Dairy farmer Brian wins ‘Miss Murch’ crown ELOISE MARTYN Nine Murchison lads took to the stage to compete in a mockery beauty pageant for the title of ‘Miss Murchison’ to raise funds for the local theatre - and there were plenty of laughs and ripped pantyhose. “We thought if we can get some guys who are brave enough to get up there it could be a really fun, light-hearted night,” say Murchison Theatre’s Cheryl Monahan. The beauty pageant consisted of the ‘lad-ies’ competing in categories, including own talents, evening wear and questions, and a swimsuit section. “The swimsuit section was certainly interesting,” Cheryl laughs. Brian Dineen, a 6’4 tall dairy farmer, was crowned Miss Murchison, the overall winner, who was chosen by the audience in a voting process. “The whole thing was pretty unnerving to be fair,” Brian says.

“The hardest part was trying to get the make-up off. I was milking the cows the next morning with mascara and nail polish on thinking, ‘I really hope no one turns up’.” Brian says that Murchison is a great community that sticks together and he was pleased to be part of giving back. “The boys were all very brave. It’s not easy to put yourself in a vulnerable spot, but if it helps the local community, you just have to take a deep breath and dive in.” Cheryl says that the Murchison Theatre can’t thank the ‘lad-ies’ enough for taking the time to help raise the much-needed funds and for putting themselves completely outside of their comfort zones. “Everyone had such a good time, there were so many laughs as well as ripped pantyhose. We raised much-needed funds for the theatre which is a community-owned building.”

New generation of nicotine dependency ANNE HARDIE A local vape shop owner says the high number of young people vaping in New Zealand is a legacy of the late Labour Government, and its new legislation coming into force will ultimately encourage a new generation of nicotine dependency. Instead of banning disposable vapes as it intended, he says that from 21 December the dispos-

able vapes simply need to have removable batteries, a child-safety mechanism, and not exceed nicotine levels of 20mg/ml. He says that means the industry now has clear rules to follow for compliant, disposable vapes which will be rapidly mass-produced to fit the rules. That will make disposable vapes cheaper and they will appeal even more to younger people who will buy them via someone older than 18 who can

LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED

legally buy them. However, Nelson MP Rachel Boyack says the Labour government put regulations in place to try and make it harder for young people to pick up and continue vaping through a suite of measures to make vapes less accessible and less attractive to young people. “When it comes to harm reduction measures for things like vaping and smoking, a constant

response is needed. What’s really important is government and opposition parties work together.” The vape shop owner’s name is withheld as businesses selling vapes face fines up to $200,000 if they advertise or promote vaping, and talking with media could be interpreted as promotional. He says it has made it difficult for the vape industry to put their side of the story across and says it is frustrating to see what has hap-

pened in an industry intended to help people quit smoking and save lives. He is a former heavy smoker who had life-threatening health issues due to his addiction and says he would not be alive today without vaping to replace smoking cigarettes. His own success led him to run his own specialist vape business

New generation of nicotine dependency FROM PAGE 1 where he could help others quit smoking. In the past five years, vaping has helped New Zealand drop its smoking rate faster than ever before, but he says poor legislation has encouraged young people to take up vaping and that was not the intention of the industry. “We’ve got a younger generation getting their hands on an addictive product. I hate seeing kids with vapes, full stop. I absolutely abhor it. “From someone who wants to see people quit smoking, the last Government has almost created the next generation of smoking with their legislation.” In his own shop, he blacklists anyone who appears to

be buying disposables that might be sold to young people under the legal age of 18. Until 2020 there were about 600 specialist vape shops around the country. But within a year of legislation being introduced for the first time, he says there were more than 1,200 new vape shops opening that only needed a separate entrance door to existing businesses selling other goods. Now, he says, the horse has bolted and young people can readily access vapes and he says it will be a challenge for the new government to change its course, if it decides to try. He is hoping that this Government will talk to the people at the industry’s coalface who are there to help people

quit smoking. “If I could wave a magic wand, I’d say ban all disposables. “Kids can afford $10 on a disposable vape, but the likelihood of them spending $80 to vape on a Saturday night is pretty slim.” Another legislative change that was brought in last September banned some flavours aimed at young people such as cotton candy and strawberry jelly donut. Though it was a start, he says the number of flavours that appeal to young people is still huge and the culling of flavours seemed to be random. While blackcurrant was banned, pineapple, mango, caramel and custard remain which appeal to young vapers.

“It’s like someone sat in an office and they’ve just spun the wheel.” He would like to see the industry get back to solely helping people quit smoking, but doubts that will happen now. “The difference between vaping and smoking can be life or death and that’s where the passion lies for me. “It’s about those guys like me who would have gone to the grave with a cigarette in their mouth.” Rachel says she has no doubt that in the coming years, more restrictions will be needed. “It happens, you have a product that’s been popular, you put regulation in place so consumption comes down and another product comes along.”

Richmond Santa Parade cancelled

The Pak ‘N’ Save Richmond Santa Parade which was set to jingle all the way down Queen St on Sunday was cancelled. Event organisers, Richmond Unlimited and Pop Up Events, made the announcement on Saturday, stating that it wasn’t safe for the parade to proceed due to anticipated weather events. All floats have been offered a spot in the Nelson Santa Parade this Sunday.

Waimea Dam awaits much-needed rain

The construction of the Waimea Dam is almost complete, and the reservoir is filling in controlled stages. As of 17 November, the dam was holding just over 3.5 million cubic metres of water with the maximum capacity of the dam at about 13 million cubic metres. To date, the dam has passed three of four monitoring stages and is performing as expected. If the dry weather continues, the reservoir may not fully fill until January/ February 2024.

Landfill primed for ‘nuclear’ response to truck driver on cellphone MAX FRETHEY

Local Democracy Reporter

One distracted driver may result in the region’s landfill banning a waste disposal company from using the facility. On 26 July, the driver passed all signs and indicating arrows to direct him to the tip area because he was distracted by his cellphone. Members of the Nelson Tasman Regional Landfill Business Unit were told on Friday by general manager regional sewerage and landfill, Nathan Clarke, that the incident is proving “difficult”. The root of the trouble is that the company that employs the driver is not responding to the business unit’s enquiries about the incident. “People make mistakes, and I can understand that, but the fact that we haven’t got a response, or an adequate response, in quite a long time – and that’s not through our lack of asking – that’s the significant piece here,” Nathan says. “I don’t want to go essentially nuclear on them but at the same time we’ve got to make

sure the people on the site are safe.” Nelson councillor Mel Courtney pointed out that using a cellphone while driving is an offence on the country’s roads and that perhaps the landfill should investigate delivering penalties in the future. As the landfill is not a private road it’s not currently known how the business unit could enforce that rule, but Nathan highlighted that the threat of not being able to use the Nelson Tasman region’s only active landfill could be enough. “The most significant thing to any company that disposes waste is if they can’t dispose waste. I don’t think we’re going to go there but, at the same time, maybe we have to,” he says. “They’ve got to be cognisant that safety is paramount.” Landfill business unit chair and Tasman’s deputy mayor Stuart Bryant asked if the planned temporary transfer facility would have reduced the likelihood of this incident occurring. Currently, trucks are guided to different locations around

the landfill’s tip face to dispose of their waste. The landfill is working towards installing a transfer facility that would allow trucks to offload their waste in the same location every visit. Nathan didn’t think the transfer facility would have had an impact in this instance and could even encourage complacency because the drivers would always know where to go. However, he did add that the transfer facility would reduce the likelihood of many of the landfill’s other health and safety incidents. “The driver behaviour thing is something we’ll have to get on top of and make sure that we are trying to maintain a safe [environment].” The temporary transfer facility is expected to be constructed by early March. Nelson City Council provides administration services for the landfill business unit and declined to reveal which company was involved in the incident.

Waimea Village is now their ‘happy place’ ANNE HARDIE

Waimea Village residents Barry Wilson (left), Joyce Wilson, Vera White, Barb Wylie (rear) and John Hewison beside a statue given to the village when it became a company. Photo: Anne Hardie.

It has been 10 years since Waimea Village residents formed a company and took charge of their village, turning it into their “happy place”. Most of the 260 residents who live in the 170 homes off Gladstone Rd own shares in the village, which is run by a five-person board, including three non-residents, giving them control of their homes and money. The company structure followed a long and stressful battle with the former owners, largely about the increasing cost of monthly levies and funding for repairs. It went on for three years and today’s residents say the community support at the time helped them achieve a happy outcome. Chairman of the village resident’s association, John Hewison, says, the structure works well for residents and could be replicated around the country to provide more affordable homes with the benefits of being part of a

small community. The village is entirely independent living, where residents own their homes and the village owns the land. Residents buy a share in the land – or they can pay a monthly lease. “One of the beauties is you own your own equity, control your destination and have a choice,” John says. The majority of the residents are now single, living by themselves, and many have lived in the village for more than 20 years. Anyone can buy a home when one is for sale, and there is more of a mix in the community now, including families with children. Joyce Wilson says forming a company and buying shares “worked well and achieved heaps”. “It’s settled and happy now – it is a community. When anyone new moves in, they get a meet and greet, and we get their next of kin details.” Street wardens keep an eye on those in their street, especially elderly who may need help or when some-

one is away and wants someone to watch over their home. It even has the Village Heartbeat – a monthly newsletter that is distributed to all the residents. The village was built in the 1980s and has been there long enough to become intergenerational. Vera White’s father Charlie Blance lived in the village until he was 94 and was part of a team of residents who built the Blue Heron Lounge at its centre when he was in his 80s. When Vera moved into the village, she could look out her window and see her father’s house. Residents say the village manager Glyn Cunningham has played a key role in the past few years, ensuring the village runs smoothly. A monthly levy covers management of the grounds and the lounge, and these days increases in the levy are controlled by the board. Barb Wylie says it is a “really, really well-run village”. “It’s my happy place.”

Breakthrough bioactive compound secures approval Aether Pacific’s promising future in medicinal innovation Aether Pacific Pharmaceuticals, the parent company of business units Medical Kiwi, The Pain Clinic and Hardie Health, has achieved a significant milestone with the global patent approval of its bioactive compound, Balaenone. Balaenone is a type of sesquiterpene – a class of compounds that are commonly found to have positive medicinal properties. Sequiterpenes are a class of terpenes found in natural products that have attracted significant interest among medical researchers for their therapeutic properties. The patent has been formally granted in the jurisdictions of Great Britain, France and Germany. The patent, covering all medicinal uses of Balaenone, serves as a strong barrier to entry, to support Aether Pacific’s pursuit of future commercial channels for health applications. The primary use-case for Balaenone is expected to be in the field of antibiotic-resistant bacteria – an increasingly prevalent issue in the field of global health where new classes of antibiotics are required to treat bacterial infections that have become resistant to standard care. The development of new medical formulations using Balaenone will be carried out in conjunction with the Ferrier Research Institute – the chemistry focused R&D arm of

Victoria University of Wellington – which is also a shareholder in Aether Pacific. The journey began in 2019 when Aether Pacific’s 100%-owned subsidiary Hardie Health, filed the patent application under the Patent Cooperation Treaty. Hardie Health was founded by mining entrepreneur Mr Duncan Hardie in 2016 and is focused on the research, development and commercialisation of plant-based novel compounds which can be used across a range of applications. Now, with granted patents in key European jurisdictions and pending approvals in China and Japan, Aether Pacific with applications in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Korea now expected to be granted in coming years. Aether Pacific Pharmaceuticals are excited to have achieved these patent approvals in several important international market jurisdictions. The approvals lay a strong foundation for the further growth of our IP for the application of Balaenone, that is ultimately expected to cover all of the world’s largest markets and most advanced medical jurisdictions. Aether Pacific Pharmaceuticals is currently undertaking a capital raise through Catalist’s Licensed Stock Exchange Market. For more information text GROW to 3598 or at greenkiwi.info. Quiz nights fundraise $100k for community ANNE HARDIE Quiz nights have tested the brain of many quiz teams at Sprig and Fern taverns around the region this year and also fundraised $100,000 for an eclectic mix of charities and clubs. Nine taverns in Nelson and Tasman held weekly quiz nights between March and the end of November where each week a different group sold raffle tickets for prizes it had organised and also collected $5 from every quiz player. The top fundraising night at Sprig and Fern The Meadows was $1,643 and by the end of the quiz season, owners Nick and Vicki Rose say $27,568 had been raised at the tavern for the various fundraising groups, from tapdancing and cheerleading to Nelson Special Olympics, diabetes and Waimea sheepdog trials. Nick says groups received 100 per cent of the money and the more effort groups put into finding good prizes and cajoling the quiz teams to buy raffle tickets, the more money they collected. The tavern has had up to 24 teams of six people at one sitting, giving fundraising groups a sizeable gathering to raise money.

For its part, the tavern pays for the quiz master and adds some prizes to the mix that are then raffled to teams that also vie for the most creative name. In the mix this year were ‘And in last place’, ‘No eye deer’ and Nick and Vicki’s personal favourite, ‘We thought this was speed dating’.

Some fundraising groups, such as fencing – the sport, not the post and wire type - plus a women’s marching team, even put on a display to rally support from the quiz teams. “It’s great for us to give them an opportunity to raise much-needed funds - fundraising is so hard. “It’s a win-win because it’s good

for us and the participants, and good for the groups that benefit from it.” The quiz nights cease through summer and begin again in March. “They seem to be a winter sport and what else can you do on a Tuesday night?” Nick says the success of the quiz

nights revolves around quiz masters who come up with the questions each week and have the personality to run the quiz. “They come up with 60 questions each week, so a lot of work is involved. They don’t just turn up and it’s done. They’re characters and that’s what gets us a good attendance.”

Hayden signs off from Footy club ELOISE MARTYN He’s been a part of Wakefield’s Senior Football Club for 22 years, and for the past half decade has dedicated his time to growing and strengthening the junior football division. But now, Hayden Ingham is out. Hayden says, when he took over the Waimea Plains Football Group, the junior division of the Wakefield Football Club, he didn’t know what he was getting himself into. “The first season was crazy as I wasn’t sure what I was doing, then every season after that something big happened. It’s sure been interesting,” he reflects. From bushfires, droughts, and then the pandemic, it’s not been without its challenges. “The past season is the only season things have been normal,” he laughs. One of the changes Hayden has made to junior football is the introduction of

Update from Rachel Boyack MP Parliament has resumed this week, and I am back in Wellington working as part of the Labour Opposition. My job will be to hold the new Government to account for their promises and decisions, while continuing to ensure investment is made in critical Nelson projects, like our new Hospital, public and community housing, public transport and fixing the Richmond transport mess. Last week Labour Leader Chris Hipkins announced our portfolios for this term of Parliament, and I am pleased to be Labour’s Spokesperson for ACC, Arts, Culture and Heritage, and Animal Welfare. I am particularly delighted to be the Spokesperson for Arts, Culture and Heritage given that Nelson is one of New Zealand’s centres of excellence in the arts. As the holder of a Music Degree and former member of the New Zealand Youth Choir I’m excited to be able to put my skills in this area to good use for Nelson, and New Zealand. Already we are seeing the new Government take action that will harm New Zealanders. Repealing Labour’s world-leading smokefree legislation will undermine our actions to end the harm caused in our community from nicotine use. Health professionals across New Zealand are calling for the Government to reconsider their decision and prioritise the health of New Zealanders. We will also be pushing back hard on the Government’s planned repeal of Fair Pay Agreements. This week I am meeting Early Childhood Educators in Nelson to support them in their continued push for a Fair Pay Agreement. Our low- and middle-income earners deserve a better system for negotiating wage increases and I will continue to advocate strongly for decent wages for Nelson workers in Parliament.

skills that they can use to upskill the juniors. It’s been a big success and the senior guys have gotten a lot from it too,” he says. Numbers in the junior division have grown steadily, and Hayden says they now have around 85 kids, aged

4-17 years old, taking part. “It’s awesome to see,” he adds. With no kids of his own playing junior football and the club in a stable position, Hayden feels now is the time to hand his responsibilities on. “Instead of Wakefield Football and Waimea Plains, the club is in the process of merging into one entity which gets it all under the one branch, which is a massively positive step for all,” Hayden says. Hayden also explains that he was encouraged when four parents volunteered to take over his responsibilities, and who he says he has a lot of confidence in. “It’s great to have some parents who have skin in the junior games stepping up.” More time with his wife, who Hayden says has been very forgiving of the time he has put into the club over the past 20 years, and more weekends away are now on the cards.

Local History exploring our

Proudly brought to you by...

How Brightwater got its brand-new butter factory ROBYN PARKES An enthusiastic meeting of dairy farmers was held in Brightwater in January 1902 with a view to establishing a co-operative butter factory. Mr W. Lightband, as chairman, advocated co-operation and a system of close farming as the best means of bettering the condition of the farmers. The Department of Agriculture referenced that 400 cows were the lowest limit on which a factory might be started and £850 quoted as the cost of the buildings and plant. A proposal put forward for a co-operative factory was unanimously carried. Several farmers were elected to canvass the districts to ascertain the number of cows that would be guaranteed. By April, milk from 800-900 cows had been promised. The question of the central site was still up for discussion, with Appleby and Brightwater put forward. Creameries were suggested for sites in Appleby, Stoke, Wakefield and Wakapuaka provided each could guarantee a

minimum of 150 cows for three years. The Brightwater site was chosen, and land purchased from Mr R. Disher. It was centrally-situated, about 200 yards from the main road, midway between the Brightwater Hotel and the Wairoa Bridge and was close to the river, giving an unfailing supply of pure water and drainage facilities. In July 1902 Wilkins and Field Ltd were allocated the whole of the work of construction and equipment of the factory. Mr Thomas Roberts was the architect and Robertson Bros. the builders. The plant was installed under the immediate direction of Mr Shirley from the dairying branch of the Department of Agriculture. To avoid any possibility of damage to stock from floods, the floors of the storage and chilling rooms were raised 18 inches above ground level, and the ground floor concrete, while the wooden portions of the building rested on a base wall of concrete so that the woodwork would not come into contact with the water

Brightwater Butter Factory opening. Photo: Supplied. which constantly streamed over the floors. The 5th of November, 1902, was a red-letter day for Waimea as a large gathering of around 700 assembled to witness the opening of the factory. The factory was operating at the time so that guests were able to watch the complete operation of butter-making, tracing the milk from the vat to the separator, the cream emerging from its pipe and being auto-

matically carried to the cooling chamber, the skim milk running down its race to the tank outside, and ultimately, from ripened cream, the butter being made in the churn and worked in the immense machine adjoining. One of the new technologies installed to reduce labour were automatic self-tilting buckets. The cream entered one stationary bucket which, when full, tilted and emptied into a similar but

travelling bucket which conveyed cream to the elevator where it was then poured into cooling pipes. The milk suppliers’ carts drew up under cover, and the cans of milk were swung overhead by a derrick crane with the milk emptied into a weighing can. Each supplier was given a brass key regulating the quantity of skimmed milk to which he was entitled. The key fitted into a pump attached to the skimmed milk tank and thus the supplier pumped just the quantity of milk he had a right to remove, eliminating previous frustrations of time and delays in measuring out skimmed milk. The butter made, it was placed on a large circular revolving table, dished inward, over which were suspended two large wooden fluted rollers, which, revolving, worked the butter to the required degree. It was then made up into marketable form, and placed in a cool room where it was put into one pound pats, wrapped in the company’s printed wrappers, and placed in boxes ready for despatch to the retailer.

Give the gift of music this Christmas As the festive season approaches, Beggs MusicWorks is your one-stop destination for the best musical instrument deals, featuring top brands to make this Christmas truly harmonious. This year’s Christmas Festive catalogue from Beggs Musicworks features the best instrument deals from all of your favourite brands, boasting enticing bundles, product specials, and expertly selected top picks for the holiday season. Owner Tim Babbage says, “We have some great deals covering all of our musical instruments, including drumkits, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, saxophones, digital pianos, amps – everything from the best brands worldwide.” Tim assures customers that these deals are unbeatable, emphasising, “ I think it is much more exciting to open up a present than a voucher, and to be really upfront, we will not be doing a better price after Christmas! We are giving customers the very best prices around for these products, right now!” The array of instruments spans renowned brands like Yamaha, Fender, Ibanez, Tama, Behringer, and Squier, promising music enthusiasts the highest quality available. Hi-fi

enthusiasts will also find incredible deals on audio products, ensuring that everyone finds the perfect musical companion for the holiday season. For those looking to gift the magic of music, Beggs MusicWorks is offering exceptional deals on Korg digital pianos from $999 and Yamaha acoustic guitar packs with bags for just $299 – the perfect present for aspiring musicians. Tim Babbage underlines the enduring value of music as a gift that lasts forever, promoting creativity, stress relief, and a connection to the soul. “We have so many people come in and see us and say they used to play years ago, or they learnt an instrument when they were younger, and they stopped because of one thing or another. But the key thing they always say is that they regretted not carrying on with it.” Recognising the therapeutic effects of music, Tim encourages everyone to embrace the joy of music during the holidays and beyond. Beggs MusicWorks will be open on Christmas Eve for last-minute purchases, ensuring that the gift of music becomes a source of joy, inspiration, and well-being for all. Business Update. Adv.

Christmas is coming – ready or not! No-one can escape the intensity of Christmas advertising inviting us to spend up large. As well as organising Christmas celebrations, many are spring-cleaning, preserving produce, tidying up the garden and making summer holiday plans, and yet we’re also trying to reduce our spending and impact on the planet! Whew! No wonder we get a bit stressed! While CAB volunteers gift time, compassion, knowledge and resources all year, we’ve thought of a few creative ideas to help you enjoy your Christmas this year. Choosing a ‘home-made’ gift theme encourages everyone to use their skills. Sew something, make chutney, bake, make a birdhouse, write a poem or story, or design fancy

vouchers for vacuuming, baby-sitting, or dishwashing. Wander Op-shops for craft supplies, frames, wool, fabrics, tools, timber and odds and ends to use. Your purchases help both the charity and the planet. Larger families may choose to buy for just one designated person, or bring a gift for a central pile, which are then randomly distributed. Gift an experience. Sign up for a class you can do together. Create your own ‘Mystery Weekend’ or a Mystery picnic spot. Make 2023 the year of creating new Christmas traditions. Remember Christmas is about joy, peace and goodwill, not indigestion, a hangover, and bins bulging with packaging! CAB Nelson Tasman, TDC Richmond. NBM Asian Street Eats offers a perfect balance of easy dining options for all the family. The cafe offers a range of options from their bespoke single-serve buffet cart along with their delicious menu options including Thai soups, appetisers, signature dishes, boat noodles, curry, rice and noodle options and stir frys. “NBM is a change from our other restaurant experiences and is a cool new The NBM Asian Street Eats team - Bringing authentic Asian cuisine in a relaxed and easy dining experience, NBM Asian Street Eats on Hardy Street offers buffet-style lunch dining for all the family. spot for the whole family. It is casual dining, easy to walk-in and enjoy your experience. Just sit back and relax and let your taste buds travel,” says Bu-nga. “What we want to achieve at NBM is delicious, easy food at affordable prices. We want people to have an option for a quick and easy meal that is not too pricey. It is a destination place to bring the family for a delicious lunch.” Owning nine eateries across the Top of the South, with five in Nelson and four in Marlborough, the food journey began for Bu-nga and her late husband Nuttavut Rodsienglum over a decade ago. Both from rural provinces in Thailand, the couple met in Blenheim and quickly bonded over their shared love of delicious fresh

food. Inspired by their family recipes, the couple set out opening their first restaurant, Chai-Yo in Nelson, celebrating the flavours of Thailand, followed by Lemongrass’s fresh Thai and Asian fusions, before successively establishing both of these in the Marlborough region as well. After acquiring Bamboo Kitchen in Blenheim with a taste of Chinese, Thai and Japanese, the couple quickly established Chinese Asian fusion restaurant Miracle on Hardy Street. Ben & Maxxi soon followed, and they are excited to introduce a brandnew menu with delicious new dining options that follow a Chinese and Thai influence, and for the first time ever bring Yum-Cha and Dim-Sum options to Richmond diners.

With a focus on their native Thai food, Simply Asia’s brands offer authentic flavours and recipes learnt in their mothers’ kitchens and refined while working in restaurants around the world. “We pride ourselves on adapting our recipes to suit the Kiwi palate. All of Simply Asia’s cafés and restaurants are designed to feel homely and relaxed and all are family-friendly.” NBM Asian Street Eats is straightforward and doesn’t need to be fancy, she says, but is still delicious everyday eating. “The buffet is the point of difference. I believe it is the first in Nelson for a very long time. The NBM vision was always a dream for Nuttuvat, so this is a legacy to him with all of his favourite recipes, I feel

Ben & Maxxi’s brand-new menu brings exciting Asian fusion dining with Thai and Chinese flavours, and introduces Yum-Cha and Dim-Sum to Richmond.

Designed in Thailand especially by Bu-nga and brought back to NZ, they are a nod to her late husband and his hometown province in Thailand. “He had my back while I fronted everything. Every recipe served was created by Nuttavut so his presence will never go, people enjoy their meals because he made them delicious. His memory stays alive because of his food. “The last few years have been a challenge, especially when Nuttuvat passed away in early 2022 after a long illness. I have had many people ask me why I continue on with everything, why take so much on. My reply to them is, why can’t I? I know I can do it. I learnt from

when Nuttavut was unwell how much I can trust my team and how well they can run things. My sister Wanlapa has been a tremendous help. My team are like family and rallied around when things got hard. Because of the people I have around me, I realised I can do it.” The recipes are all Nuttuvats creations, says Bu-nga. “He was always happiest when he was in the kitchen, while I dealt with the more business side of things. Our eldest son now helps out and is working at one of the Blenheim sites, learning his way and helping me with raising his younger brother.” Complementing the business they built together, Bu-nga has also taken on a low-sugar, lowcarb sauce company, Jok'n'Al, making diabetic-friendly jams, sauces, toppings and condiments. Established by John and

Alison Howie in Marlborough over 20 years ago, Bu-Nga purchased the business in Nov, 2022 when John and Alison decided it was time to retire. Now distributed word-wide, Bu-nga says the product will be available both online and through the NBM Asian Street Eats location on Hardy Street. “When Nuttuvat first became ill we were forced to search for low-carb and low-sugar alternatives that are packed with flavour and the Jok'n'Al range aligns with this and our vision for the future of NBM. “John and Alison have developed a number of wonderful products that will be maintained alongside new product lines that are in the planning. We are slowly introducing the new branding, giving things a bit of a joosh up and phasing out the old label over time as we build the brand.”

Jet boats roar into charity JACK MALCOLM Imagine the sensation of the wind in your hair and the excitement of hurtling along the Waimea River at flat-out speeds. That’s exactly what a group of lucky children have in store for them as JetboatNZ Nelson Marlborough team up for their annual day with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nelson Tasman to provide the experience of a lifetime. It’s one of the most popular days out every year for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nelson Tasman, says programme coordinator Jo Lavington. “There’s a waitlist because it’s one of the most popular events.”

Gabby Green on the green at Greenacres. Photo: Anne Hardie.

Gabby at home on the green ANNE HARDIE Greenacres Golf Club is Gabby Green’s “second home”, but it still came as a surprise when the Special Olympics medal winner won not one, but two awards at club level. At Greenacres Golf Club’s women’s prize-giving, she won the nine-hole ringer award and the Irish Stableford which is based on the number of points over the season. It was also her 33rd birthday, so the awards added a nice touch to the day. “When my name got called

out, I was like ‘what’? I was shocked.” Gabby has been playing golf for 10 years now and admits Greenacres is her “second home” because she is out there at least four times a week between the Women’s 9-hole competition, twilight open, special Olympics training and separate coaching. She also manages to play football and basketball as well as do athletics and biking, but her mother Wendy Littlejohn says golf is her big passion. At last year’s Special Olympics National Summer Games in Hamilton

she won a gold medal for 9 holes with a caddy, who was her regular caddy and supporter, Diane Gardiner. “My big dream for Gabby when she left school was finding something she enjoyed doing and could participate in, along with everyone else. So it really is a dream come true. “The whole club is so welcoming; it is just fantastic. She knows everyone and that’s the real joy. The trophy is a side benefit. “I’m so proud of her and the acceptance within the community means a lot.”

Mike Glover, who formerly chaired the local jet boating club and organises the event, says it’s also one of their favourite events of the year. With 10-to-15 boats out on the water, he says the rides are even more exciting than commercial jet boating, in part because they aren’t carrying as much passenger weight. “It’s pretty exciting in the shallow water. It’s twisty and turny, up and down rapids, around sharp corners and skipping across a few stones. We have as much fun watching as they do in the rides.” Mike says every child gets at least two rides, which normally range from about eight-to-10 minutes each.

Nelson’s top sports men and women shine Sibling pair find top gear at awards night

Finn and Niamh Fisher-Black’s sibling rivalry drove them to improve but also showed them what’s possible. Photos: Supplied.

Finn Fisher-Black has bragging rights over his sister Niamh after the professional cycling pair of siblings swept the NZCT Nelson Sports and Recreation Awards on Friday night. The duo picked up Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, respectively, but Finn also received the most prestigious award of the evening, the Sportsperson of the Year. While he was not there to receive the silverware in person, he joked in a video message played at the awards night that beating his sister sweetened the win. “I’m especially happy to edge out my sister. I won’t let her forget about this one.” Niamh and Finn’s father, Jim Black, was in attendance to receive the award. He says it’s a special night for the family, “where it all started”. While he says they will always compete to oneup the other, sibling rivalry has also been a part of their success. “They inspire each other, push each other and see what they can achieve through each other.” The award comes after Finn’s stellar year on the UCI World Cycling Tour, claiming his first professional victory by winning the opening stage of the Giro di Sicilia in April. Finn also won the best young rider jersey in the same race after coming in 8th place on the final stage. Niamh has continued where she left off with another year of consistent results, having won the U23 World Championship last season. “Sorry, I can’t be there tonight. I’m still currently in Spain. It’s a real honour,” she said via video.

The Bowls Nelson Senior Ladies team were Team of the Year, but their motivations were stronger than anyone could have ever guessed. Photo: Evan Barnes/Shuttersport.

Overcoming adversity and a terminal diagnosis It was an emotional reception as the Bowls Nelson Senior Ladies won Team of the Year at the NZCT Nelson Sport and Recreation awards on Friday night. Unbeknownst to the judges, the team had battled adversity at almost every stage after team member Colleen Earl was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer earlier this year. While they had travelled with a reserve, Colleen didn’t back down to her condition and the medication’s side effects and was instrumental in bringing home the National Intercentre title. The team had decided Colleen would be the one to receive the award on the night if they won,

but she was too unwell to attend the awards evening and team coach Dave Edwards accepted it on her behalf. His speech about how the team was in disbelief at Colleen’s grit and determination to play and win for her teammates saw the crowd wiping away tears and one of the biggest applauses on the night. “We had a motto, #ForColl,” Dave says. Alongside the team’s Intercentre victory, they also saw regional success in winning the Higgins’s Shield Zone, as well as finishing first in the Super Sixes South Island Tournament and first in the Ann Burn Trophy.

At the business end of graduation... Gillan Harris (Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Wai, Ngāti Manuhiri) says the Bachelor of Commerce at NMIT Te Pūkenga has opened up several options for him. Originally from Christchurch Gillan, age 25, has been in Nelson for the past few years. He is due to graduate this year. “I have made plenty of good friends here,” he says. “It is easy to engage in the classroom because of the smaller numbers. You can have some proper discussions and the tutors have a lot of industry experience for context.” Gillan received the Nelson Pines Scholarship and the Johnston Association Scholarship for 2023, reducing his course-related costs by $6,000. As part of graduating with his Bachelor of Commerce, Gillan needs to complete a research project. He is looking into how entrepreneurs in Aotearoa incorporate Māori kaupapa in their businesses. Once he has finished his study, he intends to travel to Colombia on a Māori business programme which aims to increase the connections between other indigenous communities

across Asia Pacific. “I am looking forward to the opportunity,” he says. NMIT offers a variety of business programmes that provide well-recognised, practical, and relevant qualifications at all levels in business, marketing, management, and accounting. A Bachelor of Commerce allows ākonga (learners) to focus on one of several specialisms while gaining a range of valuable professional skills that support business relationships and innovative thinking. He won the Jameson Belt three times for being the most “scientific” boxer at the national championships and fought in the last 15 round professional fight in the country, a fight he won. The pair have been enshrined in Nelson’s sporting history and the award is just further recognition of the special feat the two men achieved.

Hayden Jones and James Matthews were in attendance to receive the Junior Sports Team of the Year on behalf of the Nelson U17 Boys Basketball team. Coached by Phil Jones, the team, consisting largely of Waimea College students, won first place at this year’s Aon U17 nationals.
