As a former mistreated pig-hunting dog, he often has nightmares about his past life which comprised of pain, hunger and entrapment. A heartbroken Nelson tennis club has had a piece of its history stolen during a brazen break-in at the weekend. The trophy cabinet at the Tahunanui Tennis Club was completely cleared out by thieves who broke in on Friday evening. Club president Craig Welsh says it’s “disgusting behaviour” and that the trophies were a prominent feature of the club with strong sentimental value. This included some trophies with names of members engraved on them, who have since died. It is understood that the doors had been levered open with a screwdriver. The room was in complete disarray with cakes from the kitchen trodden into the ground, sofas overturned and ripped up, tennis equipment strewn all over the floor and the gate system smashed. “Everyone in the club is pretty disheartened and annoyed,” says Craig. The club is making a passionate plea to anyone that might know the whereabouts of the trophies so they can be returned to the club.

for coronavirus in Nelson Nelson Marlborough Health has confirmed that two people from the region are being monitored for any signs they have contracted the Covid-19 virus. A health board spokesperson says the two were passengers on the Emirates flight from Dubai to Auckland, via Bali, on which a traveller was confirmed on Friday as having the virus. The two people are now in isolation and are being monitored daily by the Nelson Marlborough Public Health Services. The board says neither has been tested. It has been on alert since January and has since been planning a management response.

Nelsonians forked out a whopping $1.6 million in speeding fines last year, the most since 2013. The figures released by New Zealand Police show more than 24,000 speeding tickets were issued in Nelson Bays during 2019, from a combination of mobile speed cameras and officer issued infringements. Almost 19,000 of the tickets came from mobile speed cameras strategically placed around the region. The large figure is the most we have paid out since 2013, when the figure sat just over $1.7 million. Just over the hill in Marlborough, drivers were issued just $737,000 of speeding fines throughout the year, half as much as Nelson. Nationally, drivers copped more than $115 million in speeding fines during 2019. As well as being hit in the pocket for speeding, Nelsonians also racked up more than $268,000 in road-

Tasman road policing manager senior sergeant Grant Andrews says it’s extremely disappointing to see the figures rising. “It’s just really poor,” he says. “We’d love to go out there and not issue anyone a ticket, it would be great, but the reality is people are just getting worse, particularly with using their phones.” In 2019, 977 infringements were given to drivers for using their mobiles, up from 555 the previous year. Grant says if drivers’ attitudes don’t change, the numbers
will again increase again this year. “These are the things that cause people injuries; not wearing restraints, using mobiles, driving while impaired and speeding. We will be doing weekly operations to make sure these people are held to account. we would like to mount these operations and have a negative result, that would be fantastic.” Grant says it’s not just about the person using their phone or speeding. “It’s about the people they are putting at risk and the lifechanging injuries that they can inflict on the pedestrians or the other road users.”

Community prepares for coronavirus NEWS Matt McCrorie The Nelson region is already feeling the effects of coronavirus, or Covid-19, with community leaders and local employers holding a public meeting to discuss plans to deal with the global pandemic. The meeting, organised by Nelson MP Nick Smith, with Tasman Mayor Tim King and Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese, brought together community leaders and businesses owners to discuss both health and business concerns on Thursday last week. Announced on Friday, one person has been confirmed to have Covid-19 in New Zealand. A further 18 people that were seated near the person have been contacted and are in self-isolation. Nick Smith said at the meeting that the region is already starting to feel the effects of the virus that originated in mainland China, particularly when it comes to the forestry industry and tourism, as well as education. Nick said that coronavirus is the “biggest risk to our regional economy this year,” and that the meeting was arranged to work with the community to figure out how best to support one another. Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce chief executive Ali
Dale Ewers, of Moutere Logging, says the Chinese wharves are bulging with timber that can’t be unloaded due to the impact of coronavirus. Photo: Matt McCrorie. Boswijk says that one of the main problems businesses are having is access to supply. “A lot of people are not being able to access supplies out of China. We’ve got a number of businesses that rely totally on China for their goods to run their businesses, so they’re the most vulnerable.” The forestry sector is another area which is seeing the trickle-down effects of the virus. Dale Ewers, of Moutere Logging, says Chinese wharves are bulging with timber that can’t be unloaded. “I know of three contractors here in Nelson that have lost their contracts. That’s potentially about
45 people out of work in the logging scene here, and that has a flow-on effect to contractors and everyone to the corner dairy.” While the virus has had an impact on the forestry sector, Dale says that the Nelson and Tasman regions run 35-40 per cent export overseas. “The timing has been okay because there has been a bigger demand for domestic logs here in Nelson. We’ve transferred some of our cuts across to the domestic market, but that will have an impact in a couple months’ time.” Education is another part of the local economy facing the flow on effects of the virus.
Chief executive of NMIT, Liam Sloan, says that 40 students from China haven’t been able to get here. The institution usually expects another 100 students to join throughout the year. Liam says there could be further impacts for local families. Seventy per cent of the students coming from China would typically lodge with home-stay parents, many of whom depend on hosting students to make ends meet. The Nelson Marlborough DHB is also preparing for the virus to reach the region. Chief executive Peter Bramley says that the DHB wants to reassure the public that they are very busy behind the scenes doing lots of preparation. Chief medical officer Nick Baker says that the good news was that some countries like Japan have managed to contain explosive growth for the virus. “We’ve got an emergency coordination centre and we’ve got some community emergency operations centres, looking at supplies of equipment and making sure that we’ve got plans for isolation and quarantine.” He says that people need to remember best practices like simply washing their hands and covering themselves when coughing and sneezing.

New MRI for Nelson: Nelson Hospital’s new Siemens scanner has now been installed. The MRI can produce much clearer images, can scan a lot faster and even allows patients to listen to music. The installation began in July 2019 and is part of a new $2.8 million investment by Nelson Marlborough Health. It’s a step forward for the radiology technology that will allow more space for other clinicians and clinical equipment. Now patients will no longer have to face long waiting times and having to travel to hospitals in Blenheim. Wildlife sanctuary reopens following fire threats: Brook Waimarama Sanctuary, the largest fenced haven for endangered plants and creatures in the South Island, reopened on Saturday. Having closed due to fire risk, the sanctuary is now open three days a week from Friday to Sunday and every day during the Easter holidays. Ru Colin, the CEO of the sanctuary says, “it’s a wonderful place to visit to feel more connected to nature and annual supporters have unlimited access to the sanctuary all year round”. Reduced rates are also offered for community service card holders and for students.

Sam’s second chance at life FROM PAGE 1 biting at his cage. Fast forward nine-months, Sam weighs 29kg and is a changed pup - thanks to the Nelson SPCA and his foster mum, Deb. “He was so terribly thin,” says Deb, who has requested her surname isn’t published. “We took him in because we were worried about him. He is the kind of dog that is going to have trouble.” Sam spent a few months at the SPCA recovering before Deb and her husband took him into their home, where is now enjoying a life of cuddles, playdates with his “girlfriends” and, of course, food. “He hasn’t got many teeth. He’s lost all his canines and only one side of his back teeth match up. “He loves bones but can only suck and slobber on them.” But that hasn’t stopped him getting into the rubbish bin on several occasions. “He got into a bag of old pies and some chop bones - we had to rush him off to the vet after that. But they dissolved so we were lucky,” Deb adds. “He’s got not control with food as he’s been too hungry for too long.” Sam is still adjusting to his new life and, although his people skills are good now, he struggles in open spaces and has no spatial awareness. “He walks on and over our other dogs, making himself unpopular. But we manage it. He is slowly but steadily improving week by week.” Deb says when she first met Sam, he jumped up and knocked out the crown on her front tooth. “It was just impulse control. He didn’t know how to be patted.” Although the scars on his body will be a permanent reminder of his past life, Sam couldn’t be happier, and Deb will keep him until she finds him the perfect home. Donna Walzl, manager of the Nelson SPCA says Sam’s transformation is remarkable. “When he was picked up, Sam almost seemed like he was depressed. Now, he is barely recognisable from the dog who arrived.” Unfortunately, Donna says they do see a number of dogs in light to poor body condition. The help SPCA offers animals like Sam would be impossible without the support of the community and the charity’s annual appeal is now on until March 8.

Stopping addiction before it starts Kate Russell A pilot programme aiming to stop alcohol and cannabis addiction before it gets too serious is proving successful in Nelson. Nelson Bays Primary Health began funding the service at the Victory Community Centre last March to “fill a gap” in the community, and it has been renewed for another year due to the level of response. “The demand is there,” says the driver of the service, Sabien Blazek. “We’re so used to focussing on people at the high end of the spectrum, but the idea with this is to prevent people from having a more severe problem.” The early intervention programme aims to provide guidance and education for mild to moderate alcohol and cannabis users over the age of 25 through four free sessions. “People are either referred to me, or they self-refer. For example, I get people who call in concerned about their use of alcohol and need support to either cut back or stop.” The current guidelines for women are no more than 10 standard drinks per week, and 15 for men and Sabien says once people know this, they

But I feel the awareness is increasing.” The service is also based at the Tahunanui Community Centre once a week and visits GPs and workplaces. Sabien says she hopes she can reach more people this way. According to Nelson Marlborough Health, 4.6 per cent of all presentations to Nelson ED in the

past eight months have been due to alcohol consumption. This spiked over the new year period with 232 admissions in December and January combined. “The objective is to provide an accessible service to anybody in the Nelson or Richmond. Being in a community centre is quite unique as it’s a clinical role, but I think it’s less intimidating for people.” For more information, contact Sabien at vccaod@victory.school.nz

Nelson putting declaration into action Jonty Dine While a number of New Zealand regional councils have made a climate emergency declaration, it is Nelson leading the charge with its actions. Nelson hosted a climate forum at Annesbrook Church on Saturday, with more than 300 concerned citizens determined to make a change. Green Party leader James Shaw opened the forum, which was a first of its kind for the country. “Nelson is really leading on climate change.” James says the “extraordinary gathering” is the first of what needs to be a number of serious community led discussions around climate change. “It’s not just about today, but what comes next.” The forum gave locals the opportunity “to join a critical conversation for our region’s future”. Oaklands Milk owner and Tasman Environment Award winner Juliane Raine had an ongoing commitment to the
environment and a better future. “This is a journey, it’s not something we can change overnight.” Interim co-chair Julie Nevin instigated the forum and was blown away by the response. “It has exploded beyond all expectations.” She says the community must lead the way in identifying urgent strategic action to combat climate change. “The Government needs us to do this mahi as much as we need them to do theirs so this is a bridge between the community and governance.” Also in attendance was ‘School Strike 4 Climate’ leader Raven Maeder and Nelson City Council’s climate champion Chris Cameron. The forum concluded with interactive workshops on all aspects of preventing and adapting to climate change. The Nelson Tasman Climate Forum will meet once a month with the next forum to be on March 14.

Rhys literally pouring his own pints Harri Jordan Rhys Clark is used pouring pints but not having his name on the front of one. As the bar manager of The Free House he unexpectedly found himself as the inspiration behind a Wellington craftbrewer’s latest hazy IPA. “I thought they were joking at first,” Rhys says. The three owners of Parrot Dog in Wellington are originally from Nelson and frequent The Free House every summer. They invited Rhys up to their brewery in Lyall Bay for some experimental brewing before their Christmas party. Rhys decided to bring up his own creation that he had been making at home. Using repurposed kitchen equipment, he makes up to 40 litres of new flavours each time. Infused with chunks of dried coconut, the ‘Rhys Coconut Hazy IPA’ combines a sharp citrus flavour with smooth coconut. It goes without saying that the beer was a hit at the Christmas party, and it wasn’t long before Parrot Dog were back in

The launch party of the ‘Rhys’ at The Free House on Thursday saw 100 litres of the beer run out in just two days. “It’s pretty weird hearing people coming up to the bar and saying your name hundreds of times,” says Rhys.
The beer has been a huge hit nationwide with online reviewers. “Shared this round a table last night and the overwhelming response was give me more,” one said. “Brilliant idea flawlessly executed.” On the March 14, Nelson’s craft beer festival ‘March Fest’ will be taking place at Founders Heritage Park and Rhys says the beer will be featuring “if there’s any left”.

The Nelson region saw more than 85 motorcycles roll into town over the weekend as part of a national event for dozens of Triumph enthusiasts. The 9th AGM of the national Triumph Riders Motorcycle Club, which was hosted by the Nelson Chapter, saw all shapes and sizes of the motorcycles parked up – from older bikes to the latest “rockets”, according to New Zealand Vice President Chris Harvey. Chris says the event was a great success with 110 attendees from as far away as Northland and
Alexandra coming to town. The riders went out to Tapawera and Moutere and then back into the city for a dinner and charity auction at Smugglers, in Tahunanui, which raised more than $3500 for St Johns. “Everyone had a great time. It all went very smoothly,” says Chris. He says that Triumph enthusiasts have a saying: “For the ride.” “We just love Triumphs. We have a real mix of people in our club that numbers 400 nationally.” Chris says the members are now looking forward to next year where the club has its 10-year anniversary in Whanganui, where it was founded.

Meet Nelson’s man at the TOP Locally Owned and Operated
Charles Anderson Editor
charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Matthew Pottinger knows that renting sucks. He also knows that he isn’t your typical politician. As an engineer turned entrepreneur, he grew the company he founded in university into a premier developer of technology. One Giant Leap embeds sensors into paddles that allows worldclass kayakers to monitor their performance through the water. “I’m a bit of a get s*** done kind of guy,” he says. “I’m solutions focused.” But when he and his young family, including two young girls, were kicked out of their Nelson rental 18 months ago, something changed. “I thought ‘I can’t just sit here and look at all the charts of rising inequality’.” So, at the last election, he voted for The Opportunities Party, which was founded by Gareth Morgan on the back of sensible policy. While they only received
Matthew Pottinger has been announced as The Opportunities Party’s Nelson candidate. Photo: Charles Anderson. 2.5 per cent of the vote, Matthew is confident the message resonates with Nelsonians. “I’m an anti-politician. I’ve never done anything like this before but I’m big on evidence, and what works and on delivering. It’s all I do and all I know.” He points to fixing the country’s ever-increasing house prices as the key to solving much of its
problems. “It permeates all aspects of the economy. It is the main driver for poverty and, because the more expensive our houses become, the more money we have tied up in them. So, our productivity is woefully low. We are spending all our money putting a roof over our heads.” The solution to this, Matthew
says, is by fixing the tax system which favors those who own many properties. His party suggests a tax that acts almost as a rate on any major nonfinancial asset which could offset income taxes and make them lower. Matthew says that 80 per cent of Kiwis would be paying less tax under this system, as 40 per cent don’t own property and 40 per cent
only own the home they live in. It would be the 20 per cent who are the wealthiest that would be affected the most. “This is a lever we can bring in.” The idea would be to stabilise house prices for 10-15 years. “In Nelson people are paying huge irrational prices to get the benefits of owning your home or to escape renting because, I can tell you from personal experience, it sucks.” He says by shifting our money into developing businesses rather than sinking it into homes we could lift our standard of living. “We can ease ourselves out of this mess. We squeezed the juice out of this orange. It was fun but we have come to the point where it is a social and economic disaster.” Matthew says he is prepared for the campaign because he is just communicating “how it is”. “I want the party to have representation because I believe we are not hearing that side of the story. Whether the Nelson electorate resonates with the story is something that remains to be seen.”

Opinion
Your Voice Loaves and fishes Thanks for coming to join us at the first Loaves and Fishes meal for 2020 on February 11, and for the article which was published in the 19/2/20 edition. I felt that the article was heart-warming and inclusive. Alison Mountfort Mayor's "priorities" Heaven help Nelson if Mayor Reece’s “priorities” are as per your article. Boiling down the blurb, her expectations of cycleways and bus transport ignore basics like how households would manage to transport their volumes of supermarket-necessities. To claim her new council “is going extremely well, that everyone is positive and keen to get on with things” is a bizarre misrepresentation of actuality. In so many respects, council is determinably
malfunctioning. Worse, the extensive absences she’ll be taking via her Clinton Foundation grant, which she withheld willfully from Nelson voters prior to her reelection, indicate a far less than solid commitment to her elected position - let alone “uplifting of council performance”. That she contrived to have a climate change “emergency” declared in Nelson and Port Nelson dividend subverted from its annual-plan course was a completely unjustifiable imposition on ratepayers. Nothing less than blatant posturing - because nothing remotely akin to a civic “emergency” existed. Nelson city’s area is just 3/10,000ths (three tenthousandths) of world land-area, so it’s baffling that anyone could argue the need, let alone see fit, to inflict such nonsense on ratepayers. It shouldn’t have to be spelled out, but absolutely nothing that’s done here, or in all of New Zealand, will have even the most microscopic effect on world climate. How can such squandering of

council monies be justified? Jim Cable Mayor’s response Thank you to Mr Cable for his views. I always value the opportunity to read the thoughts of our ratepayers, but also the chance to respond. Mr Cable’s views on climate change are not shared by any major political party in New Zealand, nor are they shared with the views of an overwhelming number of esteemed global scientists, the Head of the Commonwealth, the majority of Kiwi businesses, or the law-
makers in our country. This isn’t someone else’s problem. We are global citizens and we must play our part in doing the right thing. This is why Nelson City Council - Te Kaunihera o Whakatū, declared a climate change emergency last year, a watershed moment for us as a region, as we tackle the global challenge of climate change in our own backyard. Council’s commitment is to a sustainable transport network. This does include private vehicle use and recognises the value this form of transport choice provides. But
Nelson Matters The Nelson public meeting I hosted on the coronavirus with Mayors Rachel Reese and Tim King was sobering but informative. This global pandemic poses the greatest risk to our Nelson and Tasman region this year. The impacts are already being felt by our forestry, tourism and education sectors. Forest workers are having their hours cut and some will soon face redundancy. Local tourism businesses are already facing cancellations. NMIT is facing an income loss of $1.5m with Chinese students unable to travel. There is also concerns in the fruit industry about the thousands of refrigerated containers stuck in Asian ports that are needed for ex-
porting this season’s crop. Local manufacturers are concerned about the reduction of supply lines of essential components. Parts of the fishing industry like crayfish are being severely impacted by the stall in sales to China. New Zealand has now been confirmed to have its first coronavirus case with one of our citizens returning from Iran being treated and in quarantine at Auckland Hospital. Two Nelson passengers on the same flight from Bali are in self-isolation. Government’s response to the coronavirus was initially too slow. We were behind the US, UK and Australia in screening flights and in advising New
Zealanders of the travel risks. I have had Nelson constituents contact me concerned about the inadequacy of airport screening. We need to lift our game to do everything possible to stop the disease spreading. The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board has given good advice for how our region can best cope. We need to be extra cautious if we have flu like symptoms in not going to school, work, or other places where we could spread the disease. We need to be extra vigilant with washing our hands in warm soapy water. Someone who suspects they may have the disease should not go unannounced to your doctor or

hospitals for risk of spreading it. The Health Board is strongly encouraging people to get the flu vaccine prior to this winter, so as to reduce the pressures on our health system this winter so it is better able to cope with any cases of the coronavirus. They also wisely urge us to heed the advice from the Health Ministry website as the situation is uncertain and changing. People should be cautious of misinformation particularly on some social media. There were constructive ideas from the meeting. We should consider a domestic tourism promotion as Australia is doing with Government support to encourage people to holiday locally in areas like Nelson and Tasman.
Breaking News
not at any cost. We see significant value in expanding public transport and active transport networks in a way that meets the choice that Nelsonians have been requesting for some time. Our challenge is having a workable transport network to operate within and getting funding from central Government to support it. I will continue to support professional development for all elected members, including myself. I am passionate about this region and dedicate long hours to my role as mayor without hesitation. I would like to note the international fellowship to which Mr Cable referred, came at no cost to the ratepayers.
Government needs to support small businesses in hard hit areas like forestry as National did in the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes with a wage subsidy for a period if people start being made redundant. We may also need to consider supporting greater sick pay entitlements funded by Government if the disease does spread, so people will self-isolate, stay home and not spread the disease. We need to work together so as to protect people’s health, businesses and jobs as much as humanly possible.

Volunteering just for the love of it Locally Owned and Operated
Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
When Wendy Barrett was made redundant just before her 65th birthday, she was far from ready to give up work. “I’m not the sort of person who can sit around and do nothing,” she says. With 13 years’ experience in the aged care field, she began volunteering for Age Concern Nelson Tasman, where she has proved to be an invaluable aide for the past two years. Arranging outings and office work are just some of the things she helps with during her two days there a week. Others like Wendy will be able to find out more about volunteering at the very first Nelson Connects Volunteer Expo this weekend. Whether you’re a teenager, soon-to-be retiree, ablebodied or challenged, English speaker or learning
AgeConnect coordinator at Age Concern Nelson Tasman Ruth Collingham with volunteer Wendy Barrett. Photo: Kate Russell. - there will be something for everyone. From arts and heritage, helping animals to supporting former refugees, there will be information on how to get involved at more than 30 community
organisations from across the region. Wendy says she gets a lot out of volunteering and would love to see more people in Nelson consider it, especially men. “There’s always a need for
volunteers - there is never enough, and I do it because I love it. My reward is seeing the smiles on people’s faces.” The Nelson Connects Volunteer Expo is on Saturday, 7 March from 10am - 2pm at Annesbrook Church.

Council moves costume collection
A Nelson City Council-lead project, helped by team of volunteers, has re-organised and moved a 3000-piece collection at Broadgreen Textile and Costume Collection. The new storage solution is museum-standard and means that the items in collection are stored more safely and can be accessed far more quickly. The project took months of planning and more than a week to complete, but now, are on display at Broadgreen House as part of the ‘A Passage to Nelson – Unpacking the Past’ exhibition, which charts the journey of early immigrants to Nelson. The exhibition includes a selection of first-hand costumes and fashion from the mid-19th century and is a must see for any fashion enthusiasts.

Tahunanui Community Hub
It’s been a busy start to 2020 for the Tahunanui Community Hub. Firstly, we have some new board members after Murray Leaning and Robin Whalley stepped down from their respective roles as chair and treasurer of the board at the end of last year. Both men put in an incredible amount of hours and personal sacrifice to help save the hub last year and as a community I think Tahunanui owes them both a huge debt of gratitude. Jacinda Stevenson has also stepped down, in their place comes in Tom Pyatt and John Baker with two more due to be added at our next meeting in March. The second big announcement is that the hub has sold the former preschool building to Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association. The Kindergarten has been operating the facility since the start of 2019 and the deal means it can continue to offer outstanding education to Tahunanui families free of charge while the community hub is able to secure its financial future and focus on our core role of running the hub. Proceeds from the sale will be invested into a trust for the benefit of Tahunanui residents. Selling the building has been a long process and one that we’ve been communicating via two public meetings held last year. Finally, I’d like to say a huge thanks to Mark French and his team who run the hub on a day-to-day basis. Each month they add more activities and events to the calendar and we see more and more people using the facility. It’s an exciting time for the hub, last year was about survival. This year will be about growth and we’d love to have you on board. Check out our new website for more information about what we’ve got going on.

As we near the third month, we pause to reflect on what has been going on at the Hub since reopening in January. Well, it has been a busy one! We have had the return of some of our regular fitness classes, as well as the book club, arts and crafts group, and gardening group starting again for 2020. To top this off, we have had some fantastic new groups wanting to use our space, these include; a new men’s wellness group, and, a youth group from Aspire Church. Workshops and seminars have become a popular booking at the Hub with Grandparents Raising Grandparents using our space for a workshop and two-day suicide prevention workshop being held in the last two weeks, with many more to come. We encourage further workshops to be held at the Hub, so get in contact with us to discuss the options. Kai Rescue continues to be a well- received feature of the Hub and it is wonderful to see how much it is helping our community. We would like to thank the Nelson Environment Centre, Fresh Choice Richmond, Fresh As Bakery Tahunanui and Kai with Love, for your support in providing this food for us. If anyone in the community has excess produce in their gardens, bring it down to the Hub and we will put it out for the whole community. Our Drop In Café (newly renamed Neighbour’s Café) has begun again too, so pop along to the Hub midday on Thursdays for a cuppa, bakery treats and conversation! And the exciting news keeps coming, our new Kai Kart has been built and will be at the

One of the main Hub priorities is to connect with other services, so in line with this Mark, our Operations Coordinator, recently visited Victory Community Centre to check out what services they provide and how we can work together. We look forward to collaborating with Victory Community Centre in future. Finally, and possibly the most exciting news, we have new signage! Our new signage makes the Hub more visible to those driving past, making us easier to find. Check out the photo above! Thank you to Speedy Signs Nelson for putting these up for us!

Ben’s hopes for ‘clean’ regatta Jonty Dine

Ben Mangin dreams of an ocean free of plastic. The 17-year-old says the ocean is his playground and he wants to preserve it. Ben is a member of the Nelson Yacht Club and says sailors can often be perpetrators of plastic waste. So when hundreds of sailors descend on Nelson in April for the national starling regatta, the potential for waste is large. However, in a bid to reduce waste, Ben has convinced his club to host a ‘clean regatta’. Clean Regattas is the world’s leading sustainability certification for all water events. Initiatives such as going paperless, sourcing local food and reducing water bottle usage will all be implemented in upcoming regatta. “The kinds of things people are starting to do in their day to day lives so we remove as much waste as possible,” says Ben. He says plastic can be a major issue at big regattas, with bottles, bow stickers and bags often ending up in the sea. “Increasing awareness is important, as everyone wants to do the right
thing.” Ben says he has had a tremendously positive response from those coming, supporting the concept of a clean regatta. He hopes for it to become the norm in future. “There is work to do.” Ben says they also plan to hold beach clean ups during the four day event. The Waimea College student has been sailing since he was nine and hopes future generations can continue to do so. “I love being out on the water, you can just clear your head and enjoy the thrill of speed.” Since the programme’s inception in 2006, over 2,300 events have shown their commitments to sustainability by hosting Clean Regattas. The programme has reached over 660,000 sailors and attendees in over 40 countries. The National Starling Championships will be held in Nelson from April 14-19. Locals lead Tasman resurgence Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Lucas Hogg faced a daunting task during his debut for Tasman last month. The teenager was introduced to the National Football League against the best side in the league, riding a three-year, 49-match unbeaten run. However, against all odds, Tasman pulled off the upset of the season and ended the streak in spectacular fashion in Nelson a fortnight ago. “To not just get a get a debut but to beat a team like Auckland City, it was awesome,” says Lucas. Lucas played every minute of the historic 2-1 victory. “I was surprised to get picked in the squad let alone start.” Lucas had been training with the squad but was given no indication he would feature during the season.
However, following an injury to Hamish Cadigan, the door opened for the 19-year-old and coach Jess Ibrom showed faith in his rookie left back. “I was nervous, but the boys prepared me right. Once I got on there, my nerves went away.” Lucas preparations were hampered by a niggle in his knee. “On Friday I got a knock and Saturday morning I was 50-50 whether I was going to play, but we just strapped it up and it held up ok.” The clash was incredibly heated with a number of altercations between players. “There were a couple of scuffles but I just stayed away, not really my thing. Auckland are always going to be dominant, so we had a plan that we were going to sit back, defend and take our chances when we got them.” Tasman certainly did that with Jean Philippe Saikpo slotting the match winner in the 94th

The Waimea College product says the side will now be full of confidence as they look to push into play offs. “It’s a massive opportunity to make the finals and make it the
best season Tasman has ever had.” Lucas is one of a number of local helping lead a resurgence at the franchise. After being written off early in the season, Tasman United has enjoyed a rich run of form lately including the historic scalp against Auckland City. A mass exodus at Christmas time did not inspire confidence for fans but Tasman has since silenced its doubters and are now right in contention for a play-off spot. Fellow Nelsonians such as Nick Stanton, Billy Scott, Fox Slotemaker, Matt Tod-Smith, Max Winterton, Sam Wilson, Lachie Brooks, Scott Morris, Josh Creswell have all played their part in the turnaround. With a bye last weekend Tasman travel to the capital this weekend to take on the Wellington Phoenix reserves. Kick off at Porirua Park is 2pm on Sunday.

Nelson football star Amelia Abbott is taking her talents to Texas. The 18-year-old has signed for Texas University for the 202021 academic school year. Amelia will become part of the illustrious sporting fraternity known as the “Longhorns”. “It’s pretty surreal, everything happened so fast from my visit to signing so it is still soaking in at the moment.” Amelia’s tenure will get underway in late August. “I loved the vibes of the city Austin in Texas, it is filled with cool people and there is a lot happening there. It is known as the live music capital of the world and I am excited to experience campus life and the crazy university culture.” She says the biggest challenge to acclimatise will be living away
from friends and family. “However, the coaching staff are a group of awesome strong women and I spent time with the team on campus who were a fabulous group of girls. Hopefully, friends of family can visit me sometime. Anyone is welcome to let me know if they are in the neighbourhood.” Having already represented New Zealand in age grade, Amelia hopes this will be the next step in her progression towards the top. “At the moment, I’m taking everything as it comes. If I got the opportunity in the future to be a Football Fern, that would be awesome, otherwise I’m just looking forward to starting my new footballing journey in America and seeing where being a student athlete can take me.” University of Texas coach Angela Kelly says Amelia is one of those players that is so hungry to play at the highest level. “She will be training full-time
to make the New Zealand U20 World Cup squad and has shown a wonderful ability to play make and dictate tempo at the international level.” The former Nelson College for Girls student spent 2019 as the only female in first division playing for Nelson Suburbs. She has represented the New Zealand Under-17 and Under-20 teams, earning six caps during New Zealand’s run to a bronze medal at the 2018 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay. The midfielder scored one of the goals of the tournament during the 1-1, quarterfinal tie against Japan. Her coach Ryan Stewart says this is a result of Amelia’s hard work over the last four years, “Thanks to the work of Jessica Pullar and her company USA connect for getting Amelia so many great offers, I’m looking forward to seeing her playing for Texas this season.”
Dominik Berghamer The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club is hosting the annual Snapper Cup this weekend. Over a hundred anglers will be competing for over $12.000 worth of prizes. Snapper (and Kingfish) catches over the last couple of weeks have been excellent, if the weather plays along there should be plenty of fish to be seen at the weigh in. Whether you have entered into the competition or are just after some tasty fish for the family, here a few tips and tricks to make the most of your fishing trip: • Get up early: Change of light usually is the best time for a good haul, make sure your boat’s lighting is compliant and works before heading out in the dark. • Get the tides right: Snapper love a good current flowing and feed less during slack tides. • Keep the noise down: Snapper are easily spooked, especially in shallow water, avoid all
knocking, stomping and anchor chain rattling, especially on aluminium boats. • Use burley: the more the better, if fishing in deeper waters deploy your burley bomb a few metres off the bottom. • Try different methods: Flasher rigs and stray lines are the classic ways to go but slow jigs and softbaits are well worth a try too, you could even try a small to medium sized live bait to mix things up a bit. • Try different baits: Squid and pilchards are the usual suspects but you may want to try fresh fish (the oilier the better), crabs, prawns or mussels. • Use light gear: The big old fish are clever and shy. Light lines greatly improve your chances of hooking into a trophy fish. Make sure you are using high quality gear, large Snapper and the omnipresent Kingfish are tremendously powerful. Check your leader after every fish, if in doubt, tie a new one! Tight lines!

World masters to clash in South Africa Jonty Dine
A pair of veteran Nelson cricketers are set to take on the world. David Leonard and Mason Robinson will represent the New Zealand Grey Caps at the second edition of the over-50s World Cup in South Africa starting next week. David will be one of the sides opening bowling and middle order batting options while Mason, also will keep wicket and bat at the top. Mason is currently the second ranked over 50’s player in the world. “When I first arrived in Nelson 20 years ago, I had no idea I’d still be playing senior cricket.” He says the World Cup will see “old buggers playing as competitive as we can”. “We will bring home that trophy.” New Zealand will open its account against the West Indies on March 11 and its final round robin against rivals Australia on March 18. The ageing bodies will be thoroughly tested with teams to play at least seven 45-over games and eight, if they reach the bowl or plate final at on March 23 or the Cup Final at Newlands on March 24. Australia are the defending Over-50 champions, having defeated Pakistan by just three runs in a tense final in Sydney in 2018 Follow the teams progress at https://www. facebook.com/nz050s/

Historic Mako match for Motueka

Jonty Dine
Swimming: Nelson swimmers had a final hit out last Sunday as they prepare for the arrival of the national series. Luke Kelly, last year’s Interislander Big Tahuna winner, already has a first and a second in Banana Boat races this season and he showed he’s ready to race in his home surf next weekend. Along with Oxford Bayley and Hayden Squance, Kelly was in a group setting the early pace, with last year’s overall Banana Boat Series women’s winner Sierra Thomas tucked behind holding fourth place. That’s the way they finished, with 56-year-old age grouper Hamish Neill next, ahead of other top age group swimmers Matt Hansen, Flossie Van Dyke, Angus Perham, Christina Harris and Ben Van Dyke.
After securing its maiden title in 2019 the Tasman Mako will kick off its Mitre 10 Cup defence against Counties Manukau on Saturday August 8 in Pukekohe. The 2020 draw was released today with Tasman hosting five games across the region including an historic first ever match for Motueka. Motueka will celebrate 100-years of rugby in the region when the Mako take on Southland at Sports Park in September. Other home games will see Waikato and Bay of Plenty come to Trafalgar Park while Blenheim will host Northland and rivals Canterbury. Tasman Rugby Union marketing manager Les Edwards says they are delighted at the opportunity to spread the game across the province. He says the Mako will wear brown and white hoops during their match in Motueka paying homage to the local club side. “With lads like David Havili coming from Motueka and Ethan Blackadder and Quinten Strange form Golden Bay, I

Coach Mike Fitchett says Grida’s recent call up for the Australian Boomers shows he has what it takes to compete at a high level.

Hill wins South Island super stocks Jody Scott
Speedway Reporter editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Alex Hill has continued to fill up the trophy cabinet. This time it will be pride of place for the Hi Reach South Island Super Stock Trophy, which was won against a solid field of three former New Zealand Champions. A bit of help from Phil Krammer, holding up former South Island title holder Jordan Dare, in the final heat gave Alex the points gap he needed. Constant rival Brett Nicholls was put infield after coming to grief with Trevor Lineham’s car in the final heat while tied on points with Alex. The championship attracted 18 cars from around the country with Rotorua, Hawke’s Bay, Dunedin, Christchurch and Palmerston North all being represented. Wayne Hemi has won every trophy in the book except the
South Island title, but his attempt ended very early with steering issues in heat one. William Humphries struck trouble in heat two with a flat rear, ruining his chances. Malcolm Ngatai was the other former New Zealand champion competing, but his points tally was only enough to claim third overall. Dare survived a few blocks to finish second overall. Most of the drivers will be returning on Easter Friday for rerun of the Super Stock Stampede plus plenty more to end the season on a high note. Zoe Connolly picked up her first race win on her home track, while Jayden Corkill keeps his feature win tally ticking over. Another solid drive from the ever-improving Raiden Hearne saw him pick up second spot. Brett Steer and Wade Thorn won the club side-car championship after their final round of racing, while the

Nelson Mountain Bike Club will play host to the world’s best riders in April 2021 as the Enduro World Series comes to town. Known for its technical riding that feels like a back-country adventure but starts minutes from the town centre, Nelson has long been a must-ride destination for those in the know, and the club is looking forward to showcasing the best of the region for first time visitors and returning friends. Nelson Mountain Bike Club event coordinator Belinda Crisp says being awarded the first round in 2021 is the culmination of thirty years of work from the original mountain bikers who started building trails in Nelson.
