Fire and Emergency NZ wants the people of Nelson, and visitors to the area to have a safe holiday period. Area manager Grant Haywood says there are a number of steps you can take to keep your home and yourself safe over the holiday period. “Whether you’re going to your family bach, a festival, your regular campsite or exploring Nelson for the first time, make sure you stay safe with fire. “If you’re camping - before you light a campfire or bonfire go to www.checkitsalright.nz to check Nelson’s fire danger and fire season. “Nelson is currently in a restricted season, meaning any outdoor fire needs a permit. “Don’t let off fireworks. One stray firework could easily start a wildfire in the hot and dry conditions we’re expecting this summer. “Make sure you have working smoke alarms in your bach or caravan. It can be easy to forget when it’s not your everyday home, but smoke alarms save lives. “If you’re bringing out the BBQ make sure it’s clean, there are no gas leaks and you’re using it in a well-ventilated area away from anything that could catch fire. “And just like at home – don’t drink and fry. “Follow these handy hints to stay safe over summer and make sure your holiday isn’t ruined by a devastating fire.”

Summer races filled with action-packed fun Each year, over 5000 people flock to the Nelson Harness Races Summer Festival at Richmond Park, which is coming up again on Friday 8 January and Sunday 10 January, 2021. “Join us for all the action and entertainment,” says Nelson Harness Racing Club president, Kristie Hill. “We have a really great couple of days lined up, with 10 harness races happening each day. It’s a community event, which is really well supported by trainers from Canterbury, the Coast and Marlborough. We like to make it a really special event for Nelson.” Canterbury Kidz Kartz Ponies

will be racing on the day. “It’s such a cool thing for the kids to be involved with.” On the Friday, The Nelson Pine Industry Summer Cup, which is run over 3000m, is a ‘fantastic’ event which achieved the fastest time last year. On Sunday, the Magic Mile is back, which includes all the pacing events over one mile. There were some amazing times last year including the Pine Industries Classic which was run in the slick time of 1.52.2. and with the track currently in tip top condition, this time could be lowered. “So, we’re pretty excited for this year’s contenders.”

It’s only $10 at the gate, free entry for children, entertainment includes bouncy castles, pony rides and giveaways and there’s great food and beverages available for purchase. “People can enter our ‘Fashion in the Field’ competition on the Sunday – we have some fabulous prizes on offer, so ‘come and strut your stuff on the catwalk.” Kristie encourages people to come and support the summer races to keep harness racing alive and well in the Top of the South.
