Nelson Tasman a ‘little island’ of sunshine ANNE HARDIE If you think the sea has been warmer so far this summer, you are right - it’s up to two degrees celsius warmer in some places around the Top of the South due to a long run of warm, sunny days through spring and early summer. NIWA meteorologist and forecaster Ben Noll says the Top of the South has been a localised hot spot in the last part of the year, and swimmers and surfers have benefited with sea temperatures warming up earlier to 18 degrees by mid-December, and even up to 19 degrees in some bays. “You seem to have been in your own little island in the Top of the South with your warm weather,” he says. “Compared with other regions, you’ve had some pretty good weather.” Ben says Nelson is tracking well to claim the title for the sunniest region in the country again, after losing the title for a couple of years. Though, the year is not quite over yet. While many other parts of the country have been tormented by dismal weather and storms through the year, the Top of the South has enjoyed a benign climate – apart from a tornado in
April. It was the only blip in the weather this year, ripping a destructive path through the Moutere hills during a weather event that also delivered thunderstorms across the region. Autumn ended up wetter than usual, but winter was drier and warmer. The region’s winter rainfall was between 50 and 79 per cent lower than normal and temperatures were above average. That continued through spring with between 60 and 80 per cent of the region’s normal rainfall, and again, slightly higher-than-average temperatures. Ben says the region is drier earlier, but a drought is not
a given. He says the region has been on “borrowed time” with its low rainfall and sunny weather through the year, as the forecasting shows there “could be the opportunity for some bigger rainfalls” in the early to midpart of 2024. It is too early to determine what that will look like, he says, but there may be relief on the horizon for farmers and growers.

Inspiring men with disabilities ELOISE MARTYN Every Tuesday, a group of 24 young men with intellectual disabilities arrive at Menzshed Waimea ready to get busy with their hands and minds making wooden creations. “It is the highlight of their week coming here,” says member Tony Cutten. “They enjoy working with the older men and doing something physical, as well as showing what they are capable of doing,” he says. The men have been attending for the past six years, and during the year they each work on three projects that can be taken home or gifted to someone of their choice upon completion. The sessions require parental and carer assistance as well as nine
members from the Menzshed. “Alan Kissell started it up years ago and we have kept it going as it has a great community aspect and is rewarding for all involved,” says Tony. Recently, some of the group stepped outside their comfort zone and assisted in collecting and splitting the wood from the wood-chopping competitions held at the Nelson A&P Show. The firewood has then been sold, with the profits raised going back into the Menzshed. Four-legged wooden potplant holders are the last project for 2023. Many of the young men are choosing to gift one to a family member on Christmas Day. The young men told the Waimea Weekly that they were “extremely proud and happy” with what they had created and achieved during the year.

Motocross rider Wills Harvey will base himself in Taupō next year to further his sport and some of his coaching will be paid for by the McGlashen Pharmacy Young Achiever Scholarship. The 17-year-old was awarded $1,000 from the annual scholarship and has serious goals for his motocross. He heads to Taupō with his long-time motocross mate Luke Heaphy and the pair plan to train daily, get coaching and compete around the country. “What’s got us so far is we’ve been able to train together, and we’ve pushed each other along.” Last year Wills won the New Zealand Junior National Championships in Taranaki on an 85cc bike and this year he rode a 125cc bike in the

He has been racing since he was seven years old, which was “a pretty late start really,” and travelling the country to races ever since. “I just always wanted to be a motocross rider and when I got my first bike at seven for Christmas, I never looked back. We used to live in Richmond and had a track on the front lawn.” Now he is sponsored by Murray Thorn Motorcycles in Motueka, gets support from Josh Coppins Racing (JCR) and has his sights set on eventually heading overseas and going pro, either with AMA Pro Racing in the United States or MXGP world tour. Andrew McGlashen says he was “inundated and over-
Piles of rubbish that were dumped and set alight near Tasman waterways has been labelled inconsiderate by Tasman District Council. The latest lot of runnish was found on the berm of the Waimea River between the Bartlett Rd and Blackbyre Rd entrances near Appleby. The assortment of items includes bottles, aluminium cans, furniture, used nappies and general household waste. Tyres were also found to have been set alight over the weekend of 15-17 December. “All in all, this is shocking Christmas spirit, people. Stop it. Stop it right now,” read a TDC statement. The rubbish costs the ratepayer and also takes contractors away from other more important jobs. “More importantly, it is simply an unacceptable way to treat our environment.” The cost to recycle a number of the items is zero - and in the case of aluminium

Rhian became New Zealand’s fastest-ever 100m sprinter under 14 with a time of 10.9 seconds at the recent New Zealand Secondary School Athletics. Hector has set nine New Zealand records for archery and was ranked fifth in the world at the World Archery Championships in the under 18-year-old category. A further $500 was sponsored by Richmond IT company Squarekicker to 15-year-old Joel Batchelar for computer programming and digital IT. Thirsty trees get water
Richmond’s edible walk will be well-watered through summer with help from Vailima Orchard. Roger Jones sought help from the community to water the trees he has planted alongside the Great Taste Trail in Richmond. Matthew Hoddy from Vailima Orchard offered unlimited access to water, fertiliser and assistance with the fruit trees. Roger bought a trailer and water tank which he has been using to collect water from a local stream, but it was not a long-term solution and now he will be able to collect water from the orchard.

Holiday workers keep the wheels turning ANNE HARDIE
Bo Hensley with Wakefield’s historical walking trail map. Photo: Anne Hardie.
A walking trail of Wakefield’s history
ANNE HARDIE Wakefield is one of the earliest European settlements in New Zealand and now it has a map for a self-guided walking trail around its historical buildings and sites, plus the stories behind them. A second map shows the wider Wakefield area to encourage visitors to spend a day exploring the activities on offer. Bo Hensley grew up in South Africa with a local trail the family used to follow and she thought it would be a good idea for Wakefield to have a trail as it has so much history. With the help of grants totalling $3,500 from the Tasman District Council and the Waimea South Community Facility Charitable Trust, an out-of-date Wakefield website was spruced up and that attracted businesses to advertise. With the website revamped, visitors can either pick up a map from various retailers in the village or use the website - www.wakefield.org.nz - which has the full history of each
building and site. Wakefield designer Rawinia Grieder produced the map, complete with drawings of the historical buildings, resulting in a walking trail of 16 buildings and sites. It includes the story of the former Temperance Hall and Johnson’s Saddlery (now Sweetbites) which was the site of a heated dispute over the boundary line. The dispute led to a local builder sawing four feet off the building and levering that portion to one side, where it later collapsed. The map also has the Baigent Sleeping Tree in the Wakefield Domain which is the tree that Edward Baigent slept under on his first night in Wakefield in 1843. Bo says many of the local people have stories that have been passed down through generations that add a unique character to Wakefield. Putting those stories together on a map enables locals and visitors to enjoy the history of the village. “I wanted something people could pick up and do on their own – give them some information so they can explore the village.”

The Christmas holiday period is time to sit back and relax for many Kiwis, but no-one told babies it was a holiday and Vicky Chamberlayne is one of the midwives working through the festive season. After 33 years as a midwife and even longer as a nurse, Vicky has been there for a few Christmas babies and she says it is always exciting when babies are delivered on the day. “It’s always very festive on the wards and it may be quiet or incredibly busy. It’s an unknown.” When she was 20 and a student nurse she was rostered to work on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in the emergency department and the sister initially declined her request to have some days off. “I cried because I wouldn’t see my family and in the end she relented and gave me a couple of days off.” She enjoyed nursing, but after having her first child decided she wanted to move into midwifery and look after women in labour. “A lot of people think it’s about the baby, but actually it’s more
about supporting the woman.” She estimates she has delivered thousands of babies over the years and still remembers the mothers who gave birth. “I meet people who say ‘do you remember delivering my baby?’ and I almost always do.” After more than three decades delivering babies, she is beginning to deliver babies from women she delivered many years ago. “I absolutely love midwifery.” Retirement looms, and though she is looking forward to it, Vicky says she will also miss being with women in labour. Births can also feature during the festive season for Alisha Langford, but it is more likely to be an animal baby. As a vet nurse for Town and Country Vet in Richmond, being on call through the Christmas holiday means triaging animals and contacting a vet if needed. The clinic is usually empty of animals recovering from surgery through the holiday period, but the unexpected can always happen. “We’ve had dogs with heat stroke on Christmas Day and it’s the time of year you don’t want your dogs eating anything they shouldn’t. It’s all those emergency things and
people don’t call you unless they have to.” Alisha grew up on a farm and was always around animals, so it was a natural progression to vet nurse where she says no two days are the same and the Christmas holiday period is no exception. Though the majority of people have a holiday on Christmas Day, Stats NZ figures show that about 23 per cent of employed people in the country worked on the public holiday between 2018 and 2022. Based on the Household Labour Force Survey, employees were less likely to work on Christmas Day than people who were employers, self-employed, or unpaid family workers – 22 per cent compared with 29 per cent. Some of the industries with the highest proportions of Christmas workers were in agriculture, forestry and fishing at 43 per cent; accommodation and food services 39 per cent; transport, postal and warehousing 32 per cent and retail trade 29 per cent. Meanwhile, those working in the education and training industry were least likely to work Christmas Day, at just nine per cent.

Flushed phones, concrete, and teddies cost Tasman $40k MAX FRETHEY
Local Democracy Reporter
Cellphones, concrete, and teddy bears are just some of the items that Tasman residents have flushed down the toilet this year. There have been at least 125 wastewater pump station blockages in Tasman this year, costing ratepayers more than $39,000 to clear. Every blockage was caused by items that shouldn’t be flushed down the toilet, including jeans, towels, t-shirts, socks, cellphones, mop heads, timber, lumps of concrete, rocks, plastic, cable ties, string, wire, sanitary products, and a teddy bear. However, the most common blockers of the pumps are disposable wipes. Only the three Ps – paper, pee, and poo – should be flushed. Once blocked, the pumps must be craned out, pulled apart, cleared, reassembled, and then reinstalled. About one third of the pump station blockages, 40, have occurred at the Jenkins pump station in Riwaka which only services around 50 properties. In contrast, the Brightwater Main pump station, which serves both the towns of Brightwater and Wakefield, had the next highest number of blockages at 18.
In third place is the Puketutu pump station, which covers large portions of Motueka, with 15 blockages. Tasman District Council has also historically had problems with clothing frequently blocking the Aranui-Higgs pump station in Māpua. In most cases, letter drops bring about a sharp decline in the number of blockages in the region’s pump stations, except for one. “Jenkins pump station catchment is the only catchment where publicity and letter drops have not worked long term,” says council’s waters and waste manager Mike Schruer. A letter drop to the Riwaka properties serviced by the station in December 2022 only stopped blockages for about 3 months. Flushing items that shouldn’t be flushed has the potential to damage the pumps, in addition to blocking them. Recently, a piece of timber too large for a typical private drain got stuck in the Goodman pump station, the largest in Tasman’s wastewater network. The Goodman station’s two pumps serve 95 per cent of Motueka. “It is critical both pumps are operational, especially during wet weather,” Mike says. “We don’t think the pump was dam-
aged in this instance, but if it was, it would cost thousands of dollars to repair.”

Enjoy your summer and stay safe around electricity Whether you are planning a holiday, hosting guests at your home, or tackling some DIY projects, taking some simple precautions can help ensure a safe and enjoyable summer.

Campgrounds set for bumper summer KATE RUSSELL
If you are expecting a full house when the family comes to visit, avoid running additional multi-plugs and extension cords, and plug any unused outlets with safety covers if small children are coming to stay. If you must use extension cords, always use an RCD (Residual Current Device), inspect the cords regularly, and make sure the leads are rated for outdoor use if using them outside. It is important to keep electronics and electrical leads far away from sprinklers and pools. Water and electricity don’t mix, so be sure to keep them apart. It is also important to remember that extension cords should not be used for a long-term or permanent solution. If you plan to refresh your outdoor area or garden, be mindful of overhead power lines when working with ladders or scaffolding to ensure they don’t come into contact. If you are digging or planting, take a moment to consider where underground power cables are located, and avoid planting large trees near overhead power lines. Flying toys like drones and kites are a lot of fun. However, if they accidentally fly into a substation or power lines, it can cause an electrical explosion, fire, or electrocution. This may not only damage your aircraft but can cause a power cut to you, your neighbours, or the greater community. If your flying toys, a ball or frisbee, become entangled in power lines or lands in one of our substations, please call 0800 508 100 for assistance. Our team is trained to enter these facilities safely and can help you retrieve any items.
Have fun and play safely this summer!
Camping hotspots around the region are set to be brimming with guests this summer, with some campgrounds being booked out earlier than usual. Quinney’s Bush Camp, south of Nelson, is one of the most popular spots for camping and this year is no exception for the 10-hectare adventure holiday park, with some exciting new additions to delight guests. “Our bookings are definitely up this year, as we were booked out for New Year’s about two months earlier than previous years,” says operations manager Andrew Quinney. Andrew says between Christmas and New Year is their busiest time, but they also see a significant number of bookings for Nelson Anniversary and Waitangi weekends. International bookings are also on the rise for the campground. “We mostly get bookings from fellow Kiwis, travelling from all over the country, however this year we have seen an increase in international guests.” Andrew says they have 70

powered sites and a large area for unpowered sites. They also have six cabins, four caravans, and eight camp-easy tents for hire. “The length of stay does vary, we get families who just stay for a couple of nights, however, some of our regulars stay up to two weeks.” Recently, the campground has completed two new BBQ kitchen areas. “This will make cooking and cleaning up a lot easier for our campers. “We have another cabin that was built and also renovated our other cabins.” A newly dug-out river swimming hole with a new riverslide is set to be a big feature this year too, especially on hot days. Andrew says that since 2020, when travelling far away wasn’t doable, their numbers increased immensely. “Since then, we have had a lot of new campers, many who have lived in Nelson for a while, but never heard of us. “So, it’s great to see people check out their own region as

there is so much to see and do here.” Bookings at Mārahau Beach Camp so far this season are up by 32 per cent compared to the same time last year, and forward bookings are also looking strong. Brendan Alborn, commercial director of Alborn Enterprises, a family business which includes the camp, says their busiest period is from a few days before Christmas up until the end of January. “The average stay is two nights. A lot of people base themselves in Mārahau and then do day trips into the Abel Tasman, either using our water taxis or doing a kayaking trip.” Across the year, the average split between domestic and international visitors is almost exactly 50 per cent. The camp has 55 powered sites, seven non-powered sites, five cabins, and a backpacker lodge that sleeps 15 people “We completely renovated the camp facilities and the backpacker lodge in 2016, so everything is still looking pretty sharp,” says Brendan.

Tackling the summer recycling surge ELISE VOLLWEILER Christmas is well-known as a time of excess. An abundance of food is eaten, extra beers are consumed, a plethora of toys and gadgets flow into households – and out flows the excess packaging. David Stephenson, who is the Tasman District Council’s team leader for stormwater, rivers and waste, says that at this time of year there is a higher “put out” rate for recycling, with paper, plastic and glass streams all increasing in volume. He says that the collection trucks need to empty more often, and the staff also have to navigate the complication of busier roads and kerbsides. “Extra visitor vehicles sometimes [make] bin access and vehicle movements more difficult for the collection drivers.” He describes a perfect yellow-lidded bin as containing only paper, cans and plastics stamped with 1, 2 or 5. The containers must be rinsed clean, and it helps if dimpled meat trays from those summer barbeques are given a tap to remove extra water. Paper, if it can be easily torn, is fine to go into the recycling bin, including wrapping paper that has the same texture as a brochure. David says that toy and present packaging is often an unlabelled plastic, PVC or EPS (expanded polystyrene), none of which is kerbside-recyclable. Lids cannot be processed through the roadside recycling scheme either, as they clog the machinery, and need to be binned instead. “It’s especially important to rinse your milk and cream bottles at this time of the year, and to make sure your pizza box is scraped free of any remaining cheese or sauce,”
David says. He also has a plea for caffeine lovers. “Please don’t put your coffee cup or any compostable packaging into your bins – we can’t recycle these!” A special request is made to the region’s flood of Canterbury visitors, who David wishes to remind that we have a separate crate for glass, and that it does not go in the yellow-top bin as they do in Christchurch. And when it comes to those blue glass bins, don’t fill them above the line, lest the contents spill onto the ground and break. “Our contractors are lifting up to 800 bins a day,” David says. Either keep some bottles aside for next time, purchase a second bin, or head directly to a Resource Recovery Centre to drop them off, free of charge and open every day except Christmas and New Year’s Day. Batteries are a no-no in both recycling and rubbish bins, due to fire risk. Again, an RRC is the place for these – no charge. And although it is the season to have wishes granted, please don’t be a “wish-cycler”. “Please don’t put things in the [recycling] bin that you wish were recyclable but aren’t,” David says. “As an industry we’re always looking for opportunities to recycle more, but at the moment if it’s not listed as recyclable on our website, then unfortunately it’s not.” The Tasman District’s recycling days will be one day later than normal in the two weeks after Christmas and into the New Year. “We’ll be giving all our staff a well-earned break, and so Monday collections will be on Tuesday, Tuesday on Wednesday and so on,” David explains.

Consumers get $80 back on power bill This month, over 43,000 electricity users will receive a financial boost thanks to an upcoming payout from the Network Tasman Trust (NTT). The Trust has announced that over $3.4million will be shared with eligible customers connected to the Network Tasman Limited (NTL) electricity distribution network over the upcoming weeks. These funds are distributed to providers annually by Network Tasman Trust itself, not the retail power supplier, and have been a welcome addition to many households over the years. “They can be hugely helpful for people, especially now as this money will go out just before Christmas,” says Gwenny Davis, chair of the Trust. Each customer will receive $80, which will be paid directly to them in the form of a credit on their next power bill. “To date, over 30 years of consumer-ownership, nearly $300 million has been kept in the hands of local people.”
Network Tasman Trust chair Gwenny Davis. Photo: Supplied. First established thirty years ago, the Trust’s accumulated funds come mostly from the sale of its energy business in 1998 and have grown significantly through prudent investing. The owners - all 43,000+ households connected to the network - are represented by the Trust.
That ownership rewards consumers with three payments every year back onto their power accounts. This year, Network Tasman Limited has paid out $13.7m in discounts in addition to the Trust distribution. Managed by six trustees, each elected trustee serves six-year terms, and
an election is held every three years by rotation. Next year, three trustee positions are up for renewal and elections will be held where all NTL consumers will be eligible for one vote per household on who they would like to see join the Trust team. Reflecting back upon their 30-
year anniversary, when the Waimea Electric Power Board become Network Tasman Limited, Gwenny says it was after a big community-wide debate that it was agreed that Network Tasman Ltd would be consumer-owned. “It could have gone out of the region entirely if a different decision had been made back in 1993.” One member of the Trust today is Ian Kearney, who was instrumental in setting up the Trust ownership model. In 2014 Ian received a NZ Order of Merit award and, in a following interview, he said that of all his career highlights he was most proud of holding out against Government pressure to turn Network Tasman into a public company. Ian said, “We had a big fight at the time, but it was the right decision.” Gwenny is also proud of the Company’s performance over the years. “Consumers in the Network Tasman region pay the lowest line charges in the country - sometimes as much as half that of other line companies.”
Homegrown Tapawera Just a thought... girl awarded Dux GORDON PREECE Rosa Cameron has lived in Tapawera’s rural surrounds all her life, and she was “very grateful and excited” to receive the local school’s highest honour. The 17-year-old says her strong connection with Tapawera Area School’s teachers and peers since she was five, combined with her drive to succeed, made receiving the accolade special. “I was very grateful and excited, it’s a huge thing for me to achieve [Dux] in my last year,” she says. “I think having the right people around you is really important for getting there, but having a personal internal drive to put the effort in is also very important. “I really enjoy the rural community… and that lifelong connection I’ve had with some people is one of the best parts about Tapawera.” Rosa says she’d achieved an NCEA Level 3 excellence endorsement, and had achieved first at Tapawera in English, maths, biology, and physical education. She has a slew of additional awards for her school services, including her striking volleyball performance on the

Rosa was also awarded the $6000 University of Otago Dux Scholarship, which she says will financially boost her sport and exercise science studies in the Edinburgh of the South next year. “As a first step I would like to gain my [Bachelor of Science], and after that I am not sure, I
think it’s likely that I will continue studying for longer, but I can’t say right now,” she says. “I think the courses [at the University of Otago] were what I wanted to do, I have a sister already there [Hazel Cameron] which is helpful for familiarity, and ultimately, it’s experiencing something new, as [Dunedin’s] quite a different region to where I’ve grown up.”
This week past we celebrated Christmas, The birth of Jesus Christ- Saviour to all the world. Many of us have spent many weeks buying gifts and preparing for a meal together with family. But for many others, Christmas was perhaps more of despair, where am I going to find the money for food for this Christmas, let alone gifts for children in the Whānau? Perhaps even a sense of hopelessness. Although Christmas for 2023 has passed, the need continues, the truth of Jesus Christ coming as a baby in the manger still remains. The Gift of Salvation is still available, still free for all who would come to God through Jesus Christ. This gift is timeless, we don’t have to wait for another Christmas to come, we can seek God at any time for he is the one who will give us hope when we need it, He is the one who can meet our every need, if we ask Him. The Salvation Army continues to serve and if you require help, please contact us. We are here in this community for you. As I write this, I am aware that by the time you are reading this,
my wife Denise and I have left Nelson for a new appointment with The Salvation Army in New Lynn, Auckland. Thank you for your welcome and hospitality over this past 4 years, and I do pray 2024 will be a great year for us all. I want to share this priestly blessing to you. Numbers 6:24-26 New Living Translation. “May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favour and give you his peace.” All the very best for 2024 Major Ken Smith | Pastor – Corps Officer

Speedway hosts festive annual Demolition Derby Crumpled Christmas paper makes way for crumpled cars when Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway has its annual festive season Demolition Derby. The December 30 meeting will have a 30-lap streetcar race before the crunch of metal ends the life of many cars before they get scrunched up and sent overseas to return as a dishwasher or washing machine. There will be many different cars, some with odd paint jobs, the windows, glass, and lights are removed. A roll bar and sidebar are necessary for safety purposes, and some have an X on the door to alert others that the driver’s door is out of bounds. The referees watch for any car that doesn’t touch another as it passes them. The golden rule is that you must hit a car as you pass it or the referees will send out a ‘Sheriff ’. There have been many different cars over the years, a limousine, an old Hertz, the big old Vauxhalls are very rare but every now and then a big old beast is found in the car corners of someone’s farm. The art of demolition derby is the ability to hit other cars and stop them while protecting your own car’s weakest parts. The tyres and radiator are important to keep intact - no water and the engine will overheat and seize, no tyres and you’re unable to move. Top South Media End of Year Sports Awards 2023 The 2024 Top South Media Sports Awards are a celebration of the moments and people that made the past 12 months another exciting year of local sport. From the sometimes overlooked to the sensational individuals, we remember the moments that make sport in Nelson and Tasman so special.
Supporters of the year While there’s a lot of honourable mentions in this list, the award for 2024 goes to Marist Rugby Football Club. Week in and week out, rain or shine, their supporters lined the Trafalgar Park stands and sidelines to cheer on the green machine. And, although it might be some overlysupportive parents who were making the most noise, they consistently have one of the loudest home crowds of any local sports team, especially when their women play.
Rookie of the Year The NBS Nelson Giants welcomed the next generation of a great basketballing family when Hayden Jones took the court for the first time this year. While he might still be at school, the young basketballer has made a big impression on the court as he wears the same number as his dad, Phill, for the Giants.
Comeback of the Year It was a long road of recovery for netball umpire and player Myron Elkington, but he’s back to full fitness after a freak injury while standing in for the Nelson Men’s team saw him taken out of action. Myron was named in the 2023 National Umpire Squad and was selected to umpire the final of the New Zealand Open Champs based on his prior performances at the competition.
Best Upset of the Year You could have written off FC Nelson’s unbeaten streak when they were down 2-1 with the game seemingly in extra time against the Suburbs Reserves. But, with time almost up at Guppy Park, two late lapses in concentration at the back gifted Sheehan Financial FC Nelson two penalties in as many minutes to give them the win.
Fan of the Year Skippy Whatarangi is such a super-fan of local sport that he was given a shout out by the Giant’s MC for his commitment. His eagerness to support every manner of sporting code with a custom made sign has made him a popular face amongst the fans and players alike at a lot of events around the region.
Underdog Victory Award This year the accolade is jointly awarded to Waimea College’s senior boys basketball team and Nayland College’s girl’s volleyball team (pictured). With both squads winning national titles (Nayland’s in Australia), they also outperformed expectations, and schools who are known for their dominance of the code, to lift their respective titles.
