Jonty Dine Just two days after Schan Crowther agreed to marry her partner, he was killed in a motorcycle accident. Caleb Neho Wikaria died in the early hours of November 3 from injuries sustained in the crash on St Vincent St in central Nelson. Stricken with grief, Schan says the loss of her fiancée has been compounded by her ongoing battles with police. She is still searching for answers about the day Caleb died, with conflicting reports between police and eye witnesses adding to her frustrations. The 26-year-old laid a formal complaint with the Independent Police Conduct Authority citing poor communication from the lead detective. Full story on page 3.

Local vets and the SPCA are calling on Nelson City Council to introduce a microchipping bylaw for cats, as they struggle to deal with the number of strays. Last year the Nelson SPCA centre saw nearly 300 stray cats and kittens through its doors, a number manager Donna Walzl would like to see reduced. “I’d love to see compulsory microchipping for cats. They sit in a cage for up to seven days waiting for their owners and it’s the nicest feeling being able to reunite them - especially if they are sick or injured,” she says. A microchip is a permanent method of identification which allows vets, animal shelters and councils to contact the owner of a cat. About the size as a grain of rice, it is injected under the skin with a unique identification code which can be read by an electronic scanner. The code is recorded alongside the owner’s contact details on a national database. Practice manager at Victory Vets, Brendan Hickman, says from a veterinarian’s point of view, stray cats can be a financial burden as well as an emotional one, and compulsory microchipping would make their job much easier. “We get numerous cats that come in injured or found dead and we can’t find their owner. With injured cats, we’re investing our own finances into helping them. We spend a lot of money on these cats.

“Often people go away on holiday or move to a new house and their cats wander, but we can’t hold onto their cat forever. It’s always ongoing.” Todd Field, president of the Nelson Marlborough branch of the New Zealand Veterinary Association agrees, says he raised the idea of mandatory microchipping with the council a few years ago. “They were not against it, but the issue was around how they would enforce it. It seems to be a bit of a grey area where no one wants to take on the responsibility.” Clare Barton, group manager environmental

what is happening nationally and whether a coordinated Nelson/ Tasman approach is needed.

The council currently provides a $5000 subsidy to the SPCA to help with the cost of cat control activities, including desexing programmes, rehoming, public education, and assisting the public with stray cats. “While there are no bylaws specific to cats in urban areas in Nelson, council encourages responsible ownership of all animals,” says Clare. Microchipping bylaws are already in place in other parts of New Zealand, including Wellington and Palmerston North. Marlborough District Council have also introduced a multiple cat licence, where if you want to keep more than four

cats, you need to pay a licence fee of $75. Todd says it costs between $30 - $50 to microchip a cat, but this could go down with a bylaw. Meanwhile, Donna says the SPCA still have around 100 spaces left for cats to be microchipped or desexed for a reduced cost of $25 in their Snip ‘n Chip campaign, which runs until 13 March in Nelson. “It’s going really well, but we still need more people to sign up. So far, we’ve had four days of 20 cats a day and there are still a few weeks to go. “If you don’t have a community services card and can’t afford it please get in touch with us and we’ll see what we can do.”

Grieving fiancée searching for answers Jonty Dine Reporter

Continued from page 1. It is understood that the lead detective has since been relegated to a different role on the case. Schan claims the detective had not been forthcoming with her with the accident report or with court appearances of the driver. Caleb was a member of the Killer Beez gang and Schan says her partner’s history has been the catalyst for her treatment by police. Schan also wonders why it took so long to establish Caleb had a brain injury. When first arriving at the hospital, Schan says Caleb was receiving treatment on his broken bones and internal injuries. “I was thinking it can’t be that bad because he would have gone straight to theatre or flown to Wellington, I thought he’s going to pull through this.” More than six hours after the crash, she says Caleb was taken for a CT scan. “Then they came and told us he’s got a brain injury and he’s not going to last 20 minutes, he didn’t even last long enough for us to get to his room and say goodbye.”

Dam cost blows out by $25 million Matt McCrorie

Nelson Weekly Locally Owned and Operated

Like us on

The cost of the Waimea Dam has seen a sharp increase, thanks to “unforeseen geological conditions” to the tune of an extra $25 million, bringing the total cost of the project up to $129.4 million. Waimea Water CEO Mike Scott says that rock designated for use as drainage material in the embankment has become a concern. “Some rock was found to be more fractured and breaking up more readily than expected.” The rock in question was originally meant to be used for the drainage zones of the embankment of the dam, but rock testing in January this year has shown this rock is not of a high enough quality to be used. Mike says that one of the possible solutions will be to import rock from nearby quarries, which will add an estimated $25 million to the project. “We’ve always been clear that geology was the big risk in this project.” Ratepayers across the Tasman District may bear the brunt of this additional cost. Under the agreed funding model, that council is committed to funding any cost increases over $3 million. “This does not automatically mean it’s funded entirely through rates,” says Tasman Mayor Tim King. He says the council is hoping that other funding partners will look at contributing to the cost increase, referring to partners like Waimea

Irrigators Limited, Nelson City Council, and the Government. The dam is the largest to be built in the country in 20 years and is said by its proponents to be essential to the region’s future. “We remain committed to this as the best solution to our water shortage needs,” says Tim. “It’s extremely disappointing to be facing these increased costs. It was always a possibility.” Tim says the funding need is not immediate, and that the funding that has already been allocated to the dam will last through 2020 and into 2021. Tim says that the cost increase will be part of a conversation about whether debt caps and rate caps need to increase, and whether other projects are pushed out or altered. The mayor admitted that if funding could not be found and the council had to fund the entire cost increase of the dam, it would work out to be a 1.9 per cent increase on total rates revenue. “If there is no other external funding available, ratepayers will be up for another $23.5 million,” says Tim. “We’ve relied on a lot of external advisors, there have been questions asked about every aspect of this project. The advice provided led the last council to proceed with the project. With hindsight, a greater budget would have been useful. Even with this extra money, it is still the most cost-effective solution.”

Railway Reserve NEWS diversion imminent Locally Owned and Operated

Cellphone driving disappoints: Police are extremely concerned by the number of motorists using cellphones while driving in Nelson. Police conducted a road safety operation last Tuesday and Wednesday where they were on Nelson city streets for a onehour period each day. Tasman road policing manager, senior sergeant Grant Andrews, says 50 drivers were issued infringement notices for using cellphones while driving, during the operation. “Drivers were found to be browsing social media and texting. It’s extremely disappointing they are not getting the message. Operations like these aren’t just about enforcement; they’re about trying to get people to understand that nothing on your phone is worth risking your life or someone else’s life. We would also like to thank the vast majority of drivers who were witnessed driving safely during this operation.”

In a few months’ time part of the Railway Reserve cycle path will be a lighted tunnel under a new road. But until then commuters will be diverted around the area. The project is due to the construction of the associated $125 million lifestyle retirement village. The work is happening near Station Reserve, 350m north of Beatson Rd, for a new road that will provide access to the Tasman Heights subdivision and Coastal Views Lifestyle Village. Developers of the retirement village, Questral Corporation, say they can start work on the retirement village as soon as the road is in – although they have already been able to commence work on the care centre. Nelson City Council’s

Photo: Charles Anderson. capital delivery team leader Rebecca Dawkins told the infrastructure committee last Thursday that work on the underpass was imminent. Cyclists were already being prepared to be moved around the site with Waimea Rd, lined out with water-filled barriers. These will become the main route for cyclists while the underpass is dug

out. Rebecca said that work will take three to four months. The underpass was costing the council $519,000. A condition of the consent, which was issued in February 2016, is that developers will pay for the traffic-lighted intersection to go on Waimea Rd, but the council would pay for the work necessary to keep the Railway Reserve

pedestrian-friendly. Council says various traffic reports have concluded the impacts of this road are “no more than minor.” The Coastal Views Lifestyle Village will include residential units to house up to 300 people, and will include 180 standalone units, 60 apartments and 50 care beds.

Reserves reopen: After consultation with Fire and Emergency New Zealand, Council is pleased to confirm all of Nelson’s parks and reserves are now fully open to the public. With further significant rainfall over the last few days, the Build Up Index (BUI) has dropped to the low 50s which means it is safe for everyone to access all our reserves once more. The forecast is for warm, dry weather during the next 10 days, which will see the BUI continue to rise again. However, provided there is further significant rain during the next month council is confident the reserves can remain open.

Back or neck pain – then try a teeter! Why Inversion? Because in most cases it works! Inversion Therapy is the oldest recorded medical cure for back issues, otherwise known as spinal traction. Inversion Therapy has many benefits. Not only will it relieve your neck or back pain, but it will improve posture and flexibility, and helps with spinal realignment, sciatica, osteoarthritis, discrelated issues and more. Inversion New Zealand has been teaching people to use this treatment for over 12 years now and most people get off the teeter pain free to the first time in years, or their pain is substantially reduced. Come to our expo this weekend “People can come along and try it,” says owner Dave Hare. “They can also watch other people getting treated and see their reactions as they get off a table. People often say things like, ‘gosh it feels so good to be pain free, I haven’t felt like this for years!’” Dave says he suffered from back pain for 20 years and paid thousands of dollars for different treatments to no avail, but then he tried the inversion table and was amazed by the results.

That’s the average result for all 15,000 people who have them in New Zealand.” “The benefits are huge,” says Dave. “They are being use for brain-damaged people, stroke victims and for people who simply want to sort their back and neck issues out. Most people see a large improvement after only one treatment.” Inversion NZ hosts back pain

expos throughout the country almost every weekend. These are a way for people to try out a Teeter Inversion Table and feel the benefits for themselves. It’s also a great refresher course for people who already own one. Sessions run continuously from 10am to 4pm and no bookings are required. A new Nelson City Council initiative was launched on Monday, designed to help Nelson thrive as its population ages. Twenty percent of people in Nelson are over 65, and by 2043 it is predicted that figure will rise to a third. Council’s group manager strategy and communications, Nicky McDonald, says this demographic swing will present Nelson with a range of challenges, but ‘City for All Ages’ aims to involve the whole city in finding positive solutions. “An ageing population will have an impact on housing, the economy, the labour market, transport,

and health care. Getting the city to prepare for those changes now, in a way that involves people of all ages, is the smart thing to do.” The initiative is being piloted by a community steering group chaired by Nelson businessman Paul Steere, and the launch included a presentation by the co-director for active ageing at AUT, professor Stephen Neville. Stephen says Nelson has a high internal migration of older people who come to the city to retire, but stresses there are ways to accommodate these demographic changes. “If Nelson can get this right, it can become a city for all people.” A survey and website have also been launched at www.cityforallages.nz

Stay safe around power lines when doing jobs at your place If you’re catching up on home maintenance but working around electricity there are a few things to watch out for. Any work around electricity lines can be dangerous. Here are some important tips to help you stay safe while you do common jobs around your property. Nelson jeweller Glen James Tomlinson with the two gold nuggets he found in the Lyell River. Photo: Jonty Dine.

Gold digger unearths a ‘gem’ Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Swarmed by sandflies and knee deep in muddy river water, Glen Tomlinson’s gold digging crew made a once in a lifetime discovery. Glen had unearthed a gold nugget weighing in at a whopping 3.7 ounces from the Lyell River, in Buller. The find came just one day after Glen’s son, James, discovered a 1.3 ounce nugget for a combined value of over $12,000. “We all started acting like fiveyear-olds,” says Glen. “It was weird high.” The Lyell was one of the country’s most lucrative goldmines but became unviable during the 1970s. However, as Glen found out, plenty of gold still lurks in the

Lyell waters. Following floods in December, Glen knew gold would be stirred up in the river. So armed with a pan, metal detector and shovel, the team of three headed into the West Coast wilderness. After a day of digging, the rewards were soon reaped. Glen says once James realised what it was he was shaking. “He picked it up and was looking at it with disbelief, I looked up and saw his face, it was really cool to capture that moment, I knew he had something.” James then put the gold in his sock. “It lived there, that was its safe place.” Glen’s team made the wise decision to return the next day “We got up early and just kept digging.” Glen’s experience allows him to

read the river for potential hot spots. “You can quickly rule out 95 per cent of the river. I call gold the fat, lazy man. It’s the last thing to get up and move in a flood and when it does it will move in the straightest shortest path and it will sit down as soon as it possibly can.” His instincts led him to a spot which had previously been dug by another crew. It was here that the 3.7oz nugget was found. While all profits from the gold will be split three ways, Glen has no immediate plans to sell or smelt the nuggets. “Money burns a hole in your pocket, gold doesn’t. You form a weird connection with gold, you bond with it, and so for now it will just remain on display.”

POWER LINES SAFETY FOR OUTDOOR MAINTENANCE If you’re checking or cleaning gutters and downpipes, painting the roof or eaves, or doing a job anywhere near the connection of the power lines to your house it’s important to know what to do to stay safe. Sometimes the power line can cross your property and drop quite low, or go across other structures such as a garage or a shed. Be aware of the location of the service line to your home when you’re planning how to do a job. If you’re planting trees, building fences or doing jobs on something tall in your driveway it’s always important to look up and around you to see where power lines are and keep away from them. Service Line

If you need to carry out work near your service line you can have the power disconnected temporarily for safety. The safety disconnection service can be provided by one of Network Tasman’s approved contractors, listed on our website at www.networktasman.co.nz/new-connections WASHING WALLS NEAR METER BOXES Remember, water and electricity don’t mix. So if you’re waterblasting your external walls keep away from the meter box. Water inside the meter box can cause problems. TREE TRIMMING AROUND LINES Be aware of the danger of trees connecting with the service line that goes from power poles on the street to your property. If you think your trees are getting too close to the line then it’s important to get the right advice and help to trim them back. Option 1: You can contact a network trained arborist to take care of the work as they’re trained to carry out this type of work safely. There is a list of network trained arborists on our website (visit www.networktasman.co.nz/trees-power-lines) Option 2: The power can be temporarily disconnected using the safety disconnection service so you or your contractor (e.g., a gardener) can do the work safely. (visit www.networktasman.co.nz/keep-yourself-safe). If you have a question you can email the specialists in our team at trees@networktasman.co.nz. We’re happy to provide advice to help keep you safe.

Something is different about one of the roofs at Nelson College for Girls. As of Monday, it is running 16 solar panels – helping power the school through the day with 24.2kw of electricity. “It’s generating the same power as what three households would use every day,” says school property manager Mike Cameron. Jennifer Thomas, who runs the college’s EnviroSchools programme, says it is a project a while in the making but only recently became feasible after one of its teachers, Sarah Johns, won the Prime Minister’s Science Prize. That helped offset the cost of the $50,000 project, which will also include a weather station. “We wanted to go solar powered and this gave us the opportunity,” says Jennifer. It will help Nelson College for Girls’ mission to become the first secondary school in the region to become a gold EnviroSchool. The school also took the lead on last year’s climate strikes, which saw thousands of students descend on the Church Steps to demand action on climate change. Programme member Sylvie Lloyd, 14, says that they are all passionate about the environment and helping the planet. “We are all young people and for us to start now we have our whole lives ahead of us to try and create change. It is our future.” Student Grier Rollinson, 14, says that the school also runs its own thrift shop where students can donate their clothes to on-sell. She says that the move was out of a concern for the waste created and damage caused by the fast fashion industry. When Anne-Maree Therkleson moved to Nelson just over a decade ago, she knew it was the perfect place to showcase her favourite dance. Now, she is about to celebrate ten years of tango at the ever-growing Summer Tango in Nelson Festival next weekend. Anne-Maree says the festival provides an opportunity for dancers from around New Zealand and Australia to tango all weekend long. In fact, she reckons there will be around 23 solid hours of tango dancing fun to be had. “Or more, if you can bear it.” Around 130 tango dancers are expected to attend this year, with the festival growing around 20 percent each year since its inception. “It showcases Nelson and it is a chance to make new tango friends and catch up with old ones. The magic of tango is that you change partners. It’s a lot of fun.” The festival also showcases a range of tango DJs from Germany, Sydney, Christchurch, Auckland and Nelson, including New Zealand’s only bandoneon player. The Summer Tango in Nelson Festival is on from March 6-8 at various venues, including The

A lawyer who was banned from flying with Air New Zealand for a year has failed to have the travelling ban lifted. Anjela Sharma, who ran for Nelson City Council last year, was barred from the airline’s services after a dispute over entry into the Koru Lounge spiralled. She sought an interim injunction from the Auckland High Court to quash the one-year ban by Air New Zealand. But in a decision released on Monday, Sharma’s application was dismissed. Sharma said she was travelling from Nelson to India in December 2018 with her family when they were challenged on their eligibility to be in the Koru lounge. The Sharmas were travelling from Nelson to Auckland with Air New Zealand, before travelling from Auckland to India with Singapore Airlines. Sharma said that on her understanding, their business class tickets entitled them to use Air New Zealand’s Nelson Koru Club Lounge. They were allowed to wait in the lounge for the two hours before the flight. But while waiting in the lounge, Sharma said staff challenged the family’s eligibility to be in the lounge. Sharma and her husband were Koru Club members, but none of their six children were. Staff who dealt with Sharma found her behaviour abusive and offensive. “Members of the applicant’s family called the lounge hostess stupid and racist, and mocked and loudly mimicked her voice, a report said. A member of the security staff was then called to the lounge and offered to call police. – NZ Herald

Opinion

Your Voice Response to comment in 11 February Your Voice: I was incredibly sad and incredibly angry at a reader’s comment which indicated that this large investment in “a huge retirement village” would not be good for Nelson - and in particular, the comment that [the village] “was for people at the last part of life”. Obviously this reader is, numerically at least, nowhere near this stage and I hope sincerely that she continues, in good health, to live a long and active time on this earth - and if she’s lucky - in Nelson; which is a pretty good place to reside. Is she of the opinion that people of mature years aren’t worth much? That the later years of one’s life can’t be happy and fulfilled and of use? I believe I read that there are 91 grandparents in Nelson who are raising their grandchildren - is that huge investment of time and

love (and money) of no consequence? What if the many volunteers who support a large number of community organisations and charities withdrew their services? No-one would disagree that Nelson’s economy benefits from dollars invested in schools and infrastructure but, surely, a spread of investment in areas which will benefit our population as a whole, are worthy. I genuinely hope that by the time the reader reaches a ripe old age (and you can fill your own number in here given that many retirees have varying ideas of “old/mature/elderly”), that Nelson isn’t covered by a massive carpet, and “people at the last part of life” aren’t being swept under it by younger Nelsonians. Much better a needed playground than another carpark. Let's not be too critical about what is/is not included as this is a pop-up only. Nelson Matters The greatest risk to our region this year is from the coronavirus. That is why, with Mayors Rachel Reese and Tim King, I have called a public meeting at my Nelson Electorate office this Thursday from 5pm. The coronavirus (technically known as Covid-19), was first detected in Wuhan, China, in December. It is a viral infection similar to the flu which causes a fever, cough and shortness of breath, with symptoms appearing 2-14 days after exposure. The latest numbers have 80,000 infections and 2,500 fatalities. The disease became a pandemic this week, meaning it is now a global issue with infections spreading outside China, particularly in

Italy, South Korea and Iran. Our Government’s response to the coronavirus was initially too slow. The US, UK and Australia started screening flights on 22 January but we did not do so until 27 January. We were also slower than other countries in issuing official advisories against travelling to infected areas. I have been contacted by Nelsonians travelling through our airports, concerned at the slackness of the screening. The self-quarantining of people travelling into New Zealand from infected areas was also inadequate. The Government did a good job of managing the New Zealanders on the cruise ship, Diamond Princess in Japan, by ensuring

they were properly quarantined but also well cared for. China is New Zealand’s largest trading partner and the port restrictions are rapidly impacting on that trade. Forestry imports have slowed, our ports are accumulating logs and dozens of forestry workers have had their hours and incomes cut. There is also a potential problem for our fruit exports with thousands of refrigerated containers stuck in ports. The travel ban is hitting the tourism sector nationally. We are also seeing tourism slow globally as people are more cautious of long haul international flights while the disease is spreading. International students from China are

New Wellington flights launched: Great news. I’m pretty sure I read a statement from Air NZ a while back that they would not be putting up their prices with the ending of Jetstar’s service, but, hey presto, lo and behold! NMIT’s biggest market. It is not just the impact on the polytechnic but the loss of millions of dollars of accommodation and other spending that will affect the region. I am also worried about supply lines being interrupted for other sectors. I have reports of building supplies being run down that could disrupt the building sector and other imports needed for our manufacturers. Neither I nor the Government can insulate the region from these global effects. Our job is to do everything possible to keep New Zealand free of the disease but also help protect our businesses and jobs from the economic fallout.

We may need to consider a wage subsidy programme for small businesses like what National implemented in response to the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes to help get businesses through. There is a lot of uncertainty about where the coronavirus will go. My hope is that the impact will be short term and we can quickly recover. However, we need to be well informed, work together and plan for all possibilities so as to help manage the risks and impact on people’s health, businesses and jobs.

Craig Gray dies after five-year cancer battle

Charles Anderson Editor

charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Nelson man Craig Gray has died after living with a rare blood cancer for five years. The Stoke resident was forced to source life-extending drugs from Bangladesh, at a cost of $1100 a month. His friend Paul Hampton said Craig was a “wonderful guy”. “Right from when he was diagnosed. He took it all in his stride and never said ‘why me’.” It all started in July 2015 when he was working 60 hours a week as the head chef of a local café. Then he separated from his wife and then was made redundant. He thought it was just stress – but Craig found himself forgetting things. He ran red lights. He would say the same thing over and over. He eventually went to the doctor with what he thought was a chest infection. When his blood tests finally came back the results were not good. He had stage four mantle

cell lymphoma. Craig was admitted to Nelson Tasman Hospice the Thursday before last and died last Tuesday. He was 47. Paul says even in his final hours Craig was still cracking jokes. “He was really mindful of everyone else and how they were going. He just carried himself so well.” When the Nelson Weekly first reported on Craig last November, he spoke of the financial stress of having to take a drug that Pharmac did not fund. However, he was at peace with his terminal diagnosis. He would find himself watching birds outside his window or shedding a tear watching a young family laugh at the beach. “That is what it’s about. It’s not the merry-go-round of life we should care about. We forget about the little things.” That story started a wave of media coverage which resulted in a charity raffles and his Givealittle page getting swamped with donations.

“From Craig’s point of view, we just wanted to thank everyone who supported – those who knew him and those who didn’t. The family is so genuinely appreciative of all the support.” Paul also says Craig was appreciative of being at the Nelson Tasman Hospice. “If you are in that situation, it’s such a beautiful environment.” A memorial service was held on Sunday at Gardens of the World. Paul says while Craig was content there was a sadness at leaving his two boys, Beau and Reid, behind. “They are pretty shell-shocked.” Craig wanted people to know that the Government might not always be there to help. But he was also happy. “I have two beautiful children,” he told the Nelson Weekly in November. “I’ve cooked for two prime ministers. I’ve had some good times and bad times. I’ve made people laugh and cry. Hopefully, laugh more than cry. But, yeah, I think I’ve done good.”

Craig Gray was remembered a person who looked for the beauty in life. Photo: Supplied.

BACK or NECK PAIN? Then try a Teeter WHY INVERSION?

Because in most cases it works! Inversion Therapy is the oldest recorded medical cure for back issues, first recorded by Hippocrates in 400 BC, otherwise known as spinal traction. Traction was used by modern hospitals for many years however because it is a slow process and ties up hospital beds for many weeks, they recently stopped using the treatment. Inversion Therapy is gentle and relaxing if done properly and has many other benefits apart from relieving back pain, it helps realign the spine and pelvic area, loosens up tight muscles, increases oxygen to the brain, stimulates circulation and the lymphatic system and has many other benefits.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability

Inversion NZ have been teaching people how to use this treatment for over twelve years, it is an amazing process with most people getting off the Teeter pain free for the first time in years or with their pain substantially reduced. The relief usually lasts around 30 minutes to three hours and as the pain returns you use the machine again, after using this method of treatment, in a few weeks the relief increases, which is the discs starting to retain more fluid, muscles starting to loosen up and the body coming back into alignment. In our experience most people are pain free in around three months, then the Teeter is used daily to maintain the health of the body.

WHY TEETER?

Frank Harwood (84 at time of picture) using his Teeter, Frank’s been Inverting for over eleven years and has found it keeps him young

The biggest issue with inversion tables is there is no safety standards that need to be met. Because of this, other brands use mild steel for 100% of the metal involved. Mild steel is great for static loads, in other words things that don’t move such as chairs, tables etc, however with Inversion Therapy there is considerable movement and this movement causes mild steel to flex. Because it always flexes in the same place it eventually causes metal fatigue and can result in failure. All Teeters are manufactured for extreme safety. Heat treated high tensile steel has been used in all areas subjected to stress. High tensile steel is far stronger and most importantly does not flex. This means Teeters are the strongest and safest tables on the market today.

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs:

It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when

muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.

If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.

www.inversionnz.co.nz

We host a number of back pain expos throughout the country almost every weekend, these expos are a way for people to try out a Teeter Inversion Table and feel the benefits for themselves in a way that is instructive and informative. It is also a great way for people who already own a Teeter to come along and get a refreshment course on the use and operation of their Table and clear any questions they have about it. Sessions run continuously from 10am to 4pm and there are no bookings required, just come along at a time that suits you. There may be a wait during certain times and in these instances chairs are set out for anyone waiting for a turn, or anyone who just wants to ask us a few questions. We strive to cover the entire country and always try to book the most accessible venues we can. Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car.

Rodger Fox and Michael Houstoun will be bringing special arrangements to the NCMA in April. Photo: Supplied.

World first for world class musicians Staff Reporter Rodger Fox and Michael Houstoun blend the best of classical with the best of jazz. This year, for the third time, they’re coming together. But there’s something unique and different about their partnership this time around. In the past, Rodger has sought big band arrangements of classical and contemporary piano works. He’s found them, they’ve succeeded, and Michael, along with Rodger and his big band, have toured New Zealand performing them. But for our pre-eminent pianist and foremost jazz trombonist, that’s not enough. In the 2020 concert tour, which includes Palmerston North, Blenheim and Nelson and concludes at the Wellington Jazz Festival on June 7, Rodger has commissioned arrangements especially for Michael. Those arrangements will be premiered at the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts on Sunday, April 19 at 4pm. Michael has been a long-time devotee of Canadian rock singer and songwriter Gino Vannelli, and Rodger Fox has commissioned internationally acclaimed composer-arranger, Bill

Cunliffe, to feature special piano and jazz big band arrangements of two of Vannelli’s great numbers. Both Rodger Fox and Michael Houstoun have illustrious careers. Fox joined Quincy Conserve, a band that defined New Zealand music in the early 1970s, and continued to establish his own Rodger Fox Big Band which has performed in concert with some of the biggest names in the jazz and entertainment world. Michael Houstoun was a finalist in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and the Leeds and Tchaikovsky competitions. Despite performing with distinction in the UK, Europe and USA, he returned to New Zealand where he’s performed a large and demanding repertoire ever since. “Last series, two audiences, both classical and jazz, came together to enjoy our concerts. I’m certain they’ll love this tour even more because of the world premiere music being performed,” Rodger says. The Houstoun-Fox 2020 Concert Series performs at the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts on Sunday, April 19 at 4pm. Book at www.ticketdirect.co.nz.

Tasman seals famous victory Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Tasman United pulled off the upset of the season - knocking over the previously undefeated Auckland City 2-1 at Trafalgar Park on Sunday afternoon. A late Jean Philippe Saiko strike sealed the famous victory to send the home crowd into a frenzy and end Auckland’s 15-match, 27-month unbeaten run. Captain Fox Slotemaker opened the scoring and says, while everyone one else may have written them off prior to kick off, Tasman believed in themselves. “It’s unreal, coming into it I don’t think anyone gave us a chance but we were eyeing up three points.” The clash was incredibly heated with a number of altercations between players. “We weren’t going to let them come here and have their way with us like they do with a lot of teams. In order to beat a team like Auckland City, you’ve got to win the battle. It can get feisty at times, and I don’t think they like a lot of it but that’s fine with us, we want to make this a fortress.” A superb effort in goal from Nick

Stanton frustrated Auckland City who could only find a way past once, while New Zealand U17 player Jesse Randall was relentless on attack. “I’m super proud of everyone, we never gave up and the harder working team won,” Slotemaker says. The win takes Tasman to 19 points with its sixth win of the season as they sit fifth on the National Football Premiership table. Fox says they will carry this momentum into the final few rounds of the season. “We have that belief we can beat anyone on our day.” Tasman asked plenty of early questions of the Auckland defence. The pressure saw the visitors almost concede a disastrous own goal. Saiko was yellow carded inside the opening quarter for instigating a brief scuffle as both teams looked to assert their authority. The shackles were finally broken just before the break as Slotemaker hit a precision header inside the left hand upright. However, Auckland responded almost immediately in identical

Auckland were millimetres from taking the lead into halftime if not for the first of several stunning saves from Stanton. Saiko became the target of some aggressive Auckland defence in the second, as tensions boiled over several times. The table toppers hammered away at Tasman but Stanton was

Just as the match seemed destined for a draw, Tasman broke out of its own half, Corey Larsen weaved around two would-be Auckland tacklers and linked up with Saiko who hammered it home for his

sixth and easily most important goal of the season. Tasman survived a nervous 90 seconds before the final whistle was blown and celebrations ensued.

Zohrab guides ACOB to title Locally Owned and Operated

Peter Grigg Athletic College Old Boys has claimed its first TPL club cricket competition in a scintillating encounter against Stoke Nayland at Saxton Oval. Stoke Nayland were looking for a three-peat but it was ACOB’s Thomas Zohrab, who produced an extraordinary performance to spoil the party. Zohrab took 7/26 and scored 62 against Nelson College on Saturday to book his side’s spot in Sunday’s final. The championship then came down to the final delivery with Stoke Nayland requiring three to win off the last delivery. Zohrab held his nerve to cap a superb weekend and an inaugural title for his side. The drama begun when ACOB won the toss and at 159/4 after 38 overs they would have been looking towards a total in excess of 220. The Stoke Nayland bowlers and fielders though produced a solid allround effort at the back end of the innings to restrict them to just 190. With the third ball of the day,

Thomas Zohrab’s superb all-round effort led his side to a maiden TPL title at the weekend. Photo: Evan Barnes/Shuttersport. Zohrab displayed the true foibles of cricket at its best as he left a Dylan Eginton delivery and was bowled for a duck. This bought in Josh Simpson and, with Nic Clark, the pair produced some nice shot play and astute running between the wickets. Upon Simpson’s dismissal, Jake Milton assisted Clark in keeping the score ticking away nicely. Clark scored a well-deserved half

century before he was bowled by Paddy Howes. Things then went slightly awry with the ACOB batting and they finished all out in the 47th over with Chitty stranded on 32. The run chase begun swimmingly enough as Kurt Pahl and Chris Dittmer both appeared unbothered by the seamers at the top of the innings. The spinners then applied the

squeeze on the Stoke Nayland middle order. David Zohrab, Simpson and Jake Milton bowled 29 overs for a combined analysis of three for 105 to put the heat on all the batsmen. Thomas Zohrab then took centre stage. He bowled in four spells to completely dominate proceedings. He dismissed Dittmer then, in what was probably the defining over of

the innings, he got rid of two more. At 162/5, ACOB begun to apply the pressure and Stoke Nayland begun to wilt. The required run rate slowly slid up as wickets continued to tumble. Zohrab dismissed the dangerous Eginton and his twin brother, David, and then got rid of skipper Brendan Hodgson as he attempted to take charge. As Zohrab began the final over, seven were required for victory. He claimed another couple of victims and ACOB finally iced a victory over their old rivals as O’Connor was judged out caught behind off the last ball of the 50th over, having required three runs to secure victory.

Scorecard ACOB 190 Nic Clark 53, Josh Simpson 48, Greg Chitty 32*, Thomas Chambers 3/39, Paddy Howes 2/31 Stoke Nayland 187/9 Chris Dittmer 55, Kurt Pahl 34, Ricky Edwards 34, Darius Skeaping 30, Thomas Zohrab 5/19, Josh Simpson 2/35 ACOB won by 3 runs

Coronavirus causes school havoc Locally Owned and Operated

Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The dream of playing in a curtainraiser to the All Black Sevens has been ripped away from a team of young Nelson College rugby players, at least for now. With the ongoing threat of coronavirus, the decision was made to cancel the Nelson College U14 team’s trip to Singapore. Captain Harrison Inch is one of 24 heartbroken players who had done everything from park cars to chop wood in order to fund the trip. “It’s pretty annoying, everyone’s pretty gutted but we are going to stick at it, keep training.” Rugby director Peter Grigg says the trip was planned for April 4-12 and would have culminated in the Ruck ‘n Rumble tournament, which would see the final precede the Singapore Sevens. But with schools in Singapore banning students from playing rugby and the cancellation of the Singapore Sevens, the decision to cancel was essentially made for the touring party.

Captain of the Nelson College U14 team Harrison Inch has had his first overseas rugby trip cancelled due to the coronavirus. Photo: Jonty Dine. “We didn’t have much of a choice,” says Peter. However, not all hope is lost as the trip may potentially be rescheduled for later in the year. There are, of course, a number of logistical issues to make that

possible. Peter says a number of deposits had been paid for accommodation which will hopefully transfer. Flights were also booked and the more than 50 parents in the travelling party had arranged

time off work. “Air New Zealand have been difficult to deal with. There is going to be a transfer fee.” Harrison says he and his teammates have their fingers firmly crossed for later in the year

“It will be a shame if the opportunity is missed but we are still very hopeful,” Peter says. The boys raised more than $20,000 working over the holidays including splitting and selling wood. “It was a lot of hard work but hopefully it will be worth it.” Elsewhere, other colleges are feeling the impact of the coronavirus, too. Nayland College principal Daniel Wilson says one international student was quarantined in Hong Kong and one domestic student was also quarantined as a family member had recently been in China. “Both have been given the all clear.” Nelson College for Girls principal Cathy Ewing says they have a school trip to Japan scheduled for later in the year but hope that the situation would have resolved by then. “We have only one international student affected. She has not been able to leave China because of the New Zealand Government’s action to protect our borders.”

SPORTS Swimming: Auckland swimmer Sebastien Priscott took line honours in the 5km Generation Homes La Grande swim in Akaroa on Saturday, while Nelson swimmer Abbey Smale finished fourth overall to take the women’s title. The Akaroa event was race three in the national Banana Boat series, following races on Auckland’s North Shore and in Wellington Harbour. Wellington winner Luke Kelly added to the Nelson success story, finishing second on Saturday. In addition to Luke and Abbey’s overall success, Nelson’s Terry Bone broke into the top ten with a sixth placing. The three also won gold medals in their M20-24, F15-19 and M45-49 age groups. Full details and results at oceanswim.co.nz Rugby: Six-test All Blacks prop Tim Perry has called time on his rugby career. The three-time Super Rugby champion could have looked for a big pay cheque playing overseas but chose to quietly bow out of the game instead. Perry’s six tests came in

Bowls: The final of the mixed pairs in the Stoke Bowls Championships was played on Saturday and was won by New Zealand champion Kirsten Edwards and Brendon Hodgson. The pair defeated Doug Mountfort and Jenny Vaile 25-8 in a one-sided contest to close out the season. Running: This year, the annual Mt Robert Race was held as a memorial event for Eric Verstappen, who had been solely responsible for keeping the event alive for over 30 years. Eric, the President of Athletics Nelson for well over 10 years, was a stalwart member of the club and a fellow runner and walker. A field of 45 runners and walkers headed out from the DOC Centre at St Arnaud to take up the challenge of running the demanding 18km circuit.
