Concerns over digs at historic sites Charles Anderson
The discovery of apparent dig sites at historic local homesteads has lead the Nelson City Council to warn alleged culprits that they may be at risk of prosecution under legislation protecting archaeological heritage.
Council staff have recently discovered potholes and small piles of turf at Isel Park, Broadgreen Gardens and Queens Gardens, creating a hazard for staff and the public “as well as potentially damaging a historic site”. “This is our city, our place, our
heritage and we want to take care of it,” says council group manager of community services Roger Ball. There have been allegations circulating that those responsible are metal detectorists looking for historic items at the sites. As pre-1900 archaeological sites,
Isel Historic House and Park and Broadgreen Historic House and Park are protected under the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014 and Resource Management Act 1991. Roger says any work that may affect an archaeological site must first be approved by Heritage
New Zealand. “As such, potholes or piles of dug-up turf could be considered vandalism and the offenders risk prosecution under the act.” He says that if a member of the public notices any such damage, it can be reported directly to Heritage New Zealand.
Hot frocks on show at races Jonty Dine The hotly-contested Fashion in the Field saw punters dressed to the nines at the annual Summer Racing Festival in Richmond. Men’s winner Andy Wonderley says his outfit, complete with matching socks and undies, was thrown together the night before. “It was pretty last minute but I go to the races a lot back home in the UK and it’s a massive thing back there, so I thought I’d dress up and make a day of it.” Judge Ange Leonard says they were looking for something different this year which they certainly got with Julie Penman’s avian-inspired headwear. “She had an amazing hat and a well-coordinated outfit.” Ange says the young ones also looked the part. “The kids were so cool, especially the little dude. He had some attitude too which we loved.” When it came to picking a men’s winner, Ange says “the suit always wins”. Nelson’s transport to be decided Woman assaulted A long-running impasse over the future of Nelson’s transport network could be decided this year. The Nelson Future Access project aimed to solve more than 30 years of debate, with feedback to be invited soon on the concepts developed so far. The Transport Agency described the current transport system as an “hourglass” as it was in a highly-constrained geographic environment, with hills on one side and Tasman Bay on the other. It said Nelson and Tasman were growing regions, with a population expected to increase by between nine and 25 percent over the next 30 years. The growing demand for travel was being squeezed through two arterial roads that must function as “all things to all users”. The current project focused

Mayor Rachel Reese said it was progressing well and she hoped it would be a turning point towards a workable solution. Reese said the project looked at short-term as well as longterm fixes that took into account future transport trends, and the city’s connection to its waterfront. The Nelson Waterfront Action group has long
believed the only solution was to move the state highway off the waterfront and through an area of the city fringe. Spokesperson Jeremy Matthews said that shifting the highway was contentious because people did not know what it might look like. The Transport Agency said feedback on the potential project packages that have been developed would be invited from March or April this year, and it would then advise on a recommended package in June. – Tracy Neal of RNZ

Police are searching for a person of interest after a woman was indecently assaulted in a large crowd during the final act of Bay Dreams. Police say the incident took place in front of the main stage while the final band of the night was on stage at Trafalgar Park. The woman was among other concert goers in the middle of a large crowd between 10pm and 11pm on Saturday January 4. A police spokesperson says they are looking to identify a man who may be able to help with enquiries. He is described as “aged in his mid-20s, 6ft to 6’3 (or 190cm) tall of lean build with a sun-tanned complexion,” says the spokesperson. “The man was wearing a distinctive high visibility orange mesh vest and he may have been with a group of similar aged males.” If anyone knows this man they are asked to share any information with Detective Neil Kitchen, Nelson CIB on (03) 546 3851.

Brook Sanctuary confirms entry charges Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary is planning to start charging visitors in the first quarter of this year. Nelson and Tasman residents will pay a reduced entry fee compared to out of towners and this is estimated to come into effect after the sanctuary’s new foot bridge opens next month. The move comes after the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust, which runs the sanctuary, missed out on Nelson City Council funding of $50,000. The trust already receives $150,000 a year from council. Chief executive Ru Collin says it’s been a growing reality that they would have to start charging the public and currently, entry is by donation. “We’ve been planning for it and we’ve been more than just talking about it. I know it’s a community project and there’s a big element inside the sanctuary whanau that would probably prefer not to, but it’s becoming a reality that we will need to move to that direction.” He says they are looking to set rates for out-of-towners at $15 for adults, $8 dollars for 15 years and under and $40 for a

But for locals and those with community service and student ID cards, it will be half the cost. The adult entry rate will be $8, $4 dollars for 15 years and under, and $20 for a family. All under-fives are free. Mayor Rachel Reese has previously noted that the sanctuary has gone through a “very challenging period”, with court proceedings against an anti-poison group, slips which damaged the predator-proof fence, and the council’s own reserve management process which she said was “less than desirable”. The sanctuary had also been looking to introduce rowi (brown kiwi) this year but decided not to due to predator
breaches. Ru says that visitors will also have the option of joining as a supporter, which gives people unlimited access into the sanctuary for a whole year. “We’re encouraging people to join, and we have an annual individual fee of $50 and a family fee of $100. We’d rather people take that approach and come up and use the sanctuary as much as they can,” says Ru. “People that are coming out of the sanctuary seem to be really happy - we’ve got a visitor centre manned by some committed volunteers and we really want to connect the community with nature.” Over the school holidays the sanctuary is open every day from 9am – 6pm, with a latenight Wednesday until 9pm.

Urging local water Children awarded safety this summer Lotto win Locally Owned and Operated
Matt McCrorie
Staff Reporter
The warmer months are here, and one of the biggest safety concerns for the summer each year is around water safety. Lisa Stanley, Swim Magic Team leader at the Richmond Aquatic Centre, says that no matter how often you swim, it’s important to be conscious about safety around all our waterways. “Children always need to be supervised. They should stop and ask their adult if it is safe to go into the water. An adult should always be within arm’s length.” Tasman Police are also encouraging the public to be responsible when getting out on the water, after two recent search and rescue incidents. “Boating, kayaking, swimming, diving and other water-related activities are popular during summer but it is imperative people respect the water, be safety aware and always communicate their whereabouts,” says Tasman Police Search and Rescue coordinator, constable David Cogger. On Christmas Day, a person was reported missing in the Motueka River and a Search and Rescue operation commenced immediately involving the Tasman Bay Swift Water Rescue team, a local jet boat operator, Fire and Emergency NZ and Police volunteers. However, the missing
Four children have been awarded $1.25 million each after going to court to claim some of their estranged Nelson father’s Lotto win. In 2009, David Wayde Carson won $16.7m with a winning ticket and told only one other person. When he died in 2015 he made no provision in his will for his children or six grandchildren, who didn’t learn of his death for about two and a half years. So, last month, Carson’s four adult children took a case to the High Court at Nelson. Now all living in Australia, they argued for 20 per cent of their father’s estate, which included property, farm equipment and $300,000 worth of shares and current account funds in a brewery. The judge said, apart from when they were young, Carson’s children received no financial support from their father during their lifetime. “None of the children is now in a particularly healthy financial position and retirement is not too far away.” Justice Thomas awarded each of Carson’s children $1.25m. “That sum would be life-changing for the children but would not defeat Mr Carson’s wishes,” she said.
Richmond Aquatic Centre lifeguard Jake Hogg and Swim Magic team leader Lisa Stanley are cautioning locals to take extra care in and around the water this summer. Police say people heading out on the water should take some simple steps to protect themselves and others and avoid emergency services being called out needlessly. This includes ensuring that boats are properly equipped with life jackets and at least two forms of communication onboard, such as a cellphone and a VHS radio.
David also says it’s important to tell people where you are going and when you should be returning. “People heading out into the water also need to keep an eye on conditions and changes in weather, stay well within their abilities, treat the water with respect and caution, and avoid alcohol. “Police want everyone enjoying themselves on the water this summer to stay safe, aware, and well equipped.”

These initiatives include an increased ambassador and enforcement programme, additional waste management

Nelson still sunniest city: For a second consecutive year Nelson has claimed the crown of New Zealand’s sunniest city. NIWA’s annual climate summary says the Nelson region experienced 2859 hours of sunshine, followed by Marlborough (2799 hours - Blenheim) and Hawke’s Bay (2709 hours – Napier). The year also saw Nelson’s fourth-longest period without rain since 1862. The city endured a 40 day dry-spell while January also saw Nelson’s fourthhottest day since 1862, with mercury on January 27 reaching 32.9 degrees. 2019 was New Zealand’s 4th-warmest year on record, with the nationwide average temperature for 2019, calculated at 13.37°C–(0.76°C above the 1981–2010 annual average).
Police operation nabs drivers: More than 8,000 drivers around Nelson were stopped and breath-tested by police in the early new year in a large-scale road policing operation. Between 3 and 5 January Nelson Bays and Canterbury Road Police Impairment Prevention Teams conducted checkpoints testing for alcohol and drug impairment around the Nelson area, including on the highways and around popular summer destinations and beaches. As a result, ten drivers will be appearing in Nelson District Court over the coming weeks for driving with excess breath alcohol, each facing a minimum six-month disqualification along with a substantial fine. A further 11 drivers were handed instant $200 infringement notices and received 50 demerit points. All 21 drivers received an immediate roadside suspension. Terms & conditions apply
Nelson City Council has rolled out the welcome mat for visitors after transforming a former petrol station into a freedom camping hub. The facility, which was funded by $250,000 from the Government, was originally proposed for Tahunanui, but stern public opposition forced the council to look elsewhere. The unused area at 20 Halifax Street, formerly the Z Service Station, was chosen as the location for the temporary daytime facility. It began operation on January 8 and will be open through to February 28. The facility will provide a waste station, toilets and showers for tourists. Council says it will be staffed to ensure the site is used responsibly and will not be available for overnight use. French travellers Camille Forest, Thomas Stahl and Thebaud Rambete were in desperate need of a shower
and recycling services, a user survey and the creation of a temporary daytime facility for visitors with non-selfcontained vehicles. Chair of the Sports and Recreation Committee, Tim Skinner, says that by increasing their ambassador and enforcement programme, they can help ensure everyone has a positive experience. “The MBIE fund enables us to not only extend the services we provide visitors to our city over summer, but also ensure that they have the correct information on where they can spend the night in their vehicles.” Total estimated spending by visitors to New Zealand who said their visit included some freedom camping has increased significantly in recent years, from $210 million in 2013 to $540 million in 2018. According to MBIE, these visitors spend half as much per day but stay three times as long, meaning they tend to spend more per visit than those whose visit did not include some freedom camping.

Nelson to Richmond bus service expanded Matt McCrorie

Caravans to fight housing crisis Matt McCrorie Prospective homeowners in Richmond might be in for a bit of luck, thanks to a new small home housing project in Richmond. The new managers of Queen Street Holiday Park, on lower Queen Street in Richmond, are setting up ‘Static Caravans’ in their camp. The Static Caravans are designed to look like tiny homes and will be parked permanently in the camp. The campground, which has been running for seven years, has more than 60 permanent residents, and manager Vicky McDowell says that it has a strong sense of community already. Nikki Ryan, the agent working with the campground to sell the caravans, says that the 30 units have been made specially to fit in with New Zealand building
specifications, including insulation. The large caravans are threebedroom units, with two bathrooms and a kitchen and living space. “It’s a great way for people, in an increasingly expensive area, to own something,” says Nikki. Vicky and Wayne McDowell, the managers of the campground, say that they have seen how the housing crisis can hit families and that these new units may be able to provide an opportunity for those who want to own their own home, but can’t afford the increasing prices in the region. “We want people who aren’t hugely wealthy to have a shot at owning something and having a good lifestyle,” says Nikki. The caravans come complete with appliances, making move-in costs low, says Nikki.
Prospective buyers would be looking at an asking price of $189,950, as well as paying a weekly fee for the land at the campground. Vicky and Wayne said that it was important for the camp to maintain a community aspect, and an electric vehicle, a motor home, and a boat will all be available for use by camp residents. “The camp owner wants to create a wonderful environment for you offering a champagne lifestyle on a beer budget,” says Nikki. “With the way the housing market is going in this area, people are having to find other ways to own, and this is an option for people.” The camp expects the static caravans to be on-site approximately May/ June 2020. The listing is available to view on Trademe.
Two new bus routes through Richmond will help to get the town moving, says the Tasman District Council. In 2017 the Tasman District Council began looking into possible bus routes to expand the already existing Richmond to Nelson service. A Richmond bus loop was determined to be the most feasible option. Come June, there will be two routes for the Bus Loop, an eastern route and a western loop. The eastern loop would have key stops along Washbourn Drive, Chelsea Avenue, Hill Street, Champion Road and Salisbury Road, while the western loop would have stops along Lower Queen Street, Berryfield Drive, Gladstone Road, Bateup road and Wensley Road. Tasman District Councillor Dana Wensley says that the two new bus loops are a huge step for Richmond. “This is really the first piece in our transport puzzle. As Richmond grows, we will have to change the way we move around. That includes more
bus services, and better options for walking and cycling.” Dana says that congestion has been one of the key issues facing Richmond residents, and was a major concern in last year’s local body elections. The proposed bus loops would take 15-25 minutes to complete and would be timed to arrive five minutes prior to the bus services departing to Nelson in the morning, and depart 5 minutes after Nelson services arrive in the afternoon. At this stage, council staff are working towards a start date in June 2020, with the aim of timing the start date with implementing a new electronic ticketing system. The total cost of the service is estimated at $200,000 a year, with bus fares making up 50 per cent of the funding, with $51,000 coming from the New Zealand Transport Agency and the remaining $49,000 coming from the council. One of the key considerations for planning the possible routes was passing near retirement villages, as well as ensuring that travel times complement the Richmond-Nelson service.

MarchFest returns bigger and better Staff Reporter Now in its 13th year, MarchFest is spreading its wings at Founders Heritage Park, using more of the available spaces to create new and revitalised zones for the boutique beer festival. MarchFest has grown from its first foray at Founders Heritage Park with 400 attendees and four beers on offer, to attracting a crowd of up to 4,000 people, and generating over $3 million into the local economy. This year, the event will be held on Saturday 14 March, from noon until 9.30pm. It was started by friends Mic Dover and Eelco Boswijk in 2008. The pair say they wanted to create a boutique beer festival with a friendly vibe that welcomed women, families and ordinary beer drinkers, not just beer geeks. “We’re really proud that our original vision is alive and well, with a good cross-section of the community making it their ‘must do’ event every year,” says Mic. This MarchFest will see a new dedicated children’s area and the event moving into a new grassed zone where tasting paddles of 5 beers will be available. With 15 beers available on the day, Mic says the tasting paddles allow people to sample more of the craft beers on offer. A live music line-up has always been a key feature of the event, with familiar names and some new upbeat acts. This year, Kiwi legends The Chills are headlining the event. The much-loved Dunedin band released a new album, Snow Bound, in 2018 to critical acclaim. Lead singer Martin Phillipps says, when his band performs at

Kite festival soars to 30 Kate Russell
A giant teddy bear, a school of fish and a waddle of penguins are set to soar over Neale Park this weekend in what will be a milestone event for the Nelson Kite Festival. The festival is celebrating 30 years with their first ever two-day event - but despite its popularity, it hasn’t been an easy three-decades according to organiser Ted Howard. “At the height of the Nelson Kite Club we had 30 to 40 members, now there is just a handful of us. We get by, just. We rattle the donation bucket and that’s what we scrape by on.” The event used to be funded under Nelson City Council’s summer events programme, but Ted says they were “pushed out” over 20 years ago. “We haven’t been able to convince the council about the importance of this event. We’ve barely got enough funds to pay for the minimum. Last year we had neighbours rattling the donation buckets.” He says it’s up to public support to keep the event going. “It’s a challenge and it’s hard work. We’re not getting younger, but as long as people show up, we’ll keep running it. If everybody brought a gold coin along, we would really appreciate it.” And why does he keep doing it? “I guess we are just crazies - people call us ‘Tako Kichi’ which means ‘kite crazy people’ in Japanese,” says Ted. “When we get a nice sea breeze and can pack the sky with colour and dance, people just go ‘wow’ and instead of coming for half an hour they spend the whole afternoon there. It’s about getting out there and having some fun.” The Nelson Kite Festival is on 18 and 19 January at Neale Park from 12pm - 5pm. There will a field for public flying along with buggy rides and public displays. Anyone wanting to help with the festival or donate please contact Ted on 021 238 6450.

Every few weeks we sit down with someone with a story to tell at Burger Culture. We call it ‘Burgers, Beers and Banter’. This week we speak to Vic Brew Bar operations manager Howard Williams who is leaving the establishment after almost ten years. How did you come to be running your own bar? I am the operations manager and co-owner of the Vic and Burger Culture. Our family owns both. I was 20 when I moved up from Queenstown where I worked in a couple of bars. We took over in 2010. It was a brave move from the old man, he has pitted everything on his four kids to try and make something happen here and, so far, we have been able to run it pretty successfully. So, it’s a family business? My sister runs Burger Culture and I look after this place. My great grandad and great, great grandad owned pubs in the Black Country, one of which is still going today. We didn’t plan it this way but we found out we were good at it and stuck to it. The main part of our success has been down to the family being so strong, we educate each other every day, stick by each other through thick and thin. The other success has been the people of Nelson.
What is your signature drink? Whenever I go to another bar, I usually ask for an Old Fashioned, especially on holiday. I’m in love with them. Can’t get enough of them, no matter what day of the year it is. People get uncomfortable asking for a drink like that but whenever someone does, I think ‘yes, I’m sick of pouring pints, I want to make a proper drink.’ Why have you decided to sell? We have all poured our blood, sweat and tears into this place, so it is sad, but if we want to grow the business that we feel is where our passion lies, which is Burger Culture, then we have to get rid of it. Hopefully it goes to a good operator who will do something cool with it. There will be a lot of tears shed, it’s been a lot of stress, but nothing but good memories. If anyone wants to buy a pub give us a call. What have been some of the most memorable moments during your time behind the bar? We were having a wrap party for

There were chocolates all over the table which he helped himself to, so I asked him to leave not knowing he’d stuffed these chocolates in his pockets. Before I knew it, he lobbed a handful into my face. It took me a second to figure out what had happened. I collared him and dragged him out. He then realised he’d actually thrown
his room key as well. He came back knocking on the door at closing time, asking for it, but because of the way he had behaved I told him I didn’t really care about his room key. He started kicking in the door, so we called the police and it turns out there was actually a warrant out for his arrest and away he went. You have to smile and laugh about it. Your Voice Retirement: Andrew Rose (8 January) most certainly writes of a dismal retirement. His ‘full misery’ with cellphones blighting social arrangements, finding Christmas ‘more stressful to celebrate than working’, his lack of desire to exercise, his difficulties with daytime TV decisions regarding advertorials, his ‘constant anxiety’ over which death insurance to get - and then he finishes by saying not all of these problems respond to ‘antibiotics’. In my retirement (although I’ve just turned 65) I rarely have a problem socialising with my cellphone, for if I want to ‘socialise’ I often leave my phone either at home or in my car. Christmas is usually an easy event to organise as there are a few of us in my family and we share the loads of shopping, cooking and cleaning up, and there is no problem with socialising at this ‘family-friendly’ event. For exercise, I have fifteen steps up to my apartment which are a breeze now I’ve had both my hips replaced. I also have a bicycle which folds to fit is the back of my car so I may drive in the city and ride on the many peaceful bicycle tracks. Difficulties with TV don’t occur as I haven’t had a TV set for more than 10 years - so I talk to people, read books, draw and write instead. As to death insurance - my mother died at 92 and my father died at 85. With all their relatives being
‘relatively’ long-lived I am fairly assured my ‘fate’ shall be similar. As to death insurance? I have an investment account to cover my burial and have opted for a ‘natural burial’ in Golden Bay. Antibiotics are such a rare thing in my diet. I find socialising with friends and family and meeting new people are far more to my liking. Roll on my ‘retirement’ years. Genie Em

Zealand’s first An appetite for New ocean farm divides food truck comp submitters Kat Duggan Nelson food trucks are being challenged by their Marlborough counterparts as part of a new competition. The Wine Station in Blenheim will host an inaugural battle of food trucks in a bid to find the best food truck in the Top of the South. Station manager Michelle Osgood says the event will also take advantage of 2020’s ‘extra Saturday’, falling on February 29. She has been mulling over the ‘The Food Truck Off; Battle of the Whangamoas’ for around six months. “We have had a lot of food truck events in the last two years, since we have been open, and we just wanted something that would sort of bring some different people to town,” she says. “We also just wanted to get people together and have a street event, and that was the only way to do it.” Open to food trucks based in Marlborough and Nelson, Michelle is hoping to attract around 20 to 30 operators. A trophy is being made and

It is also hoped that the event will attract more people to the region. “I sort of envision that the food trucks will also get their followers to come along; the more of your own followers you have got, the more votes you’re going to get.” Entry to the event will cost $10, with funds raised going to the
Blenheim Rotary Club. Running from 12pm and 7pm, it is hoped the event will appeal to both lunch and dinner time crowds, Michelle says. “It’s really cool. I’m pretty excited, and I’m overwhelmed at how excited other people are,” Michelle says. “It’s an extra Saturday that no one knew they had.” Those interested in entering The Food Truck Off could contact Michelle directly via The Wine Station’sFacebookpage, orviaemail; michelle@thewinestation.co.nz

An application from the country’s largest salmon farming company to start farming fish in the “open ocean” has divided opinion, with some calling it an “innovative milestone”, but others labelling it “premature”. New Zealand King Salmon wants to set up a 1782-hectare farm off Marlborough and eventually farm 8000 tonnes of king salmon a year in the colder waters. It lodged a resource consent with the Marlborough District Council last July asking to build the ocean farm. Thirty-three people and organisations wrote in support of the application - four of which says they had a personal link to NZ King Salmon in their submission. Five organisations opposed the application, citing inadequate research from NZ King Salmon. Those opposed were Ngāti Kuia, the Department of Conservation (DOC), think-tank McGuinesss Institute, volunteer group Guardians of the Sounds, and community organisation Friends of Nelson Haven and Tasman Bay. But residents from Wellington, Auckland, Nelson and
Marlborough wrote in support of the application, saying it was an “environmentally sound proposal” that would deliver “green jobs”, “economic benefits” and “sustainable food” to the region. Salmon thrive in colder water, ranging between about 11 to 16°C. King Salmon lost a significant amount of fish in 2018, due to warmer sea temperatures. Both Marlborough’s and Nelson Tasman’s Chamber of Commerce branches and the Marine Farming Association backed the application, saying it would help the Government meet its target to turn aquaculture into a $3 billion industry by 2035. NZ King Salmon chief executive Grant Rosewarne says in a press release he was glad some individuals and groups had the same concern for the environment as his company. “The council’s independent experts have carried out an initial review of our application and have asked for further supporting information, which we are working on,” he says. - By Chloe Ranford, Local Democracy Reporter

Big Brothers Big Sisters is an organisation making a big difference in young people’s lives, creating lasting bonds and opportunities through mentoring. There is a waiting list of 45 young people aged 6 – 12 years of age, who would love someone to go for a walk on the beach, kick a ball or play a board game with them. You don’t need to change your life to change theirs, and the only skill you need is being you. One to four hours a week is all it takes to make a real difference. These kids just need
somebody to show up, show they care and be a consistent, positive influence in their lives. kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz Queens Gardens will be turned into an outdoor art gallery this Saturday for Art Group Nelson’s annual summer exhibition. The one-day-only event has been running for more than 30 years and around 50 exhibitors will be selling their original works - including glass artist, Emily Lake. Although Emily has been creating her unique glass jewellery and sculptures for 42 years, this will be her first time exhibiting her work at Queens Gardens. “It’s always hard to get in as it’s so popular. I’m really pleased to be part of it this year.” Emily says she learned the art form in her late teens when she was
apprenticed as a flamework assistant in the North Island. She uses a technique called lampworking, where a torch or lamp is used to melt the glass before it is formed by blowing and shaping. President of Nelson Art Group Nicole Russell says the exhibition is a great way to experience a variety of work from local artists in a “lovely setting”. “We’ll have different glass forms, textiles, woodwork, jewellery, mosaics and paintings, using all types of medium. The exhibitors are with their work and enjoy talking to the public about their techniques and art practice.” The exhibition is on this Saturday, 18 January from 10am - 5:30pm (Sunday 19 January if wet) at the Hardy St entrance of Queens Gardens.

Kendra claims the Nelson Cup Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Nelson’s biggest weekend of racing has come and gone with Cantabrian Blair Orange claiming its biggest
prize. The Nelson Harness Races Summer Festival saw thousands of punters testing their luck at the track over the twodays. Blair took out the Nelson Cup on Friday, driving
four-year-old mare, Kendra. They pipped RocknRoll Rod by .3 seconds in a thrilling race at the Richmond Showgrounds. RocknRoll Rod held a comfortable lead for majority of the 2400m but
Kendra’s superb run in transit saw the favourite storm home in 3 minutes 44.2 seconds to win the $14,000 purse. Blair says it was a huge result for him and Kendra who just “gets better and better”.

The conditions seem to get better each week of the Port Nelson Sea Swim Series. In Thursday’s races, 149 competitors completed triangular courses of 1250m or 500m. Most of the fast, young swimmers had gone to Lake Taupo for the New Zealand Open Water Championships, so you’d expect the door to be wide open for some upsets. However, Luke Kelly, Oxford Bayley and Hayden Squance were leaning firmly on the door in the long race, shutting out the strong team from Aquagym in Linwood, Christchurch, who were holding their annual training camp here in Nelson and arrived in numbers. Aquagym swimmers dominated the short course over about 500m. In the long swim of 1250m, Louis Clark of Aquagym joined Luke, Hayden and Oxford in the lead bunch, heading into the current for a 600m slog south, before turning for a tidepropelled surge back to the yacht club ramp via the dolphin. Luke and Louis led at this point, but took divergent courses, Luke and Oxford coming together at the final offshore buoy. Luke took it by a second from Oxford, with Louis 26 seconds back and Hayden right on his heels. Aquagym’s Kiri Atkin squeaked into the top ten to claim the first women’s spot ahead of Flossie Van Dyke and Christina Harris, who headed to Taupo in the morning for the New Zealand Open Water Swim Championships. Aquagym swimmers dominated the short swim, although it was obvious they hadn’t listened closely to the briefing. The lead swimmers swam past the final buoy to a further marker and half the field followed them, but it didn’t affect the results, with Taylor Chamberlain, Ollie Lutton and Eli Wilson taking the first three spots ahead of Thomas McCallum and Victoria Ellis, the first female swimmer. Lily Hall, Emily Barron and Olivia Huata-Findlay were the next women to finish.

MASTER’S Sam and Simon Phillips won the 2019 Rapaura men’s title. Photos Peter Jones.
Double delight at Rapaura as twins take out titles Peter Jones Spectators at the finals of the annual Wairau River Rapaura doubles tennis tournament could be excused if they came in Marlborough away suffering from double vision. In a unique occurrence, both the men’s and women’s finals of the popular festive season event, staged on December 28-29, were this year won by twins. Identical siblings Sam and Simon Phillips took out the men’s title, while the local combination of Jade and Kyla Otway came away with the women’s crown. The Phillips, Sam based in Western Australia and Simon in Nelson, cut a swathe through the men’s draw, not
dropping a set over the two days. In the final they defeated Gareth Robb and Tom Batt 6-2, 6-1, their big serves and crisp volleys proving too good for the Christchurchbased combination. The height and extra reach of the lofty Phillips twins was also a decisive factor, making them a tough proposition to pass at the net or lob. In the semifinals Robb and Batt downed local hopefuls Lee Harborne and Andrew Forgesson 6-1, 6-1, while the Phillips got the better of Hamish Morrow and Dave Sandford 6-3, 7-6 in a tighter contest. The 16-year-old Otway twins also cemented victory without dropping a set. They
met Eveline van der Linden and Renny Spruijtenburg in the final and prevailed 6-2, 6-2. The Phillips twins grew up in Christchurch, where they played top-level tennis until in their mid-twenties, before Sam headed to Australia nine years ago and Simon set up home in Nelson, where he is the province’s No 1. They warmed up for Rapaura with an over-35 tournament in Perth in September, losing in the doubles final to Australia’s top over-35 combination. “We used to play together all the time years ago,” said Sam, “but now we are lucky if we play together once or twice a year.” Simon, who is a doctor, was
a beaten Rapaura finalist two years ago, losing to Gareth Robb on that occasion, so suggested getting revenge was one reason for entering the tournament, although the logistics of getting the brothers together in time were tight. “It was based on when Sam could get over [from Perth]. As it turned out he flew over on Saturday and drove up … it was really nice of [the organisers] to let us play late afternoon back-to-back so we could take part.” They relished the opportunity. “It was great fun,” said Sam, “there’s a really nice atmosphere, it’s well-organised and the competition is really good.”

speedway Wayne Martin The Midget class has been light on the ground here in Nelson over the last few seasons but this weekend all of that is about to change. The Milestone Homes Top of the South speedway is hosting
the New Zealand Midget Grand Prix kindly supported by the team at Southern Streetcars in Brightwater. Around twentyfour top class cars and drivers have entered this blue-ribbon event and in fact its not a common occurrence to see a field of this size in the South Island at
all as midget racing is predominantly raced on the North Island tracks such as Western Springs which is known as the spiritual home of Midget car racing both here and overseas. A few seasons back we proudly hosted the New Zealand Midget championship and it is still rated as one of
the best meetings to ever have been held here as the Nelson track is well suited for this class so the racing this weekend should once again be top shelf with a lot of passing opportunities. We have entries from Auckland, Palmerston North, Stratford, Christchurch, Dunedin

Don’t miss the kids (8 – 15 yr olds) in the Quarter Midgets who will be making their first appearance of the season here in Nelson in a round of their South Island series.
Bonus point victories to Car Company Stoke Nayland, ACOB and Nelson College maintained the intrigue in the TPL club cricket competition on Saturday. With just one more match each to play, these three plus the Dolphins all have a chance of
making the three team playoffs in February. The wheels are wobbling on the Dolphins campaign and without big run-scorer Prabodha Arthavidu they seem especially vulnerable. Stoke Nayland and ACOB seem assured of playoff berths while Nelson College, under master coach Garry MacDonald,
appear to be coming home with a wet sail. The outstanding individual performance of the day was produced by belligerent ACOB opener Thomas Zohrab who backed up a fine 117 with a parsimonious and dangerous bowling display of 4/13 off ten overs. Full results in the Nelson App.

‘Bigsy’ signs off from Suburbs Locally Owned and Operated
Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
The most successful coach in Nelson Suburb’s history is handing over the reins. Steve ‘Bigsy’ Bignall has been synonymous with Suburbs football in recent years but has opted not to return to the helm in 2020. He says, with some quality young coaches in the ranks, the time was right to “get out of the way”. Steve will go down as the best coach in the club’s 50-plus year existence having guided the side to back-to-back MPL titles in 2004-05. He then went on to coach Ferrymead Bays, Richmond and Nelson FC before returning to his ‘first love’ in 2016. Steve’s return saw Suburbs go on an historic Chatham Cup run in 2018 and claim an inaugural Southern League title in 2019. He says he had the privilege of coaching some fantastic players, including All Whites Jeremy Brockie and Campbell Banks as

claimed the elite women’s division. Kiwis also claimed the men’s elite division in a hard-fought final against Japanese pair Shoji Kurasaka and Kensuke Shoji. The New Zealand side of Mike Watson and Johan Timmer put on a masterclass in the third set to take the Nelson grand slam by 15-8.

Tasman United has made a winning start to the year with a 2-0 victory over Eastern Suburbs at Saxton Field on Sunday. The win sees Tasman jump from tenth all the way up to fifth on the National Premier League table after nine rounds. It was a new look Tasman outfit which took the pitch with Jama Boss and Facu Barbero departing Nelson during the break. Blustery conditions greeted the sides with Tasman playing into a stiff wind in the first half. It was scrappy early on, with Corey Vickers involved in a scuffle and three yellow cards being shown inside the opening 20 minutes. Jean Philippe Saiko finally created the first opportunity for Tasman after 20 minutes but was just wide of the mark. An awful mistake by keeper Nick Stanton almost gifted Eastern the opener but the visitors went just wide of the open net after Nick’s clearance found the Eastern attack. After limited chances for both teams the half ended with Eastern peppering the hosts’ goal, but Tasman held firm to send the sides into the sheds locked at 0-all. Jean Philippe finally broke the

shackles right after the resumption, finishing off a beautiful move created by Vickers. Tasman looked to settle on their lead while Jesse Randall was causing all sorts of problems for Eastern on the wing as the match entered extra time. Randall then laid one on for Lachie Brooks to score his first National League goal for Tasman and seal its third win of the season. Next weekend sees Tasman hosting Southern United in a first season appearance in Blenheim. Scorers: Tasman 2 (Saiko, Brooks) Eastern 0

s w e N g n i h s Fi Dominik Berghamer The water in the bay is about 21 degrees at the moment which means that the snapper should be spawning instead of feeding. Interestingly, quite a few of them don’t seem to have gotten the memo. The catch rates slowed down a bit the week before Christmas but the fish never stopped biting and good hauls are still possible. The shallows hold lots of smaller (but still legal sized) fish, most of the larger ones are being caught between 12 and 30 metres. The snapper seem to concentrate on the western side of the Bay, most reports come from the Motueka and Kaiteriteri area. Very big specimen are amongst them, dozens of trophy fish close to or even over 20lbs have been caught over the last two weeks. Gurnard are a very common bycatch when fishing for snapper at the moment, they are very tasty and are great fun to catch,
especially when the rest of the fishing is slow. Kingfish are still around in good numbers and sizes, many of them taken around the spat farms. If they are not on the bite (and the visibility is good), jump in with a spear gun to improve your success rates! There have been reports of Albacore tuna being caught north of farewell spit which raises hope that they will arrive in the Bay soon. The odd pelagic seems to be here already, several blue sharks have been caught recently. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club committee members are busy organising the 2020 Big Blue Snapper Cup on March 7th, which will be bigger than ever. Over $10.000 worth of prizes have already been lined up with more to come yet. Save the date in your calendar! Find more info onwww.dawnbreakers.co.nzor on facebook. Tight lines!
The greatest players on the planet were in Nelson for the Golf Croquet World Team Championship last week and it was the hosts taking home the crown. Josh Freeth, Duncan Dixon, Felix Webby and Edmund Fordyce claimed the Openshaw Shield, defeating Egypt in a two-day long final at the Hinemoa Club. Australia, Egypt, England, Ireland, South Africa, Sweden, USA and New Zealand battled it out over seven days of competition. The Kiwis made a winning start to their campaign with wins over England and Australia as well as a 12-0 demolition of Ireland. New Zealand then met a formidable United States side in the semi-final, scraping home in a dramatic contest before defeating Egypt 20 games to 10. Club president Ben Wilkie says they were privileged to host the world’s best. “As usual, these tournaments require a lot of planning and hard work by willing club members. We had the co-operation of Nelmac in the preparation of the lawns which were ready right on cue.” Ben says there were very favourable comments by all the international teams of the venue, the lawns and particularly the catering.
