Don Carter may well be the longest serving greenkeeper in the country. The Richmond resident has been preparing the greens at Stoke Bowling Club for more than half a century, longer than anyone he knows in his vast network of greenkeepers. “I don’t know of anyone who has done 50 years,” he says. Don was recently honoured at the Nelson Sports Awards with a Rata Foundation Life Service Award. The 82-year-old says it was a rare moment of adulation in an often-thankless job. “You don’t get many bouquets.” A reluctant Don required some convincing to attend the awards. “It was quite an honour, it’s not my cup of tea, that sort of thing,” he says. “I’d just be quite happy to do my work and leave it at that, but I got pressured into it and said ‘yes’ in the end.”

Marina saga boils over Charles Anderson Frustration over the future of the Nelson Marina has boiled over as work on its multimillion-dollar redevelopment has stalled and a committee of boaties tasked with helping the process appears to have been sidelined. It is understood that work on the marina redevelopment, which Nelson City Council has earmarked about $5 million over the next decade, stopped in April after a change in council personnel and strategy. Work had been done with stakeholders to ensure an upgrading of pontoons, trailer park and hardstand, among other large-scale plans that are part of the three-stage project. However, only pontoons worth $375,000 went in last April. Work on the trailer park stopped around that same time, as well as work on the hardstand, which is only half complete. The Nelson Weekly understands that the work shutdown is due to a change in council strategy which threw out much of the designs that had been agreed upon with a group of local boaties, who came on board more than two years ago. Instead council has enlisted consultants to redo much of that work. Since last

Marina saga boils over FROM PAGE 1 April the bill for those consultants has ballooned into the tens of thousands of dollars. In 2015, council also spent $50,000 to develop the strategy plan through SLR Consulting. The strategy looked at the purpose the marina fulfils for the community and council, its development and management options, informing its direction for the next 10 years. Boaties spoken to by the Nelson Weekly expressed a dismay at the slow progress of the plan. It is sentiment echoed by councillor Pete Rainey, who is chair of the council’s central city working group that is dedicated to tackling issues that need a particular focus. “In my experience being in
The Nelson Marina redevelopment plans have been in the works for years. Photo: Jonty Dine. council, there has been countless strategies, proposals, reports and consultant reports, all of which appear to have led to not much progress, which is disappointing.” However, Pete says that he will doing all he can to progress the plans.
“I can say there is a genuine wish to get the hardstand issue sorted as soon as possible. For the trailer park, it is in council’s sights to try and progress that.” He says one of the real issues is the mix of commercial opportunities, recreational requirements and
building pressures from private boat owners to have a berth in the marina. “It is all growing which is great because we are a city beside the sea, however, there are huge constraints of available land.” Council’s group manager for community services, Roger Ball, says the trailer park will be sealed next year and the hardstand issue has been one with consents and “ensuring that the design will result in the right outcome”. The plan is to have consent applied for in December, with work completed by June next year. Work at the trailer storage area has not started as it is waiting on confirmation of the hardstand project. A full report on the marina situation is going to council in two weeks’ time.

Nelson lawyer takes legal action after flying ban Locally Owned and Operated
A Nelson lawyer has taken legal action against Air New Zealand after it banned her from travelling on the airline for a year, after a dispute about entry into the Koru Lounge spiralled. Anjela Sharma is seeking an interim injunction from the High Court at Auckland to overturn a one-year ban imposed by Air New Zealand, and is also seeking damages and costs. In a Statement of Claim filed with the court, Mrs Sharma said she and her family were travelling to India from Nelson in December 2018, when an Air New Zealand staff member asked for proof they were allowed to be in the Koru Lounge. She said they showed their business class tickets and were allowed to stay. But later in the month, Ms Sharma, who unsuccessfully ran for Nelson City Council in the last elections, claimed Air New Zealand wrote to her and alleged she and her family had been refused entry, went into the Koru Lounge without permission, and the family

Mrs Sharma said she wrote to then-chief executive Christopher Luxon, and later had replies from an Air New Zealand lawyer. In the interim Mrs Sharma had flown on Air New Zealand flights domestically and internationally with no issues. In July, about eight months after the initial issue, Mrs Sharma said she received an email from

the airline’s lawyer alleging an email from her was “insulting, aggressive and intimidating”. The next day, she said she received a letter advising that she had been banned from Air New Zealand services for one year. Around that date she said all of the pre-booked flights she had made and paid for already were cancelled unilaterally by the company. “The defendant’s actions have and will continue to cause significant financial and emotional harm to the plaintiff including: The loss of flexibility to travel to and with her family and... clients... financial harm to her business in an amount to be quantified prior to hearing... considerable stress, distress and humiliation,” the Statement of Claim said. Through lawyer Sue Grey and under the Fair Trading Act, Mrs Sharma has applied for an interim injunction from the court to direct the airline to cancel the ban, as well as pay damages, interest and costs. Air New Zealand said it would not be commenting. – RNZ

Warning after Legionnaire’s outbreak in Nelson region Staff reporter
Gardeners are being warned to protect themselves against Legionnaire’s disease after three cases in just eight days were confirmed in the region, and after an associated death in Dunedin last month. Four cases in total have been confirmed in 2019. There have been
53 cases in the region since 2010. Clinical director of public health Stephen Bridgman says that Legionnaires’ disease is a serious illness that can cause pneumonia and, in some cases, death. Potting mix is the most common source of the Legionella bacteria and it’s also present in inadequately treated spa pools. People most at risk of becoming
Locally Owned and Operated
infected are usually over 50 years of age, smoke, or have chronic illnesses that suppress their immunity. “Legionnaires’ is not passed from person to person, but people can catch it by inhaling soil or compost dust or droplets of water in the air,” Stephen says. “Most cases in our region are connected to soil, compost or
potting mix. At this time of year, when people are getting into their gardens more, we urge people to take care when handling these products.” Early symptoms can appear 2-14 days after exposure and are similar to the flu. He says anyone with these symptoms should see their doctor straight away and let them
know you have been handling potting mix, soil or compost recently. Early treatment is effective. “The Legionella bacteria also lives in warm water, so people who have spa pools need to properly treat their water and maintain their pools. Maintenance of hot water cylinders and cooling towers is also very important.”
Mitre 10 land set for development Staff reporter A long-time patch of bare land next to Mitre 10 Mega looks set to become a trades retail hub after a new owner stepped in to the buy the site. Gibbons Property Investments has purchased the entire 9ha, which includes Mitre 10 Mega and Speight’s Ale House. Now the company will look to develop the bare 4.5ha that is left. Chief executive Scott Gibbons says the company has been interested in the site for some time due to its unique central position between Nelson city and Richmond, on the main highway both north and south, and near the airport. “There is good demand for light industrial and trade
retail businesses to be based in this central location between Richmond and Nelson city – the roading restraints in and out of the city makes this site very appealing from a logistics perspective and it really is a pivotal location for those types of services, with a profile like no other,” Scott says. Scott says the company is careful when looking at developing sites to make sure it is meeting the needs of businesses in the region. They are also in the final stages of developing a commercial site in Lower Queen St Richmond which will see Sal’s Authentic New York Pizza, Mexican eatery Zambrero and Japanese restaurant Aki Kitchen setting up shop. Scott says they have a range of light industrial and trade retail
development proposals for the site to consider over the coming months. “Other interested parties include food and beverage, grocery, presenting a wide range of options for us to consider.” Gibbons Development Leasing Manager Braden Stanton says it’s positive to have Nelson Junction back in local hands and to have plans underway for new buildings on the site. “A large section of this site has been sitting empty with an unknown future for some time, so we are sure Nelsonians will be pleased there is a well thought out development underway,” Braden says. “We welcome expressions of interest from those businesses who would like to be part of this exciting new development.”

Council to pay for underpass Kate Russell
Nelson City Council will foot the bill for an underpass for the Railway Reserve, which is required for the new access road from the $125 million Coastal Views Lifestyle Development. At the council’s infrastructure committee meeting last week, there was a request for additional funding of $89,000 to go towards the underpass. Although the developer is paying for the design and construction of the access road and associated traffic lights, a condition of the consent is that council are responsible for the underpass. The total cost of the underpass project was estimated in
council’s quarterly report to be $519,000 including a 20 per cent contingency fund, exceeding the $430,000 allocated. The funding was under review with NZTA, but it was expected that half would be covered by them. Councillor Matt Lawrey questioned the expenditure. “I’m curious, how come [the developers] are paying for the traffic lights, but they are not paying for the changes necessary for the Railway Reserve to continue to be a place for people on bicycle and on foot.” Transport manager Marg Parfitt explained the project was “historic” with council agreeing to pay for any crossing point back in the early 2000s in order
to preserve any future southern arterial corridor - aka, the Southern Link. The original consent for the subdivision had the road coming down closer to Beatson Rd and did not cross the Railway Reserve, but added an “potential impairment” to any future corridor. “An agreement was reached that the access road would come out onto Waimea Rd which reserved the future arterial corridor, and in that agreement, council would pay for the crossing point,” said Marg. Work on the access road is already underway and the overall intersection upgrade, including the traffic signals, is expected to be completed by June 2020.

Jingle all the way to Stoke Locally Owned and Operated

YOGA FOR FOODBANK: Nelson yoga instructor Loren McPherson will be bringing some Christmas cheer to a free yoga session next month - in return, she is asking attendees to bring some food to donate to the Nelson Foodbank for Christmas. “Unfortunately, Christmas is not festive for everyone. It can be tough,” says Loren, a former social worker. “I’ve decided to try and help by offering a free Christmas yoga session to the community and, in return, all you need to do bring some food to donate in the spirit of Christmas.” Loren says the session will be “Christmassy and fun” and perfect for beginners. It will be held on Thursday, 19 December from 5.45pm – 6.45pm at the Saxton Netball Pavilion Rooms. Email lorensyoga@gmail.com to book your place. Photo: Kate Russell.
The inaugural ‘Jingle Bells at Greenmeadows’ is coming to town on Sunday, 8 December. Entertainment will be brought to you by Nelson City Brass, the Nelson Jazz Band and the Celtic Pipe Band with one hour of dedicated Christmas carols. There will be family activities, food carts and a kids’ zone. The big man in red will also be making an appearance for photos. Head organiser and Isel Market founder, Jo McCrostie, says it felt like the right time to create a big Christmas event for Stoke. “For the past two years we’ve had
Christmas carols at the market, and it’s been very well supported. So much so, that we’ve had too many people for the space.” She says the community has “really embraced” the idea. “People are really getting behind it. We’re doing it all on a shoestring so we’re really thankful to all the sponsors that have come onboard.” Jo says, if it’s successful, they hope to make it an annual event. “If we get it right, it’s only going to grow. It’s a nice place to kick off Christmas. I think it’s going to be a winner.” Jingle Bells at Greenmeadows is on Sunday, 8 December from 4 - 8pm. Cancelled if raining.

Emily loses locks for leukaemia Locally Owned and Operated
Jonty Dine Emily Olthof felt a slew of emotions as the 11-year-old watched her long brown hair fall to the ground last Wednesday. The Nayland Primary student opted to shave her head and raise funds for patient support programmes and cancer research. Emily managed to raise more than $2000 as she lost her hair in front of family and friends. She began to shed tears when the hairdressers began to lop off her locks.
“It was a mix of happy, scared and excited.” Upon revealing her new look to her classmates, comparisons to Katie Perry were drawn. “They are saying I look nice,” she said. “It’s a bit of a change, it feels different, I can’t feel any hair on my neck.” An overwhelmed Emily was a bit lost for words following the transformation but had no regrets. “I do not know anyone with leukaemia, and I have not lost anyone to cancer. I just want to do some good and support others in need.”

The pair started selling gelato in the

New market for Tahuna Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
A new boutique market is starting up in the heart of Tahuna next month - just in time for Christmas. The ‘Tahuna Gift market’ will be held every Saturday afternoon from 1 - 4pm in the Harley’s Pharmacy carpark from 7 December. Jewellery, essential oils, artwork, candles, crafts, food, produce and good quality second-hand goods will be on offer with 16 rotating stalls each week. Founder Rachel Greig, who runs the Rose and Luna jewellery studio in Tahuna, says she is hoping to fill a void in the suburb’s shopping offerings.
“I wanted to create an alternative destination for weekend shoppers that would showcase a diverse, creative and collaborative local marketplace. I hope it will be well supported.” She says the name for the market was inspired by her father, who was lost at sea when she was seven years old. “Obviously it needed Tahuna in the name and probably market - then we thought our father’s initials were TGM, so Tahuna Gift Market it was.” Rachel says they are still looking for more stall holders to be part of the market. Hospital staff raise money for Alzheimer’s: We have nothing but admiration for people who deal with this heart-wrenching disease, having recently lost hubby’s older sister after her sevenyear battle and with more siblings showing early signs. We were so grateful to be given the Alzheimer’s booklet/info which made us more aware and showed us how to interact with her. Please, wherever you live, please support these groups, as we never know - in years to come we may need the services ourselves. Alison Dodge
Heather and the staff are amazing! Heather helped me understand the disease so much more than I already knew, when I moved my mother up from Christchurch to be closer to me. Even working in a rest home,

myself, I gained so much more knowledge from Heather and the team in Nelson, which I am still using today! Awesome people to have around you! Helen Hills
I worked closely with a client and her CRPS and rehab exercises. It was truly an inspirational journey to see how hard some days can be. Great article, Sarah. Marnie Brown
‘They call it the suicide disease for a reason’: It's great to see some awareness of CRPS. Most people have never even heard of it, which makes it challenging to explain! Nicky Dowling
A good friend of mine was diagnosed with this a few years back. Unfortunately, he has since passed away. Suzy Andrew
I was diagnosed with CPRS after breaking my left hand, I was given all sorts of hand exercises and worked through the excruciating pain. One physio at the hospital gave me the most amazingly simple exercise that worked. It was to rub my hand backwards and forwards 10 times, five times a day, over a rough towel. It gets the nerves tingling and the blood moving. It’s painful at first, but I’m good now. Celia Zumbach
In April, I went in for carpel tunnel surgery on my right hand. It all went wrong and I was diagnosed with CRPS. Some days my hand is fine, other days I can't grip anything. Sadly, if people (friends) can't see an injury, they find it hard to accept (believe) you are in pain. Patsy Mayers I was diagnosed with this after injuries from surgery and internal damage. It’s a ridiculous illness, as some days you’re fine, but other days you’re a basket case in bed. The trouble is that on good days
you go flat stick catching up on all your chores, and then bam your brain and body react and next minute you’re in agony to the point of throwing up. It’s a no-win situation that just goes on and on. Maree Davidson
Vandals wreak havoc on baseball club: So disappointed to see these damaged. These grounds and all Saxton are such an asset to the area and to have senseless vandalism is disgraceful. Cameras? Wendy Davies
I live with this myself after what was meant to be a simple surgery. Five years on and it involves my whole right side and internal organs, it's been a tough ride. Sarah Robinson
Install cameras and add it to the security guard’s route. Lisa Wakelin
Awesome article. I was diagnosed 10 years ago after an accident but had symptoms from a previous injury quite a few years before. Charlie Reay-mackey Natureland welcomes in new additions: Welcome to all three. Great to have someone with Stephen’s experience at the helm. Frances Kemble Welch
Nelson Matters I had a busy weekend with the 125th Nelson Agricultural and Pastoral Show. I have had a stand at the show for 30 years and it is a great opportunity to catch up with the diverse range of farmers and growers from all corners of the region. I have never experienced Nelson’s rural community feeling so disheartened. They feel under attack on every front. The concerns were similar to those at the huge protest on the West Coast that I attended the previous weekend and the recent farming protest on Parliament’s steps. It has not helped that Government Minister Shane Jones dismissed farmers as “rednecks” and “whingers”.
Nor was it a good look that Agriculture Minister and West Coast MP Damien O’Connor refused to even attend the Greymouth rally attended by over 4000. It was by listening to individual farmers at the Nelson A&P show that I can see why they have become so angry. One farmer was almost in tears over all his stock being culled over Mycoplasma Bovis. He had faced months of bureaucratic delays in trying to get compensation to survive. I also heard frustration over new honey and whitebait regulations. Water was a hot topic. One couple, who are exemplary farmers, were cross over having to spend $1000’s renewing simple
domestic water consents. Others were frustrated that after recently spending $10,000’s on fencing waterways are now being told they had to be redone because a wider riparian margin was required. Another common concern was nitrogen limits that could not be practicably met. The other major concerns of farmers is over climate change. New Zealand has less than 1% of the world’s stock and it is not fair that they are the only farmers in the world facing a new climate change tax. Farmers were also critical that the Government is blocking access to some of the new biotechnology that could help them reduce emissions. A

further concern of farmers is the proposed new $3000 + taxes on 4WD vehicles and utes. We need to recognise many people need these vehicles to do their jobs particularly in New Zealand’s tough terrain. I worry that the Government’s policies and rhetoric is making New Zealand more divided. Town needs country as much as country needs town. New Zealand earns 65% of our exports from our primary industries. We only get to pay for our smart phones, modern cars, lifesaving pharmaceuticals and overseas holidays through these export earnings. We need to find a better way for-

ward. New Zealand does need to tackle the difficult issues like improving our water quality and climate change but we will not get there by demonising farmers. We need to acknowledge our most polluted waterways are in urban areas. The biggest growth in our greenhouse gas emissions is in cities. We all need to do our fair share. The Government needs to change its approach. They need to start listening to farmers. Policies need to be practical. They could learn from our A&P Shows which are all about bringing urban and rural New Zealanders together. Advert.

The power of social media has helped a local band bring one of the country’s biggest heavy metal acts to Nelson - and they hope there will be more to come. Wellington-based Beastwars are making their way to Nelson after local rockers, Deranger, ran a successful Facebook campaign to entice them to play the Top of the South. Now, not only will they get to see them play live - they get to share the stage with them at Club Paradox on 6 December. “We’re all massive Beastwars fans. The show will be one of the biggest heavy music events Nelson has seen in a long time,” says band member Matt Duncan. Matt says it all started when Beastwars put up a Facebook post asking which small towns would like to see them. “We jumped on this and set up a page called ‘Bring Beastwars to Nelson’. We had a really good response and they said they would look at coming if we got over 100 responses. We managed to get a lot more than that.” The acclaimed sludge metal group were recently nominated as finalists

for best group and for best rock album at the NZ Music Awards. Their latest record, IV, debuted at number one on the official NZ Music Charts in July. “Having a band of their calibre, who are incredible live, is a massive deal for Nelson fans,” says Matt. Deranger say they have made it their mission to put Nelson back on the tour circuit. “Nelson used to be a real hub for alternative music. The closure of a number of venues and small turnouts has seen the city getting bypassed by bigger acts. We want that to change,” Matt says. They also want to inspire local musicians to put bands together and start playing live. “There are a lot of great musicians here who hide out in their bedrooms or focus on recording music. We want Nelson to be buzzing with live acts across all genres.” For Deranger the show marks another step in their bid to become a nationally recognised act. “We hope it will lead to other opportunities with Beastwars and other touring New Zealand and international acts.” Beastwars are playing with support from Deranger and Dead City Joggers at Club Paradox on Friday, 6 December. Funeral home’s new owners embrace change but respect traditions
Shone and Shirley Funeral Director’s new owners, Alastair and Emma Hebberd, are delighted to be living back in Nelson and since taking over the business in early November, are looking forward to introducing a fresh approach while still retaining the funeral home’s traditional values. Alistair is a 5th generation Nelsonian and Emma was born and bred here. Their daughter Charlotte is 18 months old. “I like the tradition, history and heritage of Shone and Shirley and the fact that it’s the oldest company in the Top of the South, starting in
Shone and Shirley Funeral Director’s new owners, Alastair and Emma Hebberd (with daughter Charlotte). You are welcome to come down to the funeral home to discuss any aspects of funerals with them. 1862,” says Alistair. “So, its roots run deep in Nelson, but with tradition there’s
been a lot of change over the decades and today you have things like video tributes and live web streams which we can do, so it’s about keeping up with technology. These changes are always going to be ongoing, so it’s about building the funeral home from hereon in.”
The fulfilment of a lifelong dream
Alistair was just 5 years old when he started to take an interest in the industry. “My Mum and
Dad had one of the local flower shops and Mum would make the casket flowers for Shone and Shirley and Marsden House, the two funeral homes in town at the time. I liked the big flash cars and people walking around in suits, even though it’s only a small part of the job.” Alistair says his Mum put him through some therapy because she felt it wasn’t right for a young boy to want to hang around a funeral home. Nevertheless, from a school age, Alistair would run around to the flower shop and his Mum would ring the funeral home and if they were quiet,
he would help them out from time to time, with things like car washing. “Then when I hit college in 2000, they offered me a part-time position, cleaning the cars and the building, sweeping the street, trimming the caskets and so on. In 2003, I’d had enough of school, so I left, and they offered me a full-time position.” Emma and Alistair met at Teapot Valley where they were kid’s camp leaders. “Emma was the first girl I asked out and I’m pleased she said ‘yes.’ We got engaged in 2007 and got married in 2008. Only a few weeks into the marriage, I was up doing my diploma in embalming, which meant I was up in Wellington a lot that year doing study.” Meanwhile Emma, who is a primary school teacher, was working in the local community before going on leave to have Charlotte. “When she was about a year old, I went back teaching for one day a week.” In 2009, Alistair was offered a position in Blenheim. “We had been married for a year and we decided it was an opportunity to explore a bit and grow as a couple and as a family. I was employed as a funeral director and because I had my qualification in embalming, I was able to work in that capacity. I was there for around 10 years during which time I gained my diploma in funeral directing and eventually moved into the assistant manager’s role of the company.” Alistair says, earlier this year he

was approached by Damara, a funeral director, and Bev, the previous owner, to supervise Damara who was doing a funeral directing course. “That’s when I learned the business was for sale. Then everything just fell into place, including the sale of our home in Blenheim. We took over Shone and Shirley on November 1st.”
Help with any aspect of funerals
Shone and Shirley offer everything from cremation and burials to repatriations. “We have people who need to be transferred outside the region so we can take care of all the paperwork whether it’s in New Zealand or overseas,”
says Alistair. “We can help you design a farewell that is fitting and meaningful to you. “If there is someone in your family who is less technologically advantaged, we can put together the photo tribute, the memorial register, the service sheets, etc. We like to work with people regarding any aspect of organising a funeral. We want people to walk away and feel that we gave them a really good service.”
Spacious modern facilities
“When a loved one passes away, you can have a funeral, farewell or tangi which can be at home, at the graveside, in a church building or somewhere special to that
person, almost wherever you wish.” Shone and Shirley has spacious, modern facilities including a beautiful chapel which seats up to 160 people. “There’re also places like Annesbrook Church, The Headingly Centre, or the Trafalgar Centre. We have a small viewing room available where you can come and say goodbye to have your time of closure.” Shone and Shirley has a modern, private reception room, plenty of parking and a relaxed catering lounge where refreshments can be served.

sessions in the garden bar are proving popular too, with different entertainment every second week and sausage sizzle.” Scott says they have been listening to the locals and providing what they wanted. “We welcome ‘new blood’ and it’s great to see a real mix of ages.”
Having owned a design and build housing company in Christchurch for 16 years, Janelle and Scott Clark were ready for a change. After enduring the big quakes, the couple wanted to do something fun. “We are both social people who enjoy dining out and going to the pub, so we thought – why don’t we

buy one?!” says Janelle. “We thought of Nelson because we had always liked the region and, although we had also considered the Gold Coast, we chose Nelson,” says Scott. There were lots of different reasons the couple decided to buy the Turf Hotel in Stoke, which has a long history in the region. “The climate was definitely a drawcard, plus I have family who live around the corner – my nana and grandad used to drink at the Turf,” says Janelle. “We knew that Stoke was a tight knit community with awesome
locals who are very supportive, and it’s fantastic they have kept coming here because there’s always the possibility with a change of ownership that someone is going to come in and change everything.” Scott says, knowing that the business had done well in the past, has had good sponsorship and has done a lot for the community, was another deciding factor. Janelle says it was also the fact that Nelson-Tasman is a growing region, with tourism increasing by the year.
A pub for people of all ages Scott and Janelle are pleased to see younger people coming back to the Turf. “Since we took over the pub, we’ve been trying to change things up a bit, like on Saturday nights we’ve realised karaoke works well and it’s been pretty ‘chokka,’ bringing in people in the 25 to 50 year age range, which is great. Also, with our liquor license allowing us to stay open until 2am, our bands continue to play until 1.30am. Our Sunday arvo’
The Turf Hotel is a great place to come down for a cold beer or wine and enjoy some delicious pizza in the delightful garden bar or covered deck area which has been recently fitted with screens to shade you from the sun, wind and rain. “We do drinks specials, you can watch live sports, play pool (*free on Mondays and Tuesdays) or pinball, take a bet on a horse (full TAB facilities available), or why not try your hand at winning some pokies on one of our gaming machines? *Bar meals are available 7 nights a week.”
Family-friendly bar and restaurant The Bach Bar and Restaurant, which is separate to the Turf ’s main bar area, is the ideal place
to bring family or friends for an enjoyable meal on a warm summer’s evening, or pop in for a nice lunch. You’ll love the modernised décor and the light, spacious dining area with outdoor seating available. “We’ve invested in an executive chef - Jodie Lammas - who has considerable expertise, having been a chef for over 20 years,” says Scott. “We’ve put in new pizza ovens, so pizzas are now on the menu, plus we have an à la carte menu and kid’s menu available too. We have also just created a separate kids' area with TV and DVD’s at the far end of the restaurant.” *The Bach Bar and Restaurant is open for lunch and dinner from Wednesday to Sunday.

Shannon claims top sporting crown Jonty Dine Reporter

The world’s best lawn bowler has also been named Nelson’s Sportsperson of the Year for 2019. Shannon McIlroy won the top accolade at the Nelson Sports Awards on Thursday evening. In the glitziest night of the year for our local athletes, the city celebrated its most outstanding sportspeople at the 52nd annual awards held at Annesbrook Church. Shannon says it was a credit to his support team including his family, which have helped him get to the top. “It’s pretty humbling to be acknowledged for the efforts.” Shannon says the game has been a
huge part of his life. “I’ve been playing for 28 years, I was on a bowling green before I went to school, it’s just been imprinted on me. As I go through now, it doesn’t matter who I play, I still have that edge.” The world champion has played a whopping 360 matches for New Zealand Shannon also beat out world number one adventure racer Nathan Fa’avae, track star Craig Lautenslager and Central Stags skipper Greg Hay, who helped the Nelson Griffins win the Hawke Cup for the first time in 22 years, for Sportsman of the Year earlier in the night. Shannon was quick to congratulate the fellow nominees in his category. “We have some amazing talent here in Nelson for such a small area.”

Continuing the legacy, Fedor Kelling also contributed greatly to the success of the early settlement of Nelson. In 1853 he became Director of the Settlers’ Cattle Fair Association and secretary of the Agriculture Association for eight
years. Appointed a Justice of the Peace, he chaired the Waimea Roads Board, and was active on the Board of Education. Fedor served on the Provincial Council and was briefly a Member of Parliament for Waimea.

Sport Tasman CEO Nigel Muir congratulated the 83 nominees who have “tested themselves in the cauldron of competition”. “This evening reminds us of the simple truth that it’s not about the awards we win but a deeper self-reflection and measure of what we have put in.” Nelson rower Zoe McBride took out Sportswoman of the Year on the back of winning two world cup gold medals and gold in the world rowing champs in Austria earlier this year. Zoe claimed gold in the lightweight women’s sculls with teammate Jackie Kiddle which saw them both nominated for the world crew of the year. The Tasman Mako’s historic season keeps getting better as the side was named Sports Team of the Year. Facing the greens for 50 years FROM PAGE 1 By Jonty Dine Don Carter has been recognised in the past for his tireless dedication through the New Zealand Greenkeepers Association, but says this award ranks right up there. “It probably tops.” Don’s extensive career began back in the 1950s when he managed an orchard for a “bloke who was a bowler”. “We started going to the fruitgrowers’ tournament. I wasn’t a player at all, I had never had a bowl in my hand but that’s how I got into it and I rather enjoyed it.” Don’s boss gifted the then 24-year-old his first set of bowls and dragged him down to the club to join in 1960. “I’ve been here ever since.” While still managing the orchard, Don started assisting the club’s greenkeepers in his spare time. “We had a heap of soil in the shed and I went down and give them a hand because they were older fellahs, so I went and helped spread the soil.” Don would go on to volunteer for seven more years until he was offered an employed
Don Carter position. One thing led to another, and Don was soon advising other greenkeepers and managing two greens in Nelson, two in Richmond and two in Stoke. “It was a big job from daylight till dark, seven days a week.” While he has cut back on the hours, Don is still working seven days a week maintaining the two greens at Stoke. “I like to start early and get my work done,” he says. “I get down here at about 6.30am to have the greens ready for the first games at 9am.” He says working with plants, fertilizer and spray was ingrained in him at an early age. “I had a slight advantage because I’ve always worked on the land; my father was an orchardist.” Don has even had one of the greens at Stoke named after him.
However, despite being his pride and joy, the ‘Carter Green’ doesn’t get any better treatment that the other one. He has not only spent decades as a player, Don has also been a coach, selector, life member, president and patron. Don has won 16 centre titles and more than 30 club titles, both records which still stand today. He has also represented Nelson for 18 consecutive seasons and once finished a national tournament as the fourth best player in the country. However, his true talents passion lay on the surface and he retired as a player 12 years ago so he could dedicate himself to bowling greens. But no matter how perfectly Don prepares a green, there will always be players to blame it for their performance. After 52 years at the helm, Don admits his time as one of the country’s longest serving greenkeepers may be nearing an end. “I am probably at the stage now where maybe 12 more months and I’ll possibly retire from greenkeeping, but I have really enjoyed it. I don’t think there’s been one day I’ve ever woken up and thought ‘oh, I have to go and face those greens’.”
Keeping your electricity network safe and reliable We’re working on a significant project to replace some of the wires on our network.
In the 1950s and 1960s, a lot of development occurred to electrify the Tasman area. Power authorities of the time built about 1200km of new high voltage power lines to bring electricity to many people who had never had it before. Sixty or so years later, it’s time to replace some of these wires in order to keep our network safe. The ones we are replacing are made from light-gauge copper, which, like anything, can wear out over time – mostly through a process called annealing that can cause them to become brittle. Replacing wires is a difficult job that involves the use of heavy machinery and crews of line workers spread over multiple work sites. This makes it unsafe to do the work at night time. It also involves working on long spans of line, which means large numbers of people may be affected and more than one planned temporary power outage may be required to complete each job. Unfortunately some consumers will have their power interrupted more often than they are used to while we replace the wires. Sometimes we will be able to use one of our large generators to keep the power on but most of the time this won’t be possible because of the way the network is built. Shutdown notices will be mailed to the electricity account owners of affected properties in the same way we do for all of our planned outages. The wire replacement work will be spread over the next ten years in pockets located throughout most of our network area and it will take place alongside our normal routine maintenance programme. While the work will cause some inconvenience, it will keep the network in good condition so that a safe and reliable electricity supply continues to be available for all consumers in the Network Tasman region.

SportS Harriers: A field of 83 runners and walkers helped celebrate the 40th anniversary celebration of Summer Pub runs in Nelson, at the Prince Albert Hotel on Saturday. The winner of Saturday’s 7km race was Cliff Bowman in 24.59mins. He was also the winner 10 years ago and had only slowed by one minute over that time. Other runners to have maintained excellent running times from the race 10 years ago were: Tim Cross, Colette Read, Derek Shaw, Stu Hague and Fran Kerse. With such large turnouts at local events, the future of running and walking in Nelson looks very promising for the next 10 years leading up to the 50th Anniversary. Football: While its senior counterparts enjoyed an upset win on Sunday, the Tasman United youth side was humbled by Team Wellington at the weekend. Tasman went down 4-1 at Saxton Field, which sees them slip to fifth on the points table with four wins and three losses. This week sees the side travel north to take on Auckland City.

Peter Grigg The 110-over Senior Club Cricket begun on Saturday with a tense draw between ACOB and Nelson College, Car Company Stoke Nayland completing an emphatic result over Wakatu and Wanderers/ Motueka gaining their first victory of the season. WTTU v Wanderers/Motueka Tom Cross and Joey O’Connor gave WTTU their usual flyer and, at 72 for one after 13 overs, they would have been feeling relatively smug. However, the tight lines and lengths of the Wanderers/Motueka bowlers ensured that the wheels well and truly fell off at Jubilee Park as the home team was bundled out in the 46th over for a below par total of just 129. Logan Ogilvie, Max Mannering and Mitchell Grant tightened things up and wickets fell at regular intervals as WTTU failed to gain any further traction. O’Connor bowled tightly in his 14 over spell but a number of small partnerships were enough to steer the ship home and gain the combined team their first win with plenty of

ACOB v Nelson College While ACOB had the better of the day, it was a pesky Nelson College 1st XI who gained the most bonus points in a tense draw at Botanics. ACOB cobbled together a competitive 173 in 55 overs on a slow and low pitch. BJ Barnett batted well and Greg Chitty was looking good until he was superbly caught in an athletic one - handed grab by Ronan Restieaux. ACOB spinners Jake Milton and Barnett kept the screws on the schoolboys as the total quickly became out of
reach. Jonty Raxworthy put in a handy knock at the top of the order, but it was left to the tail to secure the draw. At nine wickets down and four overs to go, it took some resolute defence as Jacob Walters and Dimitri van der Colk blocked out a desperate ACOB unit in a tightly contested match. Car Company Stoke Nayland v Wakatu Car Company Stoke Nayland flexed their muscles with a mauling of the hapless Wakatu at Jubilee Park. Batting first they pieced together a formidable total in 55 overs. Veteran Kurt
Pahl and the reliable Ben Homan produced a solid base with an 81 run second wicket partnership. The real fireworks, however, were supplied by abrasive skipper Brendan Hodgson. He smashed ten boundaries and two sixes in a 41-ball flogging. Chasing the imposing score Wakatu never got going and lost wickets quickly and at regular intervals. Scorecards: ACOB 173 (BJ Barnett 48, Mason Lund 4/36, Kaleb McKay 3/30) Nelson College 103/9 (Jonty Raxworthy 44, Jake Milton 3/26, BJ Barnett 2/22) Draw WTTU 129 (Joe O’Connor 29, Logan Ogilvie 4/21, Max Mannering 2/18) Wanderers/Motueka 131/6 (Alex Brogan 28, O’Connor 3/29) Wanderers/Motueka won by 4 wickets Stoke Nayland 285/7 (Chris Dittmer 97, Brendan Hodgson 62, Jason Campbell 2/50) Wakatu 89 (Darius Skeaping 6/28) Car Company Stoke Nayland won by 196 runs

Tasman stuns Team Wellington Locally Owned and Operated
Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Tasman United kick started its season in stunning fashion on Sunday afternoon. After going 0-3 and anchored to the bottom of the table to start its campaign, Tasman stunned frontrunners Team Wellington with a 1-0 victory at Saxton Field. A Jean-Philippe Saiko penalty proved the difference in what was a feisty round four encounter. Jean-Philippe’s combination upfront with Jama Boss is beginning to gel nicely and the pair looked threatening throughout. “It feels great to get the first win of
the season and no better place to do it than here at home against one of the best teams in the league,” Jama says. Jama says, with the roster they have, it was always a matter of time before they clicked. “Hopefully there is more to come.” Jean-Philippe was outstanding throughout, putting the first shot on goal for Tasman. Tasman was peppered early on with Pierce Clark making several superb saves in goal. Yellow cards were shown regularly as both teams looked to dominate on defence. As tensions became more heated so too did the collisions, prompting the referee to speak to both captains.
Next it was Jama’s turn to find the back of the net, but was again ruled out. However, this time it didn’t matter as Team Wellington were penalised for taking down Jean-Philippe. Then the New Caledonian international coolly converted to break the deadlock
After 45 minutes of fierce football, the sides went to the sheds locked at 0-0. Jean Philippe looked to have struck early in the second as he thundered one into an open goal, however, it was disallowed due to his challenge on keeper Scott Basalaj.
after 60 minutes. Wellington hammered away in search for an equalizer but the host’s defence, led by Cory Vickers and Corey Larsen, was up to the task. Jean-Philippe was inches away from extending the lead as his header was tipped over the bar.
