Thousands petition speed changes Paula Hulburt

Thousands of people have signed a petition calling for traffic bosses to scrap plans to lower speed limits. New Zealand Transport Agency

has proposed that the speed limit between Blenheim and Nelson be slashed to 80kmh, estimating it will add just nine extra minutes to the travel time. They are also proposing to lower a stretch of road between Atawhai

and Wakapuaka from 80 kmh to 60 kmh. But fed-up motorists have been quick to hit back, calling for the idea to be ditched. Nelson driver Stephanie Drewery started the online petition last

week, which has been signed almost 7000 times. She says the speed limit was increased in the first place as cars became safer. “The New Zealand speed limit has been 100kmh since the early 1980s.

“The upper limit was set at an increased level because the roads were all tar sealed with a centre line and cars had decent suspension and air bags.

Meet your new councillors Nelson has embraced change around the council table and voted on six new councillors after Saturday’s election. Seasoned councillor Pete Rainey is making a comeback after a break last term and Trudie Brand has secured a place after narrowly missing out in 2016. We have our youngest ever councillor in Rohan O’Neill-Stevens at 19 years of age as well as community champion Yvonne Bowater. Former Tasman councillor Judene Edgar has earned spot, alongside Rachel Sanson, who was the highest polling councillor. The six newcomers will be joined by returning councillors Matt Lawrey, Mel Courtney, Kate Fulton, Gaile Noonan, Tim Skinner and Brian McGurk. More election coverage on pages 6 and 7. “Now a majority of mountain roads have road edge barriers, passing lanes and wider cut corners,” she says. Following a series of public meetings in Nelson and Marlborough earlier this year, NZTA heard from people who attended that speed limits needed to be cut. But cutting limits is not the answer, says Stephanie. “Why are the NZTA and the police so insistent on reducing speed limits on safer roads being driven with safer cars?” Between 2009 and 2018, 20 people died and 92 were seriously injured in crashes on State Highway 6 between Blenheim and Nelson. Nineteen of these deaths were on 100kmh stretches of SH6 and 87

However, NZTA’s director of regional relationships Jim Harland says cutting the limit would help prevent deaths and

serious injuries. he says. “It’s popular with cyclists, busy with freight and commuters, and there are school children and others crossing the road in 100km/hour environments.” The story has become one of the most contentious issues posted to the Nelson Weekly Facebook page, garnering more than 600 comments. Nelson woman Diane Chandler says it will cause frustration. “Millions was spent on the Rai Saddle alignment and now it’s going to be reduced speed? Going to cause frustration but won’t stop the idiots. “Why not target those speeding, fatigue drivers, and those driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs first. But reducing speed isn’t going to address any of that,” she says. Shaun Duff says it’s not the

speed limit that’s the problem, “its bad drivers, bad judgments on intersections and not understanding the road rules reducing the speed will not solve the problem”. NZTA’s Jim Harland has called for those signing the petition to take part in the decision process. The petition will be considered if it is presented on time, within the consultation period, which is 15 October to 12 November. Any changes to the speed limits could be in place by the end of the year. Fresh start for Nelson city Santa Parade

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The new organisers of the Nelson Santa Parade may be keeping many of the details under-wraps but promise there will be “no bad surprises”. Tom Smythe and Claire McLean, from events management company EBTAC Ltd, have taken over the reins to organise the parade on 1 December - and all signs are pointing towards the big man in red making a comeback. The Nelson Santa Parade Trust, which delivered the event for 20 years, resigned earlier this year after facing a backlash for their decision to feature Hana Kōkō rather than the traditional Santa, in the 2018 parade. Trust chair Roger Wilson also said they have seen volunteer membership declining over time, making the delivery of the event “difficult”. “When the previous parade director moved to Christchurch earlier this year, the trust felt it was time to hand over the organisation of the parade to new management.” Tom and Claire say they already have lots of float entries, new businesses and community groups taking part.

New airport set to soar Charles Anderson

Uber driver shortage

The final part of Nelson Airport’s $32million overhaul is almost complete as the new departures’ hall is set to open next Tuesday. It will mark the end of the two-year build which has seen the demolition of the original terminal and the creation of a new, ambitious design for a building that reflects the region and its growth. However, chief executive Rob Evans says that he is torn over the completion of the project. “When you have had your heart and soul in something like this for so long, it is hard to let go.” However, he was proud of the team – having managed the build and run an airport at the same time. “We have all been doing two jobs.” Jointly owned by the Nelson city and Tasman district councils, the airport company began the redevelopment in June 2017, with an expectation it would take two years. The new infrastructure has been designed to cater for the forecast growth to 1.4 million passengers in 2035. Rob says there are always hiccups

Uber is defending its apparent lack of drivers saying they are confident it will increase. The Nelson Weekly has been monitoring the ride share platform since it launched last Wednesday. The most drivers that it has seen online is one, while most of the time there are none. An Uber spokesperson would not reveal how many drivers it had but said that they drove in hours that suited them. “We expect more supply in the coming days as drivers compete their registration. This will increase matches for riders and also shrink wait times as more drivers discover what more than seven thousand NZ driver partners have already unearthed - the flexibility of Uber.” The spokesperson said that they recommend keeping an eye on the app for when a driver partner does come online. “As more driver partners sign up to the platform in Nelson and meet the required qualifications, we’re confident the supply of available driver partners will increase.” The spokesperson says Uber is “safely transporting millions of passengers across more than 700 cities every single day with an average wait time of just five minutes”. “We initially anticipated the wait times locally in places like Nelson would be longer at launch as we wait for more driver partners to come online.”

Charles Anderson

The new terminal will see check-ins move from where they are now to a dedicated departures area. McCashin’s are also opening a bar, to go along with the two cafes in the terminal. Rob says Jetstar’s decision to pull out of Nelson next month was “disappointing” but was confident that Air New Zealand and other airlines would pick up the slack without punishing

customers in the pocket. The airport’s official opening is on Saturday. The terminal won’t be fully operational until Tuesday, with the new baggage claim area not up and running for a few weeks. It will mark the first time that bags will be collected inside rather than outside. Rob says the building itself is an “engineering feat of national significance”. It uses locally grown and

processed timber connected by steel that is designed to move laterally and vertically with earthquakes. It is also naturally ventilated, using airflows rather than air conditioning to cool the terminal. The building is also future proofed, allowing for future growth if necessary. “It’s not perfect right now but it will be,” says Rob. “It’s been an extraordinary few years for everyone involved and we should all be really proud.”

‘Darling boy’ farewelled after tragedy in Havelock Staff Reporter The family of a six-yearold Nelson boy who died in Havelock last week have farewelled their “shining star”. Nekko Paul Haworth was reported missing from Havelock in the early hours of Tuesday, October 8. Police divers located his body in the marina after a short search on Tuesday afternoon. His funeral was held in Nelson on Monday. Nekko’s father Tom Haworth shared his grief earlier last week. He recalled the day his son was born on March 13, 2013. “(It was) the happiest day of my life, I was ecstatic to welcome my boy into the world as news spread to family and friends,”

he said. “I had never in my lifetime anticipated that, six years later, I would be faced with the darkest day when I received a call saying my son was missing.” Tom said his “heart dropped”. “Hours later I received the news no parent should ever receive.” He said that Nekko held a smile that “radiated across his face to the point that it would be impossible not to return a smile”. Nekko’s mother Gemma Astwood described the agony of losing her son as “the worst day of my life”. She shared a heart-breaking message on a fundraising website that has been set up to help the family. “My son was the best thing that

[happened] in my life,” she said. “I’ll never forget you, my darling boy.” Gemma’s father Graeme Astwood expressed the “pain and hurt we are all suffering” as “indescribable” on a message shared to a community Facebook page. “My wonderful daughter Gemma always put Nekko first. Nekko was her [shining] star and rock. “So, now when I go to work early in the morning on my bike I will look up in the sky and the bright shiney star will be my wonderful grandson looking down at me,” he said. Nekko’s death has been referred to the coroner and is under investigation by police. – With NZ Herald

Council overhaul points to want of action Locally Owned and Operated

On Saturday half of Nelsonians voted in local body elections which resulted in a new-look council. Charles Anderson offers his analysis. Rachel Reese was celebrating her mother’s birthday at the Boat Shed when she found out that she had regained her role as mayor for a third term. “There’s a brilliant momentum in our community at the moment,” she said. “So I’m really looking forward to carrying that through and really taking us to the next level as a region.” What that next level looks like, however, is unclear as an overhaul on Nelson City Council sees the table achieve gender equality for the first time, perhaps ever. The overall turnout was only a tiny bit down on previous elections of about 52 per cent. Conservative council veteran Ian Barker was voted out, as was Mike Rutledge, who many saw as that side of the aisle’s man in waiting. In their places there is a slew of new councillors, many of whom

represent clear shift to more progressive politics. Among them is Rachel Sanson, who achieved the highest number of votes, and Rohan O’Neill Stevens, who at 19-years-old is one of the youngest councillors in the country. He ran on a campaign on representing a youthful voice and on being serious about the city’s responsibility to stem climate change. Joining them is Pete Rainey, who unsuccessfully ran against Rachel Reese in the 2016 mayoral election, and Judene Edgar, a longtime Tasman District Councillor and has made a name for herself in helping local organisations with their governance issues. Trudie Brand, the one-time Nelson Residents Association vice-president, also has a seat at the table, along with Yvonne Bowater, who has been involved

Joining them are others who have been on council for at least two terms. Matt Lawrey, who campaigned with Rohan and Rachel Sanson, achieved the third most votes. Tim Skinner, who might be considered Matt’s polar opposite, ran for mayor but was let known that people apparently prefer him as a voice of fiscal responsibility around the table. Brian McGurk is Nelson’s former top cop, turned Labour voice on

council. Kate Fulton, who also campaigned on climate issues, is back in. Two-term councillor Gaile Noonan is back on and is a likely candidate for deputy mayor. The up shot is that the mayoral vote seemed to be a referendum on Rachel Reese’s leadership. To have three current councillors run against her is not a glowing endorsement of the way she runs the council table. Now two of those candidates, in Mel Courtney and

Tim Skinner, are around that table. Indeed, Rachel was aided by so many people putting their hands up to try to lead the city. It is likely that if only one major candidate ran, rather than three of them, then the result would have been much closer. There is no doubt they split the vote. Now the challenge will be how a new and visibly more progressive council works alongside the mayor, who once seemed to be the champion of more conservative voters. Whether she has adapted, softened or is just moving with the times, there now really doesn’t seem to be too much gulf between the mayor’s attitudes and some of the table’s more progressive voices. There are some major issues facing Nelson that needs council action and this council does seem to be a vote for making things happen, rather than a more conservative attitude of sitting on hands and protecting against rates rises at all costs. The question will be whether personalities get in the way.

Local grower wins big at national awards Bruno Saia

EXCELLENCE IN DERMATOLOGY

When Jono Sutton’s name was called out at the Young Grower of the Year competition this month it was a first for the Nelson region. Jono, who works at Edens Road Fruit Ltd in Hope, became the first local to win the main competition, which is organised by Horticulture New Zealand. He beat out six other contestants from around New Zealand. “This is one of horticulture’s highest achievements for a young person, so winning it is massive,” the 26-yearold says. “To be the first Nelsonian to win was pretty cool and I’m pretty excited about that.” Jono grows six different varieties of apples and boysenberries at the property on Eden Road. “We aim to produce 50,000 cartons of apples and 4-500 tons of boysenberries a year,” he says. To win the ‘Young Grower of the Year’ Jono was tested in practical and theoretical elements, such as pest and disease, irrigation, spreadsheeting, tractor driving and business insurance. He was also required to deliver a speech. The winner is the person who got the best points across all different modules. “I’ve competed in the national

event once before, in 2013. It was a long time ago. After six more years in the industry, I’ve learned a lot, especially around the business and management areas. I had a pretty good knowledge of most of the practical tasks then, but some of those business areas I’m a bit more familiarized with now.” As the regional Nelson finalist, he was up against six other contestants from around New Zealand, in Tauranga. Two of Jono’s grandparents, who are also berry and apple growers, were there to support him. “I left school when I was 17 and went full-time orcharding. I loved it since I was a kid. During school holidays I was working and really enjoying it. It was always a family thing and I always enjoyed it,” he says. HortNZ chief executive Mike Chapman says the Young Grower of the Year competition is important because it highlighted horticulture as a vibrant career for young people. “Our $6 billion industry continues to grow in response to worldwide and domestic demand for fresh, healthy food. At the same time, our industry is responding to new requirements, particularly in the areas of freshwater, land use, food safety, and health and safety,” he says.

Early Nelson motor NEWS history immortalised Locally Owned and Operated

Health board results: The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board will have two new members for the next term. Progress results show that Nelson’s outgoing deputy mayor Paul Matheson and Jacinta Newport have been elected to join five incumbents at the 11-seat table. Almost 1500 voting forms were informal, so were excluded, and more than 7000 were left blank. The Health Minister will appoint four members to join the seven elected members. The elected members are: Jenny Black, Brigid Forrest, Gerald Hope, Allan Panting, Stephen Vallance, Paul Matheson and Jacinta Newport.

Denis Le Cren can’t stand seeing things thrown away. He doesn’t like the idea of losing history. So, over the years he has taken it upon himself to make sure that parts of our Nelson that were once bastions of society are immortalised. “I thought ‘it deserves to be put down on paper before it is all lost’.” Denis has been in the Vintage Car Club for more than 50 years and in that time did its monthly magazines. During the research for the articles he would stumble across information that was specific to Nelson. In his latest publication, he has brought that together in an early history of the region’s motor businesses – from 1903 to the early 1960s. Early Nelson Motor Businesses features almost 300 such businesses spanning Nelson, Murchison and Takaka, that popped up over the rise of the motorcar. Some are still in existence.

Event raises thousands for hospice: An event with an artistic bent raised $31,000 for Nelson Tasman Hospice earlier this month. The Spring Show event was run by Shine owner Jo Menary and the Parker Gallery’s Leonie Allen. It featured an art auction and fashion show which was emceed by Laura Irish. Nelson Tasman Hospice chief executive Frans Dellebeke says the hospice was grateful for the support. Denis Le Cren with his book about the region’s motoring businesses. Photo: Charles Anderson. “It was a different world back then,” Denis says. “Motor business owners were important people in the day.” He even uncovered a littleknown fact that part of an early Austin motorcar was made in New Zealand. But these days Denis says the car occupies a difficult place

in society. “The car is sort of frowned upon by a lot of people because of pollution but what they don’t complain is about planes in the sky, which is about 100 times worse.” Denis has always liked working with his hands – whether it’s building his own home,

restoring old Austin motorcars or grandfather clocks. So, perhaps it is no surprise that the retired electrical consultant also enjoys doing the layout production of his books himself. To order a copy of Early Nelson Motor Businesses you can call Denis on 5476297.

Mental health in building: The mental health issues that builders face in the industry will be aired during an evening with two high-profile guest speakers next week. Mike King and Mark Hadlow will host an event at the Annesbrook Church in Stoke on October 17. The evening seeks to share personal stories for men on mental health, physical health and disease, addiction, relationships, stress and more. It is open to all in the industry, including partners, staff, apprentices and friends. Limited seats available. To register: http://menshealthexpo.eventbrite.co.nz

Kay heads out on the long trail Sara Hollyman Reporter

sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz

A local businesswoman has swapped her office for six months of the great outdoors to raise funds for the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary. Kay Chapman headed north just over a week ago, towards the start of Te Araroa Trail, which she plans to walk over a six-month-period. Her 3000km journey began last Thursday and will see her walk the length of New Zealand, from Cape Reinga to Bluff. Te Araroa is New Zealand’s longest tramping route that winds its way from one end of the country along old trails, new tracks, beaches and roads. Kay says she was a mixture of nervous and excited in the lead-up to starting the track. “I’m nervous about the physicality of it, but I’m looking forward to getting on and doing it and seeing New Zealand. As a volunteer at the sanctuary, she says after deciding to walk the track, it seemed like a great opportunity to raise funds for the work the sanctuary does. “I love the Brook, I’ve volunteered there for 2 or 3 years, it seemed like a good opportunity to do something for the environment while out doing something like this.” Kay will spend roughly six months hiking with a pack weighing just 5kg and will be blogging about the journey as she goes. “I’ve been in business for a long time and I need a rest, well walking the length of the country isn’t exactly a rest. “Six months is a long time to take but I don’t want to just walk the trail and not notice things. I don’t want to rush.” She says the only part of the journey that’s vaguely planned is a flight booked to Nelson on Christmas eve to spend Christmas with her family before continuing on into the South Island. Brook Waimarama Sanctuary chief executive Ru Collin says what Kay doing is great for the sanctuary. “We think it’s great that she’s trying to support us by highlighting what we’re doing here.” To follow Kay’s blog or donate go to www.kayontheta.co.nz

What started as a fundraiser in Nelson has become a nationwide battle against breast cancer. The fourth year annual Rally against Breast Cancer will take place at clubs throughout the region and brings novices and veterans alike together on the tennis court all for a cause. The “Kelly Bowater Travel Rally Against Breast Cancer” is an opportunity for the whole family to get together in an active way to appreciate the importance of exercise for health and wellbeing. Cardio on court provides a way to socialise with no knowledge of tennis require. All genders and ages can take part with all proceeds to go to the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. Suburbs players snubbed after awards win: I would have thought that signing players of this quality that have already contributed significantly to the local football community both on and off the pitch would be a priority to Nelson Bays Football/Tasman United. Bryce Easton

Chopping and changing coaches is probably not helping the case. Coaches from outside the region need time to recognise players and grow into the local environment. Having said that, I was amazed these two weren’t offered deals. Is there something else going on? Nigel Thompson

Speed limits to be slashed on state highway between Nelson and Blenheim: I drive this road all the time, no need for speed reduction, just more passing

lanes. Shaun Zweifellow

Less speed less harm. Would be nice if people drove better, didn’t text, learned our road rules before coming to NZ, thought about others before getting behind the wheel intoxicated, didn’t cross the centre line etc, but that’s just never going to happen. I hate to say it as driving at 80km p/h will feel so slow, but if it means someone innocent walks away from an accident, isn’t it worth it.... maybe. Leanne McLean What about only reducing speed in those areas that need lower speeds such as the Nelson side of Whangamoas and leave the rest at 100km/h? Millions was spent on the Rai Saddle alignment and now it’s going to be reduced speed? Going to cause frustration but won’t stop the idiots. Why not target those speeding, fatigued drivers, and those driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs first? But reducing

editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz facebook.com/nelsonweekly www.nelsonweekly.co.nz speed isn’t going to address any of that. Diane Chandler An 80km road doesn't have to be maintained to the same standard as 100km... it's simply cost cutting. Lisa Butcher Driver training is what is required, not reducing speed limits on perfectly safe roads. I agree parts could be reduced as it is not possible to do 100km in those spots anyway. Sue Macdonald The problem is not the speed of 100km. The problem is the driving skills and the people who think they’re invincible and go more than 100km. Kayla Jones Sad ... but maybe for the best. Ben Dp There will be road rage at the bottom of the Whangamoas when people are running late for ferries, being behind trucks. Trucks will lose time, they are already locked at 90km.

Reducing the road speed is NOT going to stop cars crossing the centre line or driving into the sea. Karen Muckle Ridiculous decision, a few incompetent drivers and the authorities overreact. Put policing back on the road and target the problem drivers. John Sauer New signs mooted for Tahunanui: Amazing idea! Beautiful part of Nelson that needs to be appreciated. I think a roundabout would make that intersection a lot safer and the beach more accessible. Dick Wouters If you want to define your boundaries you should do a couple of welcome arches like in Santa Monica, Bilboa village or Encinitas... you could even do something like the Venice Beach sign. A bit more interesting than a generic blue/yellow sun and surf logo. Bryce Easton

Nelson Matters Two important milestones pass this weekend with the official opening of the new Airport terminal and the 25th Nelson Arts Festival. It is great the Prime Minister is joining us for both. They mark a maturing of our region from sleepy hollow of yesteryear to an innovative city that is buzzing with visitors and creativity. The new airport terminal is long overdue. Passenger numbers have grown by tenfold over the past 25 years from 100,000 per year to a million a year. I have been advocating for the major upgrade for a decade and played a small part in securing cabinet support in 2016 for the $4mil-

lion Government investment in the new control tower. The credit of the superb new terminal goes to our Nelson Airport company ably led by Rob Evans and overseen by the Board chaired by Paul Steere. Our airport is more than a building. It is where our visitors take in their first impressions of our city. It is where we greet and farewell our loved ones. I used to cringe welcoming guests at Nelson’s old airport with its quaint orange square carpet. Now I swell with pride. I love the use of Nelson Pine laminated timber, the angular roof mirroring our mountains and the open glass frontage celebrating our

sunshine and vista. I also take pride in the hundreds of local skilled businesses and tradespeople like Gibbons Construction that have built this iconic building. Nelson should take equal pride in our Arts Festival. The opening on Friday with the Masked Parade has encouraged thousands of children, including my four, to participate in the arts. One of the biggest supporters was the late Kim Merry who contributed so much to its success. It is a coup for the organisers this year to have Jacinda Ardern as a guest judge. Arts Festival 2019 also welcomes back the stunning light show

‘Goddess’ finds new home Staff reporter

Fiona Sutherland’s sculpture “Goddess of Flight” has a new home at Saxton Field. The sculpture was donated to Nelson City Council when the Nelson Airport was redeveloped. The new location was recommended by council’s art selection panel and following conversations with iwi. Saxton Field was the site of Nelson’s first airport, initiated by the Aero Club in 1932, so it

was deemed a suitable fit for the artwork. The design as a whole is a celebration of visitors flying in and out of Nelson. The sculpture depicts a girl standing on boulders representing the Boulder Bank, the fish on her skirt give recognition to the role of the fishing industry in Nelson. The skirt is also representative of a piece of wearable art which was founded in Nelson and still has its home in the city with the WOW museum.

The fish on the bottom of the skirt morph into flying fish towards the top and rise to a godwit which the goddess is releasing to the north – symbolic of the migrating godwits which make an annual pilgrimage to Nelson from Alaska and then return. Visitors can take a stroll around Saxton Field and enjoy the Goddess of Flight in its new location alongside the pedestrian bridge at the top of Saxton Creek pond, between Daelyn Drive and Saxton Oval.

Danny Guard is the first and only Nelsonian to summit Everest, but after a devastating earthquake put an end to his first attempt, he went back again. Sara Hollyman catches up with him at Burger Culture to find out what it’s like to make that decision. “I was in awe of people who had been to Everest. I was envious. So, when my wife told me I could do it, but it had to be before I was 50, I knew it had to be soon. I was 49. We left Kathmandu on April 1, 2015, I was just happy to be there and to have a crack. After training at Base Camp we set off for Camp 1 on April 24. We left at 4.30am to get through the Khumbu Icefall before the sun came up. The previous year 16 people died there. We got there and it was like ‘yes, we’re finally on the mountain’. The next day at 11.56am we just started really moving, I thought it was an avalanche. We realised it was an earthquake, I looked out the tent flap and there were big crevasses opening up around us. A few minutes after it stopped, we heard this tremendous roar. We couldn’t see because there was low cloud, but Guy Cotter yelled ‘avalanche!’ I saw him dive into his tent and thought ‘I’m doing what he’s doing’. Later on, I asked him why he

dove into the tent and he told me it makes it easier to find your body later. We had no idea how bad it was, we started trying to reach Base Camp to let them know we were all safe but couldn’t get hold of them at all. Finally, we got hold of our camp manager, she said, ‘Base Camp’s been obliterated I’ll get back to you’, she never did. We slowly got more information over the radio. We knew there were casualties. We knew we wouldn’t be able to get down the icefall so went on half rations because we had no idea how long we were going to be there. The next day the guides decided to start trying to make a new route down while people from Base Camp were trying to make their way up to us, but then at midday there was another big aftershock. People started screaming on the radios ‘get us out of here’, people panicked.

Danny Guard at Burger Culture relaying his story of conquering Everest. Photo: Sara Hollyman. That’s when we knew the only way out was choppers which unbeknown to us, were busy flying all the injured and dead out of Base Camp. The next day a chopper took us back to Base Camp. I found out that five of our Adventure Consultants team had died, eight were injured. Later on, another died. It was all surreal, there was a disconnect, you weren’t injured, you’re alive. On the trek out I already knew I was going to go back and try again. I reckon that was my way of coping. I put all my energy into focussing on how I was going to

get back. I continued training, raised money and did. Going up the wind was blowing us over and we were nearly turned around, but it cleared. I summited around 7am on May 19, 2016. It was more of a relief than anything, no tears or emotion, just relief. I got my camera out thinking I’d take a little movie, and it was frozen solid, so the only shots I have is from other people. I’m really happy and glad I went back but it was more a relief that I did it.

Summer and bugs seem to go together. This is because it’s the time of year when a lot of insects multiply rapidly and invade your space, bringing with them havoc and distress. While some of these can transmit diseases or sting, most of the insects will cause nuisance by just being there. In fact, research shows that about 67% of homeowners become more concerned about pest insects during the summer. This is the barbeque season and also the season that pests are at their most active. Common summer outdoor insect pests in New Zealand. There are several common insects that appear in large numbers during summer. Ants - Although ants are very irritating, the most common species of ants, the garden ant, is not known to carry any disease innately. But since they travel a lot and feed from multiple sources, it is possible that these insects might contaminate your food when they come into contact with it. Ants are mostly invisible as they build underground nests, but when they do come out they do so in large numbers. They feed on almost anything from food particles to dead insects and animals. Once food has been identified, invasion takes place very quickly. Identification of the problem is easy as the large numbers

that come out to feed can be easily seen. To prevent them from showing up in large numbers, close all food containers and clean up messes involving food or drinks. Rinsing beverage containers before disposing of them in tightly sealed containers will also help. Mosquitoes - These two-winged insects thrive in warm climates. They will thus multiply during summer to great numbers, enough to ruin any leisure activities outside your house. They are known to carry diseases which vary with the species of the mosquito. The diseases they spread range from filariasis to dengue. One of the world’s most dangerous diseases – malaria – is known to be spread by these insects. Mosquitoes have long, thin wings. And they are narrow bodied with long antennae. Females have more developed mouthparts and they prefer to feed on the blood of warm blooded animals while the males have rudimentary parts and only feed on nectar and water. Mosquitoes require water to reproduce as they lay their eggs there. It’s thus important that you properly drain your property and get rid of any containers that can hold water. Control is best done by getting rid of the mosquito breeding places. Hornets and Wasps - These insects are not known to transfer any diseases to

humans but their sting hurts. It may also be lethal to a small population of people (about one in thirty) who suffer anaphylactic shock due to toxins in the sting. They are a bit hard to identify as their black and yellow striping is mimicked by other insects to deter predators. The mimics are mostly harmless and include day moths, hoverflies and beetles that feed on nectar and pollen. The most common species of wasps in New Zealand are the German wasp and the Social wasp. In addition to their yellow and black stripes, wasps have two pairs of wings (the hind ones being smaller) and are less hairy than bees. Their body is also more pointed with a well-defined waist. Only the females have the distinctive long stinger which they can use multiple times, unlike bees. They build nests from chewed wood pulp. Houseflies - Probably the most annoying of all the insects. They hover around humans and food, spreading a multitude of diseases such as typhoid, cholera, dysentery poliomyelitis, viral hepatitis (A & E) to name a few. Flies reproduce very quickly with the female being able to lay up to 9,000 eggs in its lifetime. This means that in warm weather a small fly problem can escalate into a major headache in just a couple of days. Being one of the most common

insect pests, flies are easy to identify but a bit difficult to control. Hygiene is crucial as flies mostly feed on dead, decaying organic matter. Now that the days are getting warmer, Debug Nelson has been getting a lot more calls for spider and fly treatments. “It’s the time of year when pesky flies, ants and spiders start invading your home but you don’t have to put up with it,” says owner Shane Warland. “We are all about customer satisfaction – it usually only takes one treatment, but sometimes a job can be more difficult, so we keep at it until your home is pest free!” Shane has some practical advice about keeping pests away. “Trim back any trees which are touching your house as these can provide access for ants. Clean up after your dog, and use a compost bin for your grass clippings, as both these things can attract flies.” Shane is more than happy to chat about your pest problems and provide free quotes, so visit www.debugnelson.co.nz or phone Debug Nelson on 03 548 0121 to get in touch. “We are locals looking after locals.”

No Pests - With the warmer weather you may be getting some uninvited little guests; Argentine ants are small (2-3 mm long) and honey-brown in colour, while most other common household ants in New Zealand are black. Argentine ants are highly active in searching for food and their trails are often five or more ants wide. Unlike most other ants, they climb trees to get to food sources. Unlike most pests, ants require a multipronged approach to get them under control. www.nopests.co.nz have developed the X-it Ant programme which has been proven right here in NZ with products that are on spec with what the professionals use, just in handy DIY sizes.

extract pyrethrin, and it’s 100% natural. Easy and effective. The automated insect controller uses an active ingredient that is safe for people and pets. The Ecomist Dispenser dispenses a mist every few minutes to keep your home free of insects. Dealing effectively with flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches and ants, the Ecomist dispenser is mounted high on the wall and set to release small amounts of natural pyrethrin at regular intervals to kill and repel all insects. The dispenser releases droplets that are small enough to stay in the air, then natural airflow allows the mist to spread to all areas, controlling pests no matter where they are. Alternatively, the dispenser can also be filled with an odour neutraliser, Ecomist supplying numerous different fragrances such as warm blueberry muffins and the smell of spring flowers, to freshly brewed coffee and tropical coconut. Light Nelson submissions: Artists’ applications to feature as part of next year’s Light Nelson are now open. The community event showcases the wonder of light through a variety of venues in the central city. For more information visit www.lightnelsonevent.co.nz/ submissions/ Art flags for Nelson extended: A project inviting local artist to get their work on local flags is still ongoing after the deadline was extended. Dreamy exhibition comes to Nelson city gallery Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Four very different artists are coming together for a one-ofa-kind exhibition at Nelson’s Quiet Dog Gallery. ‘Pieces of a Dream’ opens this Thursday and runs until 16 November. Gallery owner Gill Starling has put together female artists Ann Braunsteiner, Fleur Woods, Frith Wilkinson and Hannah Melville, with the brief to create work that reflects what happens

in their sub-conscious. There are paintings of cloaks made of moths’ wings, stitched works that are gardens in full bloom, modern ceramic pieces that look like ancient artefacts, and layered multimedia artworks that play with ideas of gender and identity. Gill says, on one level, the four artists couldn’t be more different, but visitors to the exhibition will discover some common threads that link the work together. Nelson based Ann Braunsteiner is known for mixed media

works that have a dark edge and explore the human psyche. Originally from Austria, Ann moved to Nelson in 2009 and started painting in 2011. Gill says she wanted to create a dynamic exhibition and deliberately chose artists who have a singular style. “Sometimes a gallery might shy away from putting together diverse work. So, we thought, ‘let’s really change it up and make it exciting.” ‘Pieces of a Dream’ is on at Quiet Dog Gallery, 33 Wakatu Lane, from 17 October - 16 November.

Colourful creativity set to hit streets with parade Staff reporter The 25th annual Mask Parade promises to be a festival of colour and creativity when it pours through Nelson’s streets on Friday. Mask Parade and Carnivale coordinator Annie Pokel says the discovery theme will make for plenty of creativity. She says there will be about 300 masks up for grabs for

those wanting to join in on the festivities but may not have the means to make a mask. Annie says the night will culminate with music, dancing and the Piki Mai lighting extravaganza. To add even more anticipation to the event, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will sit on the judging panel. “I don’t think we’ve quite grasped the impact that might have.”

Annie says there has also been a fantastic response from the migrant community with a large contingent of Colombian refugees set to showcase their culture during the parade. A team of children got started on their mask creations during a workshop at Pic’s Peanut Butter World last week. The parade starts at 5.30pm from Montgomery Square with the Carnivale starting at about 6.30pm.

Crunch time for Mako Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Ten games, ten wins. Few could have scripted a more perfect run for the Tasman Mako in its quest for a maiden Mitre 10 Cup premiership. After going unbeaten in pool play the Mako must now knock out the defending champions Auckland in Blenheim this weekend. However, the big city boys will no doubt still be carrying psychological and physical scars from the 40-0 drubbing it suffered in Nelson in September. Losing Shannon Frizell to All Black duty early in the season did nothing to halt the momentum of the Mako machine which claimed first-up wins against Wellington and Canterbury. From there, Tasman were seldom threatened by opposition, easily dispatching the likes of Manawatu, Counties Manukau, Auckland, Northland and

Hawke’s Bay. While there were slight stumbles, the Mako repelled brave efforts from North Harbour, Waikato, Otago and Taranaki to maintain its perfect record. Tasman boasts a staggering differential of +277 and scored a total of 48 from a possible 50 points. They ran in 57 tries, made 156 clean breaks and beat 295 defenders. Leicester Fainga’anuku leads the try scoring charts for the Mako with seven while Will Jordan has made 781 metres. It was again a combination of attacking brilliance and set piece dominance in Napier on Saturday which provided the Mako with an ideal dress rehearsal for next week’s semi. The Mako downed the Magpies 47-28 to clinch an unbeaten run through Mitre 10 Cup round robin play, the first time that has been achieved since Auckland did so in 2007.

Geraldine’s lifelong love of netball Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The landscape of Nelson Netball would no doubt look very different today if not for its patroness Geraldine Hodgson. The stalwart has dedicated more than 50 years to the game she loves, wearing almost every hat possible. From player to umpire, president to pie maker, her influence is entrenched in the region. Geraldine’s legacy will also live on with an annual pre-season tournament named in her honour. The 81-year-old was a Nelson representative player from 1960-65 and has since served as treasurer, executive, draw steward, tournament director and fundraiser, going as far as selling cakes on the side of the road to keep the club alive. She then became president in 1989 until 1995. Despite her immense contributions, Geraldine’s passion has not wavered, and she can still be seen at Saxton on a Saturday supporting the up and coming generation of players. She is quick to dismiss

her achievements and says none of it would be possible without the support of her late husband Ray. “I was very fortunate in that my husband was just as keen on the netball as I am.” Born in Tapawera, Geraldine moved to Nelson as a 15-yearold where she soon got a team together. It was a different ball game entirely in the 1950s though, in fact, it wasn’t even called ‘netball’. Known as ‘nine-a-side basketball’, young women would don a shirt, tie, gym frock, stockings and school shoes to play. The court was outlined with salt to avoid slippages and when

tumbles did occur, the turf ensured they were as painful as possible. “We had to have to good firstaid kit handy.” Geraldine has overseen significant change in the game, including its name in the early 1960s. “It was all basketball, and then to catch up with other countries it changed to netball.” As the game began to grow in the region, Nelson couldn’t keep up with the demand and began creating makeshift courts in the Trafalgar Centre carpark. Geraldine’s commitment was unparalleled, arriving at the Paru Paru Rd courts at 7.30am rain or shine, often umpiring up to five games and finishing late

at night as she counted the canteen money. Geraldine oversaw and was instrumental in the move of Nelson Netball to its current home at Saxton

Stadium. However, the humble Geraldine reiterates she did not do it alone. “You can’t do these things unless you have a lot of support from others.”

Cricket business as usual for Stoke/Nayland Peter Grigg Nelson College vs WTTU Runs were very much at a premium at Ngawhatu where first round winners Nelson College hosted WTTU. A couple of minor scores from Joey O’Connor and Mason Thelin and a little rear-guard cameo from Cade Armstrong allowed WTTU to stutter through to 87. Big Jarrod McKay bowled with real venom to create early mayhem and his younger sibling Kaleb backed him up superbly. Veteran Armstrong was straight onto a line and length and he regularly picked up wickets. Josh Newport provided an admirable foil and WTTU took the punt of only using four bowlers as Sam Baxendine and Tom Cross finished things off. WTTU won by 15 runs. Stoke Nayland vs Falcons The Stoke Nayland innings was something of a stop-start affair with Darius Skeaping and the in-form Patrick Howes getting them away to a solid start but then requiring a rear-guard action from the reliable Dylan Eginton. Wickets were shared around among five of the Falcons’ bowlers, with Harry Boyce picking up a couple cheaply towards the back end of proceedings. The Falcons never really fired a shot in response as Ben Stark took

great delight in terrorising his former teammates. Skeaping and Howes both completed tidy game stats as the Red Machine carried on their traction. Stoke Nayland won by 107 runs. Wakatu vs Wanderers/ Motueka After a late start due to a wet outfield, Wakatu openers Tom Argle and Fergus Hughes quickly put Wanders/Motueka under the pump. For the second week in a row they conceded a century opening stand, as a solid batting effort pieced together a tidy total. Brad Smith hit four sixes in an aggressive effort coming in at number four while Devon Serrurier and Campbell McLean ensured Wakatu a defendable total. Although not

taking wickets, Max Mannering and Hayden Ogilvie shored things up at the bowling crease in the middle overs. Englishman Mannering displayed his allround wares with a nice little innings as Wakatu/Motueka begun hunting the tough target. Medium pacer Damian Aitken, however, had his own ideas about the run chase. He took charge of proceedings from over 19 and cut a swathe through the batting line up. Fresh from a tidy three wickets last week, Aitken doubled that toll to finish with a career best of six wickets. He was well supported in the field with some sprightly catching the pick of which was a one-handed screamer from ginger-headed flanker Hughes. Wakatu finished

with a comprehensive victory in just the 27th over. Wakatu won by 117 runs. Dolphins vs ACOB The Dolphins scored a threewicket win over Nelson side ACOB at Horton Park. After restricting ACOB to 172 from 46.5 overs, the Dolphins batted well to reach their target. Their bowling highlight came

from Josh Poole, with 4-18 from 10 overs, while Prabodha Arthavidu anchored their batting, amassing 77 from 127 balls before falling 20 runs short of victory. However, a quickfire cameo of 18 from nine balls from Joseph Timms alleviated the home side’s nerves, seeing them home with eight balls to spare. Dolphins won by 3 wickets.

New Caledonian star set to shine for Tasman United Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Football is a universal language. So, despite speaking no English, Tasman United head coach Jess Ibrom had no hesitation in signing New Caledonian international Jean-Philippe Saiko. The 29-year-old is a goal scoring sensation for his home country and has enjoyed a successful seven-year stint in France. Jean-Phillippe has netted nine international goals and was the top scorer in the New Caledonian League in 2013 with 25, a record that still stands. But the veteran was looking for a new challenge and when the call came to move to New Zealand he jumped at the chance. The striker didn’t have long to

find his feet in the region, having arrived on Thursday evening, had his first training on Friday and a pre-season game on Saturday. However, the whirlwind introduction hasn’t hampered him as Jean-Phillippe was the sole scorer during a 1-1 drawn friendly with Southern United in Christchurch. His partner, Deborah Ixeko, also travelled to Nelson to help settle him. Deborah says Jean-Philippe was looking to broaden his football horizons. “He would like a new experience and play at a higher level than he does at home.” She says Jean-Phillipe felt an instant connection to the region. “He loves the country and says Nelson is a beautiful area.” With Deborah set to return to

New Caledonia for work, JeanPhillipe will lose his translator, but she says it’s the perfect opportunity for him to learn English. “It is very difficult for him, but he wants to learn, he just loves football so he’s happy to adapt.” Ibrom says he will help JeanPhilippe acclimatise by immersing him in Nelson’s French culture. “We have already been to the Rustic Cuisine cafe, just to try connect him with as many French people as possible.” Deborah says Jean-Philippe is a popular figure back home and has a strong French fan base thanks to his goal scoring exploits with clubs Limoges FC, AS Majenta, Vendée Poiré-sur-Vie and Poitiers. Tasman United kicks off its ISPS Handa Premiership campaign on November 2 against Southern United in Dunedin.

GENERATIONS OF NELSON Brought to you by Marsden House German Settlement

Brothers Charles and Fedor Kelling arrived in Nelson from Germany on September 1 st , 1844. When setting out on the Skiold their strength of character was recognised, and although only in their early twenties, they were

given the deputy leadership of the immigrants. Finding themselves with 135 immigrants to find work for, they purchased land in Ranzau (now Hope). They lost no time developing it and provided work for 75 men and women.
