Tim Bayston knows he has burned some bridges in his time, but he also reckons he deserves a break. When he turned up at the Tahunanui Community Hub in late November, he was in severe pain and had not eaten in four days. “He was a train wreck,” says the hub manager Mark French. “He was really bad.” Tim had found himself in a difficult position. He was living in a van, parked up in

Tahunanui. He was paying it off $150 a week but, after he bought it, someone vandalised it. They broke the windscreen, cut the tyres and snapped off the wipers. “I’m mechanically minded so I can fix some of that, but not the tyres or windscreen,” says Tim. Tim has severe medical issues, partially from a lifetime as a panel beater and sprayer in the days where protective masks were

The owner of the car workshop that was gutted by a huge blaze over the weekend is praising the work of the fire service in making sure it did not destroy his entire business.

The fire broke out 10.10pm on Saturday night at a workshop behind MS Ford, which is next door to the BP petrol station and a host of LPG tanks. The blaze drew firefighters from across the region in 12 appliances. It caused the closure

of the State Highway for several hours as onlookers watched them douse the fire, which also threw out toxic smoke. The fire was extinguished at about 3am, however, Haven Rd remained closed for some time with diversions in place.

There were no reports of injuries or any people in the building. “Not often do we get a fire with all the different aspects that this one had,” says senior station officer Craig Davies. Not only did firefighters have to contend with the threat of the

Down and out in Nelson FROM PAGE 1 not used. As a result, he has severe breathing difficulties, chronic pain, as well as mental health issues. He is also on the methadone programme. He describes himself as “stubborn” and “pig headed” but means well. While he has been in and out of jail over his 56 years, he says those days are long behind him. Tim is hoping Work and Income might help pay for the repairs so he can at least move the van. However, in the six weeks since his van has been immobile, Nelson City Council has fined him several times for illegal camping. He says council have also threatened to impound the van. “They said I’ve got to try and help

myself. But what do you think I’ve been doing?” Plenty of businesses and people around Tahunanui have been assisting Tim, including the chemist and doctors, who waived his fees and prescription costs when he was extremely unhealthy. In the past two months he also has put on 10kg, thanks to the community centre and the good will of others around Tahunanui. But Mark is worried that if the council keep hitting him with fines it will undo all the good work he has been doing in getting back his health. “He is going to be back where he started. It seems a bit of a shame if he ends up where he came from. There needs to be a bit more awareness around people who are trying to help themselves.” Tim is on the waiting list for

emergency housing but there is no timeline on when a place might become available. “Everything is magnified when you haven’t got a home. You have not just got your health to worry about, got car, food to worry about. There are heaps of things.” His van did have a DVD player in it that would help take his mind off his troubles. Memories of his son’s suicide six years ago, during the Christmas period, loom large. But Tim hasn’t got the petrol to charge the battery. “When you are lying there, and you have nothing to keep you occupied it can be pretty dark.” In the meantime, Tim says he just needs some time to get his van going. “It means I can move on, but I’ll still be no better off housing wise.

I just need a bit of a break.” Council group manager environmental management Clare Barton says they were informed about “a man living in a damaged van on Beach Road after receiving numerous complaints earlier this month”. He was informed he is in breach of the freedom camping bylaw as the vehicle he is staying in is not self-contained. Council then contacted the Ministry of Social Development to try and find safe, alternative accommodation for him. “Council takes homelessness as an issue very seriously. Services such as Tahunanui Community Hub, Kai Rescue and the Male Room are supported by Council funds, and do a wonderful job of providing support to those in need.”

He was on site watching the fire unfold on Saturday night. “It was all go then,” he says. “But the fire service was amazing. We lost all the workshop bays but not the reception or the offices. When you saw the fire, you thought ‘wow, how did they do that?’” It is still not clear what started the fire and police and investigators have not said whether it was suspicious or not.

Firefighters from across the region battled the blaze. “I would be gutted to think it was suspicions.” Alan says the fire has brought out the best in the community with even other car dealerships offering them workshop space

so they can go about their business. “It’s been amazing.” Alan says it is likely the workshop will be demolished, and they will rebuild.

Nelson fisherman lands world blue cod record Jonty Dine

Concerns over vandalism at local parks Staff Reporter

A Nelson fisherman can now lay claim to having caught the world’s biggest blue cod ever weighed. Troy Dando landed the beast last October while fishing in Fiordland. The catch was officially weighed by the International Game Fishing Association and is now the current World Record Holder. The weather gods were smiling on Troy and his crew during the week-long trip. “We got to fish some areas hardly ever fished because of the weather normally in that part of New Zealand.” Troy was using a lite Shimano rod and reel, set up with an Ocean Angler Jitterbug lure, when the fish struck. “There were some bigger ones following it to surface, they don’t put up much of a fight, the old blue cod.” He says it was over four days before he got the cod back

Photo: Supplied. home to get it weighed in and it had lost a lot of weight and size. “But it still came in a healthy 3.38kg (7lb 8oz) but would easily have gone over 8lb when first caught.” Coincidentally, Troy had actually looked up the world record prior to the trip. “It was pretty pathetic 1.72kg … I thought I could give it a

good crack.” While happy to be holding the record, he doesn’t believe it will last long. “It’s certainly not the biggest cod you’d get, there are a lot of bigger ones. Now I’ve highlighted it I get guys telling me they are catching them every other day, but for now, it’s mine.”

Despite his title, Troy doesn’t consider the accomplishment anything special. “It’s pretty ho hum, if it was a kingfish or a marlin it might be worth getting excited about.” The fish currently resides in Troy’s freezer. “I’ve been trying to find someone to get it mounted.”

A series of thefts and vandalism has resulted in the loss of new park furniture and damage to a historic Nelson statue. On the weekend of January 18, three macrocarpa bench seats donated by Nelson’s Youth Council were stolen from Sunday Hole, in the Maitai Valley. This followed a similar theft in December, when a new macrocarpa bench at the Tahuna Beach foreshore reserve was ground off at the base. Earlier in the month, the statue on top of the Priapos Fountain in Queens Gardens, which was undergoing restoration work at the time, was kicked at the base leaving a large crack. Sport and Recreation Committee chair, councillor Tim Skinner, says the incidents were extremely frustrating for council staff who had a duty to protect assets paid for with ratepayer money. “So many of the things that make Nelson a great place to live are funded through the money we pay as ratepayers.” He says everyone who goes for a walk in one of our public parks benefits from the work done to make them a welcoming and relaxing place to visit. “That’s why thefts and vandalism like this are detrimental to all Nelsonians.” Council has reported each of the incidences to police and asks that members of the public with any relevant information call the police non-emergency contact number on 105 to make a report.

Council calls on retailers to phase out plastics Staff Reporter Nelson Council has written to local supermarkets and other retailers, calling on them to get on board with upcoming changes to the way the city recycles its plastic waste. From 1 July, Nelson’s kerbside collection service will only collect plastic types 1,2 and 5. Plastics 3, 4 and 7 are shipped overseas and, as most global markets now refuse to accept the city’s waste, there is no way of knowing whether it is processed sustainably. The letter is signed by infrastructure committee chair councillor Brian McGurk, who calls on supermarkets and other local businesses to “take the initiative in phasing out the use

of plastic types 3, 4, 6 and 7”. “As Nelson was the first city council to declare a climate emergency we have a duty to act ethically and responsibly. We simply cannot, in good conscience, send these plastics overseas to potentially end up as someone else’s rubbish, where employment practices may differ significantly from New Zealand, as well as incurring a significant carbon cost along the way.” Annually, Nelsonians recycle around 1,500 tonnes of glass, 1,550 tonnes of fibre (paper and cardboard), 108 tonnes of steel, 72 tonnes each of plastics 1 and 2 and 90 tonnes (plastics 3 to 7). Typical packaging made from plastic types 1, 2 and 5 includes soft drink and milk bottles, plastic fruit trays, ice

cream containers and shampoo bottles. Plastic types 3, 4 and 7 include items like make up containers, garden hose, cling wrap, car parts and computers. Council has not collected soft type 6 plastic for some time. Type 6 includes polystyrene cups and takeaway clamshells, cheap toys, foam meat trays and plastic cutlery. “We’re encouraging people to seriously think about the packaging of the products they buy and consider avoiding these plastic types where possible,” says Brian. Over the next six months, he says council will be explaining what this will mean for Nelson, so everyone is ready for change on 1 July 2020.

There was drama on the streets of central Nelson last week when police were called to an alleged stabbing in Anzac Park. The incident, which left a man with blood-soaked back, occurred around 4pm last Wednesday, and is believed to have been an altercation between two rough sleepers. Two ambulances attended as well as police. A person was been taken into custody in relation to the attack. Photo: Jonty Dine.

A town house development on Nayland Rd claimed a national title at the House of the Year competition. Photo: Supplied. This Richmond home took out the national category award for new home $600-$750k.

Quality builds recognised nationally Sara Hollyman Homes in Nelson and Tasman have been named best in the country at the 2019 Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition. A development of eight highend, architecturally-designed, two and three-bedroom units on Nayland Rd and a new-build in Kakano Lane, Richmond, have each taken out national category awards. More than 330 properties from across New Zealand

were entered into the regional rounds of the competition and InHaus Developments Ltd director Russell Campbell says winning the New Home $600-750k category for their Kakano Lane build is great recognition for the staff, builders and sub traders. “This is our sixth award, so it shows we have been maintaining that building standard.” Judges said the home was “exceptionally designed” and great design features made the home “a cut above the ordinary”.

“The builder should be congratulated for an incredible quality of workmanship that has been achieved in all aspects of the build,” the judges said. Russell says it’s a credit to his young team. “I’ve got four great young builders who are achieving higher levels year in and year out. It’s a pretty good effort for a little Nelson business,” Russell says. A town house development on Nayland Rd, built by Scott Construction, also claimed the

title of Master Build 10-Year Guarantee Multi Apartments/ Duplexes/Terraces National award winner. Judges said the “standout project” showed good planning on a site that had been used to its maximum potential. “Each townhouse has been created with a sensible choice of contrasting materials requiring minimal ongoing maintenance.” They say the well-constructed and presented creation had made this a standout project.

Local filmmaker turns his lens to retirees Matt McCrorie Keith Hawke will be the first to tell you that he’s not retired. He has had a long, storied career in filmmaking and is currently working hard on his next project, a documentary called ‘Retired: Now what?’ The project is a series of conversations with retired people in the region who want to use their skills beyond retirement. While Keith has been been in the area for nearly 15 years, his career has taken him all over the world, spending 12 years making corporate videos and documentaries in Hong Kong and Singapore, where he ran his own filmmaking company. ‘Those left behind’ was his last project, a series of conversations with people in rural areas whose lives have been affected by depression and suicide. After working on a few projects for Nelson Marlborough Health, Keith got talking to people who are retired, semiretired, or want to retire. “A lot of what I was hearing was that a lot of retired people want to do something with the skills they’ve developed, often over

Often, Keith says, it’s not about the money. “A lot of these people have been working for years. It’s not about the money, but they

want to give something back to the community, they still have really valuable skills.” Keith says that when people retire, they can often find themselves cut off from the community. “Suddenly you lose that community of friends and colleagues that you meet through work.” There seems to be a gap between employers who could use these people and job seekers, Keith says. One example, Keith says, is a recently retired farmer. “This guy sold his farm to retire, but now he’s sitting around scratching his head. He built his own business from the ground up, starting from scratch, and he’s got a range of skills that could be useful to a range of employers.” Keith hopes the project will be a way to bridge the gap between retired or semi-retired locals who have a lot to give, and employers who may not have considered hiring someone towards the end of their career. If you have a similar experience that you want to share with Keith, contact him on hawkefilms88@icloud.com

Have your say on local dog control laws Staff Reporter

Dog owners can now have their say on the proposed changes to Council’s Dog Control Policy and Bylaw. Nelson City Council wants to hear the thoughts, ideas and suggestions of both dog owners and non-dog owners not only about the proposed changes, but any relevant aspect of the policy and bylaw. Council says the policy and bylaw aim to strike a balance between

the wishes of dog owners, the welfare needs of dogs, and the wider public. It also considers such things as which public places dogs should be allowed to run free or be on a leash in and areas where dogs are not allowed. The proposed changes include; requiring dogs to be kept on-leash in council’s grazed reserves, except the grazed area of Paremata Flats Reserve, where dogs can be off-leash but under control. Dogs would be allowed off-leash

in Monaco Reserve, excluding the playground area. The Paremata Flats planted area and the Delaware Estuary margins would be off-limits to dogs, and Whakatū Drive Foreshore Reserve and Titoki Reserve would require them onleash. The Boulder Bank would also become an on-leash area, in addition to dogs continuing to be prohibited from the Cut towards Boulder Bank Drive for 4 kilometres, from October to

February each year. Group manager environmental management, Clare Barton, says with about 6000 registered dogs in the city, it was important the policy and bylaw accommodated the needs of both dogs and their owners, and the wider community. “Dogs, often considered to be part of the family, play a valuable role in our society. “But access to public places, where there may be a conflict between dogs and the

community, stock, wildlife or the native environment, needs to be proactively managed so everyone can enjoy our public spaces.” The consultation period runs through to 4pm, 28 February 2020. Submitters will also be able to speak at a hearing on 24 March 2020. The easiest way to provide feedback is to make your comments online at nelson.govt. nz/consultations. Submissions can also be dropped off at Civic House.

Victory Boxing to host charity dinner Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Almost four years on from its last major fundraiser, Victory Boxing will host a ‘a night with the stars’ as the charity continues to grow in the community. The popular ‘Fight for Victory’ corporate boxing event saw more than 2000 people pack the Trafalgar Centre in 2016 and director Paul Hampton says it’s time for another fundraiser. “We are getting busier and busier and so what we looked at doing was a fundraising dinner.” Paul has secured the speaking services of young sports stars, weightlifter Megan Gifford and local rugby star Anton Segner, as well as former New Zealand heavyweight boxing champion Shane Cameron and comedian William Waiirua. “They are great friends of the gym and are all very entertaining.” Paul says William was a natural

choice as he does a lot of work in the community helping people feel better, while former Nelson College 1st XV captain Anton is a “great kid and he has a cool story”. Paul says it’s great to have two upand-comers and two men who have “been there and done that”. “We will know roughly about that time whether or not Megan will qualify for the 2020 Olympics and she also has a great story and we, of course, have a lot of time for Shane.” Comedian Raybon Kan will MC the evening at the Rutherford Hotel on March 6. The strong support for Victory Boxing is still evident, with all 35 tables for the dinner sold with an after party set for Harry’s Hawker House. Paul says these types of fundraisers help keep Victory Boxing operational and costs down for members. “We’d be devastated to hear someone couldn’t come [to the gym] because of money.”

Water restrictions widen Staff Reporter

With summer in full swing and temperatures beginning to swelter, the region is bracing for an extended dry period. Water restrictions came into effect for the first time this season, in Tasman last Monday. Tasman District Council has imposed Stage One water restrictions to the Waimea Plains and Phase A water restrictions to the Richmond water supply scheme. These restrictions are also in place in those areas of Nelson City that are supplied with water from the Tasman District Council. Urban households on the Richmond reticulated supply should be looking to conserve water where they can.

These restrictions apply to all residential properties adjacent to Champion Rd and means residents cannot water the lawn or fill a pool, spa or water feature, but you can top one up if needed. The Nelson City Council has a little more capacity before restrictions will be needed for the wider city, but at the current rate of water use and without any significant rainfall, water restrictions could be introduced in Nelson within the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, council asks residents to conserve water as much as possible. For further information on the restrictions and what they mean for households, go to w w w.tasman.govt.nz/link/ water-restrictions

Tips for saving water: • Check leaky taps. • Keep bath levels to a minimum and showers short. • Wait until you have a full load before using your dishwasher/washing machine. • Don’t use the toilet as a waste bin. • Cover your swimming pool to stop the water evaporating. • Use a bucket and brush when you wash the car and the house windows. • Water the garden only on calm days. • Save ‘grey water’ for garden use

In a bid to curb the number of discarded cats and kittens the Nelson SPCA is running a subsidised de-sexing and microchip campaign. A que from the counter to the carpark of customers waiting to book greeted SPCA staff the morning after they announced the campaign.

Nelson SPCA’s Donna Walzl says the idea is to help people who are struggling with de sexing their pets to encourage them to do it. Donna stresses there are a few conditions to be eligible for the subsidy. “Please ring up and see what they are, unfortunately not available to everyone. We are asking for a community services card but if there are people out there with a genuine need please do approach us and we’ll see what we can do.”

Alli Jackson Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could turn the clock back and just go back to goods being wrapped in paper and all liquids in glass and organic, that other word for naturally-grown food, not being so expensive but actually cheaper than plastic. Produce does not need to be wrapped in anything other than the skin it comes in. Watching people put corn in bags only to see them poke through then remove bag for another one grinds my gears. That is a zero-use plastic bag! I've successfully purchased produce and got it home without plastic for years now, it’s achievable. Jodie Lee Rental squeeze puts pressure on families: Nelson is an expensive place to live in anyway. I was brought up in Nelson and my oldest son and my youngest twins were born in Nelson. I ended up moving back to Christchurch as it was so much cheaper for a young family. Nelson is more for retirees now. Theresa Purnell It's ridiculous out there. Half a million dollars and more for houses that need a new roof or are in a flood zone. People are making huge profits

after owning a home for a short time and the wages aren't keeping up. Move? Even people in Invercargill are struggling. New Zealand is on the precipice and the greedy will have lined their pockets and moved on. Sarah Thomas A BIG part of why I left Nelson a year ago and have zero desire to return. Asil Relwof Doesn't take a genius to know how bad it is out there. I have major anxiety about ever having to move out of our rental and not having a home for me and my kids. I'm living in my third house since I moved to Nelson 4.5 years ago. Had to leave first house 90 days’ notice didn't give me a reason and they upped the rent by $50, and then 2nd house they put the house on the market after a year of living there! I spoke to my current landlord and he said he is happy for me to have 1-2 year lease at a time to put my mind at ease so I am

Nelson Matters The political year has got off to a bad start for the Government with revelations that unemployment is on the rise. The number of people on the dole was 124,000 in December 2017 and had dropped every year since 2010 under National’s careful economic management. It went up 10,000 in Labour’s first year to 134,000 in December 2018. It has gone up another 13,000 to 147,000 in December 2019. That is an increase of 19% or 23,000 in just two years. Rising unemployment is bad for everyone. There is nothing worse for people as not being able to get work. Children do worse

when neither Dad nor Mum are working. It is bad for tax payers who, under Labour, are having to fund dole payments for another 23,000 people. The sharp increase in unemployment benefit numbers is the product of Labour’s poor economic policies. Business confidence has plummeted. Labour has been particularly tough on small business in imposing lots of extra costs and regulations, yet it is these that provide so many jobs in areas like Nelson. It is no surprise that fewer employers are able to take on new staff. Other businesses are reducing staff to survive. The total

number of jobs in New Zealand grew by 120,000 in 2016 and 2017 under National. This has dropped under Labour by two thirds to 40,000 in 2018 and 2019. This less than the number of school leavers and why youth unemployment is up 7,000. Labour has also gone soft on requiring those on the dole to look for work or get into training. National had the Ministry of Social Development meeting regularly with those on the dole. The number of interviews has halved and are no longer compulsory. Labour has also weakened the sanctions for people who make no attempt to get work or at-

The frustration is real. We are a couple with older kids no longer living with us. We rent a 3bdrm house with large lounge and sunroom, yet our landlord won't let us take in boarders or flatmates!! It would help us save more to buy a home, and it would help another couple/small family/young people through affordable rent to save if they choose to...and we are willing. We are exemplary tenants and very house proud so caring for the property is certainly no issue. I just can't understand it. Allanya Misiepo

tend interviews. I have cases in Nelson where gang members are on the dole, actively dealing in drugs and who have no intention of getting work. These people should not be getting weekly dole payments funded by hard working law abiding New Zealanders. Unemployment is often because people do not have the skills businesses need. I am concerned that nationalising NMIT will make it less connected to the skill needs of Nelson businesses. I also worry about the high proportion of people unable to get work because of problems with drugs like meth and cannabis. I have been working to get more

drug rehab programmes in Nelson so we can help these people get clean and get jobs. The Government is only going to make unemployment worse by making drugs easier to access. Nelson’s unemployment benefit numbers are now 4.4% of the working age population. That is one in every 23 people. It is now the highest in the South Island and higher than Auckland. It is not a crisis like when I was first elected an MP in 1990. Labour then let unemployment get to over 10%. My worry is that it is on the increase. We need to do better. Advert.

Stay safe around downed power lines It doesn’t happen very often, but sometimes power lines can end up on the ground. If a car crashes into a pole, or if a tree falls onto power lines, the lines can break and fall down. By knowing what to do in emergencies such as this, you can keep yourself and others safe.

If you come across power lines that have fallen to the ground you should: z

Stay well away from them and warn others to stay away too because the ground around the downed lines might be electrified

z

Call our fault line on 0800 508 100 to tell us where the downed lines are located

We will get someone there as quickly as possible to make the lines safe and repair them. The only people who should ever come near downed power lines are our experienced and trained line mechanics. They know the danger and they will only approach downed lines if they are sure it’s safe to do so.

What do you do if a power line comes down on a car you’re in? If you are in a car and the lines come down on top of your car you should: z

Stay in the car

z

Tell anyone who comes near to keep away too because the ground around the car might be electrified by the lines

z

Stay in the car until one of our line mechanics tells you it’s safe to get out

There are certain circumstances when staying in the car might not be safe e.g. if a fire starts in the car. If it is not safe to stay in the car and you have to get out you should: z

Jump from the open door of the car so that you are not touching the car and the ground at the same time (touching the ground and the car at the same time could give you a potentially fatal electric shock)

z

Stay on your feet and either shuffle or hop away from the car, keeping your feet close together until you are at least 10 metres or more away from the car. This might look a bit strange when you are doing it, but it could save your life because electricity can flow up one leg and down the other if you take a normal-sized step on electrified ground.

Lounging legacy for dedicated doctor Charles Anderson Editor

charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz

When Brian Neill first started working at Nelson Hospital in 1962 there were no dedicated maternity doctors. He became the region’s first specialist obstetricians – a role he held until he retired in 1994. But Brian was also a dedicated Rotarian and when he passed away last year at the age of 90, the Rotary Club of Nelson were wondering how to do something to honour his legacy. There were two chairs that

were dedicated to former local rotary presidents – one along the Maitai and another up the Grampians. But rotary member Kevin Hill, who trained under Brian, wondered if there was something closer to Brian’s heart that might be appropriate. “We had this idea that we could get something for partners to sleep at night through the grueling hours of labour.” So, they approached Harvey Norman who gave the club a discount on a La-ZBoy reclining chair. “It seemed like the right sort of thing to do,” Kevin says.

“Hopefully it gets the use it deserves.” The chair was presented to the Nelson Hospital’s maternity ward on Monday, complete with a memorial plaque. “Funding is always stretched,” says the hospital’s general manager of clinical services Lexi O’Shea. “We have good equipment and reasonable facilities but it’s the value-added things we can’t afford, so we really appreciate it.” The chair will now sit in the maternity ward for partners to rest in or even women who are in early labour to try and relax before their new arrival.

Local water blasters help clean up cemeteries Susan Johnson It was a simple post on Facebook, seen as far away as Australia, that lead to the cleanup of the Wakapuaka Cemetery going ahead a lot faster. Local man Brian McIntyre started restoring the headstones in Wakapuaka Cemetery around four years ago. Now joined by 12 other volunteers, the group are working their way around 16,000 gravesites using wire brushes, sandpaper and even once a denture brush. Realising that a water blaster would be much quicker way to get things done, Brian put a post on Facebook at Christmas asking if anyone had an “unemployed water blaster over the holidays that he could use”. Within days the message reached Jeff Neilson, who owns his own water blasting company. “My sister in Australia saw the

the site, they realised getting water was going to be a problem. Luckily, another helpful local offered the use of his outdoor tap, and they were good to go. The team quickly realised that this was a short-term solution due to the size of the cemetery, and Grant and Jeff agreed that the Brian and his team would benefit from

having their own water blaster. Together, Grant and Jeff gifted them a brand new one. Since then Brian has completed about 19 hours of work and it has been a huge help. “The brass plaques look magnificent, and the moss, dirt and lichen come off so easily,” he says. “It’s made a huge difference.”

Lucy Ingham, who has just finished studying law, was only one week out of university when she joined Nelson law firm Rout, Milner and Fitchett, where she is now working as a Law Clerk having previously summer clerked with the firm in 2019. In June this year, after completing her professional course, Lucy will be admitted to the bar. “In my current role I cover quite a broad area,” says Lucy. “Right now, I’m doing a lot of conveyancing work, with a focus on property and commercial. We are a general practise firm; everyone has their different areas and I’m enjoying the wide variety of work.” Friendly, approachable and originally from Nelson, Lucy already knows quite a few people in the area and enjoys meeting new clients. “When I was at school, I played a lot of sport, mainly netball, volleyball and basketball, which I hope to get back into this year. I also love the outdoors and spending time up at Lake Rotoiti at my family’s bach.” Rout, Milner and Fitchett is a friendly, professional law firm with a solid client base, which can help you with buying or selling property, subdividing, dealing with estate matters, etc. To make an appointment with Lucy, phone 548 0064 or email lucy.ingham@rmf-law.co.nz

A natural enthusiast, entertainer and teacher, Angelika’s mission is to help people improve the way they express themselves, in business & life. “I am holding upcoming workshops which are all about instilling confidence in self-employed people to present their services and products in an appealing way and being clear and concise about what they are doing.” Angelika says people who attend her workshops get to practise and express these words to give them impetus. Aptly called ‘Finding Your Sales Voice,’ the workshops are an opportunity to learn how to promote yourself, boost your confidence and receive instant coaching and feedback.

Personal trainer, Nicole Shand, who has been working at Sport Tasman for 10 years, does a huge variety of work in her role as a programmer advisor. “I love the fact that I can help people such as Mums with newborns and the elderly who aren’t able to exercise or perhaps don’t know how to exercise properly,” says Nicole. “I run all of our programmes, which are based at Saxon Stadium. There are programmes for the elderly, pregnant and post-natal women and so on.” Nicole says they cater for all different levels, depending on what people need. “We have a small community gym, with three personal trainers available. There’s also small groups for Mums who maybe aren’t sure about what they’re wanting to do or are allowed to do after they’ve had their baby.” Nicole says gyms can often be a bit ‘intimidating’ for people who haven’t been exercising or after they’ve had a baby and when they don’t feel confident going into a gym. For more information, call Nicole on 021 169 2014 or phone reception at Saxton Stadium on (03) 538 0072.

Crusaders returning to Nelson Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The Super Rugby champions will kick off their title defence at Trafalgar Park this Saturday in what will be the franchise’s first visit to the city since 2015. The Crusaders, will take on the New South Wales Waratahs in the season opener as they chase a record fourth consecutive championship. It’s been five long years since Nelson hosted the Crusaders when they beat the Hurricanes 38-15 with a side featuring All Black greats Richie McCaw and Dan Carter. The match will be a homecoming for a number of Nelson based players, including Leicester Fainga’anuku, Quinten Strange, David Havili and Ethan Blackadder. Crusaders CEO Colin Mansbridge says the club enjoys plenty of great support from the top of the South Island and, with a number of Crusaders players coming from the Tasman region, it’s a fantastic opportunity to take a Super Rugby game to one of its provincial unions.

“The fixture also falls on Nelson Anniversary weekend, providing local rugby fans with an opportunity to enjoy some great footy over their long weekend.” Tasman Rugby CEO Tony Lewis says the Tasman region loves it when our franchise comes to town. “We are excited about the match and especially the large number of Mako players in the Crusaders team. The weekend will be a great festival occasion similar to the 2018 test match.” Though there may not be the star factor that was on display in 2015, the Crusaders boast a typically powerful squad with a host of current All Blacks. World Cup breakout stars George Bridge and Sevu Reece will be sure to light up the sidelines with their blistering pace while Richie Mou’unga will bring his bag of tricks as he steers the ship for the Crusaders. With the retirement of Kieran Read and departures of Owen Franks, Sam Whitelock, Matt Todd and Jordan Taufua, the pack will have a new look to it, but still retains

The Crusaders and Waratahs have also partnered for the game in Nelson to raise funds to support Rural Aid in Australia – helping relief efforts due to the current

bushfires. For every try scored on Saturday night by a Crusaders player, the Crusaders will donate $1000 to Rural Aid. The Waratahs will match this for tries scored by their team. The match will kick off at the

Tasman United turns fortunes around

SportS

Reporter

st february saturday 1

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Tasman United has dragged themselves from the bottom of the national premiership table to declare themselves playoff contenders in a dramatic turnaround to kick off the new year. The franchise has enjoyed a reversal of fortune which has seen them go on a two-match winning streak, propelling themselves into the top four before slipping back to sixth after the weekend. The resurgence began with a hard-fought win over Eastern Suburbs before making an emphatic 5-0 statement against Southern two weeks ago. Tasman then suffered a close 3-2 loss to Waitakere on Saturday but are still well in the hunt. Coach Jess Ibrom says the recent run of form can be attributed to all the hard work that’s gone in, on and off the field. As well as a change in results, Tasman also welcomed some new faces into its ranks in the form of American Ben Watson and Aussie Josh Sancusie. Their arrivals came following the departures of Jama Boss,

pretty much already locked in the title. The side enjoyed a dominant 127 runwin over Nelson College at home to all but claim the crown. Elsewhere, Waimea Toi Toi United were too strong for Athletic College Old Boys, and Wakatu were also too strong from Motueka/Wanderers, claiming a sixwicket victory.

Club cricket: All three matches in the NCA 110 over club cricket competition on Saturday resulted in comfortable victories. With just one match left to play on February 15, Car Company Stoke Nayland, barring a miracle, have

Jess says these players left the region for a variety of reasons, including work and family. “It’s been a bit of a shift in terms of players vacated and we have had a couple come in, but most importantly we have found our goal scoring ability.” He says, prior to Christmas they had an issue in converting the many opportunities they created. “It’s really pleasing to see, there is a greater belief, and the confidence is high.” However, Jess says the boys are a humble, hard-working group not taking any games lightly.

Young sports stars to watch in 2020 After a stellar season of sport in 2019 for Nelson, reporter Jonty Dine highlights some of the young stars to keep an eye out for in 2020.

Anton Segner, Rugby.

Billy Check, Football.

Holly Chandler, Netball.

The German flanker will enter his first professional season following a hugely successful Nelson College career. Anton spent two years in the New Zealand schools’ side and led Nelson to a UC Championship in 2019 where he was named player of the tournament. Anton was signed by the Mako as a sixth former and will don the famous Nelson RFC colours as he looks to crack the Mitre 10 Champion squad. “This year I’m very much looking forward to playing senior rugby and my goal is to get involved in the Mako environment as much as possible once the time comes around.”

The Suburbs attacking midfielder made his MPL debut last season at just 15-years-old. Billy was a wider squad member of the New Zealand U17 side and recently moved to Wellington to link up with the Wellington Phoenix reserves. “For me making a sacrifice like moving away from home is pointless if I don’t make the most of this opportunity at the Phoenix.” He says he wants to be constantly improving his game and striving to be the best player he can be. “I want to be high performing in both the winter central league and the Handa Premiership in the summer.”

The defensive dynamo had another stellar season for Prices despite battling illness and injury. Holly was instrumental in guiding Prices to a second consecutive Nelson championship in 2019, pulling off two trademark intercepts in the final moments to secure victory. Holly also made the BEKO Mainland side and was a star for the Nelson Pines Volleyball team. Though she starts a new career this year, she will no doubt be a prominent figure at Saxton Stadium this season. I’m going into my first year of teaching this year so, I’m hoping to pass on some of my knowledge and enjoyment to the students at Brightwater.”

Tysxun Aiolupotea, Basketball. The Nayland College star guard, who led his side to an unlikely spot at nationals in 2019, will hope to be a regular for the Nelson Giants this year. Tysxun’s potential was recognised with a spot at the Steven Adams High School Invitational Camp as well as selection in the NZ Maori team last season. He says he hopes to make an impact on the court throughout the season and get as much exposure as possible. “I’m looking forward to most is the Giants season, mainly trying to soak up as much as I can and try get more playing time on the court.”

Jarrod McKay, Cricket. The Nelson College cricketer has enjoyed a rapid ascent in both the indoor and outdoor formats. After making his international debut for the New Zealand U22 indoor side, Jarrod was also selected for the Central Stags at just 19, taking two wickets in his first-class debut against the Knights. He says he hopes to become a regular for Central Districts A and make the indoor U22 World Cup. “I want to try and get faster and more consistent, to try and take me to the next level.”

SportS Cricket: The Central Stags are in town today taking on the Otago Volts at Saxton Oval in a 50 over clash. The Stags are languishing at the bottom of the Ford Trophy table with just one win from six games, but can still play spoilers as the third-placed Volts chase a playoff berth. Admission to the match is free. The match gets underway at 11am. Swimming: Luke Kelly of Nelson defended his title at race two of the national Banana Boat Ocean Swim Series in

Wellington last weekend. Abbey Smale from Richmond and last year’s series champion, Brightwater’s Sierra Thomas, took the top two women’s spots, finishing seventh and ninth overall. A total of 460 swimmers completed the 3.3km course, with 1km, 500m and shorter options also on offer. The 21 Nelson/Tasman swimmers in the 3.3km course came away with a swag of 14 age group medals, winning seven gold, five silver and two bronze, with another three just missing out, taking fourth spot. Nelson swimmers will continue competing in the series through the summer, with five

races to come, including The Interislander Big Tahuna in Nelson on March 7. Hiking: Torpedo7 XClub will host a free guided hike through the Grampians Reserve this weekend. No hiking experience is necessary, and guides will be provided. The hike will take approximately three hours returning along a series of tracks including the Tawa Track, Kanuka and Grampians Walkway. s w e N g n i h s Fi The Boom and Bust of the Tasman Bay Snapper fishery Michael Stump If you have fished for snapper in Tasman Bay over the last 10 years you would have noticed some considerable changes during this period, regarding fish size and numbers. Let’s go back even further to get a feel on how the fishing has changed. If you keep your eyes open locally you will come across old black and white photos with guys in wooden dinghies fishing Awaroa inlet, off the Boulder Bank and Pepin Island, catching half a dozen 20lbd snapper. Those photos would have been taken in the 1930-50s and large snapper were plentiful throughout the whole Bay. In the 1940s Nelson became an important fishing port and trawlers started to work the area. Commercial Snapper catches increased dramatically and went from a few tons up to 2000 tons of in the mid 1960s. All this was before quota management and many trawlers had their nets that full that they couldn’t retrieve them. They were left with no choice but to cut the ropes and dump the lot. Despite the big catches the problem the fisherman had was that the snapper spawned during the summer months. They were on the surface and therefore impossible to catch with a trawl net. In the mid 1970 some

Paul Andrews - 0/0

of the local skippers had a great idea and instead of using a single trawler they took two boats with a large net between them and scooped snapper up in huge numbers. Surface pair trawling was born and commercial catches peaked at 3000 tons of snapper in 1975. If you are not familiar with the local quota system, in comparison, today’s TACC for snapper is 250t for commercial and the same again for recreational/ customary users. The pair trawling didn’t last long as even the most hardened commercial fisherman could see stocks crashing and they knew the boom would be short lived. In the 1980s the quota management was introduced and the commercial quota has been around the 200t mark ever since. From the the 1980s onwards snapper stocks in Tasman Bay were very modest and fishermen had to go a long way to fill their nets. This didn’t really change until about 2010 when stocks started to recover. Keep your eyes open for the next issue when we talk about the recent recovery of local snapper stocks and what the future holds. Remember that the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club will host the 2020 Big Blue Snapper Cup on the 7th of March with over $12k in prizes. Tight lines!
