Returned to sender Message in a bottle from Golden Bay found on Boulder Bank 18 months later

Andrew Board A message in a bottle found in the Chatham Islands last week has helped solve the mystery of another letter in a bottle found on Nelson’s Boulder Bank more than a decade ago. Cheryl Baird, of Richmond, and Sharon Gomulski, of Brightwater, found a message inside a plastic Coke bottle on the Boulder Bank while out for a walk on March 24, 2000. When they got home they read the note from a ten year old girl, who wrote that she had “long auburn hair with freckles on my face and my arms”. The message was thrown from the Pakawau Beach in Golden Bay 13 months earlier and the young girl finished her message by scribbling: “If you try to find me go to Pakawau and find a house that’s pink.” Cheryl and Sharon did, several times, but had no luck finding the pink house and over the years forgot about the message – until last week when an article which featured in several news outlets told the story of a Blenheim woman who threw a message in a bottle from Picton in 1995. It was found washed

They did, and a quick Facebook search revealed the writer of the message immediately. “I couldn’t believe how easy it was after all these years. Of course, there was no Facebook

back then. But I put in her name and there she was, Maria Gibney.” Now 27, Maria, who lives in Tahunanui, vaguely remembers writing the note and says she

was stunned when Cheryl sent her a private message via Facebook. “I was like ‘whaaaaat?’ This is crazy.”

She laughed at the note her ten-year-old self wrote, “I don’t know why I thought it was a good idea to describe myself, obviously that was important to me.” The three quickly arranged to meet up and Maria says it was emotional. “My grandparents had a house over there so I spent a lot of my summers over there. This is really special to me, I had a great childhood and it brought up a lot of memories. “When my grandfather passed away, my grandmother moved to Nelson. I think it was probably one of the last times that we were there.” Cheryl and Sharon say they were just happy to have solved the mystery of the message. “We’ve been walking together once a week for 20 years and I’m always fossicking. Sharon always tells me off and I remember the day we found the bottle I was picking up some rope and a bit of net and Sharon told me off. It was when I was there getting the rope that I saw the bottle and that it had a

letter inside it. It would have been hard to see because it was the same colour as the rocks.” Cheryl told Sharon she could see a note in it and they tried to read it then and there, but were distracted by some young men in an inflatable raft getting into trouble. “We helped them get ashore and then took one of them to Richmond, so forgot about the bottle for a bit. After we read it we looked for this little pink house in Pakawau, but we could never find it.” Sharon says they both went over a couple of times to look for the house but eventually packed the message away and, over time, forgot about it. “It’s always been in the back of our minds, we thought ‘we have to find this girl’,” says Cheryl. “It’s amazing, really, that Maria is still in Nelson and still has the same surname. It’s such a great ending to the story.” Maria says she’s going to frame the note, alongside a photo of her grandparents’ bach.

Rainey caught in ‘ciggie’ slur Locally Owned and Operated

Andrew Board

A "throw-away comment" from mayoral candidate Pete Rainey while talking about adding another traffic lane to Tahunanui Drive has left the Tahunanui business community fuming. Speaking at his public meeting in Stoke on Sunday, Rainey was alleged to have said the seven car parks outside the Discount Here, Tahuna Tattoo, Sabai Sabai and Harley Pharmacy were only used by people "buying cheap ciggies". He denied making the comment on Monday morning, telling Nelson Weekly the comment was made by someone in the crowd. But chair of the Tahunanui Business Association and Nelson City Council candidate Mike Rutledge, who was at the meeting, says the comment reinforces negative stereotypes of Tahuna. He was left fuming at the denial and had several attendees of the public meeting, including councillor Ian Barker, call the Weekly office to confirm the comment was made by Rainey. Rainey later conceded he may have made the "throw-away"

comment. “Sorry, I might have said that, I honestly can’t recall. It’s not the issue as far as I’m concerned. I don’t even really Pete Rainey. know what the shops are down there. “The issue is the traffic flow. I honestly can’t recall saying it. “It’s certainly not what I meant. I know there’s a dairy there and somebody had said to me there was cheap cigarettes and I might have mentioned… I honestly can’t recall. It’s not the point. The point was that there were people stopping there for short-stay stops in that area. “I don’t even know; I think that dairy’s closed down now. I don’t even know exactly what’s happening because I never stop there, don’t even notice what’s going on.” The “ciggie” comment was made while discussing his idea to remove the car parks outside the Tahuna businesses and use the space for a second lane through the traffic lights. "Single-laning of that intersection holds a hell of a lot of

people up. There's 26,000 cars a day that go through there, which could be argued to be around 40,000 people. In this scenario it has to be 'what's for the greater good?'” he says. Rainey suggested the current single lane was reintroduced by former chair of the works and infrastructure committee Eric Davy because it creates congestion and adds to the argument for the Southern Link. Davy says Rainey’s suggestion was “outrageously untrue” and that the double-laning idea is already planned to happen. “The reason the clearway was removed was because of the danger to people using the inside lane that was blocked by stationary traffic. It was agreed with NZTA [owners of the road] that we would go back to single-laning until such time as the parking could be relocated behind the shops. It’s only a short period of time until the single-laning would expire and the clearway would go back in.” Rainey says that’s good news, but he wasn’t aware of that plan. “He [Davy] certainly hasn’t articulated it, maybe there was a communication problem. But I’m glad to hear that.”

Case of missing moggie solved Simon Bloomberg Riley the fluffy black cat is back with his Nelson owners Stu and Nicky Reid this week after he was inadvertently ‘catnapped’ in a bizarre case of mistaken identity. Stu says Riley is a cat that “likes sticking to his routines” and so they were very concerned when he wasn’t waiting for them on the veranda when they arrived home from work last Friday. When Riley still hadn’t shown up by Sunday, Nicky and Stu were so worried they started putting fliers in letterboxes around their neighbourhood, asking if anyone had seen their beloved cat. But what Stu and Nicky didn’t know was that Riley had been inadvertently catnapped by Ben Douglas and Gemma Thawley who had just moved out of their house down the street. Riley is identical to Ben and Gemma’s cat Billy, and they took Riley with them by mistake when they

moved to their new home near Panorama Heights. “Riley was in their house when they moved so they took him by mistake,” Stu says. “I suppose they would have been rushing around and a bit distracted with moving house and they would have just thrown him in a cat cage Do you want to work in: and gone. “It’s easy to see how it happened because they are pretty much identical, although Riley is just a bit fluffier. Billy wasn’t there Take the first step. at the time so they just grabbed Information Session Riley instead.” Wednesday 21 September, 6 - 7pm Although Ben and Gemma iniS Block (Room S103), 73 Nile Street, Nelson Campus Contact: 03 546 9175 ext. 727, socialwork@nmit.ac.nz tially didn’t realise their mistake, they did notice that Billy was > Bachelor of Social Work acting strangely and was not his usual friendly self. move and so locked him a room with a dirt box and hoped he’d settle down. “Bill is a bit of a skittish cat anyway and we thought he was just hating the move,” Ben says. “The vet said to lock him in a room for 10 days to help him get used to the place, so we didn’t pay too much attention to him. “It seems like a silly thing to do, but he looks identical to Bill and he was in our house when we moved so we just grabbed him and put him in the cat cage and left. I think Gemma was starting to have her doubts but she wasn’t sure - we would have realised eventually but at the time we just thought Bill was upset.” And as Stu explains, that’s how the catnapping saga may have ended if Nicky hadn’t gone walking with a friend around Tahuna last Tuesday night. “Nicky was walk-

ing with her friend and she saw an empty house for rent, and so they went and had a look around the property for Riley. They didn’t find the cat, but Nicky did see an outdoor chess set and that interested her because she had a friend who was looking for one. “So we found out that Ben owned the house and I phoned him to ask about the chess set. I explained that Nicky had gone onto the property because she was looking for our cat and hoped he didn’t mind. “Ben said the chess set had been there when they brought the place and he was leaving it there for the new owners, so he couldn’t help. But then he phoned back on Wednesday and asked me what our cat looked like and I told him. “Ben said ‘that sounds just like our cat Billy’ and asked if I could send a photo, so I did. He called back and said ‘I think we have your cat” and a few hours later Gemma turned up at our place with Riley. “I hadn’t told Nicky about it yet so she was really surprised. She was so happy to have Riley back, but it’s sad for Ben and Gemma because now they have a missing cat.” However, Ben says Billy is a bit of a wanderer and had gone off for two or three weeks before, so they are optimistic he will show up at their old house. He says they plan to keep looking and, with new tenants are moving into their old house, hopefully Bill might come around looking for food. If anyone has seen a large, fluffy, black cat around the Tamaki St area, please contact Ben on 021 249 1195.

New subdivision sells out in a day Locally Owned and Operated

Simon Bloomberg The Nelson property market continues to skyrocket with 49 sections in a planned Richmond subdivision signed up by buyers in just 24 hours, with many more missing out on the deal. Interest in Hart Rise on Paton Rd, south of Richmond, was red hot, with Summit Real Estate director Allister Nalder saying the first stage of the 140-section subdivision was “considerably over-subscribed”. Although the resource consent for subdividing the 11.5 hectare property is still pending, demand for the August 26 release was “unprecedented”. “I’ve been in real estate in Nelson for 34 years and it even surprised me,” Allister says. “We saw something similar in the boom of 2003 and 2004, but this is even bigger.” Summit’s Richmond branch manager Gordon Webb was also astounded by the demand for the sections, which were sold “under agreement” subject to title being issued. I’M STANDING FOR ACTION NOW ON CONGESTION There is no doubt we’ve got issues with peak hour congestion. Right now, we don’t know if the Southern Link highway will go ahead, and if it does get the green light, it will be years away. Nelson can’t wait – let’s take action now and get the traffic moving.

Summit Real Estate Richmond office manager Gordon Webb with the subdivision plans for Hart Rise just south of Richmond. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. says the 49 sections range in size from 400 to 700 square metres and sold for an average of $250,000. “The syndicate has owned the land for six years and we have had people coming to us and asking if we had any sections available for a while now. Once the resource consent was in the system we decided to go and see how the market would respond, so our agents sought expressions of interest - it was so fast it really surprised us.” Gordon says the demand for sections in Nelson and Tasman is being created by “a perfect

storm” of low interest rates, a lack of suitable flat land for subdivision and a backlog of home owners who have been waiting to sell their house and upgrade their investment. He expects the titles to the sections to be issued in July and, “if everything goes well”, the first houses will be completed by October or November next year. The Hart Rise subdivision will feature an entranceway off Hart Rd, a new reserve, and it will link in with a planned cycleway that will run from Hill St out to the coast.

Kitty litter covers carpark: Members of the public were left confused after walking past the 623 corner of Buxton Square during Friday’s downpour. The corner was covered with kitty litter which, in the sudden rainfall, spread across the carpark and flooded a drain, leaving onlookers complaining about the “massive mess”. A council spokesperson has since confirmed that the kitty litter was spread across the carpark corner by Downers, following an oil spill from a hydraulic vehicle pump earlier that morning. The kitty litter has since been swept up and the area has been tidied.

Car down bank finally towed Locally Owned and Operated

Kate Russell

After four-months of having an unwanted car perched above his property – and many attempts to get it removed – Nelson home owner Reuben Young finally has his backyard back. The car was removed by Nelson Police on Friday morning, after countless phone calls and emails. The Subaru Legacy landed in Reuben’s back yard on Henrietta Way back in May, after it went over the bank on the corner of Quebec Road and Abraham Heights. But despite several frustrating phone calls to the police, nothing was done about it. Then in August, Nelson Weekly stepped in to help by contacting the police for some answers. But still nothing was

The car down a bank and behind Reuben Young’s house before it was removed. done. That’s when Reuben started to notice people sneaking onto his property to look at the car. The Weekly contacted the police again last week and also called several Nelson tow firms to see if they could help out with removing it. But only two companies said they were able to do it, at a cost of $300 – $800 due to the steep location and specialist equip-

ment needed. Then, last Friday morning, Reuben received a surprise phone call from the police saying they would get it towed, and it was removed just a few hours later. Sergeant Greg Beer of Nelson police says police do not normally arrange the removal of private property from nonpublic places, but in this instance, due to the possible consequences of damage the victim’s property, police assisted in the vehicle’s removal and will work with other parties to dispose of the vehicle and recover the costs involved. Reuben says that he can now “sleep easy” knowing the car is no longer perched above his house. “It was dangerous, because it was encouraging people to come on to my property either to take parts."

Each of the six players were presented with a Waimea Old Boys scarf and Liam was challenged to wear it in the Marist clubrooms next season.

'Welcome cloak' gets mixed reviews Brittany Spencer

Nelson's newest public artwork has received a mixed response from members of the public. On Friday, nelsonlive.co.nz hit the streets, asking the community what they thought of the $51,000 artwork above Saltwater Creek on Haven Rd. ‘Welcome Cloak’ is an anodized gold aluminium cloak of feathers hanging above Saltwater creek and is designed to move with the wind and reflect in the water below. Atawhai's Marg

Meek thought it brought a bit of fun to the CBD. "I think it's great, it's really great to see something different and diverse in Nelson, it's reflective and it's fun." However Port Hills resident James Graham says he's not a fan. "It's probably a waste of taxpayer's money... in the wind, it gets twisted and it looks a bit silly as you're driving into town." The story and video also sparked a wide range of views online. Chris Williams commented, "There are people struggling to

Welcome Cloak above Saltwater Creek. feed their families! I think $50k could have been spent better. DNA of Nelson or not. I would prefer to think the DNA of Nel-

son is to be a community that looks after each other." It also appears there has been some confusion over what the

cloak was, with some people thinking it was meant to be a school of fish, seaweed, streamers, strings of sausages hung out to dry, or even whitebait. Rozane Stephenson says she loves the way it catches the morning sun and shines. "It bought a smile on my morning commute, I thought it's good they picked something so pretty and vibrant." However, Janine Brennan says that could be a problem."It's in the wrong place when the sun catches it, it's blinding."

Nelson's young drivers among the country's best Pass rates are climbing and crashes are declining, as young Nelson drivers near the top in road rule knowledge The NZ Transport Agency says Nelson received New Zealand's second-highest pass rate for learner driver licence theory tests. The regional pass rate for the Class 1 theory test has reached 73 per cent this year, second only to Manawatu on 75 per cent and a big increase from just 56 per cent in 2010. Regional manager Kate Styles says the region's improvement shows young drivers are making a real effort to know the road code. "It's encouraging that our new generation of young drivers are increasingly showing that they're willing and ready to get a good understanding of the rules to help them share our roads safely." The number of fatal and serious injury crashes involving teenage drivers in Nelson has dropped from 10 in 2009 to just two last year.

New petrol station for Richmond A resource consent has been granted to Caltex Bishopdale owner Kyle Lightfoot to build a petrol station on the corner of Champion Rd and Salisbury Rd, adjacent to the Richmond Aquatic Centre. Kyle lodged the consent in May and it was approved by the Tasman District Council in July. Nelson company Coman Holdings Limited owns the 5260 square metre site at 149 Salisbury Rd after purchasing it from the council last year. Kyle says the petrol station will be constructed as soon as possible, although can't put a timeline on the project because there were too many variables to still consider. "We still have to go through the building consent process and then it will be Christmas, so I can't say when we will start," Kyle says. "But we want to build it as soon as we possibly can." Although the land is zoned for tourism and cannot be used for residential development, council approved the consent because the application was for the same area of land that had a consent granted for commercial development in 2014. It was considered that a petrol station would not result in any additional adverse effects on the tourist services zone.

MERCHANT NAVY DAY: Lone piper Bryce Gilchrist leads the parade at Saturday’s Merchant Navy Day. Families and friends gathered in front of the war memorial as seafarers paraded along Haven Rd and into the park, passing through a guard of honour formed by the TS Talisman Sea Cadets. Dave Lawes from the Nelson Merchant Navy Association served on the sea for “40 odd years” and says the day was a fitting tribute. To watch a video of the parade, go to www.nelsonlive.co.nz. Begin your travel experience with Kelly Bowater

Gondola support appreciated: It was great to read the letter in last week’s paper by Nelson City Councillor Matt Lawrey on the gondola. Personally, I love the idea of splashing the word ‘NELSON’ across the gondola’s cabins for the world to see. It would certainly be a cost effective way of getting the word out about the world-class adventure and lifestyle opportunities on offer in our special part of the world. Thanks to Nelson City Council’s support, the Nelson Cycle Lift Society will soon be commissioning a pre-commercial business plan so that we can decide to offer the gondola to the investor market. We will also be hiring a manager to take the project to the next level, which will include applying for additional funding from central government. We are also about to launch a Facebook page to promote the project and keep the community up-to-date on its progress. As Matt pointed out, the gondola could be a game-changer for Nelson and all of us on the society are grateful for the support we’re receiving from Council and the wider community. Exciting times ahead! Jo Rainey, Nelson Cycle Lift Society.

A train or tram station that connects all the main centres up would be cool and get cars off the roads to make it flow better. Unused land will get a user as well as creating jobs and inputting back into the local economy. Not to mention a 2nd choice for motorists using AA card for fuel discounts. Woo! Luke Marshall. Election signs: Can the Nelson City Council explain why I am not allowed to put a ‘For Sale’ sign on my car beside a road because it is considered a hazard by causing a ‘distraction’ to drivers, and yet it is OK for them to allow all the current election posters to be erected by the various candidates? Trevor Gebbie. NCC responds: The Electoral Act 1993 allows for election signs up to three square metres in size to be put up in the two months before election day. This overrides any local rules about size and timing of the display of signs. There are still specific rules to minimise distraction including the size of lettering and quantity of signs allowed (10 throughout the city). More information can be seen on nelson.govt.nz – Search “Election Hoardings”.

Washington Valley store has a history worth celebrating Kate Russell It may look like your regular local dairy from the outside, but inside you’ll find some of the best pies in Nelson, a book swap, along with a very interesting history. The Washington Valley Store, situated half-way down Washington Rd, was one of Nelson’s original ‘down-town’ supermarkets in the 1960s. Now, new owner Laura Jacobs is slowly bringing the old building back to life - and business is booming. “It was very run down,” says Laura, who took over the building in April last year after moving to Nelson from Auckland with her husband. “We’ve slowly been bringing it back to life – getting rid of the dingy blue walls and brightening it up.” The store already has quite the following around the region, with Laura’s homemade pies flying out the door. Coffee, ice cream, cafe food and milkshakes are also on offer, along with a community corner and ‘book swap’ initiative. “People bring in their

It’s a great conversation starter with some of the local residents,” says Laura. But what has really interested the new owner is the history of the building, and Laura has been hearing plenty of stories about its past from her customers. “It was built in 1962 and was one of the only downtown supermarkets before all the big ones came to Nelson,” she says. “I’ve had a few of the old check-out girls come and see me and tell me some good

stories. One lady met her husband when they worked here together in the 1970s, and another told me about how they used to deliver groceries and milk on Mondays and Tuesdays. “In the 1980s it changed into a four-square store - and now, this is where we are at. It’s gone through a huge progression, but it nice to know it has always been a little community store.” Laura says she wants to eventually develop the store into a cafe, adding more chairs, tables and couches, and more food to the menu.

Towering tree could be big attraction Simon Bloomberg A group of tree enthusiasts believe a towering eucalyptus near Richmond, that is one of the five tallest trees in the country, could become a popular destination for walkers and tourists. The giant Eucalyptus regnans, or mountain ash, is growing in Kingsland Forest behind Easby Park and was officially measured at 72.1 metres in 2009 by Richmond arborist Brad Cadwallader and climber Menno Kluiters. At the time, it was the second-tallest measured tree in New Zealand behind an 80m mountain ash in the Orokonui Eco-sanctuary near Dunedin, and Richmond's Sally and Brent Curtis say that qualifies the tree as a potential tourist attraction. "This tree needs to be a destination - it's very impressive," Brent says. "It's amazing that we have the second tallest tree in New Zealand and not too many people even know about it." Although there is a track from Easby Park that leads to the tree, which is known as the Barrington Gum, Brent says the track needs upgrading to make it safe for all levels of walkers. Brent says he also has some timber milled from the same species of tree that he would like to donate to make signage

"Wouldn't it be great if council could clear a picnic area around the tree and people could sit on seats and picnic tables made out of the same timber." Brent says he has spoken to David Burt from Keep Richmond Beautiful about the tree and they are keen to help out. Sally has also contacted Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne about their proposal and she says he is very supportive of the idea. Brad, who is manager of the New Zealand Tree Register,

also thinks the tree could become a destination for walkers and tourists. He says people will be astounded by the size of the 160-year-old tree which has a diameter of 2.35m and towers above the surrounding pine trees. "It was the second tallest tree in New Zealand when we measured it," Brad says. "There are now a few more trees in the 70 metre class but it's safe to say it is in the top five. "I have laser-measured it since 2009 and it had grown a bit but it hasn't quite reached 73 metres yet. The big gums in the Waimea College bus bay are only about 26 metres high, so that puts it in perspective." Brad says the tree was planted as part of a "classic" forestry block of pine trees, macrocarpa and eucalypts as part of Barrington Farm back in 1860 or 1870. It escaped disaster in the December 2011 floods when a torrent of mud and debris narrowly missed the tree, leaving a stream flowing beside the stem. Brad says mountain ash and redwoods are two of the tallest tree species in the world. Mountain ash in Tasmania have been measured at 100m high - kahikatea and rimu are the tallest native trees in New Zealand and they have only been measured up to 56 metres.

Takeaways have always been a kiwi family favourite, whether they’re enjoyed around the dinner table or at the beach. Becs and Jeremy Ravenscroft are the proud new owners of Black Cat Takeaways, having relocated from Ashburton with their four children, Mason, 4, Flynn, 3, Isabella, 1, and Jeremy & Becs Ravenscroft Liam, 14. “I’m originally from Nelson but I’ve been living in Ashburton for the last 10 or 11 years as it’s where Jeremy was based, but I’d always wanted to come back home” says Becs. After viewing various businesses and seeing potential in Black Cat Takeaways, the pair purchased the store and have been open for business for a month. Black Cat Takeaways is located on Annesbrook Drive and has ample parking, making it a quick and convenient stop. Putting their mark on the store has also seen Becs and Jeremy add burgers back to the menu, as well as affordable family packs. They have painted and freshened up the appearance of the store both inside and out, and also updated the menu. They’ve even been properly schooled in the art of cooking the perfect piece of fish and ensuring food is well drained, so customers can enjoy a perfect takeaway meal. With four children, Becs and Jeremy are very family-focused and are keen to welcome more families to Black Cat Takeaways. “Many people can’t afford to go out for a meal, which is why fish and chips make a great treat that many families can afford to enjoy,” says Becs. They’re also thrilled to be making Nelson their home, taking pleasure in everything the area has to offer, from beaches to the warm, sunny climate. “It’s a beautiful place and has great people,” says Jeremy. “A big part of why we moved was for the benefit of the kids and our own lifestyle change.” says Becs. With a new look and new owners, make sure you head to Black Cat Takeaways for a great family treat that’s quick, affordable and tastes great.

GENERATIONS OF NELSON Brought to you by Marsden House

From river mouth to Beach

The Waimea River mouth and “Bolton’s Hole” once provided safe anchorage where Tahuna Beach is now. In 1854, the river’s Eastern Branch flowed through the back beach channel, discharging directly towards the Nelson haven

outflow, resulting in “Bolton’s Hole”. One of the early routes to the Waimea Plains, this branch was navigable by whaleboats as far as Cotterell’s Landing. By 1881, the Waimea carved a new channel and the beach began to form.

Winter Warrior lends helping hand Jessie Johnston With a successful Wairua Winter Warrior done and dusted, the only thing left to do was hand over the proceeds to some much-deserving community groups. Greg and Donna Witika of Wairua Body Coaching Systems organised the first Wairua Winter Warrior which took place on August 20. They also organise the Wairua Warrior which began in April 2015. The recipients of the winter obstacle course event were Life Education Trust and Fuzion, a local dance crew who are off to the Hip Hop Unite World Championships later on this year. “We believe that Life Education does a great job, they’ve been our charity since we started and all the money raised stays local which is the most important thing,” says Greg. With several of the dance crew’s mothers being members of the gym, Fuzion was also an obvious choice when it came to financial support. “They’ve

While Fuzion received around $368, Life Education Trust was donated $2000. “It’s a real honor to be involved with these guys, their focus, their ability to motivate people and rising up for a challenge is really akin to what we want to achieve with young kids through Life Ed,” says Life Education Trust

Retirement

Whether retirement is creeping up quickly or seems too far away to worry about, it’s important to start making financial plans, a task Nelson Budget Service can help with. Those in retirement receive two main forms of income, money from their personal savings and money from New Zealand Superannuation payments, however, 40 per cent of over 65 year olds rely on superannuation alone. Nelson Budget Service reminds people that it’s

never too late to start and, whatever your financial goals are, you are much more likely to achieve them when you have a plan for your money. The team offers free, confidential, one-on-one advice, financial literacy education, as well as a number of Sorted seminar workshops, including one on retirement planning. While it’s never too late to start, earlier is better so give Nelson Budget Service a call today.

Getting older goes hand and hand with many physical changes, including the loss of muscle, unless, of course, you do something about it. Coaching is included in your membership fee, meaning you have as much or as little support from Curves’ instructors as you require, at no extra cost. ‘Boss’ of midfield makes an impression Nelson College First XI footballer Thomas Amasia joined Nelson College from the Solomon Islands at the start of the year, bringing only a pair of boots and shin pads with him. The quietly spoken midfielder lets his play on the pitch do most of the talking. So much so that after a 3-1 Tasman Trophy semi-final win over FC Nelson at Guppy Park on Saturday, Tasman United coach Richard Anderson was having a chat to the Solomon Islands' age-group representative.

Jacob Page Sports Editor

sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Thomas says adjusting to life in New Zealand was relatively enjoyable. "I was lucky, I got a second pair of boots". He also admitted he fell in love with the food in the Nelson College boarding house, which was more readily available than he was used to back home. Despite the heavy workload, Thomas says he has enjoyed playing a lot of football

in a short space of time with a national tournament campaign and chasing trophies in the Nelson Bays competition. Nelson College team manager Dave Tinker says Thomas has become a key. "He's the boss, he's the one in control out there. He's been fantastic all season.” Dave says if Tasman United are interested in signing him to a youth deal, then we may see more of the talented player who is scheduled to go home to see his family before Christmas.

TALK TO STUDENT JOB SEARCH AND SANITI CAREERS WHEN

WHERE

11:30am–1pm, 13th, 14th and 15th September 2016

Student Centre, NMIT

Tertiary Students - Get essential advice and support to land the job you want Student Job Search (SJS) is working alongside NMIT and their student association, SANITI, to assist Nelson tertiary students with the necessary skills they need for their job hunt. The two services are combining forces to hold a three day employment workshop for tertiary students, which will be held at the student centre at NMIT from the 13th – 15th September 2016. SJS representatives and the SANITI Employment Coordinator will be offering advice on CV and cover letter writing, interviews and application skills, as well as informing students about what jobs are currently available in the Nelson region. Nicola Smith from Student Job Search explains, “Our intention is to not only be on campus with SANITI to provide support to students at NMIT to build these essential skills but also to make local employers aware of the quality of students available, particularly with the summer period fast approaching”. For tertiary students, now is the perfect time to start thinking about what needs to be done in preparation for job hunting. The best summer jobs get snapped up quickly, which is why we want to help to ensure students are ready to hit the ground running with their job search, applications and interviews to land the perfect job. Whether it’s for some extra cash, or to gain some work experience, it’s always best to be

equipped with the rights skills and be prepared. SJS hosts a range of one-off, casual, part time and full time jobs, which are dedicated to meeting the needs of all students. With a huge range of jobs from lawn-mowing and childcare, to hospitality, retail and a number of office-based roles, SJS are sure to have something suitable for everyone. For employers, whether you’re a household or a professional organisation, SJS provides the opportunity to advertise your jobs for free. SJS has over 34 years experience of matching students with employers and has access to over 200,000 tertiary students looking for work. To ensure employers get the right person for the job, SJS interview all successful applicants by phone to provide a shortlist of candidates for the employer to then choose from. At Student Job Search they hear first-hand from employers that hiring a student has changed their work place for the better. A student’s energy, positivity, humour and overall eagerness to be in their first job can transform the work environment overnight. For further information on Student Job Search or if you’re interested in attending the workshop at NMIT, please visit the website at www.sjs.co.nz or call us on 0800 757 562. Business Update. Adv.
