weather was so bad from then on that by 2015 the quality of the salt hadn’t recovered and it was thought for a time that it might never run again. While Bonneville Speed Week
says Mike. “These new engines went from 284hp on petrol to 330hp (370hp on methanol), which is a massive jump on a motor that would originally have had about 60hp.” This year, their first record was set during tuning runs in the I/BGALT class, where the mini smashed the 133.896mph (215.485kph) record with a speed of 144.033mph (231.799kph). After switching classes to I/BFALT, a change from petrol to methanol, the team ended up getting the record in this category too, with a speed of 156.006mph

(251.067kph). It was in the I/ BFCC class that the little Mini once again blitzed the qualifying run, reaching an incredible 166.046mph (267.225kph), but after a week of racing, a part failure on the second run meant the car lost oil pressure and only reached 144mph before having to pull off the track. While they didn't achieve the world land speed record for that particular class, Mike says the team is extremely proud of what it achieved, which was still recorded as an official top speed. "These guys are very good at what they do and everyone did their job and did it well," says Mike, on how the team achieved their speed records. "They're very sharp people, they've been doing this stuff for years, although part of it was that people told us it was a stupid idea to do this sort of thing in an old Mini. We were asking a

Their success has also got them some international recognition, including an invitation to appear on Jay Lenos Garage, a web show run by the American comedian. The show started off focusing on his personal collection, featuring over 100 cars, and now includes segments with guests and their cars. His subscription base numbers $1.7million and, after filming the piece earlier this month, Mike says the video was released on Monday, California time. While the skill and determination of those in the Project 64 team are certainly a major part of their success at Bonneville Speed Week, they wouldn't have made it without the support of a number of generous sponsors, and so the team wishes to thank all of those who were involved behind the scenes. Project 64 is looking to return to Bonneville Speed Week in the future and is currently in the position of talking with people interested in their project. “It’s a bit up in the air, we would love to go back,” says Mike. “We are hatching plans and talking to someone about it, but we can’t really say a lot. It’s along the same sort of lines in that it would be an iconic vehicle.”

'Magical' Kellys Bush opens to public for a day Kate Russell A “magical” piece of bush tucked behind Nelson city will be open to the public this weekend as part of conservation week. Kellys Bush is an area of 5.7 hectares at Enner Glynn, and a 30 year bush restoration project there earned owner Lindy Kelly and her family recognition at the Eelco Boswijk awards last month. The bush encompasses a rare 2.5 hectare piece of original lowland forest, which has been described by Nelson City Council as an ‘area of special significance’ and ‘locally uncommon’, due to its proximity to Nelson City and its richness in Tawa and Maitai. It is home to trees from preEuropean times, native birds, rare and endangered species of fungi, giant native earthworms and the giant carnivorous snail, powelliphanta. A successful open day last November attracted over 200 people, and Lindy wants to hold another open day since they can’t open the bush to the public all the time. Many schools, kindergartens and community groups have been involved with the restoration work over the years, which

She says that walking trails, picnic areas, bridges and a shade house for school children to grow native trees, all help to make the forest ‘place of active learning.’ "We love having school and kindergarten groups up here and they are always welcome to arrange visits. We want to make it a place of recreation and education – it’s about engaging children in nature and enjoying the bush," she says. "This is a magical place and we want to share it with people."
Lindy says her grandchildren also love to help out, and her 12 year old grandson recently spent the whole day helping her plant trees in the rain. She says they are always looking for new volunteers to help with planting and clearing weeds, and they are also in the process of putting a QE11 covenant over the bush. "It’s a sure way of protecting the bush for life," she says. Kellys Bush will be open to the public this Sunday, 18 September, from 1-4pm, rain or shine, as part of conservation week. The address is 100 Enner Glynn Rd and there will be signs up. No dogs, please.

Viking Furniture and Joinery has been part of the Vanguard St landscape for several decades. After predominantly producing high quality furniture in the early 70s under the Viking logo, the team has evolved with the changing times, resulting in the Viking Furniture and Joinery that people rely on today for their wood working requirements. Barry Thomas manages a very experienced team of joiners who pride themselves on of-

Whatever the project may be that clients bring to the Viking team, Barry has the experience to assist people, including the manufacture of timber windows, antique furniture, modern furniture, kitchens, commercial joinery, reception counters, wardrobe shelving, custom timber doors and, in more recent times, shop fit outs.
There is often the need to repair old pieces of furniture too, and Viking furniture and Joinery has not lost that skill with the passing of time but, rather, has enhanced their craftsmanship with the advent of better materials on offer in the industry. The success of Viking Furniture and Joinery has been in its diverse ability to produce both standard joinery as well as unique timber joinery which are the antiques of the future.

• Workshops are meetings held between Councillors and Council staff to work through issues • There were 86 workshops held between 11 February 2014 and 12 July 2016. • Topics covered included such matters as the Annual Plan; Parking Strategy; Water and Wastewater Bylaws; Solid Waste; Properties; Spotlight on Stoke; Infrastructure Strategy; Events Strategy; Cycling; Trafalgar Centre; Rutherford Park; Health & Safety; and Campgrounds amongst other things. • Meetings are not public. • Nelson Residents Assn thinks too much business is conducted in Workshops that should be in public session. • Regardless Workshops are clearly now an important part of the Council decision making process.
• Attendance is not everything, just one factor to consider. • Councillors who don’t attend meetings don’t get to vote at meetings, so must be less effective. • We accept that many Councillors spend many hours working outside of meetings. Authorised by Nelson Residents Association

Stella, who first tried the sport with her father Paul. “Two years ago I got into the sport as something to do and I found I really enjoyed the challenge of it. “Knowing that I want to get stronger and better is one thing, but knowing that my success comes down to me is what keeps me going.” Stella says her quiet nature means her weightlifting exploits go unnoticed by those around her. “I’m a quiet person and quite awkward when it comes to talking about my sport, but when people do find out they go ‘really? But you’re such a small person’.” Stella also thanked her sponsors, Fit Superstore Richmond and Mad Butcher.

Nelson weightlifter Stella Hampton may be diminutive in size but her strength is taking her all over the world. The 16-year-old, who barely tips the scales at 57kg, will compete at the IWF World Youth Championships and Youth Commonwealth Games next month. The under-58kg clean and jerk, and snatch, competitor is ranked No 1 in New Zealand at an under-20 level and is in the New Zealand High Performance Squad for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Stella often has combined competition total lifts of 122kg and believes it is more mental than physical. “One good thing about
weightlifting is that it’s easy to see progress. “Because it’s one of those sports with a repetitive movement, I’m almost relying on my body to do what it’s trained to do,” she says. “I’m pretty much thinking of nothing so that my body can focus on what it’s meant to do.” Stella finished second in the Oceania Championships in the under-53kg category last year, but this would be her first major international competition against traditional powerhouses China and Russia. “It will be fun to meet everyone and find out where they have all come from to get here, plus the lifters I meet will be the ones competing against me for years to come.” It’s been a meteoric rise for

Giants nab three time NBL champion Jacob Page
The Mike Pero Nelson Giants have signed three-time NBL champion Dion Prewstwr for the 2017 season. The franchise has also announced the re-signings of local players Bronson Beri and Ali Granger. Nelson Giants legend, Phill Jones, who is helping facilitate player negotiations while head coach Tim Fanning is in America, has indicated he has called time on his career after more than 400 NBL games and 22 seasons in the league, after debuting in 1993. Phill says the signings of Ali and Bronson were “the backbone of the team”. He described Dion’s signing as one of an all-rounder, with the 26-year-old shooting guard/ small forward impressing during his time with the Wellington Saints. “He’s a very efficient player, treasures the ball, a solid two and three-point shooter
Giants have picked up three time NBL champion Dion Prewstwr for next year’s NBL season. and I always found playing against him that he was a good defender.” The naturalised Kiwi also won an ANBL title with the Breakers in 2012. Phill says the Giants will also be looking for two new
imports, with Ray Cowels III and Ben Strong moving on. Phill says the team is targeting some added height for 2017 as well as a scorer to complement Nelson’s young New Zealand Breaker Finn Delany. “We really struggled with rebounding last season because we lacked a little height and you just can’t give second chances to teams in this league.” Captain Sam Dempster and Finn had already re-signed with the team. Phill says he will have no full time role with the Giants next season. “I’m fine with stepping away,” Phill says. “I’m happy to help with player contracts like this but my involvement will be very limited once the season starts. “Perhaps Tim (Fanning) will ask me to come in and run a few trainings, but I expect I’ll turn up to watch the first game and people will wonder why I’m not out there playing.”

Golfing dad predicts son's ace
Simon Bloomberg
Veteran golfer Ron Tasker has never had a hole-in-one but this month he experienced the next best thing, standing on the 18th tee and watching his son Regan ace the 17th, just metres away. Ron was playing in a club day at Totaradale Gold Club on September 3 when he and his foursome of Gordy Thomas, Kevin Tippett and Ken Wilson finished teeing off on 18. Regan was about to hit off the 17th tee so Ron suggested they wait and watch his son's shot. And not only did Regan unleash the perfect eight iron on the 122m par three, Ron jokingly predicted what would happen. "I said to the other guys 'I'll wait and watch Regan play his shot in case he gets a hole-in-one'," Ron recalls. "It was a joke, but then I said 'seriously fellas, I think he'll
get a hole-in-one so you'd better watch'." When the ball pitched about two metres from the pin and spun to the right and rolled into the hole, the two foursomes erupted. "There was all this yelling and screaming - there were eight guys going nuts and I was the loudest," Regan says. Ron was also ecstatic and dumfounded at the same time, after watching his unlikely prediction come true. "I was getting high fives. It was unbelievable." It was Regan's second hole-inone after he aced the same hole in a Wanderers Cricket tournament about six years ago. However, Regan, who has a 10 handicap, says the latest ace was by far the best. "This time I'm a club member and got to shout my mates and get my name on that board". "I was telling everyone I saw after playing 17 that there'd be free

only members of the Tasker family to have a hole-in-one, leaving Ron still chasing that dream. "I've been playing for 20 years
and never got one," the 17 handicapper says. "I was inches away at Takaka once but watching Regan's is the next best thing."

Winter fishing in outer Tasman Bay has continued to be good recently with nice catches of snapper, trevally, blue cod and gurnard. However, bigger kingfish have recently been replaced with larger numbers of rat kings. Inner parts of Tasman Bay are still holding plague proportions of spiny dogfish and carpet sharks, particularly when using dead baits. There have been some good catches of gurnard recently in places like Delaware Bay for fishers using alternative methods to bait, such as slow jigs and soft baits. The snapper season in Tasman Bay isn’t far away, so it’s a great time to get out the fishing gear and make sure it’s serviced and ready when the fishing starts to heat up. A reminder that the DawnBreakers fishing

WEEKLY BLOWOUT! OLD PARR OR BUCHANAN’S PREMIUM 12YO BLENDED SCOTCH WHISKY Old Parr whisky is rich and full of impact on palate . It is instantly malty with plenty of sweetness present. This sweetness comes in the form of honey, vanilla, cereals and caramel-like notes, which are backed up by some lovely rich dried fruits (the sultanas and raisins from the nose, plus a hint of fig). With time a powerful note of zesty orange develops, which adds some depth to the taste experience.

JAMESON IRISH WHISKEY
GLENFIDDICH 12YO OR GLENMORANGIE 10YO PREMIUM SINGLE MALT WHISKY Glenmorangie 10YO is produced by marrying the delicate spirit that emerges from Scotland’s tallest stills, with first and second fill American white oak casks. First, vanilla is detected on the tongue before it ripples along the palate bringing a burst of flowery fruitiness. About a minute after tasting, you are left with a clean and salving aftertaste with hints of orange and peach.
