Delaware Bay access flares up Sara Hollyman Reporter

Delaware Bay tensions are boiling over with local iwi handing out trespass notices to bemused boaties after an agreement between

them failed to materialise. Nelson City Council have also acknowledged failings in how it communicated the issue after it was “missed from a task list”. Last weekend some recreational bay users were handed trespass notices on behalf of Te Huria

Matenga Wakapuaka Trust claiming that, under the Trespass Act 1980, it was an offence to enter. One user, who did not want to be named, says a woman stood in front of his vehicle when he was driving back to the road and gave him the trespass note.

“She said her bit about protecting the eco system and a bit about what they wanted to protect with the burial sites and stuff. “I understand them wanting to protect it, but it’s supposed to be everyone’s, so it does piss you off a bit. It’s a massive estuary so

surely that little bit that we use isn’t too bad.” The estuary has long been an unofficial launching area for sea-goers, as a safer alternative than nearby Cable Bay, but is

‘This is what democracy looks like’ A student led march saw hundreds of protesters storming Trafalgar St on Friday afternoon demanding action be taken to combat climate change. They were joined by babies in prams and elderly with walkers in an intergenerational show of solidarity. The third nationwide school Strike for Climate on Friday was hailed as the biggest with an estimated 170,000 people taking part around the country. Carrying signs, chanting in unison and marching on council, the message was hard to ignore as shops and schools closed their doors to partake in the protest. The march ended at the doors of Nelson Council where Rachel Reese received a letter on behalf of the city calling on the government to act. Photo: Jonty Dine.

also an ecological and culturally significant site for local iwi. Ownership of the estuary has been in dispute for years, with Te Huria Matenga Wakapuaka Trust gaining ownership title to the land through the Maori Land Court in 1998 but losing it again to the Crown in a Court of Appeal decision. It was then taken to the Supreme Court which said it could not take a different view from the Court of Appeal and denied a second appeal. For the last few years both iwi and a group set up on behalf of recreational users have been working with Nelson City Council to try and reach an agreement that would allow preservation of the site while still leaving access for recreational

users. Council’s group manager environmental management Clare Barton says the estuary is subject to the Resource Management Act which states that vehicles cannot be driven on an estuary. “Yes, to be fair, it has been used previously, but the numbers of boaties using it has substantially increased. Where it was two or three, it’s now a significant number who are using it and iwi remain very concerned about the significance of the area.” Last year an agreement was reached between the parties to prepare a resource consent that would temporarily allow for a defined access route for the period of 1-2 years as a trial, starting in the 2019/20 summer season. However, after the draft was

prepared, Clare says iwi members were feeling uncomfortable with it, so council agreed the consent would not be lodged for approval. Clare says, after this decision was made the task of informing the recreational users that the consent was not proceeding was not followed through as it was “missed from an officer’s task list”. Delaware Bay resident Peter Ruffell, on behalf of the recreation advisory group, says they are disappointed that it’s come to this. “We’ve been working with council and putting a lot of time and effort into coming up with a solution to keep everyone happy. “We wanted the area to be marked out, and as far as we knew that’s what was going to happen, we didn’t hear any different. We

would like to think that people won’t be fooled into thinking that recreational users are causing a lot of damage, which is simply not true,” says Peter. A police spokesperson says they have offered advice to council on the validity of the trespass notices. “The area of land in question is currently in disputed ownership, and as such there is no one person or organisation that would be officially permitted to issue a trespass relating to that land.” Clare says council do need to be able to work out what they are going to do going forward and are in the process of setting up meetings with both iwi and recreational users. A spokesperson for Te Huria Matenga Wakapuaka Trust was unable to be contacted.

Jetstar to pull out of Nelson Sara Hollyman A local family who have used Jetstar to fly in and out of Nelson about 30 times are frustrated with the airline’s proposal to pull out of the regions. Anna Chitty and her family fly overseas regularly and she says with international flight costs being high, they try to make use of cheap domestic flights wherever possible. She says she has experienced numerous flight cancellations and mechanical issues with Air New Zealand and is frustrated they are now “stuck with them” after barely ever having an issue with Jetstar. Jetstar’s CEO Gareth Evans says the proposal to withdraw the airline’s regional flying was based on flights continuing to be loss-making, combined with higher costs and a softening of the regional travel market. Jetstar plans to end flights to Nelson, Napier, New Plymouth and Palmerston North after November 30. Air New Zealand was quick to announce that they would offer Jetstar customers discount fares for their existing bookings, saying affected customers would be able to purchase an Air New Zealand seat-only fare for the same route on the same day (schedule permitting) for no more than $50 each way. However, Anna says it hasn’t been that easy trying to rebook

Jetstar is proposing pulling out of Nelson after November 30. Photo: File. her flights for December/January. “Jetstar have been great processing the refund and they’ve been in touch to let me know the refund will be in my account within 10 working days. I’m happy with that. “The Jetstar flights cost me $270 for 5 people and 4 pieces of luggage. I now had to rebook with Air NZ for $525 and that’s only with 3 pieces of luggage. She says she first contacted Air New Zealand about their offer on Wednesday but as of Monday still hadn’t had a response “I’ve also rung the call centre and they said they can’t do anything about this offer... I haven’t even received an email saying that my request will be processed, and someone will be in touch. Nelson Airport CEO Rob Evans says Jetstar’s decision was a “disappointing” day for Nelson and the New Zealand’s aviation industry generally. “Along with our other airlines,

Jetstar brought a competitive edge to air links in regional centres, which gave a new type of passenger the opportunity to fly for the first time.” Jetstar first began flying to Nelson in December 2015 and have since carried almost 680,000 passengers in and out of the region. Rob says they captured around 17 per cent of the market share for Nelson which, in turn, had a positive effect on Air New Zealand who increased capacity and stimulated travel to our region. He expected a proportion of that market will transfer to either Air New Zealand or Sounds Air for its Wellington customers. He says the decision does not affect the new terminal at Nelson Airport, which will open fully in October, as the design was already well advanced and agreed with existing airlines prior to the arrival of Jetstar in 2015.

Weekly’s guide to how to vote With just over one week left until election day and voting forms now in letterboxes, it’s time to start thinking about casting your vote if you haven’t already. Kate Russell runs you through what to do (if you don’t know what to do). If you are enrolled to vote, you should have already received your voting papers in the mail. They need to be with the returning officer by midday on October 12 - so if you’re posting them back, try to get them in the mail on or before October 5, to make sure there’s enough time. If you’re cutting it fine, you can drop them off to one of the ballot boxes located at the Nelson City Council customer service centre or at the Elma Turner/Stoke/Nightingale libraries. In Nelson, we are voting for 12 councillors at large, one mayor and seven members for our district health board. The council uses the First Past the Post (FPP) system in which you just tick the candidate/s you prefer. You don’t need to choose 12 candidates – only ones you really want to see elected. The DHB, however, uses the Single Transferable Vote (STV) method. It may sound confusing, but it’s easy. You just rank the candidates in order from your favourite to least favourite with numbers - e.g., put a one next to the candidate you most want to win, a two next to your next favourite, a three for the next person and so on. You don’t have to rank all of them. If you are not enrolled to vote - fear not,

Voting forms need to be received by October 12, so if you are posting them, try to get them in the mail early. Photo: Kate Russell. it’s not too late. You can still enrol any time up until 11 October at the address you have lived at for at least one month. Once you have enrolled you can apply for a Special Vote. Application forms for enrolments are available from all NZ Post outlets, libraries and the council, or you can do it online at www.elections.org.nz. You can then request a Special Vote by contacting the council on (03) 546 0200 or elections@ncc.govt.nz You can also cast a Special Vote if you are away during the voting period, are on the Unpublished Roll, if you didn’t receive your voting papers by 27 September or

if you spoil your voting paper. Once completed, you can post your Special Vote in the envelope provided or drop it into one of ballot boxes mentioned above. Also remember, if you don’t live in Nelson but own a property within the area, you can apply to go on the ratepayer roll. You can then vote in the area where you pay rates as well as the area where you live. To apply, contact the electoral officer for the local council area where you pay rates but do not live. They will send you a form to complete, sign and return so they can check you’re eligible.

Police remembered: Police officers who died in the line of duty have been remembered at a ceremony at the Nelson station on Friday. Tasman Police District Commander superintendent Mike Johnson said those who had been killed were carrying out the duties police asks its men and women to carry out every day. He said the March 15 Christchurch attacks, where 51 people were killed, changed the landscape of police in New Zealand. The names of all the policeman who died while on duty were read out, with Archdeacon Harvey Ruru closing the ceremony with a blessing.

Transport on show: The Transport Show this weekend at Higgins Heritage Park promises to be filled with vintage, classic, military and modern examples of our transportation history. There will be items like, a 1942 Willys G military jeep and other old vehicles will be available for kid’s rides and demonstrations. The visitors of the ‘Transport Show’ will also be able to enjoy some Irish music and dancing, food, drinks, raffles, silent auction and craft stalls. The entrance is from 10am to 4pm and costs $5 for adults, $2 for children and $10 for the whole family.

Cyber security: Many people feel that a cyberattack won’t happen to them but there are plenty of people out there who would love to get their hands on your personal information. That’s the message as part of Cyber Smart week – running from October 14-18. As part of the week there will be a free information session about the things that people can do to keep themselves cyber safe. The session is at Annesbrook Church on October 14 at 10am.

New regional banking Record asking hub heading for Stoke prices for Nelson Staff Reporter

Nelson is set to get a major banking boost, with the introduction of a new Smart ATM hub in Stoke. The Government, in partnership with the New Zealand Bankers Association, has selected Nelson, and more importantly Stoke, as one of four pilot hubs in New Zealand. The non-branded hub will provide an area for customers of any bank to do their banking

and get staff assistance if required. The participating banks are Kiwibank, BNZ, TSB, ANZ, ASB and Westpac. Mayor Rachel Reese says that the concept will be hugely beneficial for the people of Stoke. “We are absolutely delighted to be selected as one of the pilot regional banking hubs. We really appreciate the support of the Government to help us fill the gap in face-to-face banking services, in the fastest growing

suburb in Nelson.” she says. “I know the people of Stoke will embrace this new concept, and having staff to directly help will be welcomed by our diverse community.” Last year Kiwibank announced its intention to withdraw from Stoke and the NZ Post store. In its place, Hardy Street Pharmacy will be opening a new store this month within the current NZ Post location and will take over operating the postal services in the area.

Nelson and Bays registered record asking price highs in September, according to realestate.co.nz’s latest statistics. The record average asking price in the region is now $692,339 the highest since realestate.co.nz records began in 2007 and up four per cent from August. Regional New Zealand dominated the property market during the month with Gisborne, Bay of Plenty, Manawatu/ Whanganui and Northland also registering record house price highs.“These

are all regions with lifestyle appeal,” says realestate.co.nz spokesperson Vanessa Taylor. “They all touch the coast, you can holiday or work in these regions and for people looking to leave the hustle bustle of the big cities for a more balanced lifestyle, they’re all good options.” Nelson also registered an increase in new listings in September compared with the same time last year, with 213 new listings coming to the market - a 10.4 per cent increase on 2018.

Visitors of the Christ Church Cathedral had the chance to experience a special service on Sunday morning when they were presented by the voices of the New Zealand Male Choir performing pieces from their repertoire. The presentation was part of the celebrations of the choir’s 20th anniversary. Random acts of kindness for Stoke Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The youth of Stoke are aiming to bridge the gap between young and old by spreading the love in the community. Whanake Youth’s afterschool group has been running a series of ‘random acts of kindness’ for term three with a goal to empower young people to become more involved in their community. NMIT student social worker

Lauren Penney, who is on placement at Whanake Youth, is organising the project. She says their first gesture of making chocolate crackle treats and leaving them on the doorsteps of local businesses was a big hit. “Everyone came back with thank you notes or came in personally to thank us,” she says. They also baked and decorated cupcakes for the SPCA’s Cupcake Day and sold them in the community. Altogether they raised more

than $100 for the Nelson centre. Making rags from old clothing for Helping Families Nelson was another gesture, and their final random act of kindness was creating artwork on the windows of the Stoke Library on Monday morning. “We’re trying to show Stoke that we’re doing positive things in the community,” says Lauren. “The young people came up with all the ideas and spent about a month planning what

they wanted to do. It’s been a good way for them to show off their talents and skills.” Jacob Wealleans, 14, says the best thing about the series was “meeting new people in the community”. Based in Strawbridge Square, Whanake Youth is a charity aiming to support youth in the region with their journey through adolescence into adulthood. They run after-school groups every Wednesday afternoon for youth aged between 13 and 25.

Cardboard cut-outs of council candidates have been invading our daily commute for weeks now, but which ones are illegal and if so, what can be done about it? Nelson City Council have so far received 30 complaints about election signs ranging from candidates having too many signs to having lettering which is too small. “We are reluctant to provide specific details of complaints as many of the signs complained about are still under investigation and likely to be perfectly legal,” says a council spokesperson. “There have been a number of non-compliant signs where lettering is below size, sign size is too big, there are too many signs (more than 10 per candidate) and signs are placed on a road reserve.” The spokesperson says all candidates are made aware of the sign requirements with rules contained in the Nelson Resource Management Plan. They say last election more than 50 hours of officer time was spent following up and managing election sign issues. Council says any person that breaches a plan rule is committing an offence against the Resource Management Act 1991. The punishments for breaching the RMA can be formal or informal and can include informal education options, infringement or abatement notices, enforcement orders and/or prosecution. Non-complaint signs on council-controlled land can be removed by council officers without notice.

Salisbury School farewells principal Kate Russell

Salisbury School principal Brenda Ellis has stepped down from her role after nine years, but the board says they are in a good place to move forward. Brenda was farewelled at the end of last week, as she leaves Nelson to take up a new Wellington-based job.

Chair of the school’s board of trustees Emma Thompson says Brenda’s passion, commitment and superb leadership skills have navigated the school through some impressive achievements and some difficult times. “We’re really proud of what Salisbury has achieved in recent years, and much of this can be

attributed to Brenda’s guidance and dedication to the school and its students,” she says. “Most recently, we achieved ERO’s highest rating, which is undoubtedly due to Brenda’s leadership. Brenda says she has loved her time at the helm. “I will look back with fondness and pride at all we have achieved

together in our determination to meet the needs of vulnerable girls with complex needs.” Using her extensive experience in learning support, Brenda is taking up a role as an education consultant and learning support specialist for Evaluation Associates in Wellington. Emma says an extensive recruitment process is now

underway for a new principal, with the goal to appoint someone to start the new school year in 2020. In the meantime, Alison McAlpine has been appointed as the interim principal. “We’re delighted that Alison has agreed to step into the role until a permanent appointee is in place,” she says.

Suter celebrates birthday To celebrate 120 years since it opened, the Suter Art Gallery is having a birthday party this weekend. The public open day is on this Saturday, 5 October from 10.30am and visitors will be served birthday cake and cups of tea. There are also limited places on a revealing ‘behind the scenes’ tour, which departs at midday for only $20 per person or $15 for Friends of The Suter. And, as a birthday gift to art lovers, at 2pm there will be some feature floor from the Suter’s curator, educator and director. The Suter Memorial Art Gallery was opened in 1899

as a memorial to the second Bishop of Nelson, Andrew Burn Suter. Bishop Suter and his wife Amelia travelled to Nelson in 1867 and in addition to his official duties, the Bishop established the Bishopdale Sketching Club, now the Nelson Suter Arts Society. It is three years since The Suter Art Gallery reopened after an extensive $12 million redevelopment project, which shows the beautiful early architectural features while still incorporating 21st century elements. New galleries were added, along with an education room and enhanced storage facilities and staff work areas.

All Blacks tribute mown into grass Jonty Dine With the All Blacks chasing a record third successive World Cup title in Japan, a Nelson school caretaker wanted to send a message of support to the side 10,000km away. Roger Thorn was inspired to mow the message during an early morning walk home following the All Blacks’ 23-13 win over the Springboks in their opening game of pool play.

FLOWER & GARDEN FESTIVAL

Sunday 6 October 11am –  3pm

“I had to walk past the school to get home, I looked at the big open field and thought that I should get a mower out.” Roger then went down to STIHL Shop and told his friend Isaac about the idea, to mow “All Blacks” in giant letters on the field of the school. “He lent me a whizz-bang, walk-behind, selfpropelled jobby and away I went.” Roger carved out his creation in less than four hours. “It took longer to mark it out than mow it out because there is quite a bit of math involved.” Though the caretaker has now given himself an extra hour of work every week to mow over it until the All Blacks win or are eliminated, he is happy to continue doing it. “If it went for three months, I’d keep going.” Should the team go back to back-to-back in Japan, Roger says he will celebrate with the ultimate symbol of the All Blacks. “If we take the thing out, i’ll do a fern.” Though the design will be more intricate and complicated, Roger welcomes the challenge. “Every year I mow an eight lane, 400m track for school athletics, so having had four years of practice doing that, I’m confident I can do it.

A new state of the art rescue boat for the Nelson Volunteer Coastguard is one giant step closer with a $100,000 grant from the Lion Foundation. “Just how important this funding is can be answered by a simple statement from someone we rescued not so long ago…. ‘I knew you were coming so we just hung on’,” says president of Coastguard Nelson, Peter Kara. He says the current rescue vessel is too small, 17-years-old and needs

considerable maintenance. The total cost of the new rescue boat is $1.3m. “Thanks to the Lion Foundation this grant will help us build our new rescue vessel for the Nelson Tasman community.” He says that this vessel, together with its volunteers, will serve its community by bringing people home to their families. Peter says the comments made by the rescued person was a powerful reminder just how important Coastguard is to its community and that the grant has made it possible for Coastguard Nelson to

continue to be there when needed. Member of the Lion Foundation regional grants committee, Doug Paulin, says the Lion Foundation is proud to support the great work that Nelson Coastguard do. “They cover one of the largest geographical areas in New Zealand and operate in some of the most challenging sea conditions, with increasing demands for their services.” The Lion Foundation provides grants totalling over $35m each year to a wide range of valuable community projects throughout New Zealand.

Alison died in May 2018, aged only 51, but Simon’s work to keep her memory alive is going strong with the delivery of a sculpture he did several years ago. The retired stonemason sculpted a horse’s head several years ago for a fundraiser organised by the local chapter of BNI. Now it sits in the Nelson Tasman Hospice’s foyer. However, that is only part of Simon’s efforts. Come Sunday, he will be flying out to the Himalaya to climb to Everest Base Camp with his son. The trip is a way to raise money for the hospice. “The past year has been a struggle,” says Simon. “It hasn’t been easy.” But about nine months ago, his son Dean texted him asking if he wanted to climb to Everest

Base Camp. “We can do it in memory of mum,” Dean said. Simon knew it was his son’s way of keeping his dad focused and moving forward, but he thought it would be a great experience, and one that Alison would have approved of. “She was something else,” Simon says. “She was so strong.” He says that the challenge to climb to base camp felt right in that it would be out of his comfort zone. “We wanted to do something that would do that, but we have the choice. There are rooms of people in hospice who don’t have a choice. So, if we can raise money to make their time a bit easier then it makes sense.” Simon has been preparing for the trip by doing expeditions like climbing Mt Robert and the Tongariro Crossing. He has also been working out in altitude chambers to make sure he can handle the height of the seven day up, five day down journey. He has also raised $12,000 for the cause. “Alison was the catalyst for that. She was the inspiration.” Simon says the final months

Brothers Te Kani and Sayian Gordon were unaware their dad signed them up for a Nelson Weekly paper run earlier this year - but it turns out they are pretty good at it. The Nelson Intermediate School students were nominated as the newspaper’s deliverers of the month by Tahunanui readers John and Kaye Young. “They saw we were indisposed on two occasions and brought the paper right to our door with cheerful chat and greetings. Nice boy, great service,” they wrote to the Weekly. Te Kani, 12 and Sayian, 11, both do runs in central Tahunanui around the Beach Rd and school area. The process begins on Wednesdays

after school where the boys get their hands “very black” folding the papers, which takes them between 45 minutes to one hour. They then spend about two hours out delivering, rain or shine, and are home by dark. And although they both have the same amount of papers to deliver, Te Kani’s area is a bit more spread out. “I usually finish first and then come and help him finish,” says Sayian. The boys say they are enjoying earning some money. “Each week we put five dollars into savings and then we can spend the rest,” says Sayian. For their efforts, the boys both received a movie voucher for Nelson’s State Cinema. If you would like to nominate your Nelson Weekly deliverer, email kate@nelsonweekly. co.nz

Your Voice

Congratulations: Charles, Andrew and team, The “Nelson Weekly” edition this week (25 September) has achieved a new highlevel standard in community newspaper publishing. Your coverage of over 35 important and interesting community stories, apart from the to-be-expected electioneering advertising, catered for possibly the most diverse range of Nelson readers possible. You have shown what a small team of committed and professional staff can achieve and by their efforts they have set the bar high in what is always a tough time-restraint environment. Congratulations. Keep it up! Neville Male

Jessica Smith letter: Hi, just like to add to Doris Mahrla’s letter to Jessica: Thanks to Doris for sticking up for the people who also feel that showing the natural form on the front page of a beautiful Nelson paper is FINE!! I was quite shocked what she wrote about the pic!! We were born naked and should love our kids being naked and not be ashamed of their body!! Meagan D Southern Link: Believe it or not, 1954 saw the government confiscate land in Beatsons Rd for the Southern Link. New Zealand’s population was 2.1 million - today it is 4.9. To this point in our history we have greatly benefited from the foresight and vision of those who came before us and built the roads and streets that we

editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz facebook.com/nelsonweekly www.nelsonweekly.co.nz all need. The first essential for any community to function efficiently is good roading which the next council must acknowledge. Nelson city will become even more dysfunctional if practical thinking is not applied to the obvious need for modern safe roading. The Southern Link is the only solution to sensible traffic flows. It must be constructed in a modern, safe manner, elevated from Victory School to the Moller Fountain (Auckland Point), incorporating all noise mitigating measures as is being installed globally including Auckland. Elevating the road will eliminate the concerns of the Victory community and would allow commercial operators in the area to get on with life with little disruption. The following quote probably explains why procrastination con-

tinually occurs around our council table. It reads, “Once again our indecision has stopped us making mistakes”. Modern vital roading would not be a mistake. Kerry C Neal Nelson Weekly debate heats up mayoral election: I was pretty disappointed at some of the behaviours. Shouting down others is not respectful and I'm not sure such people are team players. I've spent quite some time at candidates’ meetings etc, observing very closely how candidates interact with each other. Especially mayoral candidates with council candidates. I'm looking for a mayor who's a team player and will lead the council in support of council decisions. I've changed my mind three times on who I'll vote for as mayor. But I'm tending towards one candidate who will

Nelson Matters Jetstar’s decision to end its regional services from November 30 to centres like Nelson is a concerning blow to our local economy. My worry is that reduced competition will see airfares rise. We should not underestimate how important affordable air links are for Nelson. We are a geographically isolated region but our well located airport and frequent flights has given us a competitive advantage. We have much better air services than any other city of our size. The benefits have not just been for Nelsonians own private travel. The competitive airfares have helped make us an attractive

destination for our $400 million a year tourism sector. The quality of air services has also made Nelson a hub for hundreds of small professional service businesses that work all over New Zealand and contribute much to our local economy. Jetstar’s demise can be put down to three factors. These regional services started out in 2014 as part of the intense Trans-Tasman rivalry between Air NZ and Qantas. These airlines entered into a code share agreement last year reducing the flow of passengers from Jetstar’s owner, Qantas. Secondly, tourism and the NZ economy is slowing due to poor Govern-

ment policy and global uncertainty. The third contributor has been the rise in the cost of fuel. Nelson has been through this competitive cycle before in air services. We had cut throat competition between Origin Pacific and Air NZ from 1997 to 2006 that saw unsustainable low airfares. Costs crept up until Jetstar re-entered the market in 2014. Cut price fares like recent Jetstar specials of $30 could never last. Nelson needs stable, affordable fares that can be sustained. I am a loyalist to Air NZ as it way out-classes most international airlines for service and innovation. The local Air NZ airport

staff and flight crew give excellent service. Air NZ showed the right culture in offering to pick up displaced Jetstar bookings. I encourage Air NZ to be extra careful with its pricing and service standards with the return to having a near monopoly in Nelson. Any arrogance will result in a backlash from customers and its majority shareholder, the NZ public. I will not hesitate to lodge a Commerce Commission complaint if I see evidence of price gouging. We are fortunate, unlike other centres losing Jetstar, to have a check on Air NZ with Sounds Air. It is a good service that I use when the times suit.

remain nameless for now. And I'm definitely looking for younger blood on council so young people get input into the future of Nelson. Dennis Goodman

We need to consciously choose to give Sounds Air a share of our business so as to keep some competitive pressure on Air NZ. I am also hopeful that Origin may re-enter the market. This month Nelson’s new airport terminal will be completed. This is a project I have long advocated for and of which our Airport Company has done a superb job of delivering. Despite the loss of Jetstar, I remain confident about the future of Nelson’s aviation industry and its continued growth. My job will be to help keep Nelson’s air services affordable and competitive. Sophia turns heads with fashion move Jonty Dine

Sophia Malthus says everyone has the right to express themselves through fashion, able-bodied or not. The 22-year-old tetraplegic has not let her wheelchair stop her from strutting her stuff on the catwalk and hopes to pave the way for others who may not fit the traditional model mold. The former Nelson College for Girls student was left paralysed after a horse-riding accident in 2016. Sophia suffered a C5 spinal cord injury leaving her with minimal movement below the neck. But the incident hasn’t stopped her from breaking down barriers, as she recently modelled at New Zealand Fashion Week. Sophia describes her appearance as a symbol of progression. “There were so many different models, disabilities, races sizes, there’s no reason you can’t be a model now.” Sophia says she never intended to enter the world of fashion. “My friend, who has cerebral palsy, decided to start a fashion platform where the detailing of clothes is tailored for those with disabilities and where people with special needs can purchase them.” She says a lot of people in wheelchairs think they can’t be models so she hopes they look at her and realise they can be. “I have never wanted to be a model

Sophia Malthus recently made her modelling debut at New Zealand Fashion Week. Photo: Sauce Magazine but if it’s something that I can do to help progress things for people with disabilities then it’s nice to know that you’re helping people.” Sophia describes the experience as the crews installed ramps to help her to and from the catwalk. “It was so nice because everyone involved wanted to learn how they can make the show accessible for me.” She says, while ‘the whole modelling thing’ is not really what she cares about, if it helps empower others, she will continue to do it. “People with disabilities should be able to express themselves in a way everyone else can.”

Cannabis talk ahead of election Locally Owned and Operated

Jonty Dine

With the country set to vote on a cannabis referendum next year, Green MP Chloe Swarbrick was in town on Saturday to drum up support for legalization of the controversial drug. From recreational to medicinal, scores of cannabis users attended the meeting at the Tahunanui Community Centre to listen to one of the frontline soldiers in the battle for legalisation.

Chloe Swarbrick

Chloe says the 2020 referendum is a massive opportunity for the country. “This vote is for the people, if you want to see 4000 less people prosecuted very year you need to vote.” Chloe also cited the vast number of people with illness forced to visit their local “tinnie shop” in order to alleviate their pain. She says much of the misconceptions around the drug comes down to a lack of

Double show fun for holidays Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Two classic youth musicals are touching down in Nelson just in time for the school holidays. More than 100 members of the Nelson Youth Theatre Company are performing Disney’s High School Musical and Peter Pan Jr at the Theatre Royal, starting this week. Director Richard Carruthers says High School Musical is based on the first movie of the same title. “It’s the same story line, same songs, with big dancing, a big chorus and a heartfelt love story. Think of Grease, but Disney-fied.”

He says at first, he wasn’t sure it would be a popular option with cast members, but he was wrong. “Everyone screamed and shouted for five minutes when I suggested it. It’s very exciting for the teens and I’ve also had primary school children asking to participate, which is encouraging.” Running for two hours, it will feature the hit songs ‘Start of Something New’, ‘Stick to the Status Quo’ and ‘We’re All in This Together’. “It has a beautiful energy and people will be thrilled to watch it.” Peter Pan Jr features more of the younger members of the company and follows the classic storyline that everyone knows - all wrapped up in a one-hour package.

In the story, Peter and his fairy sidekick, Tinkerbell visit the nursery of the Darling children one night and, with a sprinkle of pixie dust, they begin a magical journey across the stars. They come face to face with a ticking crocodile, a fierce Indian tribe, a band of bungling pirates and, of course, the villainous Captain Hook. “There will be some exciting touches, and people will have to come along to see if Peter Pan will actually fly,” says Richard. Both shows have a double cast and are suitable for the whole family, Richard says. High School Musical runs from 4 - 12 October and Peter Pan Jr runs from 7 - 12 October. Tickets are available from

2019 LOCAL ELECTIONS 20 September to 12 October -

The 2019 local body elections are open from September 20 to October 12, with the winners to be declared on Saturday, October 12. Some of you would have attended the various election events around the region but the vast majority will be reading about which candidates you want to vote for either in this paper or in your voting packs, which is why we’ve put together this election special. It’s important to get this right because these are the people who decide whether to invest

in new facilities, how to spend your rates and what happens with important issues like roads, parks, water, and many, many others. Only 52.12 per cent of people voted in the last local body election which means only a little over half had a say about how they want the city to operate. So, get involved, read about each of the candidates and decide who writes about the issues you care about or who you feel will represent your needs the best. For more information about

His work with the Rata foundation and the healthier homes projects are well documented plus Bill’s complete transparency will ensure a council working together for a better future for all Nelsonians. Elaine Hemi, Retired Senior Parking Warden.

your vote can’t be counted if it arrives late, so have it in by 12 midday, Saturday, 12 October 2019.

I love Nelson, it’s a beautiful city with brilliant people - it would be a privilege to serve as your Mayor. Having been your Member of Parliament and a City Councillor I have an intimate knowledge of the workings of both central and local government. I have a strong business background having owned and operated supermarkets, alongside other business interests, creating hundreds of jobs in the Nelson region. This gives me a deep understanding and appreciation of the challenges faced by us all. Being independent assists me in bringing together a democratic, transparent and accountable council working for the benefit of everyone. My focus is on promoting policies that make our community more sustainable, resilient and connected. This is where our future lies! The Nelson City Council needs a leader who is skilled, experienced and understands the complexities and importance of local government. That’s what I’m offering you.

Mike Ward, a different mayor? Oh yes… but it has taken individuals with the courage to be different to put Nelson on the map, but keeping us there and becoming a role model will take commitment and exceptional leadership… from us all… I hope I have demonstrated that kind of leadership and commitment as an artist and athlete and through my shared leadership of numerous community groups and more than twenty years as an MP, councillor and committee chair, since retiring from the classroom and returning to Nelson forty plus years ago. I know and love this community for its courage, creativity and kindness and its willingness to step up but… we desperately need to focus on our shared aspirations and start singing from the same song sheet. Our challenges may be daunting, but for communities choosing to show the way the opportunities are substantial. And the reward? An affordable, gorgeous, inclusive and fun city. Affordable, gorgeous, inclusive, fun … and sustainable? Our children deserve no less and the world is waiting to be inspired.

Tim Skinner is a born & raised Nelsonian with a passion to lead our city forward. Studied Product Development at Massey University. Worked in Auckland for Seal Corp Technologies and Marketing company, and successfully built up his own business over 20 years. As a two-term City Councillor, Committee Chairman and Resource Management Commissioner he has worked tirelessly ensuring residents needs are heard and communities consulted, to build a healthy, vibrant, safe community. He has kept his word in striving to keep rate rises down, and been a strong voice for families around the Council table. With his business and strategic management skills, Tim has consistently championed our council to be prudently minded and supportive of local business & industry. Tim’s proven record of leadership, teamwork, and getting things done, sees him as the ideal Mayor Nelson needs. He will ensure our city is economically strong and an affordable place to live and raise a family for future generations. He’s married with children, embraces Nelson’s lifestyle, and is a keen footballer. More info on Tim Skinner for Mayor on www. timskinner.nz or contact Tim 021 668733.

I will be a fresh, dynamic, positive voice, helping to shape the future of Nelson. As your councillor I’ll work hard for you, tackling key issues - housing options, transport solutions, CBD revitalisation, age-friendly communities, youth facilities, the environment and climate change responsibility. A successful business leader with 20 years governance experience in private, education and non-profit sectors, I’m financially prudent, mindful of rates affordability, forward thinking and I have a solutions-oriented approach. I work across political divides, staying focused on what is best for our communities, environment and economy. I have a Master of Commerce degree; I am on the boards of Nayland College and Volunteer Nelson; and I am a volunteer with Age Connect and Red Cross Refugee Resettlement. I’m part of a large, supportive and outdoorsy Nelson family who love mountain biking, tramping and camping. My partner of 24 years is a builder and business mentor. Our music-loving son attends Nayland College. Working collaboratively towards a more sustainable, prosperous and people-centered Nelson, where all are welcome and encouraged to contribute and thrive. Please vote. www.rachelsanson.nz

Voting deadline is looming, and many people are still deciding who to vote for Mayor and Councillors. I suggest a careful reality check on candidates might be part of your decision-making. You’re entitled to be sceptical about all sorts of promises being made by Mayoral contenders. I can back my undertakings with a record built over six years. We’ve taken big steps on core infrastructure, attracted new investment, looked after the environment, and we’re building a savvy, efficient council organisation. CBD revitalisation is underway. I’m determined to get our transport network sorted and develop a climate change action plan that works for Nelson. Your vote for me will protect the partnerships I’ve built and secure a resilient, prosperous Nelson for you and your family. As an independent Mayor, I lead without fear or favour or political ideology. Don’t miss 12 October (noon) voting deadline – remind your friends and neighbours too!

You deserve a Councillor who’s committed to making Nelson the best little city to live, work, create, study, raise a family, and retire. I love my work as a Nelson Councillor. At 35, with a Master of Commerce degree and strong business background, I have the energy and drive to work for a better Nelson. I’m proud of my work as Chair of the Regional Transport Committee. My goal is less congestion and safer roads, building systems that work for people and our economy. I’m a practical environmentalist, rolling up my sleeves to help with community conservation projects. As a keen cyclist, I serve as President of Tasman Wheelers. I believe good governance matters and am a member of the Institute of Directors. Rates must be kept in check with ratepayers money invested cautiously and wisely, eliminating bureaucracy and waste. I’m committed to working hard, listening carefully to our community and delivering for our city. I ask for your vote so I can keep working for you to make Nelson an even better place to live.

NELSON CITY COUNCIL CANdIdATES I want Nelson to be a better place to live, for everyone who calls this city home – young and old, established families and newcomers. This means initiatives such as a more reliable and frequent public transport system, reducing peak hour traffic congestion, easing our housing crisis and improving facilities so we can be out there enjoying Nelson’s climate and surrounds. I have some good ideas about sweating our assets and want to prioritise getting a much better return on city investment. Phillipa and I have two young sons and I want to see more encouragement for innovative businesses so there are jobs here for our young people. As a businessman and a homeowner I don’t want to be paying higher rates, but there is a lot council could achieve by using its funds more wisely. Nelson needs a change in leadership style. With my nine years’ experience on council, I have the energy and commitment to help bring people together, on the Council and in the community, to make this the best place in New Zealand to live.

Brian McGurk for Council

A City for Everyone PO BYST 8 OYOU CT R OBVO ER TE

• Putting people first • Decent affordable housing • Better transport • Caring for our environment

www.brianmcgurk.co.nz

Do you share my vision for an inclusive, safe, and sustainable Nelson? My priorities include: prudent stewardship of finances and assets, wise investment in infrastructure, community facilities and services, providing decent affordable housing, advancing realistic transport solutions, and protecting our natural environment. I am an active and committed councillor with an exemplary attendance record. I’ve made strong contributions to many committees and working groups. I’ve chaired the Planning & Regulatory Committee and Nelson Biodiversity Forum during my two Council terms. Most recently I’ve been on the Community Services and Sport & Recreation Committees. Prior to serving on Council, I was the Nelson Bays Police Area Commander before leading an international team of officers in Afghanistan. In 2013 I retired from the Police after 35 years’ service. I understand the Nelson community. With a commitment to serving the public, my strengths are broad experience, consistent and responsible leadership, and ability to listen and work in partnership. A vote for me is a vote to put people first.

Kia ora koutou. Growing up in Nelson, I have been privileged to experience the best that Nelson has to offer, from its striking natural environments to its thriving arts scene, and to reap the benefits of its supportive community. Now, having recently returned from two years of education in Germany, I want to work to ensure that Nelson retains and builds upon its strengths as a vibrant, inclusive, future-proofed city. I am a strong believer in evidencebased policy and community consultation. I am committed to engaging with all members of our community and working to represent their interests at the Council table. I believe my younger voice brings a fresh perspective and the ideas and energy required to address the challenges of a rapidly changing future. I want to support Council to invest in a wide range of transport options, increase transparency, create and enhance community spaces and take proactive measures to plan for and respond to climate change. Council has the opportunity to reinvigorate the city centre through innovative thinking and bold policy but we need elected members willing to take action to achieve this. Together we can create meaningful change. I need your support. More information at: www.rohanfornelson.co.nz

I am standing for the Council because I want Nelson to be a better place to live, a place we are proud to call our home. This means initiatives such as warmer homes, more support for social housing, and improving facilities so we can be out there enjoying what Nelson is famous for. I support improving the flow of traffic in and out of the city, like changing Waimea Road to a three lane road. Two lanes into the city and one lane out first thing in the morning, closing the middle lane from 10am. Then from 2pm opening it going the other way with lights over head. I want to see better subsidised public transport, more affordable housing, retaining carparks and creating more all-day carparks, more help for homeless in Nelson especially for youth. But these are my goals, I want to represent you on the Council. I would encourage public participation in decision-making and taking ownership of decisions made by and for the people in the region, giving you more say in what Council does with your cash. A vote for me is a vote for a better Nelson.

Gaile is an experienced councillor, Rotarian and Big Brothers Big Sisters board member whose willingness to find the information required to contribute constructively to problem-solving and decision-making is an asset to those organisations and the many others she supports. Ross Newman - Chair, Big Brothers Big Sisters Nelson Tasman Tuakana Teina

Gaile Noonan has shown her big heart for the community and I have enjoyed working along side her on some of our projects. She was instrumental in bringing a very valuable resource in the way of a play to Nelson that allowed people to openly discuss mental health. I support Gaile to continue her work making positive change in our community in her role as a councillor. Paul Hampton - Victory Boxing Programme Director

I’m standing for re-election because I believe I’ve helped to make Nelson a better place and, with your support, I’d like to continue that work. Over the last two terms of Council I have successfully pushed for more flexible housing policies, a healthier environment, safer and more efficient transport links, and more open governance. I’ve supported sensible infrastructure spends and spoken out against unjustifiable ones. I successfully campaigned for the upper Trafalgar St summer road closures and for policy that makes it easier for women and younger people to stand for Council. I’m a happily married father of two and the co-creator of the popular cartoon The Little Things. Before Council I enjoyed an award-winning career in broadcasting and journalism, and my ongoing volunteer roles include the Victory Primary School Breakfast Club and Age Concern’s Pet Connect. Vote for me and I’ll work hard over the next three years to reduce congestion, convert empty offices into housing, increase democratic participation, and bring greater transparency to Council. Vote for progress. Vote Lawrey. For more visit: www.mattlawrey.co.nz

Harry (Howard) Morris has a solid business background, having owned and run several hospitality businesses over the last 18 years, including an establishment locals fondly remember called Harry’s Bar. “I believe I have the skills to communicate with individuals and community organisations, the ability to listen to their needs, and the determination to best represent these at council,” says Harry. “I believe the welfare of its people drives the wellbeing of the city. I want to be part of a progressive, inclusive council that makes well-informed decisions to benefit the whole community.” Harry says, because town is made up of lots of small businesses, he feels there needs to be representation on council from people who have real experience in the small business sector so there is an understanding of the issues they face. “Council needs to make it easy for businesses to change their use or apply for consent.” Harry has raised his three children in Nelson and, together with his partner, they have three stepchildren as well. “Blending the family has gone really well with everyone getting along – our family of 6 is aged between 18 and 28.”

As a third term councillor, it’s exciting to see so many of the contributions I have made come to fruition. There is still much to be done. I am seeking reelection to continue to advocate solutions on generational issues including: • Rapid local responses to the climate emergency. Future Access transport options which decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Designated bus/T2 lane on Waimea Road. Transitioning to zero waste. Product Stewardship. Diverting all food and green waste from landfill. • Continued restoration of our biodiversity, fresh water, and marine environments. Reducing erosion and sedimentation into our waterways. Replacing steep pine plantations with natives. Nelson Nature, Project Mahitahi, The Halo Project, Brook Reserve and Sanctuary. • Promoting a regenerative economy which places community wellbeing and ecological living. Supporting local sustainable businesses to thrive. Flourishing arts, festivals, culture, heritage, sports and outdoor recreation opportunities. Affordable urban housing. Green, vibrant and engaging streetscapes. New library, community and innovation hub. Vote Kate Fulton for Climate Action, Healthy Environments and Connected Communities.

I’m standing for Nelson City Council because I’m committed to championing the community, to deliver what Nelson needs to thrive, so that we can all be proud to call Nelson home. I was a Richmond Councillor for 9 years before shifting to Nelson (didn’t seek re-election 2016), a Nelson Airport director, proudly kicking off the new terminal project, on the Regional Transport Committee, chair of the Joint Councils’ Solid Waste committee and founded the Accessibility for All Forum. Currently I’m a Network Tasman trustee and independent chair of the Joint Councils’ Saxton Field Committee. Married with two sons, I work as a Community Development Advisor. I bring a strong regional perspective, proven leadership experience and a track record of hard work, honesty and integrity in community governance and Council. Nelson’s growth, and the delivery of services and infrastructure, needs to be strategically planned and well-managed, ensuring affordability and sustainability. As a region, we must strengthen our community resilience and protect our natural resources while enabling economic development, employment opportunities and delivery of community services. I want to be part of a Council that listens to the community, is responsive to their needs, and enables innovation, development and positive action.

NELSON CITY COUNCIL CANdIdATES

A strong voice for Nelson

Authorised by Dave McLaghlin, 1/9 Lichfield Street, Nelson 7011

I am re-standing in 2019, after narrowly missing out by 61 votes in 2016 and ask for your continued and valued support in 2019. Let’s move the region beyond the status quo of the past six years of budget blow-outs, lack of transparency and poor delivery of projects. As your representative on council, I would deliver a strong voice with an open mind that promotes and encourages transparency of decision-making and reporting. Debt levels and affordable rates must be balanced against the provision of core services and maintenance. I hold a Bachelor degree in Commerce and Management, a post graduate diploma (PGDipSSS), and diplomas as an Independent Celebrant, Career Counsellor and Life Coach. I have three decades of work experience, across business, government and non-government organisations with boards of trustees and governance experience. Currently, I am an active member on the board of Nelson Y.M.C.A, President of Rutherford Rotary Club, member of the Celebrant Association NZ and National Council of Women – Nelson. If you believe in someone presenting your views at the council table with a strong voice – Then vote Trudie Brand for Nelson City Council.

I have a clear understanding of what it takes to be a successful Councillor after attending more than 28 Council meetings this year. This knowledge and background in current local government issues will be vital in my ability to get to work for Nelsonians from day one. I bring a breadth of experience and dedication to the role of Councillor, built on years of successful support of, and engagement with, local community. I will demonstrate service, integrity, professionalism, enthusiasm, positivity and active involvement in everything I do. I want to be part of a Council that listens to its citizens, gets things done, and lives within its means whilst encouraging growth and opportunity – from the city centre to the suburbs. I will tenaciously ask questions, seek practical solutions, and represent the best interests of our community now and for future generations – to be your voice. I’m a big believer in locals supporting locals; to me it’s all about community. I would appreciate your vote and will work diligently to make Nelson a strong, sustainable, vibrant place for all of us.

My name is Alastair Cotterill. I will be a voice for the Nelson community. I am passionate about our families, from the youth to adults, helping them grow with confidence and creating a positive impact on their lives. I have a high consideration for those with disabilities and I want children to have bit of a say in this town, too. I want to ensure rate rises are kept down and that there is a control of expenditure. I will listen to community concerns and issues when they arise. I want to ensure local businesses and industries have a base to thrive, creating economic success for the greater region. I have successfully run my own professional tennis business for 32 years. Outdoors and running is also a passion. When running over the Grampian hills and looking down over Nelson, I am really proud of our city and what it could be. I would really like to see Tahuna Beach looked after, the modeller’s pond tidied up and the centre of Nelson brought to life. I am great believer that sport can help youth to adults in a positive way. I will be a champion for Nelson residents.

As an experienced director and business owner, I will use my financial and governance experience to ensure that our rates are used in the most responsible way. I want to contribute to a council that works together in the best interests of the residents to create a vibrant and sustainable city for now and future generations. I am not afraid to stand up for what is right, have strong leadership capabilities and am willing to put in the work to ensure you, the Nelson community, have a voice. I had 23 years with the Bank of New Zealand, since 2001 my wife and I have operated a successful nationwide tourism business based in Nelson. A member of the Institute of Directors, I am an experienced company director and have served seven years as Chair of Nelson College in addition to other private and public sector director positions. I am involved as a volunteer with other community and sports organisations. My wife and three sons share my passion for our community. Work with me to create a vibrant and future-focussed region.

Mako make a statement SportS

Jonty Dine and Peter Jones

The Tasman Mako have declared themselves firm favourites to take out the Mitre 10 Cup premiership after humbling the defending champions 40-0 at home on Friday. Auckland had no answers for a clinical Mako performance in a six try demolition in Nelson. The rout completed the Mako’s eighth win to kick off its 2019 campaign, the best start in the franchise’s history. The Mako struck first in trademark style as Andrew Makalio rumbled over on the back of a rampaging rolling maul. The second came soon after as David Havili cut the Auckland line to shreds and linked up with the ever-present Ethan Blackadder who waltzed in under the sticks. Tasman survived a sustained period of pressure, held Auckland over the line, saw Wyatt Crockett sin binned for repeated scum infringements and then stretched its

advantage with a third. After setting up the attack with a pilfer Richie McCaw would applaud, Leicester Faingaanuku finished off superb set piece move to put the Mako ahead 190. The hosts continued the momentum after break, Finlay Christie scoring the bonus point with a typically sneaky try. The points kept flowing. With Mitch Hunt looking certain to kick for touch, the fly half took a quick tap and the Mako set a maul five metres out which was never going to be stopped as Sione Havili bagged a fifth for Tasman. Tasman piled on the punishment as replacement hooker Hugh Roach went in to cap a sensational Tasman victory. Mako assistant coach Shane Christie, said his side were well aware they would need to lift their game against a dangerous Auckland outfit. “We put a big emphasis on getting some areas back that we

Sione Havili, Leicester Faingaanuku and Levi Aumua enjoy their night out against Auckland. Photo: Barry Whitnall/ Shuttersport may have lost the last couple of weeks, when we get pushed we can really turn it up.” Although the Mako are assured of a home semifinal to be played in Blenheim, likely on Saturday, October 19, Christie suggests it will be business as usual prior to that. “[The home semi] is a massive advantage but it is not at the front of our minds just now, we have two weeks of round robin games left to try and improve our game before then.” If the challenge of taking on

the defending champs wasn’t motivation enough for the Mako, they had the added incentive of giving skipper David Havili a night to remember as he ran out for the 50th time. Next on the Mako menu is Northland, who come to Nelson on Sunday, with a 2.05pm kickoff. Scorers: Tasman 40 (Makalio, Blackadder 2, Faingaanuku, Christie, Roach tries, Hunt 5 cons) Auckland 0

Swimming: A field of forty swimmers braved the chilly sea temperatures on Sunday and swam 600m to raise nearly $2000 to support victims of Prostate Cancer. Matthew Hansen cruised home in a touch over eight minutes to claim victory over Angus Perham. Lucy Barron was next to finish, ahead of Jon Linyard and Jude Vincent. With a large high tide still an hour away at race start, swimmers faced a tough battle as they headed south into the teeth of a strong current. However, once around the southern mark it was a rapid journey back to the Nelson Yacht Club ramp and a welcome exit from the 14-degree waters. After this chilly season introduction, swimmers will be gearing up for a full season in the sea, with the weekly Port Nelson series starting on November 7.

Running: Saturday’s 26th Abel Tasman Coastal Classic was dominated by Canterbury runners, especially the women’s field where they swept the podium. Kirsten Wright, 2.54.16, doubled up on her last year’s victory finishing just over two minutes clear of Dana Paton with Jenny Stewart following her home. Men’s winner, Vajin Armstrong was in complete control in the 33km journey from Awaroa to Marahau, never being seriously challenged in his 2.28.44 effort. Motueka’s Luke Stuthridge added some local colour with his silver placing holding out Simon Angus from Wellington.

Premier league cricket season heats up Tasman Premier League club cricket begins on Saturday 5 October with one newcomer, but the usual favourites. Peter Grigg previews the coming season Taylors Contracting Wanderers/Motueka is the result of a merging of Wanderers and Motueka clubs, which have both been in decline over recent years to the point where recently neither had been able to field a competitive senior team. The new team will be largely made of a core of Wanderers regulars, backed with about five promising Motueka upand-comers and a couple of overseas pros. Boe Bamford is one of those highly touted youngsters who we will watch with interest. Englishman Max Mannering will be the player/coach. He is an off spinner who will get plenty of overs and is a handy batsman. Zade Mohamnard, an Afghan out of England, is a genuine left arm quick who has been released from his English club side. Hayden Ingham, the old hand from Wanderers, will no doubt also provide support with middle innings overs. The Car Company Stoke/

Nayland will be looking to carry on the good form of the past couple of seasons, but obviously clean sweeping the silverware twice is a hard act to follow. They will need to be more consistent with the bat this season, especially as the ageing bowling attack packs a bit less punch. This outfit know how to win however and will aspire to play some positive cricket and build towards another tilt at the Central Districts Club Championship in February. The Nelson College 1st XI will have their usual battles. They will be losing a number of senior players as they depart their scholarly ways. However, college have retained the gangly opening bowler Jarrod McKay and he should be well supported by his younger sibling Kaleb. Finn Restieaux is an extremely gifted batsman and leg spinner and a lot will be expected from his now experienced shoulders. ACOB have had a very solid

preseason and apart from Nic Clark have their entire 2018/19 squad returning for the upcoming campaign. They will also welcome quick Nibu Jose, who is a very talented youngster with overseas experience who is fairly new to Nelson. There are a few former players coming back to their roots as well. Wakatu have a few player changes from a somewhat inconsistent effort last season. Skipper Devon Serrurier is unavailable due to work and family commitments so Campbell McLean will be leading the side around the paddock. Also absent this year is opening bowler Cody Golding who has relocated to Blenheim. As previously mentioned, Wakatu reap the benefits from Nelson College as school leavers Hughes, Aitken and MacAlister join the club. Daniel Hooper will once again be performing coaching duties. With a string of inconsistent performances last season,

Stoke/Nayland will look for a third consecutive clean sweep this cricket season. Photo: Shuttersport. Wakatu will be looking to improve on their results and make the TPL semi-finals this year. WTTU will be led again by bowling all-rounder Sam Baxendine. He will be surrounded by some of the experienced senior leaders from last year; Joey O’Connor, Mason Thelin and Tom Cross, all of whom will be expected to make major contributions. The only major loss from last season is all - rounder Kurt Thompson to Australia. He will leave a major gap both with bat and ball.

Round one sees Nelson College hosting new boys Wanders/Motueka at Ngawhatu and ACOB travelling out to challenge Stoke/Nayland at Marsden Rec. Wakatu

will be on the road to Blenheim playing Falcons at Horton 1 while WTTU play Dolphins on the adjoining pitch. All fixtures begin at 11.30 am.

Tui trample Tasman The Hawke’s Bay Tui showed why they are leading the way in the Farah Palmer Cup championship race on Friday night. They were far too clinical and physical for the Tasman Mako women’s team, winning 55-5

after holding a 27-5 advantage at the break. The first half was a virtual procession until the final seven minutes when the Mako finally awoke. The Mako effort was laudable, although they were outclassed.

Cyclists take a tumble during the criterium at Berryfields on Sunday. Photo: Evan Barnes/ Shuttersport.

Criterium tests local cyclists Jonty Dine The cycling was fast and furious at Sunday’s criterium at Berryfields Subdivision. Following on from Saturday’s Calder Stewart series race, almost 50 riders took on the closed circuit criterium and negotiated the short and sharp 1.3km course. Tasman Wheelers president Mike Rutledge says riders thrived on the pristine surface.

“It’s not often you get to run a criterium on perfect, new asphalt, all riders found it a treat.” However, a few may have taken some scrapes and cuts away with them after a tumble during the elite men’s race. “One of the rider’s front tyres punctured and took them down.” That was to be the one and only crash during the event which was won by New Zealand

junior road cycling champion Ally Wollaston. In the men’s elite, Bailey O’Donnell won in a highly competitive field. Mike says it was a thrill for crowds to see riders going absolutely flat out. The weekend’s races marked the unofficial start of the cycling season in Nelson. Nelson riders Keegan Hornblow and Kaio Lart placed second and third respectively.

Before moving to New Zealand as a 12-year-old, Jama Boss had never played football in boots or even on grass. Growing up in Yemen, Jama developed his skills on the street. There were no clubs, no fields, and little structure. Games would be interrupted by passing cars and, with no officials, there was plenty of foul play that went unpunished. “There was plenty of rough stuff going on and sometimes we would wag school to keep playing,” Jama says. This upbringing perhaps explains his trademark goal scoring celebration where Jama gets on all fours and kisses the turf. “It’s just about being grateful for the moment.” This sight could well become customary at Trafalgar Park this season after Tasman United secured the highly sought-after

signature of Jama for the 2019/20 season. Jama is a renowned goal scorer and brings a formidable reputation to Tasman. Born in Somalia, Jama moved to Yemen as a three-month-old and grew up in a large family with five sisters and eight brothers. When his father passed away in 2008, they fell on hard times financially and turned to family in New Zealand. Jama’s uncle Adbi helped bring Jama and his siblings to Hamilton “It was a hard time,” he says. “We needed to move closer to relatives, so we reunited with them.” It was here where Jama got his first taste of organised football. “The game was so different to on the street where everyone just wants to get on the ball.” ‘The Boss’ or ‘Bossman’ didn’t take long to shine on the pitch and was soon being courted by various clubs before settling with the Hamilton Wanderers. While looking for his next challenge,

Tasman United have secured the services of striker Jama Boss for the 2019/20 season. Photo: Jonty Dine. Jama headed north to join Manukau United where he enjoyed his most successful stint to date. Jama picked up the golden boot in the Auckland division one competition, scoring 20 goals and winning almost every trophy available, including players

player of the year, supporter’s player of the year and the league’s player of the year. In the shape of his life, Jama says he hopes to bring his hot run of form south. “Hopefully, there is more coming with Tasman.”

Jama was lured to the franchise by new head coach Jess Ibrom. “It’s a great place to be and a great place to play football, so I couldn’t turn it down.” Tasman kicks off its campaign on November 2 against Southern United in Dunedin.

Wrestling returns to the region Jonty Dine

Duncan McDougall used to make fun of his brothers for watching wrestling, now he’s about to take on the New Zealand Heavyweight

Champion in front of his home crowd. The larger than life characters had a young Brook hooked and it was then he knew he wanted to be a professional wrestler. Now known as ‘Brook Duncan’, he will be one half of

the main event as wrestling returns to Nelson for the first time in two years. He says it’s a great chance for anyone who thinks wrestling is a “pile of rubbish” to get out of their comfort zone. “Anyone that dismisses something because it’s fake, I guess has never watched a movie before.” Brook will wrestle ‘Rufguts Roddy Gunn’ for the unified New Zealand heavyweight championship after unsuccessfully challenging for the title in September. However, when the two behemoths meet again this weekend, Brook is hoping home crowd advantage will help him end Rufguts’ lengthy reign. Brook began wrestling in 2010 in Blenheim before moving to Auckland and joining Impact Wrestling. He has trained at the world’s oldest current wrestling promotion in Mexico - learning the art of lucha libre. It was here that Brook rubbed shoulders with some of the biggest names in wrestling including Super Crazy, Rey Mysterio, Alberto del Rio, Jake the Snake Roberts, and the most feared man in wrestling, Haku. Brook says during his time in Mexico he worked shows at both ends of the glamour spectrum. “I did some decent shows but also some pretty flea market looking ones.” As to be expected in the brutal world

of wrestling, Brook has had his fair share of injuries over the years. “There was a match in Auckland where someone smashed a mug and it wasn’t’ cleaned up, I was thrown out of ring and got massive gash in my hand from the broken ceramic, the blood was squirting out with my heartbeat.” Brook has also fractured an elbow in a street fight after being suplexed onto a steel chair, and has taken part in the age-old wrestling tradition of blading, or intentionally cutting your forehead. Brook’s gimmick is inspired by New Zealand, implementing elements of quintessential Kiwi culture. As well as performing Ka Mate, Brook uses a spare tackle as part of his move set and a swinging neck breaker mimicking an illegal ruck clearance as his finisher. Brook says he hopes who others can be inspired by seeing someone that may not be so technically gifted go overseas and wrestle. Brook encourages those who have never experienced professional wrestling to get along to Waka Warfare. “It’s entertainment, suspend your disbelief for a second, and you’ll have a great time.” Waka Warfare 7pm Saturday, October 5 Stoke Hall Tickets www.championshipwrestling. co.nz
